It is amazing to appreciate that, in less than a month, stellar athletes from 42 countries will convene in the city of Guadalajara—along with other regional destinations, Puerto Vallarta included—to participate in the 16th Pan American Games. Locally, open water swimming, triathlon and volleyball competitions will take place in Puerto Vallarta, while sailing events will be headquartered at the Paradise Village Marina, where the air is abuzz with anticipation. Indeed, a considerable number of individuals have been overcoming substantial logistical challenges for months in order for us to witness and be part of a unique opportunity to show our very best, as Banderas Bay becomes the focus of international athletes and members of the press. The good news is they will realize what we’ve known all along: Banderas Bay is an awesome destination for nautical activities, which are constantly increasing, not only in participants but also in diversity.

In the previous edition of this publication, we acknowledged the increasing popularity of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) in the region by featuring the sport on our cover. Twelve months later, it’s not surprising to look out at the bay and spot a handful of people SUPing, regardless of your location. Along with longboard surfing, kite and windsurfing, these activities are wonderful vehicles for younger generations to catch the nautical “bug.”

In this edition, we are pleased to highlight three individuals who, in addition to being outstanding ambassadors of all things nautical right here in our destination or through their international travels, have been extremely instrumental in nurturing the sense of community that seems to go hand in hand with those individuals who participate in these activities.

As in past editions, you will find our updated Events Calendar, which, along with our Resource Guide, will provide you with all the elements necessary to make the most of your water-related activities in the region. BANDERAS BAY

ARRIVING

• Banderas Bay’s two prominent headlands are Punta de Mita to the north and Cabo Corrientes to the south. Las Tres Marietas Islands at the western end of the bay welcome visitors arriving by water.

• Tides range up to six feet. Exercise extreme care when entering or departing Nuevo Vallarta, during low or minus tides, or when a strong swell is running. Call the harbor master on Channel 16 for vessels with a draft over six feet.

• The entrance to Marina Vallarta is well marked, with deep waters and a few obstacles. Watch out for cruise ships, tour boats, jets skis and party boats.

• The Cruising Fleet welcomes you and monitors VHF Channel 22.

• The Banderas Bay Morning Net operates Monday to Saturday at 8:30 am, also on Channel 22. It broadcasts vital info such as emergencies, HAM traffic, check-ins from around the bay, weather and tides, mail call, crew positions offered and needed, lost and found, general announcements and more. Experienced local volunteers provide this service.

ANCHORAGES/HARBORS

• Marina Vallarta is on the north side of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, between the Cruise Ship Terminal and the airport.

• Paradise Village Marina and the older Nuevo Vallarta Marina are five miles to the northwest of Puerto Vallarta in the state of Nayarit.

• Marina Riviera Nayarit at La Cruz is north of Nuevo Vallarta in the town of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

• The South Shore is characterized by deep anchorages formed by coastal mountains that plunge into the bay. Anchor close to shore with both bow and stern anchors for sufficient holding. Favorite anchorages include Las Animas and Yelapa.

• The North Shore, conversely, features low hills, dry weather, gentle sandy slopes and shallow anchorages in 15 - 30 feet of water with good holding. Favorite anchorages include El Anclote at Punta de Mita and outside the La Cruz Harbor.

• Almost anything you could desire is available – fabulous restaurants, incredible shopping, state-of-the-art medical and dental facilities, excellent public transportation, modern international airport, four marinas, everything from cosmopolitan to traditional Mexico, big city to fishing village, and cruise ship to panga.

DISCOVER BANDERAS BAY!

• Meaning “Bay of Flags,” legend has it that the name “Banderas Bay” originated when Francisco Cortez arrived here in 1524 and was greeted by natives carrying banners.

• This is the largest bay on the west coast of mainland Mexico, nearly 20 miles across and with 60 miles of coastline.

• With depths of up to two miles, it is one of the deepest bays in the world.

• Prevailing winds during cruising season from November to May are usually from the northwest. Breezes are typically light in morning and evening, becoming brisk in the afternoon and facilitating fabulous sailing conditions. Diurnal wind changes on the South Shore during afternoons and nights, created by convection changes in heating and cooling, can suddenly shift to the south or east.

• Banderas Bay is a beautiful bay fringed with sandy beaches, impressive mountains and lush tropic plants, including a plethora of palm trees.

• The waters teem with wildlife, including fish, sea turtles, giant manta rays and dolphins, as well as humpback whales between November and March.

• Channel entrance at 20°39.17 N/105°14.83 W.

• Clearly marked and well maintained, this busy harbor is large enough to accommodate cruise ships and a wide array of other craft.

• New outside sea buoy at 20°39.00 N/105°15.42 W.

• The magnetic heading from this buoy of 060 degrees lines you up with the channel entrance, framing Wal-Mart in the distance.

• With the lighted green buoys to port in the turn basin, bear left and proceed north to the marina, passing Opequimar boatyard and fuel dock on the left.

• Mexico’s largest marina, it’s five minutes south of Puerto Vallarta’s international airport.

• 350 boats moor here at various times throughout the year.

• The Marina malecón (boardwalk) is brimming with fine restaurants and shops. A spectacular waterfront view is available from numerous open-air restaurants and bars and atop the lighthouse bar, El Faro.

• Taxis and local buses are readily available on the main road.

• Opequimar boatyard has haul-out facilities,

skilled craftsmen, fuel dock, dry boat storage and yacht club with Internet.

• Nearby services include Zaragoza Marine, canvas shops, marine supply stores, hospitals, doctors, dentists, chiropractors, Internet services and storage facilities.

• Plaza Marina, just north of the marina, is home to ATMs, banks, McDonald’s, Commercial Mexicana supermarket and a variety of shops and services. Home Deport is north of the airport, with Sam’s and Wal-Mart five minutes south by bus or taxi. Galerias Vallarta next to Wal-Mart is an upscale mall.

• Fishing charter companies offer an opportunity to fish for dorado, marlin, sailfish and others.

• Tour operators sell tickets for a variety of land, sea and air adventures.

EXPERIENCE VALLARTA!

• The population of Puerto Vallarta is approximately 350,000.

• The Hotel Zone, stretching from the Marina to downtown, is home to a large concentration of resorts, restaurants, nightclubs, malls and shops, including Plaza Caracol, Plaza Genovesa and Office Depot, as well as a variety of auto part, hardware and paint shops.

• El Centro (downtown), south of the Hotel Zone, is high energy and full of action, offering dining, shopping, dancing, clubs and bars. Walk the famous Malecón to enjoy a memorable sunset and view the numerous original bronze sculptures. People-watching at its finest! Points of interest include free nightly shows at Los Arcos Amphitheater, Main Plaza, Naval Museum, Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and traditional markets. Enjoy a diverse variety of art galleries, restaurants and unique shops.

• The south side of El Centro, also known as Old Town or the Romantic Zone, is divided from El Centro by the Cuale River and the Isla Rio Cuale. This laid-back river island has a cultural center, museum, restaurants, shops and street vendors. The south side of El Centro is brimming with trendy restaurants and sidewalk cafes along cobblestone streets, giving it a romantic air. Olas Altas street is a hub of activity both day and night. At the south end of the Malecón, Playa Los Muertos, the city’s most popular beach, offers parasailing, jet skiing and banana boat rides.

• Frequently dredged to maintain minimum twelve-foot mean depth.

• Skippers are advised to call ahead to Paradise Village harbor master for prevailing conditions.

• Sail through the entrance channel into the estuary as you clear the breakwater. Marina Nuevo Vallarta is on right side of the estuary and Paradise Village Marina is straight ahead on the north.

• With economical slip fees, as some facilities are in disrepair, it is almost always full.

• Available onsite are a fuel dock, a shipyard with a 150-ton lift, 440V electricity and a pump-out.

• The Marina Riviera Nayarit at La Cruz Yacht Club offers concierge service; satellite TV; Wi-Fi; a business center; showers; sailing, surfing and other classes of interest; an amphitheater by the ocean; and social events such as weekly movie nights and potluck dinners.

• Dining and beverage options in the yacht club include the open-air Ikuai Restaurant, main-level VIP Lounge, Sky Bar Taikai and the takeout deli in the convenience store.

La Cruz Shipwreck

Although marked, sometimes it is easy to miss the shipwreck near La Cruz, which has been designated as a no anchorage area. The coordinates are 20º 44.786N/105º 22.406W. Inquiries should be directed to the port captain and La Cruz harbormaster.

EXPERIENCE LA CRUZ!

• This traditional fishing village about 15 miles north of Puerto Vallarta is home to a variety of restaurants featuring local and international cuisine, laundry facilities, hardware stores, a medical doctor, a veterinarian, banking facilities and ATM, bus and taxi service and a gas station with diesel.

• Walk the cobblestone streets for a slice of authentic Mexico. Enjoy an open-air street market on Wednesday mornings.

• There’s plenty of live music in the evenings at local restaurants and bars. Philo’s is a hub for the cruising community.

PUNTA DE MITA

ANCHORAGE

• A sandy bottom anchorage in front of the village of El Anclote provides protection from the prevailing northwest winds and swells.

• Good holding in 20 to 40 feet of water.

• A dinghy landing area, also popular for use by fishing pangas, is located in front of the thatchedroof restaurants.

Margarita’s Restaurant serves as headquarters for the casual Punta Mita Yacht and Surf Club from November to May. Located at Playa El Anclote 140, Punta Mita, Hector at (329) 291-5107 will provide further info.

AMENITIES ASHORE

• Located at the northern tip of Banderas Bay, the peninsula named Punta de Mita is home to the traditional towns of Emiliano Zapata and Corral del Risco, which offer a range of restaurants from tacos to sushi to world-class gourmet and everything in between.

• Services include grocery stores and new upscale shops, as well as boat, kayak and surfboard rentals.

• Deluxe accommodations are available at the Four Seasons Punta Mita and the St. Regis resort hotels.

• Two local 18-hole Jack Nicklaus golf courses in the area are set along the shores of the Pacific.

EXPERIENCE PUNTA DE MITA!

• This developing region comprises several developments with multi-million-dollar residences, commercial shops and other facilities. Plans are in place for resort hotel developments.

• The Marietas Islands, located just off shore in clear aquamarine waters, have been designated a UNESCO site and are teeming with wildlife including rare birds, dolphins and whales.

• Numerous surf spots can be reached by land or panga, and the area is also great for snorkeling, scuba diving and other water sports.

• Fabulous fishing grounds in the area include Las Islas Marietas, El Morro and Corbetena, which yield tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish and marlin. Travel 25 miles out to El Banco for a chance at catching 200-pound tuna and marlin weighing over a thousand pounds.

SOUTH SHORE ANCHORAGES

ANCHORAGES

• Flanked by the jungle-clad Sierra Madre Mountains that continue down into the bay, the shoreline provides numerous protected coves and anchorages.

• This shoreline is dramatic and picturesque, its combination of lush jungle, emerald waters, occasional thatched huts and sparse habitation resembling the exotic South Pacific or coastal Africa.

• The drop-off can put a vessel into water hundreds of feet deep very close to shore, so both a bow and stern anchor is a wise choice. Breezes can change direction overnight, with southerly winds appearing.

• Beach anchors are a common practice.

LOS ARCOS

Meaning “the arches,” this National Marine Park is a rock formation offering great snorkeling and diving, with deep drop-offs on the north. Explore underwater caves and tunnels but take care not to damage underwater habitat or remove anything, as this is a protected area.

BOCA DE TOMATLAN

• Located two miles west of Boca, it offers very accessible anchorages.

• This fishing village is just down the coast from Los Arcos National Marine Park. A mountain river empties into the bay, providing a protected harbor for the local panga fishermen.

• Cruising vessels rarely anchor here, due to the steep beach gradient; however, this is a great lunch stop during the calm weather from November to June and a place to practice bow and stern anchoring techniques with a stern anchor on the beach.

• Boca, the last village on the south easily accessible by car or bus, is a water-taxi station between villages and beaches on the South Shore.

• Traditional grocery stores and shops offer basic supplies.

• Featuring a white sandy beach, there’s a small pier for loading and unloading passengers and thatched-roof restaurants.

• Anchor close to shore in 10 to 20 feet of water over sand. Hire a water taxi to take you to and from shore for a small fee, or simply swim.

• Anchorage for one boat is available a half mile east of Las Animas at 20°30.61 N/105°20.35 W. Watch for submerged rocks in the area.

QUIMIXTO

• This oceanfront village with beach restaurants has a small river that leads up the valley to a waterfall. Rent a horse to ride up to enjoy the sights.

• The small anchorage can handle many boats, but watch for rocks close to the beach.

MAJAHUITAS

• This little white-sand beach and cove is home to a private all-inclusive resort.

• Not an overnight anchorage, it’s a great stop to enjoy the view and snorkel on the west side of the cove in underground tunnel formations just to the left.

PUNTA BOCA

(20°30.43 N/105°24.14 W)

• This tiny cove has anchorage for one vessel close in over sand.

• It’s perfect for a beach picnic and snorkeling.

YELAPA (20°29.47 N/105°26.60 W)

• This is the most well-known village on the South Shore.

• Good anchorages are available on the southeast side in 20 feet of water over sand. Water taxi service is available to the beach.

• Enjoy seafood restaurants, a traditional village and a hike or horseback ride upriver to a mountain waterfall. The Yelapa Yacht Club Restaurant has dancing on Saturday evenings, and the Verana Day Spa offers indulgent body treatments and organic food.

• The following remote anchorages west of Yelapa offer picturesque seclusion:

LOS CORRALES

W)

• This small, hidden bay lies a half mile east of the lighthouse (El Faro) at Cabo Corrientes.

• It provides protection from northwest winds and swells, and weather changes from the south.

• There’s a nice anchorage for one or two vessels on the west side of the bay at 20°24.56 N/105°40.70 W, situated behind a rock outcropping in front of two concrete shacks in 20 feet of water over sand.

• A small anchorage in front of beach homes to the northeast at 20°24.60 N/105°40.34 W provides a nice resting spot.

• Passages north and south of the Marietas Islands are used for vessels to enter Banderas Bay. Avoid sailing between islands; there are shallow reefs and seamounts just below the surface.

• Take great care if passing on the north side using the Punta de Mita approach (20°47.16 N/105°37.01 W), as there is a huge underwater rock hazard off Punta de Mita reported at 20°32.72 N/105°17.45 W, which is called “Mama Grande.”

• The safest approach to Las Marietas is to the south side of the largest island, below the cliffs at 20°41.44 N/ 105°34.46 W, in 20 feet of water over sandy spots.

• This federally protected UNESCO nature reserve is teeming with sea birds, including blue-footed boobies (endangered and found only here, the Sea of Cortez and the Galapagos Islands), yellow-footed boobies, pelicans, frigates and Heermann’s Gulls, just to name a few.

• This is a favorite snorkeling and diving location with a nice variety of reefs, tunnels, caves and walls.

• The area is frequented by manta rays, dolphins and whales (December to March).

SNORKELING KAYAKING

The Marietas Islands are an ideal location for a memorable snorkeling experience. This sanctuary for dolphins, sea turtles, friendly giant manta rays and masses of tropical fish and coral reefs provides wonderful snorkeling for the experienced and beginner alike. King angelfish, Panamic sergeant majors and Cortez chubs frequently approach snorkelers at Las Marietas. You’ll also see damselfish with their dark purple-blue body and bright neon blue spots. And if you’re lucky, you might spot a beautiful white and yellow fish with vertical black stripes – the elusive Moorish Idol.

If you are not on your own boat, many tour operators provide guided snorkeling tours to these and other locations around the bay. You can also rent a panga at Punta de Mita for a snorkeling experience at the nearby Las Marietas Islands.

Putting on a mask, snorkel and fins and going under the waters of Banderas Bay is a truly beautiful, unforgettable experience.

Kayaks are a wonderful way to see the ecosystems of Banderas Bay up close and personal. Some of the best places to kayak are Punta de Mita, Las Marietas Islands, the beautiful coves and small beaches on the South Shore and the extensive lagoon habitats of Nuevo Vallarta.

Kayaks can be rented right on the beach at Punta de Mita, and many tour operators provide kayaking excursions to some of the local reefs and islands around the bay and the beautiful ecosystem of the Nuevo Vallarta lagoons.

Los Arcos is one of Mexico’s most popular marine reserves. This cluster of granite islands rising out of the deep water in the southern part of Banderas Bay provides excellent day and night diving opportunities for divers of every level.

The Los Arcos National Marine Park attracts all kinds of tropical fish and a wide variety of marine life: angelfish, butterfly fish, damsels, parrot fish, needlefish, puffers, eagle rays, giant mantas, sea turtles and many other species of sea life.

El Bajo Reef is a 60-foot pinnacle reaching up to just six feet below the surface of Banderas Bay and is home to most of Los Arcos’ underwater life, including lobster, octopus and sea turtles. Night diving here is wonderful, as 60 percent of sea life species don’t come out during the day.

The spectacular undersea architecture at Las Marietas Federal Marine Reserve is a sanctuary for turtles, dolphins, mantas and scores of tropical fish that swim along the coral reefs. With so much going for it, it’s no wonder that both beginner and certified divers call the Marietas their favorite dive destination in Puerto Vallarta.

Six miles west of the Marietas Islands at the edge of Banderas Bay lies El Morro , a series of rock pinnacles extending above the surface of the Pacific Ocean. With depths of up to 150 feet, El Morro offers wall diving, caves and a 50-foot tunnel, giving experienced divers the chance to practice more-technical diving in a remote location.

Home to a great diversity of marine life, including lobsters, turtles, octopus, sharks, sea horses, dolphins, jacks, yellowtails, sailfish and the largest moray eels and manta rays you’ve ever seen, trips to this spectacular dive site are available to small groups of certified divers only.

Corbeteña is outside the bay, surrounded by the blue waters of the Pacific 40 miles from Puerto Vallarta. This remote island attracts all manner of sea life – and very few scuba divers. A profusion of manta rays, turtles, sharks and dolphins are native to these waters, and huge schools of jack tuna circle this tiny island in search of food.

Offering certified divers the chance to explore caves, arches and steep walls, Corbeteña is a great dive site with moderate currents and depths of up to 120 feet, with visibility ranging from 60 to 120 feet.

SAILING

Banderas Bay is the second largest bay in North America and the seventh largest in the world. The temperate tropical weather, gentle afternoon breezes and protected flat seas combine to make the bay a sailor’s dream come true.

Banderas Bay is rapidly becoming an internationally recognized mecca for some of the best sailing in the world. Cruisers, power and sail, have known about it for years and flock to the bay during the high season between November and June to stay for weeks, months or even years. Now, racing on the bay also has become popular, with many exciting regattas scheduled throughout the year, from the tiny Optimist-class sailboats for juniors to mega-sleds with professional crews.

The season kicks off December 3 - 5 with a fun race series appropriately named the Banderas Bay Blast. This three-day regatta pits the laid-back Punta Mita Yacht and Surf Club against the Vallarta Yacht Club to raise monies for local youth charities. The first leg is from Paradise Village to La Cruz for a party, libations, great food and entertainment at Philo’s Friday night. (Did we say this was going to be fun?) The second leg on Saturday is on to Punta Mita for another night of mayhem at the PMYSC with none other than Latitude 38’s own Richard Spindler. And Sunday is a spectacular spinnaker run back to Nuevo Vallarta in the annual Pirates For Pupils race, with awards and more celebration at the Vallarta Yacht Club. Anyone can join in as crew in this great season opener simply by providing a small donation for the charities involved.

December through March continues with lots of regattas and racing activities, including a WesMex Optimist Regatta, Marina del Rey to Puerto Vallarta Race, Vallarta Race Week and the granddaddy of all cruiser races, the Banderas Bay Regatta March 16 - 20.

Now in its 18th year and the signature event of the Vallarta Yacht Club, the Banderas Bay Regatta is especially tailored for cruising sailors and their boats of every make and rig. Race boats and multi-hulls join the fun, too. Each participating boat is custom-handicapped to account for sailing characteristics,

equipment and sail inventory. The warm calm waters of Banderas Bay provide the perfect setting for the race, with steady afternoon winds often around 15 knots providing a relaxed and fun five-day event where everyone can enjoy the best sailing venue on the Pacific coast of Mexico, along with live music and celebrations ashore. Besides regattas, there are fun races every Thursday afternoon for all sailboats, fondly called “Beer Cans.” In addition, there are club cruises to Punta de Mita and Las Animas with the Vallarta Yacht Club, and Dine and Dashes where participants race their boats from Paradise Village to La Cruz, run in for lunch at Philo’s, then race back to the Vallarta Yacht Club to claim bragging rights over a beer or two.

FISHING

Banderas Bay and the surrounding waters of the Pacific teem with sea life, providing some of the best sport fishing in the world, including dorado (mahi-mahi), sailfish, wahoo, giant tuna and monster marlin.

The fishing fleet welcomes you to the bay and has boats and trips customized to meet nearly everyone’s needs and budget, from small open fishing boats ideal for two people, called pangas , to large twindiesel-powered sport fishers for six people or more.

The fishing is so good here that three major international fishing tournaments are usually scheduled every year, bringing fishermen from all over the world to compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes!

There are many great fishing grounds in and around Banderas Bay. Inside the bay are a huge variety of fish: 50-pound tuna, dorado, sailfish, wahoo, snapper, grouper, roosterfish, mackerel, amberjack and dozens of other varieties. Outside the bay are two large rock formations, Corbeteña and El Banco, which provide record marlin and tuna catches.

Close in, between Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta to the Ameca River, there are snook and pargo.

The North Shore between La Cruz and Punta de Mita provides great sierra fishing, trolling small rapalas and small hoochie jigs close to the shore. Piedra Blanca, just west of La Cruz, and at Punta de Mita right in the anchorage are favorite spots for sierras.

The South Shore from Mismaloya to Punta Corrientes, where the water is deeper, offers tuna, dorado and bonita year round.

West of Yelapa skippers must maintain a good watch for rocks, especially in the area of Chimo, although the fishing is good here for bonita and pargo and, at times, tuna, dorado and sailfish.

Las Marietas Islands provide great scuba diving and, here where the bay meets the Pacific, mark the beginning of the trophy fishing area. In the protected banks of the Marietas Islands, you’ll find all the big game fish, such as marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado and wahoo.

El Morro is an excellent sport fishing destination. On the way to Corbeteña, this group of rock pinnacles makes for some of the most exciting scuba diving in Puerto Vallarta and also some of the best fishing. The barnaclecovered rocks attract tuna up to 50 pounds, sailfish, dorado, yellowtail and more. Many skippers elect to alternate between El Morro and El Faro if the fish are biting more in one location than another.

El Faro is the lighthouse at Cabo Corrientes, located on the far south end of Banderas Bay. It is a great place to catch sailfish, dorado, tuna and roosterfish.

Corbeteña (20°44’.12”N/105°50’.70”W), the large seamount rising out of the deep Pacific waters 33 miles west of Puerto Vallarta, offers prize trophy fish including marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo and dorado. The rock itself is always exposed and rises 25 feet above the surface, and is about 100 feet long. Extreme caution must be exercised as you fish this rock; give it a wide berth. There is a dangerous wash rock about 50 yards out at the west end.

El Banco (The Banks) (20°56’.89”N/106°01’.29”W), approximately 50 miles out from Puerto Vallarta, is the most celebrated of our fishing sites. The Banks are a series of underwater pinnacles, the highest spot rising to within 69 feet of the surface, with bait fish often working the surface above each pinnacle. The Banks is where the biggest and best trophy fish can be found, including monster marlin over 1,000 pounds, huge tuna to 400 pounds, giant sailfish, wahoo, dorado and more.

In addition to fabulous deep-sea sport fishing, Vallarta also boasts fresh-water fishing in the local mountains. Large bass can be found at nearby lake Cajon de Peña, where it’s possible to view birds and wildlife as well.

WHALE WATCHING

From November to March, humpback whales migrate to Banderas Bay to breed and instruct their young, making Vallarta one of the best places in the world to view humpback whales in their natural habitat.

• Choose authorized boats with experienced personnel.

• Boats without permits can stay looking at the same whale(s) for a maximum of 10 minutes at a distance of 80 meters.

PADDLEBOARDING

Whether you’re paddling along the shoreline, inhaling the exotic views, or a thrill-seeker ready to catch the big waves, Vallarta’s newest water sport, paddleboarding (or SUP: stand-up paddleboarding), is definitely worth considering. All that is needed is a paddleboard, a paddle and the ability to stand on your own two feet. Children as young as 6 and adults well into their 80s can learn the basics in less than 15 minutes and be on their way, a variety of boards available to suit everyone’s skill level. Advanced paddleboarders and surfers can paddle into the lineup, enjoying a bird’s eye view and the opportunity to handpick the best waves. SURFING

Surfing is hot here in Banderas Bay and outside along the rugged north coast from Punta de Mita to San Blas. Point breaks, reef breaks, beach breaks, jetty breaks and sand bars provide all types of swells, from glassy tubes and barrels for the hardcore surfer to gentle, soft-breaking swells perfect for beginners.

El Anclote at Punta de Mita features consistent, clean swells that wrap around the point and right into the beach, wonderful for beginners to learn the sport. And when the larger westerly swells come in from the Pacific, experienced surfers can enjoy incredibly long rides all the way from El Faro at the point into the beach.

There are good surfing spots at several point and reef breaks from Punta de Mita to La Cruz on the bay’s North Shore. Punta Burro is a right reef break with occasional barrels. Good rights can also be had nearby at Pools, Veneros and Destiladeras.

Farther down the North Shore toward Puerto Vallarta is a reef break at El Tizate and occasional beach breaks in front of the resorts at Nuevo Vallarta. South of Puerto Vallarta a panga water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan can take you to Quimixto , a point break for lefties during winter and spring.

Matanchen Bay at San Blas is a legendary spot for pioneer surfers. Stoner`s Point is the classic point, and Las Islitas has been known for the longest wave in the world – 5,700 feet – as certified by Guinness World Records. In spring when the huge swells appear from the Southern Hemisphere, it is possible this break can be ridden from Stoner`s Point through Islitas and surpass even previous world records for the longest ride.

Sayulita has a great wave reputation that has turned this little village into the “surf city” of Nayarit, drawing surfers from all over the world. The reef break can be soft and ideally suits beginners and very mellow long boarders who don’t mind the crowds.

San Pancho is a few miles farther north and enjoys beautiful tubes and barrels, especially at low tides in the morning hours before the wind pipes up. This sleepy little village has few crowds, a beautiful beach and hosted the Nayarit State Surfing Championship this year.

There are surf schools at Punta de Mita and Sayulita. Surfboard rentals are available right on the beach at both locations. In addition, there are several surf shops in the area to provide boards, clothing and accessories: Coral Reef Surf Shop in Bucerias, Accion Sports in La Cruz and Punta Mita, Mictlan Surf School in Punta de Mita and Sunset Surf Shop in Sayulita. EXTREME WATER SPORTS IN BANDERAS BAY

It was during the early part of the 20th century that 18-year-old Ralph Samuelson first attempted waterskiing on Lake Pepin, in Lake City, Minnesota. The sport quickly took off, making its first appearance in the Olympics in 1972. Not exclusive to lakes or other freshwater environments where the sport is primarily practiced, waterskiing and its many variations are making a splash in Banderas Bay.

“It’s best early in the mornings, when the ocean is very still,” comments ski instructor Farid Saade, who began wakeboarding in 1989 while working for several resorts throughout Mexico. Now in his late 40s, he works with beginners, taking them on his Paradise Village Marina-based boat and showing them the ropes. “Depending on their fitness level, most people can be up and on their feet in less than half a day.” Saade also coaches seasoned athletes in several modalities—waterskiing, slalom, wakeboarding, wakeskating—fine tuning their competitive edge.

“Keeping a competitive edge outside the water doesn’t hurt, either,” comments Juan Cibrian, a “frequent flyer” aboard Saade’s speedboat. Cibrian is the owner of Hotelito Rincon de la Ceiba (www.rincondelaceiba.com), a small, rustic hotel located lakeside at the Cajon de Peña reservoir, two hours south of Puerto Vallarta. “I’ve been training for some time now, hoping to make the sport an additional amenity for guests staying with us at the hotel. Plus, Cajon de Peña is also ideal for paddle surfing.”

Definitely not for the fainthearted, the many water sport variations available today offer varying levels of adrenaline for thrill-seeking Puerto Vallarta residents and visitors. Traditional waterskiing, inspired by its snow counterpart, involves two skis. The single-ski modality is known as slalom. Emerging from a combination of waterskiing and snowboarding, wakeboarding involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of the water and jumping by hitting the motorboat wake.

And while wakeboarding involves ski boots, water skating is an adaptation in which a double board is covered with grip tape and is practiced barefoot. For the ultimate rush, barefoot waterskiing requires faster speeds than regular skiing and involves holding on to a pole positioned on the side of the motorboat, holding on for dear life, while riding the water.

Finally, kite surfing or kiteboarding is a curious amalgam of wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing and paragliding that relies on a kite—and a windy day—to propel surfers, who seem to jump from wave to wave, flying momentarily in between, an increasingly common sight in nearby Bucerias, Riviera Nayarit.

Experienced water sport enthusiasts will likely find motorboats throughout the bay that are able to pull them as they enjoy Banderas Bay and its surrounding vistas. RODOLFO TREJO

Little did Rodolfo Trejo know how much his life would change when he accepted a managing position at the Vallarta Yacht Club some three years ago. “My job consists of making things happen,” he comments. But beyond the administrative tasks usually associated with many management jobs (payments, collections, hiring staff and so forth), Rudy, as he’s commonly known, thrives on making things happen for the active membership of the club, year round, according to the guidelines and expectations established by the board of directors. “I actually serve double duty as concierge, enjoying each opportunity I can to help members find ways to meet their needs, even if they do not relate to the club,” he adds, recalling a particular incident in which he assisted a member in finding a few Hobie Cats to rent, ultimately finding a source thanks to a couple of private owners and a nearby resort.

There are approximately 225 active family members in the Vallarta Yacht Club, out of which 70 or so live in the region all year. On any given day, a varying number of members walk in the door to enjoy the facilities, which include a swimming pool, a very affordable restaurant and a number of Optimist and Laser boats to enjoy, or simply to check email or use the shortwave and VHF radio equipment on site. In fact, it is not unusual to see up to 150 people at the club on any given day during the winter months, a time for many to catch up with friends or exchange tips on finding crew members for upcoming sailing trips. Given the fact that many own their own vessel, not to mention their devotion to all things nautical, an impressive 90 percent of the membership volunteers for the many projects the yacht club undertakes under Rudy’s supervision, such as the annual Banderas Bay Regatta and, this season, the Pan American Games.

Beyond the active membership, Rudy warmly greets guest cruisers with reciprocal privileges from participating yacht clubs around the world, and serves as a liaison between members and the local community at large. “Most large sailboats require up to 10 crew members. During Banderas Bay Regatta, we greet many locals who wish to volunteer, even without prior experience. The sailboat captains provide them with the necessary training to get their feet wet, pun intended, in nautical activities.”

Responsibilities aside, Rudy takes pride in having become an avid fisherman since he joined the club. And when not offshore, he enjoys dining out with his wife and daughter, and it’s not unusual to find him unwinding while playing three-cushion billiards at a local club.

Considering their less-than-favorable maiden voyage, it must be fate that Doug Danielson and his wife, Karen, took to sailing so passionately. The Southern California newlyweds had accepted an invitation to sail to Catalina Island, but the boat owner and the rest of the crew drank so heavily—not the Danielsons’ cup of tea—that the inexperienced couple had to sail the boat back on their own. Once on dry land, Doug and Karen said to one another, “We really liked this, but we need to do it on our own.” So they began taking lessons on a 27-foot sailboat, thus beginning the story of one of Banderas Bay’s most exemplary boating families, their three sons having inherited their passion for all things nautical.

A former architect, Doug’s love affair with Banderas Bay began in the ’70s when they first visited the region. It was Puerto Vallarta’s proximity to the ocean, along with the locals’ friendliness, that convinced them they would retire here. During the late ’80s, the US economy began a downward shift that forced Doug to close his firm. When Karen insisted he take advantage of his captain’s license and marina-design background, they began running charter sailing trips.

One of their first jobs involved sailing a boat from Costa Rica to Puerto Vallarta. Upon arrival, the sailboat owners flew home, and the Danielsons quickly became involved with the local boating community, living on the boat and staying at downtown Vallarta’s former Molino de Agua hotel from time to time “just for kicks.” Their fondness for the neighborhood remains to this day.

Doug, who had previously written articles for trade magazines, began writing short stories while convalescing from surgery in 2000. He now has two published novels, two manuscripts under consideration and two nonfiction books about cruising. This success has led to an ambassadorial duty, frequently fielding questions through his website, www.doug-danielson. com, from folks considering sailing to Puerto Vallarta or retiring here. “Not only is Puerto Vallarta the best place to get boat repair done,” he comments, “Puerto Vallarta has an international community like no other. There are arts, music and plenty of opportunities to participate in community projects. There are other great places in Mexico near the water, but they do not match Puerto Vallarta’s amenities.”

At 71 and having just celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary, Doug continues to enjoy “a good life,” sailing around the world and gathering ideas for books he’s yet to write. “Boating is something you never get tired of. And if you start your children in it as an activity while they’re young, it will teach them lessons about life that they could not learn anywhere else. There’s always a safe harbor at the end of the storm.”

Atrue pata salada—the moniker used to identify those who were born locally—Karla Moreno has always considered the ocean her second home. “I remember our mother constantly struggling to get us out of the water after long hours of weekend enjoyment snorkeling or collecting seashells,” she muses. A very accomplished and competitive sailor, Karla couldn’t have asked for a better upbringing. From her mother, an artist, she inherited a deeply rooted love for all things creative, artistic and, most importantly, Mexican. And from her father, a successful businessman who founded Puerto Vallarta’s first diving school back in the late ’60s, she inherited her love for the sea and its many recreational activities. “I learned how to scuba dive with a fire extinguisher that my father had adapted for me,” she recalls.

Interestingly enough, her first encounters with sails were not on a sailboat. Like many teenagers visiting or living in the area at the time, she was caught in the windsurfing boom that arrived in Banderas Bay in the mid- to late ’80s. A few years later, several sailing enthusiasts from Guadalajara, Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta decided to invest in a fleet of Catalina Capri 37s and promote one-design sailing races around the bay.

She joined a team in 1996 and was hooked on the spot, subsequently becoming captain of the Dreadnought Women Sailing Team, the firstever all-women sailing team in the country. Last year, the high-profile team travelled to Palma Mallorca to participate in the Regata Copa del Rey, arguably one of the most important regattas in the Mediterranean and worldwide. The team didn’t go unnoticed, becoming ambassadors not only of the sport but also of our destination, frequently fielding questions about Mexico in general and Puerto Vallarta in particular. Nowadays, they strive to maintain their competitive edge with constant training and participating in important sailing events throughout the world. Thrilled to see how kitesurfing has increasingly attracted young generations to Banderas Bay in the last five years, she is also pleased to see windsurfing making a comeback, enriching the diversity of nautical activities available throughout the area.

A tireless promoter of nautical and cultural activities, Karla firmly believes that cities throughout the world become famous thanks to their cultural events. Beyond her active participation in the local and international nautical community, she has produced a number of successful concerts, fashion shows and dance performance in Puerto Vallarta, with a few surprises to look forward to in 2012. “Banderas Bay is a natural destination for nautical tourism,” she affirms. “Sailors inherently love nature and its many wonders, and our destination provides a natural backdrop like no other place in all of Mexico. And when you consider that important competitions that take place locally attract large vessels with substantial crew, the economic benefits to the region are substantial.”

GETTING HERE

DOCUMENTATION

• All vessels must formally clear in and out of Mexico at their first and last port of entry with the port captain, immigration and customs, and also to pay the nominal fee.

• Foreign recreational vessels under 500 tons must go to immigration again just prior to sailing out of Mexico.

• Notify the port captain when sailing from port to port within Mexican waters. In some ports this may be done over the radio or at an authorized marina office; however, some ports still require written notification filed at the port captain’s office.

• There is no fee to clear in to a domestic port, and you do not need the services of a ship’s agent.

• Formally clear out of Mexico before sailing out of the country and obtain an international “ zarpe” to present upon entry to the next country. This has not been strictly enforced for US-registered vessels sailing back to the USA from Mexico.

• Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas have streamlined the process, with the port captain, immigration, customs and Banjercito (Armed Forces Bank) representatives all in one venue.

• International entry/exit clearances are available at the following ports: La Paz in the north, and Puerto Chiapas (formerly known as Puerto Madero), Puerto Salina Cruz and Puerto de Bahias de Huatulco in the south.

• Required international documents include vessel title, proof of insurance on the vessel, passport for each passenger and crew list (depacho).

• A zarpe (stamped international clearance for Mexico) will be issued by the port captain and must be kept on board. Present the zarpe at the last port of entry before leaving Mexico.

TEMPORARY IMPORT PERMIT (TIP)

• A Temporary Import Permit (TIP) is not required if you plan to leave Mexico with the vessel within the authorized timeframe on your tourist visa (up to 180 days), but it is required by marinas and haul-out facilities, and for importing repair parts.

• The TIP will be issued for the vessel by customs and is good for 10 or 20 years. This is a guarantee that you will not sell the boat in Mexico.

• A TIP is obtained with a small deposit and bond with Banjercito to be paid by credit card.

• Puerto Vallarta does not have a Banjercito facility and, therefore, no longer issues temporary import permits, so stop at one of the previously listed ports to obtain your TIP, if needed.

Captain Doug Danielson’s Advice

As an experienced local delivery skipper, Doug Danielson offers the following advice and information to make your sailing experience in Mexico hassle-free.

1) Once you have done your international check-in, navigating between Mexican ports will be relatively easy if you stay in authorized marinas. The new law relies on authorized marinas to act as honorary delegates of the port captain, and eventually they will be handling all the paperwork. No fees are required, and an immigration agent is not involved.

2) Unfortunately, in ports where there is no authorized marina or if you anchor out, you are required to notify the port captain in writing, and you must give the following information: name of vessel, flag, registration number, gross and net tonnage, last port or destination and trip itinerary, list of crew and any changes, and time of arrival and departure.

3) If you speak Spanish well, some port captains will take the information over the radio. However, it is the boat captain’s responsibility to properly report his vessel’s movements while in Mexico, and someone – port captain, vessel owner or marina – has to do the paperwork. To be safe, do it in writing.

RADIO

Radio is the primary means of gathering weather info while at sea.

• When coastal sailing in the USA, use VHF (very high frequency), which provides line-of-sight reception up to about 20 miles. Most VHF radios are already programmed to receive NOAA weather on Channels WX-1 or WX-2.

• When out of VHF range or outside US waters, use SSB (single sideband). SSB enables vessels to get weather faxes and voice weather broadcasts, send and receive email, listen to news when out of FM range and talk with cruisers who may be hundreds of miles away. FYI: Weather faxes require either a dedicated fax machine or a computer with adequate software to decode the fax via microphone input to the sound card or a high frequency modem.

• Marine bands and weather transmissions include USB (upper sideband), LSB (some HAM bands are lower sidebands) and AM radio stations.

• Some SSB transceivers will transmit on HAM in an emergency, but in other cases operators need a general class or HAM license to do it legally.

• WWV Fort Collins, CO, broadcasts Pacific high-seas weather warning at 10 minutes past the hour.

• Many SSB and HAM networks provide weather for Mexico and the eastern Pacific.

• Don Anderson of Summer Passage provides extensive weather briefings on numerous SSB and HAM networks.

INLAND TRIPS

Is it time for an adventure on land? Simply rent a car and hit the highway to discover some of the inland treasures. Or let someone else do the driving and travel by local bus or taxi. Most taxi drivers are happy to negotiate a flat rate, which may be surprisingly less than you expect, and many are able to speak some English. Talk to more than one taxi driver to negotiate the best price, then relax and enjoy the view.

NORTH TO TEQUILA

Highway 200 north from Vallarta passes many picturesque seaside towns and villages en route to colonial Compostela, where you can take the Guadalajara toll highway (cuota) to the town of Tequila.

• The surfers’ mecca of Sayulita is 13 miles north of the bay off Highway 200. Take surf lessons or enjoy watching others from beach restaurants and bars. A variety of restaurants offer cuisine from gourmet to budget, and there are many shops and services.

• San Francisco (known locally as San Pancho) is a few miles north of Sayulita. This laid-back, traditional town has an expansive beach that’s never crowded.

• Continue north to other beach towns, including Lo de Marcos, Los Ayala, Rincon de Guayabitos, La Peñita de Jaltemba and Chacala, each with its own flavor. Carry cash if traveling to these smaller centers, as not all have an ATM and most businesses don’t accept credit cards.

• To visit Tequila, take the scenic toll highway from Compostela through hilly countryside filled with rows of blue agave. Enjoy one of many distillery tours that include a tequila-tasting session and familiarize yourself with the products produced in house. A fun place to visit anytime, this little city truly comes alive during the annual Tequila Festival from November 30 to December 12, which includes parades, fireworks, charreadas (rodeos) and the world’s finest tequila available at open-air venues around the plaza each evening. Plan to stay overnight!

EAST TO TALPA DE ALLENDE

Take the Las Juntas turn-off from Highway 200 just north of the airport. Just past the town of Las Palmas, a newly constructed mountain highway makes this scenic drive to Talpa faster than ever, but take your time and spend a few hours or even the night in one of the towns along the way.

• Las Palmas is a small cowboy town with leather goods and working ranches. Horseback riding tours are available in the countryside.

• San Sebastian del Oeste originated in the 1600s and became a significant silver mining center. The last mine closed in 1921, and the former city is now a peaceful village with European-style architecture and stately haciendas, many renovated. Unique restaurants, shops and sights make this sleepy town a romantic overnight or weekend getaway.

• Mascota is a traditional town with a beautiful plaza and a majestic church honoring the Virgin of Dolores (Sorrows). Cobblestone streets, museums, restaurants, hacienda-style accommodations and traditional shops show an authentic Mexico. A bank and ATM are at the plaza.

• Talpa de Allende is the destination for pilgrims from all over Mexico who come to pay homage to the Virgin Rosario de Talpa. Don’t be surprised to see people walking on their knees from the town gates to the church, especially during important religious festivals. Talpa is also known for its coffee, guava candy and intricate chicle sculptures.

SOUTH TO EL TUITO

Highway 200 follows a scenic coastal route south for about 12 miles before heading inland toward the town of El Tuito.

• Look for villas on the hillside above and below the highway as you travel south from Puerto Vallarta through the neighborhood of Conchas Chinas, known as the Beverly Hills of Banderas Bay. Gaze southwest toward the ocean to spot the rock formation Los Arcos National Marine Park. This protected area is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving, as well as night roosting for numerous pelicans and other birds.

• Mismaloya is a small bay and resort area with beach restaurants open to the public. John Huston’s 1960s film Night of the Iguana, starring Richard Burton, was filmed here and spurred the influx of American tourism.

• Boca de Tomatlan is a fishing village on a deep, protected bay just past Mismaloya. This town is a hub of activity, as it is a water-taxi stop for pangas taking passengers and supplies to small coastal centers not easily accessible by land. Board a water taxi here to visit Las Animas, Quimixto, Majahuitas, Yelapa and even Puerto Vallarta.

• Chico’s Paradise restaurant just past Boca sits on boulders along the Tuito River. Enjoy a dip in one of the river pools if the water is not moving too quickly, or experience horseback riding in the Sierra Madre Mountains.

• Vallarta Botanical Gardens are located at Km 24 on Highway 200 south of Boca. This world-class facility on 25 acres includes over 3,000 species of plants, groomed hiking trails, the Plantation House Restaurant and Visitors’ Center, a rose garden, the Orchid House, a gift shop and a carnivorous plant collection. • El Tuito, farther south along Highway 200, is known for its weavers, who produce colorful tapestries, and also for the amazing bird-watching in the area. In the heart of cattle country, this is also a great place to buy fresh cheese.

BUSES

The bus is an inexpensive way to get around Puerto Vallarta and outlying areas. Please have pesos in small denominations ready when boarding the bus, as most trips to downtown from the airport and Marina Vallarta area are only $6.50 pesos, from Nuevo Vallarta Marina and Paradise Village $13 pesos, and from Punta Mita and La Cruz $23 pesos.

Any bus marked “El Centro” goes downtown. Any bus marked “Tunel” bypasses the city through the tunnels to the east, ending up in the South Side. Any bus marked “Marina Vallarta” turns into the marina area at the whale statue, does a loop to the hotels and back to Plaza Neptuno, then proceeds to downtown.

The silver ATM buses marked “Nuevo Vallarta” go to the greater Nuevo Vallarta area, marina and Paradise Village.

The Nuevo Vallarta buses stop only at the airport, Wal-Mart and Plaza Las Glorias and turn around at a terminal near the stadium. To go farther south, take any bus labeled “Centro” for $6.50 pesos. To return to Nuevo and Paradise Village, take any bus to the vicinity of the terminal, Plaza Las Glorias, Wal-Mart or the airport ($6.50 pesos), and board a “Nuevo Vallarta” bus ($13 pesos). Here are some important tips to keep in mind during the games (subject to last-minute changes):

The Pan American Games torch will begin its local journey in Paradise Village on Friday, October 7, carried through the premises by important representatives of the local nautical community, including Paradise Village owner Graziano Sovernigo, Paradise Village Harbor Master Dick Markie and Junior Olympics champion Paul Moreno, one of the first students to participate in the Vallarta Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program.

The torch will continue its journey through Puerto Vallarta, ending at the Malecón.

The awards ceremony will take place on Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón on October 23.

The Vallarta Yacht Club is the official host and hospitality center for all the sailing athletes. As such, access to the general public will be restricted during the competition dates.

Sailing competition results and additional information will be available at the Paradise Village Convention Center.
