COOL MEETS CULTURE
BY BRENDAN McCLEMENTS, CEO VISIT VICTORIA

FILL YOUR WINTER DAYS WITH ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS IN MELBOURNE AND VICTORIA. AFTER HOURS, THE NIGHTS COME TO LIFE WITH EVEN MORE TO DO.
Visit a local landmark, explore a shopping precinct, or join a walk or experience that introduces you to the Indigenous culture and history of the region. During a night out, enjoy a glass of local pinot in a hidden bar or try one of the city’s new eateries.

Wominjeka! That’s how we say welcome in the local Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung language here in Narrm (Melbourne).
Winter has arrived, so it’s time to turn up the heat. The weather might be chilly but there’s lots to keep you busy. Melbourne’s calendar is packed with sport, and the big ticket this season is the British & Irish Lions rugby tour. The Lions will play two games in Melbourne in July: the first against the First Nations & Pasifika XV and the next against the Wallabies.
For those who prefer to stay inside, NGV International is hosting Melbourne Winter Masterpieces: French Impressionism, with more than a hundred works by legendary artists including Degas, Renoir and Monet.
RISING returns with its packed program of innovative art, theatre and performance. As well as ticketed events, there’s also free fun to be had, including Blockbuster, a festival of Punjabi art and food and Pakistani music in Fed Square, and the SpaceOut Competition.
Otherwise, visit a local landmark, explore a shopping precinct, or join a walk or experience that introduces you to Indigenous culture and history. During a night out, enjoy a glass of local pinot in a hidden bar or try one of the city’s new eateries.
Regional Victoria shines a light on the best of the season. The skies are often clear, making it perfect for hiking, cycling or heading to the ski fields. Find an open fire in a country pub and relax over a hearty meal and a local craft beer. Immerse yourself in hot springs to warm the soul. Plus, it’s whale season, so head to the coast and join a tour to spot these giant marine mammals.
Wherever you travel in Victoria this winter, you’re sure to discover the season’s finest.

MELBOURNE MOOD
WELCOME BACK
FOR THE COVER OF THIS ISSUE, CHLOE BLYTHMAN TURNED HER LOVE OF DRAWING COLOURFUL, VIBRANT MAPS TO OUR CITY STREETS.
For many years, Chloe Blythman kept her love of drawing a secret. In 2017, boredom had led her to starting an Instagram account called Clumsy Hands, where she displayed her work but kept her real name from her followers.
“When I moved to London, the studio I was working for noticed I had a knack
for illustration, so encouraged me to bring it to project work,” says Chloe. While living overseas and feeling homesick, Chloe began channelling more Melbourne influences into her work. “When I moved home in 2022, I wanted to turn it into a business, so I did a creative residency with Frankie Ratford [of Designer’s Bootcamp] who helped turn my dreams into a reality.”

MAPPED OUT
Chloe’s Clumsy Hands work revolves around vibrant, cartoon-like maps, many of which depict favourite Melbourne suburbs.
“I tend to draw places I have fond memories of versus just drawing every single town I possibly can,” she says. “I started drawing maps to capture special memories of cities I have explored or lived in.”
As for her own heart, it lies in the northern suburbs of Thornbury and Northcote: “They were my stomping grounds when I moved back home, and they inspired the first Melbourne Clumsy Maps.”
WINTER WONDERS
For Chloe, winter is about taking a step back. “I always try to be as cosy as possible in winter and slow down,” she says. “Like curling up in a cafe for the afternoon drawing – I love Tin Pot Cafe in Fitzroy North – visiting galleries like NGV or ACMI, grabbing a drink in bars with romantic lighting, eating way too much pasta at Waiters Restaurant, bumbling around the farmers market at Abbotsford Convent, going to pub trivia at the Royston or, my favourite, escaping the city to the Yarra Valley wineries then curling up in a cottage hidden in the forest with a bottle of shiraz.” + clumsyhands.com

KEEN TO WATCH A SHOW STRAIGHT OFF BROADWAY OR SEEKING OUT A THOUGHT-PROVOKING EXHIBITION? WINTER IN MELBOURNE HAS YOU COVERED WITH THESE HOT ART AND CULTURE EVENTS.
MUSICAL MOMENTS
Eddie Perfect won a Tony Award for the music and lyrics he wrote for Beetlejuice The Musical. Now, he’s bringing the magic of the lead character to the stage. Based on Tim Burton’s much-loved film, it tells the story of Lydia Deetz, an unusual teenager whose life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple
and a demon with a thing for stripes. ♦ Another joyous new musical on its way to the Comedy Theatre is Here You Come Again (12–20 July). With songs by Dolly Parton, it follows a diehard fan whose fantasy version of the iconic singer helps him navigate life and love. + beetlejuicethemusical.com.au + marrinergroup.com.au
FOR THE FANS
More than eight million bricks have been used for Melbourne Museum’s new blockbuster, LEGO Star Wars: The Exhibition. Be among the first in the galaxy to see the incredible creations and make your own mark by helping to build landscapes. ♦ It’s a fandom of a different kind lining up for Harry Potter: The Exhibition. This interactive celebration of the films includes props and costumes, as well as characters, locations and beasts from the Harry Potter universe. Practice casting spells, brewing potions and playing Quidditch to collect points and earn medals for your Hogwarts house.

From the free music, art and laser shows in alleyways at Night Trade to a Shakespearean mash-up of Hamlet performed by a neurodiverse cast, this is a festival that makes you think as well as have fun. ♦ For more than 70 years, the Melbourne International Film Festival – known by all as MIFF (7–24 August) – brings adventurous storytelling to screens across the city. Find some respite from the chilly outdoors and settle in for a drink or a meal in Melbourne’s enchanting laneways. When the mist gathers on a wintry day, romance is in the air in the city’s hidden, intimate dining haunts. It’s easy to while away the afternoon people-watching from the perfect window table.

HOME BELOW THE DOME
IT’S ONE OF THE MOSTLOVED SPACES AT STATE LIBRARY VICTORIA, BUT FEW VISITORS KNOW ABOUT ITS RESIDENTIAL HISTORY.

FAMILY MEMORIES
Imagine someone asking you where you lived and your answer was State Library Victoria. This was the reality for the Library’s last residential supervisor and his family in 1968. Living in the Library was a world of fun for the supervisor’s six children, who even had access to a secret staff-only table tennis room.

CENTRE OF READING
The apartment was above what is now known as the La Trobe Reading Room, topped by the magnificent dome. Opened in 1913, the vaulted octagonal reading room is six storeys high and can house 32,000 books and 320 readers at its desks. The reading room is home to the World of the Book exhibition in the Dome Galleries, Australia’s most popular and longest running book exhibition, now in its 20th year.

GREAT GALLERIES
At Fed Square, you’ll find some of Australia’s most impressive museums and galleries. See the finest artworks ever produced in this country at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. One of the major exhibitions showing now is Martin Grant, a survey of the work of the Australian-born, Paris-based fashion designer. At the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), there are plenty of free exhibitions covering movies, television and screen technology.
EVEN DURING WINTER, THERE’S PLENTY TO SEE AND DO AT FED SQUARE, THE GATEWAY TO MELBOURNE’S ARTS PRECINCT.

INDIGENOUS CULTURE
Fed Square stands on what was once a very important meeting ground for Victoria’s First Peoples and still holds great cultural significance. The Koorie Heritage Trust (KHT) is a cultural centre that celebrates and supports the living cultures of Aboriginal peoples from south-eastern Australia, offering programs and services that empower communities and educate the wider public. Check out the exhibitions at KHT, go on a guided walk or explore shopKHT.
NATURE TRANSFORMS
Now open at Fed Square is the Test Garden. A window into Laak Boorndap, the new 18,000 square metre urban garden being built in the Melbourne Arts Precinct. Showcasing more than 70 selected plant species, the Test Garden displays a selection of plants that are known to survive in hot, dry conditions and require minimal intervention and irrigation. A variety of public programs, workshops and events take place throughout the year. It is open, day and night, at Fed Square’s Skyline Car Park, overlooking Birrarung Marr. + fedsquare.com

EAST ASIAN EATS
Melburnians were happy to see chef Michael Lambie back with a new venue Juni Melbourne is a fun spot, with the menu taking a tour of Asia. Tuck into house-made crayfish dumplings and fresh burrata with chilli oil and Chinese donuts. ♦ Then there’s Nori Maki, an omakase restaurant doing it a little differently to most. Unsurprisingly, the highlight is norimaki (hand rolls). A four-roll set, prepared by a former Nobu chef, starts at a budget-friendly $34. But there are only 24 seats, so be sure to book. + junimelbourne.com.au

CASUAL CHARM
Anyone who’s spent time in Hong Kong will have come across eateries like Peninsula HK Cafe. At this Chinatown newcomer, order milk tea alongside pineapple buns and chunky French toast with curried beef brisket. ♦ Near Queen Vic Market, seek out The Cevapi Project for Balkan street food. Ćevapis (grilled beef mince sausages) are served in wood-fired bread pockets with traditional condiments like ajvar (capsicum and eggplant relish) and kajmak (creamy, unripened cheese).

SOUTHBANK SPICE
At Southgate, Hacienda Melbourne is all about delivering the authentic tastes of Mexico. On the menu, discover crab tostadas and lechon (pork) with peanut mole, plus tequila and mezcal cocktails. ♦ Fans of Mischa Tropp’s Toddy Shop in Collingwood will be amazed by the size of Kolkata Cricket Club. The sprawling venue in the Crown precinct has both a dining room, serving pan-Indian dishes like kosha mangsho (Bengali goat curry) and mach posto (whole tandoori barramundi), and a more casual bar.

VIEW FROM ABOVE

EVEN WHEN THE WEATHER TURNS COOL, MELBOURNE LOVES A ROOFTOP EXPERIENCE. HERE'S WHERE TO SIP AND DINE WITH A VIEW, ANY TIME OF YEAR.
SLIGHTLY SWANK
Looking to impress? Head up to Fleet Rooftop Bar on the 22nd level of Vibe Hotel Melbourne, overlooking the Yarra River. The food and seasonal cocktails are as impressive as the views. Alternatively, at the 80 Collins precinct head upstairs to the rooftop at Farmer’s Daughters. Designed to resemble a greenhouse, this eatery serves top-notch drinks and dishes featuring ingredients from regional Victoria. Not far away is sleek Mid Air, on the 12th floor of hotel Hyde Melbourne Place. There’s a Mediterranean menu and excellent selection of signature cocktails and wines by the glass. It also has a retractable roof and fireplace.
CASUAL CONNECTIONS
There are gorgeous views from the rooftop at State of Grace. Snuggle up beneath a heater to enjoy a tipple accompanied by share plates, pizza and boards of cheese and charcuterie. For another tucked-away treat, duck into Heffernan Lane in Chinatown to find the intimate rooftop at Union Electric. It’s protected by a neighbouring building, and the drinks list offers a fresh take on classic tiki cocktails. Over on Swanston Street, high above the pedestrians, find Rooftop Bar. It’s been attracting a huge crowd ever since 2006. On a sunny day, take advantage of the noon opening for great drinks, tasty burgers and good music.

SKY-HIGH STUNNERS
Santana Rooftop is the low-lit cigar bar of our dreams. With the glittering windows of skyscrapers all around and South American-influenced cocktails, it’s the perfect spot to spend a clear evening. The terrace wrapping around the 14th floor of Pullman Melbourne City Centre is home to Blossom Rooftop Bar, a great place to order cocktails and woodfired pizza at sunset. For a more Spanish-themed menu, walk up Lonsdale Street and take the lift to Bomba Rooftop. Excellent tapas and Spanish-influenced cocktails, with views of Chinatown, make this a great date spot.

FRENCH FLAIR
WORKS BY SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ARTISTS HAVE ARRIVED IN THE CITY FOR THIS YEAR’S MELBOURNE WINTER MASTERPIECES® EXHIBITION, FRENCH IMPRESSIONISM.

ARTISTIC REVOLUTION
In the late nineteenth century, an art movement challenged the norms. Its artists stepped outside the rigid establishment and showed their works – painted en plein air with a lightened palette and quick brushstrokes – in independent exhibitions. Now, French Impressionism (from 6 June) at NGV International brings more than one hundred works of art to the public in an international exclusive. Pieces by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot and many more have come direct from Boston’s
Museum of Fine Arts, renowned for its rich holdings of Impressionist paintings, for this exhibition with its immersive design.
POWER OF TEN
Arranged into 10 thematic sections, the exhibition begins with Monet’s Woodgatherers at the edge of the forest (c 1863) nearby works by members of the Barbizon School, as well as the marine painter Eugène Boudin, who influenced him. In the final exhibition gallery, 16 of Monet’s canvases depicting his most beloved natural scenes in Argenteuil, the
Normandy and Mediterranean coasts and his garden in Giverny demonstrate his breathtaking skill and contribution to the Impressionist movement. The exhibition also features two pieces that were displayed in the first exhibition organised by this group of artists in 1874: Renoir’s Mixed flowers in an earthenware pot and Degas’s At the races in the countryside.
FRENCH FANCIES
There are not only artworks on display. The artists’ words and thoughts, as recorded in letters,

journals and articles, reveal the mutual admiration and personal connections that united the practitioners at the centre of this movement. Plus, three works from the NGV Collection will also feature, allowing guests to see them in context for the first time. For guests who want to experience French Impressionism a little differently, see the exhibition at NGV Friday Nights, with after-hours access as well as music, drinks and food. Become a member of NGV and you can also enjoy previews and curator talks. + ngv.melbourne

THE PERFECT SCORE

HE’S THE CONSUMMATE MULTI-HYPHENATE AND NOW EDDIE PERFECT IS BACK ON THE MELBOURNE STAGE, STARRING IN THE MUSICAL HE ALSO COMPOSED.
SAY IT THREE TIMES
Probably best known for his role as Mick Holland on popular television series Offspring, Eddie Perfect has many more skills than simply acting in his armoury. He’s a comedian, accomplished pianist and a songwriter. He wrote a musical about
Shane Warne then moved to New York to pursue a career on Broadway, which culminated in writing the songs for two musicals. The first was King Kong and the other was Beetlejuice the Musical, which sees him back in Melbourne, playing the title role at the Regent Theatre.
Eddie Perfect
Benny Capp
LOCAL LEGEND
In fact, it was far from New York where Eddie worked on Beetlejuice “The score was mostly written in my studio out the back of my house in Brunswick,” he says. “It’s directly informed by the cross-genre musical journey I’ve had. I’ve played music at countless bars, clubs, cafes, halls, festivals, barns, markets and street corners. Everything from jazz to classical, pop to traditional South African music, Latin, dub, funk, gospel, a cappella and heavy metal. This city has been my cultural teacher – a place that shaped my tastes and taught me to listen and collaborate.” It certainly paid off. Eddie (and Beetlejuice) was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Original Score in 2019.
THE CITY REVEALED
Like most Melbourne locals, Eddie knows the city’s best attribute can also make it tricky for visitors. “For those new to the city, Melbourne can sometimes feel a little secretive, like we’re hiding all the good stuff,” he says. “But it’s a very welcoming place once you find the right door. If you’re after food, coffee or a knockout pastry, it’s fun to perambulate down a lively street. Brunswick and Johnston streets in Fitzroy, Smith and Gertrude streets in Collingwood, and Chapel and Greville streets in Prahran all have a flavour of their own.”

You’ll probably spend most of the day at the zoo, but afterwards head into the city. You’ll all likely be hungry, so treat them to a visit to Tetsujin, a sushi train restaurant in Emporium Melbourne. SILENT AFTERSHOCKS

NOLAN’S TESTAMENT
Like many, Australian artist Sidney Nolan was haunted by what happened in Nazi concentration camps. In four weeks, at the age of just 22, he painted 220 works in a “rambling, tumbling turmoil” of which he barely ever spoke. In fact, it wasn’t until the 2010s that a researcher came across the works. Now, Aftershocks: Nolan and the Holocaust (until 29 June) is on show at the Melbourne Holocaust Museum – some of the works for the first time in public.
AFTERSHOCKS
This moving exhibition brings together 56 of Nolan’s Holocaust paintings, created after his 1961 visit to Auschwitz. On display are works capturing the trauma of Auschwitz, abstract depictions of Nazi official Adolf Eichmann and – for the first time – four paintings portraying the Ravensbrück women’s camp. While Nolan is best known for his Ned Kelly series, these works reveal a more personal and confronting artistic response, offering insight into his reckoning with suffering, persecution and faith. Visitors are advised that the content may be confronting.
SEE THE LANDMARK WORKS OF SIDNEY NOLAN, AS WELL AS OTHER EXHIBITIONS, AT MELBOURNE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM.

A PLACE OF REMEMBRANCE
The Melbourne Holocaust Museum was founded by survivors who resettled in Melbourne, and its permanent exhibitions remain central to its mission. Collections of eyewitness testimonies, original artefacts and historical records ensure the memory of the Holocaust endures. + mhm.org.au

Ballarat’s Best Pie competition
Chris McConville
THERE’S PLENTY TO EXPLORE AND ENJOY, FROM FAMILY-FRIENDLY FESTIVALS TO TRUFFLE HUNTS, WHEN YOU SPEND A FEW DAYS IN BALLARAT THIS SEASON.
JOIN THE FESTIVITIES
The Ballarat Winter Festival (5–27 July) takes over the city of Ballarat with fun for all. One of the big drawcards is Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill, which will transform the goldrush-era streetscapes into a dazzling display of projections, sound and light shows, theatrical performances and even falling faux snow for an incredible Christmas in July experience. There’ll be skating on the pop-up ice rink opposite the Ballarat Town Hall, the Knights of Fire medieval spectacular at Kryal Castle and, new this year, the Hot Chocolate Trail, with special creations to warm winter bellies.
SLICE OF THE ACTION
Ballarat’s Best Pie (1–31 August) is back for another year, with more than 35 new pies vying for the title of the greatest thing wrapped in pastry. Find sweet and savoury options in pubs, restaurants, cafes and bakeries right across the city. There’s a new category this year –Brilliantly Unexpected Pie – which will encourage chefs and bakers to get creative with unexpected flavour combinations and unusual pie constructions. Expect a limoncello meringue pie, a chicken enchilada pie, the El Quacko (a taco-inspired pie with beef marinated in Red Duck amber ale) and much more. Try them out when you’re visiting and cast a vote in the People’s Choice Pie award.
COOL EXPERIENCES
There’s no better time of year than this to learn about warming beverages, and the Itinerant Spirits Whiskey Experience gives guests an insight into the origins of the raw ingredients and the methods used to distil the spirits. Wine lovers have many options too. A favourite is Saturday nights at Wayward Winery, where the chefs curate an à la carte menu of local produce and ingredients from the kitchen garden, with an emphasis on cooking over fire. Then for a brisk change, pivot from best spirits and wine to top-notch truffles. Get outside and dig under the oak trees at Black Cat Truffles. You can team a winter truffle hunt with a weekend brunch or long lunch.

It’s important to regularly apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing (shirt, hat and sunglasses) when spending time outdoors, at any time of year.

CATERING TO ALL TASTES

The beauty of travelling in 2025 means there’s a selection of quality foods available at Melbourne Airport. So no matter your tastes or dietary needs, every terminal features a range of delicious meals to suit.

ROLL’D T4
While not a typical dietary requirement, many people choose to eat as additive-free as possible. If that’s you, you’ll be pleased to hear that Liv Eat cuts unnecessary steps from their processes and avoids flavour enhancers, choosing to get their ingredients straight from the source.

COFFEE LANE T2
M eat-free options can come with the notion that they won’t be filling –a myth that Coffee Lane well and truly busts. Its vibrant salads and sandwiches are filled to the brim with hearty ingredients. Taking its inspiration from Middle Eastern flavours, many of these ingredients are excellent protein alternatives to meat.
S oul Origin offers a range of milk alternatives (ideal if your diet is lactose-free), gluten-free options and soy-free meals. And if you or someone travelling with you has a nut allergy, fear not – there are also options without tree nuts, too.

EARL CANTEEN T3
The vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian options are in high supply at EARL with plant-based salads and fish fingers both tempting options. Gluten-free? You’ll be well catered for with the GF Classic Chicken Bread. EARL also knows that many travellers are interested in Halal-friendly food, so you’ll find this on their menu too.
At Roll’d, you’ll find both vegan and vegetarian meals, as expected. But the pescatarian section of their menu is a win if you love seafood but want to ensure it’s the only animal product in the dish. And if you have a low gluten tolerance, they have a range of ‘low gluten’ options too.

GRILL’D T2
D iners who eat meat-free meals can get a near-meat experience with the impossible burger at Grill’d. The juicy patty has the same texture and flavours of a traditional beef one, minus the meat. There are also vegan options featuring cheese and mayo taste-a-likes. And, you can enjoy it all on a gluten-free bun!
