MALVERN HILLS

MALVERN HILLS Pick up your iPad or mobile phone and you might not realise that its liquid crystal display technology was discovered and developed in Malvern. Radar scientists were evacuated to Malvern in 1942 under threat of German bombing and through this twist of fate, Malvern became a world class centre for technology and research. This has led to Malvern playing a significant role in the development of many ground breaking devices such as LCD screens, computers, microwave cookers, radio astronomy, thermal imaging, communications satellites and X-ray detectors used in

14

Medical CAT scanners to name but a few, things that we now take for granted in everyday life. Malvern is maintaining a leading role in scientific development gaining the title ‘Cyber Valley’. So important are the new cyber technologies that Malvern now holds its own ‘Festival of Innovation’ (Tuesday 6 - Sunday 11 October) in venues around the town showcasing achievements of local high-tech businesses and attracting speakers

from home and abroad. Cyber tourism starts here! The Malverns are a year round holiday destination offering breath-taking scenery and also high quality arts and entertainment. One of the key events in the calendar is the ‘Autumn in Malvern Festival’ that runs

throughout October. This internationally recognised classical arts and music event attracts performers and audiences from around the world. The main guests this year are the ‘European Union Chamber Orchestra’. Malvern St James School host the ‘Dulcimer World Congress’.

Over 200 different varieties of fruit are displayed at this annual event and there are also many other stalls selling everything from contemporary crafts to gourmet food. Tenbury is also world famous for its mistletoe with events staged around the town during December. Drama, storytelling and music

NATURE’S MASTERPIECES – TAMED

800th anniversary of the death of King John In October 1216, King John’s kingdom was in ruins, so when he drew up his last testament he urged his executors to do all in their power to help his sons. As for himself, he commended his body to the monks of Worcester cathedral and his immortal soul to the two Worcester saints. He died not long after on the night of 18 October 1216, his body was carried from Newark to Worcester and he was laid to rest in the Cathedral. The

18 CENTURY BRIDGE REINSTATED AT CROOME COURT

and linked the house to the wider parkland.

A visit to the National Trust Croome, in south Worcestershire, sees the return of the imposing Chinese Bridge to the stunning ‘Capability’ Brown landscape.

20

Originally designed by William Halfpenny in the 1740s for the 6th Earl of Coventry in the popular Chinese style, the bridge spanned the river close to the Court

William Dean, the Earl’s Head Gardener wrote of the bridge: “This sort of Bridge, of which Brown was too fond, modern taste would reject as two light in form, and too glaring in appearance, to suit with the grandeur of our English park scenery.”

It is the only feature that survived Brown’s revolutionary re-design of Croome’s landscape and house which was his first major solo commission, proving that Brown must have been a fan! The bridge was later lost to decay and rot in the late 19th century. Thanks to generous funding, the bridge has now been re-created and now majestically spans the river where visitors can enjoy far reaching views of the parkland. 01905 371006 www.nationaltrust.org.uk/croome

Elgar Birthplace Museum

Edward Elgar, England’s greatest composer, once said “There is music in the air”. There certainly is when you are in Worcestershire and more often than not, the music is Elgar’s. He was inspired by

the beauty of the countryside and the history of the area, both of which come out in his music – the Enigma Variations, featuring Nimrod and the Pomp & Circumstance Marches to name but two.

Set in a lovely country garden, the cottage where he was born is now a museum honouring him. Elgar’s desk is there, laid out as if waiting for him to return. It is now complemented by a visitor centre, including a shop and café, and where manuscripts and other treasures are exhibited. 01905 333224 birthplace@elgarmuseum.org www.elgarmuseum.org

The 21-bedrom hotel in Worcestershire, which has been nominated for three successive years, finally lifted the coveted title on night May 11 at a glittering ceremony at the Sage Gateshead. Commenting on the award James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive, said “We

received hundreds of applications of an exceptionally high quality making the competition for a Gold Award extremely tough. It is therefore a tremendous achievement for Brockencote Hall to win a Gold Award, the highest accolade for Excellence in Tourism which VisitEngland

can bestow. They have raised the bar for excellence for others to aspire to and I warmly congratulate them on their exemplary contribution to tourism in this country.” 01562 777876 www.brockencotehall.com

Tucked away beneath Worcestershire’s famous Malvern Hills, Stanbrook Abbey is a venue packed full of extraordinary features. Set within 22 acres of stunning grounds which are themselves surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty, an extensive but sympathetic refurbishment has made the Abbey the amazing venue it is today. The former convent is constructed of red brick, with stone dressings and Gothic windows. Together with the abbey church, the convent was designed by Edward

Welby Pugin, son of the renowned 18th century architect Augustus Pugin. Stanbrook Abbey’s extensive gardens and picturesque grounds include a beautiful, lavender-filled butterfly garden and weeping willows trailing into a private lake. Not to be outdone, the Abbey’s interior will take your breath away. Experience the Callow Great Hall with its ornate vaulted ceiling and mesmerising stained glass windows, or relax to the sound of our grand piano in the Piano Lounge.

Recently, 52 bedroom doors opened to reveal the most charismatic bedroom suites the county has ever seen. Previously nun’s cells, the bedrooms now play host to king size beds framed by cloister inspired bed steads, power steam showers and free standing baths ready to relax and unwind. As well as the usual culprits such as flat screen TVs and luxury amenities, Stanbrook pride themselves on the quirky touches in each individually styled bedroom; from original wood carvings to private balconies, each

The new Barclays Premier League 2015/16 kicked off at the beginning of August with the new additions of Norwich City, AFC Bournemouth and Watford. West Bromwich Albion welcomed new signings James McClean from Wigan Athletic, James Chester from Hull City and Rickie Lambert from Liverpool. The first team faced some challenging conditions with pre-season visits to Austria and The United States of America and had a difficult start to the season against Manchester City but under the leadership of Head Coach Tony Pulis they are hoping for a good campaign.

For everyone that attended the crunch clash with Bristol, it will live long in the memory for what was one of the most breathtaking matches many rugby fans will ever witness. And now the wheels are in motion as the club looks to establish itself as one of the country’s elite sides over the coming seasons.

BE PART OF THE WARRIORS JOURNEY Dean Ryan’s men will test themselves against the likes of Saracens, Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints as they look to sustain themselves as a competitive outfit in this season’s Aviva Premiership.
