BLUEGRASS

BLUEGRASS MUSIC HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM In the heart of the Bluegrass Music Capital of the World is an absolute treasure that brings in visitors from all over the country to experience the historic, eclectic, and enormous cultural center for all things Bluegrass. You will gasp as you step inside this state-ofthe-art, riverside venue, and your face will light up when you pluck the banjo strings at the interactive “Pickin’ Parlor.” But what really makes the Bluegrass Museum so special across the globe is the live music. Inside the museum’s Woodward Theatre or outside at the amphitheater, you can catch live shows all year round from some of the greatest musicians in the business. This is a place where you can truly appreciate the sounds and songs that make this genre of music so special, with amazing acoustics and a smaller layout than most concert venues, so you can get up close and personal with these musicians. There’s not a bad seat in the house, and you still have plenty of room to get up and boogie—the perfect balance for a great show.

BLUEGRASS

ROMPFEST: BLUEGRASS ROOTS & BRANCHES FESTIVAL “There’s just no other place like it,” is a phrase we hear from ROMP-goers year after year. This is where Bluegrass music meets the beauty of nature, and this four-day music festival brings more than enough of both. Held on 152 acres of land at Yellow Creek Park – one of the most breathtaking parks in Kentucky, visitors from all over the world (and all 50 states) travel annually to Owensboro to experience the magical, eclectic, music-centric experience that is ROMP. With past headliners that include Billy Strings, Alison Krauss, Steve Martin, John Prine, and other great stars of the stage, you won’t find a better lineup of Bluegrass music legends anywhere else. Enjoy the sunshine and warmth that comes with the month of June, along with lightadorned pathways, late-night jam sessions, and some of the greenest nature trails you’ve ever walked. ROMP’s laid-back atmosphere is welcoming to everyone—a place where you can kick off your shoes and dance barefoot under the stars, no matter your age.

Live Music

In our city, live music is everything. With more and more music venues popping up across the city and county, Owensboro is quickly becoming one of the best places in the state to catch a show. Owensboro is the Bluegrass Music Capital of the World and your go-to destination for live Bluegrass music. At the world-renown Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum, you can catch shows from some of the world’s best musicians in the state-of-the-art Woodward Theatre. Whether it’s one of the legendary headliners that put Bluegrass music on the map, or one of the “Newgrass” bands you keep hearing so much about, this is one of the only museums in the state that offers live music all year round. With or without live music, Owensboro’s downtown riverfront is breathtakingly beautiful. But during the spring and summer months, our 16-week outdoor music festival is one of the hottest hot spots in the state of Kentucky. At Friday After 5, you’ll find bands that cover everything from rock and country to funk and gospel. As you walk along the edge of the Ohio River, you can hear the music all around you, especially with Live on the Banks, a Saturday night music series. 4

visitowensboro.com

Friday nights just got even more exciting with the addition of RiverPark Center’s Downtown Live summer series. Spanning 12 Fridays starting in mid-May, this 21-and-older event will see RPC transform into an entertainment complex with a different theme each night. FYI, you can carry an alcoholic beverage with you as you enjoy the sights and sounds of downtown Owensboro. Just ask your bartender for one of the plastic green cups and treat yourself to a beer, margarita or glass of wine as you wind your way through “The District.” Brasher’s Little Nashville is Owensboro’s newest hotspot for live music, featuring artists from all over the region who perform late week. You’ll get the chance to hear up-and-coming rock and country artists from all over the midwest perform at this downtown venue on Second Street. And on Sundays, they offer a Bloody Mary Bar for brunch! Featuring an entire neighborhood turned live music venue, PorchFest OBKY is one of the coolest experiences for live music enthusiasts. Bands and solo musicians perform from the front porch of several historic houses along Owensboro’s famous Griffith Avenue corridor for an entire day and night of free entertainment. Just a short 20-minute drive away, you can catch some big-name performers at the Beaver Dam Amphitheater—or, as we call it here, The Dam. Owensboro Visitor Guide

BOURBON

Bourbon

Owensboro owes its rich bourbon history to its setting along a rail line and waterway, its tremendous limestone water source, extensive oak forests, and the hard work of local grain farmers – the perfect recipe for producing the world’s greatest bourbon whiskeys. Our bourbon roots go back to 1885 to the original Green River Distilling Co., one of the oldest bourbon distilleries in the world. Owensboro’s staple bourbon attraction is the Green River Distilling Co., a sprawling whiskey distillery offering a behind-the-scenes look at how bourbon is really made. Grab a hand-crafted cocktail in their lounge, enjoy

From traditional southern cuisine to high-end seafood, to local diners that sell some of the best burgers and fried chicken you can find, we’ve got it all, and then some. But what Owensboro has really become famous for is the barbecue. In fact, Owensboro proudly boasts the title, “BBQ Capital of the World,” and once you’ve tried, you’ll see why that title sticks.

Moonlite Bar-B-Q is an Owensboro staple where even former U.S. presidents have feasted on its unique flavors. While you’ve probably had barbecue a time or two in your life, there’s a couple of unique dishes Moonlite became known for, and one of those is chopped mutton. We recommend trying it with a side of sliced onions and some of Moonlite’s mouth-watering sides. Old Hickory Bar-B-Que is another legend in Owensboro, with a team dedicated to providing the finest quality barbecue you can find. Exclusively using hickory wood to cook its meat, Old Hickory’s barbecue embodies a unique, distinctive flavor that’s become recognized all over the country. You 10

The Miller House serves traditional food with a southern influence. And if you’re in the mood for some of the best seafood and creative cocktails in the state, head to Lure Seafood & Grille, where you can enjoy oysters on the half shell, lobster, crab legs, salmon and a full bar with all the bourbon and craft beer you could want while overlooking the Ohio River. Or keep the river vibes flowing at Burger Theory, a more casual spot for your visit. Named after the largest sassafras tree in the world, Sassafras is located only a couple of miles down the street in the middle of the city. If salad is your thing, Briarpatch has you covered.
