The Impact of Mental Health Problems on UK Businesses

According to a 2022 report published by the London School of Economics and Political Science and Mental Health Foundation, mental health problems cost the UK economy somewhere in the region of £118 billion annually, equating to around 5% of the country’s GDP.

there is a sound economic case for investing in preventative measures. Indeed, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when the UK population’s mental health is particularly vulnerable, there is a need for both the health and social care sector and wider UK Government to take sustained, co-ordinated actions to protect the population’s mental health.
As David McDaid – London School of Economics Associate Professional Research Fellow in Health Policy and Health Economics– pointed out,
A review of workplace interventions suggested that every £1 spent on mental health support
programmes generated around £5 in long-term savings. In addition, research gathered from both within the UK and internationally highlights the potential of public health programmes created to empower more people to live well and prevent mental health problems, for example addressing issues such as bullying, perinatal depression and social isolation in older people.
