In my opinion, it always comes down to how well we take care of ourselves. We invest a sizeable amount of our time on work and family, yet often neglect to take care of our own needs. Our society values a strong work ethic above everything else and, while work usually takes up most of our adult lives, I feel that it is important to make sure you set some time apart to focus on yourself. This might mean something as simple as treating yourself to a favourite chocolate after a long week at work, or de-stressing over a cup of coffee while listening to your friend’s facetious remarks. It’s probably easier to take care of the stress that naturally accompanies everyday life if you just take a moment to simmer down and treat yourself.

Teachers get a boost

Bridget Moynahan recently partnered with OfficeMax for A Day Made Better, which gave 1,000 U.S. educators and teachers $1,000 each worth of school supplies. Moynahan says she was moved by stories of teachers who have taken extra jobs to be able to buy classroom basics. She has delivered gift boxes to many New York City area elementary schools.

Golden Hat helps kids

Kate Winslet, spokesmodel for Lancôme, founded the Golden Hat Foundation, a nonprofit to better the lives of children with autism. She also collaborated with the brand to create the Golden Hat holiday makeup collection, which includes makeup and nail colours. So far, about $200,000 has been donated to the foundation.

Auction for AIDSresearch Sarah Jessica Parker hosted the annual amfAR Annual New York Gala, a black-tie event that raises money to support AIDS research. Guests made donations by participating in a live auction, and paid tribute to the late Elizabeth Taylor, who was the organization’s Founding International Chairman. One guest donated $30,000 for two front-row tickets to Roberto Cavalli’s Italian Fashion Show and a sexy print of Richard Gere.

NAILING There’s more to gorgeous nails than just aesthetics—it’s also about your overall health by lena grady

I

t was a monthly tradition for 30-year-old Cathy. She and her friends would meet at a local nail salon and get manicures and pedicures while catching up on gossip. During a recent visit, Cathy’s nail technician pointed out the irregular, deep ridges on her nails, making her wonder if it was a sign of something happening below the surface. Nail issues can indicate anything from vitamin deficiencies to a number of underlying health conditions. We turned to Meghan Bauer, a naturopathic doctor at the ISIS Naturopathic Clinic in Toronto, for more information. “Ridges can be caused by a vitamin B deficiency that results in fragility and appears as horizontal and vertical ridges in the nails,” she explains. If your nails are brittle and break easily, it could be from a lack of vitamin A and calcium. Rippled nail surfaces are also sometimes an early sign of arthritis or psoriasis—many skin disorders can affect your nail growth.

beauty tips Hangnails, a nagging concern for many women, can be caused by a lack of protein, folic acid or vitamin C. If your nails are spooning, where they look scooped out, you could be iron deficient, which can make nails soft. And those all too common white spots on your nails? They can indicate a zinc deficiency. COLOUR CLUES

The colour of your nails is also important, says Toronto naturopathic doctor Chris Habib. Odd curved shapes, otherwise known as clubbing, can mean anything from congenital heart disease, lung disease or lung cancer, to infl ammatory bowel disease. For example, if the nail plate turns white, this can indicate liver disease (usually cirrhosis), congestive heart failure or diabetes. Nails can also get white spots, white bands or transverse lines, from more than just a lack of zinc. The white bands can indicate arsenic poisoning or carbon monoxide poisoning, explains Habib.

yeast. A few drops can be applied to the area three times a day. Black walnut is another strong antifungal herb that is useful when taken internally as a treatment for nail fungus. If you’ve checked in with a health care provider and ruled out anything serious, there are ways to combat common nail issues caused by vitamin deficiencies. Habib recommends fi rst trying biotin, an essential water-soluble B vitamin, that can treat brittle fi ngernails, particularly in women. You can also increase your levels of zinc, calcium, folic acid and omega-3s after you’ve discussed any dietary issues with your doctor or a nutritionist. BEAUTIFICATION

Once you’ve looked at the causes of your nail issues, it’s time to beautify your hands and feet. For keeping nails at their best, the pros suggest wearing gloves while using harsh cleaning products (or just using natural products that won’t harm your nails) or doing work outdoors.

Fungus is another main culprit of issues with fi ngernails and toenails. “A lack of friendly bacteria in the intestines leads to fungus under and around the nails,” explains Bauer. As your case is mild, you can keep it under control by avoiding certain triggers. Start by limiting spicy foods, alcohol, hot beverages, sun exposure, strong wind and cold weather. Eating a healthy diet and supplementing with fish oil can help keep inflammation down. I would also recommend supplementing with oregano oil, as it seems to eliminate the demodex skin mite that is associated with rosacea. Include plain yogurt or a probiotic in your diet to replenish the good bacteria in your intestines, as oregano oil can kill off some of the good bacteria as well.

What about natural hair removal? Do the natural products work as well as any other if I want to remove leg and underarm hair? – Carrie, London, Ont. Dear Carrie, I am assuming that you are referring to natural hair removal methods such as sugaring or waxing. Sugaring can be inexpensive, as you mix the ingredients yourself and only require sugar, water and lemon juice. The paste should only adhere to the hair and not the skin, so some say it is less painful than waxing. It is quite the art, because usually it is removed by hand, although you can purchase kits that include sugar and strips. You can also purchase wax that contains natural ingredients that can be heated in the microwave. My biggest concern is that the temperature should be correct to avoid burning your skin. The most important factor for efficacy is the technique of removing the hair. This takes practice to do without breaking the hair or irritating the skin. It can sometimes result in quite a mess. Waxing or sugaring done by a trained professional would be my first choice. When it’s done properly, it is quite effective and can save you time and aggravation.

Antioxidants are molecules that slow or prevent oxidation. They can slow down the aging process by reducing the number of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are natural byproducts of many cellular processes; however, excess free radicals can damage body cells and accelerate aging. Sleep is an essential function for repairing and restoring your mind and body. Ideally, people should sleep uninterrupted for seven to nine hours each night.

Exercise, to the point of sweating, is also a surefire way to guarantee a good night’s sleep. People doing shift work can take melatonin during the daytime. Increasing melatonin naturally requires total darkness, which is an essential component of proper sleep.

hen we think of “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder” (ADHD), we often associate it with children. However, about 60 per cent of people affected as children will experience the symptoms of ADHD into adulthood. Symptoms can include impaired concentration, distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

“The root causes are very similar, whether you’re a child or an adult,” she says. “If you’re talking about kids, you’re looking at whether their mom smoked or there was lead exposure [during gestation] or something like that. This is embarrassing. I seem to have a lot of gas and bloating no matter what I eat. Is there some kind of enzyme I need to take as a supplement? I’ve heard of this. Or could there be some other reason for this condition? – Marc, Ottawa, Ont. Dear Marc, Gas and bloating are some of the most common concerns that I see in my office. The cause is typically one of two things: inappropriate overgrowth of bacteria and/or fungus in the intestines, or sensitivity reactions to certain foods. What I do is request that people eliminate, for at least 30 days, specific foods that may be triggering the irritation of the gut or microflora. These foods are typically legumes (beans and nuts), dairy and gluten grains. I also ask people to eliminate the consumption of all raw fruits and salads during this time, to reduce the feeding of microflora. One to two tablespoons of coconut oil on food each day can address possible intestinal microbial overgrowth. Once symptoms subside, it is essential to figure out the triggers, by reintroducing different food groups and observing at what point the gas and bloating return. I would suggest an introduction interval of at least two days, to avoid any confusion.

ressed in black pants and a sleeveless top, a very athletic yet glamorouslooking Serena Williams walks into a Hollywood photo studio all smiles. Tucked under her arm she’s carrying a little canine companion, sister Venus’ dog Khan (named after singer Chaka Khan). The woman who captured the U.S. Open at age 17 and has gone on to break tennis records ever since—including two Olympic gold medals in women’s doubles—is known as much for dominating the courts as she is for her colourful tennis garb.

“I don’t wear a lot of black,” says the 5’9” powerhouse who has 27 Grand Slam titles to her name. “I can’t say ‘never’ to anything. I like really bright colours because I think they brighten up any mood and can make me feel sexy. They also empower me as a woman, especially sitting in a boardroom full of men.” Williams says her own fashion line this summer will reveal cheerful hues ranging from orange to yellow, green to bright purple “and my favourite, pink. Just feel-good colours and clothes — that’s my story.” Feminine side

Williams likes to surprise her fans by revealing her feminine side, something not often seen on the court. After all, it’s her agile, muscular body that she relies on to get her to the ball with lightning speed. “I think each of those characteristics helps balance me and everything else in my life,” she says. “A lot of people say to me ‘wow, you look different in person’ and I say ‘well, I’m not sweating and grunting.’ It’s a big difference when I’m working so hard in tennis—that’s my job. But being an athlete makes me never want to give up on things; whatever I believe in, I fight for and will do it again and again until it’s right.” At 30, an age when most female tennis players hang up their rackets, Williams is competing in this summer’s Wimbledon tournament, and believes her body can still stand the rigours of stiff competition and practice. “I think I can; I feel really young again,” she says. “Just the other day when warming up, I was thinking ‘I don’t feel too bad overall. This is really kind of cool.’” A bad year

A feeling of optimism could not come at a better time for Williams, who faced various health challenges last year. This left everyone wondering if the greatest female player

of her generation could reign supreme again. Williams’ health scares began shortly after she won Wimbledon in July 2010, with two right-foot operations due to ripped tendons after stepping on a shard of glass. Then, in February 2011, she experienced a lifethreatening episode, suddenly finding it difficult to breathe, and soon was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism (PE). “I didn’t know that shortness of breath was a main symptom of a PE,” reflects Williams. “I went to see my doctor, complaining of difficult breathing, and he found the embolism after doing a CAT scan of my lungs. I’m so thankful he did.” Adding to her medical problems, she soon developed a hematoma in her stomach, requiring another surgery. “I was giving myself blood thinner injections for my embolism and unfortunately, hit a blood vessel, which couldn’t clot,” she recalls. Having always been a vibrant, active and physical woman, Williams went into a funk during the ensuing recuperation period. “I couldn’t perform the functions I normally did, such as tennis, driving, exercising…even walking, so I became somewhat depressed,” she says. “For a person like myself who is used to going 200 mph every day, I found I had a problem becoming stagnant and slow.” Busy life

With all that in the past, Williams has the energy to stay busy with many interests. She has enrolled at the University of Massachusetts, majoring in business, nutrition and health; her clothing line and accessories are sell-outs at HSN.com; she has become a certified nail technician in preparation for her upcoming nail collection with Hair Tech; she’s filmed an appearance on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva as an ace family attorney, and is involved with several charities.

“I do a lot of work where I send girls to school in Africa and the United States who can’t afford it. I don’t talk about that a lot because I want to do it for the pure love of it,” Williams states. And let’s not forget her regular workouts that include elliptical training, running, Plyometrics, bike riding and serious stretching. “Stretching is really good for me as an athlete,” Williams says. “I don’t lift weights, but I keep very busy with exercise…and then I’m on the court too.” REDUCING STRESS

So with this flurry of off -court activity, Williams says she has become more emotional than ever due to lack of sleep, only getting about five to six hours of shut-eye a night. “Th at’s okay,” she quickly says. For some stress reduction, reading of fiction helps (“when I’m not reading textbooks”), watching reality TV, playing games on her iPod, laughing with sister Venus, and “prayer, which is important to me. Faith helped me get through some pretty tough times.” Nutritional staples that help sustain energy reserves and maintain focus include a protein shake for breakfast or a fresh green juice. “Cucumber juice with ginger—that really gives me energy,” Williams says. “I’m not a big morning eater, and I don’t drink coffee. Beans have become a really big staple for me because they’re both protein and carbohydrates. In fact, dinner last night was a black-eyed pea soup with a big salad. I haven’t eaten meat in over a decade, very little chicken or fish, and I’ve been omitting wheat from my diet and will only have it from time to time.”

PEANUT BUTTER

Yet Williams reveals it’s hard to pass up red licorice or chocolate-covered peanut butter cups. “They are so good that I’ll have fun with those things sometimes and go a little crazy…. but you know, it’s not really crazy. It’s just normal and is another thing that helps keep me balanced. I think being crazy is saying no to everything,” she says. As for relationships, Williams admits she is not in love at present, but hopes to be soon for the sheer “companionship it gives me and that youthful feeling. Plus, I’m really happy then, and that’s a good sensation.” READY TO WIN

Williams says she feels strong and competitive once again, and is looking forward to a winning year and beyond: “I would say this year is just beginning for me, and I’m only getting better. Hey, I’m still competing, and I wondered if I ever would again, during those medical struggles.” Yet with all her charismatic court displays, the woman whose name is synonymous with tennis champ, and temperamental diva, would rather be remembered for her personal reality checks. “I don’t really care what others think of me because life is too short to worry about what someone else says or thinks about you,” she says. “I’d rather people think of me as a real person—a really funny person who cares about education and helping those who want to further theirs…..Extremely caring, really funny….and young.”

itting on the patio of her new southern California home, Mary Murphy, co-host and judge for popular, Emmy-nominated So You Think You Can Dance, is smiling and laughing. This is nothing unusual for the effervescent and enthusiastic champion ballroom dancer until she tells you why she’s smiling now. “I’m so grateful that I’m cancer-free because I was so upset with myself that I didn’t go in earlier for surgery,” explains Murphy, who waited three years to have her cancerous tumour removed. “At first they said they couldn’t be sure it was cancer with just the needle biopsy I had, but that if it was, it was a slow-growing cancer. They probably shouldn’t have told someone like me that, because I get really busy. I was told to check it again in six months—when I called, my doctor said I hadn’t been in for two and half years. My heart just sank because at that point, I was already starting to show signs.”

ENERGY DROP

In fact, Murphy could feel the tumour, friends were telling her they could see it and her usual high spirits and energy were severely diminished. “I woke up after the surgery to find out I had thyroid cancer,” she says. The 5’8” dancer who travels worldwide as a guest host for international versions of her show, acknowledges that the cancer was a wake-up call. After the surgery, she embarked on her current balanced health odyssey that has her eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly. SO LONG, DAIRY

“My holistic practitioner says dairy has been linked to cancer, plus I have high cholesterol, so I’ve all but given up dairy, and only have red meat once a month,” Murphy says. “I also don’t eat soy due to its cancer link, so it’s fresh fruit and vegetables in my dressing room…and nuts.” She supplements with calcium, red yeast rice, Q-10, magnesium, selenium “and others that I line up in a little kit for the week. And I don’t take anything randomly, because my blood is tested regularly.” KEEPING FIT

Now that she’s simply trying to tone and keep fit, Murphy does resistance movement exercises and occasional yoga, and takes part in her own dance exercise program, “Core Rhythms.” “We offer it in my dance studio twice a day,” says Murphy, who still owns and runs her own dance school in San Diego, California. She sometimes will go and take her own classes there. “When I was dancing professionally, my life was balanced only when I would dance. Balanced living has changed for me because it’s not about your weight. It’s about how we’re treating the inside of our body as well. I used to be so skinny and could eat like a football player. Then I learned that you can look fantastic on the outside and be in the worst health on the inside. I want to be healthy inside and out.”

Jean Chatzky says consistency is key to health and finances by bonnie siegler

T

he author of seven bestselling books on financial topics and a regular on the Today show, Jean Chatzky is keenly aware of the current financial crisis affecting everyone. She is also aware of the effect that stress can have on overall health.

“The key to helping someone out of debt is consistency, and that’s the key with health as well,” says the Wisconsin native now living in New York with her family. “My schedule is actually a lot more flexible than people think. If I’m not on Today in the morning, I exercise as soon as I get my kids off to school. If I am on, either I skip that day or I jump on the treadmill after I get home.” The petite, 5’2” financial whiz says fitting exercise into her daily schedule can sometimes be challenging; however, she makes a concerted effort to run four to five miles at least three times a week. “And one day on the weekend, I try to get in at least one long run.” All this helps to balance out her favourite foods. “I make a mean spaghetti and clams, and a killer chocolate chip banana bread; I also enjoy following most of Ina Garten’s recipes,” she says. “Let me say that I strive for balance. There are a few things I won’t stock just because they’re ‘healthy.’ Still, I do try to make sure there are veggies at every meal.” Not the food police

Other nutritional staples include: 2 per cent yogurt, turkey breast, turkey meatballs, 1 per cent milk (“I hate skim”), granny smith apples, “and Hershey bars in the freezer. I’m definitely not the food police.” In fact, Chatzky says sometimes “balance” doesn’t fit into her lifestyle at all. “Well, sometimes balance doesn’t believe in me. Let’s say I successfully juggle. There are some days I’m good at work, others I’m better at home. If I can get most of it done, most of the time, I try to give myself a break.” Running is free

With many people nowadays working multiple jobs in order to support their family or their lifestyle, Chatzky says fitting fitness into an already strained budget shouldn’t cause anyone stress. “Follow my lead: run. Or if you don’t like to run, then walk. Just get outside and move. It’s inexpensive; you don’t need a gym membership. Plus, just getting out there doing something is great. “For me, exercising does give me some balance in life.” That and cooking or watching reruns of House and Friends. “Oh, and new episodes of Castle. WHITE SANGRIA Makes 5 ½ cups (1.3 L)

Âź cup (60 ml) Limoncello 2 peaches, pitted and cut in cubes 1 cup (150 g) raspberries 3 cups (750 ml) Prosecco sparkling wine 2 cups (480 ml) white cranberry juice 1 teaspoon (4 g) sugar (optional) 1. Pour the Limoncello, peaches and raspberries into a large pitcher. 2. Mix well and let stand 1 hour in the refrigerator so the flavours combine. 3. Add the cranberry juice and Prosecco to the fruit mixture. 4. Serve in wine glasses and add ice if desired.

Citrus Salad Serves 4 to 6 people

1 small fennel, thinly sliced 2 carrots, finely julienned 2 small Lebanese cucumbers, thinly sliced 4 oranges Zest of half a lemon 2 tablespoons (20 g) chopped capers 4 tablespoons (60 ml) olive oil Salt and pepper 1. Divide the oranges into segments, taking care to retain as much of the juice as possible. Set aside. 2. Place all sliced vegetables and the orange segments in a bowl. 3. In another small bowl, mix orange juice with capers, lemon zest and olive oil. Whisk all. 4. Add dressing to salad and mix well.

PERFECT GRILLED CHICKEN Serves 4 to 6 people

1 whole chicken weighing 3-4 pounds (1.5 -2 kilograms) Salt and freshly ground pepper ¾ cup (180 ml) olive oil 2 tablespoons (20 g) fresh rosemary, finely chopped 2 tablespoons (20 g) fresh thyme, finely chopped 1 tablespoon (10 g) hot pepper flakes Juice of 1 lemon 4 cloves garlic, minced Two bricks wrapped in aluminum foil Sea salt 1 lemon, cut in wedges 1. To butterfly the chicken, use a sharp pair of poultry shears or kitchen scissors to cut down both sides of the backbone. Remove and discard the backbone. Flip it around, and, using your palm, press down on the bird until it is flat. 2. Place chicken in a square baking dish. Season with salt and pepper. 3. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, rosemary, thyme, pepper, lemon juice and garlic. 4. Coat the chicken with the marinade and refrigerate, covered, for 8 to 12 hours. Remove chicken from refrigerator at least 30 minutes before cooking. 5. When cooking chicken, preheat barbecue grill to medium-high heat. Warm the bricks wrapped in aluminum foil for about 15 minutes. 6. When the bricks are hot, turn off one burner to cook chicken with indirect heat. Place chicken on the grill, breast side down, on the side where the burner is off. 7. Place the bricks on top of the chicken. Close lid and cook 20 to 25 minutes, or until the skin begins to brown slightly. 8. Flip the chicken over and place it on the side of the grill where the burner is lit. (The skin should be above; otherwise it will char). Put the bricks on the chicken again and cook, covered, 10 to 15 minutes. 9. Remove bricks and turn chicken one last time. Cook a few more minutes, until skin is crispy and the temperature of the thickest part of thigh reaches 165°F (75°C). 10. Remove chicken from heat and let stand for 10-15 minutes on a cutting board, covered with foil. 11. Cut the chicken in pieces and sprinkle with salt. Serve with lemon wedges.

BARBECUE GRILLED PEACHES Serves 4 to 6 people

3-4 ripe peaches, pitted and halved â…” cup (100 g) dry amaretti cookies, crushed 6 tablespoons (60 g) almonds, roughly chopped 4 teaspoons (15 g) sugar 1 tablespoon (5 g) cocoa powder 3 tablespoons (50 g) butter, melted Âź cup (60 ml) sweet white wine (preferably Moscato) Mint leaves, chopped Scoops of vanilla ice cream 1. Begin by increasing the size of the peach cavity left by the pit, by removing a tablespoon of flesh. Set aside the flesh. 2. Chop the peach flesh you removed and mix in a bowl with Amaretti cookies, almonds, 2 teaspoons of sugar and cocoa powder.

3. Add the wine and stir until the texture of the mixture is thick and uniform. 4. Brush peaches with butter on both sides and arrange on a plate, the cavities toward the top. 5. Fill each cavity with 1-2 tablespoons of stuffing. 6. Evenly sprinkle peaches with the remaining sugar. 7. Heat the grill of the barbecue to medium-low. 8. Arrange peaches on the grill skin-side down, and cook over low heat, about 10-15 minutes. (Check the barbecue frequently to avoid burning peaches.) 9. Carefully remove peaches from the grill, as they will be soft and very warm. 10. Garnish with fresh mint and add generous scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Directions: For the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together flours, baking powder, sea salt, cinnamon and allspice. Add in maple syrup, vanilla and almond extracts, almond or soymilk, lemon zest and 2 tablespoons oil. Whisk until smooth. Do not overmix. For the cream cheese: In a separate large bowl, combine cream cheese and strawberries. Add brown rice syrup, cinnamon, sea salt, vanilla extract and lemon juice, and whisk with a fork to combine. Place sliced strawberries in a bowl. Slice boule or loaf into large 2-inch- thick slices, and cut into each slice horizontally to form a pocket— but don’t cut all the way through bread. Preheat griddle or pan to medium-high heat. Grease with additional oil. Stuff each slice of bread with strawberry cream cheese and a few slices of strawberries. Coat each bread slice in batter, and then place on griddle or hot pan. Cook until bottom becomes slightly golden and edges look dry, about 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until golden. Let French toast cool for about 3-5 minutes before cutting. health issue: chronic fatigue Symptoms: I woke up one morning feeling tired and weak. I was under increased stress, and had been stricken with a bad flu. After getting over it, I decided to do a cleanse, hoping it would help. The cleanse was too strong for me, and I got quite sick and had to discontinue it. My MD told me the fatigue was due to stress. I tried to live with it; however, my symptoms continued to worsen. After two years and another stressful period, I began to get panic attacks, I was cold all the time and I felt like my body was shutting down. I had a number of visits with specialists; all my test results came back normal. Health recommendations: I went to an acupuncturist, who recommended an acupuncture protocol along with diet modification, B12 injections, and a shift in exercise intensity towards lighter activity. The results: I’ve had a 50 per cent improvement in energy levels and overall wellbeing. I feel my best when I stick to a vegan, low-fat, raw food diet. I continue to work on improving my energy to 100 per cent, understanding that sometimes it takes time. Name: C aitlyn Age: 27 Occupation: Full-time administrative assistant and part-time student

health issue: Infertility Symptoms: Soon after getting married, my husband and I were eager to start a family. We tried for a year or so, and it then became apparent that we were going to need some extra help. I dealt with infertility for five years; trying IUI’s, IVF, surgery and acupuncture. We even went through the unsuccessful process of surrogacy with a family member. The odds were stacked against us, given my uterine deformities and family history of fertility issues, yet I wasn’t giving up. Health recommendations: I went through many treatments, from laser treatments for endometriosis to hormone therapy to help thicken my uterine lining. After five years of trying, I was tired, though still determined. I went to see a naturopathic doctor, and she recommended that I try an anti-inflammatory diet. The diet consisted of going gluten, dairy, red meat, sugar and alcohol-free. It sounded like a lot to eliminate; however, after the long road we had already travelled, it seemed worth it! The results: With all the different treatments I was on, my uterine lining was being monitored regularly. Shortly after starting the diet, the doctor noticed that the lining was starting to thicken. health issues: candida, tendonitis and bottled-up rape trauma Symptoms: I had candida, a stomach issue that felt like an ulcer, and tendonitis in my right, dominant, arm. This was all coupled with a decades-old bottled-up rape trauma that I had yet to release. Health recommendations: I began yoga, meditation and massage for stress management. I also sought out the advice of a naturopathic doctor skilled in acupuncture. She was able to treat my elbow, along with a few other body aches. She also provided nutritional advice, and supplementation for managing the candida. Plus, she provided me with some much needed counselling for the rape. I had bottled this up for years, and it felt like such a relief to let it out. The results: This all resulted in much healing; my arm mended over time, the candida subsided and the ulceric feeling vanished. My energy levels increased, along with my flexibility and core stability through yoga. My diet slowly evolved away from drinking wine on a nightly basis, coupled with the eradication of deli meats, to eventually giving up meat altogether. I am on the path to self-actualization, constantly exploring new avenues of self and how I am affected by my surroundings. And I have forgiven and let go of the rape trauma I experienced at age 21. • Create a catchy headline that focuses on who you’re trying to attract, versus information about yourself. “If you like Saturday golf and Sunday brunch over the New York Times, you’re my guy” is an invitation. “I like golf, brunches and reading the Times” is information signalling a mere possibility. The header can also be used as a fi lter. For example: “Looking for a fit 30-40-year-old male within 20 miles of Vancouver” may entice those who match your criteria, while encouraging others to move on.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU NEGOTIATE THE ONLINE DATING WORLD:

PICK A SITE: It’s always a great idea to work with two sites: one major, well-known site, and a boutique site that caters to a niche: ethnic background, religion, hobbies, or anything else that’s truly important to you. If you can pick sites that allow you to browse profi les for free, all the better, since you’ll be able to assess whether these people are a good fit for you. BUILD A PROFILE: • Be very honest about what you want and what you have to offer, ensuring that both sections are of a similar length.

MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION: Most sites will include your response rate. Someone who responds only 25 per cent of the time can appear stuck-up. Someone who responds 75 per cent of the time will appear serious, and someone who responds 100 per cent of the time could come across as non-selective and desperate. Beyond that, some sites allow people to rate you once you’ve been on a date. Those who use old pictures, lie about their age/weight/looks etc. and don’t match up to their profi le will get a poor rating. READ BETWEEN THE LINES: According to communication expert Dr. Albert Mehrabian, words only account for seven per cent of impression formation. The rest comes from body language, facial expression and tone of voice. However, when you’re dealing with written profi les and communication, words count for 100 per cent, as we endeavour to make ourselves look desirable. When viewing others’ profi les, try to hold off on judgment until you have more to go on; and always listen to your gut instinct—online or in person—since it’s more reliable than your internal conversations. PREVENT CONFUSION: When people have too many choices, they end up in an assessment mind-set, where decisions are made by comparing choices. The alternative is a locomotion mind-set, where decisions are based on whether something or someone is likely to help you reach your goals.

Studies show that the locomotion mind-set allows you to be satisfied with a choice that meets your needs. The assessment mind-set creates serious doubts, because comparison leads to a mind-set that’s more focused on what you’ll be passing up, versus getting excited about what you’ll be gaining. Due to the high number of choices on the Internet, people are in the assessment mind-set, so buyer beware! CHOOSE WISELY: Don’t confuse love with sex. It’s called “chemistry” because the chemicals in your brain are programmed to sway you into mating, by creating a high that falsely leads you to believe your lover is an ideal fit. Th is is why I tell people to run if they feel intense chemistry, since their decisions are probably made in an altered state. When it comes to love, however, you’re likelier to focus on factors that spell longevity, such as similar core values—which are most crucial in forging a healthy relationship. Now that you have a road map to negotiate your journey, all that’s left is for me to say is bon voyage!

I hadn’t set foot in a nightclub in quite some time, so when I entered

After an hour, I switched to Bar Vdara—much more my preferred setting of sophistication mixed with whimsy, right in the heart of the hotel. Though it was still a balmy 80 degrees outside, the outdoor swings overlooking the reflecting pool became the perfect place to taste one of the bar’s summer seasonal cocktails. I chose the apple and pear drink made with delicious pear puree, apple cider, house sweet and sour, Cruzan single barrel rum and cinnamon sugar rim. My friend chose the Agave Kiss: Herradura tequila, Chambord, double cream, raspberries and a dark chocolate rim. For a dining experience not to be missed, head over to MGM Grand and enjoy L’Atelier de Joel Rubuchon, Zagat’s rated “Best Las Vegas Restaurant.” So, while “Sin City” might be baking in the desert summer heat, it’s still a hub of excitement, with many options to play it cool.
