Letters from 171 Cedar Arts Center “Everything you can imagine is real.” -Pablo Picasso

T

his year, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of 171 Cedar Arts Center! That’s 50 years of success in our mission as a community arts center offering exceptional educational art instruction, exhibiting current artists, and presenting live performances. 171 Cedar Arts Center has enriched the lives of so many by enabling them to experience art whether visual arts, pottery, performing arts, culinary arts, and even martial arts like fencing and tai chi. Our scholarships (over $13,000 awarded this fiscal year) enable students who might not otherwise experience the arts in a “hands on” fashion, the ability to take lessons and classes here at 171. In this year of transitions, you may have noticed positive changes to the Drake House. Through a capital grant from the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Southern Finger Lakes, we were able to paint the exterior and replace the main entrance doors and upgrade the south doors for full handicap accessibility. We were also able to replace appliances and add much needed portable appliances to provide for our popular “hands on” culinary programs. We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful community through the arts and for our extremely talented and dedicated faculty. We are thankful for our incredible staff members who not only keep our operations running smoothly, but who also use their creativity to enhance our programs, exhibits, and performances. We appreciate the ongoing participation and generosity of our members and donors, and we need your continued support! Finally, we are excited about moving into the 2018-2019 fiscal year and beyond! We have just launched a new website, expanded our programming, and are looking forward to some fabulous new exhibits and performances. Please come and take advantage of all that 171 Cedar Arts has to offer as your community arts center. We are looking forward, imagining the future, and positioning 171 for the next 50 years - powering art forward! With appreciation,

Beth Landin, Executive Director

T

he 2017-2018 fiscal year was a year of change and transition. Most notably, Lynn Dates left her position as Executive Director at the end of August, after eight years in the role. We can’t thank her enought for her tireless dedication, her partnership with other educators in the arts community to provide outstanding arts education opportunities, and her support for artists in the community. In November, we were pleased to welcome Beth Landin as the new Executive Director. She brings significant experience and energy to the role. Please stop by 171 Cedar Arts Center sometime and say “hello.” Our community continues to be engaged in 171, in so many ways. One group of dedicated volunteers, who give so freely of their time and expertise, is our Board of Directors. This year, we welcomed two new Board members, Xavier LaFosse and Laura Coleman, who will lend their business and legal expertise, respectively. Holly Hatch, Fred Herbst, Andrea Lynch, and Jennifer Warner rolled off the Board this year, and we thank them for their service. We appreciate the continued participation and support of our dedicated staff and faculty, community volunteers, generous donors and our membership base who make it all possible! Sincerely,

Eric Elder, Board President

Dining in Flight

On June 9th, 171 hosted our Dining in Flight fundraiser gala celebrating our 50 year anniversary! We held the event at the National Soaring Museum, high atop Harris Hill. Food and libations were themed around three in flight destinations - Italy, France, and Singapore. The Duvid Smering Quintet featuring Cookie Coogan provided the evening’s entertainment, and their lively jazz inspired lots of fun on the dance floor. Children were also invited with their parents to celebrate with us through art projects, facepainting, and a variety of great activities. The National Soaring Museum was open for tours, and we got to watch a breathtaking sunset over Harris Hill. We are so grateful to have had nearly 250 guests come to Dining in Flight, and we appreciate each of our attendees, donors, and sponsors who supported this 50th anniversary event. Your participation in events like these makes all that we do possible!

Mosaic In July, we featured our 2018 Summer Mosaic fundraiser with 31 regional artists, each exhibiting 50 pieces of incredible art! The exhibit opened on July 19th with a VIP reception, and continued on July 20th with a Mosaic Bash. Guests enjoyed great food, music, dancing, and selecting from over 1,500 paintings, photos and ceramics to start a collection or to add to their existing collections. Thank you to all who attended and contributed.

Julia Cancelo On December 13, 2018, our Spanish instructor, Julia Cancelo, gained her American citizenship! Julia was born in Spain and moved with her family to Venezuela at the age of 2. When she was 17, Julia moved to Canada to study English. She then received her degree in Economics in Venezuela, and began her professional life in management roles in commercial and financial areas at multinational companies. She started her own company in Costa Rica, where she lived for four years. When asked about gaining her citizenship, Julia had this to say: “The naturalization ceremony was like nothing I have ever experienced. The court room was filled with people from 30 different countries, our families and friends, all united with the same purpose: become an American and part of this beautiful land.” Julia is excited to be teaching Spanish at 171, and views it as an opportunity to share the richness and diversity of her culture with others in hopes of bettering their lives. We’re so thankful to have her and so proud of her amazing achievement!

Duvid Smering We lost an invaluable and deeply loved member of our team this past year. Duvid Smering passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on July 8, 2018. Duvid graduated from the Armed Forces School of Music in 1966 and performed with the 328th Army Band for three years. He attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music and SUNY Brockport, working as a staff musician in Brockport’s dance department for 5 years. Duvid taught in the Corning area for over 20 years, and he was the lead tenor sax player for the XRAY Big Band performing in the Wellsboro, PA and Southern Tier areas. Duvid was a brilliant music teacher and a kind friend to anyone lucky enough to have met him. He touched countless hearts in this community with his warm and funny personality, and he will be missed.
