SPRINGING INTO SPRING

MAGONLINE

Founder/Publisher Olivier Felicio

Celebrity Guest Editor Rena Owen

Content Manager Rob Shaw West Coast Entertainment Director Bonnie Siegler Web Guru Karl Delgadillo

I associate “winter’ with “heavy”. Heavy weather—rain, snow or both. Heavy clothes, winter woolies and boots. Heavy foods like roasts, stews, casseroles and potpies. I’m always relieved in the spring, which I associate with “light”. Lighter clothes, lighter foods (see page 56 for a delicious and colourful asparagus soup recipe, from a former chef to the British royal family, no less!) and more natural vitamin D. The days become longer and brighter, our moods lighten, and it is time to shed not just our winter coats but also the extra pounds we may have accumulated in the cold months. To shed excess weight and detoxify, I help my innate detoxification system perform its job with activities that make me sweat. The body releases toxins using perspiration as the conduit. With every bead of sweat, we expel toxins, which supports immune function and helps prevent toxic-overload related diseases that can result in symptoms such as allergies, fatigue, headache, indigestion, muscle aches, poor memory and more. Over-indulged? Work out and sweat it off. Sweating flushes the body of systemclogging substances like alcohol, cholesterol and salt. Got skin issues? Sweat! When we sweat, our pores open and release the grit and grime that has built up inside of them. Clogged pores can lead to pimples and dull looking skin. I do cardio on an indoor bike or treadmill, or go for a hike—anything that raises my heartrate and makes me sweat. I also need my feel-good post-exercise endorphins for my mood. The more I sweat, the better I feel. There are scientific reasons why you “glow” post exercise. As well, I use saunas or steam rooms, and I recently tried heated body wraps. You can also support your detoxification system by eating a healthy, balanced, varied diet and drinking at least two litres of spring, mineral or filtered water daily. Spring refers to the season and also to ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal and regrowth. Many plants begin to grow and blossom in springtime, so sweat yourself up to bloom, blossom and glow as well!

HOW DO YOU DEFINE BALANCED LIVING?

Elisabeth Röhm I really think it’s an intuitive thing. You have to be responsible to your commitments—to your children, to your partner if you have one, to your profession. I can feel when I’m sort of sliding. And I think if you let yourself slide too far away from your own core persona, you might have gone too far and you’re out of balance. There is a beautiful description of that sliding feeling: ‘when you can no longer feel your own skin.’ When you’re beginning to feel numb, I think that’s the time to say you need to make that a moment—a minute of time for yourself to find balance. We need to have that laugh out loud moment with our friends, we need to have that quiet stillness in the merrygo-round of chaos in life.

IT’S SPRING! Shake off the Winter Blues with EnduraStrength™ and Nocturna™

People who suffer from the “winter blues” have many of the common signs of depression: sadness, anxiety, irritability, loss of interest in their usual activities, withdrawal from social activities, and an inability to concentrate. They often have symptoms such as extreme fatigue and lack of energy, an increased need for sleep, craving for carbohydrates, having an increased appetite and weight gain. Traditional medicine uses herbal formulations to help us get moving and feeling better. Get to know EnduraStrength™ and Nocturna™: EnduraStrength™ is a formulation based on herbal medicine that contains five (5) botanicals: North American Ginseng Root, Siberian Ginseng, Astragalus Root, Bellflower Root, and Ashwagandha Root. These herbs are adaptogenic in action, therefore, they help temporarily relieve symptoms of stress (such as mental fatigue and the sensation of weakness), and improve mental and/or physical performance after periods of mental and/or physical exertion. The herbs present in EnduraStrength™ help with health issues relating to stress, stamina and mental fatigue.

9 9 9 9

Has adaptogenic herbs that reduce stress Contains trace nutrients for adrenal support May help with adrenal fatigue Supports healthy hormone pathways

Nocturna™ is a formula containing seven (7) botanicals that can help with stress, anxiety and sleep issues. It contains: Fleece Flower Stem, Chinese Arborvitae Seed, Chinese Jujube Seed, Hops Strobile, Valerian Root, Passionflower Herb, and Silk Tree Bark. An overabundance of stressors can build up creating anxiety, restlessness, or nervous reactions that may lead to insomnia and thus affect sleeping patterns. The benefits of herbal blends, like Nocturna™, are that there are no signs of grogginess or side effects the next morning.

MOVE WITH IT While it may seem wise, staying immobile isn’t necessarily best for back pain. Lowimpact movements that elevate heart rate and improve fitness while minimizing twisting and bending may help. Ask your health care practitioner which is best for you: brisk walking, swimming, and stationary cycling all increase flow of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the spinal area and promote healing.

ACNE NO MORE Since the skin is the largest organ of the body you need to treat it right with Herpanacine Skin Support! Our skin’s appearance affects all aspects of our lives—at work, home, school or at leisure. Men, women and children of all ages are often plagued with unsightly and painful chronic skin eruptions known as acne, roasacea, or cystic acne. These conditions often appear as pimples, redness, inflammation, clogged pores, blackheads and more. People who have these conditions are often self-conscious and in many cases their self-esteem suffers dramatically. When Dr. Wayne Diamond began his research and development of a formula to help his patients suffering from these conditions, he found that stress, diet and poor immune function were all contributing factors to these recurrent outbreaks. Working with the passion and drive to keep his patients healthy, Dr. Diamond, a Naturopathic Physician and Psychotherapist in private practice for 30 plus years, worked tirelessly for several years until he found the answer…Herpanacine Skin Support! Working with over 150 patients he came up with the right combination of twelve natural ingredients to ease and stop these outbreaks. Of course, it did not happen overnight but given a few months, patients found that they had clear, healthy, outbreak free skin and were healthy—head to toe! The reason the award winning Herpanacine Skin Support has worked for millions of people internationally for 27 years is the powerful work it is doing from day one. First it brings the toxins out, cleansing the skin layers, balancing the nervous system and overall bodily chemistry, while also very importantly building the immune system from the inside out. 30

CAN SUNLIGHT SHRINK FAT CELLS? A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Alberta shows that sunlight can shrink fat cells that lie just below the skin. The findings of the study were published in the journal Scientific Reports in November and reveal that the lipid droplets found in subcutaneous fat cells become smaller and are released from the cells when exposed to blue light emitted by the sun. This means that cells retain less fat. “When the sun’s blue light wavelengths—the light we can see with our eye—penetrate our skin and reach the fat cells just beneath, lipid droplets reduce in size and are released out of the cell. In other words, our cells don’t store as much fat,” said Peter Light, senior author of the study, professor of pharmacology and the director of the University of Alberta’s Alberta Diabetes Institute. Light and his team were actually looking for treatments for Type 1 diabetes and were attempting to engineer fat cells to produce insulin through light exposure when they stumbled upon this discovery. “It was serendipitous,” said Light. “We noticed the reaction in human tissue cells in our negative control experiments, and since there was nothing in the literature, we knew it was important to investigate further.” Research already shows that blue light has an effect on our body, specifically the blue light emitted from digital devices like cell phones, tablets and laptops. We’re warned against using these devices before bed because they emit the same blue light that the sun does and can signal our bodies to wake up. “Well, perhaps that pathway—exposure to sunlight that directs our sleep-wake patterns—may also act in a sensory manner, setting the amount of fat humans burn depending on the season. You gain weight in the winter, and then burn it off in the summer,” says Light. This could explain why we tend to gain more weight in winter months, when the days are shorter and our exposure to the sun is lower. This doesn’t mean that simply spending more time in the sun should be considered an effective weight loss technique. As Light cautions, “The study we just published, actually, was more of an observation of the effect…. Now, we need to know what the underlying mechanism is.” More research needs to be done to determine the intensity and duration of light exposure required to see useful results.

COMBAT ECZEMA, PSORIASIS, HIVES AND ITCHING Our skin epidermis and dermis constitutes approximately 16% of our body weight. The skin is our largest organ and acts as the first line of defense in the protection of our immune system. Many people of all ages suffer from skin conditions impacting their health. In children with atopic dermatitis, 45% present symptoms before the age of 6 months, 60% once they turn one year old, 85% before the age of five years and 40% will be reached in adulthood. Some cases will improve over time and others may not. It is possible to manage eczema and other skin illnesses and prevent them from becoming worse? The power of 6 medicinal plants and essentials nutrients Herbasante’s Execalm capsules’ phyto-therapeutic blend allows for the elimination of metabolic waste by ensuring that the blood, liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system all function effectively. The addition of bio-active and bioavailable B complex vitamins and minerals promotes skin regeneration. The specific selection we have included in our Execalm formula includes certain B complex vitamins and minerals which are known to prevent dry skin and dermatitis. They also promote the regeneration of the epithelial layer and the growth of skin appendages. They help to prevent rashes and skin eruptions and are essential for stabilizing the structure of cellular membranes to help the skin heal faster. Some B vitamins are key for regenerating conjunctive tissue (skin). With chronic skin illness we always require the same vitamins and minerals in larger amounts to heal over conjunctive tissue. When they are depleted, they may be replenished with the addition of B3, B5, B6, B8 selenium and zinc. Skin issues have several etiologies. They should be evaluated in order to advise on the appropriate treatment. It is not uncommon in a client case for us to see several etiologies presenting at once: Asthma, allergic rhinitis and leaky gut syndrome. When a skin condition is chronic and present overtime, the skin barrier becomes compromised, is weakened and this can lead to infection.

LARGE SCALE STUDY REVEALS DEMENTIA AND ALCOHOL RISK FACTORS Alcohol use disorders are the most important preventable risk factors for the onset of all types of dementia, especially early-onset. This according to a nationwide observational study, published in The Lancet Public Health journal, of over one million adults diagnosed with the disorder in France. This study looked specifically at the effect of alcohol use disorders, and included people who had been diagnosed with mental and behavioural disorders or chronic diseases that were attributable to chronic harmful use of alcohol. Of the 57,000 cases of early-onset dementia (before the age of 65), the majority (57%) were related to chronic heavy drinking. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines chronic heavy drinking as consuming more than 60 grams pure alcohol on average per day for men (4-5 Canadian standard drinks) and 40 grams (about 3 standard drinks) per day for women. As a result of the strong association found in this study, the authors suggest that screening, brief interventions for heavy drinking, and treatment for alcohol use disorders should be implemented to reduce the alcohol-attributable burden of dementia. “The findings indicate that heavy drinking and alcohol use disorders are the most important risk factors for dementia, and especially important for those types which start before age 65, and which lead to premature deaths,” says study co-author and Director of the CAMH Institute for Mental Health Policy Research Dr. Jürgen Rehm. “Alcohol-induced brain damage and dementia are preventable, and known-effective preventive and policy measures can make a dent into premature dementia deaths.” Dr. Rehm points out that on average, alcohol use disorders shorten life expectancy by more than 20 years, and dementia is one of the leading causes of death for these people. For early-onset of the disorder, there was a significant gender split. While the overall majority of patients were women, almost two-thirds of all early-onset dementia patients (64.9%) were men. Alcohol use disorders were also associated with all other independent risk factors for onset, such as tobacco smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, lower education, depression, and hearing loss, among modifiable risk factors. It suggests that alcohol use disorders may contribute in many ways to the risk of dementia. “As a geriatric psychiatrist, I frequently see the effects of alcohol use disorder on dementia, when unfortunately alcohol treatment interventions may be too late to improve cognition,” says CAMH Vice-President of Research Dr. Bruce Pollock. “Screening for and reduction of problem drinking, and treatment for alcohol use disorders need to start much earlier in primary care.” The authors also noted that only the most severe cases of alcohol use disorder—ones involving hospitalization—were included in the study. This could mean that, because of ongoing stigma regarding the reporting of alcohol-use disorders, the association between chronic heavy drinking and dementia may be even stronger.

TCM FLU R E M E DY

SAFE FOR KIDS HERBS USED FOR MILLENNIA VALIDATED BY MODERN SCIENCE BY ROB SHAW

I

nfluenza is a serious, sometimes fatal, illness caused by a group of related viruses that circulate in the fall and winter. Influenzas A and B have created global concern for their pandemic potential, having already resulted in over 500 million deaths in previous epidemics. Treating influenza with pharmaceutical anti-viral agents can be problematic because the viruses mutate frequently in ways that render them resistant to drugs. Natural antivirals may be less susceptible to resistance because they combine several virus-killing agents in one product. This also gives them the potential to be effective against more than one kind of pathogen. V871 is a product based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula called Shuang Huang Lian (SHL). The formula was originally developed in the 1960s, making it a modern combination, although the individual herbs have been used by TCM 32

practitioners for centuries. The strains of influenza viruses in vaccines are selected by experts according to their expectations of what will be active in a given flu season so they change from year to year. In contrast, TCM botanical treatments are not specific for particular viral strains. Instead, they improve the immune system’s response to the infection thereby lessening symptoms such as fever and coughing. They also prevent the viruses from reproducing which shortens the duration of the illness. SHL has been extensively studied and was specifically recommended for the treatment of influenza by the Chinese Ministry of Health for the epidemic that occurred in 2009. With SHL as its foundation, V871 is expected to provide healthcare practitioners with a safe, effective and well-tolerated natural alternative to drugs for the treatment of influenza and other serious illnesses.

DR. JANET MCKENZIE, BSN, MBA, ND 1. “V871, as a product based on the TCM formula called Shuang Huang Lian, is expected to provide healthcare practitioners with a safe, effective and well-tolerated alternative to pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of acute upper respiratory tract infections and their sequelae.” 2. “Viruses cause serious, sometimes fatal, illnesses. Treating them with pharmaceutical anti-viral agents can be problematic due to the frequency of mutations which render the viruses insensitive to drugs. Natural anti-virals may be less susceptible to this issue because they combine several virus-killing agents in one product. Another advantage of a multi-agent formula is that it can be used against more than one type of virus.”

GEAR UP FOR COLD AND FLU ALL YEAR LONG The incidence of respiratory tract infections, which include those caused by rhinoviruses leading to cold, flu, sinusitis, and worse is very high. It’s surprising that some physicians still prescribe antibiotics for viruses, perhaps to treat an accompanying bacterial infection, however some antibiotic drugs have no effect on viruses. As we know, over-prescribing of antibiotics has led to resistance to many of these drugs by bacteria mutating, their natural defense mechanism, rendering the drugs useless for other more serious future infections. Because of this, natural antimicrobials that are herbal-based, such as in V871, may be the answer. Just as the same virus may affect one person more harshly than another, a single ingredient remedy may appear to be as selective, and is why the manufacturers of V871 have incorporated several anti-viral herbs or ingredients into the formulation. A multiagent formula has an added advantage as it can be used for several types of virus and precludes the need to buy several single herb products. V871 contains the herbs Flos lonicerae, Radix scutellariae and Fructus forsythiae. This combination of ingredients is based on a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula called Shuang Huang Lian (SHL). Research has shown that SHL has over 100 biologically active constituents, and there is extensive documentation to support antiviral activity in each of the medicinal ingredients in the SHL formula. SAFE AND EFFECTIVE Commentary By: DR. JANET MCKENZIE, BSN, MBA, ND Influenza is a potentially fatal illness that makes its presence known annually. While flu vaccines offer some protection, they do not always prevent contracting flu. The herbs in the Traditional Chinese Medicine formula,

Shuang Huang Lian (SHL), which is the basis for V871 have been used safely and effectively for hundreds of years on an individual basis and for decades in this specific combination. Research shows the formula constitutes a well-tolerated alternative to medications for the treatment of the flu. Moreover, because these herbs have broad spectrum antiviral and antibiotic action, they could also be used to treat other common severe respiratory illnesses such as acute bronchitis and pneumonia as well a wide range of other conditions. One thing that makes the Traditional Chinese Medicine formula in V871 attractive from a naturopathic point of view is that it has been shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of potentially life-threatening illnesses in children as young as 6 months. Children are especially vulnerable to conditions that cause fever, such as influenza, pneumococcal diseases, and viral myocarditis. Numerous studies have found that the SHL formula reduces symptoms faster than pharmaceutical preparations and helps children recover more quickly. Additional appealing features of this Traditional Chinese Medicine formula are its cost and availability. Antiviral agents, such as Tamiflu, are very expensive and could be cost-prohibitive for families without benefit plan coverage. When epidemics occur unexpectedly, access to antiviral medications can be limited. In 2009, Canadians were blindsided when an unexpected spike in cases of flu meant Tamiflu powder stockpiles, used mostly for children, were exhausted quickly, leaving some prescriptions unfilled. Since 2009 when the FDA banned several flu and cold remedies for children due to concerns regarding toxicity, finding safe, effective alternatives has become very challenging. Because good broad spectrum products that are well-tolerated by people of all ages are hard to find, I expect this combination will become the first line treatment for many cases of flu. Marijuana Allergies NEW RESEARCH ON SENSITIVITIES TO CANNABIS BY ROB SHAW

W

ith the legalization of marijuana for recreational use just around the corner in Canada, it appears to have become a more mainstream substance in a short amount of time. Not only will Canadian consumers be able to purchase marijuana legally, they will also likely be allowed to purchase cannabis-infused foods, drinks and supplements. Not surprisingly, recent research has also shown a rise in sensitivity to cannabis. For many users of medical marijuana, cannabis is more than just recreational—it is imperative to their health and well-being. If consistent exposure to marijuana can cause an allergic reaction in some people, then this could create other problems for users and those passively exposed. CAN ONE REALLY BE ALLERGIC TO MARIJUANA? An allergy is basically an immune defense by the body trying to protect itself from outside invaders. Whereas the antibodies can be successful in eliminating a perceived toxin, the increased immune response is also what leaves you with the typical allergy symptoms. So, what could be contained in cannabis that the body is trying to keep out? A study published in AAAI showed allergic sensitization to Can s3—a protein found in Cannabis sativa. However, what makes a cannabis allergy potentially harmful is that as a substance, cannabis can be inhaled and/or ingested. Therefore, not only can the smoke cause allergic reactions (whether through direct or indirect exposure), but so can the pollen spores from the growth and/or production of cannabis. Research has also shown that cannabis-infused foods and drinks, and the mould that the herb can develop over time, are also linked to cannabis allergies. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Symptoms of a cannabis allergy are typically characteristic of other allergies, but can also be dependent on the way a person 34

was exposed. For example, touching cannabis could result in a contact dermatitis reaction, whereas inhaling it can affect the eyes, sinuses and respiration. Some reported symptoms of allergic reactions to cannabis are: ❯ Asthma (mild / bronchial) ❯ Chest tightness ❯ Contact urticaria - skin rash ❯ Dry coughing ❯ Dyshidrotic hand eczema – skin blisters ❯ Headaches ❯ Nasal congestion ❯ Nose and eye itching ❯ Pharyngeal pruritus – sore or itchy throat ❯ Generalized pruritus – itchy skin ❯ Rhinoconjunctivitis (acute / intense) ❯ Rhinorrhea – runny nose ❯ Sneezing ❯ Watery eyes WHAT’S NEXT? In Canada, a typical skin allergy test for cannabis is not yet available. Since there is no standard way to currently test for marijuana allergy, one should also expect questions relating to lifestyle, history of use and exposure. Traditional treatment options for those with mild allergic reaction to cannabis are available, but for those with a history of asthma or anaphylaxis, or the chronically-allergic cannabis user, abstinence and avoidance of the allergen is best. This will likely include avoiding the expected abundance of cannabis-laced products expected to be available across Canada in 2018. Although the research is small and recent, cannabis allergies are on the rise. Currently, most cannabis allergies can be treated similarly to other allergies, but more research is needed to better understand which allergens are present in cannabis, and to establish better treatment options. oint pain can occur when the soft tissues that support the joint become damaged, either through injury, or everyday wear and tear.

HOW WEAR AND TEAR AFFECTS JOINTS Repetitive motion/strain damages the slippery cartilage that caps bones in a joint. As the damage increases, bare areas of bone may be exposed. When unprotected bone surfaces rub together, pain and stiffness result. Both the damage to the cartilage and the impact on the bones can establish inflammation, which can cause pain, stiffness and additional impairment to increase. Among the agents of inflammation in this process are a cartilage-degrading enzyme known as matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP3), and a pro-inflammatory signal molecule known as 5-lipoxygenase. THE IMPORTANCE OF COLLAGEN Collagen is one of the main components in the soft tissues, such as cartilage, that protects and support joints. Collagen is a protein made from amino-acids including glycine, proline, glutamine, hydroxyproline and arginine. There are up to 29 different types of collagen that are used in a variety of ways throughout the body, with 4 comprising the most common. The strongest and most abundant is type I, which is found in scar tissue, skin, tendons, artery walls and bones, and makes up over 90% of our collagen. The qualities of collagen are protected by protein-sugar complexes known as proteoglycans. Aggrecan is one of the most important proteoglycans in cartilage. THREE NEW ALTERNATIVES TO NSAIDS FOR JOINT HEALTH 1. BOSWELLIA SERRATA is a botanical supplement made from a tree resin similar to frankincense. It has anti-inflammatory properties. 2. AVOCADO SOY UNSAPONIFIABLES (ASU) are natural vegetable extracts made from avocado and soybean oils. They contain anti-inflammatory substances (phytosterols). 3. NATURAL EGGSHELL MEMBRANE (NEM) is derived from the inner and outer layers of the membrane within an eggshell. NEM is a good source of collagen and other nutrients that support the maintenance and repair of soft tissues in a joint.

/J O I N T

H E A LT H

HOW BOSWELLIA AFFECTS OSTEOARTHRITIS AND OTHER JOINT CONDITIONS Boswellic acids derived from Boswellia serrata directly inhibit pro-inflammatory signalling molecules (5-lipoxygenase, nF-kappa Beta) to reduce inflammation. The Boswellia extract used in studies is known as 5-Loxin, and it has been found to reduce pain and stiffness through its actions on 5-lipoxygenase and MMP3. A 2014 study established Boswellia serrata extract was effective in reducing pain and immobility due to tendonitis and epicondylitis. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN TREATING JOINT PAIN AND STIFFNESS WITH BOSWELLIA DECREASED PAIN, STIFFNESS AND IMMOBILITY Boswellia supplements can reduce pain and immobility associated with osteoarthritis significantly; effects can occur in as little time as one week. COMPARISON TO NSAID MEDICATIONS Approximately one third of people who are using NSAID medications long term to control their joint pain and inflammation develop significant gastrointestinal side effects. Boswellia serrata extracts provide comparable relief with little risk of gastrointestinal distress. SAFETY Multiple studies with human subjects have established that Boswellia serrata extracts are safe, effective and well-tolerated. Animal studies have established Boswellia serrata is non-toxic in doses that exceed 2,000 times the effective dose in humans. Boswellia may interact with the following medications: warfarin and other anticoagulants, leukotreine inhibitors for asthma, anticholesterol medications, antifungal medications as well drugs used to treat cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Please check with your doctor before taking Boswellia. SIDE EFFECTS AND CAUTIONS No significant side effects have been identified. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant or who are breast-feeding should consult their healthcare practitioners before using Boswellia. JOINT CARE 2018 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

HOW TO TAKE BOSWELLIA Boswellia serrata extracts (e.g. 5-LoxinTM, AflapinTM) are usually taken in amounts ranging from 100 mg to 300 mg in a single dose taken with breakfast, starting with the minimum dose and increasing in a step-wise fashion after 3 months. If improved results do not occur at higher doses, resume taking the lowest effective dose. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for taking Boswellia serrata extracts. HOW ASU AFFECTS OSTEOARTHRITIS AND OTHER JOINT CONDITIONS Plant sterols from ASU preparations are thought to be the primary sources of protective activity for cartilage-producing cells. ASU reduces damage to cartilage by increasing the synthesis of collagen and proteoglycan (aggrecan), and preserves hydroxyproline, the component in collagen that makes it stable. It inhibits MMP3 and other pro-inflammatory signalling molecules. A study published in 2017 showed ASU diminishes inflammatory activity of immune system cells (monocytes) and promotes stimulation of anti-inflammatory signalling molecules. A 2018 study found ASU specifically inhibits a pro-inflammatory molecule (PGE2), also targeted by the COX-2 inhibitor drug class, but potentially without the side effects of COX-2 inhibitors (e.g. CelebrexTM). WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN TREATING JOINT PAIN AND STIFFNESS WITH ASU DECREASED PAIN, STIFFNESS AND IMMOBILITY Studies conducted for treatment terms of 3 months found ASU improved pain, stiffness and mobility as assessed using standardized tools for evaluation, and decreased analgesic use. A study on patients with femorotibial gonarthrosis conducted for 6 months found similar measures of improvement using the same standardized assessment tools. A study conducted on patients with osteoarthritis of the hip not only found symptomatic improvement, but also determined ASU reduced the rate of progression of arthritis in the joints. SAFETY The safety and efficacy of ASU has been demonstrated in trials lasting up to 6 months with involving over 360 patients. ASU can interact with warfarin. Please check with your healthcare provider before using ASU if you have also been prescribed warfarin. 38

SIDE EFFECTS AND CAUTIONS Most people who use ASU do not experience side effects, and of those who do, digestive system symptoms were the most common. ASU has not been studied in people who are pregnant and should be used with caution under medical supervision by those who are pregnant, may become pregnant or who are breastfeeding. ALLERGY INFORMATION – SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE WITH SEAFOOD ALLERGIES A number of well-known natural treatments for joint pain, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, are marine-sourced. This is problematic for people who have shellfish allergies. ASU does not trigger shellfish allergies so is a suitable substitute for people who have them. ASU compares favourably with chondroitin for treatment of osteoarthritis symptoms. HOW TO TAKE ASU A typical dose is 300 mg/day, taken with water. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for taking ASU. HOW NEM AFFECTS OSTEOARTHRITIS AND OTHER JOINT CONDITIONS Eggs have long been considered a good source of collagen because type I and type IV are found in the inner and outer membranes lining the egg’s shell, and in the yolk. The usefulness of the collagen is limited, however, because cooking changes the structure of the collagen. Because supplements provide egg collagen that is not denatured, they are considered a better source of eggshell membrane collagen than eggs. Tendons and ligaments consist of collagen fibers that connect to muscle, in the case of tendons, and bones, in the case of ligaments. Joint cartilage consists of collagen and protein-sugar complexes known as proteoglycans. The main proteoglycan is made up of chains of hyaluronic acid. Natural Eggshell Membrane (NEM) provides these substances. How does it work? Here are some research findings from the studies completed to date: ❯ it may suppress pro-inflammatory signalling involving immune system cells ❯ it may increase secretion of anti-inflammatory signalling molecules ❯ its constituents seem to protect the cells that make cartilage ❯ increased hyaluronic acid may promote cartilage production and repair

Because NEM is a food sourced supplement, its constituents are well tolerated and interact minimally with medications. This means NEM could be an excellent adjunct for people with rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of autoimmune arthritis as well as those with osteoarthritis or possibly those with cartilage damage from infectious arthritis. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN TREATING JOINT PAIN AND STIFFNESS WITH NEM DECREASED PAIN AND STIFFNESS Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affection millions of people around the world. It causes the protective cartilage in your joints to deteriorate. A study published in the Journal of Arthritis found that patients who had osteoarthritis of the knee and/or hip experienced up to 35% improvements in pain and stiffness after up to 60 days of treatment, with most experiencing noticeable improvement in as little as 10 days. Other studies of people with osteoarthritis or post-menopausal joint pain found clinically significant improvements in pain and stiffness with up to 90 days of treatment, with most showing benefit after as little as 7 days of treatment for pain and as little as 4 for stiffness. INCREASED RANGE OF MOTION Arthritis often limits range of motion in addition to causing pain and stiffness, and these limitations are as much of a burden on quality of life as the pain. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food looked at the effect of NEM on joint flexibility. The study found improvement in the range of motion for multiple joints, not just those most affected by the participant’s primary joint condition. SAFETY In a comprehensive 2012 study published in Food and Chemical Toxicity, NEM was evaluated for cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, acute oral toxicity, and 90-day repeated-dose oral toxicity. Even at much larger amounts than therapeutic doses, NEM was well tolerated.

“NEM® did not exhibit any signs of acute toxicity in rats at a single oral dose of up to 2000 mg/kg body weight, nor signs of toxicity (via urinalysis, hematology, clinical chemistry, or histopathological evaluation) in rats at a repeated oral dose of up to 2000 mg/kg body weight per day for 90 days.” Numerous human studies conducted since 2012 have found the study subjects tolerated therapeutic doses of NEM well. SIDE EFFECTS AND CAUTIONS Natural eggshell membrane has no known side effects apart from the concern about triggering allergy symptoms in susceptible people. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant or who are breast-feeding should consult their healthcare practitioners before using NEM. ALLERGY INFORMATION – POSSIBLY SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE WITH SEAFOOD ALLERGIES If you are allergic to eggs, you should use NEM with caution and contact your doctor if food allergy symptoms emerge. A number of well-known natural treatments for joint pain, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, are marine-sourced. This is problematic for people who have shellfish allergies. NEM does not trigger shellfish allergies so is a suitable substitute for people who have them. HOW TO TAKE NATURAL EGGSHELL MEMBRANE A typical dose is 500 mg taken once per day. Your health practitioner may prescribe a different regimen according to the needs of your case. SUMMARY New natural products, such as Boswellia serrata extracts, Avocado-Soy Unsaponifiables and Natural Eggshell Membrane, are emerging as alternatives which meet or exceed the benefits provided by glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health and may allow many to reduce or replace their usage of NSAID medications. HOW OBESITY ADVERSELY AFFECTS THE SPINE According to the US CDC over 70.7% of adults in the USA are overweight, and 37.9% of those are considered obese. In Canada, about ¼ of adults are obese and on both sides of the border childhood obesity has steadily increased since the 1980’s. Now, research published at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has found that obesity and low back pain are directly related to a decrease in spinal mobility in women (men were not subjects in the study). The study was created to objectively assess the posture and function of the spine during standing, flexion and lateral bending in obese subjects with and without lower back pain, and to investigate the role of obesity in lower back pain. The study found a generally reduced range of motion of the spine, due to a reduced mobility at both pelvic and thoracic level because of obesity. Additionally, posture was adapted to compensate for additional weight by increasing their anterior pelvic tilt, which increased lumbar lordosis in those who were obese and had lower back pain. In conclusion, this study found that obese individuals with lower back pain showed a higher degree of spinal impairment when compared to those without lower back pain. The relationship between obesity and lower back pain had already been established in previous studies, and spinal impairment is now confirmed as well. It’s common for those with lower back pain to compensate their posture but this unfortunately puts stress on other areas of the spine such as the neck. Reduced activity due to lack of exercise compounds the problem. 40

However, reducing weight through diet and exercise can put less stress on the spine, and while this is not a complete list, here are several herbs for spinal and joint pain that have research to support their claims. HERBS THAT MAY HELP DEVIL’S CLAW (HARPAGOPHYTUM PROCUMBENS) - is found in many arthritis creams due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It may also be found in capsules. FRANKINCENSE (BOSWELLIA SERRATA) - is a resin derived from Boswellia trees and has been used for thousands of years as an incense in spiritual practice. The herb Boswellia has been used for about as long as a natural anti-inflammatory. TURMERIC (CURCUMA LONGA) - a pungent and popular culinary herb aka curcumin and used in spicy curry dishes, turmeric has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect which may help reduce pain and inflammation. WHITE WILLOW (SALIX ALBA) - the bark has been known for its analgesic affect for hundreds of years and was used as the primary ingredient in acetylsalicylic acid, or ASA. Before trying any new supplement or therapy, be sure to consult a licensed health practitioner to ensure the remedy or treatment is right for you.

YOUR VERSATILE INGREDIENT Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of more than 100 types of arthritis, and the most common kind of any other form. The condition causes the joint cartilage to deteriorate, resulting in swelling, pain, and limited motion. Individuals who are overweight are at risk of developing OA due to weight pressure upon the joints, specifically the knees and hips. To treat OA symptoms, medical professionals often advise lifestyle changes—including a change in diet and exercise— prescription drugs to reduce inflammation, and various forms of physical therapy as treatments for managing the disease. For patients who are overweight, alleviating pressure from the joints via diet is a natural and simple avenue to pursue with major health benefits. “In patients who are overweight or obese, even a small reduction in weight has been shown to create significant improvement on OA symptoms,” explains Dr. Heather Barrett, ND. Besides lifestyle changes, surgical and other procedures such as lubrication injections, bone realignments, and joint replacements are common methods used to help strengthen the affected areas. Less evasive methods include physical and occupational therapy, as well as practicing Tai chi, Yoga, or investing in braces or shoe inserts to support weakening joints. In conjunction with common treatments, the versatility of Pycnogenol® is what can lead patients of all ages and lifestyles to live a better quality of life. For overweight patients living with OA, recommending a daily supplement with Pycnogenol® is vital for encouraging the physical endurance that’s needed to lose excess weight. For professional and amateur athletes who suffer from joint pain caused by exertion, Pycnogenol® has been proven to increase muscular growth and strength to increase levels of physical performance and lessen everyday muscle and joint pain. Likewise, for the aging demographic, Pycnogenol® has the ability to reduce the discomfort brought on by OA, increase ranges of movement, and provide assistance with various age-related ailments such as metabolic disorders and cognitive function. As such, this ingredient is widely recognized in the medical community for its multifunctionality that can be used to treat many conditions.

YOUNG AND OLD The Arthritis Society says 1 in 6 Canadians aged 15 years and older are living with a form of arthritis—a number that is expected to increase to 1 in 5 adults by 2036. Although Osteoarthritis—caused by the attrition of joint use—tends to affect those who are 40 years and older, this joint condition continues to be the leading cause of disability in Canada with a wide-ranging impact. As noted by Statistics Canada, arthritis is a chronic condition that increases with age for both men and women. While there is no cure for the disease, there are products that work to reduce symptoms and prevent future degeneration, such as Pycnogenol®—a standardized maritime pine bark extract that provides a plethora of health benefits. To combat joint pain, Pycnogenol® contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of procyandin, an antioxidant and neurosprotective compound that reduces inflammation, supports heart health, longevity, and increases glutathione levels for detox. Pycnogenol® also contains substances that improve blood flow, strengthen the immune system, and delay the ageing process which has the potential to appeal to both recreational and serious athletes. According to a clinical trial published in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness in 2013, Pycnogenol® has the ability to strengthen muscles and joints when implemented into an individual’s daily routine. “[The]… daily supplementation of Pycnogenol® offers a natural approach to help reduce post-workout muscular pain, increase levels of physical performance and get you training again sooner,” explains Dr. Gianni Belcaro, a lead researcher of the study. “Pycnogenol®, along with good training and proper nutrition, may help to significantly improve physical fitness and reduce oxidative stress and muscular pain in both in those who exercise recreationally and triathletes,” adds Dr.Gianni Belcaro. When everyday wear and tear on joints is what’s causing a patient to slow down and exercise less, Pycnogenol® is an ingredient that assists with endurance, strength, and mobility by reducing the amount of aggressive immune cells that infiltrate the joints through its anti-inflammatory properties. When age becomes a hindering factor of physical mobility, be sure to highlight Pycnogenol® as a means to reduce the discomfort of Osteoarthritis in order to improve one’s everyday life. FIGHT FATIGUE BY BOLSTERING YOUR BODY BY DR. JOYCE JOHNSON

atigue affects all of us and can even impact those around us. Vehicular accidents, lost productivity at work, and less quality time with kids and family are frequently attributed to fatigue. Below, we will discuss what may be making you tired and offer some natural remedies that may help. POOR EATING HABITS AND DEHYDRATION Food choices directly affect your energy levels. Nutrition influences your brain’s neurotransmitters and mood; sleep cycle; hormonal balance; and digestive and immune functions. Poor eating habits such as eating fast, irregular meal times, and choosing low quality foods can cause you to feel tired. Instead, take time to eat regular meals and choose energy

42

promoting foods such as; those high in B-vitamins (grass-fed beef, wild-caught fish, cage-free organic eggs and poultry, and all kinds of green leafy vegetables) and healthy fats (omega-3 fatty acids, which help to stabilize hormones and your mood— wild-caught fish, seeds, coconut and olive oil, avocados, and nuts). Avoid choosing processed foods high in refined sugar and simple carbs as they can cause a rapid increase in blood sugar followed by a sharp drop, resulting in fatigue. Limit or avoid caffeine and alcohol. Dehydration is due to an excessive loss of body fluids, water and electrolytes—or not drinking enough water. If you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated! Dehydration reduces blood volume, leading to thicker blood, inefficient heart pumping,

decreased rate of oxygen and nutrient uptake and ultimately resulting in fatigue, moodiness, “brain fog”, and muscle weakness. Normal fluid needs are estimated by taking your weight in pounds and dividing that number in half. Drink that number of ounces of fluid daily, although a higher fluid intake may be needed depending on your activity level. SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE Sitting all day is very hard on your body and often causes body pain and stiffness, headaches, fatigue, weight gain and mood issues. Regular exercise impacts both physical and psychological health by helping to balance hormones, improve insulin resistance and sleep. Exercise also helps to release endorphins, increase stamina and improve mood. A study by the University of Georgia found: Sedentary people (with no medical conditions) who regularly complained of fatigue, increased their energy levels by 20% and decreased their fatigue by 65% by engaging in regular, low intensity exercise. INSUFFICIENT SLEEP Most adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep consistently, each and every night, to feel their best, but we know this is not happening for many adults. A survey from 2011 found sleep disorders affect 40% of adult Canadians. Causes of poor sleep include stress, poor diet, consuming caffeine, staying up late, hormonal imbalance, pain, digestive disorders, and family life (babies, children). Improve your sleep by consuming a low-calorie snack (fewer than 200 calories) that provides easily digestible carbohydrate and protein before bed. The right kind of snack can help boost your levels of the amino acid tryptophan, which your body converts into the sleep-regulating neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin. Examples include walnuts or pistachios, cherries or cherry juice, rice cracker and almond butter. Avoid spicy foods

and caffeinated or alcoholic drinks as these can be difficult to digest and/or be stimulating. Make changes to your bedtime routine by turning off technology and limit light exposure with blackout blinds or curtains. A fan or white noise machine may help you sleep. Avoid caffeine and exercise before bedtime as these can cause the body to feel energized and interfere with sleep. Lastly, consider using natural sleep supplements such as melatonin, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), and/or L-theanine, to help calm a racing mind and encourage restful sleep and relaxation. NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES Nutrient deficiencies contribute to fatigue due to malabsorption, insufficient intake via diet or supplementation, depletion caused by medications and/or foods and beverages, or even stress. Some possible nutrient deficiencies that can occur and impact energy production in the body include: ❯ B vitamins (B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, B12, folic acid, and biotin) are necessary for converting food into energy. ❯ Magnesium, an essential mineral to the human body, is involved in more than 300 metabolic reactions, a key reaction being energy production. Magnesium is required to form and store the energy molecule ATP. ❯ Iron is necessary to produce red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout your body. When iron levels get too low, there may be a deficiency in red blood cells, a condition called anemia. Anemia causes fatigue, weakness, pale skin, dizziness etc. Including a daily multivitamin can help to fill small nutrient gaps due to poor diets and may help prevent deficiencies in some cases. There are also many health conditions that may be causing your fatigue, so please ensure you are getting assessed by your health care provider to find out the cause. BUILDING WITH BALANCE: LEGS AND GLUTES

TONE IN TANDEM FOR BEST RESULTS BY MIKE WHITELY, PROFESSIONAL TRAINER PROTRAINERLIVE.COM

T

here’s no doubt having tight toned legs can make us feel great when wearing a fitted pair of jeans. Most of us desire to look our best by conforming to what society deems as attractive. Yet, beauty trends change over time and now we have reached the era where everyone wants to have the perfect glutes. What are the glutes? The three gluteal muscles that move the thigh—gluteus minimus, gluteus medius and the largest, gluteus maximus, aka your buttocks! Of course, you want to have sexy glutes and toned legs, and as there is a relationship between them you can develop both at once.

44

BE REALISTIC Building glutes can be fairly easy if you’re willing to put in the work. To start your leg transformation quickly you need to have the right training intensity and volume. Also, set an attainable goal that is realistic. You may not end up looking like Jennifer Lopez but you will be a sexier version of yourself. Choosing the right exercises and training volume are key to successfully developing your legs. After training clients to reach their personal fitness goals for over 20 years, it’s now my pleasure to reveal 3 of my top secrets on how to use the correct exercises and volume to build your version of “sexy legs”!

VIVA Fitness Feature.indd 44

2018-03-22 1:24 PM

COMPOUND YOUR WORKOUT But first, before beginning a program for shaping your legs you need to understand the basic framework before we get into specific exercises. Firstly, two of the pitfalls people face when training legs are lack of intensity and inadequate volume. Based on my experience training people with different body types over the years, I’ve found that compound weighted exercises such as squats, dead-lifts, lunges, leg presses and hip thrusts work best for building lean legs. To maximize your results, use compound movements and keep the repetition range between 8 to 15 reps per set; the set volume should be a maximum of 15 reps, and with sets ranging between 3 to 5. REST AND MONITOR Overtraining is a major problem for a lot of people working on building their legs. Too many training days per week and too many exercises per training session can lead to excessive stress on the joints and potential injury! This volume will paralyze your leg development and move you away from your goal, which is sexy legs. One of the signs indicating you are in a state of overtraining is knee pain; most people ignore or don’t recognize this sign of overtraining and typically believe it is part of the process. For a short period of time when you first start training this is sometimes normal. The best way to prevent knee injuries and overtraining is to monitor your volume and rest (recovery time) between your training sessions. As everyone has a different threshold for exercise volume, you need to observe your recovery time carefully. To identify proper recovery from your training take note of any muscle soreness, lack of range of motion (not able to fully stretch the recently trained muscle group), and measure your resting heart rate first thing

in the morning. Take your heart rate every morning (or every other morning) and compare to the previous week. If the average of your heart rate is higher than the previous week’s average, then you are in a state of overtraining. Take a few days off and monitor your early morning heart rate until it comes down to the previous rate, or lower than the previous week’s average heart rate. It is important to remain mindful of the volume and recovery time in order to achieve desired results. So, now that we have the basic knowledge on how to build a program lets talk about my 3 magical training instructions to help you build your perfect glutes and sexy legs in record time! 1. Train the front and the back of your legs on 2 different days. Train your quads on one day; give yourself a 2-day break, and then train your hamstrings with your glutes. 2. Add low-impact plyometric jump training into your program. This will build strength faster, helping you lift more weight, and build your leg muscles faster. 3. Rep out every exercise until you have no strength; not even to do one more rep or until the fire (lactic acid) in your legs from the repetitions become unbearable. There are a multitude of details, such as specific lifting techniques and training time to cover in one article. And as always, consult with a health professional and fitness trainer before beginning any new exercise regimen. If you would like direction in building your personal leg training program, go to https://protrainerlive.com/f9-questionnaire and submit the completed health questionnaire. One of my team or myself would love to help you customize your new glutes and leg program at no charge. VM JOINT CARE 2018 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

essica Arman created a brand that is making headlines all over the world. My Magic Mud came to life in her kitchen when she created a natural product for her daughter’s sensitive teeth. The “magic” happened when it not only fixed her sensitivity; it also whitened her teeth too! The media attention began when her daughter Allie, being 7 years old at the time, was playing with her mom's phone and posted before and after pictures on her mom's Facebook page. It sparked interest among friends and the rest, as they say, is history. The product line continued to expand when the company created a wider selection of flavoured activated charcoal toothpastes, flavoured activated charcoal polishing toothpowders, turmeric- and cacao-flavoured whitening toothpowders, oral rinses and a natural plastic bio-friendly toothbrush with charcoal-infused bristles. Most recently, My Magic Mud was one of the hottest products in the celebrity gift bags on the red carpet at the Oscars, as well as being mentioned on the E! News broadcast the night before. The list of news coverage continued with features on NBC’s TODAY Show, in TIME, Marie Claire, The Wall Street Journal, and many more news media outlets have helped spread the message of My Magic Mud across the world. Due to what the company calls their “rock star customers” My Magic Mud is the official leader in activated charcoal oral care products in North America, and now has recently hit the world stage. I saw a beautiful quote the other day from the Dalai Lama,” says Elisabeth Röhm in her Southern California beachside home which reveals her laidback, bohemian style. “’There are only two times in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow. Today is the right day to love, believe, do, and mostly live.’ That sums it up.” Röhm is back in California after a very hectic summer and fall with back-to-back projects filming The Oath in Puerto Rico, Will Gardner and The Magnificent Room. From the looks of things, the actress’s mind is at least as much on single motherhood to 10-year-old daughter Easton as it is on her pending 5 AM work call. STRONG SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION Consider the books on the living room coffee table: Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now and Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet. Although Elisabeth’s career is busy, it’s she who makes dinners at night, takes Easton to school and picks her up, and attends the usual endless birthday parties a pre-teen attends. Yet, Elisabeth’s own childhood was amidst an unconventional atmosphere. Born in Dusseldorf, Germany, Röhm moved with her American-born parents to New York City before her first birthday. “Both my parents had European backgrounds and became meditators and yogis, which is how they met. That is where I get my spirituality background and strong mind/body connection,” states Röhm. Yoga and meditation are still the cornerstones of Röhm’s peace and creativity. “I’m not a gym person at all. What I love about yoga is that it’s actually just like anything that promotes stillness but also exhilaration, which is applicable to business, parenting or even a romantic relationship,” says the actress still recognized for her roles as ADA Serena Southerlyn on Law & Order, and Dolly in the hit film American Hustle. “Maybe I’m lucky in that I have a natural built-in inclination to doing things that are mind/body/spirit.” 50

TAKING IT ALL IN STRIDE Röhm at 44, looks every inch—well maybe every other inch— your average young mom who loves to bike ride along the beach, blonde hair blowing in the wind, or walk barefoot in the sand. Then again, she has eyes of blue like the ocean waves, a sensual mouth that is quick to smile, and her skin could be confused with satin. Still, Röhm insists she’s a character actress, not a Hollywood star and is quite happy in her lot in life. “You can find balance and inspiration in everything really. The only way to sustain a happy life and not age quickly and lose the light in your eyes is to find balance. I don’t think we need to possess every material item or overdo in being a martyr. I show gratitude on a regular basis.” She recalls a perfect day recently with Easton. “We rode horses, got a sandwich and came home. That was a great day for me! And I come back to yoga which helps me in this experience of finding perfect days like this.” Active in charity work, Röhm recalls her recent catwalk for The Red Dress fashion show and none other than supermodel Christie Brinkley preceded her stroll. “Can you imagine being more intimidated— here’s a professional model and here’s me!” Her deep, hearty laugh fills the room. “I thought of one of Eckhart Tolle’s books and thought of what he said, that we should always put an inch between us and our experience. My mother introduced me to Tolle and maybe having lost her, I realize every moment— this moment—is the best moment of my life right now. If you feel that way genuinely there’s a lot of gratitude of being in the here and now.” STARTING FRESH EACH MORNING Discipline and being conscious of her surroundings is how the 5’8” Röhm keeps herself healthy and strong in both body and mind. Starting out her days with a nutritional smoothie makes with everything from berries to mango to raw coconut blended with coconut water (“I love the hydration stuff ”), Röhm doesn’t 52

consume many vitamins, opting to get them through her fresh fruits and vegetables. She does take a fish oil supplement though. “I still have a shot of lemon, ginger and cayenne drink in the morning. It’s a great “Roto-Rooter” for your system. I even add a little to tuna fish that I’ve made with dill, mayonnaise, fresh herbs…I think herbs are great because they’re flavorful but not fattening.” On any given day, you’d find cilantro, dill, basil, mint, Himalayan pink salt and black pepper in her spice drawer. “I tend to eat green foods rather than ones which require a huge carbon footprint. And ones that give me energy.” FOCUS—AND REMEMBER TO RELAX She certainly needs that energy source today. Here is her to-do list written out on a notepad: read 2 scripts, take Easton to cooking camp, lunch with a friend, buy light bulbs and ink cartridges, get the dog a new dog tag. “I’m the queen of the lists. I think organizing your thoughts, being clear on your goals and writing things down helps to not only conceive of something, but to achieve it. That’s concentration,” Röhm states. “Memory is another thing. I don’t struggle with memory. Panic and white-knuckling your way through just creates resistance, and you never get good results. You have to figure out how to relax and let things absorb. That’s the trick of life. Another is having a strong identity that starts at a young age and I thank my parents for that. Life itself can make your identity very shaky at times.” Does Röhm do all this for the sake of her longevity and peace of mind? “There’s a beautiful quote in Letters to A Young Poet where he talks about living the question. We’re not living the answer, we’re living the question and the question is in the sunset, in the not-knowing, in the knowing what you can know and being comfortable with what you can’t know. I know I appreciate acting because that’s where I can put my crazy or the vulnerable side, but ultimately it’s the peace and steadiness I find as a woman that gives me the feeling of being grounded, being loved and being balanced.” VM

ASPARAGUS & NEW POTATO SOUP SERVES: 6 SMALL SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS PARMESAN STRAWS: • 200g ready-made, all-butter puff pastry • 1 large free-range egg • 2 tbsp finely chopped chives • 3 tbsp finely grated parmesan • 1 tsp white sesame seeds • 1 tsp black sesame seeds • a pinch of paprika SOUP: • 1 ¾ lb asparagus (about 50 spears) • 2 medium onions • 1 small leek • 2 tbsp olive oil • 3 cups chicken stock • ⅔ cup crème fraîche • 1 tbsp finely chopped chives • salt & freshly ground black pepper GARNISH: • asparagus tips from the asparagus • 6 small new potatoes • 2 tbsp butter • handful of fresh chervil DIRECTIONS PARMESAN STRAWS: 1. Roll out the pastry on a floured board to a size of 10 inches square and a thickness of ⅛ inch. Glaze all over with the egg and sprinkle with the chives, parmesan, sesame seeds and paprika. 2. Chill for 10 minutes in the refrigerator (this makes the pastry much easier to cut) then, using a longbladed knife, cut 18 long points then chill again. 3. Preheat the oven to 375°F and bake the straws for 12-15 minutes. DIRECTIONS SOUP: 1. Snap off and discard the tough, woody bottom section of the asparagus stalks. Cut off the tips to use for the garnish. Chop the remaining stalks into 1 cm (½ inch) sections. 2. Peel and finely dice the onions, wash and finely chop the leek. Cook them slowly in the olive oil in a heavy based pan over a low heat with a lid on, until the onion is translucent and the leek is very soft. Don’t allow them to brown as this will spoil the colour of the soup. 3. Bring the chicken stock to the boil in another

62

pan. Cook the asparagus tips in the stock for 3-5 minutes until tender, plunge them into cold water, drain and keep on one side. 4. Dice the new potatoes, cook them in the stock until tender, drain and keep on one side. 5. Once the onion and leek are soft, add the chicken stock and asparagus stems to the pan. Cook for 10-12 minutes until the asparagus is tender. Don’t overcook or the asparagus becomes a very dull colour. 6. Remove from the heat and cool before blending it to a silky smooth consistency using a liquidizer or a stick blender. 7. To serve the soup, reheat it thoroughly. Whisk in the crème fraîche and chives, add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Meanwhile, reheat the asparagus tips and diced new potato in the butter. 9. Pour the soup into pre-warmed cups or bowls and top with a spoon of diced potato, a few asparagus tips and a pretty sprig of chervil. Serve with a couple of parmesan straws.

4. Cut each fig into 3 segments. 5. Tear each mozzarella ball into 6 pieces. 6. Arrange 3 pieces each of peach, fig and mozzarella alternately around each plate in a circle. 7. Place a little bundle of arugula leaves in the centre. 8. Sprinkle on a few spiced pecans. 9. Spoon a little walnut oil and then the raspberry vinegar over the salad. 10. Finish with a twist of black pepper and a twist of salt. Serve immediately.

CREAMED CHICKEN SERVES: 4

SALAD OF PROSCUITTOWRAPPED PEACHES SERVES: 4

INGREDIENTS: • ½ cup pecan halves • 2 tbsp light olive oil • salt, pepper, brown sugar & chili powder • 2 large, perfectly ripe yellow peaches • 12 slices of prosciutto • 4 ripe figs • 2 balls of buffalo mozzarella (250g) • handful of washed arugula • 8 tbsp walnut oil • 4 tbsp raspberry vinegar • freshly ground black pepper • freshly milled sea salt DIRECTIONS: 1. To prepare the spiced pecans, place them on a baking tray, drizzle the oil over them and sprinkle with salt, pepper, sugar and chili powder. Shake the tray to distribute the seasoning evenly. Bake at 325°F for 12-15 minutes. Leave to cool. 2. Cut each peach into 6 segments. I leave the skin on, but you can peel them for those who don’t like the ‘furry-ness’ of peach skin. 3. Wrap one piece of prosciutto around each segment of peach.

INGREDIENTS: • 30g large dried morels • 150g smoked streaky bacon (about 6 slices) • 6 shallots • 2 cloves garlic • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp butter • 4 chicken breasts (skin on) • a few sprigs of fresh thyme • 1 cup dry white wine • ⅔ cup whipping cream • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 225g Camargue Red rice (uncooked weight) DIRECTIONS: 1. Soak the dried morels in cold water for about 20 minutes to reconstitute them. Rinse thoroughly and dry them on kitchen paper. 2. Dice the bacon and the shallots roughly and crush the garlic. 3. In a heavy-based casserole pan, heat the oil and add the bacon, fry until crisp, then set aside. In the same pan, fry the shallots and garlic until golden, then set aside. Lastly, cook the morels in butter for a couple of minutes then remove them from the pan. 4. Return pan to the heat and sear the chicken breasts on both sides over a high heat. The skin should be very crisp and a rich golden colour. 5. Return the bacon, shallots, garlic and morels to the casserole pan with the chicken. Add the sprigs of fresh thyme and pour in the white wine and cream. 6. Bring to a very gentle simmer and cook slowly for 20 minutes with the lid on. 7. Leave to stand for 10 minutes. Check the seasoning and add more salt or pepper if necessary. 8. Serve with Camargue red rice or your favourite kind of rice (cooked as per the instructions on the package).

INGREDIENTS FROSTED ROSE PETALS: •A handful of pink or white rose petals •1 free-range large egg white lightly beaten •¼ cup caster sugar CAKE: •225g butter •I cup golden caster sugar •5 large free-range eggs, separated •1 cup plain flour •1 ¼ tsp baking powder •1 cup ground almonds •1 tsp natural almond essence •A few drops of natural pink colouring •1 small jar of rose petal jelly (or any red fruit jelly)

8. Fold them into the cake mixture carefully in 3 batches. 9. Divide the mixture between the tins and spread it evenly with a slight hollow in the centre. 10. Bake for 15-20 minutes; when cooked it will feel springy to the touch. 11. Leave to cool in the tins for a few minutes before removing and placing on a wire rack to cool completely. 12. While the cake is cooking, make the butter cream: Sift the icing sugar into a bowl and add the butter. Beat with a hand mixer for a couple of minutes. Add the rose water, pink colouring and just as much of the milk as you need to achieve a creamy spreadable texture. To assemble the cake: Spread one of the cake layers with butter cream and one with rose-petal jelly and sandwich together. Spread the top with butter cream. Take a third cake layer and spread with rose-petal jelly and place on top with the jelly-side down. Spread the top with butter cream. Repeat with the fourth layer, finishing with a topping of butter cream. Spread the remaining butter cream around the sides of the cake, taking care to finish it neatly. Position the white chocolate sticks all around the outside of the cake. Just before serving, sprinkle with the rose petals and position birthday candles if required.

ROSE BUTTER CREAM: •3 ½ cups icing sugar •250g soft butter •1 tsp rose water •A few drops of natural pink colouring •A little milk if required TO DECORATE: • Approximately 50 white chocolate sticks or scrolls 1. Make the frosted rose petals the day before you make the cake: Holding one petal at a time, paint both sides with egg white and then sprinkle caster sugar over it. 2. Using tweezers gently shake off the excess sugar. Dry on a wire rack or on a sheet of baking parchment—leave for 24 hours to dry. (If you don’t have time to frost the petals you can use them ‘au-naturel’, or you can buy commercially made ones.) DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. 2. Butter the two cake tins and line the base of each with a circle of non-stick baking parchment. 3. Beat the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. 4. Add the egg yolks and mix well. 5. Sift the flour and baking powder over the cake mixture. Fold in as lightly as possible, using a large metal spoon. 6. Fold in the ground almonds, the almond essence and the pink colouring—enough to give a delicate rose pink shade to the cake. 7. Whisk the egg whites until they stand in soft peaks.

LEMON & LIME POSSET SERVES: 10-12

INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups whipping cream • ½ cup milk • ¾ cup caster sugar • 2 tbsp freshly pressed lemon juice • 2 tbsp freshly pressed lime juice • zest of 1 lime • zest of 1 lemon VANILLA SHORTBREAD FINGERS: • 125g butter, at room temperature • 2 tbsp golden caster sugar • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract • 1 cup plain flour • pinch of salt • 200g fresh blueberries SESAME CARAMEL SHARDS: • ½ cup caster sugar • 4 tbsp water • 2 tbsp sesame seeds

DIRECTIONS POSSET: 1. Bring the cream, milk and sugar to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes. Watch it closely as it boils over easily. 2. Remove from the heat, grate the citrus zest directly into the cream and add the citrus juice, stir well. 3. Pour the mixture into 6 ramekins or demi-tasse cups. Leave to cool before putting in the refrigerator to chill for 2-3 hours. DIRECTIONS SHORTBREAD FINGERS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. 2. Line two baking sheets with either a silicon mat or non- stick baking parchment. 3. Cream together the butter and sugar. 4. Add the vanilla extract. Sift the flour and salt into the bowl and mix together. 5. Fill a piping bag with the mixture and, using a medium nozzle, pipe 24 uniform straight lengths (approx. 2 ¾ inch) onto the lined baking sheets. Set aside. 6. Place both trays of piped shortbread into the freezer for 15 minutes to firm up before baking. 7. Bake both batches of shortbread for 12-15 minutes. The shortbread fingers should be evenly golden coloured. 8. Remove from the oven, leave to cool on the baking trays for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire cooling rack. 9. Leave to firm up before storing in an airtight container. They keep for up to 4 days, but are at their best on the day they are made. DIRECTIONS SESAME CARAMEL SHARDS: 1. Place the sugar and water in a small heavy-based pan on a medium heat. Stir to dissolve the sugar and then allow to simmer until it becomes a rich gold colour. (Keep a close eye on it as it very quickly darkens and burns.) 2. Add the sesame seeds and then pour out in a thin layer onto a baking tray lined with a silicon sheet or parchment paper. 3. Leave for about 15 minutes to harden, before breaking it into small shards. If it is a damp or humid day it should be moved into an airtight container as soon as it is cold and hard or it will quickly become soft and sticky. 4. Present the posset on a dessert plate, spiked with a couple of caramel shards and accompanied by the blueberries and shortbread fingers.

HAIR HEALTH

DID YOU KNOW? Hair nutrients can be found in natural sources like millet, silica, and apples. They are used by hair follicles as building blocks or as promoters of hair growth. Apples, for example, contain Procyanidin B2, a known hair growth-promoting factor.

Is your hair in need of a boost? Is it shedding and starting to look dull? Then try nourishing your hair with natural nutrients and experience the difference.

STOP THE SHEDDING AND GET YOUR

HAIR VOLUME BACK

H

air sheds for many reasons but typically because we treat, wash and brush it regularly. Wear and tear puts demands on the hair and over time it can start to look dull and thin. But in many cases, we can benefit from certain nutrients that nourish the hair follicles and promote strong, healthy and beautiful hair.

BEAUTY FROM WITHIN The first thing you notice when taking Hair VolumeTM, is that your nails start getting stronger. Nails react faster than hair to a new supply of nutrients. But with time, you will notice that your hair stops shedding and starts to gain volume. Available at participating pharmacies, health food stores and online. For more information or to buy directly from the manufacturer, call 1-877-696-6734 or visit our website www.newnordic.ca

ONE TABLET A DAY Hair VolumeTM is a best-selling natural health product from Sweden. With just one tablet a day it provides more hair nutrients than any other Canadian competitor. In addition, Hair Volume is the only product that uses proven apple extract from Swedish apples, to promote your hair health and volume.

TEST YOURSELF Is your hair looking dull and thin? Do you experience hair shedding? Are your nails brittle? Do you want to nourish your hair naturally? Are you looking for more hair volume and shine?

I HAD GREAT RESULTS “I am 43 and have lost a lot of hair due to hormonal changes and 2 pregnancies. I have been on Hair Volume for 5 months and have noticed great results in growth and also found much less hair shedding in the shower and when I blow dry it. My hair feels stronger and thicker now. You do have to commit to using this product for a while to see full results, but it’s worth it. I strongly recommend Hair Volume!”

T

he trend of home staging has picked up momentum in recent years. As a stylist, I can certainly appreciate the basic principles behind a well-staged home, whether you’re planning to stay or sell your home. Rule #1 is, you only have one chance to make a good first impression. Here are some of my favourite styling tips to ensure you make a lasting impression, for all the right reasons. Step one is to view your home from the street. What’s the first thing you see? Bingo - the front door! This can be just the right feature to invite guests in or send them running for the hills. Choose a vibrant colour that sets your home apart from the rest, and ensure the hardware is bright and buffed. Finish the entry with colourful potted plants on either side for the ultimate welcome. Next, assess everything you see inside the home, from the walls and furnishings to the accessories, because even the seemingly minor details matter. A neutral colour palette is easy to work with and has wide appeal. This applies to your walls and furniture - particularly the big, expensive items that won’t be frequently replaced. Then, incorporate colour through your accessories.

TIP: Artwork is a great way to incorporate colour without commitment! When planning where to place furnishings and accessories - like art - look for the room’s natural focal point, and focus attention to that. A focal point is a place for the eye to rest. This could be a fireplace, a window or an interesting architectural feature. If your room doesn’t have one, make your own! Stand in the doorway, look into the space and see where your eyes naturally land. This is most likely your room’s focal point, and a good place to focus your furniture arrangement. Now that you’ve identified the obvious attention-grabbers in your space, consider the background elements, such as lighting and flooring. The most beautiful furnishings and artwork will be lost without proper lighting. A good lighting plan includes elements of ambient, task and accent lighting, and layered at a variety of heights - floor, tabletop, sconce and ceiling. Underfoot, stylists typically use rugs to highlight a room, increase visual impact, or to create division and definition within an open-concept layout. With that said, resist the urge to overuse rugs. They’ve certainly become a trendy piece, and are even appearing in layers, with one overlapping another. Tread carefully, as it’s a fine line between just enough and over-the-top. Last but not least, plan your accessories. Be selective; choose pieces that make you smile, help tell your story, or inspire you in some way. One of my go-to tricks is to arrange accessories in odd numbers. Don’t ask why this works, it just does. There’s something visually pleasing about groupings of three or five. To add more interest, use books or stacked magazines to vary height. A beautifully styled space is a careful balance between the big, obvious pieces that attract the eye, and the small, subtle details that evoke good feelings. If you walk into a room and something seems “off,” explore the elements above and you’ll likely find the missing link. When all the elements in a space work together, a room becomes “home.” VM

DETOX YOUR TIPS FOR RELEASING THE STRESS CLOGGING UP YOUR LIFE BY NATHALIE PLAMONDON-THOMAS

MIN

D

o you live a busy life, constantly rushing everywhere? Are you losing sleep over problems that haunt your mind? When surrounded by external pressure causing you to accumulate and store stress in your body, detoxing may give you temporary relief and yet, if your mind is still polluted, detoxing your body is like emptying a sink full of water with a teaspoon while the tap is still running. Sooner or later, the water will overflow. Understanding how stress is created so that you can get a grip on its effect, will allow you to detox your mind and stop its flow from altering your enjoyment of life.

WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is both a biological and physiological response to a threat we have no resources or ability to overcome. Stress is often an external pressure. It is what happens to us. It surrounds us every day. It is our alarm clock not going off, it is traffic, it is running out of milk, our boss holding us accountable for extra work, our child not feeling well, an unexpected expense, one of our parents falling ill, etc. The threats that cause stress trigger the release of cortisol, a stress hormone designed to shut down non-essential functions and give us a burst of energy in the event of attack by a lion, tiger or bear! This was very useful for our ancestors who lived in a very different era. We may think that our modern lifestyle is much more civilized than the pre-historic days. Unfortunately, we are often provided with plenty of opportunities for increased stress, and very little opportunity for relaxation and calm. Therefore, our stress responses are hyper-stimulated, and give little or no reprieve. For some, the body is under routine assault by metabolic processes intended to be life-saving, and that ironically now contribute to the increase of disease and premature death in our culture. PHYSICAL TIPS TO GET RID OF STRESS EXERCISE Have a good sweat! Any type of exercise will help us clear away stress momentarily. Exercise sends dopamine to our body which gives us a temporary boost of relaxation. Yes, the external pressure will still be there, but will not affect us for the time being. We will feel like a million dollars after exercise and at least for a time lessen the feeling of external pressure. DOWN TIME Make sure you take some time for yourself and have personal time to focus. Journal, meditate, write your daily gratitude. Even a few minutes with your eyes closed, inhaling and exhaling deeply will do the trick. SLEEP Go to bed early and ensure you have a full night’s sleep. Remove electronics from your bedroom, block all lights, wear earplugs or an eye mask, and let your logical mind fully rest. Repeat to yourself as you lay down that you will get a full regenerating night sleep and ask your unconscious mind to do the thinking for you

in the background, while you sleep. If any thoughts bother you, refrain from using your conscious mind to think about it, trust that your unconscious mind will do it while you recuperate and ask to receive answers in the morning. MENTAL WAYS TO GET RID OF STRESS Although physical ways to get rid of stress work, they are temporary. Just like your emotions. In fact, an emotion only lasts between 30 and 90 seconds. You enter the loop and then, in theory, should exit it. You can see how this is true for young children who are happy for one minute and raging the minute after. TRICK YOUR MIND TO AVOID CORTISOL PRODUCTION When an event happens, we consciously or, more often, subconsciously respond with emotion. When we respond with anxiety, anger, fear, etc. our brain sends cortisol to our body which has a negative impact on us. What would happen if we consciously chose a different response? Can we trick our minds to choose a response with a positive emotion instead? Yes, we can. Anxiety and excitement are both generated in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. In fact, the brain doesn’t even know the difference between them. Emotions are all equally created. However, their impact on our bodies is different. By turning anxiety into excitement, you send more positive chemicals throughout your body, like serotonin, oxytocin, and dopamine which will give you a healthy positive boost. A powerful emotion like anger or fear is not designed to make our life miserable but to help us grow. If we only experience love, tenderness, peace, etc. we would not develop self-mastery as fast. Powerful negative emotions put us on our toes so that we can learn from them and get to the next level in our life. So, next time you feel uncomfortable, remind yourself that it means you are getting to the next stage of your life. It is actually a good thing. You are growing. Get excited about it. Instead of feeling down and staying in your negative loop, step out of it by saying to yourself, “Okay, I am feeling scared; I hate it, but wait, that means that I will become good at something I wasn’t before. This is awesome, I am excited about climbing the next step in my journey.” By talking yourself out of the negative loop, and turning your negative emotion into excitement, you detoxify your mind by consciously choosing to allow positive hormones to thrive in your body. VICTORIA SHAW AGE: 23 OCCUPATION: Cosmetic Manager HEALTH ISSUE: Dry skin SYMPTOMS: From time to time and especially in winter, my skin

would become very dry, scaly, red and itchy. Of course, this made it difficult for my daily cosmetics routine, both from it affecting my appearance as well as just masking the problem. I knew I had to fix this once and for all. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: After investigation of natural approaches, I immediately began drinking 4-6 litres of water daily, and applying coconut oil to affected areas at night. On the advice of a dermatologist I switched to an all-natural brand of face wash and moisturizer for daily use. I also decided it was important to upgrade my cosmetics choices by trying the luxury brands that include all natural ingredients. THE RESULTS: My skin health is noticeably much better, and dry patches on my face and body have disappeared. Also, my makeup applies more flawlessly and I feel it leaves me with a more natural glow.

DANIELLA ENGLISH AGE: 34 OCCUPATION: Writer at The Not So Single Life HEALTH ISSUE: Type 1 Diabetes SYMPTOMS: Through the stress of a divorce with four small chil-

dren, my diabetes was increasingly difficult to manage. Stress plays a huge role in diabetes management and was really affecting my blood sugar levels and my overall emotional well-being. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: Between an insulin pump and a Continuous Glucose Monitoring system, I regulate my blood sugar levels. That aside, I find that yoga and meditation really contribute to stabilizing my stress levels which in turn, help me keep my blood sugar levels regulated. THE RESULTS: While I will forever be on insulin, these lifestyle changes have made such a difference on my overall well being and really affect my daily interactions with myself and others.

HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA OFFERS MANY TREATS

BY BONNIE SIEGLER

H

ershey – simply mention the word and it immediately conjures up the sweet smell of chocolate. But did you know there is actually a Hershey, Pennsylvania, a community located 14 miles east of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania? It is often referred to as Chocolate Town USA or The Sweetest Place on Earth…and for good reason. Within this 14 square mile town is Hershey Park, Hershey Gardens, the Hershey Company, Hershey Bar and even Hotel Hershey, among other chocolate-laden attractions. Being a chocoholic from an early age, visiting this fantasy-like place was a dream come true. I took along a photo of myself at age five holding a Hershey’s chocolate bar the size of my arm for reflection. Here’s a 36-hour rundown of activities suitable for any age.

72

THINGS TO DO:

1. GOLF: Hershey is home to several challenging and beautifully maintained golf courses. There is the 9-hole Spring Creek Golf Course; the Hershey Country Club with two championship level courses; and Deer Valley Golf Course. I hit a few on the 9-hole course before I gave up, but my husband finished with no problem. I was relegated to driving the golf cart. 2. CHOCOLATE MUSEUM: The Hershey Story is the official museum and located—where else? Chocolate Avenue! The museum gives details on Milton S. Hershey’s life and the town that bears his name. Fun for all ages with interactive displays. Find out why Hershey has become synonymous with the chocolate bar and a must-have ingredient for S’mores.

3. GARDENS: Hershey Gardens was planned to be a simple garden of roses that Mr. Hershey had requested back in 1937. The rose garden has now blossomed into 23 acres of beautiful foliage overlooking the town of Hershey. There’s also a Children’s Garden and Butterfly Atrium on the grounds. I was more intrigued with the butterfly atrium than the actual rose garden which wasn’t in full flower when I visited. But returning guests told me it’s glorious when the roses are abloom. The scent must be intoxicating. 4. SHOPPING: There’s more to buy than just stocking up on sweets at the Hershey’s Chocolate World. Look for The Spa Boutique, The Shops at The Hershey Hotel, Tanger Outlets-with over 50 stores from Ralph Lauren to Coach, and other little shops all within the town of Hershey. I picked up some cocoainfused body lotion and hand cream thinking this will help my chocolate urges…while consuming less calories. 5. EVENTS: Local events are always happening. The first few weeks in April, partake in Hershey’s Springtime Hop, and in June many live musical acts will be performing, from Faith Hill and Tim McGraw to Imagine Dragons. There’s something for everyone’s musical tastes. 6. AUTO MUSEUM: Looking for something not chocolate? I really wasn’t but I was reminded that this sojourn wasn’t all about me. So, a visit to the Antique Automobile Club American Museum featuring car histories and interactive exhibits turned into a nice several hours. Classic cars, bikes, and buses are exhibited throughout the 3-floor museum where, as I did, you

may enjoy the “cruise through time”. Each decade was featured with unique backdrops and settings. Two of my favorite exhibits were the art deco of the 30s, and the drive-in setting of the 50s and 60s. The latter brought me back to a time when we piled friends in the car trunk to avoid paying the $1.00 admission which was the cost of a film back then. Add window-mounted speakers with poor audio and you had a perfect summer evening. Don’t miss out on seeing the bus from Forest Gump and the one from Speed. Director of Marketing, Nancy Gates, said the 2018 summer exhibit, which runs from May to October, is Six Generations of Mustangs. My husband is already planning a return visit – the personal favorite car of his youth was a white Shelby Mustang with light blue striping. I was more enthralled to see Whitney Houston’s first limo--a Rolls Royce. 7. RELAXATION: After consuming what felt like the entire Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory I was instructed to try a spa. The MeltSpa by Hershey offers a Chocolate Escape Package which is cocoa-infused scrub, wrap and massage. Their receptionist, Peyton, proceeded to tell me about all the anti-oxidant benefits of dark chocolate which helped banish my previous lunchtime guilt of eating 3 Reese’s cups. And as Peyton had told me I would feel from the outset of my chocolate escape, I left totally relaxed. The Spa at Hershey Hotel is a luxurious experience of relaxation and rejuvenation and more a destination spa than the day spa environment in MeltSpa. The Emerald Springs Spa takes chocolate out of the stress-reducing equation for any treatment in a serene environment. Since I only had 36 hours in The Sweetest Place on Earth, MeltSpa was a perfect getaway for me. VM JOINT CARE 2018 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

YOUR HOROSCOPE BY ROB SHAW

Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19) Work and home are at odds and demand much of your time. Meet responsibilities now and extra work brings success later. Hidden matters are revealed and it’s best to confront adversaries or those trying to control you with your intellect. Your position is stronger than you think.

Taurus (Apr 20–May 20) You are building new foundations and structures in your life. Never afraid of hard work, Bulls will find they have more resources now, and you are paving the way for growth in a few areas—like at work or in educational pursuits. You are an inspiration for others as your leadership ability is highlighted.

Gemini (May 21–June 21) Managing finances will limit cash flow issues. Your tendency to extravagance needs some work and now is a time to be more responsible with money. Take care that you are not deceived by yourself or others and make an effort to carefully review any new opportunity presented now.

Cancer (June 22–July 22) You are a great problem-solver as you never give up. Stop with the worrying and start tackling each job one-by-one and you’ll achieve your goals. Home and family should be your respite from work stress, so instead of hibernating tell them you need pampering. Love and romance are also highlighted.

Leo (July 23–Aug 22) Sometimes you bore easily, and although this past year brought some trouble you are still in transition. Health problems now are likely stress-related so take some time to play, meditate, or relax and read a book. A bombastic attitude now is the result of your own folly. It’s time to mend fences with humility.

Virgo (Aug 23–Sept 22) You may be griping about something that is out of your control but a change is good. Discover how you can work with the proposed changes but if you must leave a situation behind then make a clean break and move forward. This new direction will likely be very good for you.

Libra (Sept 23–Oct 23) It’s one thing to have great ideas but it’s another to act on them. You can’t do everything you would like so stay balanced 74

and act only on what you have time and money for now. Do not borrow or waste either resource, yet this is still a very good period for you to create a great life.

Scorpio (Oct 24–Nov 21) You thrive on hard work normally but if you have to pick up someone else’s “slack” you won’t feel happy about that as you believe everyone should carry their weight. Take care not to push your own weight around however, particularly around the boss, to avoid making it worse.

Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21) Financial matters need your attention, particularly if you are about to spend for your home or other major expense. Home renovations maybe? Best to not move too quickly. Take extra care while traveling now to not lose belongings, miss reservations or be fooled by another’s deceitful ways.

Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19) Now is a good time to clear away anything old and out-worn (including ideas). First, recognize you can’t keep everything, even if it was once good for you, and hang onto only the basic essentials needed now. That way you’ll have more room for the good stuff coming just around the corner.

Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) You may have been working diligently behind the scenes to bring about something new and wonderful. Your heart and mind have been inundated with little revelations about yourself for the past year and this trend only continues. Work these gifts into your life and circle of friends and family.

Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) You grumble about this current period of hard work yet the time is good for you overall. You work best in a group so ensure the current group is the best one for you. A revelation or two will provide more clarity perhaps from within yourself. Listen to that “voice in your head” for best counsel now. VM
