SLEEP SUPPORT

Restful Sleep the Natural Way When you experience sleeplessness, melatonin safely and effectively reduces the time it takes to fall asleep, increases the quality and duration of sleep, relieves daytime fatigue, and resets the body’s sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland inside the brain each day when darkness falls. It is part of the “internal clock” that prepares the body for sleep. But this clock can get out of phase due to shift work, jetlag, stress, depression, or when melatonin production declines with age. Research shows that taking a melatonin supplement an hour before bed can reset the internal clock, allowing you to return to a restful pattern of regular sleep. Unlike pharmaceutical sleeping pills, which can disrupt the critical REM stage of sleep, melatonin works with the body’s natural hormones to support REM sleep. Melatonin Timed Release from webber naturals ® provides just the right amount of melatonin throughout the night to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, and awaken more refreshed, with no next-day grogginess.

Magazine

Founder/Editor-in-Chief Olivier Felicio

I am not a glutenista School is almost out and the warm weather is here. It’s an opportunity to make a few tweaks in the kitchen. Local farmers supply Loblaws, Superstore and Fortinos with fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the harvesting season. It’s an excellent opportunity to mix it up around the BBQ and dining room table with fresh new ingredients. With the kids at home, now is a great time to try new snacks and introduce new food items. As we searched for inspiration for this issue of Viva magazine, we took a walk through Loblaws and truly felt inspired. They have everything to create memorable summer meals. In this issue, we have a compelling feature on celiac disease and the increasing prevalence of gluten intolerance. If you enjoy citrus, we have an article that explains how it helps protect your blood vessels. Moreover, we have a sneak peek at Cityline host Tracy Moore’s healthy food habits (look closely inside her fridge – do you recognize anything?). Our feature article and gluten-free shopping guide will be useful whether you are gluten intolerant or simply a glutenista! Everywhere we turn, it seems more and more people are following a gluten-free diet. What does this diet mean and why has it become so popular? Is gluten free a fad or here to stay? Take a look at what our editorial team has put together for you and your family. Don’t miss our staff’s favourite summer recipes and cocktails. Finally, our cover story features Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher. She offers tips on aging gracefully in Hollywood and her reliance on natural health products such as chia seeds to remain healthy. She’s pushing 50, however she’s still “real and spectacular!” Keep the passion for balanced living. Active Liver ™ Cleanse and flush the fat The liver has a vital function for the body, other than cleansing it! The liver is an important fat burning organ. It metabolizes and flushes fats from our system. But if the liver is burdened by an unhealthy lifestyle, it becomes less effective and starts storing fat, especially around the belly and on the inner organs. Active Liver tablets contain effective plant extracts to promote your liver's health and function.

#1 CHILI FAT BURNER *

Chili Burn™ Your natural fat burner Green tea and chili peppers have the ability to enhance your metabolism and help increase fat burning without the unhealthy side effects. Chili Burn contains both these ingredients as well as chromium, which helps the body release fat.

Nature contains some of the best remedies for safely relaxing the body and mind. Melissa Dream uses ingredients such as l-theanine from green tea leaves, as well as lemon balm and chamomile. The ingredients have been proven effective in promoting a deep relaxation, which can help you reduce stress but also help you sleep through the night, and wake up refreshed.

Apple Cider ™ Helps with water retention Apple cider has been used for centuries as a miracle ingredient, especially for weight and digestion. HOW DO YOU DEFINE BALANCED LIVING?

Marielle Torrefranca Position at Viva: Editorial Intern On balanced living: Balanced living is all about plugging into each section of your life in comfortable and healthy ways. I find it’s a lot like a chemical formula, which is funny, since I failed chemistry. Living a well-balanced lifestyle is all about finding the fine line between being a dedicated workaholic, an all-around food enthusiast, an exercise nut and a professional Netflix surfer - too much of one thing in the formula can throw my lifestyle overboard, usually for the worse. When you are always on the go, it may be hard to start something new to achieve a balanced lifestyle, but the little things count. I find that a simple hour of yoga, or even kickboxing, every week can be totally empowering and can make dramatic changes in my attitude and health. Also, knowing when to switch off the email alerts for a few hours to spend time with the people I love is essential to my happiness and emotional health. In the end, balanced living means knowing my priorities, what’s important to me, and how to reach out to all of those areas.

The sunshine vitamin

It’s time to be active. Put on the right amount of sunscreen and go for a nice walk, run, swim or bike ride. Your body needs vitamin D and it is produced by your skin in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from natural sunlight. People with dark skin pigmentation may need 20 to 30 times as much exposure to sunlight as fair-skinned people to generate the same amount of vitamin D.

Gluten-Free: Bloated Diet Fad or Emerging Science? by Philip Rouchotas MSc, ND,

What do actress Scarlett Johansson, pop singer Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell, TV host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, NFL quarterback Drew Brees and tennis superstar Novak Djokovic have in common? They all eat a gluten-free diet. Some of them suffer from celiac disease; others are gluten intolerant, allergic to wheat or simply do it for the health benefits they hope to get from eliminating gluten from their diet. The debate over the merits of a gluten-free diet isn’t limited to celebrities and socalled glutenistas. In Wheat Belly, Dr. William Davis makes a compelling case for eliminating gluten, a ubiquitous ingredient found in most bread, pasta, pizza, cookies, cakes and beer. Davis draws on decades of

38 / vivamagonline.com

VIVA_celeb-gluten_EB2.indd 38

clinical studies and the extraordinary results he has observed after putting thousands of his patients on wheat-free regimens. His best-seller is a provocative look at how eliminating wheat - even so-called healthy whole grain wheat - from our diets is the key to permanent weight loss and can offer relief from a broad spectrum of health and digestive problems, including:

• Weight loss of 20, 30 even 50 pounds in the first few months • Alleviation of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes • Recovery from intestinal woes, like ulcerative colitis and celiac disease • Marked improvement in overall cholesterol and LDL counts

• Improvement in bone density and reversal of osteoporosis • Cessation of skin conditions from psoriasis to oral ulcers and hair loss • Reduction of inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis pain If you’re seeing a naturopathic doctor, you have probably heard about gluten. Many of us may know a friend or a family member who has adopted a gluten-free diet. However, what are we to make of this new phenomenon? Are there truly health risks associated with wheat or gluten intake? If so, what are they? First of all, let’s define gluten. Gluten is a protein that is present in grains, most notably wheat, as well as other related grains such as barley, rye, spelt, kamut, couscous and oatmeal. In baking, gluten inside the flour functions as the “glue” that holds the bread, muffin, etc. together (Tosi 2011). Within the medical community, gluten is best known for its relation to celiac disease. Celiac disease is a well-known disease of the small intestine that is caused by exposure to gluten. It occurs in about one per cent of people, although it occurs more frequently among people with other autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes (Gujral 2012). In affected individuals, exposure to even minute amounts of gluten triggers the body’s own immune system to attack the tissues of the intestine, causing atrophy, nutrient deficiency and often severe digestive symptoms. Celiac disease is diagnosed either through blood testing looking for the presence of a specific antibody or through an intestinal biopsy that is taken during a “scope” exam. Celiac disease can have many complications; however, the bottom line is that it can be controlled only through strict adherence to a gluten-free diet. It used to be considered that only individuals with celiac disease were affected by gluten consumption. However, there is now a growing field of research investigating a condition called nonceliac gluten enteropathy or sensitivity (NCGS). Simply put, this term means gluten-associated disease of the intestines that does not meet the classic criteria for celiac; it is nonetheless quite real and the intestinal damage is visible upon endoscopic (“scope”) examination. This discovery is groundbreaking within medical science. Although it usually takes many years for new research to result in changes in healthcare, the emergence of this field of study is important because it confirms the subjective experiences of increasing numbers of people: dramatic improvement and even resolution of seemingly unrelated chronic illnesses upon elimination of gluten. At present, there is no diagnostic test for NCGS, and so it is currently defined as “a condition associated with … symptoms in response to ingestion of foods containing wheat, rye, and barley, and the resolution of symptoms on removal of those foods from diet in individuals in whom CD [celiac disease] and wheat allergy

/ health Feature

have been ruled out” (Lundin 2012). The range of symptoms reported is quite broad, and includes digestive symptoms and abdominal pain, nausea, headache, tingling or numbness in hands and feet, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, skin rashes, eczema, as well as more rare but severe neuropsychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia or ataxia (Lundin 2012). The reason for the apparent sudden increase in the incidence of NCGS, given that wheat has been a dietary staple historically, is unknown. It has been suggested that selective breeding practices of modern wheat has resulted in greater gluten content, and therefore greater exposure (Kasarda 2013). Others have suggested that the increased frequency of gluten in our diet, outright or covert within other foods as “filler,” has led to increased cumulative exposure to this immune-sensitizing molecule. It should also be noted that there has been an increase in allergies and immune sensitization (eczema, asthma, and allergy) in general over recent decades, attesting to underlying immune disruptions, which are likely due to a host of lifestyle and environmental factors. These may increase our predisposition to having an immune response to gluten as well. While there is no definitive answer at this time, it seems likely that a combination of these factors may be at work. It is important to note that despite the increasing prevalence of gluten sensitivity, not everyone is affected. Those who observe first hand the benefits of gluten elimination often make the argument that gluten is likely “bad” for everyone, and that everyone should eliminate gluten from their diet. It is important to recognize that gluten sensitivity does not affect everyone, and that there are benefits to maintaining tolerance to one’s environment. Tolerance simply means that the immune system does not react to something as foreign; it does not mount an immune attack on it. In those without sensitivity, retaining a moderate level of gluten exposure is important for the ongoing maintenance of immune tolerance.

Naturopathic doctors frequently counsel patients on how to follow a gluten-free diet. Given the list of grains provided, it is important to point out that “wheat-free” does not mean “gluten-free.” Gluten can be hidden under many aliases, including the names of other grains, as well as terms that are not easily recognizable as such, such as malt. Our patients with long-standing celiac disease routinely inform us how difficult it was to adhere to a gluten- free diet 20 years ago; today there are many options available for gluten free bread, snacks, crackers, cookies etc. It is also important while adhering to a gluten-free diet to remember the other basic principles of healthy eating, such as limiting refined sugar and saturated and trans fats, using whole grains when possible (gluten-free), including lentils and legumes in the diet, lean protein, and consuming at least five servings each of fruits and vegetables per day.

• Carroccio A, Mansueto P, Iacono G, Soresi M, D’Alcamo A, Cavataio F,

Therefore, while a gluten-free diet can be extremely beneficial for those affected by sensitivity, and is increasingly confirmed by emerging science, it is crucial to go about implementing one in a careful and balanced manner. We recommend having a proper assessment with a naturopathic doctor or other licensed healthcare provider in order to determine whether you may in fact be affected by non-celiac gluten sensitivity. A naturopathic doctor can help you learn how to build a healthy, balanced, and gluten- free diet. VM

RBREAD, BAGELS & MUFFINS: The Canadian Food Guide recommends that 50 per cent of the grains we eat should be whole grains. What does this mean for someone who is gluten intolerant? According to the Canadian Celiac Association, most of our gluten-free products are made from cornstarch, potato starch, tapioca starch and white rice flours, which are not whole grain flours. Whole grains have more nutrients and should be included in your diet whether you’re gluten intolerant or not. Here’s a list of nutritious, flavourful, whole grain, glutenfree products available at your local grocery stores.

RKID-FRIENDLY SNACKS:

As gluten sensitivity becomes more prevalent, hosting a birthday party or a play-date can turn into a tricky task for most parents. According to Health Canada, about seven per cent of Canadians self-report some type of food allergy. In this context, it’s easy for the majority of the population to forget that exposure to certain ingredients can have deadly consequences for some. Gluten, peanuts, seafood, strawberries, eggs and dairy products are among the most common food allergies. One of the challenges of the gluten-free diet is making sure your kids always have appropriate snack in their lunchbox. A few decades ago, rice cakes were among the few glutenfree snacks available on the market. Today, parents have many great options to choose from.

Is Your Fish Oil Ocean Wise Recommended? Overfishing is placing an incredible strain on the world’s resources and the health of our oceans. It’s one of our main global sustainability issues. Ocean Wise™ is the Vancouver Aquarium’s national seafood program that helps you choose ocean-friendly seafood, including fish oil. Choosing Ocean-Friendly Fish Oil When selecting a fish oil, it always helps to ask: “Where does this fish oil come from?” Is it from forage fish—such as anchovies and sardines? Many fish oils on the market are sourced from a group called “forage fish.” These are small species that make up an essential part of the marine food web. Unfortunately, it’s a common commercial practice to overharvest forage fish. They’re caught in huge quantities for industrial uses, including the manufacturing of fertilizer, paint, linoleum… and fish oil products. When this vital link in the food chain is compromised, the survival of many other, larger species is also affected. Is it from farmed fish—such as farmed salmon? Fish oils may be sourced from farmed fish, including farmed salmon. Some aquaculture operations can negatively affect wild habitats depending on how and

where the fish are being raised. Intensive open-ocean salmon farms, for example, can lead to water pollution, disease outbreaks, and destruction of coastal habitats from heavy concentrations of fish waste and feed. In addition, farmed fish are often fed forage fish—adding to ocean species depletion. Is it from krill—not a fish? An emerging source for oil supplements is krill, which is a small crustacean that is regular food for blue whales, seals, penguins, and other large marine animals. Krill is being fished commercially for supplements and as feed for farmed fish, and krill harvests are increasing every year. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet how increasing krill harvests may affect the long-term health of the oceans. Like forage fish, krill are vital food for many species. It could turn out that depleting krill would affect the larger animals that depend on them. Because of such concerns, krill fishing has been banned from parts of the Pacific Coast to protect the ecosystems there.

Is it from well-managed Wild Alaskan Salmon fisheries? There’s a choice for fish oil that stands out as ocean-friendly and sound: sustainably wild-caught salmon from the deep, pristine waters of Alaska. Wild Alaskan Salmon fisheries are managed by science-based protocols to ensure sustainability and maintain fish populations. In fact, the Wild Alaskan Salmon fisheries that provide the fish oil used in Wholemega are cited as worldwide models of sustainability.

The Benefits of Whole Omegas

Wholemega® is the only fish oil recommended by Ocean Wise.

Three Servings of Salmon

Wholemega Whole Fish Oil from New Chapter® is derived from 100% sustainably caught Wild Alaskan Salmon. In fact, Wholemega is sourced from the valuable unused trimmings of Wild Salmon already caught for food consumption. Not one fish is caught exclusively for Wholemega. Instead, fillets from the salmon go to restaurants and fine retailers, and the nutrient-rich trim that would otherwise be discarded is pressed to deliver an extra-virgin oil brimming with fresh salmon’s broad-spectrum Omegas. Helping to avoid waste is at the heart of sustainability…. so Wholemega is a choice you can feel good about!

Wholemega delivers Nature’s profile of 17 Omegas from Wild Salmon, including Omega 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9’s. Some of these Omegas are referred to as ‘good fats,’ and are present and play an important role in many human cells. Specifically, Omega fatty acids support cognitive health and brain function. They also support the development of the brain, eyes, and nerves in children and adolescents.

To get enough beneficial Omegas from fish, many health experts recommend eating 2–3 servings of fish per week. Wholemega can help! Taking the daily dose of Wholemega* for a week provides the same amount of whole Omega fatty acids as three 100-gram servings of Wild Salmon.

New Chapter is proud that Wholemega is the first and only fish oil recommended by Ocean Wise. Look for the Ocean Wise symbol on seafood items, including Wholemega, for the Vancouver Aquarium’s assurance of an ocean-friendly choice. Learn more at oceanwise.ca.

Extra Virgin and Wildly Pure™ When it comes to selecting a fish oil, there’s a clear difference between naturally pure Wholemega Whole Fish Oil from New Chapter and processed, purified fish oils. Because Wholemega is made with 100% Wild Salmon, from among the cleanest and purest fish stocks in the world, our extra-virgin process (think fine olive oil) is all that’s needed to deliver Wild Salmon’s broad-spectrum Omegas and beneficial nutrients, such as Vitamin D3 and Astaxanthin. By contrast, fish oil manufacturers that source their oils from many types of fish shipped long distances for processing often employ a multi-step purification process to deliver their product. With Wholemega, heavy chemical processing to deliver purity is simply not required. It’s a difference you can see—Wholemega’s gentle, food-grade process delivers an oil striking in color and transparency.

Make a difference with Wholemega— for a healthy you, a healthy ocean. *2-gram daily dose of Wholemega

Citrus

by Robert Dadd, Master Herbalist Diosmin and hesperidin may sound like characters from a

Greek play, but they are actually bioflavonoids found naturally in citrus fruits. Starting in the late 1980s, they’ve been studied in numerous clinical trials for their benefits in strengthening and protecting weak blood vessels. Weak, leaky blood vessels often spell pain, discomfort, swelling, and inflammation in the form of varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Varicose veins affect approximately 25% of women and 10% of men in Western countries, while hemorrhoids show up in about 4.4% of the general population at some point in life. Starting in the warm, sunny climates of Spain and the south of France, diosmin and hesperidin are extracted from citrus fruits, micronized into a smaller, more absorbable size, and then encapsulated with 450 mg of diosmin and 50mg of hesperidin per capsule. These proportions are the standard amounts per capsule as they were discovered to be the optimal ratio in the clinical studies. Dr. Oz also recommends this exact formulation. Most of the studies done on diosmin and hesperidin lasted between 1 and 12 months, but the use of these ingredients to protect the vascular system dates all the way back to 1971 in France.

52 / vivamagonline.com

VIVA_citrus.indd 78

With varicose veins and hemorrhoids, the blood vessels in the area have become weak and leaky and this results in reduced blood supply being returned to the heart, along with pain, swelling, inflammation and ulceration in the area. Diosmin and hesperidin act as citrus superstars to repair, strengthen and tone the blood vessels. They also provide antioxidant support against further free radical damage, and reduce inflammation. The swelling, pain, heaviness, leakage, and poor blood flow is gradually reduced over the course of a couple of months. In addition, these bioflavonoids are safe for long term use. Plus, they are sustainable and vegan so you can use them with confidence, knowing they will effectively repair your veins. The other options for getting rid of varicose veins include compression stockings, surgery, injections (sclerotherapy), and laser vein stripping techniques so it’s definitely nice to have something as safe, effective and non-invasive as diosmin and hesperidin for dealing with this often unsightly problem. Just dig in to Puffins cereal

Now’s a great time to eat more Puffins cereal. Not only will you enjoy the crunchiness and delicious flavours of this nutritious breakfast or snack, you’ll also be helping out a great cause: supporting a colony of Atlantic Puffins at Eastern Egg Rock on the coast of Maine, U.S. To celebrate Project Puffin’s 40th anniversary, for every box of Puffins cereal you buy at Loblaws from July 19th to August 15th, 40 cents will go towards Project Puffin, a seabird restoration project that was set up in 1973 to revitalize a Maine puffin colony that had disappeared for nearly 100 years.

• Adopt a puffin for $100

Another fantastic way to make sure there are always puffins in Maine is to donate $100 to Project Puffin. Your donation will make a difference for these beautiful seabirds and their coastal habitat. For details visit: www.projectpuffin.org You’ll also receive an Adopt a Puffin kit, which includes information about your puffin: its behaviour, nesting, activities and a colour photo of your new feathered friend, along with an adoption certificate with your name on it. If you’ve named your puffin, you can have its name put on the certificate.

Here’s how your donation •helps make a difference

Your donation helps create a summer position as ‘puffin keeper’. The designated candidate gets to live on the islands with the birds to reduce disturbance from boaters and human activity.money so the colony can continue to thrive. For details visit: projectpuffin.org

Dr. Stephen Kress

Every summer, 20 interns from Canada, the U.S. and other countries set up camp at several Maine puffin colonies to deter gulls, eagles and owls, and other predators from preying on the puffins. Plus, they work to remove garbage and invasive weeds to make the habitat more welcoming to the nesting puffins. As part of their biology studies, the interns observe how the puffins pair up, who they mate with, and even who “divorces” their mate! The birds are wary of humans but also somewhat accepting when the humans stay in their “blinds” – cloth structures with small holes through which the students can watch the birds. During the summer, Web cams are set up so that anyone can go to www.projectpuffin.org and watch puffins - exactly like you’re right there with them! Last summer, five new streaming-video cameras were installed to watch puffins and other seabirds, increasing your entertainment possibilities. Another way your donation can help is by supporting Project Puffin’s strong community outreach component. The area has become a magnet for eco-tourists from all over North America. There is a visitor centre located in Rockland, Maine; a school outreach program, a boat for puffin tours, and a resident camp for adults, teens and families on nearby Hog Island. Donations help students protect puffins Your donations go into a fund that supports student internships. About 20 biology students in Seabird Conservation Biology from Canada, the U.S and other countries such as Belize, Mexico and Haiti work at seven field stations in Maine that operate in the summer, studying 42,000 nesting seabirds. The funding enables

56 / vivamagonline.com

VIVA_puffin.indd 56

the interns to spend their time studying the habitats of the islands and the many birds that nest there, as part of their biology course. Research that’s done on the Atlantic Puffins can also be used to study other species of puffins, such as the two species of puffin that live on the west coast of North America: the Horned Puffin and the Tufted Puffin. Your donations go a long way. Dr. Kress points out that the techniques that have been used for Project Puffin are very useful for other, similar seabird projects around the world. Two of the interns who took the program at Eastern Egg Rock are now directing a project off the Baja coast of Mexico. The Baja project involves removing all mammals from some small islands, and restoring indigenous bird populations by using decoys and sound recordings. Other applications of Project Puffin include relocating birds off volcanoes about to erupt, and discouraging fish-eating seabirds from habitat where they are eating too many salmon in a commercial fishery area, Dr. Kress says. Canadian puffins help repopulate U.S. colony Project Puffin was launched in 1973 by Dr. Stephen Kress, in association with the National Audubon Society. Here’s how it all happened: “In 1967 while I was in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, while teaching at Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre, I was invited to visit nearby Machias Seal Island. Here, I decided to do a little bird watching from a lighthouse late at night,” Dr. Kress recalls. “I observed a large puffin colony. I became

program and vice president for Bird Conservation of the National Audubon Society in the U.S. This is a large, significant organization involved in studying, researching and conserving birds and their habitats. His home base is the Cornell University lab of Ornithology, where he teaches a popular course in ornithology, the study of birds. From Ohio State University, he has bachelor degrees in zoology, a Master’s degree in biology and a PhD in environmental science from Cornell.

Dr. Kress began to study and research the situation, and came up with a brilliant idea: to bring some puffins from a thriving colony of 160,000 nesting pairs in Newfoundland to Eastern Egg Rock in Maine. So, young puffins of 10-14 days old were transported south to their new home. The experiment proved successful, and the young puffins, fed by biologists who tucked vitamins inside the mouth of the fish fed to the chicks, reached “fledging” age - which is when young birds leave the nest. Altogether, between 1973 and 1986, 954 young puffins were moved from Newfoundland to Eastern Egg where excessive hunting for food and feathers eliminated a thriving colony by 1885. A total of 914 of those successfully fledged. What made the biologists happy is that in 1977, the first transplanted puffins returned to Maine after spending two years at sea. The real proof of success eluded Dr. Kress for eight years as the first puffin to nest at Egg Rock was not sighted until 1981. Since then, the colony has grown to more than 120 pairs. “This had never been done before,” says Dr. Kress. “With time, most of the puffins that survived came back to Maine. They re-colonized well, and to this day, two of the oldest original Newfoundland chicks are still alive and thriving well on the coast of Maine. They were 35 years old in 2012.”

“I hope this project will give Canadians a greater awareness of seabirds,” Dr. Kress says. “It’s an opportunity for interns and donors to learn about seabird conservation and the health of the ocean. With climate change in the news, people don’t know what to do to make a difference, so Project Puffin helps them become a part of the story. It’s a great way to get involved with seabird conservation. These seabirds live in remote places, but they’re affected by the actions of people.” Barbara’s Bakery A pioneer in the natural foods movement, Barbara’s was founded in 1971 by a 17-year-old girl who was passionate about creating great-tasting food from simple, wholesome ingredients. Located in Marlborough, Mass., Barbara’s is committed to making a positive contribution to the world with donations to national and local non-profit organizations including the National Audubon Society’s Project Puffin program, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Teri Hatcher: VIVA

by Bonnie Siegler

Keeps it real... and spectacular! Well before her iconic role as quirky Susan Mayer in Desperate Housewives, Teri Hatcher uttered a memorable line during a guest appearance on Seinfeld in 1993. In one quip, she captured the imagination of millions and dispelled any lingering doubt about having breast implants. She told Jerry and Elaine: “They’re real…and they’re spectacular.” Being real has been a way of life throughout Hatcher’s career. “There is not an ironclad moment or an epiphany where I say, okay, I’ve figured life out,” says Hatcher. Taking a break from wardrobe changes during Viva’s photo shoot, her well-toned legs crossed and a black sweater revealing what made her a consistent contender amongst the “Sexiest Women” list, Hatcher is having fun talking about turning 48, her girlfriends, and donning a chef ’s hat. The Palo Alto, California native has made a name for herself in Hollywood via her varied roles: smart and savvy Lois Lane on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, quirky Susan Mayer on Desperate Housewives, and sexy Bond girl in Tomorrow Never Dies. The self-described “funny, kind, honest, adventurous, smart” woman also admits she’s had her share of ups and downs. “But I joke with myself where I put life on a daily parallel of a tennis match: Hatcher - 0, Life - 1. Then I laugh

about it and say, okay, the day won today and tomorrow will be a better one. So it’s not tragic. I will never say I can’t wait till this day is over, no matter how bad it might be.” The former San Francisco 49ers cheerleader is as famous for her looks as she is for her roles. Now taking a break from Hollywood, the single mom to teen daughter Emerson still knows how to keep things in perspective – inside and outside the house. Hatcher and her daughter love to watch What Not To Wear together. “You almost want to cry when you see these women go through emotional pain only to blossom at the end of the show.” Hatcher is also ensconced at a local Cordon Bleu culinary school where she puts on her white chef ’s outfit, sans makeup or without anything that would reveal her status in Hollywood, but she admits, there were some very dark days in her life, dating back to her childhood when an uncle sexually abused her. More recently, she sustained a few broken ribs from a fall on the set of Desperate Housewives and a painful diagnosis of frozen shoulder. Isn’t that the most ridiculous name for a disease? For a few months, I noticed I couldn’t put my arm behind me to put on a jacket and thought I lifted something wrong,” recalls Hatcher on the beginning of her immune disease. “Then one

“We get to 45 and there’s a bit of enticement to feel like you’re done. No you’re not! You’re starting anew so you have to keep your mind and body physically prepared.” – biking, hiking and always looking ahead, Hatcher spends some of her down time listening to Pema Chodron’s meditative tapes, reading and learning about nutrition. She prefers magazines over books to help relax, “because they’re not a big commitment so reading in the bathtub helps ease tension,” she explains. However, she was recently compelled to read the book Young Next Year by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge. The authors draw on the latest science of aging to help people 50 and over feel younger as they get older. “I can’t say I’m perfect and do everything it says to do, but I try. The idea of shifting your mind that you still have a whole lifetime in front of you. At 40, you’re only halfway there. We get to 45 and there’s a bit of enticement to feel like you’re done. No you’re not! You’re starting anew so you have to keep your mind and body physically prepared. Okay, you’re no longer young or the prettiest in the

food,” says the actress between takes. Hatcher stocks her kitchen with unprocessed foods and whole fresh foods, along with raw chia seeds, also known as salvia hispanica. “I eat them every day and even sprinkle them on yogurt or put in my smoothies,” she explains. What’s her guilty pleasure these days? She smiles mischievously at the question as her face lights up. “Well, there are these organic dark chocolate peanut butter cups that are special treats. And I love organic dark chocolate with salt and caramel.” As beautiful as Hatcher is on the outside, it’s the internal care she strives to give herself that reinforces her overall well-being, though she admits balancing out the emotional, physical and spiritual sides of life is a constant challenge. “Besides being a good mom as my greatest accomplishment,” she says, “I’ve been a good part of the community of people I touch,” alluding to her decision in 2006 to reveal to Vanity Fair that she had

been molested by a family member as a young child. “Through my survival of sexual abuse, other survivors have reached out to me and said how my strength was helpful for their own strength.” Hatcher is also involved with the Juvenile Arthritis Association, recently putting together a celebrity garage sale with proceeds benefiting this organization. “And through my career, there have been iconic moments where I’ve made people happy and entertained.” To ensure her own blissful days, Hatcher says you should“recognize it could be your last. You have to have the gratitude of being alive. The idea that you have a life, so in a way, you’re obligated to try and enjoy it.” A year after Desperate Housewives aired its last episode following an eight-year run, Hatcher’s life is no longer regimented by her hectic production schedule. She uses her newfound freedom to spend more time with the people closest to her. “When I cook, I always make it big affairs for between 20 and

30 people. And I mean there’s an appetizer, many side dishes, multiple meats and probably six different desserts. Plus, I do special vegan dishes for my vegan friends. It’s my way of showing love. I think cooking is one of the truest ways I can show love to people who come to my house. It’s hands-on work for sure, and I think it’s an old-fashioned idea to me of this delayed gratification. I usually start prepping days before so there’s a lot of thought and effort. I once had a chef friend tell me “don’t ever cook when you’re angry because the tension goes into your food.” And I want my meals to be wonderful and comforting.” Although she’s still learning how to craft magnificent dishes at the highest level of culinary and hospitality, Hatcher says “I encourage everyone to try and learn something new. It’s fun and it makes you feel alive.” V

/ BAL ANCED LIVING U.S. Her numerous television roles have also caught the attention of Hollywood decision-makers. She has two films coming out this year. One of them, Arthur Newman, is generating a lot of buzz in the lead up to the Toronto International Film Festival. Despite having a vibrant career, acting wasn’t her first choice. She classically trained at Canada’s Royal Academy of Dance, but an ankle injury steered her career in a different direction. “I felt I was going to segue into the storytelling side of things as opposed to the more physical dance side then. I had lost flexibility and the rigour that I needed to dance at the level I wanted to,” she explained. When the filming of her television show wraps up, she hopes to return to her Pilates regimen. “I keep telling my body soon, soon you’ll be able to exercise. I’m grateful though for all the years of dedication before I had my son that sort of gives me a leg to stand on now. But I say my jeans are like a bra – they hold everything in,” she laughs. “Seriously I miss Pilates for the peace of mind and the breathing…the connection less the aesthetic.”

Actress Kristin Lehman returns to the serenity of the Rockies By Bonnie Siegler Born and raised in Vancouver, Kristin Lehman has

returned to her roots after a stint in Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. With roles that have taken her to Toronto, Los Angeles and back to Vancouver in recent years, Lehman says she made a conscious decision to return home when she became pregnant with Sam, who’s now four-and-a-half years old. “Canada informed me and my life for so long, that I wanted to have Sam and raise him here, live life in Canada with my husband and son.” Known to audiences in Canada and the United States, Lehman was critically acclaimed for her role in AMC’s murder mystery The Killing. She now stars as single-mom, detective Angela Flynn on CTV’s Motive, which debuted right after the Super Bowl last February. This summer, the police drama will air on ABC in the

The former vegan revels in the fact that she has a strong working knowledge of how to eat healthy. “I was vegan when it wasn’t mainstream; when it was 70s brown rice, which is lovely but I didn’t want to give up my love of fine food. So I started altering the way I cook without sacrificing taste. I have a good working knowledge of nutrition.” With limited dairy and sugar, avoidance of GMO influenced foods, and little soy products, Lehman eats a good deal of protein, vegetables and healthy fats. “When I was much younger, I suffered from stomach issues which confounded me until I found out I was allergic to dairy. In fact, I found an old kindergarten admissions application my mom filled out which clearly stated that allergy. So I asked her why she was giving me big glasses of milk and she said at the time she wanted the best for me and was told by various people that your child has to have milk.” Nowadays most actors in their prime stick to a fairly strict diet. In that respect, Lehman is no different than the rest of her peers who trade their health and good looks for a paycheque, but sometimes temptation is too strong to ignore. “But there’s dark chocolate around too,” she says. Does this help balance out her healthy eating and cravings? “You know, our common idea of life’s balance is either everything is equal – energy, attention you give your relationships, attention you give your job, the attention you give yourself. I find as someone who is highly capable and has high standards for herself, that there is never a time I’m able to do all of that. But I know what I hope to enact in the world and where my values are. I’ve cultivated enough awareness in my life to see when I’m not balanced so I make a mental note and put my energy in that direction in some way. I think balanced living is truly about being able to live in a very realistic way with a lot of forgiveness.” VM

idiosyncrasies. “Between the two of us, we’re going to give her a good balance.” A Balancing Act

In fact, her quest for balance doesn’t happen by accident. “My philosophy is finding balance and inner peace. I don’t think any one person ever feels that they’re doing enough for their child, but you have to tell yourself ‘what I’m doing is good enough’. And that pretty much gives me an even keel in life. Like right now, I’m at my daughter’s school book fair and could be admonishing myself for not going to my dance class before coming here. But why? I can’t be mad at myself for the things I’m not accomplishing.” An Active Parent

Discovers Motherhood & Inner Peace By Bonnie Siegler Best known as the lead character in Oscar nominated ro-

mantic comedy, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Nia Vardalos now revels in the role of mother since adopting daughter, Ilaria in 2008. She shares the story in her new book, Instant Mom. The multi-talented mother, author, actress, screenwriter, singer and producer hopes to instill some of her family values into her daughter but admits it won’t be easy. “My husband is a New Yorker and I’m an over-polite Canadian. The motto of my province is Friendly Manitoba,” she says laughing at their

As part of her routine, Vardalos tries to include some form of exercise – dance, treadmill, weights – Monday through Friday. “That’s my me time”, she explains, “and on weekends, it’s my daughter’s time. But I do feel so much better once I’ve exercised. I drag myself to it, I hate exercising, but I love walking out of there for the feeling I get.” Vardalos also emphasizes that she needs time alone when she’s writing, but it doesn’t mean she enjoys sitting in a room by herself. “Oh no! I walk, I shop, I hang out with girlfriends because invariably with a script or story problem, it will unravel itself as I’m reaching for the creamer over coffee with my friends.” New Mom, New Diet

While maintaining a healthy lifestyle has always been an integral part of achieving inner peace, the arrival of Ilaria into her family has highlighted the importance of being healthy. “I want to be around for her,” the former vegetarian says, “so I look at my own health and longevity in a different light now. Our grocery bill has tripled because we suddenly became so aware of what we were putting into our daughter’s mouth that we realized, why aren’t we eating this way? So we have gone organic across the board. We have things in our refrigerator that we’d never have had before – like kale to make kale chips instead of eating potato chips. I said to my husband that our grocery bill is more expensive than a car lease.” VM

Radiant Faces

Some of the most beautiful women in the world share their beauty must-haves and how to keep your makeup looking fresh and shine-free all day this summer.

JESSICA BIEL Makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua gave Biel a sun-kissed glow with a dusting of blush to create a romantic evening look. She used Chanel’s Powder Blush In Love. And to keep Biel’s sparking eyes subtle, Bua blended a shimmery blue with taupe shadow at the outer corner. She chose Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadow in Destination. THE NATURAL WAY Brighten up your face with a tinted foundation that will hydrate your skin and give it a healthy radiance. Pomegranate*, which is found in some natural foundations, acts as an antioxidant to moisturize and defend against damage.

MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG “It’s never too early to start using wrinkle-reducing creams.” She likes to use Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Night Cream. It increases cell turnover to keep skin firm. THE NATURAL WAY If you want to combat the visible signs of aging, this rich night cream will smooth your facial lines and help you turn back the clock. It helps deliver anti-oxidant, hydration protection and revitalization. It uses pure emu oil*, silk amino acid, clover phytoestrogen and microalgae.

NICKI MINAJ The singer and American Idol judge always makes a statement with her wardrobe and makeup. She likes dramatic eyes and enjoys the ease of a liquid eyeliner, choosing Dior Style Liner Intense Liquid Eyeliner. THE NATURAL WAY Enriched with vitamin E, this sugar-based natural liquid eyeliner contains kaolin clay so it will stay on all day and won’t smear or smudge. It only contains natural and vegan ingredients readily biodegradable. A superior alternative for your sensitive eyes and our environment!

LUCY LIU “I use Moroccanoil Extra Volume Shampoo every other day. It gives my hair amazing volume and keeps it free of split ends.” THE NATURAL WAY The secret to gorgeous flowing locks lies in the tea tree oil*. This oil, used in traditional medicine, not only boosts the immune system; it also fights off harmful environmental factors such as pollution and bacteria, which are known to weaken hair follicles.

Inspired Living

viva readers share their secrets to attaining optimal health, naturally. Here are a few of the people who have inspired our staff members over the years.

*ERIN’S PICK Name: Andrew / Age: 40 Occupation: HVAC technician health issue: anxiety // Symptoms: I spent my 20s racing mountain bikes, finishing school, travelling around the world and living life to its fullest every day. Suddenly I looked back over the past few years and noticed I had stopped doing as much. I had a fear of enclosed spaces, so it was hard to travel by plane or train. I developed such anxiety over the possibility of having a heart attack that I was actually having chest pains, even though the doctors could not find a problem. // Health recommendations: I did some research and found a mindfulnessbased program called mindshift, so I signed up. In this program I learned that areas of the brain that were designed to keep us alive in youth start to work against us as we age, and we can develop anxieties or fear. I started working on putting the anxiety where it belongs, and I started meditating. // The results: Now with meditation, the anxiety is controlled; my mind can tell the difference between real and perceived fear. I have gone back to living life to its fullest, and I have no problem getting out of my comfort zone. I’m looking forward to the second half of my life being just as good as the first.

*LIO’S PICK Name: CarolyN / Age: 53 Occupation: Executive director health issue: energy AND MEMORY loss, depression, anxiety, fuzzy thinking, weight gain // Symptoms: I suffered from miserable post-partum depression after my last child was born, and was put on antidepressants, which was a blessing at the time. Years later, I was still on them and not feeling well. Once sharp as a tack, I was struggling with memory loss. I thought I had early-onset Alzheimer’s and felt absolutely desperate. I had anxiety, was overweight and didn’t have much energy to get on an exercise program. // Health recommendations: My MD tested me for low thyroid, and said the results weren’t low enough to warrant putting me on medication. I sought the care of a naturopath and took the blood test results to him. He said naturopaths judge the levels differently, and gave me a prescription, some supplements and recommended some dietary changes, to help get me through the anti-depressant detox period with as few side effects as possible. // The results: Today I feel like a new person, waking up peppy and optimistic every day, with a clear head. I can remember short and long-term details without a problem. Best of all, I have energy to exercise and have lost 25 pounds.

*HENRY’S PICK Name: Christine / Age: 47 Occupation: Dental receptionist health issue: chronic back pain // Symptoms: From a very young age I was diagnosed with kyphosis, lordosis and scoliosis, and suffered from chronic back pain. The pain caused me discomfort and prevented me from fully enjoying my life. I decided to seek a better life through exercise and nutrition. // Health recommendations: I was always aware of the food that I ate. I then began to make even more of an effort to be conscientious about my diet by eating simple, fresh, home-cooked meals. A visit to my naturopathic doctor helped me determine specific food to avoid as well as supplemental support that would be beneficial to my overall heath. // The results: Yoga came to me about 15 years ago, and through many years of dedicated practice has helped me tremendously to achieve my health goals. Practicing yoga faithfully once a week, being aware of my foods and taking my supplements, I slowly became stronger and more flexible in my body and in my mind. Today, I practice and teach yoga and I am also able to enjoy all kinds of other activities, feeling healthier than ever.

*OLIVIER’S PICK Name: Azrah / Age: 23 Occupation: Masters student health issue: tonsilitis // Symptoms: I had chronic tonsillitis for one-and-ahalf years, and it was wearing me down. I was getting sick every two to three weeks and getting infected tonsils four to six times per year. After I had tried the usual salt water gargle and many rounds of antibiotics, my doctor recommended surgery to remove my tonsils. I decided to see a naturopathic doctor to seek natural treatment. // Health recommendations: My ND, Dr. Kanji, recommended some herbs to boost my immune system and some at-home treatments to prevent my chronic tonsil infections. He also gave me advice on tonsil irrigation, other than salt water gargling, that helped. // The results: I have been tonsillitis-free for five months now since doing the treatments. My immune system has strengthened, and I get sick less throughout the year. I didn’t have to get the surgery to remove my tonsils!

Immortal Spain by Bonnie Siegler

EIGHT DAYS IN MADRID with a side trip to Caceres, revealed

a country high in energy, steeped in tradition, proud of its history and embracing an eco-sustainable lifestyle. Each region of Spain is well worth a visit – or two or more. What attracts tourists to one destination over another is totally subjective, however Spain’s history, museums, artists, food and the vibrancy of its people make it a magnet for international travellers. As the country’s capital and metropolis, Madrid looms large over the rest of Spain. It has some of the greatest museums in the world. Museo Nacional Del Prado houses well over 8,000 paintings, including the centerpiece of the museum, Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez. One of the most popular Spanish plazas is Puerta del Sol, which even on a cool wintery day, misty Spring evening or hot summer night, is filled with people watching jug-

glers and puppet shows while others shop in the many boutiques and stores off the plaza, and dine well past midnight. It’s a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy the surroundings with a churro or gelato in hand. LOCATED just a few minutes away from Puerta del Sol is the

Hotel Urban; its central location makes it a natural jump off point due to its proximity to other tourist sites, including the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Royal Palace and Reina Sofia, a centuries-old building where modern art is displayed. Hotel Urban has 102 rooms designed in a minimalist style, and combines Egyptian, Chinese, Hindu and African pieces for display offering its guests art, culture and luxury. “We also consider eco-sustainable factors in our hotel”, says general manager Xavi Vega. “We adhere to water consumption reduction, non-toxic clean-

ing agents, energy-efficient lighting and heating, plus we serve local-grown food in our restaurants.” A recycling program is in place and guests are encouraged to throw plastic bottles in the bins. In fact, the hotel’s slogan captures its spirit: Together for a better world. At the hotel’s Europa Deco restaurant, signature dishes run the gamut from “crunchy suckling pig on rice salad to tuna toro tartar with soja and wasabi vinaigrette. And don’t forget “The Passion” – white chocolate mousse with cookie

Unique within Atrio is the ever-changing natural light coming through the hotel’s distinctive construction design that constantly changes as the morning turns into afternoon and evening. “The interaction of the changing natural light with the building’s architectural elements is forever evolving. The slow progressions of the volumes that make up the building follow a simple, unified architectural canon in harmony with its natural surroundings.” With immaculate white-gloved service and an unparal-

Also located in the Urban hotel is the Glass Bar cocktail and oyster bar. “Sunday mornings are busy with our brunch… the best way to start a Sunday,” explains Vega. Near the Plaza Mayor (Main Square) sits Sobrino de botin, a

restaurant established in 1725, known as the world’s oldest continuously operating restaurant. Master painter Goya once worked there as a dishwasher. The place was also a favourite of American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway, who gave it a nod in The Sun Also Rises. Instead of tearing down the brick walls originally built in 1590 for the inn, the ground floor in 1725 was restored and the open arches closed. In those days, the oven was built as one of the main parts of the house, which has contributed to its longevity. Traditional dishes are served daily.

leled team that delivers on a guest’s every whim, Atrio also offers an epicurean delight – from its pureed shrimp and caviar dish to its lemon meringue petit fours that melt in your mouth – all nicely complimented by a wine cellar that boasts over 40,000 bottles, including some of Europe’s finest wines. The simplicity and flavour of all the dishes – most of which are locally sourced foods and produce - suits the most demanding palettes. The tireless quest to offer its guests a tranquil retreat should make Atrio a must-see destination for any traveller. Juan Antonio Perez and Jose Polo are behind Atrio’s architectural elements and culinary cuisine and are often seen on the premises, ensuring their guests enjoy an unforgettable encounter of culture and history. VM

If you want to trade the big city for something much smaller, a

three-hour train ride will take you to Caceres, a former colony founded by the Romans in 34 B.C. In the 12th century, walls were built over the Roman foundations, but defensive towers, turrets and walls still remain amidst narrow, winding cobblestone pathways. Caceres is well worth a visit. It will take you back several centuries as you walk through the cobblestone pathways through the former Jewish Ghetto, many plazas and squares, and even an extensive museum of modern art. Located in the heart of the old town with pedestrian access only, is the Atrio Restaurante Hotel, a 14-room contemporary luxury hotel built in 2010. It uses its space to promote tranquility with “our warm colours, usage of local wood throughout and natural light”, points out Carmine Marquez, the hotel’s director. “Atrio means atrium and it’s a point where all pathways that lead from this area offer breathtaking views from our hotel, while appreciating the natural lighting throughout the property. The general ambiance is tranquility within a world of senses. We hope our guests take home a sense of calm, peace and happiness.”

Gemini

By Chrissie Blaze

GEMINI_May 21-June 21 Take initiative now! The Sun and unstoppable Mars in your sign give you the green light. Put selfimprovement on your agenda to enhance your self-worth. Your great ideas draw career breakthroughs. Slow down when your ruler, Mercury, goes retrograde from June 26-July 20. July is a great month to get more out of life by setting long-term goals. CANCER_June 22-July 22

June is an extraordinary month when you can manifest your dreams; first you still have issues to clear from the past. The Sun enters your Sign, followed by abundant Jupiter on June 25, promising a year of expansion and opportunity. On July 13, Mars enters Cancer until August 27, bringing vitality and firing you up for action.

LEO_July 23-Aug. 22

Focus on expressing your generous heart this month. There is significant planetary activity compelling you to meditation and quiet pursuits. Embrace these and you will receive more love, friendship and joy. On June 27, Venus moves into your sign; you are almost impossible to resist! July brings a renewed sense of purpose, which builds throughout the summer.

VIRGO_Aug. 23-Sept. 22

Industrious Saturn joins with imaginative Neptune on June 11, empowering you to sharpen your instincts in business. You can now focus on your goals and ground your ideas. Your ruler, Mercury, goes retrograde on June 26, reminding you that promises can easily unravel. Be cautious until July 20 when Mercury goes direct and Mars brings energy and excitement.

LIBRA_Sept. 23-Oct. 23

You are adept at sweet-talking your way out of difficult situations; however, beware of manipulative people around June 11, when your

ruler, Venus, opposes Pluto. Towards the end of June, career opportunities lead to increased income and responsibilities over the next year. July 27-31 are high energy days when the planets are urging you to claim your power.

SCORPIO_Oct. 24–Nov. 21

Long hours and increased responsibility come your way with Saturn in Scorpio. Schedule exercise as a key to increase vitality and combat stress. A judgmental New Moon on June 23 suggests that you temper your emotions to avoid conflicts with loved ones. A Venus Pluto trine on July 27 uncovers your inner potential, urging you to accomplishment.

SAGITTARIUS_Nov. 22-Dec. 21

June is a volatile month relationship month, bringing greater commitment or the ending of a partnership. A Mars Jupiter conjunction on July 22, urges you to express your deepest feelings. The Full Moon in Capricorn on June 23 brings financial matters to a head, clearing the decks for stronger financial foundations. July is a good month to seek adventure.

CAPRICORN_Dec. 22-Jan. 19

Change has become a part of your life over the past five years. On June 3, a Grand Trine of Mercury, Saturn and Neptune, helps prepare you for the transformation taking place in your inner world, and the world around you. Magically, others offer incredible support. As July begins, you feel ready, physically and mentally, for new challenges ahead.

AQUARIUS_Jan. 20-Feb. 18

You begin the month stressed but brilliant ideas enable you to gain the freedom you need. Keep yourself grounded with yoga and calming exercise and you’ll achieve success. Don’t begin new things until after Mercury goes direct on July 20. The Full Moon in your sign on July 22 brings completion to unfinished projects.

PISCES_Feb. 19-Mar. 20

In June, focus on being a team player and you’ll gain the support you need. Love could magically appear around June 7 with Venus trine your ruler, Neptune, and the Sun and Jupiter bringing romance. July 17-20 is a perfect time to balance your dreams with reality. Gentle walks in Nature boost your creativity and health.

ARIES_Mar. 21-Apr. 19

You’re energetic but scattered as June begins, with your ruler, Mars, aligned with the Sun in Gemini. Focus with calming activities like deep breathing, yoga or Qigong; this will help prepare you for a contemplative period ahead. The planets on July 20 remind you of the secret of your success; do one thing with all your heart.

TAURUS_Apr. 20-May 20

Dramatic planetary forces at work are increasing the pressure to change. As the landscape of your life changes around you, rely on inner strength to resist getting swept along. Keep faith and face your fears; Mercury’s square to Uranus and the
