The Cotswolds

Worcestershire is referred to as The Gateway to the Cotswolds with south Worcestershire part of the North Cotswolds. Once you have visited the honey coloured village of Broadway and enjoyed the vistas across the Cotswolds from Fish Hill you can journey deeper into England’s largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Worcester Walks For the last fifteen years our Blue and Green Badge Guides have been conducting our popular ‘Elgar Walks’ around the City, which are in great demand during the three Choirs festival.

Worcestershire Breathtaking scenery, a rich heritage and numerous attractions make North Worcestershire and its five towns an ideal day out or short break destination.

MIXING THE ANCIENT AND MODERN Built within the Royal Feckenham Forest, covering large parts of west Worcestershire, Redditch benefits from a mix of old and new. Bordesley Abbey Visitor Centre, set along the ruins of a medieval Cistercian Abbey which gave the town it’s name (The Red Dyche) sits nicely next to Forge Mill - a needle museum, showing a vivid illustration of how once upon a time, 90 per cent of the world’s needles were produced in the town. The Visitor Centre has a large pleasant grassed area, a park with picnic tables and children’s play area.

Arrow Valley Park is one of two National Green Flag parks in Redditch and covers over 900 acres. It’s hard to believe you’re in an urban environment when walking or cycling around this vast open space. The focal point is the Visitor Centre, situated with lakeside panoramic views, which you can enjoy from the indoor cafe or outside picnic tables. An extensive playground area with slides, climbing nets, swings and frames feature in this multilevel, state of the art play area. The free outside gym completes this most special attraction.

NORTH WORCESTERSHIRE From the Norman Conquest onwards, the Hanbury Estate was within the boundaries of the Royal Forest of Feckenham.

The 18th century Hanbury Hall (under the care of the National Trust) is open to the public all year round.

Just round the corner is the Jinney Ring Craft Centre - containing 12 designer/ maker craft shops. There is a charming old barn restaurant, complete with log fire and conservatory, which has views of the Malvern Hills. The duck ponds and ducks are very popular at this attraction as are the landscaped gardens, which have become home to many modern sculptures as well as music and arts festivals. A short distance away is the canal-side craft centre at Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove offering an upholsterer, artists, hair and beauty salons, antiques and collectables, a fudge maker and much more. There’s also a cafe on site and a pub just opposite - so it’s well worth a visit.

At The Transport Museum at Wythall you will find a collection of buses and battery electric vehicles such as electric bread and milk floats, plus a miniature steam railway that operates

PLENTY OF HISTORY on event days. Along with ‘Kids Kabin’ activity and picnic area’s, cafe and souvenir shop you are sure to have a great day out.

Avoncroft Open Air Museum cares for a collection of several thousand objects that reflect the life and work that went on within buildings and structures of Historic Buildings. Special collections housed within 19 acres of grounds, include The National Telephone Kiosk Collection. As well as events through the year it houses an award winning

Edwardian Tea Room.

Over in Bewdley, and set in a historic Butchers Shambles, the fascinating displays at Bewdley Museum give an insight into the trades and crafts of the Wyre Forest area in a delightful setting. With hands-on activities and regular craft demonstrations there’s plenty to see and do for the whole family, including the brass foundry, jails, resident crafts people, air raid shelter tours, varied exhibitions and events. Make sure you also take time for a well-earned break in the café set within attractive walled gardens.

With a stroll around the delightful museum grounds and the adjoining Jubilee Gardens, it’s the perfect way to relax and unwind.

The Worcestershire County Museum, near both Kidderminster and Stourport, is housed in historic Hartlebury Castle. Whether you are looking for a chance to learn about everything from Romans to Regency, a peaceful stroll through nature or just a nice cup of tea and a cake the Museum offers plenty for a day out.

Severn Valley Railway operates mainly steamhauled passenger trains along the beautiful Severn Valley between Kidderminster, Bewdley & Bridgnorth, a journey of about 16 miles. There is no better way to see superb views of the River Severn than from one of these ‘standard gauge’, full size, steam-hauled trains.

Shops, refreshments and pubs are available in and around most stops and be sure to include a visit to the ‘Engine House’ at Highley to complete your visit.

Severn Valley Railway hosts regular events and themed weekends throughout the year as does the country’s only museum dedicated to carpet manufacturing. The Museum of Carpet, in the historic Stour Vale Mill is Kidderminster’s living legacy to more than 300 years of carpet heritage. See large working looms, colourful carpets and the traditional skills of spinning and handloom weaving.

The Clent Hills are graced with several classically inspired architectural works from about the 1750s. Most of them are in the private grounds of 18th Century Hagley Hall, which is open to the public.

Bewdley is the gateway to the ancient Forest of Wyre, featuring a cafe and Discovery Centre. Its surrounding woodlands are fantastic places to enjoy the fresh air and have fun outdoors. There is something for everyone all year round, from walking and family cycling to Go Ape - High Wire adventure.

Arley Arboretum near Kidderminster is another natural beauty - discover a tranquil wonderland of rare and ancient trees, exquisite walled gardens and panoramic views.

Think Plums!

August in Pershore is instantly synonymous with plums and purple.

The Pershore plum story started in the 1830s when a landlord of the Butcher’s Arms pub in Church Street discovered a seedling of a wild plum growing in the ancient Tiddesley Wood on the outskirts of Pershore.

This became known as the Pershore Yellow Egg Plum.

For the whole month, the delightful market town of Pershore turns purple to celebrate the love of the fruit that made the town so famous. A triple winner of Worcestershire Best Festival and Event award, coupled with being an internationally renowned event, the Pershore Plum Festival is a unique and quirky festival with events and activities that cater for the whole family cumulating over August Bank Holiday Weekend!

Then in 1890 Mr. Walter Martin of Drakes Broughton tried a plum experiment in which he transferred pollen from the ‘Old Black’ or ‘Purple Diamond’ to the ‘Rivers Early Prolific’.

It was named ‘Martin’s Seedling’ but soon became better known as the hugely popular ‘Purple Pershore’ to which it is still known.

During the food shortage of the First World War Pershore fruit and plums were delivered by train

throughout the country.

This was commemorated in 1927 with Great Western Railways naming the first and only train after a fruit… The Pershore Plum!

The juicy reputation of the area’s plums was also remembered in a horse race, the popular ‘The Land O’Plums Chase’. After 72 years, in celebration of the continued success of the area’s plums – Worcester Racecourse has revived this historic race which is run as part of The Pershore Plum Festival celebrations.

The festival was resurrected in 1996 by four locals, Environmentalist David

Shaw, Historian Marion Freeman, John Edgeley and Ron Jeynes all sharing the passion for the famous Pershore plum. The Pershore Plum Fayre aimed to increase awareness and profile of Pershore and its association with plums.

Over the next 12 years, the event grew in size and popularity and in 2008 the one day event became the spectacle that we know today expanding to a month long festival and is now one of the most successful events the town has ever seen.

WYCHAVON Sunday 3 July The Plum celebrations start with the Plum Princess Garden Party held at The Angel Hotel.

This unique themed garden party includes: fancy dress, music, games, refreshments and the crowning of the 2016 Plum Princess and her attendants.

Tuesday 26 July On this date the festival resurrects its prestigious history to return with the Pershore Plum Festival Race Night. An evening full of Victorian and Edwardian history of the Land O’ Plums Chase, a horse race ran many years ago in celebration of the famous Pershore Plum. Hosted by Worcester Racecourse you can expect an evening of exciting jumping action at this picturesque, tree-lined racecourse, nestling on the banks of the river Severn.

Thursday 11, Thursday 18, Thursday 25 August With the help of the Evesham Vale Tour Guides and Dudley’s Coaches, the Pershore Plum Festival is delighted to offer a unique experience for plum lovers of all ages with exciting guided tours featuring the beautiful Georgian town of Pershore and its famous fruit.

You can be sure the Plum guides will produce the ‘Plum goods’ for your entertainment throughout the day!

Thursday 25 August With a “new look” this year, the Pershore Plum Festival is delighted to promote the 999 Bike Nite where bikers from all facets of the emergency services and the South Midlands Bike Club meet for a night of fun, bikes and plenty of food and drink. Whether it’s a moped, motor bike, scooter, chopper or trike all are welcome – but please wear purple!

Saturday 27 – Monday 29 August This August Bank Holiday Weekend will continue as a three day extravaganza of purple plum fun. Don’t miss The Angel Hotel Big Plum, Beer, and Food & Music Festival taking place across all three days.

Pershore will be full to the brim with purple plummy pleasures providing a plum crazy weekend for visitors coming from far and wide. The Plum Festival Fayre Day on Bank Holiday Monday, is a fun day out for all the family at Pershore’s three time award winning event with attractions throughout the town including Plum Alley (plums, tastings, and plum products including soaps, sausages and jams), classic and vintage cars,

award winning famers’ market, boat trips, arts and crafts, children’s activities and a food village. Also new for this year is the expansion of successful Sunday’s family fun day, which also includes a Plum Pooches Dog Show and a Teddy Bears’ Plum Praise service.

MALVERN HILLS The substance which gave Malvern its unique place in history is to become the centrepiece of a brand new event being introduced in 2016.

The Great Malvern Water Festival, supported by Malvern Hills District Council, will celebrate the impact water had on Malvern’s development from a village to a bustling town as well as the history behind its famous water cure.

Held between Saturday 30 April and Monday 2 May the three day event will be packed full of exciting activities including water well dressing, tours, live music, competitions, open air cinema, arts and crafts and much more. The new Festival coincides with the popular Malvern Well Dressing Weekend organised by the Malvern Spa Association which is a well-established event on Malvern’s social calendar.

The beneficial properties of Malvern’s water have been talked about for around 400 years but it was during the 19th century that water cure therapy (also known as hydrotherapy) took off. It was first brought to Great Malvern in 1842 by Dr James Wilson and Dr James

Gully who set up practices in the area. The Victorian popularity of the cure transformed Malvern into a water cure town.

Tenbury Countryside Show and Upton upon Severn Jazz and Blues Festivals to enjoy, while there will also be regular vintage, craft and farmers’ markets throughout the year.

This year will also see the roll out of a series of outdoor cinema events hosted by Malvern Hills District Council and Malvern Town Council. It follows the success of an outdoor

screening of Jaws in Priory Park in September to mark the classic film’s 40th anniversary.

There’s so much the district has to offer including breath-taking scenery, wonderful walks and delightful places to eat. So come and enjoy the district this summer and see what you can discover.

It was so popular it was used by famous faces such as Florence Nightingale, Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin.

Even though the popularity of the cure has declined and can no longer be taken in Malvern although many of the buildings remain in use - Malvern’s water continues to be bottled today by an independent family owned company and is branded as Holywell Malvern Spring Water.

The Great Malvern Water Festival will join an already packed events programme on offer throughout the district.

Highlights include the return of the Great Malvern Food Festival in May which sees people flock to the town to sample an array of local produce on offer. There’s also the Malvern Rocks Festival,

SPETCHLEY PARK OPENS ITS GARDENS IN 2016 AFTER BIGGEST REVIVALS IN ITS 400 YEAR HISTORY 2016 sees the gardens at Spetchley Park open having been through one of the biggest revivals in its 400 year history. The garden lake has been completely restored, the old cart sheds have been converted into a heritage learning and interpretation centre and the parkland put back to its 19th Century landscape. In July, the park will welcome back the 19th Century Sovereign Coach from being conserved, it is one of only 20 such coaches in the country and will be on display for visitors to see.

Highlights include a Specialist Plant Fair on Sunday 24 April and on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August 800 military re-enactors descend on Spetchley with their ‘History Comes Alive’ weekend. Born 300 years ago, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown changed the face of landscapes in eighteenth century England, designing country estates and mansions, moving hills and making flowing lakes and serpentine rivers with Croome being one of his most significant landscapes.

His work involved digging up formal gardens, draining marshland to create new lakes and streams and even moving entire villages out of sight. The parkland at

Croome was nearly lost, but is now great for walks and adventures with a temple, folly or statue around every corner. At the heart of the park lies Croome Court which Brown also remodelled tells the story of its electric past in creative ways with four floors waiting to be discovered.

To celebrate the tercentenary of Brown’s birth (known as ‘Capability’ because he would tell clients that their estates had great ‘capabilities’ for landscape improvements) the National Trust Croome is holding a series of lectures, walks and exhibitions throughout 2016.

The Commandery, Worcester The Commandery is a Grade I listed building dating back to the 12th century. It played a vital role during the English Civil War as Headquarters for the Royalist Soldiers, and decisions made here changed the way that Great Britain was governed, creating the democracy we enjoy today.

The Commandery dates back much further than the Civil War. Tradition has it that the building was founded as a hospital around 1085 by Saint Wulfstan, then Bishop of Worcester. Most of the building however dates from

the late fifteenth century and is of timber framed construction.

Having undergone many changes over the centuries, The Commandery will soon be featuring new displays focusing on its role in the English Civil War. In 1761 the 6th Earl of Coventry acquired the beacon hill above Broadway adjoining his estate at Spring Hill. He commissioned ‘Capability’ Brown to redesign the estate at Croome Court and his Spring Hill retreat. Droitwich Spa Food & Drink Festival The Droitwich Spa Food & Drink Festival was set up in 2013 and after only 4 years has become a leading foodie festival in the Midlands with some 130 exhibitors and an estimated 15,000 visitors.

This year’s event will be held over two days Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 June in Droitwich Town Centre and Vines Park.

Nadiya Hussain winner of The Great British Bake Off 2015 will open the event and

provide a food demonstration on the Saturday.

There will be a demonstration kitchen featuring local and national chefs, junior bake off competition and entertainment for families.

As well as our own excellent food & drink producers in Worcestershire, the Festival will feature producers from the surrounding counties.

SALT FEST Salt Fest celebrates Droitwich Spa’s unique salt heritage.

The event takes place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September and is a great day out for families. The Romans will be setting up their camp in Vines Park, for the weekend, along with community and craft stalls, live music, real ale bar and boat trips.

This vibrant, familyfriendly and interactive festival celebrates all things Chilli with authentic live music, hot food, bars, cookery demonstrations and a children’s cookery school. both days of the festival is the infamous Chilli Eating Competition, run by the Clifton Chilli Club, where crowds gather on the Valley Lawn to watch participants test their chilli-heat limits with an array of carefully selected chillies.
