Sister’s appeal to hit-and-run driver THE sister of a man who was killed by a hit and run driver as he walked home from the pub almost 40 years ago has appealed for the driver to finally come forward, saying: “It’s never too late to say sorry”. Joseph ‘Joey’ Moroney was found lying on the roadside in Bohadoon, near Dungarvan in the early hours of Sunday, August 8, 1982. His body was several hundred metres from the pub where he had spent the previous e v e n i n g socialising with friends. His body showed signs of a vehicle impact. And gardai have now also renewed an appeal for information into the death of the 23-year-old. In an appeal on RTÉ’s Crimecall recently, Ms Moroney urged the driver who hit her brother to come forward and say why they did not stop and seek help. She said their late mother could never bring herself to

visit her son’s grave. “For [my father’s] funeral, my mother couldn’t go to the grave. Where Joey got killed on the road here, she never travelled the road. And the day he [Joey] was buried she never went to the grave. She never went to the grave until she went in herself,” she said. “I don’t want anyone punished. I just want someone to come forward to say they killed him on the night and why they didn’t stop or why they didn’t go and get help. It is never too late to say sorry,” she added. Meanwhile, Mr Moroney’s best friend Mike described the moment he heard his friend was dead. “The morning after we leaving Joey in Bohadoon, my mother… came home from Mass to tell us that Joey was prayed for, that he was knocked down and killed. “It was like a dagger sticking me in the heart. “It left a big hole in my life when Joey passed away. I hope before I pass away that we will be able to find whoever done this and leave Joey to rest in Continued on next page

‘Maud’ cruises into Waterford

Waterford is leading the charge in improving digital literacy and helping people access broadband connection and free wifi throughout the city and county through a number of initiatives. A new publication ‘Get Connected: WIFI Hotspots and other Services’ is now available on Waterford Libraries website and is regularly updated. Produced by Richard Torney of the Older People’s Council, it aims to help anyone who would like to know where the broadband connection points and free wifi points across the city and county are.

Community safety THE Local Community Safety Partnership is a new government initiative which brings together statutory services, the voluntary and community sector and local councillors to identify and tackle community safety issues locally. Local Community Safety Partnerships are now being piloted in three areas, including in Waterford. Waterford LCSP will have a Zoom meeting on Monday 9th May 2022 at 5pm. Contact loughnane@ waterfordcouncil.ie

‘THE MAUD’ cruise vessel, from the Norwegian cruise line company Hurtigruten, arrived into the Port of Waterford from The Isle of Man with some 528 passengers on board recently. The vessel is the first to visit the port in over two years and is named after one of the most famous polar vessels, explorer Roald Amundsen’s ‘Maud’ from 1917. The Port of Waterford

Company, along with Harbour Master Capt Darren Doyle, offered a warm Waterford welcome to the vessel and her captain on her maiden voyage, with a presentation of a Waterford Crystal Ships decanter. Commenting on the return of cruise business to the Port Capt Doyle said: “We are delighted to again welcome cruise vessels back to the Port of Waterford. This has been

a much anticipated day as it has been over two years since we waved goodbye to our last cruise vessel. “We look forward to welcoming some 27 cruise vessels between now and the end of September with a total of 35,000 passengers and 16,000 crew members which will all deliver a much-needed boost to the regional tourism economy to the tune of €3,500,000 this summer.”

Sister in new appeal to driver

Continued from previous page peace in his grave,” he said. Joey left the pub after closing time, when he planned to make the walk home on his own following a night out. His body was then found lying on the roadside close to where he had spent the night socialising with his best pal, Mike. It had been found by passing motorists who discovered he had been struck by another vehicle. The Moroney family is now making a fresh appeal to anyone with any information relating to the death of their brother to contact gardaí in Dungarvan, or any other station. The incident remains the subject of an active investigation and gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses and information. Anyone with any information on the death of Mr Moroney is being asked to speak with investigating gardaí. They are asked to contact Dungarvan Garda station on (058) 48600, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

UHW staff crisis affecting palliative supports

Some terminally ill patients are unable to receive end-of-life care from the HSE in Waterford due to a “staffing crisis”, it has emerged. The crisis is affecting palliative care provided to people who wish to die at home, with a number of staff having been ruled out due to corona virus and other illnesses. Staff at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) have been informed that the HSE South East Community Healthcare palliative care team could accept referrals for “actively dying patients” only. However, the issue does not affect the hospital’s specialised wing for palliative care, a spokesman confirmed. When contacted, the HSE confirmed there is a temporary shortage of specialist nursing staff within the care team which arose nine days ago and which it believes will be resolved within the next week. The original internal email sent to staff at UHW offered an apology for the sudden drop in the service. “Due to the staffing crisis in Waterford Community Palliative Care Service, we can

only accept referrals for actively dying patients,” it said. Sinn Féin health spokesman and Waterford TD David Cullinane said there needs to be “absolute coordination” between hospital and regional HSE management to provide the service. A spokeswoman for HSE South East Community Healthcare (SECH) said the group “wishes to advise, with regret, that there was a temporary reduction in specialist nursing staff” within Waterford’s palliative care team due to “unforeseen and unavoidable” circumstances. She added: “It is anticipated that services within this team will return to normal levels within the next week. In the interim access to the service will be prioritised based on clinical need. All available supports and services are and will continue to be offered to patients and their families.” She said support remains available to healthcare professionals with the aim of supporting the management of palliative care patients outside of the acute hospital setting.

Tread softly, Mary Lou, when you tread on unionist dreams

I

T IS more than thirty years since Dominic Murray published Worlds Apart, but his book has stood the test of time as a revealing and insightful study of sectarianism in Northern Ireland. It concentrates on the education system and has a section devoted to attitudes at neighbouring schools in the greater Belfast area - one Protestant, one Catholic . They got on well enough, with staff and pupils regularly visiting their neighbours for sporting or cultural events. But relations were civil rather than friendly. There was always an undertow of suspicion, caused by an almost total failure to understand how ‘the other side’ thought and why they did the things they did. The Catholic school, like any Catholic school, had a variety of religious statues and icons

Michael Wolsey

around the place, including, near the entrance, a large statue of the saint the school was named for. Neither staff nor pupils were aware of them. When asked, not one teacher could describe the statue that dominated their hallway Visiting teachers from the Protestant school did notice the statues, however, and saw them as in some way threatening.

“It’s hard to escape the view that a special show is being put on for our benefit,’’ one told Dominic Murray. The Protestant school had a British Union Flag flying in its grounds. Students and staff were as unaware of it as their Catholic counterparts were of the religious icons. They didn’t know when or why it was flown; some didn’t realise it was there at all. But the Catholic school’s teachers did. “They fly the flag to show they are more British than the British themselves,’’ one told Murray. “It is also to let us know that they are the lords and masters.’’ Symbols matter in Northern Ireland, for what they mean to those who display them and for what others think they mean. They matter in a way which is unimaginable on this side of the border. For the first 50 years of its

existence the only symbols allowed in Northern Ireland were unionist. The electoral system gave unionists a complete hold on power in the old Stormont and they were not prepared to share any of it. This unionist dominance spread way beyond the political field. Almost any declaration of Irishness was met with hostility and, sometimes, legal sanction. It was illegal to fly an Irish Tricolour and the Irish language had no status at all. Some parents who wanted to register their children with such commonplace names as Siobhán and Padraig were told: “We can’t record names in a foreign language - what’s that in English?” This refusal to share power, and disrespect for the people with whom they would not share it, led to the upheaval which eventually ended unionist dominance.

Now unionists face into an Assembly election from which Sinn Féin seem likely to emerge as the biggest party. It will be a testing time for unionism and Sinn Féin should be careful not to make it any more difficult, by adopting the sort of supremacist approach taken by unionists in their days of power. Winning the election will not give Sinn Féin anything like the control unionists had in the old Stormont. It is not certain that they can get the Executive running again, but if they do they will have to share authority for the important things, like public health, housing and education. But as the biggest party, Sinn Féin will have control, or at least an influence, on some of those little things that in the north can matter almost as much, the symbolic things that influenced relations between Murray’s two schools: flags, emblems, parades and com-

memorations. And the party will be in a position to set the pace for their cherished ambition of a border poll. I hope they will not try to turn the tables on unionists who behaved so badly in their days of power. They can start by showing a little restraint when the election results come in. Shouts of ‘up the ra’ or ‘tiocfaidh ár lá’ will not get the new era off to a good start. Unionists are not an easy people to love, with their sashes and drums and seventeenth century politics. But they are a part of our country, the orange third of the flag they once banned. Their aspirations should not be disrespected nor their fears ignored. Yeats warned us to tread softly when we tread on the dreams of others. I hope Mary Lou McDonald and Michelle O’Neill remember that when they are celebrating election victory. .

Time on your hands for clocks?

The Irish Museum of Time is hosting the ‘Waterford International Festival of Time’ in Waterford City from May 19th to 22nd. Waterford actually has an extraordinary yet little known connection with traditional Swiss watch and clockmaking, which goes right back to the eighteenth century. Facing oppression under their French and Bernese masters, plans were drawn up in 1782 for 1,000 Swiss Huguenot artisans to uproot and relocate to Ireland, to establish a settlement of master craftsmen where they could flourish. This utopian settlement was given the name of ‘New Geneva’ and parts of Waterford still carry the name today – now, that legacy lives on in the new Irish Museum of Time, which opened in 2021. For the event, the ‘rock stars’ of the international watchmaking world fly in from across the globe to show off their skills, timepieces and knowledge. Admission to the festival is included in a ‘Freedom of Waterford’ ticket. For further details on the inaugural festival see www. waterfordtreasures.com

Brave nurse Laura back in dream home

A WATERFORD mum-of-three, who was the focus of ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland’ on RTE recently, has described the transformation of her home as “life-changing”. Laura Sheridan was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and received her treatment while caring for her four-year-old twin boys, Noah and Joshua, who have a form of autism. “She was diagnosed with Lymphoma, and she was absolutely crushed,” her dad Skippy told presenter Baz Ashmawy, describing how she learned of her diagnosis soon after finding out her sons were autistic. Showing Baz around her home, Laura pointed out the dangers it held for her children, from them climbing out windows and over the banister, to how they have had broken bones in the past. “They want to jump off everything,” she said. Laura had tried to make her home safe for her children, but feared she “made it more like a prison”.

Laura Sheridan and her children on DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland, on RTE. Over nine days, the Sheridans moved out and the DIY SOS team moved in, reconfiguring the house. Noah and Joshua were given a sensory-friendly bedroom beyond anything they could have imagined, complete with climbing wall and monkey bars for all their active needs. one

of the most impactful changes was the addition of a massive window overlooking the garden so she could watch her children from the kitchen and be sure of their safety. Laura told Baz and the team they had brought magic into her house. “I hope when you go home [tonight], your families

know how special you are because not everyone could or would do what you have done here. “If you were ever in trouble, I would do the same for you because you have helped me in my hardest time. And I swear for the rest of my life I will never, ever forget it,” she said.

Dignity for the refugees

Councillor Eamon Quinlan has reacted to reports that tents may be needed to accommodate women and children fleeing the war in Ukraine, by seeking a lease on the still empty Ferrybank Shopping Centre to house those seeking refuge from the war. Speaking at a recent meeting, the Fianna fail councillor highlighted representations he was receiving from people across his constituency, voicing concerns about the reported plan for tents as one that was “substandard for the dignity of the Ukrainian families”. “Indefinitely using school sports halls, potentially pitching large numbers of tents etc while all the time there is a very large shopping centre sitting idle is ridiculous,” he said. Responding to Cllr Quinlan’s enquiries, Waterford’s Director of Services Mr Michael Quinn confirmed that the Ferrybank Shopping Centre was “on the list” of identified properties that the local authorities were exploring as potential reception and accommodation centres for the local authority’s Ukrainian allocation.

Humble Hawthorn – Magnificent Mayflower

book of the week

with Justin Ivory

As we head into May over the coming weeks the countryside will soon be adorned and lit up with an exuberance of snowy white blossoms. Hedgerows, field boundaries and trees seem to be dressed as for a wedding or a communion. What is responsible for this resplendent erumpent display? It is the Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna). This native, deciduous tree, which in winter looks so stark, bleak, gnarly and tough with vicious thorns, in May breaks into wonderous blossom. The timing of its’ flowering gives rise to its more common name the Mayflower. It is the white blossom of the Hawthorn that Shakespeare refers to as “the darling buds of May” in one of his most famous sonnets – Sonnet No. 18. Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, Known by many names – Mayflower, Maybush, Quickthorn, Hagthorn, Haw, Maythorn, May, Mayblossom, Bread and Cheese Tree and the Fairy Tree, it has a long association with the fairy folk in Irish folklore. Fairy rings and Hawthorn trees seem to go hand in hand. To this day you will see many a field with isolated Hawthorn trees and an untouched circle around it where the farmer dare not touch it for fear of incurring the wrath of the fairy folk. The Hawthorn’s genus name Crataegus comes from the Greek kratos, which means strength and refers to the hardness of the Hawthorn’s wood. The simple, delicate beauty of the 5-petalled flowers belie their bittersweet aroma which can be reminiscent of rotting meat! Flies are attracted to this and act as pollinators for the Hawthorn. The flowers give way to hardy, red berries known as haws coming into the autumn and are an important source of food for wildlife during the winter.

better call saul season 6 Netflix SO, Better Call Saul season 6 has finally arrived. Who’d have thought a prequel would survive six seasons. The end of Better Call Saul means we’ve reached the end of our time with Jimmy McGill, and by extension, Kim Wexler. It’s strange how this show has morphed from a not-quite-necessary prequel series chronicling the rise of everyone’s favourite slimeball lawyer (Bob Odenkirk), to an intimate show about rival brothers, to a series about wholesome lawyer Kim Wexler’s (Rhea Seehorn) journey to the dark side. And it will get darker . . .

BUDGET recipes, you can’t go wrong — especially when the cost of heating the hob is more than the ingredients for the dinner. So here is one of our favourites. One-pan spaghetti. It will even save you on the cost of turning on the water to wash the pots. Your staples here are meatballs and tomato sauce, and if you are clever about it, you’ll get a few dinners in a row and save more all round. Some prefer pork mince, others beef; then there are the rebels who mix pork and beef. But would you really cross a cow and a pig?

EDGAR Winter’s tribute album to his brother, the legendary blues guitarist Johnny Winter is a serious who’s who for the guitar players out there, and features Gregg Bissonette, Joe Bonamassa, Doyle Bramhall II, John McFee, Robben Ford, Billy Gibbons, David Grissom, Taylor Hawkins, Warren Haynes, Steve Lukather. Yes, this is purely for the axeman but even the budding young guitar players will learn a lot from listening to some 17 timeless classics and seering riffs that will take the scalp off of ye. But as always with something like this, it does sound better cranked up to 11.

Birthday Remembrance for John Cahill, late of 94 St. John’s Park, whose birthday occurs on the 12th of May. A rose once grew where all could see, Sheltered beside a garden wall, And as the days passed swiftly by, It spread its branches straight and tall, One day a beam of light shone through, A crevice that had opened wide, The rose bent gently toward its warmth, Then passed beyond to the other side, Now you who deeply feel its loss, Be comforted, the rose blooms there, It’s beauty even greater now, Nurtured by God’s own loving care. - From your loving family

The day you left us mother Our hearts just broke in two, The smallest part is still with us, And the biggest part with you For the rest of our lives we will miss you mother, Our secret tears still flow Oh, how we really loved you No one will ever know. We miss your smile, Your joking ways, we miss the things you used to say, And when old times we do recall, It’s then we miss you most of all. You were always there When we needed you, No task too great or small, With loving heart and willing hands, For us you did it all. Look around your garden Lord, And when she turns and smiles, Put your arms around her, And hold her for a while. -Sadly missed by daughter Marie, sons Michael, Bernard & John, daughters-in-law and grandchildren They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel. Gone from home that smiling face, Those cheerful, happy ways, The heart that won so many friends, In bygone, happy days. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. -Always remembered by son Paul, Sharon and Shannon. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there. I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain, When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the soft stars that shine at night, Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. -Never forgotten by daughter Angela
