Worcestershire Inspired Tolkien to Create Hobbit’s Middle Earth J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit lived in Worcestershire when he was young, and often used to walk on the Clent Hills (National Trust), Lickey Hills and the Malvern Hills when he was an adult which are said to have been a huge inspiration to his books. Tolkien would often walk the hills with C.S. Lewis and joint friend George Sayer and relive his books, comparing parts of the Malvern Hills to the White Mountains of Gondor. TOP TEN SPOT FOR NATIONAL GARDENING SHOW! The Malvern Spring Gardening Show now ranks a very respectable 4th (three places above the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show!), in a list of Britain’s top 10 horticultural events. 2,300 members of Which? Gardening magazine, were invited to consider gardening shows right across the country and rate them in terms of overall ‘feel’, features, quality of exhibits, non-gardening content, facilities, location and access. The Malvern show is a partnership between the Three Counties Agricultural Society and the Royal Horticultural Society, and Which? Gardening readers were extremely complimentary about the event, which is now in its 28th year. Unsurprisingly, the Show’s ‘lovely location’ at the foot of the magnificent Malvern Hills in Worcestershire, was a major draw.

Britain’s Blossom Trail turns 30! The UK’s only Blossom Trail, which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world, celebrates its 30th birthday in Spring 2013. Worcestershire ‘s Vale of Evesham - often referred to as the Garden of England - has been famous for its many varieties of fruit since Medieval times. The 50-mile Blossom Trail is a riot of pink and white flowers comprising apple, pear, plum, damson and cherry blossom. When the blossom is at its best, it’s also meant to be a sign that spring has officially started. People can walk, cycle or drive the Blossom Trail by themselves or they can take one of the official Blossom Coach Tours. As well as enjoying the spectacular scenery, the tour takes in a host of farm shops, pubs and nurseries who all celebrate the Blossom Trail and attempt to make the connection between blossom and fruit through themed produce, menus and demonstrations for example Apple scones, Blossom Marmalade, Pershore Plum Jam and Blossom Cake. www.visitworcestershire.org/blossomtrail
A Ring Rich in Wildlife The Mid Worcestershire Ring allows boats, cyclists and walkers to make a 21-mile circular journey through some of the Britain’s most beautiful and historic countryside. As part of the canal restoration project, a linear park has been created providing picnic sites, fishing pegs, and new stop off points for boaters, walkers and cyclists. Miles of towpath have also been upgraded, with new and improved access points and 26 new visitor moorings. The area is also rich in wildlife so everyone can enjoy the sights and sounds of nature up close including the Coney Meadow Reed Bed which is a thriving wildlife habitat located close to the quiet little village of Salwarpe. MALVERN WALKING FESTIVAL Malvern Walking Festival 2013 programme (May 25th - June 2nd) was launched 1st January with a record 42 walks, ranging from “Teddy Bears Picnic” to “Worcestershire Way in a Day”, with lots of guided interest walks in between. B E HOL D T H E QU E E N OF S C U L P T U R E If you want to see something truly extraordinary go to Malvern Spring Gardening Show at the Three Counties Showground 9th - 12th May 2013. Here, in addition to fantastic show gardens and hundreds of fabulous exhibits, you will find the sculptor Caro Sweet. ‘Caro’ is the ‘Artist in Residence’ for the show again this year,” says Showground Communications Manager Sharon Gilbert. “In just four days the sculpture she came up with last year was extraordinary! Because it was Jubilee year, the brief we gave to Caro was, if there were a Queen of plants, what would she look like?”

“Sharon and the Showground staff are brilliant to work with,” says Caro. “They provide me with everything I need. This year, even by lunchtime on the first day, I expect to have completed the big charcoal working drawings, taken measurements and started building the armature. A huge success story, the distinctive festival has grown exponentially since it was first staged in 2008, with a whopping 400 performances taking place at last year’s annual event. Quite uniquely, the festival is also the chance for everyone to have a go at making music, with last year’s event hosting 30 free workshops, from world drumming, the four elements of hip hop and a kids’ Glee concert to young jazz and a guitar master class with the renowned Jon Gomm. Last year’s programme for all ages and abilities was such a hit, in fact, it attracted almost 800 people over the weekend, with one mum describing the sheer amount on offer as “staggering”. The festival is also about supporting good causes, with the 2012 event raising £6,000 for the city’s New Hope children’s respite centre, taking the total amount raised for local charity over five years to nearly £25,000.

This year’s explosion of live music in city’s pubs, clubs, cafes and historic buildings, as well as on outdoor stages, takes place from Friday, August 30 to Sunday, September 1.

The Worcestershire-based English Symphony Orchestra has announced a new concert series in Malvern for 2013. It will be held at Christchurch, which is opposite Great Malvern Station. The concerts are on March 22nd, May 23rd, September 27th and November 22nd and the series is directed by the American conductor Kenneth Woods. “This is the first time that Ken has worked with the orchestra and the preparation has gone really well so far”, says orchestra manager Peter Sheeran. “He has chosen an interesting programme of music, from 18th Century English to the present time, with some excellent soloists. We are hoping to use Christchurch as a base for many activities locally and have been made to feel very welcome by the wardens. This collaboration marks the start of a new era for the orchestra”. It’s coming... This July (19th-27th) will see the UK’s first ever international festival for youth and children’s choirs WIFYS (the Worcester International Festival for Young Singers).
GREAT MALVERN HOSTS FIRST CONTEMPORARY ARTS FESTIVAL A brand new Festival will bring the very latest in modern drama, music, dance, comedy and film to the town of Great Malvern in rural Worcestershire and aims to attract a wider theatre audience from the West Midlands and beyond. Performances will include ‘Ockham’s Razor’ acrobatics and daring aerial theatre, as well as video streaming of live HD broadcasts of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ ballet from the Royal Opera House and ‘The Rite of Spring’ from the Bolshoi in Moscow.
Singers from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Austria, Poland, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Russia and Hong Kong will join young people in Worcestershire for this week-long vibrant arts event. Workshops, concerts, colourful street singing and a final night Gala Concert in Worcester Cathedral will provide an exciting and ground-breaking festival enhancing Worcester as a tourist destination.
Other performances feature stand-up comedian Andy Parsons and the National Dance Company Wales performing ‘Dream’; a triple bill of exhilarating dance brought together by world-renowned choreographer Christopher Bruce.
With most performances free of charge, and in a range of venues in the city and surrounding towns, WIFYS offers a highly accessible programme of events. Audiences will be wowed by the rich cultural diversity of the visiting choirs. The Festival will provide a sparkling, energy-boosting event for audiences and participants alike!

EMBRACE LITERATURE! Lovers of the spoken and written word in all its forms will find a warm welcome in Worcestershire in June! The third Worcestershire Literary Festival (WLF for short) is putting on events for all ages at venues across the county from 13th-24th June 2013. Poet Pam Ayres will be appearing in both Worcester and Tenbury Wells, and the varied programme includes the final of the annual Worcestershire Poet Laureate competition, tours of Worcester Cathedral’s historic library, an authors’ fair, events in the park, writers talks and workshops and a Midsummer walk on the Malvern Hills. Run entirely by volunteers on a not-for-profit basis, the WLF recently launched a ‘Friends of Lit Fest’ Scheme and a successful Flash Fiction competition. Events and fundraising projects take place throughout the year. MOTORSPORT IN A HISTORIC LOCATION If you love motorsport you have probably already heard of Shelsley Walsh. This racetrack has been in existence since 1905 and is the oldest motorsport track in the world still used today. The Midland Automobile Club can now confirm their calendar for events at the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb near Worcester. The calendar features six speed hill climb weekends, two of which are rounds of the Avon Tyres MSA British Hill Climb Championship held in June and August. Throughout the year Shelsley Walsh are celebrating a number of notable anniversaries starting with 100 years of Morris at ‘Speed Into Spring’ in May.

With races every couple of minutes between 8am and 6pm, Bewdley Rowing Club frequently has around 250 crews each day. A crew could be a single sculler, double scullers, pairs, fours, quads or eights and competitor’s ages start at 12 or 13 and finish somewhere in the 70s.
Competition is stiff, no matter what the event. Whether you’re interested in rowing, or just fancy a good day out, Bewdley is the place to be on the last weekend of July. When you hear the name King John you perhaps associate it with Robin Hood, or what you learned about ‘bad King John’ at school. It may surprise you to learn that not only was King John a frequent visitor to Worcestershire but he also loved the county. So John can’t have been all bad! Worcestershire’s connections to this monarch and his signing of Magna Carta - probably the most well known law in English history - will mean that many people will be visiting the county in the next few years as part of national celebrations. Worcester Cathedral is planning a series of special events in both 2015 and 2016 to celebrate the signing of Magna Carta, and to commemorate the 800th Anniversary of the burial of King John in Worcester Cathedral. These will include new guided tours,

talks, a conference led by historians, and possibly a performance of William Shakespeare’s play King John. Another great reason for visiting Worcester Cathedral is to visit the Library, it is one of England’s oldest libraries (appointments necessary) with the collection comprising of 298 medieval manuscripts, which range mainly from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries. There is also a music collection, which contains works by many famous composers including Sir Edward Elgar and Thomas Tomkins. The move makes Evesham the first town in the UK to use ‘Augmented Reality’ to enhance the visitor experience, promote local history and boost footfall. The technology allows anyone with a Smartphone or Tablet to hold up the device to any of 10 historic landmarks in Evesham, prompting a mediaeval monk to pop up onto the screen to talk through the history of the attraction. The fictional monk - Brother Oswald, a popular character used by Evesham’s Almonry Museum - acts as a virtual tour guide, explaining the town’s past and promoting current points of interest. Tourism trail cards listing the attractions are available for free at the Almonry, which is the starting point of the route. The landmarks include historic buildings, statues and existing tourism signs in the town centre and Abbey Park. The tour will appeal to everyone, whether you are tech-savvy and want to try out the latest technology or genuinely interested in the heritage of the town as there is plenty to explore.

Launched on October 1, the Share the Passion campaign aims to raise £3 million to fund vital investment in the popular Midlands visitor attraction.

Money raised so far will allow Severn Valley Railway to start planning for projects including the Heritage Engineering and Building Training Academy, whose apprentices will be involved in the restoration of the railway’s flagship locomotive 4930 Hagley Hall. The loco, which celebrates its 40th anniversary at SVR in 2013, has not been operational for more than 23 years. The £1 million will be put to good use but there are many more valuable projects to undertake with additional funds, such as the innovative SteamWorks project at Bridgnorth station and the restoration of the Great Western Railway ‘chocolate and cream’ carriages to run with Hagley Hall, providing a truly authentic experience for our passengers. THE STORY OF WORCESTER PORCELAIN TO BE TOLD THE HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND HAS GIVEN INITIAL SUPPORT TO THE MUSEUM OF ROYAL WORCESTER FOR A £1,095,700 REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT TO IMPROVE AND REFURBISH THE MUSEUM. The project will ‘Celebrate 250 years of Innovation, Industry and Craftsmanship’ and will champion the role that Royal Worcester and its highly skilled workforce played in the world of ceramics. The Museum is adjacent to the old Royal Worcester Factory in Severn Street and just two minutes walk from Worcester Cathedral. From the very start of production in the 1750’s visitors were encouraged to take a factory tour and marvel at the manufacturing processes and factory skills required in this labour intensive industry. This investment from Heritage Lottery Fund means the Museum can re introduce the story of manufacture through the introduction of new displays and feature the worker’s emotive audio recordings and memories of their time at Royal Worcester. The Museum will open a hidden treasuretrove of film, archives and collections, develop vibrant educational services and involve volunteers and people who worked at the factory to create the truest representation of an industry that touched the lives of nearly everyone who lived in the City of Worcester. www.worcesterporcelainmuseum.org.uk

Worcester CAMRA Beer, Cider & Perry Festival 8th-10th August 2013 The biggest beer, cider and perry festival in the Heart of England this summer, which also includes live music on Thursday and Friday evenings and all day on Saturday. n 2013, you can be part of the Ashes 2013 tour. Watch Australia play the Worcestershire Royals on a four day test from the 2nd July at New Road.
To add to the list of top sporting venues, a brand new £15m sports arena in Worcester will open in March 2013. The 2,000-seater venue on the site of a former fruit and vegetable market in Hylton Road, is being developed by the University of Worcester. The facility will be a national centre of excellence for disabled sport and will also be Worcester Wolves basketball club’s new home. The arena will include three basketball courts, treatment and first aid rooms, meeting spaces, a cafeteria, and a hospitality suite. Worcester Racecourse is just a stone’s throw away from the historic city centre and offers a mixture of National Hunt Race Days and themed events throughout the racing calendar from April to September. (See page 19 for a list of fixtures). Sixways Stadium hosts premiership rugby with Worcester Warriors playing a mixture of cup and league matches throughout the autumn and winter months and during spring and summer the club hosts a number of non-rugby events.

The circular path also allows you to venture off onto other trails including the Northwick Manor Heritage Trail and The Severn Way. ARTS & CULTURE Worcester’s latest edition to the arts and culture tourism offer is The Hive. Officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in July 2012 it has, to date, already received 553,631 visitors. This joint library venture with Worcestershire County Council and the University of Worcester is the first of its kind in Europe and this Partnership has been awarded by winning the international Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Building Performance Award for the New Project Build of the Year (with the value above £5 million). It was recognised for its iconic architecture, use of renewable technologies to create a sustainable building whilst delivering high level comfort & performance for visitors.

You can also learn about the historic city of Worcester and also with thanks to a generous loan by Lea and Perrins, visitors can see some of the company’s finest historic items including the extremely rare lignite jug first used to mix the world famous sauce.
Worcester Live is a registered charity, which runs Huntingdon Hall and The Swan Theatre. The organisation is the main arts provider in the city and also runs annual outdoor Shakespeare at the Commandery, Shakespeare at the Cathedral, the Worcester Festival and also hosts the Ghost Walks of Worcester. Huntingdon Hall is Worcester’s premier live music and entertainment venue and is a leading venue for folk music but is becoming increasingly well known for great comedy and welcomes all types of entertainment; classical music, jazz and blues as well as spoken word events. The Swan Theatre offers a full programme of entertainment; professional theatre, dance, amateur theatre, live music, spoken word events and comedy.
Worcester Arts Workshop is a hub for creativity whether you want to learn a new skill or brush up on an old pastime including pottery, drawing, photography and oil painting. Worcester Arts Workshop Splendid Cinema hosts alternative films and blockbuster repeats and the venue also hosts live music events. The venue is a great place to relax and listen to live music on a ‘Lazy Sunday Afternoon’, these
HISTORY & HERITAGE Worcester is renowned for being a historical city and is still referred to as ‘The Faithful City’ after the city was the last to fall in the English Civil War in 1651. Historical re-enactments take place every year to mark the significance of the Civil War and you should not be surprised to see Cavaliers and Roundheads marching to battle at certain times of the year. You can go on a Battle of Worcester Walking Trail around the city and visit The Commandery. The Commandery was used by the Royalists as their headquarters during the Civil War and now you can enjoy a tour of the Grade I listed building taking in the sights and sounds of combat on an audio tour. Worcester Cathedral rises up above the River Severn with magnificent views across to the Malvern Hills from the tower which is open at scheduled times of the year. Worcester Cathedral is also home to the royal tombs of King John and Prince Arthur, Elgar’s Window,
events are held once a month throughout the summer. Home to the Three Choirs Festival, the world’s oldest music festival is held in the city once every three years. The next Festival is in 2014 but with the city of Worcester being a great destination for arts and cultural events you do not have to wait until then to experience some fantastic music festivals. The latest edition is the Worcester International Festival for Young Singers, being held in July (see page 12). The 6th Worcester Music Festival takes over the city’s pubs, clubs, cafes, historic buildings and outdoor stages from 30th August to 1st September and is a great free festival where you can enjoy a choice of music from rock, folk, classical, punk, acoustic plus so much more! (see page 11). The Worcester Festival 2013 runs from 10th to 21st August, and is three weekends of activities, events and fun for everyone. Based around the city centre and beyond, there’s arts, crafts, live music, theatre, dance, exhibitions and community events for all tastes.

And tucked away a little bit further past The Greyfriars is the Tudor House Heritage Centre. This 16th century timber framed building brings a vanished Worcester back to life. Located near the Lygon Arms hotel, the museum celebrates the work of renowned 20th century designer Sir Gordon Russell who maintained a working furniture production factory there before moving to Worcester in 2003. The link was developed because Marianske Lazne, like Malvern, has a rich spa heritage and is world famous for its spring water. Marianske Lazne is situated close to Graffenberg, where Vincent Priessnitz pioneered hydrotherapy treatments in the 1820s and it’s said his example inspired Dr James Wilson to start the Malvern cure. A delegation which included Mayor Dzenek Kral visited Malvern in October to sign the agreement with the mayor of Malvern, Councillor Ian Hopwood. The towns are developing strong links for cultural, tourism and business exchange.
Malvern is home of the world famous Morgan Motor Company - so why not arrange a tour of the Morgan factory or visit the Morgan visitor centre. Badly damaged in a fire in the 1930s, you can now take a tour of the wonderfully landscaped gardens and building ruins. Upton upon Severn has plenty to explore including the Tudor House Museum and the Upton Heritage Centre. Croome Court and Park just outside Upton is also a must-see with pretty walks through 18th century gardens.
SUMMER EVENTS The summer provides visitors to the Malverns with some of the most stunning scenery to be found anywhere in the country. Each of the towns has an array of events and activities taking place. From the most famous events like Malvern Spring Garden Show, Malvern Walking Festival, Tenbury Countryside Show, Upton International Jazz Festival to unique local activities such as the Well Dressing in Malvern. 2013 see’s the 125th anniversary of the death of opera singer Jenny Lind. Known as the Swedish Nightingale, she performed in opera houses all over the world and acquired working friendships with both Mendelssohn and Chopin. She lived her final years until her death at the age of 67 at Wynds Point, near British Camp on the Malvern Hills. There will be events highlighting her life during Civic Week (13-20 July). There will also be concerts of the music of Chopin taking place during the Malvern Festival, in October. The Malverns are overflowing with arts and culture… with something for everyone! Heading east to the countryside between Bromsgrove and Redditch, the Worcester and Birmingham Canal is another popular attraction and offers excursions from Tardebigge which is well known for its flight of 30 locks, one of the longest in Europe. edditch’s neighbouring market town of Bromsgrove was previously a world centre for the nail-making trade. A key family attraction today is Avoncroft Museum of historic buildings. Established in 1962, Avoncroft was England’s first open air museum and is now home to 25 historic structures - ranging from a medieval merchant’s house to a windmill and a post-World War Two prefab - all of which have been rescued and rebuilt on its 19 acre site. The museum runs special events throughout the year including historical re-enactments, medieval jousting, and blacksmithing skills, demonstrated at the museum’s forge. Traditional crafts including glass blowing, pottery and stained glass production, can also be viewed a few miles down the road at Hanbury’s Jinney Ring, a base for 12 craft workshops set in landscaped gardens with duck ponds and sweeping views across to the Malvern Hills.
Rare wall-paintings are also on display at Harvington Hall, but the Elizabethan moated manor house is best known for containing the best series of secret hiding places in the country. Dating from the late 16th century, the hides were used to shelter Catholic priests at a time when it was high treason for them to practise in England. Home to the Bishops of Worcester for more than 1,000 years, Hartlebury Castle is another historic property with strong religious links.
Nearby Hanbury Hall - or Lower Loxley for those who follow The Archers - is a William and Marystyle country house, garden and park which dates from 1701 and is now run by the National Trust. There’s a mix of grand interior styles to discover and magnificent staircase wall-paintings.
The north wing of the castle now houses the Worcestershire Museum which explores the county’s past and includes a nationally-important collection of colourful gypsy caravans. Further four-wheeled collections can be found at the Transport Museum in Wythall where visitors can see one of the country’s most extensive ranges of buses and battery electric vehicles as well as a miniature steam railway.

The museum is open from Good Friday to the end of October and includes a number of special events which include classic bus rides. Wherever you go in North Worcestershire, a brush with history is never far away - even for those enjoying outdoor attractions such as the ancient Wyre Forest, near Bewdley, which features a Go Ape high wire adventure, Bodenham Arboretum or Arley Arboretum, which dates back to the first half of the nineteenth century and is considered to be one of the country’s finest tree collections.
