WARMS TO WINTER Photo Russell Baer

People like to say that Los Angeles, where I live, doesn’t have seasons. That’s not exactly true - we just have subtler seasons than most places. No matter where you live or how cold it gets, winter means colder weather and the feeling of winding down.

possible to have dry skin and pimples at the same time! So one winter ritual I always look forward to is a facial. A good aesthetician can look at what’s going on with your skin and help you figure out whether your current skincare routine is still working for you or if it’s time to make some changes.

I have a hard time talking myself into exercise that feels like exercise, so winter is the perfect time to trick myself into some sort of movement by heading outside. One of my favourite winter habits is some form of outdoor activitygoing for long walks through parks or the neighborhood can help to break up the winter blues and put myself back in a healthy headspace when I’m feeling stressed.

Usually by the time winter rolls around my closet is bursting with everything I’ve accumulated during the year, so I like to end the year with a closet purge. I go through everything and clear out what doesn’t fit or is just outdated and donate everything to a local organization that benefits the homeless in my area. It’s a great way to help people who need it, repurpose my clothes so they don’t end up in the trash, and clear out my wardrobe for new spring looks.

I’m also getting back to some healthy habits I lost track of during the hectic holidays, like starting the day with a quick yoga session and making the trip to the weekly farmer’s market for local, seasonal veggies. Just having fresh produce in the house inspires me to make healthier snack choices and crack open a cookbook to find a fun way to use whatever I’ve brought home. Chilly winter air is tough on my skin. My hands and face get so dry and flaky, which especially makes me crazy because I also struggle with adult acne. It shouldn’t be

I hope winter is bringing good energy and refreshing changes into your world as it does mine – and that you enjoy the winter Issue of Viva! Rebecca Metz stars on FX’s Better Things and the Disney Channel’s Coop & Cami Ask The World.

IKEA Canada reduces food waste by 31% in 2019, prevents more than 200,000 meals from going to waste IKEA Canada is pleased to announce it has achieved its goal of reducing food waste in its kitchens by over 30 per cent within one year of implementing a new food waste tracking program. This program is part of a larger global ambition to diminish food waste in all IKEA stores by 50 per cent before the end of 2020. More than 94,000 kilograms of food waste has been saved since the program started in Canada which is equivalent to approximately 200,000 meals. Nearly one third of all food that is harvested and produced in the world is lost or wasted every day, with roughly 35.5 million tonnes in Canada alone. Through a smart technology solution, IKEA Canada is now able to measure the food waste in its restaurants and bistros nationwide. This simple tool empowers IKEA Canada co-workers to better understand what is being wasted and why. They then can identify ways to prevent food waste in everyday operations, including more efficient meal planning and material handling. “Food is valuable and precious. We believe that everyone in the food chain has a role to play in preventing and reducing food waste,” said Melissa Mirowski, Sustainability Manager, IKEA Canada. “Our target is ambitious, but we believe that by setting actionable goals and drawing on the passion of our co-workers, we can help tackle Canada’s food waste challenge.” Read+

Imagine the fresh cool mountain breeze in the summer, a welcome change from the humid and sticky heat back home; and imagine a food that is the stuff of dreams, an array of colors, tastes and textures one more exotic and delicious than the last. All of this and more is available in the Alps region. Though the Alps are most famous for their stunning snow-capped mountain views and renown ski hills, they are quickly becoming the ‘it’ place for those wanting a complete getaway, in any season.

If you are not certain where to begin, the best place in Geneva, Switzerland. Geneva is where modernity and antiquity intersect. By way of example, Place du Bourg-de-Four, the city’s oldest area, is host to winding streets, with no short-

About an hour away is Annecy, France, dubbed the “Venice of the Alps.” This alpine town is not just about cobblestone streets, farmer’s markets and the crystal-blue lake that so many flocks to enjoy. Simply walk around the area – lose your way, if you will – in order to fully appreciate quaint French town life. The homes, shops, and pristine lakeside. In fact, add a dollop of excite-

ment like paddle-boarding, scuba or even yacht rentals, knowing that every photograph will have mountains in the background. Move along another hour and a half to the “piece de resistance”, Bourg Saint Maurice, France, a new hotspot for vacationers. There you’ll find a full slate of activities – for those who like a fast pace, those who prefer medium, or slow – depending on the mood you’re in. Club Med eight months ago opened a resort in the area, Arcs Panorama, overlooking the gorgeous snowcapped French Alps, in every direction. Those from Brazil, Israel, Russia, France, and Switzerland are availing themselves on the Alp ski hills in great numbers, as well as partaking in a plethora of summer activities. There is so much offered, four days should be the minimum stay if one wants to experience even a small fraction of what is available. If fresh air is what you’re after, enjoy a guided hike in the pristine forest, or even a scenic tour on horseback. For a faster, more titillating ride, hop on an electric bike, or mountain bike, and zip down the trails on two wheels; and if you want to take it up a notch, ride through the rapids on a white water

rafting excursion, sure to get your heart-rate pumping. The highlight for many is paragliding – floating a mile and a half in the air, over the trees, and seeing the snow-capped peaks up close at eye level as though living a scene from a James Bond film. But not everything has to be jaw-dropping, eye-popping and teeth-clenching if you don’t want it to be. For those seeking a more Zen experience, enjoy yoga or take a load off at the heated indoor and outdoor pools. Relax the muscles with a whirlpool bath or doze off with an oil massage. In fact, imagine being pampered by a different type of massage each day, because that is exactly what you can have.

All the amenities you could possibly want are right here.

Good Night, S Birds do it, bears do it, even insects do it. Sleep is a fundamental part of life that we simply cannot forego if we are to feel refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to tackle the many things in our day to day; be we a bear, a bug or a human. If sleep is so programmed into our DNA, then why is there so much confusion circulating around the topic? Read on as we delve into the nitty gritty of sleep and how you can get the most out of your Z’s. What happens when we lack sleep? There is an all too common perception that sleep is a waste of time; it is followed by expressions such as, “I’ll sleep when I die” and other references that place sleep in a category of a mundane task one must put up with, fight or control in favour of the preferred “productive” waking hours. However, evidence is mounting that these negative perceptions regarding sleep are erroneous at best and dangerous at worst. While still

not fully understood, we now know that poor sleep can have profound effects on our health. Sleep deprivation is linked to shorter lifespans and increased risk for obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline and depression. Lack of sleep can be so damaging that sleep deprivation can have a similar effect on your body as drinking alcohol. In fact, after 18 hours without sleep our driving is so compromised that it is comparable to having our blood alcohol levels at .05 (.08 is considered drunk). If that isn’t enough to get you napping, we also now know that sleep is anything but a passive state. Deep sleep helps to solidify memories for better recall, detoxifies our brains and repairs damaged cells

and DNA. So it behooves us all to wake up and smell the coffee… but perhaps not to consume too much after 4pm! Sleep-Wake Hygiene Long before turning to sleeping pills, there are many habits we can change in order to naturally encourage a healthy sleep-wake cycle. The key to sleep-wake hygiene is routine, routine, routine! Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can help

SOLVING

IMPOSTER SYNDROME

by Dr. Ilona Jerabek, Ph.D: President and Scientific Director of PsychTests AIM Inc.

New Study Looks at the Emotionally Corrosive Effect of Impostor Syndrome

O

n one end of the humility spectrum, there’s the braggers. It doesn’t matter if all they’ve done is fry an egg without burning it - the entire world must know of their accomplishments. Next, there’s the humble-braggers.

They think they’re being modest when they insist that they don’t understand why they received an award, why they got into the most prestigious university, or why they keep getting hit on, but in reality, they’re fishing for compliments. The truly humble seek neither praise nor reward, and wouldn’t care if not a single soul knew of their accomplishments. But the humility spectrum doesn’t end there. People who struggle with Impostor Syndrome, take humbleness to a distorted extreme. Not only do they significantly minimize their accomplishments, they also see themselves as frauds, and undeserving of any recognition. Unfortunately, according to a recent study conducted by Queendom.com, low self-esteem isn’t the only baggage these “impostors” carry with them. Analyzing fata from 12,259 people who took the Emotional Intelligence Test, researchers at Queendom compared the scores of people who struggle with Impostor Syndrome to those who don’t on a number of EQ traits.

64

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / STYLIST 2022 ISSUE

“People who struggle with Impostor Syndrome are unable to enjoy their successes, no matter how amazing their accomplishments are,” explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests, the parent company of Queendom. “They consider themselves frauds, and are terrified that other people will soon discover their ‘dirty little secret’. This isn’t necessarily because they really did lie and cheat their way to the top. Rather, victims of Impostor Syndrome genuinely believe that their success is the result of external and uncontrollable factors, like luck, or simply being at the right place at the right time. They discount the influence of their abilities, their intelligence, their persistence, and effort. As a result, their achievements feel tarnished. And as our study has revealed, people with IS are not only plagued by deep-rooted insecurities and self-esteem issues, they are also less confident, assertive, motivated, resilient, and happy than people who don’t have IS.

Victims of Impostor Syndrome genuinely believe that their success is the result of external and uncontrollable factors...

What’s disconcerting is that among the people in our sample who have Impostor Syndrome, 61% are women, with 83% of them being under the age of 30. So it’s not just women in high-ranking positions who are grappling with this, it’s also young girls who are unable to see how amazing and special they are.” Here are some tips for people with Imposter syndrome:

VIVA DIGITAL // SCAN THE QR CODES WITH YOUR MOBILE FOR READ THE COMPLETE ARTICLE ON VIVA SITE

• At its root, Impostor Syndrome is an issue of self-esteem: You feel you are unworthy of success and praise, which is further underlined by your inability to see your value. It would be a good idea to try to trace the origin of your low self-esteem, especially as it relates to achievement. Awareness is the first step to overcoming deeply seated issues. Here are some common causes of Impostor

Syndrome: - Growing up with parents who set extremely high standards in relation to academics and/or extracurricular activities. - Highly critical parenting, which exacerbated the feeling of not being good enough, no matter how well you performed or how hard you tried. - A lack of parental encouragement, praise, and responsiveness. - A highly competitive school and/or work environment. • Conduct a frank and objective analysis of each of your successes: What are all the personal factors that contributed to your achievement? For example, did your hard work, persistence, and determination play any role? Chances are that even if you had someone else’s help, your own individual efforts had a definite impact as well. Read+

A Mature Instagram Demographic is giving Millennials a run for their Money, Sharing Engaging Content While Challenging Taboos about Ageing

o doubt, ageing has received a bad wrap. When left in the hands of big media, women past a certain age are portrayed in ways that leave them feeling unadmired and uninspired. Actresses past a certain age complain that they must play mothers or grandmothers, are dismissed from playing the leading role and treated in ways that leave them feeling deflated. Naturally, women find their representation inaccurate, hurtful and unfair and a new generation of technologically savvy women are fighting back through social media, hosting engaging social media accounts that challenge our common held perceptions about ageing, fashion and everything in between. We spoke to some stunning starlets in their own right about what keeps them inspired and looking so darn hot, for a woman of any age!

What inspires you to live a beautiful life? I have the luxury not to go into an office every day. Since I was a teen I knew I would never work in an office and would travel the world. I thought about becoming a flight attendant because for me it was the only way I could imagine the possibility to being able to travel. I never imagined then that it would be possible to carve out the life that I am living today. What is the secret to a happy and healthy life? To be true to the self. By this I mean to know what you want, what is very primordial for you, specific to you and to know your priorities in life. I also live by the philosophy that one must always look for the hidden gift in hard times, to be curious and to desire to learn like a child. Also, to have common sense without forgetting to dream, to see beauty in tiny things, to go with the flow instead of refusing situations that are on our path because resistance brings suffering. What does it mean to be body Proud? Maybe a kind of pride to have passed all these years learning from my body, proud of the way it repairs itself as he does. For me it is more about feeling good and feeling fulfilled, in being healthy and at peace. Taking care of our bodies should be our priority to be able to go on the long run that is the journey of life and not to be a burden on our families and the collective. Only we can take care of our bodies, nobody can do it for us. Nobody will exercise for us or know better than us what is right for us, but for this we have to be present to it to be in tune. Embrace greys or no way? I never rejected my white hair, that came very early. I found these to be like beautiful silver threads in my dark hair when I was around 11 years old and never dyed STYLIST 2022 ISSUE / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

them and never even thought of dying them despite what I was hearing around me. I must say that when I was a teen it was also like an act of rebellion not to dye my hair while the adults around me “advised “ to do so. How do you stay sexy and any age? Maybe because for me being sexy is not about an exterior appearance, it is about a state of mind. It is about having a spirit that is young and alive. It is also about being myself with my style and certainly not about copying trends of the moment. Do you have a diet or workout regimen that you follow? I don’t, I weight the same weight as 40 years ago, I can gain 2 to 4 pounds if I don’t exercise and eat too much, sometimes that happens but I can loose them easily just by eating less and exercising. I am mostly Vegetarian and fruitarian. I very rarely eat meat and when I do, wild as possible or grass feed- like Bison. I have red meat maybe once every 2 to 3 months. I also love nuts, foods rich in healthy fats, greens, fresh, raw or slightly steamed with a great steamer that I’ve been using since 1987: The Vitaliseur de Marion. What does an average day look like with regards to what you eat and how you take care of your body? My day when I am at home starts by waking up around 6am, having hot water with lemon or fresh ginger tea, then reading my emails. Then I shower, do yoga, have a coffee and prepare my breakfast- that is usually around 11 am, sometimes I just eat some fruits, sometimes bread butter and dark chocolate… I just follow my desire in the moment, I don’t like routines so it varies. Then I work on my projects or go walking on the beach, there I also do some exercise. I have another meal around 5 to 6 pm, then work or reading or watching movies, shower or bath then going to bed around 10 or 11pm trying to read as I fall asleep. I sleep very well, around 7 to 68

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / STYLIST 2022 ISSUE

8 hours unless I am on a special project where I need to work all night and sleep only a few hours. When I travel I adapt to the situation. How have you embraced social media and why? I was introduced to social media at the beginning of Facebook by my daughter. I had absolutely no idea what it was and now I realize that it is an amazing tool for spreading information, opening consciousness, offering options and inspiring others. What has having a successful Instagram account mean to you? How has it helped your confidence and your business? What did you start it? I posted on Instagram just things that I like at the beginning and still do but slowly it became a tool for business especially because I do through a lot of things , self portraits and this since long before social medias era . I didn’t need this to built ma confidence as I had not this issue but it is more about the business part .It is a great window to show my brand not only as model but also as social entrepreneur and as designer. I shoot for clients on myself but I also can model and shoot my own products and this is fantastic! What advice would you give to women who want to live a healthier, more beautiful and interesting life? At a very personal level, the highest vibration of your soul, you agreed to this journey as you are so trust the process even through the very difficult times, these are there to experiment and to stimulate something inside of us to give us the possibility to change and to enjoy life. I think the best way to age is to never think about it and to be passionate. When you are passionate you create and are out of time, time does not have a grip on you and seems to be sliding. When I was younger, living in couple was the most important thing. When I was seeing women over 50 alone I found this very

sad. But now I turned 64 and for many years I am single and I am living the best years of my life, something I could never imagine would possible- a love state without a subject. @yazemeenah www.yazemeenah.com Photos: Robin Black

Most important is the fact that I realized that life is too short to worry about unnecessary things, too short to wear boring clothes and too short to worry about what others think of you. Enjoy life and don’t delay your wishes! How have you embraced social media and why? About a year ago I started to post on my instagram account : dressandgo.nl Just because I wanted to inspire other women of my age group to be themselves, to be different, to be unique and to shine! To this day, it has brought me a lot of friendships, business opportunities and I was even asked to model for a brand in Amsterdam. I mostly post pictures of my outfits, my hair and of the photoshoots I’ve been asked to do. I love it, I embrace it and it makes me proud of who I am.

Embrace greys of no way?! Grey is great. Also, grey hair belongs to a certain age. It looks good on your skin so I embrace my grey hair and I don’t think it’s grey, it’s a beautiful silver. I recommend to search for a good hairdresser that can help you with your transformation to grey hair. Silver hair is wonderful to wear. How do you feel about skin treatments, lasers, botox or others? I am positive about a good skin treatment to keep your skin vital and healthy but I prefer to keep it as natural as possible because I think Botox and fillers change your own look. Be proud of your age and embrace the small lines on your face, they make you unique. I also think that

V I VA

What has been the biggest transformational change that you have seen in your mind, body, mood since you committed to a healthy lifestyle? Most important is the fact that I realized that life is too short to worry about unnecessary things, too short to wear boring clothes and too short to worry about what others think of you. Enjoy life and don’t delay your wishes! What does style mean to you. Why is style important? How does it reflect in your life? Style is very important to me, because it reinforces who I am. Being a fashion stylist and helping other women to find their own style is more than satisfying. Great styling makes you look and feel stronger, because if it’s yours, it suits you like no other. Finding your own style is not that easy. It’s a project of finding the way you want to look, what you want to express and say with your outfit. I wish every woman to look on her best. Especially when we get older. Because we deserve it.

What does it mean to be body proud? Getting older is an issue that many women struggle with. If you are over 40 you should be proud of what your body has brought you up till now and be proud! What inspires you to live a beautiful life? I enjoy life in general. We live in a country that gives us the freedom to be who we want to be and wear what we like. I take advantage of that and enjoy expressing myself. I feel free and as a result, I feel happy.

/

you can push your limits using (botox, fillers) to look like someone you are not. Do you have a diet or work-out regimen that you follow? For me, no gym or diet. I try to eat as varied a diet as possible and a bit of everything. My motto is, don’t overdo it in anything. As for my body, my life is full of movement, so that’s the best way to stay in shape. What is your thought on Hats? I have at least 15 different hats, so it indicates that I am a hat fan. On instagram, I show them a lot. Hats give you a classy look. Not many women dare to wear them because you stand out but I’m of the philosophy that fashion is a fun thing to embrace and nothing to hide from.

How do you overcome limitations? You make your own limitations. Do what feels good for you and then it’s ok! We are old enough to know!!! What would you like to say to women who want to live a healthier, more beautiful and interesting life? Where should they begin? 3. Tunde Milstein What inspires you to live your best life? Life is beautiful and I want to enjoy every moment of my years with the energy and youthful vitality that comes with being active and fit. I have gratitude for even the smallest things that most people take for granted. When you appreciate the love and beauty around yourself, your energy shifts, and you radiate happiness and beauty that people can’t resist. Life philosophy? Beauty and sex appeal have no expiration date, I don’t believe in age, I believe in energy, so don’t let age dictate what you can and cannot do. How do you keep fit? As a professional athlete, I have a very hard training and contest prep. Even during my off season, my routine involves cardio nearly every day, 4 or 5 days per week of weight training, plus Yoga and dance when I can fit them into my busy schedule. I started to train and compete at age 50, so my pro athlete status is quite recent. Are you proud of your body? In my late 40’s, my body started to change in ways that made me unhappy. Everything I had done before was no longer working and I started to feel tired, old and soft. Hormonal shifts caused me to suffer terrible migraines. Something had to be done, I decided to take back control which began the fitness journey that has given me new life these last 5 years. I am proud of my body because every muscle, every line, and every curve are something that I worked so very hard for. I’m proud

What tips can you give to women? Our body was meant to move, so keep moving! Find what physical activities interest you and pursue it with joy. Everybody must include some kind of weight training or resistance training into their lifestyle, It is nothing short than the very fountain of youth. Above all, be consistent. Those who stay the course over the long term have the best success. How do you manage your diet? I was always health conscience and very mindful of eating healthy. As a pro competitor, I have a very strict meal prep that has me eat very specific amounts of Macro nutrients (protein, carbs, and fats) 5 or 6 meals per day. This level of discipline is maintained for up to 4 months in preparation for a bikini competition. In the real world, while not in contest mode, I stick to an organic, clean, well balanced diet that of course includes occasional cheats and treats. Tips? In today’s world, there is endless nutritional advice to found. The most important thing is to educate yourself and discover what are the healthiest choices for you. If I can give one tip it would be to avoid sugar as much as possible, it only causes you damage. Try to eat a balanced diet, eat clean, organic, unprocessed food and remember if you enjoy the occasional fattening meal or dessert, make sure that you eat it with joy, not guilt. Do you have any beauty tips for skin/ hair? Just like one must be mindful of what goes into your body, we equally must be careful of what goes on our skin. I stick to high quality, creams. moisturizers and makeup, that have minimal harmful chemicals. I still dye my hair, not because I’m afraid of have beautiful white hair, but because there are still so many choices of beautiful colors to enjoy.

Advice on ageing gracefully, feeling and looking your best? Love and happiness and are the elements that fuel longevity. Not just the love in your relationships and love for life, but love for yourself. Wake up your capacity to experience joy in all things. All women are beautiful in their own way. You are beautiful, so own it, and radiate it. Tips and advice on fashion and styling? Some people feel that you must dress age appropriate, I think that what they mean is a woman my age should dress conservatively. I don’t believe you should automatically be conservative and hide your body just because you’re over 45. Of course some tight, super short Jr. size dresses don’t look right on a mature woman even if they have body for it, it may actually make them seem older. I think you should try to dress classy, be sophisticated, and be sexy, to celebrate whatever age you are, instead of trying to too hard to look younger. I must add that on a fit body, bikini’s have no age limit! How to avoid ageing cliches? It is a cliche to use your age as an excuse to let yourself go. 50 is truly the new 30, as 70 is the new 50. Being fit, youthful and healthy as possible, is a choice to be made. Don’t choose old fashioned thinking that old has to equal advancing poor health and disease. You can maintain an active lifestyle all the days of your life. Do you have marriage or dating tips? Whether you are dating or marrying, always choose a partner that allows

you to be yourself. Do not pretend to be something different than you are for anyone, it will only result in disappointment and unhappiness. What does it mean to break norms or boundaries to you? I want to break the norm of the expectation that you are supposed to look and feel old after a certain age, or more importantly that your value as a woman should never decline with age. This is a lesson that I teach my own Daughter. What are you trying to show or teach women? I made it my mission to inspire women to never give up and strive to be your best regardless of what stage you are at physically and emotionally. Never let anyone take away the power you were born with, your mind, your beauty, and your femininity. I hope to be a role model that proves that your age will not determine what you can achieve. If you have the courage to take the first step, then your own journey has begun. Do you take any supplements or anything like that or help you look and feel your best? Where do I start!!? I take many high quality micro nutrients as recommended by my nutritionist. I swear by therapeutic grade essential oils in every area of my life. But my #1 nutrition supplement are Herbalife products. Many of my wellness clients come to me for help, and

Meditation and Yoga are important part of keeping my mind & body powerful and flexible. How did you get into modeling and social media? What advice would you give to women looking to update their look or join social media? Social Media has given millions of people the opportunity to be out there in the world, and countless women to be “models”. I started my instagram and facebook pages as tools to be seen and spread my positive message to as many people as possible. On social media, know what you want to be, and what your focus is, then be consistent. Always post quality photography and have enough content to post often. TUNE INTO YOUR BODY A simple idea it may be, but one that is the key to unlocking the box to the other stress and anxiety relief techniques that we shall examine. Be aware of the degree of stress that you’re experiencing at any one moment in time.

The people are not the only aspect of the show that transfers, so do the situations the characters find themselves in. Do these two quotes from The Office strike a chord? Jim Halpert: Because right now, this is a job. If I advance any higher, this would be my career. And if this were my career, I’d have to throw myself in front of a train. Michael Scott: This is our receptionist, Pam. If you think she’s cute now, you should have seen her a few years ago. These lines may be funny yet they point to something basic and fundamental pertaining to the workplace: stress and more specifically work-related stress. The UK Health and Safety at Work Executive (HSE); the UK government’s Work-related health and safety body define work-related stress as ìthe adverse reaction a person has to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed upon them.” A certain degree of stress is healthy, keeps us on our toes and drives us to achieve. In essence, stress will cause us to lead more fulfilling lives. The difficulty is here, however, is how do we create a healthy balance of stress because too much stress and anxiety are certainly harmful to your health and well-being? What techniques can we apply to encourage stress and anxiety relief in our lives? Stay with me for a short while and we’ll look at 10 simple ideas to initiate stress and anxiety relief at work.

Measure your stress level on a scale of 1-10, this is the gauge for measuring all other stress levels. During the day check into the scale and not the level of tension that you’re feeling: are your shoulders hunched and tense; how does your gut feel, is it tight and churning; is your jaw clenched?

colours of the sky in your mind, soar to your favourite place, and do not wait for that distant vacation; go there today. The more vivid the images the better this stress and anxiety relief technique will work. TAKE TIME TO CHALLENGE YOUR IRRATIONAL THOUGHTS

TAKE TIME TO MOVE Movement is a great way to reduce stress levels. Just by getting out of your seat and moving around, you will find that you will feel a measure of stress and anxiety relief. A brisk walk during your lunch break and a short jogging session at the end of the day will reduce tension. Generally aim to keep fit anyway. TAKE TIME FOR DEEP BREATHING Simply breaths deeply, inhaling through the nostrils, after holding the breath for a count of three exhale slowly through the mouth. TAKE TIME TO USE THE POWER OF YOUR MIND OF IMAGERY This is another great way to bring stress and anxiety relief into the workplace. Just take a moment or two to imagine that you are somewhere else. Hear the sound of the sea, create the vivid

Be aware of your inner voice and the messages that it is sending to you. Often these thoughts are based on previous mind conditioning and the thoughts will be harmful and create unnecessary levels of stress. For example, if you are under pressure to get something done by a particular time you may find yourself thinking” I must get this done or else I’m fired and I’ll need to find another job!” This is probably not the case and if it is then you’re probably better looking for another job anyway. TAKE TIME TO PLAN WORK INTO SMALLER MANAGEABLE TASKS A large task can be overwhelming and may need to be broken down into simpler easier to complete jobs. We forget that a more step-by-step target approach is a way to feel a greater sense of achievement after each step is finished. Give yourself a reward for completing the smaller tasks and do not wait for the final task before you give yourself a pat on the back.

TAKE TIME TO REDUCE CAFFEINE INTAKE Have you ever seen a two-year-old completely wired after chomping through a few cookies or drinking cola? Well, without realizing it that it ís exactly what happens to all of us when we take in too much sugar or caffeine. However, unlike the nipper at home, we can’t run around the office making airplane noises, we just carry the excess stress. TAKE TIME TO BLOW OFF STEAM BUT FAIRLY Don’t think that you can’t vent a little, but just remember words spoken in anger can haunt you for a long time if theyíre read or overheard by the wrong person. Donít put anything in the email you donít want the whole office to see. TAKE TIME TO UNDERSTAND THAT A LITTLE STRESS IS WORTHWHILE Finally, remember that it ís natural to feel stressed when you leave your comfort zone. Some stress must be endured as you expand your horizons, learn new tasks and earn new responsibilities. That kind of stress may not be much fun, but in the long run, itís worth it!

I started to do this on business trips, at home, in the office. Then, I started helping my colleagues on the trading floor with their stress, anxiety and weight gain. My friends, also, none of whom worked on Wall Street. I realized there was a big gap in the health and wellness industry, and I could go out there and create it. I’d done thousands of hours in yoga training, nutrition school, meditation school. I’d tested it. I was doing classes in my loft. So, I quit my job at Morgan Stanley to start I.AM.YOU, first boutique studio of its kind. Quitting Wall Street was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. First of all, it was lucrative, and it was my dream to work on Wall Street. I just saw this other opportunity from the business sense, and also in a ‘making people better’ sense. What were the most important tools to start a wellness business? What was the idea behind starting I.AM.YOU? I grew up being an athlete. I was working on Wall Street and absolutely loved it. It’s a myth that I quit my job because I was burned out, or that it was a ‘toxic environment’. Nothing could be further from the truth. Often I was on the trading floor at 5:30am, and having the late dinners. I started to swap my daily running 60 miles a week, for a combination of yoga and daily nutrition.

Knowledge. There are few barriers to entry in the wellness industry, so the more you actually know about the subject you are targeting or specializing in, the more power you will have to truly carve out your niche. I took multiple courses in yoga teaching, anatomy, nutrition, ancient yoga philosophy, and meditation which I leveraged to enhance the customer experience. Perhaps the clients did

and I kept seeing these same problems women were coming into. We can have all this hoopla about equal pay and breaking the glass ceiling, but there are fundamental steps on the road to get to that point that need to be hit. You need coaching and assistance to get there – not a sisterhood, not a therapy group. The Association is that network. We have a proprietary methodology in meetings, structured and lead by coaches. They help women advance in their career. What is Delphos about? Impact investments is the concept of creating change. If we look at where

growth in the world is going to happen, it is not going to have strength in the western markets, as US and Europe, but in emerging markets, like India, Africa, Latin America. That’s where certain problems need to be solved for that growth to happen, meaning, broadband in Nigeria. Sure, the NGOs can dump all this money in for things that are actually useful and necessary. But there is a fundamental problem. That micro-financed loan you are giving is for one person. We are looking to lay the groundwork to lay Wifi, for instance, so that women can use the internet, and have a direct to consumer line.

What’s your next book, Between the Waves, about? It’s a book on transitions. If you really look at the books out there on the market, there’s books about business, how to manage pivots when you are in a start-up, self-help, but no one really gets to you in the transition – career or personal. Here are the tools to get you through that other side. Because there are some really dark places in that transition period, and it feels like you have no resources to go to. This is what that book tries to help you through.

RESERVE-BASED BUSINESSES GO GLOBAL AS INDIGENOUS ENTREPRENEURS TAP INTO E-COMMERCE THE INTERNET HAS HELPED ON-RESERVE SMALL BUSINESSES GO GLOBAL LIKE NEVER BEFORE, THOUGH A LACK OF CAPITAL OR INTERNET ACCESS IS STILL A BARRIER FOR SOME. Through their online store and gallery shop, Sapling & Flint, the twin sisters have created an opportunity to be their own bosses, support their families and remain in their home village. Indigenous entrepreneurs like the Brant sisters are increasingly turning to e-commerce as a way to stay in their communities and build businesses, simultaneously creating new jobs and economic opportunities for others on reserve. “E-commerce has given me an opportunity to pursue the things that I’m passionate about, while being able to live in the place that I want to live and to thrive in,” Dakota Brant says. “THERE’S DEFINITELY GOING TO BE A HUGE SURGE OF OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW INDIGENOUS BUSINESSES TO GROW.”

Ms. Brant has a master’s degree in community planning from the University of British Columbia, and her sister is a trained jeweller who studied at George Brown College in Toronto. Ms. Brant has lived and worked elsewhere. She spent more than a decade as a private consultant, working in Indigenous community engagement. But with the rise of e-commerce, the member of the Mohawk Nation has embraced an on-reserve opportunity – and way of life – that did not previously exist. “Having the business allows for us to be our own bosses, manage work hours and sick days as our children need them and to be uncompromising of our cultural life,” Ms. Brant says. A June report by the CCAB and the Office of the Chief Economist of Global Affairs Canada found that 24 per cent of Indigenous-owned small and medium-sized enterprises in Canada export – twice the national average among such businesses. “From a general consumer point of view, there is definitely an interest in buying sustainable and buying local and ensuring the work is authentic,” Ms. Bull says.

Tabatha Bull, chief operating officer at the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB), says that while few of the council’s members operate e-commerce businesses on reserve, she sees “huge potential” in such a model. She points to converging factors, including the fact Indigenous people are more likely to start their own businesses than non-Indigenous people; a fast-growing, young Indigenous population; commitments to expand broadband internet on First Nations communities; and efforts from companies such as e-commerce platform Shopify supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs. “There’s definitely going to be a huge surge of opportunity for new Indigenous

When Nature Calls…. Is Tiny House Living For You? “I believe everyone should own a home” Nick Gregson We’ve all heard that living in nature is good for our health but also for our wallet? As cities expand in density and air pollution rises, many are looking to alternative modes of living that may be more cost effective, closer to nature and less impactful on the environment. In cities, we not only battle pollution and traffic, we also battle the cost of living. As urban centres become too expensive, many relocate to smaller Provinces seeking out alternative ways of existing. Following the big financial crisis of 2008, the tiny house movement gained popularity for offering a simpler, more sustainable alternative to large urban living. With a tiny house you were suddenly mobile, debt free and closer to nature. Across Canada and the United States tiny house living is still an anomaly and not every Province or State allows it, but in British Columbia, tiny house communities exist, are legal and a viable option. Tiny House Builder Nick Gregson: “A thoughtful tiny home can reduce outside energy needs; with smart design, energy saving construction techniques and home generated power. It’s obvious to me that we have forgotten the basics of good energy management and I knew there must be a better way to design and build homes that capture the sun’s heat to work in harmony with nature. The housing crisis has opened a market for new ideas about housing. Nature has been providing earth with abundance for millennia. What’s more, water can store twice as much heat energy as concrete or rocks and circulating hot water with Pex piping in concrete floors has the best reputation for cost savings. 80 percent of homes built in North America are wood frame. An average 2x6 framed house uses approximately 40 full grown trees, the equivalent of 2 acres. These trees take a minimum of 40 years to grow back. The embedded cost of producing cement is a significant percentage of the worlds greenhouse gases. With such enormous waste of precious resources going into home building, minimally produced or salvaged materials score best. The power necessary to operate buildings and for the construction of building materials is the largest energy consuming sector in the U.S. Smart design can lower the energy use in a house by about 50 percent. The future looks bright for builders if home owners and architects work together to carve a path forward. Nick Continues, “The life cycle of materials is also a consideration as well as

One can back up their system with a gas generator and wind and even hydroelectric turbines, which are sized for household needs. “My suggestions is, don’t use more than you need and take responsibility for your energy needs”, Nick continues, “Harness the opportunities offered by the planet and enjoy the rewards. Being more aware of your energy needs is important, not just hitting a switch or knowing where it comes from, become aware of the processes of this huge global infrastructure.” Small, sustainable living is not only good for our planet but also for our health. Essential Oils and Kids… A Great Pair. Essential oils are great for everyone in the family, and kids are no exception. For young children, the use of a NOW® Solutions ultrasonic, cool mist diffuser provides a fun, convenient and safe means to disperse your favourite scents while the soothing coloured lights can make sleep-time easier. From kindergarten to college, essential oils are great to wake up with, as a study partner, to soothe during sickness, or for winding down from a busy day. Also, kids can come with their own ”smells”, so the use of a portable USB or wall plug-in diffuser, or creating a bottle mist scent can help fight the odours of a bedroom, vehicle, or sports gear. Natural essential oils are highly concentrated and should be used with care. There are some essential oils that are not recommended for use depending on age, so a quick visit to nowfoods. ca/kidseosafety can steer you in the right direction.

Whatever stage you are in, from diapers to diplomas, be sure to share natural essential oils with your children and develop some scentful habits that are good for their health and the world they live in.
