Prisoner charity to be wound down Seven jobs at a Waterford charity look set to be lost after it was announced that it is to be wound down. The U-Casadh Project, which works with ex-prisoners and disadvantaged communities, was hit by allegations of inappropriate practices during a a Workplace Relations Commission hearing in January. The charity provides support services for criminals and those at risk of re-offending and their families, and currently works with 25 offenders. According to reports in The Irish Examiner, its chairperson wrote to staff to say the board had “come to the decision to make plans to wind down the company”. “This was not an easy decision, and the news will come as a shock to many of you,” chairperson Joannah Cooney wrote in the letter, adding that the decision was taken by the board on February 9. No decision has been made about what will happen to the programmes provided, which are funded by the Department of Justice and the Department

Niamh Owens, from Waterford, winner of the Hibernia College Post-Primary Business award, pictured with her husband Matthew Chau at the annual Hibernia College conferring ceremony which was held at Dublin’s Convention Centre recently

of Social Protection. The Ferrybank-based U-Casadh Project was claimed to have accused one of its workers of selling cocaine to some of the charity’s service users. At the WRC hearing, former Garda Michael McGagh said that he was concerned about “inappropriate practices”. The 57-year-old Mr McGagh claimed he had been asked to sign someone else’s signature, so that person would be able to access expenses, something McGagh declined to do. Mr McGagh further claimed that his solicitor informed the board that he had been accused of selling cocaine to “two vulnerable service users” in the city but that no investigation of the claims were ever made. Mr McGagh eventually took stress leave and sued for an alleged loss of earnings at the WRC, where he said he faced “isolation and harassment” at U-Casadh following his making of a protected disclosure concerning the charity. The hearing was to continue this week but was postponed, according to the WRC.

02 | news in brief Mayfield House on market for €300k Mayfield House, in Portlaw, considered one of the finest mansions in Ireland in its heyday is to go under the auctioneer’s hammer for €300,000. Built in 1740, it has been empty since 1994 and has sadly been suffering deterioration in the decades since. Now the 10 bedroom, one bathroom, along with a gate lodge, on 6.05 acres of land is on the market, with its price dropping a staggering €535,000 from its original asking price of €835,000. The auction firm BidX1 is managing the sale.

Online library to go offline for upgrades

The online library accounts of Waterford residents will be unavailable for a week due to a new system update. The Public Library Service for Waterford City and County Council said the switch will be undertaken between March 21st and 28th. Library users will be unable to reserve items online during this time, however the change will not affect apps such as Borrow Box, Libby and PressReader. It’s expected the update will result in a “new and improved” library system.

Eileen celebrates 101st birthday with family

A VERY special day for a special woman was held recently, as one of Dungarvan Community Hospital’s lady residents celebrated her 101st birthday. Born in 1921, Mrs Eileen O’ Brien (a native of Grallagh, Grange, Ardmore) is a grandmother of 16, has 33 great grandchildren and is cared for in the St Francis Unit. Eileen was joined by her daughters Mary Lynch and Claire Cummins, son Kieran

and his wife Breda (above), to mark the occasion (with Eileen’s late husband John and late son Michael also remembered on the day). A woman of great faith, Eileen was a regular at 10am Mass every morning in Ardmore until quite recently. During long years of community involvement, Eileen’s talent with needle and thread can be seen in the altar cloths at both Ardmore and Grange churches. The Director of Nursing

at Dungarvan Community Hospital, Ms Paula French, said: “We extend our congratulations to Eileen and her proud family. We are delighted to see her reach 101. “It has been a challenging time for residents and their loved ones over the last two years. It has also been challenging for our own staff and their families. So, it’s great to see Eileen and her family celebrate a happy birthday here with us.”

Forecourts accused of fuel hikes

Forecourts in the county have been accused of jacking up fuel prices as oil prices soar due to the war in Ukraine. The cost of a tank of petrol was set to reduce by €12 and diesel by €9 after the Government reduced the excise duty on petrol by 20c per litre and 15c per litre of diesel but it has now admitted prices will continue to soar despite their intervention. Farmers have said that a cut of 2c per litre on green diesel which will stay until the end of August is not enough. Circle K Ireland has “categorically” denied that a recent increase in its prices of diesel and petrol was related to the Government announcing decreases to excise duty on fuel. The price fuel at Circle K Ireland stations was reported to have risen, with multiple people taking to social media to post pictures of increased prices on forecourts, ahead of the Government cuts. Meanwhile, home heating oil prices have almost doubling from around €400 for 500 litres to close to €800 in just a matter of months and are expected to rise further.

Research chair at WIT for Vicky Phelan

THE Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has announced the creation of an honorary research chair named after Honorary Fellow of WIT, Vicky Phelan. The successful applicant will have access to a research grant for the period of the appointment (three years) and will conduct research into how we widen access into education, with a specific focus on women. They will be entitled to use the title ‘The Vicky Phelan Chair in Equality and Access to Education’ for the duration of the bursary. The announcement comes as the WIT community gathered to acknowledge the work and achievements on International Women’s Day of their former colleague and friend, with the Vicky Phelan Portrait in situ. Dr Helen Murphy, Head of the School of Education & Lifelong Learning in WIT, said: “We are here today to create a long lasting link between Vicky, her family and the institute. Vicky has not only provided motivation and inspiration to the community of WIT, but also to the women of Ireland and, indeed, to society at large. “The Vicky Phelan Chair in Equality and Access to Education embeds values

that the WIT community hold dear: strength, courage, determination, resilience, openness, leadership, wisdom, the ability to overcome adversity and a willingness to put aside one’s own personal considerations for the betterment of society,” she added. The Vicky Phelan Chair in Equality and Access to Education will be awarded to a current member of staff in WIT following an internal competitive process. The WIT community gathered on International Women’s Day to acknowledge Vicky’s work and achievements. WIT staff and students in attendance were joined by members of Vicky’s family, along with Vicky’s lifelong friend David Brennan who purchased the portrait at auction. The artist, Vincent Devine spoke on the heartfelt story behind the creation of the painting. The aim of the event on WIT’s main campus was to raise funds for two charities close to Vicky’s heart – the Solas Cancer Support Centre in Waterford and the Shona Project. Anyone who wishes to make a donation to either charity can do so at: www. i d o n a t e . i e / Vi c k i P h e l a n PortraitExpoMar22.

Care centre raises €910 for Ukraine

Residents and staff in the Waterford Residential Care Centre, together with their families, held a fundraising coffee morning recently in aid of the people in war-torn Ukraine. The event was also to demonstrate solidarity with and support for Ukraine from all those on the Waterford Residential Care Centre campus, including St Aidan’s Unit; the Waterford Home Care Team; and the Waterford Integrated Care for Older Persons (WICOP)

unit at St Patrick’s Hospital. A total of €910 was raised towards relief efforts, as part of the Irish Red Cross’s Ukraine Crisis Appeal. Barry Power, Director of Nursing at the Waterford Residential Care Centre, said there was an extraordinary response for the initiative. “I would like to thank everybody for their kindness and generosity. It was great, to be able to have a coffee morning both to register our solidarity but also to make a practical contribution.”

27 years helping women

Waterford’S Women’s Centre recently celebrated 27 years of working with women in Waterford (from 1995– 2022), marking the occasion on International Women’s Day. Some 50 guests attended the event in Waterford Institute of Technology with an International Circle Dance workshop, led by Kate Crotty, Women’s Centre, and a bonnet display commemorating Waterford women who were transported as convicts, marking women’s history week. A Heritage Blue Plaque placed on the Women’s Centre in 2021 during lockdown was also relaunched. Waterford Women’s Centre was started by women for women in 1995 as ACCESS 2000. The organisation has grown from the ground up and developed from a need identified by women’s groups from Waterford and Wexford, who came together to access qualifications for women community activists from the region. The Women’s Centre has always had a strong group of volunteers with passion and equality at the heart of its work.

An inspiring day of laughter and singing

THEATRE Royal hosted over 100 guests to enjoy an inspiring line up of women who “spoke, sang, laughed and cried” and performed on stage to celebrate and mark International Women’s Day recently. The occasion was Break the Bias – Waterford’s Third Global Women’s Conference, which was organised by Europe Direct Waterford, Waterford Integration Services and Waterford Libraries and marked a return to live events after two years. The very special line-up of speakers and performers included Waterford writer Dalal Sayed, who has written her story ‘Escape from War to Live in Peace’ as a Syrian Refugee who now lives with her family in Cappoquin, Co Waterford. Health Advocate and performer Osas Iyamu Usideme spoke and performed a poem, while Director of the Bealtaine Library Choir, Anne Woodworth, also took to the stage and was joined by 10 members of the Bealtaine

Singer-songwriter Minnie, above, who joined over 100 guests at the BreakTheBias event for International Women’s Day at Theatre Royal. Library Choir who sang the European Union anthems, ‘Ode to Joy’ and ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’. O’Higgins, of Sinead Europe Direct Waterford and Waterford Libraries said: “This International Women’s Day we came together for Waterford’s Third Global Women’s

Conference. “It was our first real-live event in two years and it was a very special morning. We connected, we cried, we laughed, we listened and we were inspired. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all our speakers and performers. We are looking forward to next year already,”

Covid ‘having PUP impact on EDs’ reduced Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has said that Covid-19 is still having a big impact on emergency departments. He said that in emergency departments, two care pathways are needed — for Covid and non-Covid patients — and a lot of space is taken up which would otherwise help. Mr Donnelly said that he was very conscious of the level of overcrowding in some emergency departments. He said he had visited the Galway hospital emergency department in the last few days and what was happening there

was not acceptable for patients or staff. He also said that around the country there were patients in acute hospital beds that have been discharged, and efforts were under way to find places for them to go. A record number of people attended hospital emergency departments in the last week, according to the Health Service Executive’s Chief Clinical Officer. Dr Colm Henry said that over 28,000 people attended EDs and while the numbers admitted were lower it is still “troubling”.

Grants for local artists

ARTISTS in Waterford can now apply for financial support from the Association of Local Authority Arts Offices (ALAAO), in collaboration with the Arts Council. Designed to support and offer career development for 31 mid-career artists (one artist in each of the 31 local authorities around Ireland), there are two elements of support for participating

artists in the scheme: financial and developmental. Participating artists will receive an €8,000 bursary to invest in themselves and their practice, combined with participation in a developmental and networking framework. The award is open to artists of any discipline and applications are open until March 30th. For more info: www. platform31.localartsireland.ie

to €208

The Pandemic Unemployment Payment has been reduced to €208 a week in the next step in the winding down of the scheme. People who previously earned less than €151.50 per week will receive a payment of €150. The PUP was first introduced in March 2020 and at one stage it was paid at a flat rate of €350 a week. It was then restructured and linked to previous earnings. The scheme was closed for new applications on January 22 and remaining PUP recipients, if eligible, will start transitioning to standard jobseekers’ payments from April 5. Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys announced the winding down of the scheme in January. At the time she said that the PUP had been a vital support for workers and their families. At the end of February, 53,706 people were in receipt of the payment,” she said. “This week, that number will fall below 50,000, compared to over 605,000 at the peak in May 2020.”

We too are at war and we must learn to live with the pain

I

N 2001, a junior minister, Joe Jacob, talked himself out of his job with advice on how Ireland should handle a nuclear emergency. We should, he said, take iodine tablets and consult a leaflet, neither of which had been issued; we should stop drinking water from the well and should bring in the cattle from the fields. His bizarre suggestions came to mind when I heard Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue (pictured) propose that every farmer should grow a cereal crop to guard against food shortages caused by the war in Ukraine. Like Joe Jacob, with his plan for wells and cattle, Mr McConalogue seemed to be thinking of an Ireland that hasn’t existed for many a year. The idea of getting every farmer to plant some cereal was attempted here by a British gov-

Michael Wolsey

ernment during World War I. It was revived, with limited success, by our own government during World War II. Ireland was a very different place then, with a lot of small mixed farms. Some ploughs were still pulled by horses and some scything done by hand. I cannot see how the scheme could be adapted to modern farming or what practical use could be made of small batches of cereals grown here, there and everywhere. But, however impractical the idea, I am glad that Mr McConalogue and his Cabinet colleagues are at least giving thought to the difficulties the country may face in coming months. Ireland was not under any

threat of nuclear conflict when Joe Jacob revealed his survival plan to a bewildered radio audience. The Wicklow TD’s concern was for a possible leak from a power plant on the west coast of England. Today we have a Russian president hinting darkly at the possibility of nuclear war, while inflicting a brutal invasion on the brave people of Ukraine. They are holding the line for democracy and fighting for our freedoms as well as their own. But, have no doubt about it, Ireland and the rest of the free world has also gone to war, a very modern sort of economic war. We are not suffering like the Ukranians are suffering and we

must pray that we do not face the terrors of nuclear combat. But we have embarked on a contest of wills, pitting Western economic strength against Russian military might. It’s war and wars will always be painful. The Government can ease some of the pain but there are limits to what it can do. We will have to accept higher prices for fuel and food and we will have to forgo some luxuries we have got used to. These problems will not disappear soon and the Government cannot shield us indefinitely by such measures as reducing tax on petrol or subsidising electricity. If there is money to spare, it would be better directed towards poorer families, by improving social welfare payments and reducing the cost of home heating, education and basic health services. But is there money to spare? We came through a very

costly Covid crisis because the economy was in good shape to begin with and because the EU was prepared to underwrite our borrowing. We are now borrowed to the hilt and the economic position is far from rosy. In the past two years we have come to believe that the Government has a financial solution to every problem. Can’t work? They’ll pay you to stay at home. Your house was built with faulty material? The taxpayers will buy you a new one. And if your home needs insulation, the taxpayers will cover that cost too. To use a favourite phrase of the moment, it is not sustainable. Not now when we are at war. As George Orwell observed, “The quickest way of ending a war is to lose it”. If we are going to win this one, then at least some of us - most of us - must bear some pain.

March is the month that sees the start of our feathered summer migrants arriving back in Ireland. The four species listed below are typically the first ones to return. Keep your eyes peeled in the coming days and weeks for the arrival of these annual visitors. it’s marty by Marty Morrissey

With their distinctive white rump and inverted black ‘T’ tail markings, the name wheatear is appropriately old English/ Norse meaning ‘white arse’. They are typically the first of our summer migrants to arrive, or pass through in numbers.

ONE of the nation’s favourite sports broadcasters, Marty Morrissey, recently held an event to promote his autobiography ‘It’s Marty’ to raise money for the relief effort to support Ukrainians who have had to flee their homes. Marty pledged the proceeds of sales at the event to the Irish Emergency Alliance. The book has been on sale since October 2021, but due to Covid-19 restrictions the official launch had to be postponed several times. Chiffchaff (Photo by Ken Billington at Wikicommons) Chiffchaff is typically the first of our warbler species to return in spring, arriving from their wintering grounds in the Mediterranean basin. Very similar in looks to the much more numerous willow warbler, the chiffchaff can be easily told apart when it sings its distinctive two-note song ‘chiff-chaff chiff-chaff chiffchaff’. Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis) Sandwich Tern (Photo by MPF at Wikicommons)

We get 5 tern species visiting our shores to breed each summer. The largest and earliest to arrive is the sandwich tern. About the size of a black-headed gull, it has a large black bill with a yellowtip and a black crown with a shaggy crest.

Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives Netflix

VEGANS look away now . . . carnivores, stop the sniggering please. From Chris Smith, the executive producer of ‘Tiger King’ and director of ‘Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened’, comes ‘Bad Vegan’, a wild four-part documentary series that explores how Sarma Melngailis, the celebrity restaurateur behind the glittering New York hotspot Pure Food and Wine, went from being the queen of vegan cuisine to being known as the ‘Vegan Fugitive’. Her businesses closed in 2015 after staff walked out over unpaid wages. Melngailis was arrested for fraud in 2016 and convicted in 2017.

OKAY, so this looks like a real flash in the pan, lash it out of the tin dish for a mid-week dish. But what’s wrong with that? And it’s healthy and cheap to boot. It’s a case of heating some oil in a frying pan, add the chickpeas, garlic, ginger, paprika, cumin and turmeric, and cook for 3–4 minutes before adding some stock, spinach and bread if you want to bulk it up. While you can serve up after about 30 minutes, leaving overnight will allow more time for the flavours to infuse.

ALMOST exactly one year after the Black Keys released their last album Delta Kream, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney will release a new one. Dropout Boogie is out May 13 via Nonesuch (yes, we are announcing it early for pre-order!). The album features collaborations with ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons, Reigning Sound and Oblivians’ Greg Cartwright, and Angelo Petraglia. Check out the Bryan Schlam– directed video for “Wild Child,” which features Cartwright and Petraglia. The new album’s release falls near the 20th anniversary of the band’s first album The Big Come Up.

Daffodil day www.cancer.ie

wine books by Patricia McCarthy / Raymond Blake

the osmonds: a new musical bordgaisenergytheatre.ie, 22nd-26th March

PICTURED at the launch of the Irish Cancer Society’s partnership with Centra Ireland for Daffodil Day 2022, is Musgrave Marketing Manager Niamh Skally and Irish Cancer Society CEO Averil Power, with Centra employees Tony Thomas (left) and Yash Pilankar (right). You can drop into Centra stores nationwide up to March 27th to add a €1 Daffodil Day donation to your receipt at the till. Donations will help fund vital cancer support services and ground-breaking cancer research.

WINE lovers will be pleased to hear that two new books are on the way which will help you impress on an evening out. The first is Enjoying Claret in Georgian Ireland by Patricia McCarthy (Four Courts Press) and the other is Wine Talk — an Enthusiast’s Take on the People, the Places, the Grapes and the Styles, by Raymond Blake (Sky Horse). Raymond’s brilliant book on the Côte Dôr and his charming Breakfast in Burgundy are essential to any wine library. Please see publishers’ website for dates of publication.

WHILE this may at first appeal to those of a very certain vintage, it really is something to take the family for the joy of the music if nothing else. Directed by Shaun Kerrison and choreographed by Olivier Award winning Bill Deamer, this brand new musical features a chart topping list of anthems including Love Me For A Reason, Crazy Horses, Let Me In, Puppy Love, One Bad Apple, Long Haired Lover From Liverpool, Paper Roses and many more, The Osmonds: A New Musical will take you back to the relive 60s, 70s… 80s….

AquariusThe stakes could seem high. Shift directions with shared finances over the next few weeks. Work out the next phase together. PiscesReach a turning point with a partnership. Compromise and collaborate for shared commitments. Adjust to a change in plans.
