hen I was a toddler, I developed allergies to all dairy products. When my friends ordered ice cream cones, I quietly had to pass. I could never eat pizza at parties or chocolate at Halloween. I remember it being so difficult to understand (or to get people to understand) because I was the only person I knew with allergies (aside from my brother). What a difference a few decades makes. Today, up to 40 per cent of the population are sensitive to foreign proteins in the environment and an estimated nine per cent of children have food allergies. Of those, 38.7 per cent have a history of severe reactions. Experts have theories as to why the allergy rates have skyrocketed, however no one knows for sure why the rise has been so dramatic. “In Open Season on Allergies,” (page 46) Oksana Berda contemplates the effect our environment and diet have on allergies. The reality is no one knows, however taking a few precautions can’t hurt. Along with the rise in allergies has come an increase in how adaptive people are expected to be to allergies. Nut-free cupcakes are now the norm at birthday parties and I wouldn’t dream of packing a peanut butter sandwich in my child’s lunch. Recently, a Hamilton, Ontario woman filed a complaint against her daughter’s school with the Human Rights Tribunal and with the Chief Psychologist for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board claiming that her daughter’s elementary school discriminated against her by not taking her anaphylactic egg and dairy allergies seriously. I was never invited to a single party where there was a cheeseless pizza option. It was up to my mom to bring alternatives. Granted I wouldn’t have died if I ate dairy; I would have been very sick however. We learned to cope. While I’m not suggesting we start eating peanuts again in the cafeteria, discussion is now centering on whether allergy protection in schools should be a human right. There is no easy answer as to how far people should be expected to go to protect children with life-threatening allergies. Just as there is no easy answer to why so many of our kids now have these life-threatening afflictions. The important thing is that the discussion is there and hopefully, in time, we will have an answer to both.

Röhm with Steve Valentine, publicist for the Sofitel. The Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.

Röhm with daughter Easton August.

BEHIND THE SCENES In the days leading up to Christmas, much of eastern Canada was experiencing a deep freeze, with power outages across Ontario and Quebec due to a bitter ice storm. However, Los Angeles – the scene of our cover shoot – was the warmest place in North America with sunny skies and 27-degree temperatures.  Our cover model Elisabeth Röhm (co-star of the Oscar nominated American Hustle) breezed into the Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills with daughter Easton and dog Charlie in tow. Marveling at the hotel’s sophisticated ambience, Röhm got camera ready with the help of Viva’s glam team in a sumptuous room on a top floor of the 10-story hotel. Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills lent its elegant luxury and

dramatic décor to our cover shoot, while its see-and-be-seen excitement permeated every room. In between takes, everyone was treated to food from the Sofitel’s new contemporary French restaurant, Mediterranean at Estérel, which offers an incomparable dining experience (especially if you get to relax in the newly remodeled outdoor patio). With each and every wardrobe change, Röhm continued her transformation from working mom to Hollywood star, the turquoise designer dress being one of her favs.  “I just love the look of it all – the vintage gown with the patterned carpet,” said Röhm of the shot. “I don’t tend to glamourize when I’m busy being a mom, however I do love colour when I’m dressing for an event.”  SPRING 2014 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

HOW DO YOU DEFINE BALANCED LIVING?

ELISABETH RÖHM VIVA COVER GIRL AND STAR OF AMERICAN HUSTLE

Balanced living is about knowing and having perspective that there is grace, and that there is something working in the universe besides you and your daily experience. Whatever that is – be it energy, beliefs, something else – that’s what keeps me balanced. I always try to live with gratitude.  My daughter also keeps me real and reminds me of the bigger picture. For me, I try to do as many things as I can that give me perspective on life such as yoga, taking a walk, being with my family, just anything that gives me a buffer zone and takes away from being in the thick of it all. Then I feel more balanced and it helps me seize every day with a more level mindset.

SLEEK WITH A TWIST Times are constantly changing in the beauty world; yet in spite of the trends, models and starlets always return to past greats. The most popular looks, like this straight and sleek style, have their roots in the past. This chic and modern look dates back to 10th Century B.C. and the Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra. LASSICS REVISITED JUST BECAUSE A HAIRSTYLE IS OLD, DOESN’T MEAN IT HAS TO BE BORING. HERE’S HOW TO GIVE A MODERN TWIST TO YOUR FAVOURITE HAIRSTYLES.

MODEL: SARAH (VISION)

BY NANCY JAMBAZIAN | PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLY METZ

THE FOHAWK This fashionable rendition of the Mohawk is a style that owes its origins back to the 1700’s and the Mohawk American Indian tribe. In the original look, the sides of the head were shaved and the top stood straight up to represent warriors.

CREATE THE LOOK: Prep the front top middle section of your hair with a volumizing and texurizing hair powder massaged into the roots. Tease small sections of hair from the root up for a good solid foundation. Then, use a pick to pull up the teased hair to create more height. Spray with a buildable hair spray to secure in place. Take a bristle brush and smooth the edges to create the shape you want, then spray with a strong hold hair spray. For a modern finish, wear the sides slicked back or go softer with classic brushed back waves.

TIP: A great style to hide those pesky bangs you’ve been trying to grow out – just tease and throw them up.

THE CLASSICS REVISITED

PUMPED PONY Pair your pony with a pompadour for an instant classic update. The original classic style emerged in the 18th century from Madame de Pompadour. It’s an edgy and fun look that keeps your hair up off your face.

Shape your pomp with a smoothing brush and add a little matte paste to hold the style. Then twist the back end and pin it to the crown of your head. Set the look with a strong hold hair spray. If your hair is fine and needs more support, try bobby pinning a small “hair styling bun” to your scalp (you can cut the bun to make it as small as you need). Once it is secured, wrap sections of your hair around the styling piece and pin it in place with hairpins. If your hair isn’t long enough for a pony, try a clip-in pony for instant length with no commitment.

22

Hair2.indd 22

MODEL: BIANCA (NEXT)

CREATE THE LOOK: Prep your wet hair with a volumizing spray and blow dry upside down. Then pull the sides back into a pony leaving the top section out. Continue to dry small sections of the top part with a round brush pulling upward (or curl with a large iron); then backcomb all the sections to create more lift.

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / SPRING 2014

2/10/2014 10:14:50 AM

CREATE THE LOOK: Start by drying your hair with a bodybuilding mouse for better styling hold. Brush it smooth and create a deep side part. Then wrap oneor two-inch sections of hair, treated with a setting spray or a light hold hair spray, in hot rollers or around a curling iron. Use a medium-size roller or one-inch iron for tighter curls or big (jumbo) rollers or a 11⁄2-inch iron for larger curls and waves. Curl vertically (over and under) and then down both sides of your part in the front and from the crown down the back of your head. As soon as you curl each section, roll the curl up with your fingers and pin it close to your scalp.

OLD HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR This classic hairstyle has reigned throughout the decades, adorned by starlets including Ava Gardner, Veronica Lake and Marilyn Monroe. One of the reasons it’s so popular is that it looks good on any face shape and there are so many variations ranging from dramatic sculpted curls to soft subtle waves.

MODEL: BIANCA (NEXT)

When finished with your entire head, spray all the curls with a light hold hair spray. When the curls are completely cool (about 20 minutes) take them out. Gently brush through starting from underneath the hair, so as not to loosen too much of the curls. Also use your fingers to sculpt the direction and design you would like your style to take on. You can also tease under the curls to blend and create more fullness to your waves. Once you are happy with your creation, set with a strong hold hairspray and add a shine spray for a glossy finish.

Rejuvenate

and go beyond

Healthy Andrew Munaweera

Why?

Because the health threats from our modern lifestyle reduce the health and functioning of our complex and sensitive digestive system. What are these potent lifestyles threats that can compromise our health? • Constant stress from work, family and financial pressures • Rushed eating • Eating at irregular times • Suboptimal or poor food choices • Not enough sleep or poor quality sleep • Spending too much time using electronic gadgets such as tablets, smartphones, computers, televisions and e-readers • Exposure to environmental pollutants which accumulate in the nervous system tissue and body fat tissue over time • Presence of aggressive, undesirable microorganisms caused by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. These microorganisms can create extreme illness or even death. These health threats exert unwanted effects on our highly complex, active and sensitive digestive system. The human digestive system, or gut for short, consists of the mouth, the esophagus, the stomach, and the small and large intestines. Consider these amazing facts about your digestive system: • Average Length: 27 feet long (in an adult human) • Weight of the bacteria in your digestive tract: 3.5 pounds • Number of bacteria in your digestive tract: 100 trillion — or 10x the number of cells in your body • Surface area of your digestive tract: the size of a tennis court (if you laid it out completely) So how do you maintain and restore digestive health to protect yourself from our 21st century lifestyle threats? Simple…with a complete Rejuvenation System—one that leverages the power of probiotics.

Why probiotics?

Because you need gut care that goes beyond simply managing and fixing. You may have, or could have, real issues in need of resolution. If any of the above mentioned threats pertain to you, you can benefit from rejuvenation and starting with the gastrointestinal tract is your answer.

The Rejuvenation Solution

The rejuvenation solution starts with the rejuvenation of your digestive tract. Rejuvenation happens by shifting the quality and the quantity of the friendly bacteria living throughout the entire length of your digestive system. Let me introduce you to the concepts of rejuvenation and probiotics so you can better understand the importance of why you need to rejuvenate your digestive system with a

VIVAAPR2012_DOCKET_ADVERTISER_PRODUCT_FP.indd 1

probiotic system.

Rejuvenation

Rejuvenation means to restore to an original or new state; to make young or youthful again. True rejuvenation starts at the core where all health, healing and vitality begins – the human gastrointestinal system, or gut. More specifically, gut rejuvenation starts by focusing on enhancing the balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria along the entire length of your digestive tract.

Probiotics

There are good bacteria and bad bacteria in your digestive tract. Probiotics are the good, friendly bacteria. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines probiotics as “Live bacteria that may confer a health benefit on the host.” The quantity and quality of this microflora balance within your gut can either make you vital and alive or sick and dead. That’s why gut rejuvenation is so important – it quickly and powerfully enhances the quantity and quality of your friendly bacteria.

Rejuvenation: Go Beyond Healthy

Because of the complexity and power of the digestive system, rejuvenation is the only answer to truly improve gut health, gut function and move beyond just being healthy. By combining ancient health knowledge with modern scientific research, gut rejuvenation uses a unique and powerful probiotic system of friendly bacteria to gently transform the health and functioning of your entire digestive system. The results are immediate and noticeable.

So how do you spot an authentic probiotic rejuvenation system? Easy…for what they contain and what they don’t contain. The use of five core technologies allows us to difsuper strains of microorganisms proven safe 1. Select and effective in published human clinical trials (look

for Lactobacillus bulgaricus, LB-51 strain; Lactobacillus acidophilus, NAS strain; and Bifidobacterium bifidum, Malyoth strain)

must be grown appropriately so that they ex2. Strain press maximum probiotic properties

3. The use of an effective delivery system to help the bacteria survive passage through the harsh environments of hydrochloric acid and bile

during manufacture, distribution and 4. Refrigeration storage stated potency through a printed expiry date 5. Clearly for each strain of probiotic used packaging made of dark glass bottles and 6. Protective metal lids to maintain potency through protection of heat, moisture and damaging UV light

And, finally, here’s what an authentic probiotic rejuvenation system doesn’t contain:

1. Potency of microorganisms expressed by weight only (in milligrams, mg)

The Key to Rejuvenation: A Powerful Probiotic System

Only a complete and specialized probiotic system is powerful enough to rejuvenate your incredibly complex gut and protect it from your lifestyle. To understand why, you need to understand the difference between a probiotic rejuvenation system and conventional probiotics.

2. Two or more species listed on the label without potency expressed in colony forming unit (cfu) activity

3. Gas-producing fructooligosaccharides (FOS – a type of indigestible, fermentable prebiotic)

4. The claim of shelf-stability

Conventional Probiotics

Conventional probiotic products work fine for general health maintenance. Much research has been done over the past 50 years — and especially in the last 20 years on probiotics in many forms (capsules, cultured milk products, powders and drinks) and using many different types of probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium longum, to name just a few). You can recognize conventional probiotic products because they’ll usually contain multiple strains of bacteria on the label in specific “mixtures”. The better quality probiotic products will be found in the refrigerator.

Probiotic Rejuvenation System

In contrast, a probiotic rejuvenation system moves beyond these conventional probiotics because a probiotic rejuvenation system contains powerful technology designed to deliver the most potent probiotic microorganisms directly to target areas in your digestive tract.

DONE IN 60 EVEN THOUGH MOST MEN DON’T WANT TO ADMIT IT, THEIR SKIN NEEDS CARE TOO. HERE’S THE QUICK ROUTE TO GETTING HEALTHY, TOUCH-WORTHY SKIN. BY KAVITA SABHARWAL

A

s most women can attest, skincare is not always an easy task – which is why many men stick to the uncomplicated routine of wash and dry. Great skin is, however, possible in just seconds – if you stick to the basics and know what to do. Here’s how any man can have great skin, with minimal time and effort.

THE 60-SECOND SKIN-SAVING FORMULA

STEP 1: EXFOLIATE (30 SECONDS) “The best way to get better-looking skin is to exfoliate once a day using a non-foaming cleanser with mechanical beads, so you’re clean without being too dry,” says Dr. Lisa Kellett, M.D., a Toronto-based dermatologist. In the battle between mechanical and chemical exfoliants, Kellett believes most men stay away from chemicals because

they’re more complicated and don’t always fit into a man’s simple routine. They are also more likely to cause peeling and flaking. STEP 2: ANTI-AGING (20 SECONDS) Men are not immune to aging, so they need to use sun protection (of course this also protects from skin cancer) and a product with retinol. The latter is the only ingredient proven to reduce aging and boost collagen remodeling. Since men have hair-bearing areas on their faces, Kellett recommends products that are clear over creams, which can be greasy. For retinols, Kellett recommends a serum, again to keep the texture of the product light for bearded areas. As for sun care, a clear spray sun block (first sprayed into hands and then applied to the face) is the cleanest, easiest way for men to get the necessary sun protection. STEP 3: ANCE TREATMENT (10 SECONDS) For men who have acne, use a five per cent benzoyl peroxide-based product once or twice a day. Other products, such as facial pads soaked with salicylic acid or glycolic acid are good to use when a break up flares up on the back or chest area.

DON’T FORGET TO DO A MONTHLY CHECK FOR POTENTIALLY CANCEROUS MOLES. ANY CHANGES IN SIZE, SHAPE OR TEXTURE WARRANT A TRIP TO THE DOCTOR.

H E A LT H N E W S A NEW WEIGHT-LOSS SUPPLEMENT? A recent study published in Nutrition found that hydrolysate from spent brewer’s yeast may help reduce body weight and fat levels in obese men and women. The South Korean study found that after just 10 weeks of supplementation with the yeast hydrolysate, participants lost an average of 5.7 pounds compared with the control group who lost just 1.8 pounds. Why the dramatic results? It appears that yeast hydrolysate can induce a reduction in body weight and abdominal fat accumulation without adverse effects on lean body mass. They believe the weight loss is at least partially due to hydrolysate’s effect on appetite control in the central nervous system.

TAKE A STAND A Kansas State University study found that swapping sitting hours for standing ones throughout the day can improve health and quality of life while reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular and heart disease, stroke, diabetes and breast and colon cancer. The study looked at almost 200,000 men and women and found that sitting less is essential to improving overall health. Mini breaks throughout the day or even walking over to talk to a colleague instead of sending an email can have huge health implications.

YEAR-ROUND ALLERGIES Just because you make it through this spring without an allergy outbreak, doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Contrary to popular belief, seasonal allergies don’t just strike in the spring and fall. Even if the temperature is 25-degrees plus, your runny nose could be due to allergies. Some common allergy triggers during summer months include grass pollens and mold spores. In fact, a study by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology found that adult-onset allergies can often occur in the summer and often are mistaken for a cold. If symptoms are persistent, you should see a board-certified allergist for proper testing, diagnosis and treatment.

Research in Immunity & Ageing found that men’s immune systems age more rapidly than women’s. This may contribute to the fact that, on average, women tend to live longer than men. The Japanbased study found that the rate of decline in T cells and B cells is slower in women than men. There was also an age-dependent decrease in red blood cells for men, but not for women.

Q. I’VE HEARD A LOT OF NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT GLUTEN. SHOULD I ELIMINATE IT FROM MY DIET? A. In this contemporary era, more and more people are looking for ways to attain optimal health. Modifying one’s diet is often the simplest and most effective way to become healthy – and there has been a lot of recent talk concerning gluten. Specifically, many people want to know what gluten is and why it may be bad for them. Here’s a look at what exactly gluten is and how to decide if it has a place in your diet:

DEFINING GLUTEN

Gluten is a protein in wheat endosperm. In addition to nourishing plant embryos throughout their germination process, gluten affects dough elasticity and thereby plays a role in determining the chewiness of baked wheat goods. Gluten is comprised of two different types of proteins: gliadin and glutenin. Gliadin is a prolamin protein and glutenin is a glutelin protein. Although “true gluten” is often defined as pertaining specifically to wheat, it can be a part of other grains such as barley and rye since these types of grains have protein composites from glutelins and prolamins.

Although “true gluten” is often defined as pertaining specifically to wheat, it can be a part of other grains such as barley and rye.

SHOULD YOU ELIMINATE GLUTEN?

Gluten is not bad for everyone. When eaten by people who have celiac disease, however, gluten can cause several problematic illnesses. The bodies of people who have chronic digestive disorders view gluten as a malevolent invader and respond to its presence with an immune reaction that can damage the small intestine. Once this happens, the end result can be nutritional deficiencies and damage to the small intestine. If these conditions are not treated promptly and efficiently, they can generate intestinal cancers, osteoporosis and infertility. In addition to being problematic for people with celiac disease, gluten can be an issue for an estimated 20 million North Americans with gluten sensitivities. Symptoms can include bloating, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. EMBRACING A GLUTEN-FREE DIET

Upon recognizing that gluten may be a problem, you may want to move towards being gluten free. Some important foods to incorporate into glutenfree diets include fresh fruits and vegetables. These foods are calorically low and nutritionally dense. For these reasons, they contribute to good health by entailing weight maintenance as well as ensuring that the body attains the nutrition it needs to function optimally. In addition to enjoying fruits and vegetables, individuals who opt for a gluten-free diet can still enjoy the breads and cereals they used to eat. Simply look on your food labels and select items that are gluten-free. VM 32

UNLIKE WOMEN, MEN TEND TO SHY AWAY FROM YEARLY DOCTOR VISITS AND OFTEN WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT. WHEN IT COMES TO CANCER, HOWEVER, KNOWING WHEN TO VISIT DOC CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE. HERE’S WHAT EVERY GUY SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CANCER SCREENING.

THE TEST THAT COULD SAVE YOUR MAN’S LIFE

BY NANCY RIPTON

he relationship you have with your body is a lot like dating– especially when something’s not quite right. From the outside everything can look great – a hot and toned body, you’re having fun – on the inside, however, something could be wrong. “Listen to your body,” says Dr. Mike LeFevre, vice co-chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Don’t ignore something that feels wrong or out of place. Chances are it’s nothing. Many times, however, the only way to catch cancer early is by telling your doctor that something doesn’t feel right. In terms of regular screening, there are very few cancers that have good science to support it. Although the screening news may sound grim, there is some interesting science that offers hope for the future. Some of the most groundbreaking cancer research has been done out of the Washington University School of Medicine. A research team led by Dr. William Harbour (who has recently relocated to the University of Miami) has discovered a way to identify gene patterns in eye melanomas. By testing a series of 15 genes

T

34

cancer.indd 34

(which is small enough to be cost effective) the doctor can do a CSI-like test that will determine whether or not the cancer will stay in the eye (class 1) or spread to the liver (class 2). The test, which is now being used in most North American optical centers, allows doctors to be more proactive with class 2 patients. The ultimate goal is to develop a way to treat class 2 patients preemptively and to find other cancers where this form of molecular testing can also be done. “Ultimately, we’re hoping to make cancer a chronic disease rather than one you die from. Much like AIDS, the future may hold treatments that can allow people to lead a healthy, happy life through treatment,” says Harbour. THE BIG THREE FOR MEN

When men think of cancer, the focus is usually on the big three – prostate, lung and bowel. These three cancers account for over 50 per cent of all cancer in men. Here’s the low down on who’s most at risk, the screening tests available and who should get them.

PROSTATE CANCER The Numbers More than 241,000 new cases of

prostate cancer are expected this year in America, making prostate cancer the leading cancer in men. The good news is that the expected deaths are relatively low at 28,170. Risk Factor The more first-degree relatives you have with prostate cancer, the higher your risk. “If your father had prostate cancer, your risk triples,” says Dr. Alan Partin, Urologist-in-Chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital. “If your brother also had it, your risk quadruples.” African American men are also at an increased risk. Screening Tests Prostate screening involves a tandem rectal and blood test. If you’ve watched any medical drama on TV, chances are you’ve seen a dramatization of the first test. In a digital rectal exam, a doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel for hard or lumpy areas on the prostate through the rectal wall. Then, a blood test looks for the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. A high level of PSA could be an indicator of prostate cancer. The regularity of tests depends on the PSA levels. There are two new tests that have recently been approved by the FDA, however they are not yet widespread. A urine test looks for an RNA molecule and a prostate health index tests three types of PSA. Both tests work with a traditional PSA blood test to improve the accuracy of prostate screening and help prevent unnecessary biopsies. Should you get Screened? Despite some recent studies questioning the effect of PSA screening, the numbers seem to say screening is highly effective. “I’m 51 and when I started practicing, one in four men would get metastatic prostate cancer,” says Dr. Partin. “Now the numbers are one in 100. I credit the change with screening and early detection. If you’re high risk, you should start screening at age 40. Other men can start at 50. If nothing has been found by age 75, you can stop screening. How it Progresses If prostate cancer is allowed to progress to a point where it becomes highly aggressive, it moves into the bones around the spinal column and hips and the surrounding lymph nodes

LUNG CANCER The Numbers Lung cancer accounts for 16 per cent of all new

cancers. It’s also the most deadly cancer, with an estimated 160,340 American deaths this year. Risk Factor “Genetics don’t play a major role in developing lung cancer,” says Dr. LeFevre. Lung cancer is primarily caused by

exposure to substances that damage the lung cells such as high levels of air pollution, drinking water with high levels of arsenic, exposure to radiation, asbestos and other chemicals, and – above all – tobacco smoke. It’s estimated that smoking is responsible for 85 per cent of all lung cancers. “If you smoke, you are high risk,” says Dr. LeFevre. There is no safe level of smoke. The effects of smoking are cumulative, however – the more cigarettes you smoke a day and the longer you’ve been a smoker, the greater your risk of developing lung cancer. Screening Tests There isn’t a reliable way to screen for lung cancer. A doctor can listen for fluid around the lungs with a stethoscope or request a chest x-ray, however studies have shown that these basic tests do little to reduce lung cancer deaths. “Lung cancer is aggressive and spreads early, often before it’s detectable on chest x-rays,” says Dr. LeFevre. The good news is that things may be about to change. THE GREATEST Researchers are currently lookTHING YOU CAN DO ing at the possibility of testing TO REDUCE YOUR high-risk people with CT scans CANCER RISK IS STOP (an x-ray machine that takes SMOKING. It’s still a theory, however doctors may soon be able to detect a change in a specific small ribonucleic acid (microRNA) molecule that is often elevated in lung cancer patients. Should you get Screened? You shouldn’t be screened for lung cancer unless you have symptoms. Most people diagnosed with lung cancer are over the age of 65 and regular chest x-rays can expose you to unnecessary radiation and lead doctors to find noncancerous nodules that can lead to unnecessary, invasive testing. If you have symptoms such as persistent coughing, chest pain or shortness of breath you should, however, visit your doctor. How it Progresses Lung cancer usually spreads to the other lung and lymph nodes in the chest. It can also spread to the liver, brain or bone.

BOWEL CANCER The Numbers Colon and rectal cancers account for 13 per cent

of all cancers diagnosed each year. The good news is the number of people diagnosed has dropped dramatically since 1975 and the death rate has gone down by almost a half. Risk Factor Certain inherited genetic mutations such as Lynch syndrome or hereditary polyps can increase a person’s risk SPRING 2014 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

are still unsure if it is as accurate as a traditional colonoscopy so for now, most private insurers do not cover virtual colonoscopy. Should you get Screened? Screening is a huge factor in the reduction of deaths by colorectal cancer. “Everyone should get regular screening by age 50,” says Dr. LeFevre. “If you have had a first degree relative with colorectal cancer you should start screening 10 years prior to the age when they were diagnosed.” How it Progresses Bowel cancer can spread through the walls of the colon into the surrounding lymph nodes and eventually the liver.

GET SCREENED IF… Prostate Cancer

You need to urinate more often or have difficulty stopping or starting urine flow. Blood in the urine or semen, or pain during urination or ejaculation can also be a sign of prostate cancer. Lung Cancer

CANCER UNDER 40

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer is the fourth-leading killer of people ages 20-39. Certain cancers such as testicular, colorectal and thyroid are especially on the rise in this age group. Because younger patients are rarely screened, cancer is often diagnosed at a later stage. Despite this fact, Dr. LeFevre does not recommend regular screening except in certain genetic cases. Even though the rates are rising, cancer under 40 is still relatively rare.

36

You have a persistent cough, breathing problems or chest pain. Also look for a hoarse voice, coughing up blood, fatigue, unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite. Colon Cancer

You notice any change in your bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation, feeling that your bowel does not empty completely or narrow stools. Also look for blood in stools and general abdominal discomfort. Fatigue, unexplained weight loss and vomiting can also be symptoms of bowel cancer. VM

of colorectal cancer, however 75 per cent of tumors appear to be sporadic. Eating a high-fibre diet that’s low in red meat seems to reduce some risk – other reasons are unknown. Screening Tests There are three primary tests for bowel cancer: colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing. “They are all effective and I’m neutral as to which one to recommend,” says Dr. LeFevre. It’s a matter of talking to your doctor to determine which option is best for you. Colonoscopy is the most common and should be done every 10 years. “The transition from normal colon to one with a cancerous polyp is a slow process,” says Dr. LeFevre, regarding the low frequency of the exam. Once every 10 years is sufficient to find polyps and take them out before they become cancerous. The downside to a colonoscopy is that the preparation is arduous and requires “cleaning out” the colon through drinking gallons of liquid that can cause cramping. Patients are sedated for the actual procedure to prevent discomfort, and in rare instances complications such as tears can occur. A sigmoidoscopy is easier and more low-risk than a full colonoscopy. It covers only the first third of the colon and tests should be done every five years. If a polyp is found, a full colonoscopy is then done. The last option is a yearly stool test. It is a high sensitivity test for blood and if anything is found, a colonoscopy is then done. It’s not nearly as obtrusive as a colonoscopy, however it can be challenging for some men to remember to do it every year. In the future, a virtual colonoscopy may be possible. Researchers will soon be able to take a three-dimensional image of the colon and rectum. At this point, however, investigators

estosterone plays an essential role in the sexual health of both men and women. Although lower than optimal testosterone levels are not the only factor connected to low sex drive, testosterone along with the balance of other hormones are very important in understanding individual concerns with libido. Where women have larger amounts of estrogens to keep a spring in their step, men rely more on testosterone to maintain their mojo. Although there are several supplements that may increase testosterone levels and improve sexual health in men, lifestyle still plays the largest role in maintaining a healthy sex drive and can help support testosterone production well into later life. THE HORMONE CONNECTION Low testosterone (or low T) has been connected to many different physical and psychological health concerns in men.

DOWN

Notably, low T is more commonly found in men with depression, poor focus and concentration, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and obesity. Didehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is another important steroid hormone related to sexual health. DHEA is proBY BRIAN DAVIES duced by the adrenal glands, providing a readily available supply of pre-hormones that our bodies can convert into testosterone or estrogen. Because our adrenal glands respond to both physical and emotional stress, DHEA, along with testosterone and estrogen production can be dramatically affected by our stress levels, which can adversely impact our sexual health. Cortisol (the stress hormone) also plays a major role in sexual health and feelings of well-being. Excessive stress plays a large role in libido for men, as healthy erectile function relies on being both relaxed and excited at the same time. With high levels of stress or anxiety, erectile dysfunction is much more common. According to an article in Andrologia, lifestyle factors that reduce subjective feelings of stress and anxiety have been shown to improve sexual function and libido. Basically, reduce your stress, increase your libido. Clinically, it is very surprising how many men I have come across with lower than optimal levels of testosterone and/or DHEA directly correlated to their decreased libido. Many men surprisingly have higher than optimal levels of serum estradiol, the main estrogen in our bodies. High levels of cortisol are also frequently seen in both men and women with decreased libido. When it comes to hormone health, it’s all about balance. If sex drive is an issue, have serum DHEA-S, total testosterone and estradiol levels checked. For women this is a great way to check in on your adrenal function, since low T or DHEA would be a sign of physical or emotional burn out, low energy, poor focus, low sex drive, high anxiety, depression or even risks of autoimmune disease and osteoporosis. In men, low DHEA-S and estrogen are signs of adrenal exhaustion, where low testosterone and higher serum estrodial can result in depression, lack of sex drive and erectile dysfunction.

WHEN TIMES ARE

DOWN THE INSULIN LIBIDO CONNECTION Although there is a natural decline in testosterone and libido starting around the age of 30, one of the biggest factors that can prematurely reduce testosterone levels in men is excess body fat and increased insulin levels. Insulin is the hormone that regulates blood sugar, and increased insulin is the cause of adult-onset diabetes, however high insulin levels can also increase body fat. Within fat cells, there is a specific enzyme called aromatase. The aromatase enzyme is what converts testosterone into estradiol that can lead to suboptimal levels of testosterone. It is important to understand the connection between obesity and testosterone because there are several natural remedies that have been shown to block or reduce aromatase activity. Reducing aromatase activity can help to naturally increase testosterone levels in men. Healthy lifestyle practices play one of the largest roles in maintaining a healthy sex drive and hormone profile in aging men. Regular exercise that includes both weight training and interval training can dramatically lower insulin levels and reduce body fat. This, in turn, reduces aromatase levels and leads to increased lean body mass (muscle) as testosterone levels start to rise. Exercise helps men feel better and, along with a healthy diet, can increase testosterone and DHEA levels, while reducing cortisol and insulin naturally.

Diet is very important in maintaining sexual health, with a particular focus on reducing caloric intake. Excess calories or overeating refined sugar and starch can increase insulin and cortisol levels. Overconsumption of starch and sugar can also lead to problems with controlling blood sugar, which can increase feelings of anxiety. Along with excessive alcohol consumption, these types of calories can lead to obesity. In turn, a healthy diet should focus on vegetables, low-glycemic fruits, such as apples and berries, along with lean proteins and healthy fats. Consider following a Mediterranean-style diet while limiting calories to help boost libido, testosterone and mood.

NATURAL LIBIDO ENHANCERS There are many specific nutrients and herbs that can promote sexual health in men. Low levels of zinc and magnesium are commonly found in people with low libido and sexual dysfunction. Zinc and magnesium can help regulate testosterone metabolism and can improve erectile function. The amino acids L-arginine and L-carnitine have been shown to improve erectile function by increasing penile blood supply. Mushrooms and green tea have been found to reduce aromatase activity, which can increase testosterone levels, while reducing estrogen. Maca root, panax ginseng, horny goat weed and yohimbe are all herbs that can increase feelings of sexual desire in men with low libido. Although the exact causes of decreased libido in men may be SIMPLE LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO difficult to identify, hormone testing is a great place to start. NATURE’S

FLU FIGHTERS BY DR. JOYCE JOHNSON, ND

IN ORDER TO WARD OFF ILLNESS, YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM NEEDS TO FUNCTION AT AN OPTIMAL LEVEL. HERE’S HOW NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS, AND A FEW DIETARY CHANGES, CAN HELP KEEP YOU HEALTHY.

IMMUNITY BUILDERS Do you suffer from fatigue, lethargy, repeated infections, slow wound healing, allergies, thrush, colds and/or flu? These are all signs that your body’s immune system is not functioning at an optimal level. A healthy adult should not suffer from more than two colds a year. If you find yourself succumbing more often than that, you need to give your immune system more dietary support. Immunity starts at a cellular level. The immune system involves your skin, intestines, nasal mucosa, blood, lymph, white blood cells, stem cells, b-cells and many other organs and tissues. Factors that impair immune function include: nutrient deficiencies, contaminated air, water and food, unhealthy lifestyles and too much exposure to harmful microbes. The immune system is the body’s chief defense system, designed to protect the body against germs, viruses, bacteria, and other invaders. A weakened immune system leaves the body vulnerable to virtually every type of illness and disease, especially when you move between climates, countries and time zones. Natural products that support healthy immune system function are popular for good reasons. They are primarily formulated to prevent (although some also treat symptoms) and they seldom have any unpleasant side effects such as drowsiness. Many of these immune system dietary supplements have been scientifically proven to improve white blood cell counts, increase the body’s resistance to infection and speed recovery when infection does occur. Here are the heavy hitters when it comes to boosting immunity: 42

ECHINACEA

Echinacea (also known as Purple Coneflower) is the best-selling herbal immune remedy. In Germany, it is prescribed by doctors and distributed by pharmacists to help fight colds and flu. This herb is available as a dietary supplement and is used to prevent or decrease the duration of the common cold. Does Echinacea work? Some studies show mixed results, however a meta-analysis of several studies determined that taking Echinacea supplements can be effective. This popular herb works by increasing the numbers and the activity of white blood cells. It also increases the production of interferon, a chemical that is critical to the immune system response. The key to effective herbal remedies is choosing a standardized product, preferably one that has been clinically tested, and using enough of it at the first signs of a cold. Whether it is in the form of a tincture, capsules or soft gels, you should take Echinacea three to five times a day for the first three days as soon as you feel symptoms coming on. Then, continue three times daily until symptoms resolve. For prevention, Echinacea is safe to take on a daily basis.

PHOTO: DREAMSTIME.COM

Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away? Well, sort of. Diet can have a huge impact on the way your immune system functions. While an apple is a healthy start, it takes more than a piece of fruit to keep your immune system functioning at an optimal level. Here’s how to protect your immune system and ward off illness this year:

TRY: A. VOGEL ECHINAFORCE EXTRA STRENGTH HOT DRINK

Made from elderberries and rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and Echinacea, this hot drink will help ease symptoms of the common cold. Just add one teaspoon to hot water and take three times daily until your symptoms disappear. (100ml, $12.99)

NATURE’S FLU FIGHTERS

GARLIC

The use of allicin, the primary active agent generated by garlic, for general wellbeing is on the increase and its role as an antioxidant has been widely investigated.

VITAMIN E

Another important antioxidant is vitamin E. This nutrient supports cellular health to help slow aging, fight against heart disease and cancer, and strengthen the body against infection. People who eat foods rich in vitamin E, or take supplements, have an added weapon against bacteria and viruses.

OREGANO OIL

Oregano oil is a potent natural antibiotic and antiviral. When five or six drops are put in a glass of water and gargled, it can stop a sore throat in its tracks. Five or six drops in a glass of water, swallowed can help kill flu or infection in under 24 hours if taken at the first sign of illness. You can also try a drop or two under your tongue.

CAROTENOIDS

Carotenoids are antioxidants that strengthen immunity by producing lymphocytes, infection-fighting cells. The best sources of carotenoids are red, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, cantaloupes and pumpkin, as well as leafy green foods. The four important carotenoids are beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin – all provide excellent immune system support. OPTIMIZE YOUR DIET FOR GOOD HEALTH Poor nutrition is the most common cause of a weakened immune response. Foods that are good natural sources of the immuneboosting antioxidants include: kiwifruit (which contains more vitamin C than oranges), Chinese cabbage (an excellent source of vitamin A), and avocado (known as nature’s super food because it provides the optimum healthy ratio of fat, carbohydrate, protein and vitamin E). You should also step up your intake of dietary zinc by eating more seafood, eggs, turkey, and pumpkin seeds. EATING BY COLOURS There’s no one food that stands out as being THE most important for your immune system. It’s your diet as a whole that matters. However, as usual, it’s those dietary big guns – fruits and vegetables – that can make the greatest difference. Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals that help your immune system stay fighting fit. Try to include a wide colour spectrum in your diet to maximize the range of nutrients you get. DAILY PROTEIN The importance of getting adequate protein for a healthy immune system is often overlooked. No immune system can function at an optimal level without it. Vegetarian? Get your protein from beans, quinoa and tofu. VM

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES TO SUPPORT IMMUNITY

TRY: SUNKIST VITAMIN C

Each tablet is packed with 500 milligrams of vitamin C and the orange-scented vitamins are easy to swallow. Sunkist vitamins are made with 100 per cent natural ingredients, no artificial colours and are gluten free. (120 tablets, $6.99)

TRY: QUANTUM HEALTH THERA ZINC ELDERBERRY LOZENGES

Research from Europe suggests that Elderberry and zinc provide the nutritional support your body craves when warding off illness. These pocketsize lozenges are the ideal on-the-go flu fighters. (14 lozenges, $2.49)

PROBIOTICS

These “friendly bacteria” help keep your digestive tract healthy and boost immunity. Probiotics alter the balance of the microflora in the gut by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria and favouring those that aid digestion and help fight infection. Research supports the use of probiotics for reducing the symptoms and duration of the common cold. Probiotics are frequently used to repopulate the digestive tract after a course of antibiotics has upset this balance. Reports show that probiotics can prevent up to 50 per cent of infections that are common after antibiotic use.

ZINC

Zinc is a mineral that boosts immunity. It is often found as an ingredient in lozenges to help soothe a sore throat. Zinc mineral helps increase the number of white blood cells to fight infections. One meta-analysis compared several studies on zinc and found that taking zinc within 24 hours after the start of a cold could help to reduce symptoms.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is one of nature’s strongest antioxidants, naturally boosting your immune system. This water-soluble vitamin cannot be stored in your body, so you must rely on regular dietary intake. Good dietary sources of vitamin C include: citrus fruits, green peppers, cantaloupes and broccoli. However, even a kiwifruit (which is exceptionally high in vitamin C) only provides 75 to 85 milligrams of Vitamin C; an orange provides 70. If you’re trying to ward off illness, you should take a supplement. To boost your immune system and ward off winter infections, take 1,000 milligrams a day. If you are a smoker, you should take more vitamin C because smoking depletes vitamin C reserves more rapidly.

As a child, I was fortunate to spend a lot of time outside in my mom’s garden or on a friend’s family farm. I ate loads of fresh produce and drank unpasteurized milk. I’ve never had allergies and have never given it much thought until recently when I learned just how much allergies are on the rise. Between 1997 and 2011, food allergies among children have increased 50 per cent. Today, two million Canadians suffer from asthma alone, and asthma is responsible for 350 deaths each year. While no one knows for sure what causes allergies, a number of recent studies show us that the environment and the foods we eat likely play a role.

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT LIFESTYLE AND DIET MAY PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN WHETHER OR NOT YOU DEVELOP ALLERGIES. HERE’S WHY EVERYTHING FROM WHAT YOU DRINK TO WHERE YOU LIVE MAY BE CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR FAMILY’S ALLERGY RISK.

Is my natural upbringing responsible for my allergy-free life, or would I have been okay without the great outdoors and a diet packed with processed foods? While I’ll never know for sure, studies do show us that food and lifestyle may make a difference. Here’s what you need to know about reducing your family’s allergy risk.

WHY WHERE YOU LIVE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

kids that live on a farm with more direct interaction with bacteria in the bedroom are less likely to develop allergies than the city kids with much cleaner rooms. It’s possible we may have over-medicated our surroundings, leaving our bodies less able to respond to pathogens. We are taught (especially in the city) to sterilize everything, stripping ourselves of our natural genetic defenses. In the simplest terms, our bodies have, over time, become so clean that the organism is absolutely paranoid. It responds negatively to everything, even the good bacteria that once was welcome and is still needed.

The European PARSIFAL (Prevention of Allergy-Risk Factors for Sensitization in Children Related to Farming and Anthroposophic Lifestyle) study compared the bedrooms of city kids versus farm kids. t’s that time of year again. The trees are budding, flowers are blooming, the grass is turning green, and the sun is shining. Spring is in the air; and your seasonal allergies are keeping you indoors.    Did you know that taking certain vitamins can help you deal with common allergy symptoms? While vitamins can’t cure or prevent allergies, they can boost immunity and act as an anti-inflammatory, thereby reducing the severity of seasonal allergies. Here are five vitamins that can help provide some relief this season:

1

VIVA RECOMMENDS FLORA MULTI CAPS (90 CAPSULES, $31.09)

VITAMIN A

Vitamin A improves your immunity because it promotes healthy mucous membranes, which keep bacteria out of the body and help defend your body against the sniffles. Great food sources of vitamin A include: milk, cheese, spinach, sweet potato, carrots and kale.

2

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C gets huge marks for its antioxidant properties, boosting your immune system and helping to reduce inflammation. Vitamin C also reduces histamine release, which is part of many allergic reactions. Vitamin C works best in conjunction with Vitamin E. You can get your daily Vitamin C dose in fruits like papaya, kiwi, strawberries, and in greens such as kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and even red peppers.

3

VITAMIN E

Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant. Research shows that it may be effective in suppressing allergic reactions while also building your immune system and protecting you against viruses. Vitamin E is found naturally in dark leafy green vegetables such as spinach, and also sunflower seeds, almonds and papaya.

SAVING GRACE

HOW LONG-TIME ALLERGY SUFFERER DEBRA MESSING FINALLY FOUND RELIEF BY BONNIE SIEGLER

w

e may always think of Debra Messing as Grace Adler from the beloved television sitcom Will & Grace. Messing, however, has moved on, and her life as a mom (to nine-year-old Roman) and actor is very full, hectic and happy. Besides just wrapping up an independent film and rehearsing for Outside Mullingar, debuting on Broadway soon, Messing is looking to produce. And she has to do all of this while keeping her tough-to-tame allergies in check. Messing’s allergies first began to manifest themselves in her late teens with bad sore throats. “Everyone thought I had strep throat all the time because my throat would start closing up,” she recalls. At 21, Messing underwent rigorous testing and found out she was allergic to mold, mildew, flowers, down, wool, cashmere, and certain foods. 52

MESSING’S GO-TO ALLERGY AID “I’ve tried many relief medicines and they either made me sleepy or edgy or didn’t last very long. The severe reactions would take away my self-confidence because I would be worrying about allergies and suddenly my eyes would start weeping and I’d get sneezy,” says Messing. Messing has now started taking Zyrtec and finds it’s the only thing that works for her. “I can now go to the park for more than 15 minutes and play with Roman,” she says. “Finding something that helps my symptoms, gives me the confidence to plan and know that I can participate in the life I want to build for myself was a game changer.” ALLERGIES AND BEAUTY Harsh allergies can wreak havoc on anyone’s beauty – even someone as gorgeous as Messing. “I always carry tiny portable, single-dose saline eye drops with me,” she says. If her eyes get itchy, she can use them to wash away any pollen or dust that might have gotten into her eyes. Messing has also found that keeping makeup brushes very clean is important in avoiding allergy attacks. “The brushes get so close to your eyes so it’s important to be vigilant in keeping your makeup brushes clean,” says Messing. Lastly, Messing warns to stay away from makeup, skincare or hair care products that have heavy fragrances. “I only use fragrance-free products and this has really made a difference for me,” says Messing. Let’s just say I’ve absolutely had peaks and valleys in my life,” says actor Tasha Smith, currently starring in Tyler Perry’s TV series For Better or Worse. “I believe that obstacles are not there to take us out; rather to show us how strong we are as human beings. I’m stronger today than I was yesterday because I haven’t been tapped out in life. Any person can remember the hard things that they’ve gone through, however we’re probably more courageous and encouraged about the future because of the victories we’ve had in our past.” Tasha, and her identical twin, Sidra, grew up in Camden, New Jersey, raised by a single mother. And to say that things weren’t always easy is an understatement. The actor has been open about her past drug use and victory over it. Now married to Keith Douglas, and stepmom to his five kids, she’s found her happy place in life. Through all her ups and downs, Smith’s spirituality is what has made her a survivor. “My ability to overcome has given me resilience and the ability to snap back,” says Smith. Even with that, however, everyone has to have a foundation or source of faith. “One of the greatest things we can have as human beings is the ability to have faith in ourselves, in our future and in our purpose,” says Smith. WEIGHTY ISSUES

“I like to be around 140 pounds and I’m not there right this second and it makes me really mad,” laughs Smith. “It’s not for lack of trying.” The 42-year-old enjoys and looks forward to working out with her personal trainer, Scott Barker, and especially likes boxing. “That’s one of my favorite workouts,” she says. “It’s fun, energetic and it keeps me alert and aware. I love the way I feel afterwards.” Smith also likes to take her workouts outdoors and enjoy a little solitude. “I love hiking in the different canyons near my 54

home in Los Angeles. It’s a nice visual experience and good exercise,” says Smith. The actor also eats healthy and starts off each day with a nutritionally packed shake made with spinach, kale and berries. The actor doesn’t drink dairy so if she wants her smoothies a little creamier, she’ll add almond milk. She also keeps a hard-boiled egg on hand for a healthy on-the-go snack. She admits that she’s not always perfect, however. “I love Häagen-Dazs ice cream, Red Vines and popcorn,” she says. “I don’t even say, ‘Let’s go to the movies,’ I say, ‘Let’s go get popcorn!’”

A REAL-LIFE PRINCESS

For Smith, her life now is like a fairy tale come true. In addition to acting, taking care of her busy house, working out, and running her Tasha Smith Actors Workshop, she recently launched her own perfume line called US. “It’s a citrus-y, sexy fragrance. There’s the citrus part and then there’s the floral scents for sexiness. Aromas and fragrances can set a mood for me and citrus makes me feel fresh and vibrant – and sexy,” says Smith. “I’m living a truly blessed and balanced life, which means I’m taking care of myself along with everyone else,” says

ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS WE CAN HAVE AS HUMAN BEINGS IS THE ABILITY TO HAVE FAITH IN OURSELVES, IN OUR FUTURE AND IN OUR PURPOSE.

Smith. “You’ve got to give back to yourself as much as you give back to everyone and everything else. Just keeping myself in an inspirational place keeps me in a happy place. I don’t like being unhappy. If I’m leaving the house fearless, courageous and inspired, I’m gonna win – I can’t be stopped.” VM

ctor Elisabeth Röhm is the first to admit that she was raised in an unconventional atmosphere. Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, Röhm moved with her Americanborn parents to New York City before her first birthday. An equestrian enthusiast, Röhm began competing at the age of five along with some friends. Although this may not sound too unorthodox, Röhm swears: “I was raised really unconventionally. Both my parents had European backgrounds and became meditators and yogis, which is how they met. That is where I get my spiritual background and strong mind/body connection.” MAKE EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE COUNT “I’m not a gym rat at all,” says the 40-year-old actor who now resides in a Los Angeles beachside community with daughter Easton, 5, and fiancé/entrepreneur, Ron Wooster. “First of all, I don’t have much extra time, so my exercise has to be a mind/ body experience so I’m multi-tasking. I primarily do yoga. It’s the one time when I feel no guilt in having time for myself.” Recognizing the correlation between fitness and general wellbeing, Röhm says that yoga gives her peace in addition to getting fit so it’s a “double whammy.” The breathing part of exercise and movement is so important to Röhm. “I get much more out of doing yoga, or taking a walk or bike ride than I do out of lifting weights.” Her mother’s teachings have given Röhm a strong background in transcendental meditation, proper breathing and meditative techniques. Although Röhm is as strapped for time as any working mom, she makes time for 20 minutes of transcendental meditation every single day. “I think when things get chaotic in my life – and especially in the business I’m in – if you don’t know how to get back to a place of quiet, you end up internalizing or reacting to every single thing too much and it can get painful,” says Röhm.

GRATITUDE IS A BIG PART OF STAYING FOCUSED AND RELAXED. AS SOMEBODY I ADMIRE ONCE SAID: EXPECT NOTHING; BE GRATEFUL FOR EVERYTHING.

EXPECT NOTHING By the age of six, Röhm was given a mantra by her mother who instilled the appreciation of quietness and giving gratitude in life. With a hectic pace balancing publicity for her stand out performance in David O. Russell’s American Hustle and being a hands-on mother, Röhm says she has cultivated a few techniques to ensure focus and calm in her life. “I think gratitude is a big part of staying focused and relaxed. As somebody I admire once said: Expect nothing; be grateful for everything. My mother always said to put one foot in front of the other. Right now, that’s what I’m doing and that’s a trick because you have to be organized for that to happen. Having and showing gratitude in life helps me immensely.” HER WEAK NUTRITIONAL LINK Röhm lost both her mom and maternal aunt to heart disease stemming from obesity issues several years ago, which has only heightened health awareness in herself. “My mother’s pass58

ing was a life altering and devastating experience for me,” says Röhm. However, her family history has opened her eyes to her own health risks and inspired her to take a proactive role in getting healthy and maintaining a wholesome lifestyle to ensure her own longevity. “I think if anybody knows what it’s like to experience the unexpected, it would be someone who lost another tragically to an early death,” says Röhm. On her path toward good health, Röhm has discovered a host of heart-healthy foods, making her more diligent about what is put on her family’s plates. Nutritional staples include: lots of fresh fruits for smoothies every morning, almond and soy milk, quick salad fixings and cheese. “Easton and I eat a lot of cheese – I’m definitely a European, so cheese would be impossible for me to eliminate,” says Röhm, who shuns the scale. “Cheese is definitely my weakest link.” Röhm’s fiancé doesn’t share in her cheese fetish. In fact, he’s a vegan. His influence has rubbed off on Röhm and she’s adopted a primarily vegetarian way of eating – except the cheese, of course. “There are always beans in the house, hummus, legumes, bananas, berries, peaches, yogurt, eggs and things like that,” says Röhm. The actor also supplements with spirulina and a ginger/ lemon/cayenne drink every morning. “I take my ginger shot to clean the pipes and eliminate any intestinal inflammation, and I take spirulina for energy.” 60

In addition to spirulina, Röhm says there is nothing wrong with a good cup of espresso to rejuvenate your body. However, lately she has taken to cold-pressed juices for the same jolting results. “The juices are alive and fresh and give me the same energy as a cup of coffee without hurting the body,” says Röhm. “If I can have some beet juice or green juice when I feel dehydrated or tired midday, that’s just so much more productive for me.” In spite of all her good habits, Röhm knows it isn’t always easy to avoid high-calorie foods, especially when raising a child. “Easton and I love grilled cheese sandwiches or macaroni and cheese so the biggest battle is trying to keep a healthy lifestyle, while not policing foods when there are kids around.” HUSTLE FOR THE MAGIC Portraying Dolly, the wife of Jeremy Renner’s New Jersey mayor in American Hustle, has pushed Elisabeth onto Hollywood’s list of sought after actors. So what’s been her own life’s hustle? “Like the film says, some people hustle for survival, some for love – I agree, but would add some people hustle for hope. I think the hustle is to stay incredibly positive in today’s world and see the beauty and kindness that people show each other. See the miracles every day. If we stop believing in the magic of it all, what a shame that would be. I think hustling is a cultivation of that magic. You have to hustle for the magic.” VM

What makes a man sexy? Great hair. Suit and tie or jeans and tee? It doesn’t matter what he wears as long as he wears it well. Favourite romantic vacation? SAVOUR THE FLAVOUR Is there a way to make chocolate taste even better? New research published in the Association for Psychological Science shows that the rituals we perform prior to eating can change our perception of food. Performing a ritual, even if it’s as simple as dipping a spoon in and out of a pot de crème before taking a bite, can make the food seem even more appealing.

Spread each with tomato sauce leaving a half-inch border around the edge. Cover sauce with ham and basil, then sprinkle with cheeses. Using your finger, brush edges with oil. RED CURRIED BEEF WITH BANANAS INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS:

• 2 tbsp vegetable oil, more if needed • 2 lb stewing beef, preferably well-marbled • 2 cups onion, coarsely chopped • 2 cups red pepper, coarsely chopped • 2 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped • 2 tbsp garlic, finely chopped • 2 tbsp red curry paste, or more if extra-spicy is desired • 1 cup coconut milk (light or regular) • 1 ripe banana, lightly mashed • 1⁄2 cup fresh cilantro, coarsely chopped • 3 cups fresh spinach • Salt and pepper to taste

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat one tablespoon of oil over medium-high. Season beef with salt and pepper and add half of the beef to the pot. Brown well on all sides, about eight minutes. Remove beef and set aside. (Note: the second half of beef will be cooked after the vegetables.) Add onions, peppers, ginger, garlic and a pinch of salt to pot. Over medium heat, cook for five minutes. Add more oil if needed. Place vegetables aside with cooked beef. Add remaining oil to pot and brown the second half of the beef, about eight minutes. Place all beef and cooked vegetables in pot along with red curry paste. Pour enough cold water in pot to just come to the top of the mixture. Cover, bring to boil, then lower heat to medium-low and cook for 11⁄2 to two hours, or until beef is tender. Check periodically to see if all the liquid has reduced. If so, add additional water to prevent burning. Add coconut milk and banana; bring to boil and reduce liquid to sauce consistency. Just before serving, stir in spinach and cilantro and season to taste if necessary. Serves 4

In a large pot, heat butter over medium heat. Add onions and celery and sauté until softened, about 10 minutes. Add garlic, ground cloves and sage and sauté for two minutes. Add ale and cook for one minute longer. Add chestnuts, potatoes, apples and stock; then bring to a boil. Lower heat to a simmer. DUCK CONFIT ON FRENCH TOAST INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• 3 large eggs • 1⁄2 cup homogenized milk • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 1 tsp fresh thyme, very finely chopped • Pinch of salt • 16 baguette slices cut half-inch thick (use a good quality baguette) • 2 tbsp unsalted butter • 1 leg of store-bought prepared duck confit (about 1⁄2 lb) • 1⁄2 cup orange marmalade • 1⁄4 cup whiskey or brandy • 1⁄4 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 head frisée lettuce, or other bitter green such as escarole, dandelion or arugula

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, thyme and salt until well combined. Add baguette slices and allow them to fully absorb the egg mixture, flipping them as needed. Place duck confit in oven to warm through, or follow package instructions on how to reheat. Once heated, discard skin and shred the duck into bite size pieces that will fit on the bread, keep warm. Meanwhile, in a small pan heat marmalade, whiskey and pepper over low heat until marmalade has fully melted, set aside. Once bread has absorbed the egg, heat half the butter in a large non-stick pan over medium heat. Cook baguette slices until lightly golden on one side, about two minutes. Turn slices over and cook until golden, making sure the egg mixture is cooked in the middle of the slices. Work in batches if necessary. Top each of the French toast pieces with a piece of frisée lettuce, a small mound of warm duck confit, and a generous drizzle of the marmalade glaze. Makes 16 portions

Calvert. In this role, Turner leaves her spirited nature behind and instead embraces a calmness that surrounds alternative therapies and holistic remedies. “Personally, I’m very by the book when it comes to medicine; I listen to my doctors,” she laughs. “I do like yoga, meditation and being close with nature. When it comes to remedies and treatments, however, I’m a Western medicine kind of gal.” MANAGING BI-COASTAL STRESS

Turner currently splits her time between Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, where Grimm is filmed. Even without two little ones in tow, this can be stressful. Add kids to the mix and it’s a little crazy. “It’s kind of cuckoo in Portland in a small apartment,” says Turner. “When I feel the stress crushing down on me with everything, I like to go for a walk. Leaving the environment really helps. SARAH ORBANIC Age: 38 Occupation: Photographer and Videographer Health Issue: Sensitive Immune System DETAILS: My fitness goal is to be lean with muscle. After every heavy leg workout, my lymph nodes in my neck would get swollen. If I wasn’t very careful about my diet, over the next few days I would come down with a cold. Natural Solutions: A strength coach gave me a supplement called L-Glutamine that takes white blood cells to the muscle tissue for repair and recovery. After taking it, I’ve never once gotten sick after a workout.

SARAH KARGES Age: 20s Occupation: Actor, Producer, Writer, Lover of life Health Issue: Stress Details: I needed a productive way to deal with anxiety. Natural Solution: As soon as I wake up, I journal whatever I’m feeling. I write about everything that is no longer serving me — worries, to do lists, etc. — then I end with what I am grateful for in my life. Instilling this simple daily regimen has changed my life tremendously. All my stress, stomach pains and anxiety have all gone away.

ALEX MELANSON Age: 26 Occupation: Teacher Health issue: Emotional Eating Details: In a moment of crisis or stress, it’s easy to fill your body with comfort foods. My comfort foods have changed over the years, however the idea of emotionally eating remains a constant battle in my life. Natural solutions: I recently decided to take control of my emotional eating. My first step was to check in with myself and ask: “Am I really hungry?” “Am I just bored/sad/mad?” My second step was to change the types of food I reached for. When I’m eating to tame my emotions, I look for something sweet. Rather than running to the convenience store, I have searched for healthier alternatives. My new favourite sweet treat is banana soft serve. It’s sweet, has the consistency of a soft serve ice cream, and

it has very few ingredients. The ingredients include: 1 frozen banana, ½ cup of milk. That’s it! I put it in a blender, and I have my sweet comfort food treat. I try to make my emotional eating a more conscious and healthier experience. VM SPRING 2014 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

THE

HOTEL DEL CORONADO FIND OUT WHY THIS CALIFORNIA HOTEL HAS BEEN A CELEBRITY FAVOURITE FOR 125 YEARS.

E

BY BONNIE SIEGLER

ver wonder where author L. Frank Baum got his inspiration for Oz and the yellow brick road? Or where Ray Bradbury liked to spend the holidays? Or where Some Like It Hot filmed Marilyn Monroe frolicking in the sand? The answer to all of these questions is the Hotel del Coronado. Established in 1888, the Hotel del Coronado is steeped in history. “It’s like you’re back 100 years, which is where you should be during the holidays,” Bradbury once said of the famous hotel. The Del, as it’s commonly referred to, is located on 28 acres of Coronado Island just outside of San Diego, California. It boasts 757 guestrooms spread out amongst the historic Victorian Building, Ocean Towers, California Cabanas and the villas and cottages.  In addition to its size and close proximity to San Diego, what else does The Del have to offer that other resorts cannot? “Unparalleled beachfront location and its historic charm,” says Lauren Ash Donoho, Public Relations Director for the property. As Southern California’s premiere oceanfront hotel, the yearround sunny climate makes the beach an asset year round. The Del is the perfect place to ride a wave or rent a bike. “Bike rentals are offered right on the beach bike path in front of the hotel,” says Ash Donoho. “Bicycling around Coronado,

seeing the beautiful homes and gardens, America’s number one beach and the Ferry Landing are three things people should definitely see.”    DOWN TIME AT THE SPA The Spa at The Del offers a variety of ocean-inspired treatments; and with 21 treatment rooms you don’t have to wait forever to book one. I recommend a Shell Coronado Massage and Shell Coronado Facial as the perfect pampering combination. The signature massage uses gently heated tigerclam shells to massage the body, while the facial alternates heated and chilled shells to bring the energy of the sea to the treatment and provide ultimate relaxation.

CREATE THE LOOK: Prep hair with a heatprotectant spray from roots to ends, and blow dry your hair straight down until your hair is almost dry. To create smoothness and shine, take a large round brush starting at the rear bottom half of your head and finish drying small sections from the roots through to the ends, keeping the brush straight at the ends instead of turning them under. Then take two-inch sections of your hair and spray with a thermal styling product (for protection from heat appliances and to add hold and shine). Using a fine-tooth comb, start at the root of the hair; then pull the comb through the hair followed by a flat iron. Finish off with a lightweight shine spray.

Marilyn Monroe during the filming of Some Like it Hot.

IN GOOD COMPANY Throughout the last century, The Del has played host to 10 American presidents, British royalty, dozens of famous authors, and hundreds of Hollywood stars – Kirk Douglas, Madonna, Frank Sinatra, Brad Pitt, and Barbra Streisand to name a few. It has honoured Charles Lindbergh after his solo transatlantic flight, and hosted Charlie Chaplin during his polo playing days.    With all this fame, what is the number one request from guests? “Over the years, our guests most often want to see where Marilyn Monroe romped on the beach during the filming of Some Like It Hot,” says Ash Donoho.  LOCAL FOOD Evening sunsets ablaze with golds, pinks and deep blues make the perfect setting for cocktails and cuisine. The hotel’s restaurant, 1500 Ocean, utilizes herbs and produce from the garden located just steps away. 1500 Ocean proudly states its support for local artisan farmers and uses sustainable or organic products whenever possible.   OLD CHARM MEETS NEW APPEAL With its sophisticated ambiance and rich history, it’s no surprise that The Del has a strong historical role in Southern California’s past, all while continuing to awe new guests each year.  A big part of The Del’s current appeal is turning the 125-year-old facility green. The Del has made significant progress against the four pillars (climate change, waste, natural resources, and health and wellbeing) and is the oldest hotel in the United States to receive Bronze Level certification by Green Seal.  “The entire staff embraces a culture of environmental responsibility, which supports our efforts to overcome the challenges associated with being a historic property,” says Donna Gonser, the hotel manager. “Conservation and environmental responsibility is everyone’s business. We are always looking at new and innovative ways to improve these important practices.” VM

YOUR HOROSCOPE BY CHRISSIE BLAZE

PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)

On February 6, Mercury turns retrograde in your sign reminding you to revise, rethink and review. Don’t launch new plans; instead stay flexible and prepare for a super busy March. The New Moon on March 1 in Pisces sets a positive tone, so work out now what you’d like to achieve in the year ahead.

ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)

Your professional life is humming in February. Make the most of this while also combating stress with relaxation and gentle exercise. March is extremely busy with planets changing signs or turning retrograde. Make the most of the New Moon in your sign on March 30 by setting positive intentions for the year ahead.

TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20)

Until March 1, Mars continues its long journey through Libra. Take advantage by working on relationships – personal and business. Expect romance or increased social activity around the Full Moon in Leo on Valentine’s Day. However, relationships may be frustrating in early March; it’s best to work quietly on your own plans and projects.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21)

Your ruler, Mercury, goes retrograde on February 6 until 28. It’s affecting your career so it’s good to back up computers and don’t begin projects until March. Expect new friendships and new professional opportunities that enable you to follow your dreams. It’s an intense time so remember to breathe and relax.

CANCER (June 22-July 22)

Venus begins 2014 retrograde in your opposite sign so expect challenges in relationships and use your heightened intuition to steer your way through potentially rocky times. With Jupiter in your sign, your life is expanding slowly but surely. On March 5, Jupiter turns direct, bringing progress. March is a busy, powerful month.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Avoid impulsively leaping into a new relationship with a work associate in February; it’s best to separate business from pleasure. In March, your mind is fertile and imaginative so follow through with some great ideas. March 30 is the perfect time for improving your health and exercise regime with a New Moon in Aries.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

With your ruler, Mercury, in your opposite sign, it’s a time when you can use communication to settle relationship challenges. However, from February 6 to 28, Mercury is retrograde

82

so be careful what you promise! While February is peaceful, March is a hectic, intense month. De-stress with exercise, yoga or meditation to retain your equilibrium.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)

February promises to be a pleasant stay-at-home month – and great if you’re thinking of renovating or buying real estate. Mars continues in your sign, so channel your energy through exercise, and keep pushing ahead with your goals and achievements towards success. March is one of the most romantic and creative periods of the year – enjoy!

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21)

Through February, Mars and Venus move through your twelfth House, encouraging you to work behind the scenes and spend quiet time in meditation. You may be having heart-to-hearts with loved ones, dealing with issues from the past. March is the ideal month for an important creative endeavor with a loved one or close friend.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Venus now gives a welcome boost to your finances. Even if you’re spending more, you’re also earning more and unexpected income could appear. Your social life is active and it’s a good time for networking. March is an incredibly busy month with three lunations bringing action but also stress; make time for R&R.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Your love life, creativity and finances benefit in February as Venus moves through your sign. You’re working hard but things slow in March and you may find projects grind to a standstill or need revision. The planets are compelling you to slow down generally; March is a good month for meditation, yoga and relaxation.

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re a humanitarian, ready to help others. This is particularly true in February when Venus touches your heart, involving you in charitable work. On March 6, Jupiter brings expansion, encouraging you to put on weight. Stick to your diet and exercise program! Stay focused or you could find March a wild ride of activity.

Not tonight, I’m too tired When “I’m too tired” is more than just an excuse.

NPN 02242012

We’ve all faked a headache or used the excuse “I’m too tired” but the truth is many of us really are too tired…too tired for a little romance, too tired for exercise, and too tired to concentrate. Life is busy and trying to juggle family and work can leave you feeling exhausted and run down…especially if you are iron deficient.
