Introducing the new Station Commander. Wing Commander Katherine ‘Rusty’ Ingram (Rust being her maiden name) started in post as the Commanding Officer of Shrivenham Station on 18 August 2025. Taking over from Wing Commander Gavin Thomas, she has assumed responsibility as Head of Establishment, overseeing the provision of real-life support and governance to enable the Defence Academy, and other Station-based organisations, to deliver their outputs. The Station delivers services through the Joint Service Personnel Administration, Health and Fitness Services, Medical and Dental Support, Families and Welfare Support, Chaplaincy Services, Security Services (in partnership with the MOD Guarding Agency), Logistic Support, Accommodation and Messing Services and Estates and Infrastructure Management (in partnership with Serco) and Local Community Engagement.
As the new Commanding Officer of Shrivenham Station, I would like to take this opportunity to say 'hello', and to extend a very warm welcome to all families who have just arrived here. I am delighted to have started in post. Having just spent three years in France as a liaison officer with the French Air and Space Force, I feel exceptionally privileged to be coming back to this energetic hub of learning and innovation, where an international presence is welcomed and celebrated.
There is a huge amount of activity going on across the estate to maintain our beautiful grounds and buildings, some of which are of immense historical interest. The Station team of military, civil servants and contractors work hard to keep the estate safe, secure and functional, and to support the outputs of the Defence Academy and the multiple organisations that reside here. While the maintenance program aims to minimise disruption, your patience is appreciated as improvement works are carried out in buildings including the Jubilee Centre and others across the estate. You may also be interested to know that the Defence Academy is transforming two of its c100 year old buildings (Burgoyne House and Kitchener Hall) into near carbon-neutral facilities by integrating advanced green energy technologies such as air source heat pumps, photo voltaic arrays and rainwater harvesting systems. This transformational refurbishment project demonstrates that historic structures can meet modern sustainability goals without compromising their heritage. The upgrades will lead to a dramatic emissions reduction, with over 70% of carbon emissions cut across buildings, and some achieving 90%. The Academy is recognised as a trailblazer in adopting this energy technology into its historic buildings, and is sharing lessons across wider Defence organisations.
In terms of administration and wellbeing, the Welfare team and Joint Support Administration Unit (JSAU) work tirelessly to support Service personnel and their families and are always available to provide
assistance or signpost you to other specialist organisations who can. The Station Chaplaincy is also available for spiritual guidance and support. The Welfare team and the Chaplaincy are currently based in the Haven, near the front gate of the Station. Please do feel free to come and see them.
In the wider community, the Op Lazurite team continue to manage the integration of Entitled Personnel (EP) through the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP), which was launched on 1 April 2021 and was closed to new applications on 1 July 2025. The transition of families through Shrivenham will come to a close at the end of this year, although there will be some settled EP families remaining in the area. Collaboration between the local community, schools and incoming families has been facilitated by the Lazurite team and the Vale of White Horse County Council. Your continued welcome to integrating families within the community is much appreciated.
There are a huge variety of activities, clubs and associations available for you to join at Shrivenham. I have already met members of some of the fabulous organisations supporting our families and young people, including the Scouts, Guides and DAFFYs. Please make full use of them to widen your community network and enrich your time here – they also rely on your membership to flourish. There are many social events to look out for this autumn, including the Station Fireworks on 5 November, which is also open to the local community.
I look forward to meeting many of you in the following months, and with the help of the Station team, supporting you during your time at Shrivenham. If you want to raise any concerns, have any ideas to improve the station community or simply want to chat, please feel free to get in contact.
With very best wishes,
Rusty
As parents, you always want what’s best for your children You want to do everything in your power to watch them learn, play, grow and thrive
At Puddle Ducks that difference is obvious
It’s the baby who’s found new confidence in the water. The nervous toddler who now fearlessly jumps in The shy child who’s made a new group of friends
Give them the best start in swimming and you’ll see the difference in their confidence, courage and capabilities
Join us at Shrivenham Cleycourt Manor, Cleyfields, Bourton, Oxon, SN6 8HZ. We run Baby & Pre-school and Swim Academy lessons thoughout the week.
Join us Pinewood School, Bourton, Shrivenham, SN6 8HZ.
We run Baby & Pre-school lessons on Sundays.
Puddle Ducks Baby & Pre-school programme (from birth to 4 years) uses our bespoke guided-learning approach to empower both child and adult in the water giving them so much more than the essential life skill that is learning to swim. With our teachers your little one can learn skills that will set them up for life; listening, talking, socialising, sharing, taking turns and making friends.
Swim Academy (for 4-10 year olds) has a supported learning approach that works.
Levels 1 & 2 have our teachers in the water with your child and we keep our ratios small. With a maximum teacher to child ratio of 1:4, your child will never wear a fixed buoyancy aid. Our expert teachers can support swimmers on an individual level, to discover their body’s natural buoyancy in the water, a crucial skill were they to ever fall into water.
By building up the strokes step-by-step, we create not only confident but beautiful swimmers –the distances and stamina will come with time but by perfecting the strokes, our swimmers have the foundations to take their swimming journey as far as they want!
Scan the QR code to see all our pools, choose a class and request a FREE TRIAL* or call us on: 01666 577377 to ask your swimming questions. *T&Cs apply.

It’s
In July we attended the remembrance service to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Little Baldon air disaster. A Hastings aircraft crashed on 6 July 1965 and all 41 people aboard, including 6 crew, perished. It was a very moving service, and we were pleased to sing for the families and remember those who died.
In mid-July, we held our summer concert, ‘Songs from Stage and Screen’ at St Alban’s Church, Watchfield. It was a very warm day, and both the choir and the audience did well to keep as cool as possible! We were joined by members from the Brize Norton and Lyneham Military Wives Choirs too, so it was great to have so many of us all singing together. We had some special solo performances, as well as some guitar and drum accompaniment too and everyone worked so hard to make the afternoon a success. We are very grateful to all those in the local community who came to support us, and we hope to see even more of you at our next concert!
The summer concert was, sadly, the last performance with our MD Jon Driver who has directed the choir for 4 years. We are very grateful for his commitment and
enthusiasm. From September, we welcome our new MD Tone Brown. Tone has a wealth of experience directing choirs as well as his own orchestra, and we are so excited to start the new term under his direction.
In August, some of our members were lucky enough to appear on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ to mark the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day. It was such an exciting day, and the choir sung two songs, live to the nation! We are so proud of the choir network, and especially those from the Defence Academy choir who represented us!
To round off the summer, some
of our members supported the Corsham & Colerne choir at the White Horse Military Show. The Show is a huge weekend of events, re-enactments, music and immersive experiences and the Choir had a huge repertoire of songs to learn! It was great to lend our voices to the occasion.
The Defence Academy Military Wives choir is for female spouses and partners of serving and retired military personnel, serving service women, and female support staff, including Civil Servants, Serco, Cranfield and other contractors. We are always delighted to welcome new or returning members.
Our main rehearsal takes place on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm until 9.30pm at St Alban’s Church, Axis Road, Watchfield. We also meet on Monday mornings from 10.30am until noon at the Jubilee Centre, Faringdon Road, Watchfield, Please pop into either of these meetings for more information! You can also contact us via email at defenceacademy@ militarywives.org

Established in 1956, the Defence Academy Golf Club offers a beautiful parkland 18-hole golf club on your doorstep. Set within the confines of the Shrivenham campus, the club provides a sporting and welfare facility for MOD employees and their families at the Defence Academy, enabling them to take up and enjoy the game of golf. The club is open to Service Personnel, MOD employees and contractors working on site, and their families, and to the wider military community located at nearby MOD sites. The club welcomes veterans and has a bespoke membership pathway to encourage former Service Personnel to join this special club.
We are affiliated to England Golf, the governing body of golf in the UK, allowing members to achieve and maintain official handicaps. We offer a 5666-yard, Par 70 course made up of 14 greens (4 are shared), so you get the full 18-hole experience. In addition, members can use the practice range, a dedicated practice hole,
a practice putting area and a netted bay for warming up before a round of golf. We recognise the demands on staff and students at the Defence Academy and offer membership packages or ‘pay & play’ options to suit your needs. What better way is there to relax and improve your wellbeing. Please contact the club manager, Karen Banbrook, for details.
Operating under the umbrella of the Defence Academy Athletics Union, the club looks forward to our 70th Anniversary in 2026. The
club and course have developed over the years, growing from small beginnings to the current 18-hole layout. We are one of a very small number of military golf courses left in the UK. By the early 1980’s the course consisted of just 9 holes and grew in phases as space become available when additional sport fields were introduced at the Watchfield end of the campus. The course is well suited to the needs of beginners, with excellent practice facilities and is less crowded than many public courses.
The club offers a range of member competitions from April to October. The club championships are held in June each year. Matches against other military and civilian teams and clubs has always been part of the club’s activities. Today, members take part in competitive and social golf team matches against other clubs across the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire area, along with matches against military societies. The oldest trophy competed for is perhaps the Shrivenham Cup, played against Frilford Heath Golf Club, since 1953.
Social golf events provide a perfect opportunity for fund raising. The club supports two charities. The On Course Foundation, a charity that supports the recovery of wounded, injured or sick Service Personnel , and veterans, through the medium of golf and more locally, Pennyhooks Farm Trust, supporting adults on the Autistic Spectrum. After a busy 2024 season, £1200 was raised, and each charity received £600 from the golf club.
The long association with Frilford Heath Golf Club is celebrated in the annual Shrivenham Cup competition. Golfers at the Royal Military College of Science, RMCS, the predecessor of the Defence Academy were active before the course at Shrivenham was created. In those longforgotten days, players hosted matches at Frilford or elsewhere. The Shrivenham Cup was presented in 1953 by the RMCS and has been competed for since at Frilford. From 1953, Frilford has won the Cup 53 times, the longest winning
run of which was between 1982 and 1999 inclusive. Defence Academy has won 14 times, with a 5-year winning run between 1968 and 1972 inclusive. It was not played in 2020 due to the pandemic.
The Shrivenham Cup – 2024 Defence Academy Golf Club Captain, WO2 Marcus Murcott with Professor Derrick Neal, Frilford Heath Golf Club. 2024 Match was tied. The 2025 match is planned for 20th September.

WEDNESDAY
By the time you read this, the Autumn Term will be well under way, and with it another brilliant year of activities for members of 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham Scout Group. But as I write, it is still July. The Summer Term is building to a fantastic finale: the Beavers’ Summer Party; the Cubs’ trip to the Royal International Air Tattoo; and the Scouts’ five days of outdoor adventures in North Wales. There’s a sense of satisfaction as we think of all the great things we’ve already experienced; a sense of energy and excitement as we anticipate what’s still to come; and a hint of wistfulness as we prepare to say goodbye to members who are moving away, returning to their home countries, or heading elsewhere for the next stage of their Scouting journey.
This year, we have welcomed members from Canada, France, Ireland, Malaysia, and the USA, as well as from all over the UK and from the local community. We’ve done so many things over the past year that it’s interesting to ponder what each person’s favourite memory might be. It might be raft-building, or it could be practising safe bicycle handling at Faringdon Cycle Park; or delighting in the bluebells while exploring at Badbury Clump Iron Age Hill Fort. It might be gathering under cloudless skies on Dragon Hill to renew our Promises as part of our St George’s Day celebrations; sleeping out under the stars to raise funds for homeless veterans as part of ‘The Great Tommy Sleepout’; or parading and laying a wreath at Remembrance. It might be trying Morris Dancing,
gathering round the campfire, or learning about Birds of Prey at our fantastic Family Camp in June. It might be climbing on real rock during a sun-filled weekend in the Peak District; getting muddy while dam-building with volunteers at Tuckmill Meadow; or standing, awestruck, on a mountain summit in Snowdonia. It might be cooking on an open fire; playing wide games by torchlight; or venturing out on a night hike. Then again, it could be working the locks on an overnight journey on a canal narrowboat; feeling history come alive while pressing the keys on an Enigma Machine at Bletchley Park; or learning to save a life with a defibrillator.
Whatever each person’s favourite memory might be, we have all grown as a result of these experiences. It’s heartening that those who are leaving us will be taking with them such great memories of activities they enjoyed and of friendships made while they were here with us in Watchfield & Shrivenham. And
who knows? One day, a postcard might arrive from halfway round the world – from an old friend who spent a great year here and still remembers hiking with us in the Welsh mountains, learning knot-tying skills and making a giant catapult that fired water balloons, or playing games on the ancient chalk downs of England
For those remaining here, the Scouting journey will resume in September. We will welcome new arrivals, make friends, and have new adventures together, and it will be just as exciting and rewarding as it has ever been.
If you would like to find out about volunteering with us, please email Helen Wright, the Group Scout Leader on:

It was a sunny June weekend when the Rainbows and Brownies of both Shrivenham and Watchfield decided it was about time they set sail across the 7 seas in search of some pirate treasure. The lack of proximity to the sea proved to be no obstacle and off we all went for a weekend of fun, friendship and treasure.
The Brownies arrived first and wasted no time in getting to some serious crafting, they made a parrot to start with and decorated their own pencil case before it was time bed.
The next morning saw the arrival of the last few Brownies and the Rainbows. As they arrived, they caught up on the crafts from the previous evening but soon enough it was time for some cake and a drink. No adventure is complete without a good amount of cake and squash. First on the agenda was learning some communication skills, semaphore to be exact. The girls were sorted into their patrols and off they want to learn how to send messages across with
Semaphore, they decorated their own ginger bread pirates and did some great team games. Lunch time came next and the brilliant organisation of lunch preorders saved us all from chaos and both girls and leaders sat down to a well earnt sandwich and squash. The activities continued after lunch with some grass sledding, curling and a
waterfight to cool off in the sun. The day finished much like the first, lots of tired Rainbows and Brownies sat around to listen to a bed time story for snuggling down in their sleeping bags for a well-earnt rest.
The last day of camp saw the most important activity for Pirates – searching for treasure with
Despite some blustery autumnal weather with scorching sun and a few downpours, the x18 girls and x4 adult helpers had a great weekend at the Defence Academy for their annual camp. A nighttime nature walk followed by cocoa and camp doughnuts on Friday set the tone for a weekend of relaxing! Yoga by Lucy in the morning offered some stretches and
meditation then the girls visited the ESS allotments. Janet was fantastic is helping the girls forage for food and select flowers for their bookmarks. After home made pizza, they got stuck into making their well being packages - lavender bath bombs, essential oil soaps, lavender posies and sachets. Friendship bracelets were made in the evening with Mocktails and some great stories.
friends. They learnt how to use a compass, walked the plank and cracked some code which led to that all important treasure. None of this could be possible without the volunteers that gave up their weekend so that the Rainbows and Brownies could have this great adventure. Thank you to everyone who came to help over the weekend.
On Sunday after some more morning yoga, there was a bit more crafting followed by striking camp and clearing up!
Many thanks to the Station Commander for her visit and allowing the camp to go ahead and to all the adult helpers, Anne and Amy Lynn, Helen Wynn and Lucy Giles.
The Guides in Shrivenham and Watchfield are always looking for new volunteers so that we can continue to offer a range of fantastic experiences to the girls across all of our sections. If you are looking to pick up new skills, boost your CV, or just want to make new friends please do consider giving some of your time!

The Defence Academy Hockey Club (DAHC) is celebrating its most successful season in recent memory, marking a year of impressive results and unprecedented participation. The club secured an impressive 8 wins out of 12 fixtures against seven different teams. A 12-0 victory against our local rivals (North Wilts) marked a highlight of the season, with Old Chelts and Devizes pushing us hard to narrow losses. This wide array of matches was enabled by a surge in membership, with players eager to compete in every match which allowed us to compete against a huge array of quality military and civilian opponents.
Traditionally, DAHC has relied on members from the Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC) and Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) (ICSC(L)). However, this year saw a diverse influx of players from across the Station. Thanks to a concerted drive to spread awareness more widely, the club welcomed recruits from Mandarin and Russian language courses, the Guided Weapons Course, the Battlefield Technology Course, and several service family members. This broadened recruitment has injected new energy and talent into the squad.
The club’s ethos of inclusivity and competitive spirit has been a driving force behind its success. Newcomers and experienced players alike have thrived in
a supportive environment, fostering both individual and collective development. In recognition of outstanding contributions, DAHC awarded full colours to seven members and half colours to eight, alongside three special club player awards—testament to the quality and camaraderie within the team.
Looking ahead, DAHC faces the challenge of rebuilding after losing 90% of its current squad at the end of the season. The club is determined to further expand its reach, aiming to attract experienced players, returning hockey enthusiasts, and complete newcomers for the next campaign. With a winning record, a vibrant membership, and a renewed commitment to growth, the Defence Academy Hockey

DAHC trains on Monday evenings, between 6pm and 7.30pm, on the astro pitch behind the JSCSC East Wing car park, although training may switch to Tuesday evenings in case of Bank Holidays. Matches usually fall on a Wednesday or Thursday evening.
Membership is open to all staff, all ranks and grades assigned to the DefAc, all genders and levels of experience, as well as Service Family members aged 16 and up. All kit is available on loan; the only thing you’d need to bring is your own training gear (astro shoes recommended) and, for matches, a mouthguard.
The Defence Academy Shooting and Conservation Club (DASCC) has for half a century ensured that UK and international military personnel serving on courses or teaching at the Defence Academy have the opportunity to nurture the wider estate through conservation activity and also to experience driven game shooting. Last season, locals, staff and students from across the UK, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Jamaica, France, Australia, NZ, Canada, USA and Holland all had the opportunity to try this most English of pastimes with their families.
The club fosters excellent relations with the landowners who border the academy and this year many of the children got involved in ‘Hungry Gap Supplementary Feeding’ where songbirds are fed a special mixture of high energy grains throughout the winter months in support of Natural England’s initiative on behalf of DEFRA.
Conservation work this year included extensive rubbish collection including the collection of 1000s of old tree sleeves from
a 2010 plantation, cutting back of rides, bug hotel building (where logs are stacked into a pile to provide habitats for insects and a platform for mosses), and tree planting. DASCC volunteers have planted nearly 2000 trees, a mixture of Hawthorn, Blackthorn,
We have an active younger element who attend with parents to foster an early understanding of the countryside and to get away from those screens!
The shoot is run by the ACSC COS, Lt Col Rupert King-Evans with his committee and is managed by Sqn Ldr (retd) Steve Palfrey, assisted by a deputy and part time gamekeeper. We are all looking forward to next season and encouraging a growing number of enthusiasts and supporters.
Please get involved. There is no cost involved, please come along and see what we are about!
We started the summer holidays with our annual Pony Club Camp and are so incredibly proud of how hard our pupils worked and how wonderful our ponies were. Their demonstration on the Wednesday for their families was a triumph.

For further information on christenings and baptism please do not hesitate to contact the Station Chaplaincy Coordinator Leigh Hyde by emailing leigh.hyde@da.mod.uk
Life can often be busy, stressful, and full on. Sometimes it can feel like we are on a treadmill, never achieving anything, and exhausting ourselves in the process. Taking time for ourselves often slips down our list of priorities.
If you are looking to find a precious moment of peace, calm, and tranquillity, then come to The Haven.
The Haven is located in Building 43, beside the chaplaincy centre. Opposite Kitchner Hall. It is a quiet space, where all are welcome to sit and enjoy the best free refreshments in the West. Why not enjoy a book; assemble a jigsaw; or colouring. If that’s not enough, spend some time getting lost in your own world with LEGO, play a tune on the keyboard or bang on the drums or play a boardgame or two, air hockey and table football can also be played.
Come and discover what The Haven has to offer.
The Haven is open to all during the working day and evening, and you are welcome to stay for as long as you need.
For more info, please contact Chaplaincy Coordinator, Leigh Hyde, 0792 016 2664, leigh.hyde@da.mod.uk

The Academy Quilters group meet on a Monday night and a Thursday morning. Email the tutor… quiltfairy@btinternet. com and discover why I had such a great time.
Several years ago, we had just received notification of our next posting… Shrivenham in the UK. Having recently discovered, happily, that I was expecting our first child, I wasn’t sure I really wanted to travel.
As you can imagine, my man and I had long conversations, looked at what there was to do and join at that posting …… discovered there was a long running quilt group and the end result was…of course I went to the UK.
Was happy and excited at the prospect of being able to join the group, I messaged ahead, had long conversations with the so kind and patient tutor, got myself a place booked and stocked up with patchwork fabric so I was ready to “hit the ground running”.
So, so very glad I joined the Academy Quilters…I was very well looked after, was supported and encouraged through every new procedure. What I wasn’t
expecting was the “button away” support I received outside classroom meeting times. Believe me, there were quite a few late night/early morning sessions that held me together throughout my pregnancy and initial unexpected homesickness.
Massive, heartfelt thanks to my lovely tutor and great quilt friends ……because of the love and support I received in the much too short a time we were posted there, I returned home with a quilt for my baby.
Plus lots of quilt friends, a head full of future projects, a lovely sewing machine, a skill and confidence to start my own little business and wonderful memories of my time in UK. Oh, and a bouncing 8lb baby boy to make more quilts for as he grows up.
If you have the chance and time when posted to Shrivenham, go get your selves enrolled in the Academy Quilters group and have a wonderful time.
Katie-Anne now happily back home in Australia with two boisterous boys and several more quilts!
Being able to learn a skill that I could then use when I returned home was a bonus when I joined The Academy

Our new academic year starts in September but whenever you are reading this it is not too late to join our friendly community. The Language Centre offers a great opportunity to learn or improve your English as a second language or take advantage of our evening foreign language classes.
The lessons are fun and sociable as we believe this is the best environment in which to learn. In addition to improving your language skills, the classroom is a great place to make new friends and find out about other countries and their cultures.
The Language Centre provides ‘English as a Foreign Language’ to the dependants and families of international officers attending courses at the Defence Academy, Cranfield University and the local community. We also provide tuition in French, Spanish, German and Italian to families across the entire Shrivenham Station site and the local community.
Both group and private lessons are available to suit all abilities, from beginner through to advanced. There is also the opportunity to be tutored in your own home.
So, if you know anyone struggling with the English language – au pairs, overseas visitors for example – please contact us.
Increase confidence
Everyone who attends English or foreign language lessons regularly can expect to:
· become more confident and fluent in speaking the language
· improve their listening skills
· learn lots of new vocabulary
· make considerable progress in their understanding of grammar
We achieve this by working our way through a coursebook. We also use games, role-plays and short presentations to make learning more effective and enjoyable. Most of our work is in pairs or small groups.
Students can elect to sit diploma examinations in English from the Cambridge Examination board on completion of their courses and we also run exam preparation lessons.
Classes for Children
Specially tailored classes for children are available in your own home.
The Language Centre is open during the day for English classes and in the evening for foreign language tuition.
Find us at:
7 Axis Road, opposite St Alban’s Church. For more information, call us on: 01793 784881 or email: languagecentre7@gmail.com
We offer students 1:1 English and Foreign Language tuition with the option to be taught in the privacy of your own home.
Email us on languagecentre7@gmail.com or drop in and speak to us about how we can help you.

In the first term English students start classes apprehensively and not knowing anyone. Everything is foreign to them. By half-term, students have made connections in class and through a varied schedule of outings and projects.
The social programme is fun and, at the same time, improves the language skills of students. Our active social programme includes craft and baking sessions as well as outings, the first one this year being to Bath Christmas Market. The highlight of the year is undoubtedly Royal Ascot.
