Mum told to repay €208 after son’s death A grieving mother from Waterford has hit out at the Department of Social Protection after receiving a letter demanding the repayment of €208 in disability allowance, which was collected the day after her severely disabled son passed away. Having cared for her beloved son, Brendan Bjorn, for 17 years Tracy McGinnis, was devastated when he finally passed on May 17. On May 18, his disability payment was collected at the local post office, with Tracy believing that she was entitled to six week’s grace. However, she then received a letter from the Department of Social Protection and Family Affairs asking that she repay a week’s allowance which they say had been wrongly paid, as her son had passed away. “Yes, I collected the mere €208 the week my first-born son died, thinking payments went on for six weeks,” she said. “This demand letter disgusts me.” “I just got a phone call from the ‘Assistant Principal of the

Hanora O’Connor supporting Hospice Sunflower Day in City Square Shopping Centre. Pic: Noel Browne Disability Allowance section’ in Longford,” she said. “She apologised for the tone of the letter, but stated that it

stands as policy, so yes; the €208 is still owed to them,” she added. A spokesperson for the Department of Social

Protection said that while they could not comment on individual cases, someone from the department has contacted the person concerned by phone and apologised for any upset or distress caused”. They stated that the position of the department in relation to somebody in receipt of disability allowance who passes away is that “Carer’s Allowance will continue to be paid for 12 weeks after a death”. Tracy added: “It’s maddening to think that politicians can get away not only with earning so much not just in salary, but travel expenses etc. “I bet not one of them could have, or would have, done the 24/7 nursing level work I did with my son for so many years, for no pay, no pension etc. “The past 17½ years were spent fighting for proper services — timely medical care and interventions, equipment, operations and even respite for myself,” she added. “He is the reason I became an advocate.” Continued on next page

Hotel appeal A West Waterford businessman is to make a fresh attempt to secure planning permission for a new hotel on the quayside in Dungarvan. Stud farm owner Michael Ryan is to appeal a recent decision by Waterford City and County Council to reject his plans for a 40-bedroom boutique hotel on Davitt’s Quay, Dungarvan. The council rejected the plans, claiming the building would be “excessively domineering. A ruling by An Bord Pleanala is due in early October.

Mum told to give back disability pay Continued from previous page Meanwhile, Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys said the demand was “tone-deaf” and announced the debt will be struck out. “This shouldn’t have happened and how anybody thought it was appropriate to send a letter to a grieving mother is beyond me and I have spoken to my officials about it,” Ms Humphreys told Newstalk radio after the story broke recently. “They’re going to look at how they handle cases like this in the future but for somebody to receive a letter like that a few weeks after their son died is tone-deaf. “We have to do better and we have to ensure it doesn’t happen again.” Ms Humphreys extended her deepest condolences to Ms McGinnis on the death of her son and apologised for the letter. Brendan was born with Congenital CMV, leaving him profoundly disabled. His illnesses included severe spastic quadriplegia, intractable epilepsy, scoliosis with a spinal fusion, osteoporosis and hip dysplasia. His mother provided round-the-clock care.

Brothers jailed as 56 dogs rescued from home

Two brothers have been given prison sentences and banned from owning dogs for life after 56 severely neglected dogs were found on their property. Judge Brian O’Shea handed down four-month sentences to Patrick and Michael O’Brien, of Monaman, Lismore, Co Waterford, in Dungarvan District Court. They had pleaded guilty to offences under the Animal Health and Welfare Act (AHWA) 2013. They were ordered to pay costs of €1,330 and €1,979 in vet fees. At a hearing on May 13, the court heard how ISPCA animal welfare inspector Alice Lacey followed up on a report from a dog warden, who was concerned about an estimated 20 dogs. A thorough inspection of the property and associated outhouses, sheds and neighbouring fields belonging to the two men uncovered 56 dogs in varying stages of neglect. Ms Lacey said the dogs had been allowed to continuously breed and multiply on the property. She said they were living in horrendous conditions with a lack of natural light and little ventilation where most of the

dogs were being housed, as well as a build-up of faeces and an overpowering stench of ammonia. Most of the dogs did not have access to water. Ms Lacey said the dogs were suffering from a range of health issues including untreated skin conditions, malnourishment, bite wounds and matted coats, which were caked in faeces and urine. A number of the dogs were also blind, which it was believed was as a result of inbreeding. Ms Lacey said there were so many unwanted dogs being born on the property that they were destined for a life of little human interaction, socialisation and care. The result was that most of the dogs were almost feral and terrified of human contact. She said it was one of the worst cases of neglect and cruelty she had encountered. On passing sentence, Judge O’Shea commended the work of the ISPCA and Ms Lacey. He added the case was ‘at the upper end of the range of gravity’ and ‘undoubtedly the worst case of animal abuse’ he had seen. Neil Twomey, solicitor for the O’Brien brothers, told the court they were elderly reclusive men living in appalling conditions.

New social homes in heart of Kilmacthomas

A NEW housing development consisting of 16 new social housing units has just been launched in Kilmacthomas. Known as Port na Machan, the homes have been praised for their high standard of finish and are A2-energy rated for greater energy efficiency and cost savings. The development was officially opened by Cllr. John O’Leary, Cathaoirleach of the Comeragh District. Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People Mary Butler was also in attendance as the ribbon was cut. Funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, John Somers Construction was the main contractor on the development with the design team led by CJ Falconer & Associates. The development consists of a mix of homes with six one-beds, eight two-beds and two threebeds. All of the ground floor units have a south-facing garden, while the first-floor apartments are fitted with balconies,

overlooking the River Mahon and river walkway. Addressing the attendees Cllr O’ Leary commented: “The importance of having a home of your own cannot be understated. “A home provides security, control, belonging, identity, and privacy, among other things. It gives us a place to set off from

in the morning, and a place to come home to.” Ivan Grimes, Director of Services for Housing, Waterford City and County Council, said, “We are extremely pleased with the standard of finish at Port na Machan. All of the homes are A2-energy rated for greater energy efficiency and

cost savings. Not only are the homes appointed to the highest standards, they are set against one of the most picturesque backdrops in the heart of Kilmacthomas, close to schools and amenities, a stone’s throw from the Waterford Greenway and close to Dungarvan and Waterford city.”

Eilish’s Royal welcome

Waterford actress Eilish McLaughlin is back home at the Theatre Royal this month, when she treads the boards with the Druid Theatre Company, playing ‘Nuala’ in Billy Roche’s classic play The Cavalcaders. Originally from the Dunmore Road, Éilish is a former pupil of St Angela’s Ursuline Secondary School in the city. She’s been involved in theatre since the tender age of 9, when she first started attending stage school locally, and previously performed at the Theatre Royal while a teenager, in South Eastern Theatre Group’s Phantom of the Opera. Éilish went on to attend The Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art in Dublin, from where she graduated in 2019. The Cavalcaders is a comic and tender portrait of life in smalltown, pre-Celtic Tiger Ireland and the men who lived there, described as resolutely feelgood drama by the Irish Times. A catering student and amateur jockey, who broke a neighbour’s nose after being overlooked for a point-to-point race, has made a €5,000 donation to a local hospital. The payment was confirmed at Dungarvan District Court after it was indicated the court would apply the Probation Act rather than impose a criminal conviction. Jerome Power (21), of Powersfield House, Ballinamuck, Dungarvan, had pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault causing harm to 51 yearold farrier Raymond Beresford,

on April 17, 2021. The men’s families had been friends for more than 30 years and the rift began on April 5, 2021 when Mr Beresford appointed a more experienced jockey to ride one of his horses in the race. Mr Power later phoned Mr Beresford to register his disappointment and 12 days later they met at Mr Beresford’s yard. An altercation occurred, during which Mr Beresford was punched repeatedly. The judge said he would look leniently on the matter if Mr Power paid the €5,000 and gave him two weeks to pay.

Firms want to trash cash

IRISH businesses are divided on going fully cashless within a decade, but more than half of Waterford firms believe it is becoming a real possibility, new research shows. The increase in cashless payments over cash transactions — particularly since the pandemic — is viewed positively by almost two-thirds of businesses nationally, according to a Bank of Ireland Payment

Acceptance (BOIPA) survey. This has left Irish businesses finely split over whether they expect to become fully cashless in the next 10 years, with 47% believing this is now a distinct possibility. The counties most confident of this transition however are Dublin, Waterford, Kildare, Tipperary and Carlow. Donegal businesses were the least optimistic with only 36% approval.

pay rise

‘INFURIATED’ workers at Bausch and Lomb’s plant in Waterford have set up pickets for the first time in the company’s 42-year history, following the failure of negotiations to avert industrial action. Members have demanded that management give them a sufficient pay rise, while workers were also said to be “infuriated” and “disgusted” at the company’s decision to withhold access to a GP scheme provided by Bausch and Lomb for the duration of the industrial action. “It’s infuriating people. People get sick, they need access to their doctor,” Siptu organiser Allen Dillon said. “The company is now saying that while this industrial action is going on, if they need to visit their doctor, that they’re not able to access that doctor.” Bausch and Lomb has argued that it offers the most competitive salaries but Siptu members say this only applies to the ‘headline wage’ and doesn’t factor in benefits and sick leave.

Why there ain’t no cure for the summertime blues

I

f I were the compiler of playlists for an Irish radio station, I would ban Summer in the City, or at least confine the song to winter months, when it would give the listeners something to fantasize

about. As it is, they start playing it every June as we head into the normal, soggy Irish summer. When I first heard it this year, it was a blustery wet day and I was thinking of turning on the heat. Well, if you don’t like the weather in Ireland, just wait a minute. Later that day it was sunny and bright. Next day it was raining again. But even on the best of days you would never think ... Hot town, summer in the city Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty

Michael Wolsey

Unless. of course, there is a water shortage and you can’t take a shower. Which can easily happen, because, although we live in the rainiest country on earth, hardly a summer goes by without some warning about water conservation, low pressure in the taps and the threat of a hosepipe ban. Oscar Wilde spoke of the “triumph of hope over experience”. Maybe he had the Irish summer in mind, for that phrase perfectly sums up our response to a brief glimpse of sun. Suddenly there are men in shorts and women in frocks and we are stocking up for the barbecue, although we know damn well it will probably be raining before we get the thing lit. But never mind, we’ve got to ... Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer Those days of soda and pretzels and beer

In Ireland, soda is bread they eat in the north and pretzels are dry, salty things publicans hand out to make their customers thirsty. They are not part of our summer, but neither is anything else in a song that advises us to “fill your basket full of sandwiches and weenies”. Weenies? What in god’s name are weenies? Have you factored them into your summer plans, or do you just sing about them? When it comes to summer songs we live in a world of imagination, in which people do things we never do, in the sort of weather we never have. Oh, when the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof And your shoes get so hot you wish your tired feet were fireproof Under the boardwalk, down

by the sea, yeah On a blanket with my baby is where I’ll be

The only boardwalk I really know is the one along the Liffey and if you end up under that, you’ve probably been mugged. Ray and Dave Davies, being Londoners, took a more cynical view of the joys of summer. In their song for The Kinks they imagined both wealth and sunshine, but they knew it wouldn’t go well ... My girlfriend’s run off with my car And gone back to her ma and pa Tellin’ tales of drunkenness and cruelty Now I’m sittin’ here Sippin’ at my ice cold beer Lazin’ on a sunny afternoon In summertime There is one summer song. I

will never tire of hearing when it is sung well. Summertime was written in 1934, one of the first compositions George Gershwin worked on for his opera Porgy and Bess. It was originally sung in operatic style but has become a jazz classic. Everybody has their own favourite version, with many voting for the great duet with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. But for me, it’s a tie for first place between the haunting voice of Billie Holiday and the rich, resonating tones of Nina Simone, accompanying herself quite brilliantly on the piano. Summertime when the livin’ is easy Fish are jumpin and the cotton is high It’s the sound of summer - but not as we know it. Dream on.

The wild rose-brier is sweet in spring, Its summer blossoms scent the air; Yet wait till winter comes again, And who will call the wild-brier fair! Then, scorn the silly rosewreath now, And deck thee with the holly’s sheen, That, when December blights they brow, He still may leave thy garland green. - Love always your daughter Joanne & Son in law Damian Mam & Dad Along the road to yesterday, That leads us straight to you, Are memories of the happy days, Together we once knew, And always every evening, We seem to have a way, Of wondering back to meet you, On the road to yesterday. - Love always your daughter Noeleen & Son in law Eamon Mam & Dad

- Never forget you, Love always, Dad Memories are like leaves of gold, They never tarnish or grow old. No more tomorrows for us to share Patrick, But yesterdays memories will always be there. Time slips by, life goes on, But from our hearts you are never gone.

The lonely way you had to die, Its always on our minds, We wondered if you called our names, We wondered if you cried, No one you loved was by your side, To hear your last sigh, or even say good-bye, So when we are at your graveside Patrick, The pain is hard to bear, To know we have to turn away, And leave you sleeping there, You may be in a graveyard Patrick, But you will never be alone, Because part of us went with you, The day God called you home, They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will ever change the way we feel. So god forgive us if we weep, For a beautiful son we loved and wanted to keep.

No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there. -Always loved and missed by your daughter Sharon

Softly the leaves of memories fall, Gently we stoop and gather them all, Unseen, unheard, yet always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear, Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses you more than us, Quietly today your memory we treasure, Loving you always, forgetting you never. - Too dearly loved to be forgotten, from your sons and daughters, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and all your family and friends. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. O.W.

book of the week Heavenly Hummingbirds

Hummingbird Hawk-moth – a blur of wings! (Photo Justin Ivory) As we head into June and the weather is finally heating up, it’s time to keep an eye out for Hummingbirds. Hummingbirds in Ireland! You’ve got to be kidding! Well yes and no is the answer. These particular aeronautical masters are not birds at all but one of the coolest, most amazing insects you are likely to encounter in Ireland. They are in fact Hummingbird Hawk-moths (Macroglossum stellatarum). This day flying moth resembles a hummingbird as it hovers with an audible hum in front of flowers feeding on the nectar with its long tongue or more correctly proboscis. It is particularly fond of Red Valerian, Buddleia, Honeysuckle, thistles and many other plant species. They have greyish forewings and orange hindwings, the lower half of the body has a distinctive black and white striped pattern. The wings flutter so quickly that it appears to look orange. This fascinating moth likes to fly during the day, particularly in bright sunshine, but will also be seen flying at dawn and dusk, and sometimes even in the rain. Studies have shown that they often return to feed at the same patch of flowers at around the same time each day, a behaviour known as trap-line. As well as behavioural clues, it is also instantly recognisable from its orange hind wings, and black and white chequered pattern on the abdomen. The Hummingbird Hawkmoth is an irregular annual migrant to Britain and Ireland from southern Europe in varying numbers. They can be found in gardens, dry rocky grassland at coastal locations and a variety of other habitats. The food plant for their caterpillars tends to be the various species of bedstraw. The female moths lay their eggs on the buds or flowers of these plant species.

HOROSCOPES

film of the week

united nation by Frank Connolly

navalny RTE1, 10.15pm, Thurday June 16

top gun: maverick Cinemas nationwide

ONE hundred years after the Anglo-Irish Treaty and partition, after 30 years of Troubles, the Good Friday Agreement and Brexit, the debate on Irish unity has intensified. But what would a united Ireland look like, and what would it mean for those both north and south of the border? In this insightful new book, journalist Frank Connolly (author of Namaland and Tom Gilmartin: The man who brought down a Taoiseach) interviews people from all sides, and presents his conclusions as to how and whether a united Ireland could create a viable new country. United Nation is a timely look at the possibility of an integrated and united Ireland.

Alexei Navalny, Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist, has infuriated the Kremlin so much over his career that Putin refuses to say his name. Navalny has paid a high price for his work, facing dubious criminal charges for which he received equally dubious convictions before being hospitalised in 2020 after exposure to a Novichok nerve agent. At present, he is languishing in a Russian prison, recognised by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience. This extraordinary documentary is essential viewing for our times.

CAPTAIN Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is back to save our ailing cinema industry this summer so it’s bottles of Bud and High Fives at the ready. Mitchell is recalled to the Fighter Weapons School in San Diego to train a collection of former graduates — including Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his deceased co-pilot — for a daring mission with a low chance of success. While training a new generation of pilots, Mitchell reconnects with an old flame (Jennifer Connelly) and an old friend (Val Kilmer) and kind of annoys everyone, while endearing them at the same time. snowflake mountain Netflix EVERY parent stuck with a teenager for the summer will be watching this and wishing it wasn’t just a reality TV programme but a reality in itself for summer camps in Ireland. This new show takes a bunch of clueless “kidults” and puts them through their paces at a wilderness survival retreat. The camp is a rude awakening to just how pampered their Snowflake lives have been. At stake is a cash prize for the lucky winner, however . . . the catch is there’s no running water, no parents to wait on them, and, worst of all, no Wi-Fi. But, by connecting with nature, they’ll learn to graduate as fully functioning adults. Maybe.

The Storm Before the Calm Alanis Morissette

SO you might be looking out the window thinking really? A BBQ in Ireland! In summer! Wit no sun? But just give it time, it will happen. In the meantime, you can study this for when the clouds break. In this sumptuous recipe, the meat falls off the bone, and the marinade has a lovely balance of sweet, salty and spicy flavours. While you’re at it, check out the Griddled vegetables with melting aubergines to pack all five of your 5-a-day into one healthy vegan dish. Flavoured with garlic, lemon and herbs.

Warning: fans of Ms Morissette should know that this is not your average Alanis Morissette album. In fact, this is not your average album, full stop. From the pen of the artist who recently said therapy saved her life, comes an album of ‘guided meditations’. And given we are all muddling through the Age of Anxiety, maybe this is no bad thing. In advance of the album later this month, Morissette has dropped the track ‘Safety—Empath in Paradise’ — an 11-minute new age epic featuring hypnotic drums and soothing drone sounds. So you can always check it out. It ain’t no Jagged Little Pill, that’s for sure.

father’s day at lidl June 19th (check stock in advance)

Songs I Wish I’d Sung: Jamie beamish Theatre Royal, Friday June 17

WITH Father’s Day fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking of the perfect gift for your dad! And no better place to start looking than the middle aisle of Lidl, where you might even pick up a petrol-powered chainsaw! No, seriously, you can pick up a petrol-powered chainsaw for €109.99 ahead of the big day. Or how about a fire pit for €24.99? If you’re a bit skint and your dad is one of those ‘I hate Father’s Day types ‘ you can grab a T-shirt with NASA on it for just €8.99 and he might change his tune next year and ask for a chainsaw.

Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Jamie Beamish returns to the Theatre Royal where he first started 30 years ago to sing songs from musicals he auditioned for (but didn’t get) and shows he wished he’d auditioned for in the first place. He’ll also tell stories from a career that has led him from The Mall to the West End with just himself and a piano player. Songs I wish I’d Sung is presented as part of Jamie’s artistic residency at the Theatre Royal. All profits from the evening will go to The Solas Cancer Support Centre Waterford.

Château Billeron Bouquey SaintÉmilion Grand Cru 2018 idl — €14.99 www.aldi.ie CLARET, in case you want to show off at the BBQ, is from the word ‘clairet’, the name for a lighter style of Bordeaux. The colour is somewhere between a Rosé and a light red with a deep pink colour and is a perfect summer wine. Our choice is from Aldi. It’s hard to find a good claret at this pricepoint. But this one gives quite a lot with a burst of fruit, backed up by the typical spices of the Bordeaux-style wood, so it is worth going over the tenner for it.

AquariusConsider professional assignments and opportunities. A challenge or competition requires dedication. PiscesGet adventurous. Get out and explore a curious subject. Can you mix business with pleasure? Enjoy classes, conferences and workshops.

Citywide community notes Waterford Pride Official Launch We are super excited to be officially launching Waterford Pride 2022 at the Theatre Royal Vestibule on Friday June 17th at 17.30pm. There will be music, debate, discussions and poetry but most importantly a full announcement on our 2022 Waterford Pride line up! Come on down and see what we’ve got in store for you this August. A weekend full of fun, family and community spirit! Waterford Pride August 19th 21st 2022 Brass & Co Live @ The Churchyard Sessions Saturday, June 18th @ 7pm: Brass & Co. has an exciting line-up of vocalists, keyboards, guitar, bass, drums and a full brass section, featuring trumpet, trombone and alto/ tenor saxophone. Several band members play more than one instrument so Irish whistle, keytar, flugelhorn, mandolin, clarinet, additional guitars and auxiliary percussion are frequently incorporated also depending on the style of the song we are performing. Our 5 vocalists enable us to cover all styles of music. Our hot brass and driving rhythm sections promise to keep your guests on their feet all night long, from the first dance to the last encore. They will find our energy and enthusiasm contagious!

Brass & Co has developed a very special live sound which has made it one of the most highly sought-after and respected bands for weddings and many of Ireland’s most prestigious functions and events. Jamie Beamish - Songs I wish I’d sung A cabaret evening of Songs and Stories from Ballybricken to Bridgerton. Bridgerton & Derry Girls star Jamie Beamish returns to the Theatre Royal stage where he first started 30 years ago to sing songs from musicals he auditioned for (but didn’t get) and shows he wished he’d auditioned for in the first place. As well as singing his heart out, Jamie will also tell stories from a career that has led him from The Mall to the West End to the big and small screen. Just himself, a piano player, showbiz tales and some great show tunes. Songs I wish I’d Sung is presented as part of Jamie’s artistic residency at the Theatre Royal. All profits from the evening will go to The Solas Cancer Support Centre Waterford. Please Note:The Stage Door Bar will remain open until 8pm; theatre customers have the option to bring Stage Door Bar purchased beverages into the auditorium with them and enjoy from the comfort of their seat while taking in the performance.
