Senior Capstone 2025
The Senior Capstone is a culminating learning activity that encourages critical thinking and research, promotes conversation and problem solving, and results in real-life application of prior and acquired knowledge.
Students concentrate on areas of personal interest. Using an inquiry-based method, they connect their acquired knowledge to life experiences, thus deepening their awareness of what they learned.
The goal of this learning activity is not only to sharpen and expand the students’ method of research but also to develop interpersonal and communication skills and to encourage personal growth. Ultimately, the students learn how to learn, and hopefully enjoy the process.
Each senior selects an area of interest and investigates her topic during the course of her final year at Villa Maria Academy. Students receive support in determining topics and forming “essential questions” about their chosen topics.
Under the guidance of mentors, parents, teachers, and the Senior Capstone coordinator, the student researches, discusses and applies her knowledge. The year culminates in a class sharing of the projects.

Place: BINTO
Area of Interest: Physician Assistant
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing at BINTO, a supplement brand that offers 1:1 access to licensed women’s health providers that support women through fertility, pregnancy, postpartum and perimenopause. My essential question was: “What role does a physician assistant play in a surgical setting?” During my time at BINTO, I shadowed a physician assistant and spoke to a registered nurse about their clinical experiences and their jobs as co-founders of this company. I had the opportunity to observe the numerous sides of patient care, executive management, and the aspects of a female-run startup business. I got to see how the two co-founders wear many hats within BINTO. Their days consist of talking to patients and giving medical advice, as well as collapsing boxes and packaging orders. Along with helping complete these tasks, I got to sit in on consultations with customers and hear their questions about the numerous supplements and vitamins BINTO has to offer. I got to see the different kinds of women BINTO supports in the different stages of their lives and see how the products can enhance their quality of life. I learned about the science and research that goes into the development and sourcing of ingredients of the supplements. These naturally-occurring substances (vitamins, minerals, bacteria, antioxidants) help humans meet their daily nutrient needs and play hundreds of roles in the body. Additionally, I observed the business management side by learning about the ordering and shipping processes, website maintenance, and much more. My experience could not have been more well-rounded as I learned about the numerous options available with a physician assistant degree, all of which contribute to helping people.

Place: Lawall Prosthetics and Orthotics
Area of Interest: Biomedical Engineering
I spent my Capstone experience at various Lawall locations, observing multiple prosthetic and orthotic practitioners. My essential question was: “How do the phases of clinical trials affect the development of new drugs?” I researched one route of biomedical engineering, which is centered around pharmaceuticals, and I was able to shadow the alternative route of prosthetics and orthotics. During my shadowing days, I was able to see various prosthetic and orthotic patients and see the process involved in fitting braces and prosthetics. I was given the opportunity to learn and observe how vari-
ous braces and casts are made in their lab through the measurements and molds taken of the patients. While shadowing practitioners, I was shown the lab where they shape and smooth the braces to fit their patients. Through meeting with prosthetic patients, I was able to understand the process and maintenance involved with prosthetic body parts. During my shadowing, I was able to experience how vital a strong support system and professional support are for a patient. My Capstone experience has confirmed my passion to pursue a career focused around biomedical engineering.

Research Mentor: Mrs. Rose Zarhadnick, RN Shadow Mentor: Mrs. Rose Zarhadnick, RN Place: Physicians Care Surgical Hospital Area of Interest: Nursing
I spent my Capstone experience at Physicians Care Surgical Hospital, shadowing Mrs. Rose Zarhadnick. My essential question was: “What psychological reasoning is behind burnout in nurses and how it affects the well-being of their patients and themselves?” While shadowing Mrs. Zarhadnick, I got to see the interaction between the patients and the nurses and doctors, and how the medical staff interacts with one another, especially during long, twelve-hour shifts. During my shadowing hours, I got to watch the patients come out of the operating room and get treated in post operative (post-op) care. The patients I saw were having a hip transplant, knee transplant, or an ankle/foot fracture and break. Before the patient arrived, we reviewed their files and the procedure they received. Next, the operating room nurses reviewed the overall report and medication allergies. From there, I watched Mrs. Zarhadnick check their vitals, ask patients for their pain level, and ask if they still had numbness in the area where surgery was needed. She recorded it in the computer system and gave the patient doses of medication based on their pain level, if needed. I also got to watch a spinal tap, two nerve blocks, and a shoulder surgery. During my experience, I was able to watch the resilience of the nurses, as they had more than one patient - inpatient or outpatient - and work rigorously to make sure the patients were comfortable. Throughout the shifts, I watched the nursing staff enjoy their time together. Even though the hours are long, they still enjoy their work. This shows mental toughness in the healthcare world because they work together with one another and the doctors to make sure patients are provided with what they need. The nurses also work together with the nurse practitioners (NPs) and physical therapists (PTs) who come in to help with medication, prescriptions, or learning to walk with a walker or crutches. The strategic care the nurses give to the patients post surgery can take a toll on them, yet they continue to give each of their patients all of their attention and make sure each one is comfortable and getting the best care possible.

Place: Green Meadows Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Area of Interest: Dietitian
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Ms. Tina Wisely, a dietitian who specializes in geriatric nutrition, at Green Meadows Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. My essential question was: “What role do nutritionists play in supporting long-term recovery and relapse prevention for those with eating disorders?” Throughout my shadowing experience, I gained a well-rounded understanding of the dietitian’s role in patient care. Each day, I would sit in on clinical meetings, review patient assessments and reasoning for admission, and help with the meal-ticketing management as well as the menu planning for the upcoming week. On the first day, I was given a facility tour, where I was informed on how new clients are evaluated and placed on different floors based on their needs. I directly saw how there is personalized assistance provided for each of their residents, whether it was as simple as helping them select their meals for the next week or being educated by the speech therapist to better understand the nutritional requirements for the patient if they have throat or swallowing disorders. One highlight of the week was participating in dementia training. We completed tasks while wearing gloves, headphones, and vision-altering glasses to simulate the condition. It was such an eye-opening experience to learn what it is like to be in the shoes of a person who is living with dementia. I also had the privilege of sitting in care conferences, where medical staff and attorneys talked about the residents’ overall well-being and discussed any concerns. The clinical aspect of nutrition was further highlighted by witnessing the actual use of feeding tubes and learning how they work. This handson learning experience reaffirmed my passion for nutrition and I am so grateful to have had this experience.

Shadowing Mentors: Mr. Alexander Harrison, PA, Ms. Alaina Noronha, PA, and Mr. Gregory Scullin, PA
Place: Chester County Hospital
Area of Interest: Physician Assistant
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing three different physician assistants (PAs) over the course of five days. Shadowing three PAs from different hospital floors was especially beneficial, as it exposed me to a variety of patient care approaches and allowed me to observe how each PA handles diverse medical situations. I had the chance to visit many different units, which gave me a good perspective on hospital operations. My essential question was: “How does the growing demand for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and their approach to patient care differ from physicians?” Shadowing in the hospital and exploring multiple floors helped me with my research on this topic. I experienced not only the role of a PA but also the dynamics between physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals working together for patient care. Throughout my shadowing, I observed many patient interactions and had the opportunity to discuss cases with the PA. I watched PAs perform daily check-ups, assessing patients for symptoms related to their conditions. After each visit, the PAs would summarize the patient’s status, allowing me time to research the patient’s medical history and condition. This experience taught me the important role of PAs in patient care and the importance of clear communica-
tion among healthcare teams. PAs consistently collaborate with nurses and physicians in order to discharge a patient and plan the next care steps. Overall, this experience has confirmed my interest in medicine, and I can genuinely see myself pursuing a career in healthcare.

Research Mentor: Ms. Madalyne Epperson
Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Madalyne Epperson Place: University of Pennsylvania Museum Area of Interest: Conservation
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Ms. Madalyne Epperson, a conservationist at the University of Pennsylvania Museum. My essential question was: “What do conservators and archaeological conservators utilize in the preservation of archeological material?”
During the first week of shadowing, I was introduced to a zoo archaeologist and an archeological ceramics expert at the Center of Analysis for Archeological Material (CAAM). They not only showed me their work with animal remains and the analysis of ceramic materials, respectively, but also tasked me with accessioning (labeling) objects so I could learn the numbering process. I was shown the collection of artifacts kept in non-visible storage and the current projects for the new Egyptian galleries that the museum is constructing. I aided in the transportation of sarcophagi and was given the opportunity to speak with the conservators who were preparing the artifacts for display. In addition, I received both object handling and lab safety training, allowing me to enter into the laboratory spaces and receive a deeper understanding of the lab work that is performed. During the second week of my shadowing experience, I helped prepare for triage (emergency conservation) on objects that had been recently damaged due to a flood. Moreover, I was given a replica pot to practice filling (adding material to holes in the object), ensuring the fills were properly adhered, and color matching it to the object so it blended seamlessly. I learned about different object fills, the process of curing them, and the overall goal of conservation. Additionally, I aided in condition checking a small Egyptian figurine called a ‘shabti’ and filled out a condition report to aid in future conservation efforts. Finally, I learned how to properly photograph artifacts - before and after conservation treatments - for online cataloguing. During my Capstone experience, I not only answered my essential question and performed the practices myself (the use of fills on artifacts, color matching the fills, and utilizing animal glues and adhesives), but also learned generally about conservation and all of its different subfields.

Research Mentor: Mrs. Carolyn Corr
Shadowing Mentor: Mrs. Carolyn Corr
Place: Duffy Real Estate
Area of Interest: Real Estate
I spent my Capstone experience at Duffy Real Estate with Mrs. Carolyn Corr, Realtor. I spent my time learning the ropes of the real estate business, which was so much more work than I ever would have thought. Going into the experience, I assumed that real estate agents just looked at pretty houses and made a lot of money. While these are perks of the job, I had no idea how much more went into the career. During my shadowing days, I learned about conveyancing and agreements of sale. I attended media training and listened to presentations. I learned how to use the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). I also learned about the importance of settlement sheets and client calls, and so much more. I had the most amazing experience with Mrs. Corr; she truly was the best mentor I could ask for. I feel I am walking away with so much knowledge about the real estate business and am very grateful to her for that. My essential question involved looking at how architecture and interior design affects the sales of different homes. I learned firsthand how this works and these aspects are, in fact, very prevalent in the way people buy property. Not only did I get my essential question answered, I made great connections with everybody at the company. My favorite part was learning how to price houses based on the value and how that can change, depending on the school district and neighborhood. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience, and have nothing but good things to say about my experience.

Shadow Mentor: Ms. Kathleen Brown
Place: Saint Norbert Elementary School Area of Interest: Education
For my Capstone shadowing project, I spent time at Saint Norbert Elementary School and shadowed Ms. Kathleen Brown, a science teacher. My essential question was: “How do schools advocate for the mental health of students?” While I was there, I got to observe
Mrs. Brown’s classes and see how she interacts with students, not just with schoolwork but also in ways that support their well-being. It was interesting to see how teachers play a role in helping students feel comfortable and supported just through everyday classroom life. I got to talk to many teachers, and one said to me, “It’s also important to focus on the mental health of teachers, as sometimes tough kids can lead to tough days, but the important thing is being able to help them.” I also spent time in the school’s resource room, which is a new space they have set up for students who might need extra support with mental health. It is a quiet, calm place where students can go if they are feeling overwhelmed or just need a break. The teacher, Ms. Mary Devereaux, helps students talk through what is bothering them and help them find ways to cope. I thought it was interesting that the school is making mental health a priority and giving students a space where they can recharge and feel heard. It showed me that schools can do a lot to help students not just learn, but feel good while doing it. During this shadowing experience I was able to spend much time in the classroom, but also learned ways to help children outside of the classroom.

Research Mentor: Mrs. Stephanie Duffy
Shadow Mentor: Mr. Robert C. F. Willson
Place: Wisler Pearlstine
Area of Interest: Corporate Law
During my Capstone research experience, I had the opportunity to shadow Mr. Bob Willson, a corporate attorney and partner at Wisler Pearlstine. This experience provided insight for my essential research question: “What are the responsibilities of a corporate lawyer?” I researched with Mrs. Stephanie Duffy, a lawyer for Aclaris Therapeutics, and I shadowed and talked with Mr. Willson as he advised clients and navigated through complex issues. Mr. Willson has many clients, each with his/her own legal needs. He explained the roles in different business structures, such as corporations, limited liability companies (LLCs), and nonprofit organizations. I learned how each entity operates under specific structures and how a lawyer would advise them based on state laws and minimizing liability. I was able to see the relationship between a lawyer and a client in viewing corporate records and learning about engagement letters, where the law firm addresses its specific legal role for the client, as well as guidelines for billing. I learned about situations in which the client and lawyer cannot move forward. In comparison, Mrs. Duffy explained her role working for Aclaris, in which her central focus involves human resources in the company. This includes the employee handbook and managing the employee rights in compliance with the updated and various state laws, which not only protect the company, but also the employee. Both experiences were extremely valuable as I understood the broad scope of a corporate lawyer’s responsibilities. I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn from professional, hardworking people throughout my Capstone experience, and I am eager to continue and learn more about corporate law!

Place: Green Meadows Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
Area of Interest: Nutrition and Dietetics
For my Capstone experience, I was immersed in my shadowing mentor’s day-to-day duties as a Dietician at Green Meadows Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where I spent the duration of my shadowing experience. My essential question was: “How does the food people eat impact their lives regarding eating habits/disorders, and functionality?” A part of this experience helped me answer that question from a longitudinal perspective. When working with residents who were of an older age, common themes were recognized that helped us
configure specific diets to meet the needs of the residents. At Green Meadows, we did a myriad of engaging activities. One of my favorite daily activities was going to the clinical meetings. Each day, department heads at the facility would come together to discuss any concerns, conditions, or questions with incoming or long staying residents. These meetings would help us curate the day’s schedule when considering who we would see and what floors we would focus on the most each day. When we saw patients, we asked them about any dietary restrictions, allergies and food preferences. In addition, we would remind them about their special diets, like puree or mechanized, and sometimes suggest specific diets like the Mediterranean diet. Sometimes we would go into the kitchen to help prepare foods or meet with kitchen staff to discuss meal changes. One of the most amazing parts of the entire experience was working with the residents. Two of my favorite people to see each day were named Bruce and Genie. Overall, the experience was exciting and offered so much to think about when considering my future career and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity.

Research Mentor: Dr. Daphne Florence Shadowing Mentor: Dr. Daphne Florence Place: Physicians Care Surgical Hospital Area of Interest: Anesthesia
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Dr. Daphne Florence, an anesthesiologist at Physicians Care Surgical Hospital. My essential question was: “Why are certain types of anesthesia necessary for different surgeries?” Spending time with Dr. Florence and her co-workers gave me a much deeper understanding of how anesthesia is tailored to the needs of each patient and procedure. Observing pre-operational procedures was especially interesting, as I witnessed how anesthesiologists evaluate a patient’s medical history, allergies, and other specific surgical requirements before selecting the appropriate type and dosage of anesthesia. Throughout my experience, I had the opportunity to observe a variety of surgeries, including a total hip replacement and a nasal septoplasty. Each procedure demonstrated a unique application of anesthesia. For the hip replacement, a combination of spinal anesthesia and sedation was used to manage the pain while still minimizing the risks of anesthesia, especially for an older patient. In contrast, the nose surgery only involved using general anesthesia to ensure complete unconsciousness and immobility due to the delicate nature of the procedure. Watching these surgeries helped me see how anesthesiologists have to carefully weigh factors like patient comfort, safety, and surgical access when choosing an anesthetic plan.

Place: APEX Field Hockey
Area of Interest: Women in Sports
For my Capstone project, I worked with Apex Field Hockey, an organization that hosts showcases, tournaments, and clinics for young athletes and college coaches. During my time with Apex, I assisted in running two major events: a college showcase and a tournament. On the showcase day, I helped set up tables and tents, checked in players, and distributed pinnies, ensuring everything ran smoothly as athletes arrived and prepared for the day. On the tournament day, I took on the role of a field manager, where I recorded game scores, collected signatures from referees and coaches, ensured games started on time, and submitted results for pool winner determinations. I also supported setup and cleanup efforts, helping the staff maintain order and efficiency throughout the event. My essential question for this Capstone was: “What are the challenges faced by women in leadership positions in sports organizations?” Working with Apex gave me the chance to observe strong female leadership in action. The company is women-owned and operated, and I saw firsthand how much responsibility and pressure these women handled—overseeing logistics, directing staff, solving unexpected issues, and communicating with coaches, referees, athletes, and families. It became clear that women in sports leadership often face high expectations and must constantly prove their capabilities in a
male-dominated industry. Despite those challenges, the leaders at Apex demonstrated professionalism, confidence, and effectiveness throughout both events. This experience gave me a better understanding of the behind-the-scenes work that makes youth sports events successful, and it deepened my appreciation for the determination and resilience of women in leadership roles. It also allowed me to strengthen my own communication, organization, and teamwork skills in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Emily Everlof Place: CTDI Inc.
Area of Interest: Mechanical Engineering
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Ms. Emily Everlof, a mechanical engineer at CTDI Inc. in West Chester, PA. My essential question throughout this process was: “How has 3D printing transformed the design and manufacturing processes?” During the duration of my four days at CTDI, I was introduced to the many inner workings of the engineering aspects of the communications company. On the first day, I was shown the different manufacturing locations with many 3D printers and metal processing machines as well as the software used to design projects, called SolidWorks. I was given a small assignment - to design an assembly project through SolidWorks that would be 3D printed using Bambu Lab. This showed me how the manufacturing timeline was directly increased through the use
of 3D printing. I also learned how to “tap” the 3D printed object and the importance of this step in the stability of the structure. Furthermore, I was able to meet with a software engineer, Mr. Tim Hopfer, to work on a C# programming project using Microsoft’s Visual Studios, creating an alphabetical sorter for country names. On my last day, I was given a tour of CTDI’s operations with their engineering manager, Mr. Chris Mandeen, interacting with other engineers and overseeing real company problems and how an engineer would think to discover the root of the problem. I was also given the opportunity to use Arduino programming to make a small Arduino Uno motor project. Overall, my experience at CTDI was extremely valuable. I was able to experience the real-world applications of mechanical engineering, problem solving, and 3D printing. I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Ms. Lydia Szyjka, along with the rest of the marketing and communications team at Immaculata University. My essential question was: “What type of content is most impactful in marketing?” I was able to answer this question through shadowing a different member of the team every day. The specialized roles included director of communications, digital and social media specialist, web and digital experience manager, creative director, communications specialist, and the vice president of the department. Each staff member explained the responsibilities of his/her job, which allowed me to understand various aspects of marketing and communications, and I got to complete an assignment based on the specialization. Some assignments included: building my LinkedIn profile, reviewing Immaculata’s websites and handouts, creating a social media calendar, and creating captions for different social media posts on various platforms. On Mondays, I was able to sit in on the weekly staff meetings to see how they work as a team. Being able to shadow different specialties was extremely beneficial to me because it led me to discover what area of marketing I would like to pursue in the future. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to shadow Ms. Szyjka and the rest of the team at Immaculata.

Place: Chester County Justice Center Area of Interest: Criminal Law
I completed my Capstone experience at the Public Defender office in the Chester County Justice Center. My essential question was: “What are the differences
and similarities between military and civilian law?” I discovered the answer through talking with various attorneys as well as observing various cases and identifying possible areas of difference. During my week of shadowing, I spent the bulk of my time sitting in on court proceedings and observing a trial. I watched various legal procedures like plea deals, sentencing, and bail hearings. These procedures addressed a wide variety of crimes like DUIs, domestic violence, assault, PFA violations, strangulations, and more. I also had the opportunity to go to the prison and shadow the PD investigators as they interviewed the newly arrested. This experience offered insight into the key principles of law and particularly criminal law in America. For example, the public defender’s office strives to offer fair representation, no matter the offender’s status or crime. This guaranteed representation allows for all people to be defended, no matter their financial situation. This experience has taught me how the principles of our country are applied legally and practically. As a result of this experience, I now have a much greater understanding of the judicial branch of our government.

Research Mentor: Ms. Christine Diorio Shadowing Mentors: Ms. Christine Diorio, Mr. Jordan Craney, and Dr. Scott Hinkle Place: Alcon Laboratories United States Corporate Headquarters, Fort Worth, TX Area of Interest: Pharmaceutical Sales
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing three mentors: Ms. Christine Diorio, Mr. Jordan Craney, and Dr. Scott Hinkle. They are medical device and pharmaceutical sales representatives for Alcon Vision Care. My essential research question was: “How have trends in pharmaceutical sales within the eye care industry evolved in response to advancements in treatment options and market demands?” Shadowing with my mentors helped me discover answers to my essential question. Through the company’s new hire Vision Care training, I was able to hear specifically about Alcon’s innovations revolving around new technology, driving revenue growth, and the impact of digital devices. For example, the sales representatives are able to utilize the app Pitcher, a sales database feature on their iPads, to present Alcon’s treatment options to doctors. The treatment options Alcon offers are: Dailies Total 1, Precision 1, Precision 7, and Total 30. Alcon has responded to market demands and transformed their contact lenses to have options for all patients within a practice. I was able to participate in engaging activities during the new hire training on how to present each of these new treatment options. We learned about the market demands as well as what offices in the eye care industry look for in a product: performance, image, and cost. From my
shadowing experience, I learned that building relationships with patients and presenting treatment options that align with the views of the practice is very important in having a successful sale. Throughout my research and shadowing, I have gained new insight about pharmaceutical sales and the new treatment options in response to market demand – specifically, what Alcon has to offer. Ultimately, my experience could not have been any better. By shadowing at the United States corporate office, I was able to see the organization behind being a part of such a large company. I also saw the relationships workers formed in the office. I truly felt a part of the company during my time shadowing and have built connections at Alcon Vision Care to assist me with my career in the future.

Place: Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Area of Interest: Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement
I spent my Capstone experience at the Philadelphia branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to explore my essential question: “What are the responsibilities of the ATF and how does the bureau affect public safety in the United States?” I was able to talk to many different professionals about their roles in the ATF and what they do on a day-to-day basis. I also got to watch the special agent in charge of the ATF be interviewed by CBS News for a special report on machine gun conversion devices. On my final day of shadowing, I was able to watch a team of agents complete their tactical training. I was also shown the NIBIN (National Integrated Ballistic Information Network) technology that the ATF uses. This technology scans the marks left on cartridge casings at crime scenes and takes high quality digital images of them. It then compares these images with others stored in a database and searches for a match. This can allow agents to find leads for crimes. Overall, this experience was extremely eye-opening and allowed me to learn about all of the many different positions at the ATF and all the work they do to make Philadelphia safe.

Place: Innovative Solutions & Support Area of Interest: Aerospace Engineering
I spent my Capstone experience at Innovative Solutions and Support (IS&S) shadowing Ms. Olivia Hall, a systems engineer for her company. Shadowing under Ms. Hall gave me insight into many different positions of engineering. She had me observe different types of engineers to get a better understanding and grasp of the work done by Ms. Hall and her team. Throughout the week I met with many people and learned many things. `I got to learn a bit about coding language embedded C. My essential question was: “How does design connect with functionality?” I got to shadow a mechanical engineer, where I learned how to use a CAD program. This broadened my understanding of the use of digital tools for innovation. I got to digitally create a part that is to be tested as a screen for an aviation system. I learned how to 3D print correctly and use the different workshop machines, such as laser cutters. Ms. Hall taught me the importance of unit testing to make sure the design meets the functionality requirements. For much of my shadowing time, I was learning about a project called AROCDU, which is installed in Boeing tankers for automated refueling. I learned just how many requirements and specifications are needed for just one flight component - so much testing and filing goes into one part. I learned about the digital filing and sorting of the AROCDU’s specifications as Ms. Hall taught me how to code in a language specific to Microsoft Excel called VBA. She even let me help write some code myself. It was extremely interesting to learn one can code a project to just sort the thousands of files used to house all the information on a part. During my time here, I was eager to learn something different each day. I was surprised by just how much I was being taught in such a short time. I am extremely grateful for such an opportunity and to strengthen my passion for my dream of becoming an engineer.

Place: Salon Samar Area of Interest: Business/Cosmetology
I spent my Capstone experience at Salon Samar, a local business owned and operated by Mrs. Katie Samar in West Chester, Pennsylvania. There, I observed the ins and outs of both the cosmetology and business sides of the salon. My essential research question was: “How has the beauty industry evolved in response to changing cultural and social trends?” While shadowing, I noticed how Salon Samar’s services meet the different needs of its clients while staying on top of current trends. Over the course of two weeks, I shadowed Mrs. Samar in different roles, such as client consultations and product selection. I also observed her scheduling appointments and handling inventory management. I also saw how the salon uses social media and marketing strategies to attract customers in a market that is very competitive. During my hours there, I learned about various beauty treatments and how stylists customize services based on the clients’ needs and preferences. I also observed how Mrs. Samar managed the business side, ensuring her salon maintained a welcoming and professional environment. This experience taught me that the beauty field is as much about human connection and creativity as it is about technical skill. I admired the professionalism and passion that Mrs. Samar demonstrated. My future goal is to pursue a career that blends business strategy with creativity, similar to what I was fortunate enough to be able to experience at Salon Samar with Mrs. Samar.

Place: Penn Medicine
Area of Interest: Labor Delivery & Mother-Baby
I spent my Capstone experience at Penn Medicine, where I had the opportunity to shadow multiple professionals across both the Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby units. This wonderful experience allowed me to explore the critical question: “How does a labor and delivery nurse impact the mother, not just the baby?” Through daily observation and interaction, I witnessed firsthand how these nurses play a vital role in shaping a mother’s birthing experience. It became clear that their influence extends far beyond clinical care. They are emotional anchors, advocates, and sources of comfort during one of the most intense and vulnerable moments in a woman’s life. By observing their compassionate bedside manner, I saw how nurses establish deep, trusting bonds with their patients. Whether offering words of encouragement during labor, calming fears during unexpected complications, or simply providing a listening ear postpartum, these nurses significantly contribute to a mother’s sense of safety, empowerment, and emotional well-being. This experience deepened my understanding of nursing care and reinforced the missing importance of empathy, communication, and presence in maternal health.

For my Capstone research experience, I shadowed at Rosemont Pharmacy in Bryn Mawr under Mrs. Maria Yacovelli. I observed the behind-the-scenes work of a community pharmacy, watching how the prescribed drugs are processed by the pharmacist and ensuring their safety to be given to the patient. I also learned about specialized fertility drugs that are commonly administered in Rosemont Pharmacy, as well as many different common drug names used to treat certain diseases or infections found in patients. My essential question for my Capstone experience was: “What is the difference between the treatment of illnesses in pediatric pharmacy compared to regular pharmacy in adults?” I found that particular dosage and strength of treatment can be very particular in children compared to adults, making the field of pediatrics more appealing to me to ensure children are given proper care and consideration for the prescriptions they are given. This experience helped grow my confidence in the field of pharmacy and give me an understanding of how pharmacists function to
keep community members healthy. The staff members and pharmacists at Rosemont Pharmacy made this experience memorable and represent the true qualities needed as a healthcare professional.

Place: De Lage Landen Financial Services, Inc. Area of Interest: Sales Executive, Commercial Finance
For my Capstone shadowing experience, I went to DLL Group in Wayne, PA. My essential question was: “How are gender roles present in sales?” At DLL, I got a close-up view of how sales works, especially financial sales. The two-week shadow experience really helped me develop my understanding of sales and how I will apply this knowledge to my future life - especially as a business major in college. I really understood teamwork and how well team members are able to connect to get more efficient work done. I observed the processing of a credit application, including determining who on the team would be the best person to handle that application. I participated in various phone calls that coincided with credit applications. Within those, the “new dealer” was a hard process for people on the team. This is because when the dealer starts a company, he is not always reliable; he may send over a credit application, but the place where he sends the credit application may not know how soon he will give back the money to DLL. I also worked with the marketing team to see what they project to gain more business. They showed me their LinkedIn account and the blogs that they post on that platform to grow interest in their company and products. It was very interesting to see the best way they present the company, and I feel this company does a great job. When I was listening in on a call about a credit application, I noticed that customer explained how he liked certain pictures and descriptions that were on the website. This is important feedback for the marketing team because it shows that their website was easy for people to understand. I did notice one specific time when a credit application came in and was taken by a member of the team who was not supposed to handle it. The colleague was being very difficult to deal with because he took someone else’s application. I have learned many things during my shadow experience, and I am beyond grateful for this. One major objective I learned is the concept of teamwork. That is considered very important in the company and especially in the executive sales and marketing teams. I also learned that not everything is going to go perfectly as planned and there are always some obstacles one will face at work. It is important to overcome these challenges without giving up. At DLL, I noticed that no one ever gave up – whether it took them ten minutes or five hours to complete a task.

Shadowing Mentor: Mrs. Ryan Hammond
Place: NovaCare Complex
Area of Interest: Nonprofit Organizations
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Mrs. Ryan Hammond, Executive Director of Eagles Autism Foundation (EAF), at the NovaCare Complex. My essential question was: “What role do sports teams play in community development?” Throughout my experience with Mrs. Hammond and her team of nine women, all contributors in different roles at EAF, I was able to not only answer my question, but I was able to see the impact that a dedicated team can have on the community. During my experience, I spent time with each of the team members, learning their roles and responsibilities. I helped with a variety of tasks, such as organizing and folding merchandise, registering people, adding donations, and more, to help prepare for their biggest event of the year, the Eagles Autism Challenge (EAC). The EAC is an annual, one-day event where 100% of participant-raised funds go towards institutions for autism research and care. In preparation for this event, many volunteers, including staff for the Eagles, donors, community members, and game day staff, came together to pack the bags that will be handed out at EAC. The two days spent packing bags were two of my favorite days because I was able to see so many people come together for a cause and understand how much EAF means to the community. Afterwards, the EAF team and I unpacked medals with the game day staff. In those few hours spent with the game day staff, I felt so happy and learned so much from them. During the entire time, they were so energetic and were willing to help – no matter what. One of the game day staff mentioned how we can only control our actions and not what happens after, so we have to just try our best. That stuck with me. My Capstone experience was so amazing, and I am so grateful that I was given the opportunity to shadow this team. The team is so dedicated to their work and it is so inspiring to see what they do in action. My experience was beyond what I imagined and am so thankful for the memories and relationships that I built.

Research Mentor: Miss Gina Lizzo
Shadow Mentor: Miss Gina Lizzo
Place: Various locations for Main Line Today and The Hunt Magazine Area of Interest: Editing and Publishing
For my Capstone experience I shadowed Miss Gina Lizzo with The Hunt Magazine and Main Line Today. This experience allowed me to learn at various locations and connect with the community through many different events. My research was based around my essential
question: “How does the editorial process engage and work to adhere to the demands of the public?” Through a photoshoot at Yards at Malvern, a fashion event for local businesses, interviews at Downingtown West High School and Baker Industries in Malvern, a Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lobbying Association (PRLA) panel event at Carina Sorella in Bryn Mawr, and more, I was able to learn the importance of the voices within our community. It is through connections, advocacy, hard work, and passion that stories can be shared and become a network for growth and positive collectivism. I learned that crafting stories takes care and consideration, but also a personal connection. It is through the value of devotion - to communities, traditions, lifestyles, etc.- that writing and reporting can both inform and entertain its viewers. Connecting personally with the community is a prime example of how editors can engage and adhere to the demands of the public. For example, an interview I witnessed at Baker Industries allowed me to learn firsthand the great work this non-profit does for those in our community who are struggling to obtain work, such as those recently incarcerated or disabled, or individuals facing particular barriers to employment. On the other hand, the interview I shadowed at Downingtown West High School showed me the importance of teamwork and work ethic through the voice of the football team’s head coach. Outside of deadlines and structure, I found that harnessing creativity is the most crucial aspect of writing. Creativity can be built in conversation, collaboration, and personal artistic viewpoints. To relate once again to my question, I learned most of all that editing and reporting involves more than rearranging words and modifying grammatical issues. It is about supporting everyone’s individual voices and working to showcase the diversity present in all aspects of our society.

I spent my Capstone experience shadowing small business owner, Ms. Ashley Meyers, a fashion stylist at Main Line Fashionista Boutique in Paoli. My essential question was: “What makes a business successful?” Through shadowing Ms. Meyers, I learned that a successful business in the retail industry involves personability, sustained energy, some sort of media presence, analyzing price-points, and strong merchandising. I was able to spend hours in the store with Ms. Meyers and see how she works with customers to help them leave the store feeling as if they have found the perfect clothing for them. Ms. Meyers showed me the behind-the-scenes of her social media account and how precise and exact everything has to be placed in her photos and posts. She
explained the importance of the consistency and timing of her posts to keep her followers engaged. She showed me her store’s analytics and how she chooses her price points for her items and how she knows which items sell best in her store. Lastly, she allowed me to help her style models for a photo shoot of her store’s jewelry. This experience opened the door to many small parts of business ownership that I did not understand before or even know existed. I also was able to see the personality and lifestyle that goes into being a business owner. I am extremely grateful to have experienced a business upclose in such an in-depth way.

For Capstone, I spent my shadowing experience at Wharton Business Group and met with different corporate advisors who work in this field. My essential research question was: “How do brand narratives in advertising influence consumer loyalty?” Through my experience, I gained valuable insight on how to communicate with clients, as well as how to analyze beneficial plans efficiently. I learned the importance of connecting with clients by watching clientele meetings with my shadowing mentors on Zoom and observing how they planned their documents. The biggest thing I learned was how important it is to have connections. I noticed that my mentor exemplified that having mutual connections with a prospective client will help to build trust in their business and relationship. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I am glad I got to spend my shadowing experience here. This field of study fascinated me and it was amazing to meet all the people who work with my mentor.

Shadow Mentor: Ms. Carrie Wightman
Place: QVC/Carrie Fitness Studio
Area of Interest: Marketing
For my Capstone experience, I spent the two weeks shadowing Ms. Carrie Wightman, learning how she markets products for QVC while marketing herself and her fitness studio. I learned the importance of captivating the viewer when it comes to trying to sell a product or a brand. I learned how to stimulate interest in the viewers through social media posts that try to attract their attention. All of my research and learning was based around my essential question: “What are the positive and negative effects PR/communications can have on a sports team/franchise?” Though I did my research on sports sales, a lot of it still applied to product/brand sales as well. I learned that a positive effect of marketing through social media is that the message can reach hundreds of people, everywhere, and they can view the product you are trying to sell. The hard part is designing the post for the product to keep viewers interested. Similar to the research I did in the winter, a baseball team could not play because of Covid, and therefore was losing fan interest. So, they made the next season more fan interactive, so more fans would be involved. Similarly, Ms. Carrie Wightman is going away for two weeks but still needs to keep her fitness studio customers involved. She gave me the creative freedom to create a virtual BINGO game for the viewers, so each day for two weeks, they will receive a different, fun workout to keep them involved. Through trial and error in figuring out color schemes and interesting designs, I created a game that would be most exciting to the audience. My experience with Ms. Wightman taught me so much about the world of marketing and sparked a future interest for myself.

Place: Harmelin Media Area of Interest: Marketing
Within my time spent at Harmelin Media, I grasped an understanding of how businesses predict the consumers’ purchases, what they prefer, and how they are influenced. I was able to see how Harmelin uses this comprehension of the consumer to offer effective advertisements to clients. On top of that, I observed valuable insights on the inner workings of companies. Each company, like Harmelin, works with a network of other businesses. Harmelin communicates with their clients to set goals. Then, the Harmelin team reaches out to their client’s creative team for ads, posters, or any other visual. The process continues as the individuals at Harmelin have to set up the creative with the indicated billboard, YouTube ad slot, newspaper, etc. This cycle is
ongoing with each client, which taught me the importance of communication. There are a variety of details being constantly exchanged between each step of the process. I have witnessed day-of changes being carried out seamlessly because of their ability to manage communication so well. Additionally, I noticed the uniqueness of advertising. What made it so special was its continuous team effort on each project. I attended multiple team meetings and client calls that showcased the value of the Harmelin community. The team structure of the company leads to daily triumphs. Because of the strong Harmelin team, I had the opportunity to connect to coworkers beyond the two I was assigned to shadow. Experiencing Harmelin’s daily collaboration and flow of business was a key into my future career because I got to validate how much I love working with a team and thinking creatively.

Place: Main Line Hospital in Paoli
Area of Interest: Forensic Nursing/Emergency Department Nurse
During my time shadowing at Main Line Hospital in Paoli, I gained valuable insight into how forensic nurses collaborate with law enforcement and legal professionals in the investigation and documentation of crimes. This collaboration is deeply rooted in clear communication, legal protocols, and evidence preservation. I learned about the hospital’s procedures for coordinating with law enforcement, including the specific steps taken to ensure that all evidence is collected and documented according to legal standards. This includes the use of designated forensic kits and secured units where DNA evidence is stored, all while following strict rules regarding the viability and chain of custody of the materials. I particularly enjoyed observing how forensic nurses interacted with patients. Their ability to balance empathy with professionalism stood out to me; their sympathetic yet firm approach often helped patients feel more empowered and confident in their decisions to report crimes. Witnessing this collaboration in action showed me how essential forensic nurses are—not only as medical professionals but also as advocates and key partners in the pursuit of justice.

Place: Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital
Area of Interest: Neuroscience Research
For my Capstone experience, I had the opportunity to shadow many different types of therapists, doctors, case managers, and other healthcare professionals at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital. My essential question was: “How do different treatments help patients recover from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)?” I sat in on several physical, occupational, and speech therapy appointments, where patients with TBIs of varying levels of severity were able to work on and strengthen crucial skills that they will need once discharged. I also shadowed physicians who were doing their rounds on Maple, the neurology floor of the hospital, and was able to see and talk with patients during their stay. I spent time in the pharmacy, which provides medication for all floors and all different types of patients at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital. I was also able to shadow in the admissions and case management departments, where I saw the process of discharging patients and communicating with family members about the needs of a patient once discharged, as well as the qualifications that a patient must meet to be admitted. Overall, my time at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital was incredibly informative, and I learned so much about the rehabilitation process for patients with traumatic brain injuries. It was incredible to see the progress that a patient can make from the time of the injury through their time at Bryn Mawr Rehab. My time here solidified my passion in neuroscience research, especially centered around patients with TBI.

Place: SALT Performing Arts
Area of Interest: Marketing, Performing Arts
During my Capstone experience, I sought to answer the following question: “How does marketing influence artistic production?” I was lucky to be able to shadow Ms. Lauren McComas, the owner of SALT Performing Arts. I learned about how different marketing strategies influence ticket sales. Additionally I was able to speak to my mentor about how marketing strategies differ depending on the level of production value. Most of my research involved analyzing the power that social media had in SALT’s overall success, but my mentor also enlightened me on the many other strategies that have been key in the theatre’s success. Additionally, I was able to sit in on rehearsals for the company’s upcoming production of Sweeney Todd. It was exciting to watch as all of the pieces of the show began to tie together. With the show soon approaching, I was also able to help work on
the set. Sweeney Todd has a very complex set, which I found interesting, and it was beneficial to gain more experience on the production side of performing arts! My Capstone experience was well-rounded, and I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to learn about theatre production through many different angles such as marketing, costuming, set design and performance!

Place: Immaculata University
Area of Interest: Marketing
For my senior shadowing experience, I had the opportunity to work with Immaculata University’s Communications and Marketing Department with a fellow Villa student. Each day, I shadowed a different professional in roles such as social media coordinator, web designer, graphic designer, and communications leadership. We had professional headshots taken, learned about content creation strategies, and were given tasks with building a content calendar and making TikToks that promoted campus life and school spirit. With the web and graphic design team, I was assigned to evaluate several university websites using a detailed evaluation sheet to show me the importance of thoughtful layout. I also learned from the Director and Vice President of Communications, who led several in-depth PowerPoint sessions about how marketing shapes a community’s identity. During the week, I also made a LinkedIn account to build my professional profile and studied the 4 P’s of marketing: product, price, place, and promotion. I had such an amazing time with the Immaculata team and I am so grateful for the opportunity and all the knowledge I gained from this experience.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Carrie Wightman
Place: QVC Studio
Area of Interest: Television Personality
For my Capstone experience, I went to the QVC Studio for a 24-hour TSV (Today’s Special Value). I shadowed Ms. Carrie Wightman. She is a vendor rep for the product Audien, which is a type of hearing aid. She is also the on-air fitness host for QVC. Audien was having their first TSV, which is amazing because they have only been at QVC since August. Since Ms. Wightman is the vendor representative, she has to be there at all times helping the creators of Audien and making sure they are getting everything set up correctly with all the specific information. I thought it was really interesting seeing how, before each show, even if it is 10, 30, 40, or 60
minutes, the host communicates with the on-air talent and the vendor representative regarding how they are going to set up the show. Then, the host goes to the production team and communicates to them the plan to show specific pictures, videos, testimonials, and so much more. The main goal of each show is to see how much product is sold within a matter of minutes. So each host and on-air talent need to repeat themselves 2-3 times to really draw in the audience. This experience was so amazing, especially since I was able to do it with Ms. Wightman, who is my mom. My major in college will be journalism and broadcasting. Even though my goal is to go into news and sports broadcasting, I still need to learn everything behind the scenes as well before I narrow it down to one specific area. Being at QVC during the Audien TSV has made me more confident going into my major.

Place: Ingram Engineering Services
Are of Interest: Civil Engineering
For my Capstone experience, I had the incredible opportunity to shadow Mr. Michael MacCall, P.E., a geotechnical engineering project manager at Ingram Engineering Services. Throughout the shadowing experience, I was able to immerse myself in various aspects of civil engineering, including both structural and geotechnical areas. Specifically, I attended an inspection for a homeowner’ foundation - wooden trusses in a developed business park - and was then able to work alongside Mr. MacCall to write the reports and submit the documents to the appropriate sources. The research question that I chose to guide my Capstone experience was: “What role does geotechnical engineering play in the safety of communities?” I firmly believe that my shadowing placement and experiences fulfilled and enhanced this guiding question. Ultimately, the chance to be a participating member of the community inspections and the paperwork cemented my passion and desire to pursue a civil engineering degree in college.

Place: Fox Chase Cancer Center
Area of Interest: Microsurgical Reconstruction
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Dr. Adam Walchak, a surgeon who specializes in microsurgical reconstruction, at Fox Chase Cancer Center. I got the opportunity to observe several cases with an array of surgical procedures as well as a lab at the Temple
University Lewis Katz School of Medicine. My essential question was: “How have practices involved in reconstructive surgery changed over the years and why?” Observing how Dr. Walchak navigated through this process before, during, and after the procedure allowed me to gain insight into this question. Dr. Walchak has not only an intimate knowledge of soft tissue, but also knows exactly how a given procedure will affect soft tissue. The healing process is not linear, and the outcomes can yield unexpected complications, but my experience showed me that having a firm grasp on how a given procedure has aged lends itself to pinpointing exactly how new innovations can allow for more accuracy in the healing process. History consists of patterns, and observing the history of certain procedures ultimately yields a more comprehensive understanding of their impact on a person.

Shadow Mentors: Lieut. Edward Schikel, Det. Daniel Cha, Mr. Nicholas Fioravanti
Place: Montgomery County Detective Bureau Area of Interest: Criminal Justice: Forensic Investigation
I spent my Capstone experience at the Montgomery County Detective Bureau office shadowing Lieutenant Edward Schikel, Detective Daniel Cha, and National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) Tech Nicholas Fioravanti. I observed different techniques used in their investigative process and analyzed criminal cases and weapons. My essential question was: “How does the FBI use criminalistics in their investigative process?” Over the time I spent shadowing, I was able to solve my question through my engagement during tasks that were given to me. Some tasks I participated in include analyzing different bullets and guns used in crimes, learning gun safety, and watching a test fire of a specific weapon used during a crime to see if the marks of the test bullets matched the ones originally shot and found at the crime scene before the test fire, creating casts, testing a fake fluid sample as if it were a crime to see if the stain was human blood, and did a mock test run of my DNA using a buccal swab and machine used to test DNA of suspected criminals. In the end, identifying how criminalistics are used in the FBI’s investigative process has increased my interest in pursuing Forensic Investigation in college. Having an amazing shadowing experience and seeing how dedicated my mentors are to their field strongly grew my determination to become a forensic investigator in the future. I am truly so grateful that I was able to have this opportunity with the Montgomery County Detective Bureau.

Place: Stillmeadow Equine Veterinary Service
Area of Interest: Animal Medicine
I spent my Capstone experience at Stillmeadow Veterinary Service in Coatesville, PA. I had the opportunity to ride along with two incredible veterinarians over a four-day time period. Stillmeadow is a mobile veterinary practice that travels all over the county to treat horses. In the office, I was taught about how they determine whether or not to take a new client based on their location. I also learned from the two receptionists how their scheduling works and all the planning that goes into it. I observed different horse surgeries and treatment plans. I also learned about horse dental work, which was very intriguing to see. I was able to help with x-rays and tooth extractions, and I was able to help get vitals of a newborn. I also observed multiple ultrasounds, a castration, pulsing of muscles, blood testing, vaccines, neurological exams, and the process of microchipping a horse. My shadowing experience was more on the veterinary side of my research and did not really help me answer my essential question, which was: “What are the effects of ecotourism on shark migratory behaviors?” This question was rather difficult to shadow since we are not close to the sea; however, through my shadowing experience, my mentors were able to tie in a bit of shark information along the way. My shadowing experience overall was very enjoyable. I learned a lot about the different ways of treating horses. I was able to see the growth in recovery over the week with stop-by check ups. I am extremely grateful for this experience and for the time shared by both Dr. Fredrickson and Dr. Crowley. Through this experience, I not only learned a lot but I also met so many new people from all over the county! I greatly appreciate that these clients allowed me to help – along with the doctors – and seemed interested in our school’s program. Although my shadowing experience did not specifically match my Capstone research, I was very intrigued by the information that I learned, as I grew up riding with my grandma. This experience taught me the importance of not being afraid of getting dirty, as in some cases it is the only way to help the animal in need.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Brooke Casey, PA
Place: Dermatology Centers of Nepa Area of Interest: Medicine
I had the opportunity to shadow Ms. Brooke Casey, a physician assistant (PA) specializing in dermatology, at the Dermatology Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania. I observed a variety of procedures and patient interactions and gained a deeper understanding of both the medical side of dermatology and the importance of patient care. My essential question was: “How can a nurse’s bedside manner affect a patient’s healing?” While Ms. Casey is a PA, not a nurse, her interactions with patients and the way she worked with the nursing staff gave me valuable insight into this topic. One moment that stood out was when a nervous young girl came in with molluscum contagiosum. The nurse calmly reassured her and helped ease her fear, allowing the appointment to go more smoothly. This made it clear how a calm, compassionate presence can reduce stress and build trust, which is essential for healing. Ms. Casey also demonstrated an excellent bedside manner. She has long-term relationships with many of her patients, with one patient even bringing in cookies for National Nurses Day. During my Capstone days, I observed a wide range of treatments including laser hair removal, microneedling, Botox, cyst drainage, keloid injections, biopsies, and skin cancer follow-ups. I even got to experience laser treatment firsthand on my own port wine stain, using the same laser typically used for targeting red pigmentation. Although Ms. Casey’s procedures addressed patients’ physical issues, each one also required a person to listen to their concerns, ease fears, and offer reassurance. Seeing how Ms. Casey and the nurses treat their patients showed me that healing is not just about medicine, but also about kindness, comfort, and trust.

Shadowing Mentor: Mr. Michael Chain Place: The Desmond Hotel Area of Interest: Business and Hospitality
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Mr. Michael Chain, the general manager of the Desmond Hotel in Malvern. My essential question was: “How does a positive workplace culture impact employee retention and satisfaction in businesses?” During my shadowing experience, I was able to see various behind-the-scenes aspects of how a hotel runs and operates, including working at the front desk, housekeeping, sales and marketing, and food services. Over the course of this week, I was able to see how the various departments of a hotel work together consistently, and how one cannot run without another’s support. In my week of shadowing,
I saw the different challenges that come with a hospitality business from day to day. There was always some new experience or change to handle, and every member of every department had to be quick on his or her feet and work together to handle the problem to gratify and retain customers. At the front desk, I was able to witness employees handle rude customers with grace, solve problems with computer systems, and multitask situations like phone calls, customers checking in, and paperwork, which all needed to be done at once. At housekeeping and food services, I watched as coworkers communicated with one another to get everything done; managers treated their employees with empathy and grace, and everyone worked through problems together with a smile on their face. Through my experience, I was able to realize the importance of teamwork, communication, and empathy in the hospitality industry, and I left with an admiration for the determination and kindness held by every worker I met. I learned very many valuable lessons about business and management that I will carry into my future career.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Julie Morse
Place: Aronimink Golf Club
Area of Interest: Horticulture, Plant Science, Botany
I spent my Capstone experience at Aronimink Golf Club, shadowing Julie Morse, the garden manager of the course. My essential question was: “How does plant diversity in an ecosystem affect its resilience to environmental stressors?” During my time with Ms. Morse, I saw firsthand how native plants support the health of their environment. Observing the ways in which diverse plantings contribute to the stability and beauty of the landscape helped me understand the practical impact of biodiversity on ecosystem resilience. At Aronimink, I observed the full planning process for a garden, beginning with detailed blueprints and continuing on-site where plant placement was mapped out. Ms. Morse also showed me how she calculates plant quantities and orders them from local nurseries. I assisted with unloading flower shipments and planting them into the designated flower beds, helping transition the beds from spring to summer displays. I also helped remove weeds, prune shrubs, and maintain the overall appearance of several gardens. I used the irrigation system to assess water levels in the landscaped areas and keep the plants hydrated. In addition to daily maintenance, I also learned about the role of compost in improving soil quality and reducing waste. Ms. Morse showed me how organic material, like grass clippings and plant trimmings, is collected from around the course and turned into nutrient-rich soil that is later used to enrich landscaped areas. Overall, this experience deepened my understanding of plant diversity and affirmed my interest in horticulture and plant science.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Alexandra Martin, CRNP
Place: Main Line Bryn Mawr Hospital
Area of Interest: Healthcare & Neuroscience
For my Capstone experience, I had the opportunity to shadow Ms. Alex Martin, CRNP, Nurse Practitioner in Neurology at Main Line Bryn Mawr Hospital. My essential question going into this experience was: “Which academic career path in medicine aligns better with my strengths, values, and long-term goals?” Over the course of the week, I observed more than 25 patients with a wide range of neurological conditions, including dementia, stroke, and meningitis. Ms. Martin worked closely with two neurologists, Dr. Kone and Dr. Gedansky, giving me the chance to witness different approaches to diagnosis, teamwork, and patient care. Each day began at 8:00 a.m. with rounds, where we visited all the patients for the day, until around 1:00 p.m. After a lunch break, Ms. Martin would review patient charts with me, walking me through items like the history of present illness, the chief complaint, and the daily progress notes. One of the most engaging parts of this particular part of the day was learning how to read brain scans. Ms. Martin and the neurologists showed me how to identify neurological problems through imaging alone. Throughout the week, I came to understand that being a physician means more than just specializing in one area. It requires a comprehensive understanding of how different regions of the body interact. Many patient cases involved overlapping issues across specialties and because of that, I had the chance to meet three cardiologists, two orthopedic doctors, two neurosurgeons, four physical therapists, and many, many dedicated nurses. Most of the patients I encountered were older adults, and through listening to them and their families, I began to appreciate the emotional complexity of healthcare as well. It is a field full of both heartbreak and hope. What struck me most about medicine was its unpredictability as every day brought something new. There was never a dull moment, whether it was a change in a patient’s condition overnight or the emergence of new symptoms. That constant sense of discovery was exciting for me. Seeing Ms. Martin’s passion and commitment was deeply inspiring and gave me a clearer sense of what a career in medicine could look like. Shadowing Ms. Alex Martin at Bryn Mawr Hospital gave me hands-on exposure to neurology, patient care, and interdisciplinary teamwork, helping me realize how the dynamic and emotionally complex nature of medicine aligns closely with my strengths and interests.

Research Mentor: Ms. Judith Alexi
Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Judith Alexi
Place: Jazz Pharmaceuticals
Area of Interest: Pharmaceutical Sales
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Judith Alexi, a pharmaceutical sales representative for Jazz Pharmaceuticals. My essential research question was: “How has cancer research changed over the past couple years due to the patient’s genetic makeup?” My shadowing was specifically in the field of oncology. By shadowing Ms. Alexi, I was able to understand the daily tasks of a sales representative. While they must be able to sell the drugs to hospitals, the representatives must also be able to teach doctors and nurses how to administer them. Throughout my shadowing experience, we visited several different hospitals, giving them updates on my mentor’s company’s drug. This drug is specifically for biliary tract cancer which, besides chemotherapy, has no cure. The drug finds mutations and binds to that cell’s receptor to act as an inhibitor in order to prevent that cell from replicating any further. The drug is catered towards the patient’s specific cancer cells, whereas chemotherapy targets healthy and cancerous cells. These new innovations allow for more efficacy in a patient’s treatment. Throughout this whole experience, I gained extensive knowledge not only about the field of pharmaceuticals and their various duties but also the latest advancements in cancer research. I also gained such admiration for the compassion and drive that these representatives have towards selling their drugs to benefit the lives of patient’s and their families. This Capstone experience has left me with an excitement for the future of this field which I have gained even more interest in pursuing.

Shadowing Mentor: Mrs. Maria Sacchetta Place: And So It Glows Area of Interest: Finance/Business Ownership
During my shadowing experience at And So It Glows, a local mobile tanning business, I learned what it really takes to start and run a small business. I never realized how much planning goes into the financial side—buying equipment, managing supplies, and tracking expenses to stay profitable. I also got to assist during client visits and saw how each person had different preferences. The staff made sure everyone felt comfortable and received personalized service, which showed me the importance of good customer service. Another major part of the business is marketing. I learned how essential social media is for attracting and keeping customers. The owner regularly posted before-and-after
photos, promotions, and updates to engage clients. This experience gave me a new appreciation for the work behind the scenes in the beauty industry. It was inspiring and sparked my interest in entrepreneurship and possibly owning a business in the future.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Courtney Watson
Place: Delaware County Juvenile Probation Services
Area of Interest: Psychology
During my Capstone experience, I had the pleasure of shadowing Ms. Courtney Watson, a probation officer in Delaware County. My essential question was: “What are the current methods of reform and what are their success rates?” Ms. Watson showed me their system of inputting information about her cases based on receiving new information. For example, every six months probation officers are required to fill out a Youth Level of Service (YLS) form for each case. This form covers every aspect of the case, whether it is family situations, occupation, school, substance use, or social situations. After the interview is given and the form is completed, it must be put in their computer system and updated, along with any changes to their case regarding court, mandated programs, or community service. I found these YLS interviews to be the most interesting. Each interview varied based on the juvenile and his/her situation, so it was interesting to hear different perspectives. I also got the opportunity to sit in on two court hearings. The thing I loved most with Ms. Watson’s profession was how close she was to each of her clients and their families; she genuinely cared for each of them and took the time to get to know them and never judged them based on their situations. Another intriguing part of my shadowing experience was visiting one of her clients at school to interview him. It was interesting to go to her client’s school and experience something outside of the office. Overall, my shadowing experience was full of learning and getting to know what professions are out there for me!

Research Mentor: Dr. Lisa Becker- Schmall
Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Cindy Duckworth, MOT, and employees
Place: Bloom and Grow Therapy Services
Area of Interest: Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy
I spent my time during Capstone at Bloom and Grow Therapy Services, an occupational therapy office that helps young children who struggle with sensory disorders, core and body control, handwriting, and oth-
er foundational skills. My essential question was: “How does physical therapy contribute to an athlete’s biopsychosocial health?” My shadowing experience took a slight turn from my essential question, since I felt that it was important to experience both physical therapy and occupational therapy. During the research component of this project, I worked with Dr. Lisa Becker-Schmall, a physical therapist for dancers, and I learned a great deal about my essential question. I found in my research that athletes recover better when they are able to accept the fact that they are injured. Once athletes move into physical therapy to gain their strength back, the athletes know that they are working towards a goal of playing like they used to prior to injury, and that motivates them to get through physical therapy. During my shadowing at Bloom and Grow, I was able to see a different approach: the occupational therapist’s job is not only to help correct the issue, but to also determine why the issue is happening in the first place and what underlying factors have caused it to develop. I learned so much about children who struggle with everyday things and how it is important to ask why they are struggling instead of just moving along and fixing it. I am so thankful for this experience and everything that I have learned about physical and occupational therapy through Capstone.

Research Mentor: Ms. Jessica Mullen Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Melissa Norman and Ms. Kim Ingram Place: Holy Family University Library and Southampton Free Library Area of Interest: Library Science
I spent my Capstone experience at Holy Family University Library, an academic library, and Southampton Free Library, a public library, to gain a better understanding of both areas in the world of libraries. My essential question was: “How does restricting access to certain novels affect young readers’ intellectual, social, and cultural development across the United States?” The insight I gained from these libraries was invaluable to my research as I learned about different aspects of censorship from two perspectives: the academic and the community. While at Holy Family University Library, I learned about the many platforms and programs that ensure accessibility to information for all students. For example, the “interlibrary loan system” is an international network of libraries that loan resources to one another by mail, making it so all individuals can have access to whatever they need across the globe. I also spent time in the Holy Family University’s archives and learned about the importance of preserving knowledge and history. At Southampton Free Library, I observed and participated in their many programs for the public, like children’s story time, children’s music events, mahjong, and “Tea with the BBC” for the elderly. All of these events taught me
the foundational nature of libraries to their local areas as they are not only places to check out books, but also a means to engage local citizens in their communities. In regards to my research question, I learned all about the process of a book being challenged through a past real-life example that occurred at Southampton. The library had a set policy in place, and I was taken through the steps that the staff took to ensure that the challengers’ concerns were heard, while also protecting the library against censorship. This experience taught me about the resilience of our public libraries because of the measures they take to ensure that knowledge is free and accessible to the wider community. I am incredibly grateful for my experiences shadowing at Holy Family University Library and Southampton Free Library because it vastly broadened my perspective of the library world and showed me how important it is to engage in your community.

Shadow Mentor: Dr. Jay Tarnoff
Place: The Woodlynde School Area of Interest: Psychology
During my Capstone experience, I had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Jay Tarnoff, a psychologist at the Woodlynde School, specializing in psychoeducational testing. My essential question was: “What are the most effective strategies schools use to support children with social-emotional learning needs?” Through exploring a variety of classrooms from Kindergarten through Grade 12, I observed numerous strategies the school employs to address the diverse social-emotional learning needs of its students, which helped answer my research question. The Wilson Reading Program and the Connections classes for high schoolers, as well as SEL for children in grade school, particularly stood out to me. The Wilson Reading Program is a structured literary approach that segments words to help students with encoding and decoding skills. Connections classes teach high school students essential life skills, such as building peer relationships and managing emotions. During my time with Dr. Tarnoff, I was also able to examine a variety of tests, including those assessing intelligence, memory and learning, attention and executive functions, and linguistic processing. Additionally, I had the opportunity to observe him administering some of these tests in person and to review the scales used to interpret the results.

Shadow Mentor: Dr. Rachelle Lanciano
Place: Crozer Keystone Area of Interest: Oncology
For my Capstone experience, I had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Rachelle Lanciano, a radiation oncologist at Crozer Keystone. My essential question was: “How does early treatment affect cancer survival rates?” During the shadowing period, I was able to sit in on multiple patient appointments, gaining an in-depth understanding of different types of cancer and delving into the treatment process. Many of the appointments I observed were follow-ups, so I got to hear not only about how the treatment worked, but also how it affected patients. For example, when using radiation to treat breast cancer, the treated breast typically appears darker and smaller than the untreated breast. During the research part of my Capstone, I learned a lot about different types of imaging in the process of diagnosing cancer. During my shadowing, I was able to expand on this knowledge by actually looking at patients’ CT scans, PET scans, and mammograms. I also learned about how lifestyle, such as smoking and drinking habits, increases the risk of cancer. During my shadowing, I also had the opportunity to spend a day with Dr. Anthony Antonello, an ophthalmologist at Riddle Eye Associates. I learned about how diabetes can affect vision (specifically the retina), and how eye pressure can indicate risk of glaucoma. I was also able to observe a laser procedure for a patient after his cataract surgery, exposing me to a new side of medicine that I had initially never considered for myself. Both experiences were eye-opening, and I am very grateful to Dr. Lanciano and Dr. Antonello for the opportunity to observe them and learn more about their fields.

Shadow Mentor: Dr. Brad Holmsten
Place: Animal Clinic of Westtown Village Area of Interest: Veterinary Science
I spent my Capstone experience at the Animal Clinic of Westtown Village with Dr. Brad Holmsten, where I explored the essential question: “What are ways of treating cancer in dogs?” Throughout my time there, I had the opportunity to observe a variety of daily practices in the clinic, from routine wellness checkups with both dogs and cats to assisting with preparing dogs for surgery and blood work. I also got to sit in on several surgeries, giving me an up-close look at how veterinary teams operate in real time. One of the most difficult but eye-opening moments during my experience was witnessing the euthanasia of a severely neglected hus-
ky who weighed only 36 pounds when he should have been closer to 120. This moment had a strong emotional impact on me and reminded me of the importance of compassion and care in the veterinary profession. While I did not directly witness cancer treatments in action, my time at the clinic helped me better understand the responsibilities veterinarians take on when treating severe or terminal conditions in animals. I learned how vets must often balance medical knowledge with empathy and communication especially when helping owners make difficult decisions about their pets’ health. Overall, my Capstone experience confirmed my passion for veterinary science. Being around animals every day and learning from dedicated professionals made it clear to me that I want to pursue a career in this field. I am so grateful for the opportunity and the lessons I took from my time at the clinic.

Shadow Mentor: Ms. Gillian Kehs
Place: Aon
Area of Interest: Actuarial Science
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Ms. Gillian Kehs at Aon, an actuarial consulting firm. My essential question was: “What methods do actuaries use to assess and quantify risk in various industries, such as finance or life insurance?” My shadowing experience answered my essential question through the opportunities I had to watch my mentor as she worked. I realized that Excel is a major tool in the sector of actuarial consulting that allows actuaries to handle data sets and present them to their clients. Additionally, throughout the two weeks of shadowing, I was able to speak to many people at Aon and ask them questions about their academic journeys, exam process, and careers. I also had the opportunity to work on two different case studies with some of the junior employees at Aon. These case studies gave me more insight into what actuaries do and challenged me to think in ways I have never thought before. Through this experience, I learned that actuarial science is a strong career path for those who love math, as math is essential to their day-to-day work. I also received guidance into how I should tackle the actuarial exams, even though I am going to a college that does not have an actuarial program. Finally, I learned to ask as many questions as possible to lead to greater success. This experience was incredibly beneficial as it is a career path I can see myself pursuing.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Natalie Fritz
Place: Philadelphia Phillies
Interest: Communications/Public Relations
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Ms. Natalie Fritz, a season and group sales representative for the Philadelphia Phillies. During my two weeks of shadowing, I was able to watch and understand how the sales perspective of sports operates, how to interact with customers, and how to properly represent an organization. I was also given the opportunity to help a business PR representative for the Phillies, Jack Glenn, run a STEM event for children of local schools. Working directly with these children helped me understand what it means to give back to the community that supports such a large organization. I especially enjoyed helping with game days, where I participated in suite checks (ensuring all parts of a suite were in order), set up birthday packages for fans celebrating a special day, watched team batting practice, and ended the night by watching the game. My essential question was: “How does social media impact modern PR strategies?” Watching the work of those around me in the office, as well as having conversations with them about my essential question, gave me insight showing that social media has materially impacted modern PR tactics. As a fan of the Phillies since birth, I have learned so much about a team close to my heart and look forward to seeing the new friends I have created from this experience each time I go to Citizens Bank Park. I am incredibly grateful to have learned from Ms. Natalie Fritz and the rest of the Phillies staff and look forward to continuing my pursuit of a career in the communications field.

Shadowing Mentor: Dr. Tara Braccainte
Place: ATI Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic Area of Interest: Physical Therapy
For my Capstone experience, I shadowed my mentor, Dr. Tara Braccainte, as she carried out her daily responsibilities as a physical therapist at ATI Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic. Throughout my time there, I was able to observe and participate in the delivery of rehabilitative care to a wide variety of patients – mostly older adults recovering from surgeries or dealing with long-term mobility limitations. My essential question was: “How do sports injuries affect the mental health of athletes, and what role does physical therapy play in their recovery?” Each day, I joined Dr. Braccainte in her rounds, helping with exercises and observing evaluations. One of the most interesting parts of the experience was how Dr. Braccainte went about treating differ-
ent individuals. One of the patients she has been treating for a while has a neurological disorder that slows her down significantly. I noticed that the treatment of this patient was different from that of a teenager. Watching Dr. Braccainte, I witnessed how much she enjoys her job. She is also the manager of this clinic, so I witnessed business-related activities, such as dealing with angry or impatient people. I especially enjoyed learning how small improvements in physical strength and coordination can lead to significant changes in a patient’s ability to perform daily tasks, like dressing or walking independently. A favorite part of my experience was building relationships with patients and other physical therapists. Being able to follow the patients’ progress made the clinical lessons much more meaningful. The other physical therapists were amazing at their jobs, each with his/ her very own style. They were also kind and welcoming. Overall, my Capstone experience was incredibly enriching. It helped direct my passion for physical therapy and gave me a deeper understanding of the dedication and empathy required in this field. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and for the impact this experience has had on my future goals.

Places: Lachele Medical Aesthetics and Schweiger Dermatology
Area of Interest: Dermatology
I spent my Capstone experience at Lachele Medical Aesthetics and Schweiger Dermatology and was able to observe two physician assistants. My essential research question was: “What are recent advancements in skin cancer research?” Shadowing both Casey Hamilton and Fatima Camara helped me better understand my research question as I was presented with many new developing treatments. They showed me recently-evolved removal techniques as well as new studies involving skin cancer research. I was also able to observe skin checks and the procedure followed during a biopsy. It was so enlightening to observe the behind-the-scenes of the medical profession as well as the preparations taken for each patient. This shadowing experience solidified my intent to enter the medical field as a physician assistant and has made me very excited to assist other people in becoming the healthiest versions of themselves.

Place: University of Pennsylvania Infusion Center
Interest: Oncology Nursing
I spent my Capstone shadowing experience with the University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center, at their Valley Forge location. I started off this Capstone project researching anesthesiology nursing, with my essential question being: “How does the use of technology in anesthesia impact patient care and outcomes?” After much research on this topic, I was led to a different nursing profession that struck me with much interest, oncology nursing. I then was able to shadow many different infusion nurses and experience what their day to day job is like, especially in an outpatient setting. I was able to experience not only chemotherapy infusions but also many different infusions for various health conditions such as multiple sclerosis. My shadowing mentor walked me through the steps of how to place intravenous lines (IVs) and how ports are accessed for infusion therapies. I was also able to see the connections between the nurses and patients and the relationships made through the difficult process the patients are going through. I saw the emotional support the nurses offered to patients who were struggling.

Place: West Chester University Athletics Area of Interest: Athletic Training
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Mr. Jason Kopec at the West Chester University Athletic Center. My essential question was: “What are the challenges surrounding return to play for athletes?” After understanding and researching this topic, I got a better understanding of why rehabilitation and repetition are important for athletes returning to their sport. While I was at West Chester University Athletic Center, I was able to get a deeper knowledge of the technology used to help student athletes understand their own injuries and to prevent and/or manage them. My mentor walked me through the steps of how to assess an injury, how to create a specific rehabilitation plan, and how to follow the athlete through recovery. I also was able to see the connection that each athlete had through his/her relationship with their athletic trainer, and how it impacted their rehabilitation. Through this experience, I have learned many skills that can help enhance my experience in this career path and throughout college. I am so grateful to have been able to shadow Mr. Jason Kopec, and I thank all the athletic trainers at West Chester University. I look forward to working toward a career in athletic training.

Place: Conestoga Capital Advisors
Area of Interest: Mutual Funds
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Mr. Duane D’Orazio, the chief compliance Ooficer at Conestoga Capital Advisors. My essential question was: “How can artificial intelligence be used in the financial field to improve efficiency and benefit a firm?” Spending time with Mr. D’Orazio allowed me to dive deeper into this question, as the firm operates in the financial industry and manages its clients’ assets. I observed how the firm uses artificial intelligence to maximize efficiency while still maintaining quality and accuracy. Over the two weeks, I attended conference calls and team meetings, where we reviewed annual reports of various companies. While shadowing Mr. D’Orazio, I gained insights into the areas where AI can be beneficial and areas where human expertise is essential to achieve the desired results. Additionally, I learned pivotal skills that will help me excel in both college and the workforce, including navigating Bloomberg and creating slide reports. I furthered my knowledge by taking courses Bloomberg offers on investing and the economy. I am extremely honored to have had the opportunity to shadow Mr. D’Orazio and his colleagues. I learned an enormous amount about my research question and the financial field in general.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Lauren Cristella Place: Committee of Seventy Area of Interest: Political Science
I spent my shadowing experience at The Committee of Seventy in Philadelphia with my mentor, Ms. Lauren Cristella. Ms. Cristella works at a non-partisan political non-profit, and I observed her over a course of three days. My essential question was: “How does social media affect public opinion and voting behavior?” Over the course of my research and shadowing experience, I have learned more about this topic by having in-depth conversations about social media and its effect on politics. I got to see the non-profit’s impact report and how they have encouraged others to vote and have a voice in today’s political climate. I also attended a meeting about how artificial intelligence (AI) can affect their company in positive ways when integrated into their organization. Another aspect of my shadowing experience was event planning for a women’s event that was going to be held on my last day of shadowing. I helped out the staff by making name cards, setting up tables, and being a “wayfinder” for the event. Many prestigious members in government attended the event, including judges, congressional lead-
ers, and sponsors, like Penn Medicine, Comcast, and J.P. Morgan. Overall, this experience helped pave the way for my future career in politics by helping create networking opportunities for me.

Place: Pope John Paul II High School Area of Interest: Art Education
I spent my Capstone experience at Pope John Paul II High School and shadowed Mrs. Stephanie McLaughlin, an art teacher who taught me at Villa and is now experiencing her first year at a new school. During my time shadowing, I observed Mrs. McLaughlin’s use of the classroom as well as how she makes her curriculum plans for the classes she teaches, which are Introduction to Art, Photography, and Graphic Design. As someone who is interested in becoming an art teacher, my exposure to shadowing an art educator helped me develop a deeper understanding of my research essential question: “How beneficial is it for students to learn art and/or incorporate art classes in their curriculum?” Now, more than ever, it is so important for students to learn different cultural and ideological perspectives and historical periods through the study and practice of art, which was seen through my mentor’s incorporation of history and art fundamentals, like color theory, into her class structure. Through my research and experience, with the help of Mrs. McLaughlin, I have concluded that art education should be taken more seriously, especially in a school setting, since the arts provide developmental and cultural competency for an individual that they might not get through an exclusively science and math-focused curriculum.

Place: Main Line Today Magazine Area of Interest: Sports Journalism
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Miss Gina Lizzo, the managing editor at Main Line Today Magazine. Throughout my Capstone experience, I attended photoshoots and interviews for both the July and August issues of the magazine, attended lunches, witnessed editorial meetings, and attended a panel where Miss Lizzo was speaking. It was very interesting to see all the different aspects of her job, and it helped me realize that the world of journalism is not as small as I originally thought. On my second day with Miss Lizzo, I attended the July issue cover shoot and interview of Tom Kline, the head coach for Downingtown West football. As someone
who wants to go into sports journalism, I found it exciting and entertaining to peek into what small-side sports journalism looks like. I also learned a lot about the social media side of journalism to help build your brand, which includes collaborating with different creators and businesses! Shadowing Ms. Lizzo, though it did not follow my original Capstone topic, was very informative and a truly amazing experience. Overall, I am very grateful for the opportunity to shadow Ms. Lizzo and for my Capstone experience in general.

Shadowing Mentors: Mr. William Lehan, Mr. Kyle Maher Place: WPHL and B&E Sportswear Area of Interest: Graphic Design
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing at television station WPHL and B&E Sportswear. At WPHL, I shadowed Mr. William Lehan, the senior multimedia designer. I worked on logos for their upcoming morning lifestyle show, Positively Philly, and was also taught video editing techniques, while working on a snipe advertisement for television. At B&E Sportswear, I shadowed Mr. Kyle Maher, the art department director. During my time there, I observed the screen printing process, learned about vectorized images for print, learned various Adobe Illustrator techniques, and worked on personal logos and shirt designs for clients. I enjoyed my time at B&E and was offered a job on my last shadowing day as their new social media manager. My essential question for this experience was: “How do cultural differences influence design choices?” Throughout this experience, I was able to observe the implications of this question from two different perspectives: how to appeal to a broad audience with WPHL and how to please specific audiences and clientele with B&E Sportswear. Overall, as someone who wants to pursue a creative career, it was extremely interesting to observe the various paths of graphic design and learn technical skills and I am thankful for the opportunities my shadowing experiences gave me.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Katie Scaggs Place: CTDI
Area of Interest: Event Planning
I spent my Capstone experience at CTDI with Ms. Katie Scaggs and Ms. Courtney Lofgren (culture and events), Ms. Lisa Kelly (wellness) and Mr. Keith Montone (administrative healthcare), and Ms. Armena Ballard (marketing). Throughout my time there, I experienced a diverse understanding of the business of CTDI. It was especially interesting shadowing these departments of the business, as I was less familiar with their impact. With culture and events, I was provided the opportunity to shadow Ms. Scaggs throughout her week as she engaged in meetings discussing and planning for future events, sold raffle prizes to their winners, advertised and helped prepare for the wellness fair, and engaged in her weekly sync meeting. Furthermore, in shadowing Armena Ballard, I experienced the marketing side of CTDI, which is different from that of many companies as its marketing is not outward, but inward. This was especially interesting, as I am familiar with outward marketing –the marketing that I see in advertisements that appear on my phone or on billboards. I did not know that marketing was so important within CTDI. This was interesting to learn. My experience shadowing events and culture and marketing was extremely unique as it is important to not only be skilled in event planning and marketing when in these jobs, but to also understand the business. Therefore, I had a fun time learning the ins and outs of culture and events, and marketing, while also learning the ins and outs of the business. Finally, in shadowing Ms. Kelly and Mr. Montone, I was provided the opportunity to understand healthcare within a business setting, allowing me to explore my interests in the administrative side of medicine. Preceding this experience, I had never considered the importance of healthcare in a business like CTDI, whose sole focus is providing technological repair services. As I shadowed Ms. Kelly, following her through her week as she planned and ran her wellness fair and prepared to send her monthly wellness newsletter, I understood the importance of providing wellness
information and opportunities to employees. Not only does providing wellness to a company’s employees help keep their employees mentally and physically healthy, but it also decreases the cost of healthcare for the company, as Mr. Montone explained to me. Through my experience, I learned many things in regard to many different careers, which was especially helpful as an incoming college student who does not know exactly what career she wants to pursue. Therefore, my senior shadowing experience was extremely valuable.

Place: Elevate Healthcare Marketing Area of Interest: Business
I spent my Capstone experience at Elevate Healthcare Marketing learning about the different departments that make up the agency, as well as physically observing work life. My essential research question was: “How do robotic-assisted surgical systems improve outcomes in orthopaedic surgery compared to traditional methods?” The three days I spent at Elevate Healthcare gave me the opportunity to explore the advertising tactics and project workflow behind marketing products such as robotic-assisted surgical methods to hospitals and medical professionals. Throughout the week, I sat in on meetings, video calls, and even experienced talking with the different departments that make up the agency. On day one, I sat in on multiple meetings for project designs, as well as a Zoom call for a pediatric ministration film. I also discussed Elevate’s project workflow procedure with their project management supervisor. On day two, I met with multiple employees who worked within different departments, such as finance, project management, human resources, and the creative team. During these meetings, I learned about each department’s purpose at Elevate, and the logistics of what their work entailed. I was even shown real-life examples of some of the work that they have completed for the agency. On day three, I met with more employees in different departments, such as account management and project management. I also attended multiple different meetings, including a few kick-off meetings, as well as internal status meetings. Overall, my Capstone experience was definitely educational and really paved the way for what I want my career to be in the future. I am so thankful I got to shadow Elevate and make those connections that will be beneficial when I am looking for either an internship or job.

Shadowing Mentor: Ms. Melanie McGuire, CRNP Place: Lankenau Hospital and Paoli Hospital Area of Interest: Nursing
I spent my Capstone shadowing two different departments in the hospital. The first week, I shadowed a nurse practitioner who specializes in facial plastic surgery. For the second week, I volunteered at the Cancer Center in Lankenau Hospital. For the research part of Capstone, I followed a labor and delivery nurse and learned about the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and complications before/during/after childbirth. My essential question was: “How do roles of different healthcare professionals in specialized fields contribute to holistic patient outcomes and delivery of quality care?” Because I plan on attending Duquesne University next year to major in nursing, I wanted to use my Capstone experience to prepare me both intellectually and morally to become the best nurse I can be. During my time shadowing with the nurse practitioner, I was able to learn that the facial plastic surgery department is more than I previously thought it would be. It is more than just Botox and post-surgery stitch removal. Ms. McGuire helped patients with hematomas, sinus infections, and tinnitus. During my time volunteering at the Cancer Center, I was able to communicate and welcome the patients. Listening to their life stories and witnessing their courage deeply inspired me. I am so grateful for the opportunity to help people when they need it the most – even if it was only to get them water, pillows, food, etc. I am happy I made their days just a little more comfortable. The experiences I had with Capstone I will never forget and I truly cherish. I would like to answer my essential question by saying that shadowing in different departments with nurses who have various specialties gives me a broader, more diverse perspective of the medical world. I now have a deeper understanding of what my future patients may go through, both mentally and physically. This insight will allow me to give a more holistic care for potential future patients. I am excited to carry the lessons I received throughout nursing school and beyond, where I hope to offer the same level of care and empathy to those who need it most.

Place: Wella Professionals Area of Interest: Business
I spent my Capstone experience with my aunt, Ms. Elizabeth Maul, Senior Vice President at Wella Company. My essential question was: “How does brand loyalty affect the buying habits of certain consumers?” Throughout my experience, I had the opportunity to sit in on meetings and calls, learn about upcoming products, attend commercial shoots, and gain a better understanding of branding strategies. I learned how companies build brand loyalty and how it affects the way different people choose what to buy. Ms. Maul and I had many conversations about the different sectors of consumerism and how marketing approaches must shift depending on the audience. To broaden my perspective on careers in the business world and begin networking, Ms. Maul introduced me to four of her colleagues and former coworkers in different fields, such as finance, commercial real estate, entrepreneurship, and executive brand management. I spoke with each of them about their paths, day-to-day responsibilities, and how their work connects to consumer habits and loyalty. These conversations not only provided valuable insight into my essential question, but also offered meaningful advice. This experience gave me a better understanding of how companies operate and grow and affirmed my desire to pursue a career in business.

Place: Delaware County Courthouse
Area of Interest: Psychology
I spent my Capstone experience at the Delaware County Courthouse shadowing Mr. Tanner Rouse, who is the first assistant district attorney (DA) in Delaware County. My essential question was: “What are the most used methods of criminal interrogation and if/how are they effective?” Throughout my shadowing experience, I was able to sit in a courtroom and watch court hearings. I was able to see the behind-the-scenes of pre-
paring for court and the interactions between everyone in the courtroom off the record. I was also given the opportunity to sit in on a job interview and see the kind of questions they asked, the type of candidate they were looking for, and how the interview was conducted. I felt very lucky to be able to be there not as the interviewee, because I was able to take a different perspective on the interview process. Another part of my shadowing experience was being able to watch jury selection. This was something I had not seen or been exposed to before, so being part of it was very fascinating. Overall, I learned what it is like to be in a courtroom and how quick the hearings go. I also learned the importance of relationships in the workplace and how, without them, jobs would be nearly impossible. My Capstone experience is one that I am very grateful for because I would not have been able to learn any of this without it.

I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Ms. Rachel Cahill who is in the department of pharmaceutical sales at AbbVie. One of the most valuable aspects of this experience was the opportunity to attend Zoom calls and listen in on conversations with healthcare professionals. This allowed me to observe firsthand the dynamics of the industry and the important interactions that shape it. My essential question was: “How does the relationship between pharmaceutical companies and healthcare professionals affect the industry?” During my time shadowing, I came to the conclusion that the relationship between the salesperson and pharmaceutical company is vital. It stems from reliability, trust, and knowledge. These factors are essential for ensuring effective communication, fostering long-term partnerships, and ultimately driving success within the industry. Overall, my experience was something that will stay with me throughout my sales career and I am very grateful for the opportunity.

Place: Chester County History Center Area of Interest: Conservation
I spent my Capstone experience at Chester County History Center (CCHC), a medium-sized museum in West Chester. My essential question was: “When considering the ethics of conservation, should a museum’s ability to care for cultural property carry more weight
than the culture of origin?” During the research process, I learned about the Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), which helped me to answer my question, as the key is consent and communication. During my shadowing experience, my mentor explained how CCHC interacts with the Lenape people in accordance with NAGPRA. We also visited West Chester’s museum and anthropology department, where I learned about the ethics of keeping objects that fall into the NAGPRA category and also, more recent objects that were found in the desert from deceased or missing migrants. I also learned about different museum functions, setting up for events, shadowing tours, photographing and cataloguing objects, and reorganizing the library. One of the tours I shadowed was with Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library graduate students. I was invited to their open house and a tour of some of the floors at Winterthur that are not open to the public. I am very grateful for the experiences and connections my shadowing mentor introduced me to. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into databases, libraries, and museums.

Shadowing Mentor: Ed Lynch Place: Diversified Tax, LLC Area of Interest: Accounting
I spent my Capstone experience at Diversified Tax, LLC, shadowing Mr. Ed Lynch and his staff. During my shadowing experience, I had the opportunity to observe a multitude of employees—the administrative assistant, bookkeeper, finance manager, tax preparer, senior tax preparer, and vice president. The firm made it clear that teamwork is imperative among the employees: first, the tax preparers must complete the first draft of the tax return, then it is sent to the senior preparer who reviews the return for any mistakes, and lastly, it is directed to the vice president to be signed and finalized. To frame my research before shadowing, my essential question was: “Should high schools require an accounting/finance class?” I concluded, with the help of my research mentor, Ms. Kristina Parker, that it would be of utmost benefit for future accountants to start their basic accounting classes prior to college, but a class like this could also teach all high school students the value of the dollar, how to budget their money wisely—how to prepare for their financial future.

Shadowing Mentors: Ms. Brittany Papili PA-C, Lankenau NICU Team
Place: Chester County Hospital and Lankenau Medical Center
Area of Interest: Neonatal Intensive Care
I was fortunate to shadow at two different places for my Capstone shadowing experience: in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Lankenau Medical Center and adult medicine at Chester County Hospital. My essential question was: “What are the effects of family involvement on both the family and infant in the NICU?” During my time at Lankenau, I observed many different nurses caring for infants. The babies ranged in conditions from being born extremely premature to full-term babies who just needed additional transitional care before being discharged. The NICU team gave me hands-on experience by allowing me to hold a baby, listen to a heartbeat, assist with diaper changes, and do temperature readings. My time at Chester County Hospital was a little different, but just as fulfilling. I was able to observe physician assistants as they assessed a wide range of adult patients, many of whom were older, with cardiac or respiratory conditions. I followed the PAs as they charted information and attended rounds. Overall, both of these experiences were incredibly helpful in answering my essential question. In the NICU, I was able to witness firsthand how involved the parents were in their infant’s care, both physically and emotionally. Parental involvement levels were even a specific section for charting done by the nurses. Additionally, although my experience at Chester County did not involve infants, I saw how important it is for healthcare providers to communicate with those close to the patient to make sure they receive proper treatment. I’ve learned that hospital patients, no matter their age, are a vulnerable population that need care from both their skilled healthcare providers and involved families.

Shadowing Mentor: Dr. Marie Luksch
Place: Main Line Health
Area of Interest: Medicine
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Dr. Luksch, an OBGYN physician at Main Line Health. My essential question was: “What are some common complications during pregnancy, and how can they be managed to ensure the health of both mother and baby?”
Although the answer to this question may seem straightforward, I quickly discovered that the answer is far more complex. There are so many aspects that go into understanding why certain things happen to women who seem fairly healthy. It is common and scary for things to
not go exactly as planned during a pregnancy, it is a truly unpredictable experience. Throughout my time shadowing Dr. Luksch, I was able to observe a wide range of procedures. I witnessed a C-section and hysterectomy performed with the assistance of a surgical robot in the operating room. I also spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where I saw both healthy and extremely sick babies. Lastly, I visited the office where I heard many conversations between Dr. Luksch and her patients—some were routine checkups, while others involved more serious concerns. I observed visits from non-pregnant women who came in for annual exams or a Pap test. Through Dr. Luksch’s guidance, I learned many valuable lessons about obstetrics and gynecology. I learned that supporting patients goes beyond clinical treatment—it involves empathy, clear communication, and adaptability. These lessons will stay with me as I continue on my journey in medicine.

Research Mentor: Ms. Laura Grandieri
Shadow Mentor: Ms. Laura Taylor
Place: Mingle Mocktails Area of Interest: Entrepreneurship
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Ms. Laura Taylor, the founder of Mingle Mocktails. During my time at Mingle Mocktails, I got a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to run a small business. I helped with packaging products and organizing shipments, and I got to see how the team approaches marketing. I attended meetings and went to an event where I was introduced to a world of many young woman entrepreneurs. I created social media content, showcasing some of my own creative ideas. It was really fascinating to see how much thought goes into every little detail –even sending packages to possible buyers/influencers, etc. – and the packaging of the product itself. My original essential question was: “What factors contribute to brand loyalty among consumers in fashion?” Although I did not end up exploring the fashion industry directly, I still answered the core of the question (brand loyalty) through my experience working with Mingle Mocktails. When brainstorming social media content with Ms. Taylor, the same idea kept coming up: authenticity. We talked about how people do not want to see a perfect, cookie-cutter version of a brand; they connect more with what is real. As a consumer myself, I explained to Ms. Taylor that when people respect the person behind the brand, they are more likely to support it. So, we leaned into that idea. We filmed content featuring her family, her dogs, and even did a tour of her messy office, on purpose, so people could see the reality behind the brand. It was not about being polished, it was about being honest and real. I also learned how much work and passion actually goes into running a business. Ms. Taylor cares so deeply about Mingle because she built it from
the ground up, starting with a vision board. She wanted to contribute to society in her own way, and even though she has gained recognition for her brand, she stays grounded and keeps thinking of ways to expand the brand and also get input on ideas. She is open about her journey – how she left her job, the research she did to come up with her idea for her company, meeting with a person with a failed mocktail company, the challenges she faced, and everything it took to build her company from the ground up.

I spent my Capstone experience at CBRE, Inc, the largest commercial real estate company in the world, observing numerous marketing specialists in different roles. My essential research question was: “What are effective marketing strategies used in commercial real estate?” Shadowing Mrs. Andrel, as well as many other professionals, helped me learn how vital marketing is throughout every aspect of business, especially in real estate. During my experience, I sat in on meetings, including those with the marketing team as well as company executives. I was able to observe interactions between professionals and discover how to better communicate in an effective way. I was able to understand the importance of communication, especially in a time-sensitive field. By shadowing people in different roles, I could see the versatility of marketing and how it is important in every step of the process, from marketing properties to marketing the brokers themselves. Overall, my shadowing experience could not have been any better. CBRE has a very positive work environment and made me feel welcome. Following this, I feel more confident in my future pursuing a career in commercial real estate. I also aim to have a similar mindset and attitude to those I shadowed.

Shadowing Mentor: Various dieticians
Place: Pennsylvania Hospital Area of Interest: Nutrition
I spent my Capstone experience at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia and shadowed multiple dietitians. My essential question was: “How does the role of a dietitian impact a patient’s hospital stay?” I experienced various departments in the hospital including the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). I also visited psychiatric patients. I learned a
lot about the role of a dietitian in a hospital and the importance of that role. The first thing a dietitian does before visiting patients is to go over their charts and get to know more about each patient and why they are in the hospital. Then they visit the patient and ask questions about how they are eating, nutritional history, how often they are eating, etc. Then they update the patient’s chart and accommodate their needs. It was very interesting learning about how the role of a dietitian varies when it comes to the patient’s age, condition, and health. I learned how the dietitians determine what nutrients a patient needs, such as electrolytes or protein. Some patients can not eat using their mouth, so a feeding tube is required. It was very interesting learning about how to monitor the feeding tube and how to make sure the patient is getting what he needs. I enjoyed experiencing the different aspects of the hospital because each patient is so different. The one thing that is similar is that the role of a dietitian is very important because a patient needs adequate nutrition in order to shorten the hospital stay and hopefully thrive better in life.

Research Mentor: Liam Dorsey Shadowing Mentor: Haley D’Agostino Place: Wildlands Conservancy Area of Interest: Environmental Management
My Capstone experience took place at Wildlands Conservancy in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. I had the privilege of shadowing a dedicated team of women leading the environmental education and animal care units. The Wildlands Conservancy plays a vital role in land preservation and the restoration of natural areas within the Lehigh River watershed. Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of fostering an appreciation for nature and wildlife in younger generations. My essential research question explored: “How does ecotourism benefit conservation efforts for ecosystems?” I found my answers through involvement in environmental education while engaging with elementary school students. During my time with the organization, I had the opportunity to teach a wide range of environmental topics to students across various grade levels. Some of my favorite lessons included the anatomy and ecological benefits of worms, which involved collecting native specimens for hands-on classroom exploration. I also taught about pollution and runoff using an interactive EnviroScape model, and led activities focused on stream health and macroinvertebrate collection. In addition to classroom instruction, I participated in educational programs featuring live animals that could no longer survive in the wild. These included skunks, hawks, and tarantulas, which we cared for at the conservancy and used as teaching tools to inspire curiosity and respect for wildlife. This shadowing experience allowed
me to merge my passions for education and animal care. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with the Wildlands Conservancy, as it provided valuable knowledge and practical experience that will serve as a foundation for my future career and long-term goals.

Place: HDR Area of Interest: Civil Engineering
I spent my Capstone experience at HDR, which is a civil engineering consultant firm, and met a variety of engineers from structural to environmental to transportation. My essential question was: “How do civil engineers help in disaster relief?” Through my shadowing experience, I spent time listening in meetings concerning public safety, near-crashes, and artificial technology to predict traffic patterns. I participated in a public meeting about the Chinatown Stitch Project in Philadelphia, which is a construction project that will go over Route 676 and create a bridge that reconnects the two sides of Chinatown and the communities within them. HDR also designs projects for PennDOT, which is the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. One day, I went on a tour of the newly-constructed building and saw the traffic control center that keeps track of all major highways in Pennsylvania and the PA Turnpike. I met with a number of people who worked specifically on bridges and roadways, learning about the design projects when the roadways are being reconstructed. I learned that during the time of disasters that it is imperative for open communication between different civil engineers. Overall, I enjoyed my Capstone shadowing and I am so thankful for this opportunity given to me. this experience has allowed me to understand the roles civil engineers have from projects as small as a bridge on City Avenue to reconfiguring of I-270.

Place: The Rittenhouse Hotel
Area of Interest: Luxury hospitality management
I spent my Capstone at the Rittenhouse Hotel in Philadelphia under the direction of Mrs. Adrienne Fehringer, Director of Sales. My essential question was: “How can artificial intelligence transform guest experiences and managerial efficiency in the luxury hotel sector?” Through my experience shadowing the various departments at the hotel, I learned how artificial intelligence is utilized while still maintaining the personal touch signature of the luxury hotel sector. I had the op-
portunity to assist with various projects, including using AI to compile a list of comparable wedding packages at nearby hotels and their unique amenities, offerings, and price points. I also toured the nearby Westin hotel and discussed the differences between a branded hotel and an independent hotel, which further contributed to my general understanding of the industry. Additionally, I assisted with a marketing photo shoot for the rebranding of one of their restaurants and observed how AI can assist with social media engagement. In order to prepare for this, I compiled a list of comparable restaurants in the area, which included their price point, private dining options, and signature menu items. Overall, my time at the Rittenhouse was a rewarding and educational experience, and I am extremely grateful to Mrs. Fehringer for taking the time to introduce me to her work and the work of those in the hotel.

Place: Dupont Experimental Station and Nemours Children’s Hospital Area of Interest: Biomedical Engineering, Phage Technology
I spent my Capstone experience at DuPont Experimental Station and Nemours Children’s Hospital, both in Wilmington, Delaware, with Mr. Joshua Faust and Mrs. Margaret Gilman. My essential question was: “Is phage technology the next step in combating infectious diseases?” During the first week of Capstone, I spent most of my time in a lab at DuPont Experimental Station with a graduate student studying to earn his Ph.D. while also conducting cancer research. Mr. Faust was researching the effectiveness of different antibiotics on cancer cells, and I observed different experiments he conducted with cancer cells he grew in the lab. Furthermore, he showed me the plethora of technology in the lab used to collect and analyze data from his experiments. This experience helped answer my essential question by providing me with knowledge of discovering new phenomena in medicine and the power of technology in furthering advancements in the biomedical field. During the second week of Capstone, I spent time with Mrs. Margaret Gilman in the Infection Prevention and Control Department at Nemours Children’s Hospital. I was introduced to multiple individuals within this department and explored the numerous aspects of infectious disease control that take place within the hospital. Furthermore, I was able to watch an open-heart surgery take place and observe Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) babies to analyze how important the job of an infection preventionist is in ensuring these procedures occur properly. Both experiences provided me with incredible knowledge about the processes within the biomedical field and the continuous moving parts that play into introducing new technology in medicine.

Research Mentor: Mr. Matt MacNeal
Shadow Mentor: Mr. Matt MacNeal
Place: Veery Capital Area of Interest: Finance
For my Capstone experience, I spent two weeks shadowing Mr. Matt MacNeal, a partner at Veery Capital. During my time there, I got a firsthand look into what it is like to work in the finance world and be a part of a financial advisory team. I learned all about being an owner of a business - from building it to the top to helping clients manage their money. Each day, I was able to sit in on meetings with the team where they talked about clients and their financial goals. I would listen in on client phone calls, go over final reports before meetings, and learn how their team builds investment plans that include things like stocks, bonds, and retirement accounts. I learned how to work many other databases where they hold the value of their clients’ money and their transactions. I even got to help with a mock client project where I worked with the team members to come up with investment ideas. Through this experience, I gained a valuable insight into equity markets, income strategies, and the role that finance plays in our lives. I saw firsthand the trust and strong relationships that the team members have gained with their clients. My essential research question was: “How do small businesses leverage digital marketing compared to traditional marketing methods and which strategies are most effective?” Spending time with Mr. MacNeal has helped me answer this question. At Veery Capital, my mentor explained how important marketing is – especially in their financial firm, which depends on trust and long-term relationships with their clients. He showed me how the companies use digital marketing strategies like social media and a website to connect with clients and attract new ones. They also use many databases to track the money flow and how they manage it. My mentor also shared how traditional methods like in-person events play a huge role in their success. He said that combining these two helps the business reach all groups. Overall, this experience opened my eyes to how much care goes into helping people plan for their future and it made me more excited to maybe one day work in this field myself.

Shadowing Mentor: Officer Ashley Logan Place: Willistown Police Department Area of Interest: Law Enforcement
I spent my Capstone experience at the Willistown Police Department shadowing Officer Ashley Logan. My essential question was: “How has the role of forensics impacted the rate of crimes solved?” Throughout shad-
owing time, I was able to visit various agencies including the 911 Center, Chester County Prison, and the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus. But the one agency that really helped me understand the impact of forensics in law enforcement was at the district attorney’s office. The D.A. has a team that conducts investigations using fingerprinting, technology, and ballistics, which can allow for the verification of the suspects involved in the crime. My time with Officer Logan, when we were either in the office or the car, taught me all the duties of police officers that not everyone might know. I was able to learn about what happens during a traffic stop and a car accident and all the paperwork that is involved in it. I was also able to see the connections between the police department and their neighboring schools and hospitals and the relationships that they have with each other. I am so thankful for all the knowledge I’ve gained from these experiences. This project has increased my interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement.

Shadowing Mentor: Mrs. Julia Deves Place: Pfizer Area of Interest: Marketing and Sales
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing Mrs. Julia Deves, a Pfizer marketing employee. My essential research question was: “What role does brand loyalty play in the purchasing decisions of certain demographics, and can companies foster this loyalty?” Spending time with Mrs. Deves helped me to answer this question, because in her department she works on the delivery of a product and works to reach the right audiences, depending on the product that they are selling. I learned that many companies use CRM, which is Customer Relationship Marketing. CRM creates a direct relationship with the company and its customers through things like email and direct mail. Mrs. Deves works to market many different medicines. My main focus was on Nurtec, a migraine medication. I had the opportunity to sit in on meetings with the advertising team, the business team, and the media team. I got to understand everything that goes into not just marketing but advertising a product and how a product reaches its target audience in order to be successful. Nurtec is a migraine medicine that has many competitors. I learned that migraines are more common in middle-aged women, so they are the target audience for this specific product. I spent time researching and comparing Nurtec to its competitors, specifically analyzing the marketing techniques of both medicines. Ultimately, I found that there are many different ways to reach the target market, and each product will have a different target audience with different marketing strategies. It was an honor to work with Mrs. Deves and her team and to see all the hard work, pas-
sion, and creativity that goes into this field of work. This project continued to inspire me to pursue marketing and sales diligently in college.

Research Mentor: Ms. Stephanie Iacovino Shadow Mentor: Ms. Stephanie Iacovino Place: Gingys’s Boutique Area of Interest: Retail Management
I spent my Capstone experience at Gingy’s Boutique in Wayne, PA, with Ms. Stephanie Iacovino. My essential question was: “What keeps customers interested in the ‘in store’ retail experience?” During my first week of Capstone, I spent most of my time learning about the inventory of the boutique, but I was really focused on the customers who come into the store. My shadow mentor’s main goal was to show me that the most important focus of being in retail management is customer service. She taught me that a store like Gingy’s has a very positive customer community, since it offers positive and strong customer service and feedback. I would follow her around the store and make sure that we were responding to all of the customers’ needs and questions about the clothing. I would also be taken upstairs to the back rooms to learn how to restock the inventory once a customer buys something. I assisted my mentor in steaming some of the clothing, as most of the clothing in the back would be placed onto the main floor eventually. I was able to learn how to check customers out at the cash register. Through this experience, I was able to understand the importance of customer service and how having a positive and well-rounded environment can impact the people who come into the store.

Research Mentor: Dr. Anthony Mosakowski
Shadow Mentor: Dr. Anthony Mosakowski Place: Harris School Area of Interest: Music Education
For my Capstone experience, I spent a week shadowing Dr. Mosakowski at the Harris School in Delaware County, PA. My essential research question was: “How does music education affect children’s mental health?” Through my time at Harris, I was able to sit in on various different music classes from Grades 1 through 8. Some classes sang, some made music on their Chromebooks with BandLab, and some played instruments like recorders, glockenspiels, and boomwhackers. I was also able to briefly sit in on some brass and percussion lessons with Ms. King. Every class was different, and that made each day all the more interesting. I witnessed how perceptive (and unperceptive) children can be towards music. Generally, most of the students enjoyed the assignments,
but some refused to learn or participate. Throughout the week, I ultimately learned that music will only affect young students if they let it. Some classes were not able to start the lesson at all due to rowdiness, but some classes were able to get through the day’s lesson with time to spare. Classes who were able to complete the lesson and listen to directions enjoyed the music they were making - and this all culminated in the success of the Spring Choral Concert. I was able to watch and help out with their first Spring Choral Concert. I saw both children and parents thoroughly enjoy the singing and community the concert brought to the children. I am incredibly grateful for this amazing opportunity, and I am so excited to become a music teacher in four years!!

Place: Brandywine Aviation and Maintenance Area of Interest: Aviation
I spent my Capstone experience at a regional airport in West Chester, shadowing aviation professionals and learning about airport operations, aircraft maintenance, and air traffic procedures. My essential research question was: “How do human factors affect pilots’ performance in stressful situations while flying in the cockpit?” Through this experience, I uncovered how every aspect of airport logistics, from ground control to mechanical inspections, plays a vital role in the successful movement of aircraft and passengers. During the first week of shadowing, I toured the airport’s control tower and observed how air traffic controllers manage takeoffs, landings, and in-air traffic coordination. I also shadowed ground crew members, learning how they perform routine checks on aircraft and guide taxiing planes. Later in the week, I assisted in inspecting hangars and reviewing maintenance schedules to better understand FAA compliance and safety regulations. The next week, I joined the airport operations team to observe emergency preparedness drills, runway inspections, and weather-related decision-making processes. I also sat in on briefings with pilots and maintenance technicians to learn how flight safety is continuously evaluated through teamwork and technical precision. At the end of my experience, I joined students at ground school, where they studied the human and medical factors of aviation and how they play an important role in flying. During ground school, students were studying for their “check ride,” which includes about a five-hour long oral exam followed by a flight with an instructor. In order to pass this exam and receive their next license, students must master the information provided in ground school and put it into practice while flying.

Place: Aneu Kitchen
Area of Interest: Entrepreneurship
I spent my Capstone experience shadowing the team at Aneu Kitchen, a locally-owned business known for its fresh meals and healthier food options. My essential question was: “What are the three key factors to running a successful business?” During my time there, I observed the daily operations, from managing staff and inventory to customer service and marketing strategies. I quickly realized how much time, energy, and heart goes into sustaining a business like this. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was how crucial it is to have a trusted and dedicated team. The success of Aneu Kitchen clearly depended on the mutual respect and reliability among the staff. I also saw the importance of building a strong relationship with the surrounding community, as many customers were loyal regulars. Lastly, I understood how essential focus and consistency are to the growth of a business. Running a business requires long hours, constant decision-making, and adaptability. Overall, my experience helped me see that while entrepreneurship is full of challenges, the rewards of hard work, passion, and resilience truly pay off. I left inspired by the dedication I witnessed and more motivated than ever to pursue a future in business.

Place: Willistown Conservation Trust Area of Interest: Ecology and Conservation
I spent my Capstone experience at the Willistown Conservation Trust, monitoring and maintaining equipment, taking water samples, clearing invasive plants, and bird banding. My essential research question was: “How do water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH affect the population of local species?” Through this experience, I was able to uncover how all the biotic and abiotic factors of the environment contribute to the overall well-being of the ecosystem. During the first week of shadowing, I went to water sampling sites around the local community and cleaned sensors that transmitted data about the water’s conductivity, temperature, and depth. I also learned about the process of bird banding and identification, and cleared invasive plants from Kirkwood Preserve. The next week, the team and I performed a water sample study on the creek where one of the sensors was reading unusually high conductivity levels. We collected data on water temperature, conductivity, nitrites and nitrates, and the concentration of NaCl and Cl, then wrote a short report on our findings.
Through these experiences, I felt I was able to gain a better understanding of how elements of the environment, particularly streams, birds, and invasive plant species, all interact with each other to build our ecosystem in our backyards. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to shadow these individuals and am excited to pursue this career.

Place: Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania
Area of Interest: Biomedical Engineering
I spent my Capstone experience at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, with Mrs. Katie Weeks, Ms. McKenna Mason, Dr. Todd Kilbaugh, and Dr. Jeremy Zuckerburg. My essential research question was: “What are the most proficient methods for tissue regeneration?” I spent the first four days of my Capstone in the lab, working with mechanical and biomedical engineers. I worked on several platforms to expand my understanding of 3D printing. I had the privilege of watching a piece of the creation of their “phantom box,” which is a neuro-optical monitoring device. After gaining a better understanding of the mechanical side of the box and seeing how it would function, I observed the team working together to take measurements of the phantom box. The hospital also hosted poster presentation sessions throughout the week, where I could hear and ask questions about several other medical topics. To conclude my time in the lab, I was able to sit in on a speech given by an engineer on the team. She spoke about optics and the intended outcome of their current research. I spent my last day of shadowing at the hospital in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). I met with physicians and went through rounds with a team of pharmacists, nurses, and doctors. This gave me a better understanding of a medical perspective. Overall, this Capstone experience proved to be very productive and helped me answer many questions. I got to see firsthand the kinds of advancements that are being made in the engineering and medical fields and I am very grateful to have had this experience.

Place: Walnut Street Theatre
Area of Interest: Musical Theatre
My Capstone experience was spent at the oldest theatre in America, the Walnut Street Theatre. Taking the train in and out of Philadelphia by myself and walking to the theatre taught me skills about being on my own in
the real world. My mentor, Mr. Jeff Coon, is not only a phenomenal actor, but he is also so well educated on the development side of theatres. My essential question was: “What are the key elements of a successful fundraising campaign for a theatre company?” Mr. Coon and his team did not hesitate to include me in their work and teach me all they know. Throughout my time, I was thrown right into planning and setting up with their fundraising gala where I volunteered and attended. I learned all about the databases and how their nonprofit business brings money in and puts it right back into the theatre. I saw firsthand the impact that development and the business side of theatre has on, not only the theatre, but also the community. They put me to work and trusted me with many projects that were needed to set up for the gala. The Walnut Street Theater does such a beautiful job at making every person feel special and valued. Due to the commitment of the development team, they surpassed their goal and their gala raised over $300,000. Throughout my Capstone, I came to realize the intense but necessary work that is done on the business side of theatre. This experience made me realize that, although being on stage is my true passion, there are so many other and important aspects of theatre that I will be able to contribute to in the future. I plan to come back to Walnut after my four years of college and audition to be an acting apprentice so I can continue to share my gifts and learn at Walnut Street Theatre.

Place: University of Pennsylvania Hospital
Area of Interest: Intensive Care Nursery Nursing
I spent my Capstone experience at the ICN (Intensive Care Nursery) at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia PA. I had the opportunity to shadow Ms. Elizabeth Quigley and a few other nurses on the floor. She is currently the clinical director for Women’s Health at the hospital but has spent time in the ICN as a registered nurse at both CHOP and Pennsylvania Hospital. My essential question was: “How do nurses in the ICN provide critical care that supports both the medical needs of the baby and the emotional and psychological well-being of the family?” During my time at the hospital, I got to see my essential question in action, by observing how the nurses engaged with the parents after they saw their newborn babies struggling. I was able to help the nurses in one specific simple way, holding the babies. This simple action was able to free up the nurses to do their other various tasks, including preparing milk and medicines. The babies crave to be held, whether they are getting ready to leave or going through drug withdrawals. This Capstone experience made me feel both eager and excited for what I hope to be my future profession. I could not have asked for a better experience by learning all about being a nurse who deals with premature babies and how to properly communicate with and comfort familes as a whole.
