All smiles as it’s back to business WATERFORD was smiling as it shook off many of the Covid restriction and re-opened on the bank holiday weekend. Outdoor dining and drinking returned along with a lot of entertainment across the city and county. And there was a welcome boost for the hospitality industry with an increase in bookings for hotels and guesthouses. They are recording reservation levels of 50% for June, 57% for July and 45% for August. A survey from the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) shows that bookings for Waterford county and the South East are running about 20% higher than the national average which has shown an increase of around 10% in the past month. Aidan Quirke, Waterford representative of the IHF, said the figures were “a welcome morale boost”. “The domestic market was a real positive last year and we expect home holidays to be very important for the sector again this year,” he said. He encouraged people to enjoy the “vibrancy of Waterford city, an award-winning food destination with an array of fantastic restaurants, cafés and food producers.” The Cultural Quarter around O’Connell Street is to be pedestrianised every weekend during the summer months and the local businesses have come together to create an animated space under the theme #Lets Meet in O’Connell Street . Ed Cahill owner of Tully’s Bar in the heart of the Cultural Quarter said the developments were heartening.”I wouldn’t want to be doing business anywhre else,” he said. Plans are also underway for the development of a local crafts market on O’Connell Street as a first step in a larger vacant spaces project. Beyond the Cultural Quarter, >>Turn to Page 4

TWO councillors have joined forces to campaign for a new park. It would be Waterford city’s first new community park for decades, say Councillor Eamon Quinlan (FF) and Councillor Joe Kelly (Ind). The park would be in the Gracedieu area at the junction of the Knockhouse road and the Carrickpherish road, on land owned by Waterford City and County Council. A lot of new housing is

planned for the area and they feel a park will be needed. Cllr Quinlan said poor planning decisions had damaged the area in the past and there was a lack of free community facilitates . “There is not a single park on the Dunmore road,” said Cllr Quinlan, pictured at the site with Cllr Kelly. “We must ensure, as we expand the Gracedieu area, that we step up and add in these features to make it a more desirable

location to live in.” Cllr Kelly said this was “a real opportunity for us to answer the demands of residents in the Carrickpherish area for recreational space”. The councillors want rezoning of the land to be included in Waterford’s Draft Development Plan and are calling on local residents to make submissions. Waterford Council has pedestrianised several other city streets, reallocated street space and increased space available for hospitality. Financial supports are available for businesses to enhance their outdoor spaces through the Outdoor Dining Enhancement Scheme. And the Economic Recovery Plan launched by Government last week sets out a range of supports and investment for the tourism industry in Waterford, including the extension of the 9% tourism VAT rate. Senator John Cummins urged eligible businesses to use the scheme. “I know that some businesses haven’t had the opportunity to take full advantage of the reduced tourism VAT rate to date, so I’m delighted to see the extension until September 2022,” he said. “This will give businesses across Waterford the opportunity to claw back some of their muchneeded lost revenue. “

New owner promises investment for Blues FOUR weeks after getting a new manager Waterford FC has a new owner. Richard Forrest took over from Lee Power and named business consultant Mitchell Cowling as the club’s new chairman. He described Waterford FC as “a sleeping giant” and promised investment to get the Blues moving after a poor start to the season. He said: “My main focus is to immediately invest in the first team and make sure the club keeps premier league status. As a collective, we have identified some great talent and hopefully, in July we will have some exciting news to share with you.” Mr Forrest, who owns a chain of childcare facilities in England, had taken a 33% share of the club earlier in the year and has now bought it entirely from Lee Power. Mr Power took over the Blues in 2016 when they were struggling in the First Division. Under his leadership, they were promoted to the Premier Division. They finished in the Europa League places in 2019 but they were denied a place in the competition on a technicality. The club had changed its name from Waterford United to Waterford FC and fell foul

of a Uefa rule that says a new name muast be registered for three years a before a club can compete. The rule is designed to stop clubs escaping contractural responsibilities by changing their name. This was not an issue at Waterford and Mr Power had been assured there would be no problem for the Blues. In his parting statement, Mr Power said the decision had “left a bitter taste in my mouth and it was difficult for things to stay the same”. He also said: “I would like to think that I have left the club in a much better place than when I purchased it.” Mr Power has sold his shares to R & S Holding Ltd, a UKbased company headed by Richard Forrest. In his statement, Mr Forrest said he was looking forward to working with manager Marc Bircham. “Waterford FC is a sleeping giant that has instantly won my heart,” he said. “ I can’t wait to work closely with Marc and his staff, the fans, and local businesses to drive this club forward and create an amazing journey for the club and the local community. “Marc has really impressed me since he joined Waterford FC and there is a real togetherness and great buzz around the club.”

Village stunned by dog attack tragedy A VILLAGE has been stunned by the death of a baby girl who was attacked by a dog in her home in west Waterford. Mia O’Connell, who was born in February, was in her bedroom at the house in Clashmore. Her parents, Ella and Rhys, had moved to the area recently. RTE reported that she had suffered serious head injuries during the attack. Emergency services attended the scene and treated the baby girl before bringing her by ambulance to Cork University Hospital. Efforts to save her life were not successful. Fr Milo Guiry of Ardmore, whose parish includes the vil-

lage of Clashmore, said that it was a “terrible tragedy.” He told RTE: “We will keep the family in our prayers. Every support will be offered to them. It is terrible, terrible news.” The Mayor of Waterford Councillor Damien Geoghegan said it was very sad news . Cllr Geoghegan, whose electoral area includes the village of Clashmore, said everybody’s thoughts and prayers are with the girl’s family and the wider community, who can be assured of support in the coming weeks and months. He said the loss would be felt throughout west Waterford, east Cork and beyond

Survey backs ‘no vaccine no job’ rule A MAJORITY of workers in Waterford say employers should be able to insist that their staff are vaccinated against Covid 19. A survey has found that 58% of Waterford people are in favour of employers being required to check vaccine certification before admitting staff to their place of work. The annual FRS Recruitment Employment Insights Survey also found that more than seven out of every ten people (71%) in Waterford would take a job that required them to be vaccinated. As the country emerges from lockdown, 64% of Waterford workers admitted to being fearful for their job security, higher than the national average (58%). FRS Recruitment says 64%

of Waterford employees are now remote working some or all of the time. Nationally, 85% of employees want to be able to work remotely and 83% of all employers plan on offering more remote working . More than eight out of ten Waterford employees (86%) expect to receive a pay rise in the next 12 months. “What comes across in the survey this year is that optimism is returning to the jobs market in Waterford and all around the country,” said Colin Donnery, General Manager of FRS Recruitment.

DAY CENTRES: The Minister of State with responsibility for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler, has announced plans for the phased reopening of day centres for

older people. The Waterford TD said most of the centres have re-opened this week and they would almost all be open by the end of August. “While services may have to operate at a reduced capacity, initially, this is a huge step forward,” she said. MEDICAL CARDS: Sinn Féin spokesperson on Health, David Cullinan, has said medical cards that expire while the HSE is trying to recover from the cyberattack on its IT system should be regarded as valid. “The medical card renewal process is stalled because of the attack, and many medical cards are now expiring,” he said. “Medical cards should not be cut off for people whose cards expire during the fallout from the cyberattack.”

Summer is taking shape

AN artwork created on a beach in Co Waterford has become the symbol for the reopening of Irish tourism after the Covid pandemic. Fáilte Ireland is using an aerial photography of the sand work at Kilmurrin Cove to front its ‘Keep Discovering’ campaign, aimed at encouraging domestic holidays. It was created by by environmental artist Seán Corcoran over six hours and shows a map of Ireland with symbolic iconography .

The huge work is wider than the height of Dublin’s Liberty Hall. “I had my own little selfdiscovery creating this very integrated piece, discovering different locations as I drew them,” explained Seán. “We started by going up the east coast and going across to the Wild Atlantic Way, creating the outline of the country and then crafting the iconic images one associates with Ireland. “While it was nice to visit

Picnic code says ‘pick it up and ditch the plastic’

WATERFORD wants to be Ireland’s cleanest county this summer. The council is asking for the public’s help to keep the county’s beaches, parks and beauty spots tidy. Try to take fewer singleuse items with you on family picnics and dispose of your rubbish properly or take it back home with you. “Simply using reusable cups and bottles is a great way to minimise the amount of waste generated,” said the council’s

Environmental Awareness Officer Ella Ryan. She pointed out that there are free tap water points in businesses, public buildings and outdoor locations. “This saves us all from bringing large bottles of single use bottled water with us on our day trips, allowing us to fill up as we go,” she said. Ms Ryan is pictured with Mayor Damien Geoghegan who also urged people to av oid single-use plasdtcs and bring their litter home.

The lifeguard service at Bonmahon will start on Monday 28 June.

€40m boost as vote puts uni back on course

THE Technological University of South East Ireland is back on course after teaching staff at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) backed the proposal. In April, the staff at WIT rejected the Memorandum of Understanding which allows for the necessary amalgamation with IT Carlow. But in a second union ballot, 79% voted in favour. At Carlow IT 90% of the staff voted in favour. Last week Minister for Further and Higher Education, Simon Harris, outlined a €40 million fund to help establish the university and three other technological universities.. Senator John Cummins said he has asked the minister to expedite the advertising of the position of chairperson of the governing body. “This will be a very important role for the new university and it is vitally important that the right calibre of person is chosen to enable the new TU to act as the necessary economic driver for the entire South East region,” he said.

Dear old Ireland is pricing itself out of tourist market

I

T MAY be a decent summer, after all, for the tourist industry in rural and coastal Ireland. But summer in the city is going to be pretty quiet. That’s the verdict of Fáilte Ireland, which gave a briefing last week on its projections for the season. “It’s going to be a bit of a year of two halves,” said director of marketing, Niall Tracey . “We’re going to have a summer where large parts of the country actually do very well ... but the cities are struggling and will continue to struggle.” Mr Tracey suggested there would be good availability in the cities with the chance, perhaps, to bag a bargain. That has not been my experience. I found it almost impossible to book accommodation for a family holiday in or around our cities - and that was three months ago when there was no certainty about what would

Michael Wolsey

open or when. Even then, there were no city bargains to be bagged. My requirements were not entirely typical but neither were they very unusual. Let me ex-

plain. Every summer, for several years now, I have enjoyed a holiday in the sun with my family - three generations, at least eight of us, 12 if we all make it. We look for a house with a pool and barbecue area, within walking distance of at least a couple of shops and cafés and not too far from a town. It’s a bit of a luxury, I guess, but not all that expensive when the cost is split across four family groups. Last July we should have been in Malta but Covid had other ideas. The very helpful proprietor agreed to rebook our stay in her beautiful villa for this year but the uncertainty around foreign travel forced us to cancel again, and we have now made a reservation for 2022. So, in March I started looking for an Irish substitute: a house with at least four bedrooms. Since our interests range across several age groups, I thought it might be nice to have a city on our doorstep. Easy, I thought;

weren’t the cities crying out for tourists? Last summer, when we had to cancel Malta, we rented a nice house near the centre of Galway. It was not available this year and neither was anything else in Galway or its accessible suburbs, such as Salthill or Barna. So I took a look at other cities. I ruled out Dublin, because most of us live in or near there, and Belfast: it’s my native city and, if familiarity hasn’t bred contempt, it has at least warned me to avoid it in the marching season. I tried Cork city, ranging out as far as Fota and Ringaskiddy. Nothing doing. I tried Waterford city, out as far as Tramore and Dunmore East. In October, yes. In September maybe. But in July or August, not a chance. And, remember, I began my search in March. I drew a similar blank with

Limerick and Kilkenny and a couple of larger towns, Athlone and Ennis. I gave up the search for one big house and tried for a couple of smaller city rentals, close to each other. I also looked at the possibility of taking two or even three holiday chalets attached to a hotel. The only city properties available were huge buildings, evidently intended as dormitories, or extremely expensive, luxury homes. And I do mean extremely expensive. Ordinary expensive would cover just about everything in Ireland. The house we rented in Galway last year was about twice as dear as the one in Malta which had a swimming pool, sun loungers, a barbecue area, and would have supplied us with bicycles and some gym equipment. Everything else in Galway food, drink, whatever entertainment was open - cost far more

than in Malta. All in all, I estimated that, even allowing for air fares, one week in Galway cost the same as a fortnight in sunny Malta. And this year the gap seems to have widened. The problem is not just with self-catering holidays. The Irish Independent did a survey of hotels and guesthouses and commented that prices would “send shivers down a staycationer’s spine and tempt some to wait just a little longer for European travel to reopen”. In 2020 many people booked Irish holidays for the first time in years and our tourist industry missed a great opportunity to impress this captive audience. The chance is being missed again. The comment I hear most frequently is , “it would be cheaper to go to ...” Lanzarote, Alicante, Corfu, the Algarve. And, indeed, Malta. Which is where I hope to be next year.

Heavenly Hummingbirds

Hummingbird Hawk-moth – a blur of wings! (Photo Justin Ivory) As we head into June and the weather is finally heating up, it’s time to keep an eye out for Hummingbirds. Hummingbirds in Ireland! You’ve got to be kidding! Well yes and no is the answer. These particular aeronautical masters are not birds at all but one of the coolest, most amazing insects you are likely to encounter in Ireland. They are in fact Hummingbird Hawk-moths (Macroglossum stellatarum). This day flying moth resembles a hummingbird as it hovers with an audible hum in front of flowers feeding on the nectar with its long tongue or more correctly proboscis. It is particularly fond of Red Valerian, Buddleia, Honeysuckle, thistles and many other plant species. They have greyish forewings and orange hindwings, the lower half of the body has a distinctive black and white striped pattern. The wings flutter so quickly that it appears to look orange. This fascinating moth likes to fly during the day, particularly in bright sunshine, but will also be seen flying at dawn and dusk, and sometimes even in the rain. Studies have shown that they often return to feed at the same patch of flowers at around the same time each day, a behaviour known as trap-line. As well as behavioural clues, it is also instantly recognisable from its orange hind wings, and black and white chequered pattern on the abdomen. The Hummingbird Hawkmoth is an irregular annual migrant to Britain and Ireland from southern Europe in varying numbers. They can be found in gardens, dry rocky grassland at coastal locations and a variety of other habitats. The food plant for their caterpillars tends to be the various species of bedstraw. The female moths lay their eggs on the buds or flowers of these plant species.

FROM the author of The Irish Cottage comes a new book, exploring old Irish customs and beliefs. Chapters focus on the quarter-day festivities that marked the commencement of each season: ‘Spring: Imbolc’; ‘Summer: Bealtaine’; ‘Autumn: Lughnasa’ and ‘Winter: Samhain’, and also major life events – ‘Births, Marriages and Death Customs’ – and general beliefs in ‘Spirituality and Well-Being’ and ‘The Supernatural’. Focusing on the period from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, Irish Customs and Rituals discusses a time during which many of the practices and beliefs in question went into decline.

Turkey vs Italy is the first game in an already forgettable kickabout. But we can always dream . . . that half-full stadiums will buzz with the echoes of times gone by when we had entertaining hacks in the studio like Eamo and Giles and . . . okay, enough moaning. Anyway, if the sense of schadenfreude wasn’t enough for you as the Brits took a bash at this year’s Eurovision, then their first game is on Sunday, June 13 against Croatia. Come on Croatia! Otherwise, we can cheer for Slovakia, Sweden and Poland, because they should have been playing in Dublin. Moan. Pass the beer.

Ewan McGregor takes on the role of the charismatic chain-smoking designer, with Krysta Rodriguez playing young Liza Minnelli and the Culkin brother Rory as manabout-town director Joel Schumacher.

16 | waterford-today.ie June 9, 2021 6th Anniversary & Birthday Remembrance LYNDA GALLAGHER

In Loving Memory

3rdAnniversary DESI MCEVOY

Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear

15th Anniversary PATRICK O’REGAN - Sadly missed by your auntie and godmother Joan, cousins Lee, Aiden, Wayne and families

In loving memory of a loving daughter and sister Lynda Gallagher (nee Coughlan), late of 62 Morrisson’s Avenue and Clodagh Road, Avondale, Waterford, whose 6th anniversary occurs on 13th June, and Birthday occurs on 19th June. A shadow walks beside me Lynda, Forever by my side, Always there to guide me, Ever since you died, No matter how my life may change, And others carry on, There is a special place within my heart, That is always kept for you. - Never forgotten by your Mam May, love and miss you every day xx. We’d give the world if we could say, We’re going to see our sister today, To hear her voice, to see her smile, To sit and talk just for a little while, To put our arms around her and treasure her with care, Now you have her in your possession Lord, Our sister without compare, To us she was someone very special, Someone set apart, God has you in his keeping Lynda, We have you in our hearts. - Love and miss you so much, wishing you a Happy Birthday in heaven, from your sister Carol, Martin and family, brother Paul, Valarie and family, brother John, Ann and family, nephews and nieces. Forever loved and kisses xxxxxx.

3rd Anniversary William gallagher

In loving memory of William (Willie) Gallagher, late of “Clifden” Marian Park, whose anniversary occurs on the 16th June.

Along the road of suffering, You found a little lane, That took you up to heaven, And ended all your pain, You maybe out of sight, We may be world’s apart, But you are always in our prayers and forever in our hearts. - Love always, your wife Anna, Seamus, Darina, Liam, daughter in law, son in law and grandchildren xx

8th Anniversary PETER SHORTALL

O’Regan, late of 140 Lismore Park, Waterford, whose 15th Anniversary occurs on the 10th June. The lonely way you had to die, Its always on our minds, We wondered if you called our names, We wondered if you cried, No one you loved was by your side, To hear your last sigh, or even say good-bye, So when we are at your graveside Patrick, The pain is hard to bear, To know we have to turn away, And leave you sleeping there, You may be in a graveyard Patrick, But you will never be alone, Because part of us went with you, The day God called you home, They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will ever change the way we feel. So god forgive us if we weep, For a beautiful son we loved and wanted to keep. - Never forget you, Love always, Dad But in our hearts you still live on. Memories are like leaves of gold, They never tarnish or grow old. No more tomorrows for us to share Patrick, But yesterdays memories will always be there. Time slips by, life goes on, But from our hearts you are never gone. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail.A.P. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. O.W.

We wished upon a star last night, We hope it will come true, What we wished for was one hour, To sit and talk with you, To tell you what is happening, Since you went away, And let you know how very much, We miss you every day. - Lots of love from Auntie Maura and Jimmy xx Too young to die, Too precious to lose, Precious people are very few, That’s why Patrick there was only one of you, God must have thought you special Patrick, To take you the way he did, They say he only takes the best, And this he surely did. - Miss you so much Patrick, all our love, your cousin Lloyd, and Lydia, Emily Mae & Lexie xxxx Softly from the shadows You heard a gentle call, Taking the hand of Jesus You quietly left us all, No special day is needed For us to think of you, You will never be forgotten, For we thought the world of you, There is no night without a dawning, No winter without a spring, And beyond death’s dark horizon, Our hearts once more will sing, For those who leave us for a while have only gone away, Out of a restless careworn world, Into a brighter day. - Sadly missing you by your uncle Gerry, aunt Ann, cousins Louise, Ian and Emma

Please Note The deadline for inclusion in the Memoriam Pages is: 4pm on the Friday prior to publication. We cannot guarantee inclusion for memorials submitted after this.

12th Anniversary DOLL KENT

You taught me so much, While you were here in my life, My hero, My mentor, My Dad, My guide. - Your loving son Lee xx

In loving memory of Peter Shortall late of 25 Pinewood Avenue, Hillview, Waterford whose 8th anniversary occurs on the 7th of June. The day you passed, My world stood still, I always loved you, I always will. Why God took you away, It still makes me wonder, Why I have to hurt, And keep falling asunder, All I can do is try pick up the pieces, And remember the good times, Because you always completed me. Will those who think of him today, A little prayer to Jesus say. - Your loving wife Joan xxxx You left us quietly, Your thoughts unknown, You left us memories, We are proud to own, So treasure our Dad, Lord, In your garden of rest, For he was our Dad, And he was the best. - Love from your son Aiden, daughter-in-law Liz and grandchildren Colin, Aoife, Darragh and Blaithin-Colette My hero, My mentor, My Dad, Thank you for making me, The person that I am,

Dad, Day by day you are longer gone, But the pain lingers on, Not a day goes by that you are not in our thoughts, It feels like only yesterday you were here, But now all we have left are fond memories, And your laughter ringing in our ear, My father, my mentor, my friend. - Sadly missed but forever in our hearts, love from your son Wayne and family You always had a smile to share, Time to give and time to care, Someone to talk to, kind and true, Those are the memories we have of you. Will those who think of Peter today, A little prayer to Jesus say. -From your brother in law Raymond What he suffered he told but few, He did not deserve what he went through Tired and weary he made no fuss, But tried so hard to stay with us, We did not see you close your eyes, We did not see you die, All we know was that you were gone, Without a last goodbye, Will those who think of Peter today, A little prayer to Jesus say. -Never to be forgotten, your loving sister in law Maura, Jimmy, Lloyd and Lydia,

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). In loving memory of Doll Kent late of 12 Jail Street and 5 Ashe Road, whose anniversary occurs on June 5th. As I held your hand that evening, I knew I would have to part, With a kind and loving mother, Whom I loved with all my heart. To your graveside I often travel, And picture your face so dear, In silence I stand in sorrow, For a mother I loved so dear, The flowers I placed upon your grave, May wither and decay, But the love I buried with you Mam, Will never go away. They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel. So God forgive me if I weep, For the one I loved and wanted to keep, Dear Jesus up above, Give my mother all my love. - Dearly loved and sadly missed, by all your family

Love And Friendship, Love is like the wild rose-brier; Friendship like the holly-tree. The holly is dark when the rose-brier blooms, But which will bloom most constantly? The wild rose-brier is sweet in spring, Its summer blossoms scent the air; Yet wait till winter comes again, And who will call the wild-brier fair! Then, scorn the silly rosewreath now, And deck thee with the holly’s sheen, That, when December blights they brow, He still may leave thy garland green. - Love always your daughter Joanne & Son in law Damian Mam & Dad Along the road to yesterday, That leads us straight to you, Are memories of the happy days, Together we once knew, And always every evening, We seem to have a way, Of wondering back to meet you, On the road to yesterday. - Love always your daughter Noeleen & Son in law Eamon Mam & Dad You left me beautiful memories, Your love is still my guide, And though I cannot see you, You’re always at my side, - Love always your ,son Anthony Mam & Dad Those we love don’t go away,

You know that place between sleep and awake; That place where you can still remember dreaming; That’s where I will always love you, That’s where I will be waiting... As long as I live you both will live - Love and miss you endlessly your daughter Ann Marie Mam & Dad, If I had the power to turn back the clock, Go back to that house, At the end of the block, The house that was home, When I was a kid I know that I’d love it, More now than I did, If I could be back there at my mother’s knee, And hear once again all the things she told me, I’d listen as I never listened before, For she knew so well just what life had in store, And all the advice my dad used to give, His voice I’ll remember as long as I live, But it didn’t seem really important then, What I’d give for the chance once had, To spend some time with you again, Mam & Dad. - Love Always Your daughter Liz & James Nanny & Grandad, Perhaps they are not really Stars in the Sky, But rather openings where our loved ones, Shine down to let us know they are happy x - Missing you both, James, Darragh, Megan, Sarah, Christopher, Gary, Beth, Kevin, Daniel, Ava, Charlie, Sam & Jake
