History Owensboro is located on a picturesque bend on the Ohio River in Daviess County, Kentucky.

Original settlers arrived in flatboats coming from the northeast, as they naturally drifted to the south side of the riverbanks with the swift currents. The original site was called “Yellow Banks” in reference to the color of the soil along the banks. In 1815, the Kentucky General Assembly passed an act creating Daviess County to honor the fallen hero Joseph Hamilton Daveiss, who died in the Battle of Tippecanoe (a clerk misspelled the last name in the draft of the act, and so it became Daviess County). In 1817, the General Assembly provided for the planned town and specified that it should be called Owensborough in memory of Col. Abraham Owen, who also fell at Tippecanoe. In 1893, the spelling was changed to

The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art presents traveling exhibitions from major museums, galleries and private collections, and rotating exhibitions from the permanent collection. The facility includes three wings, two of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Sites: the 1909 Carnegie Library and the John Hampden Smith House, a pre-Civil War era mansion which serves as a decorative arts wing. The permanent collection features American, European, and Asian fine and decorative arts dating from the 15th century to the present; a stained glass gallery of late 19th century German stained glass windows; a collection of contemporary studio art glass; a major collection of American Folk Art; and a collection of works by artists and craftsmen with Kentucky connections from the early 1800’s to the present. The Museum houses a Regional Art Market that offers works for sale by artists and craftsmen from Kentucky and surrounding states.

In the Coal Mine Gallery, visitors learn about the history and safety of coal mining in Western Kentucky.

Three stunning fountains, a cascading waterfall, swinging metal benches, an open-air pavilion, concession stand, clean restrooms, free Wi-Fi, and the worldrenowned children’s playground make this park in the heart of the riverfront a vibrant downtown Owensboro mustsee attraction. The Charles Shelton Memorial, a monument to POWs and MIAs from all wars, is located at the east end of the park. Lazy Dayz, housed in Smothers Park has been named “Top Playground in the World” by the Landscape Architects Network. Lazy Dayz Children’s Playground and Spray Park is completely handicap-accessible and features state-of-the-art material.

ROMP: Bluegrass Roots & Branches Festival The River of Music Party (ROMP) features the best bluegrass artists from around the world who come to Yellow Creek Park to put on an outdoor show of a lifetime. Grab your friends and family and enjoy this incredible bluegrass and Americana music festival. Attendees can make the daily trip out to the park or camp right in the heart of the 150-acre facility famous for its raptor rescue center, winding creek, nature trails, and vast grassy field. The festival also features vendors from around the country and some of the most unique food trucks you’ll ever find.

International Bar-B-Q Festival On the second weekend in May, the Owensboro Riverfront becomes a hub of activity as cooking teams gather to compete with their secret barbecue recipes. More than 80,000 people attend the festival with more than 10 tons of mutton, 1,500 gallons of burgoo, and 5,000 chickens prepared and sold. Musical entertainment, children’s activities, backyard cook off, arts and crafts and more add to the fun. Come enjoy two days of barbecue heaven!

Owensboro Air Show The skies above Owensboro will be buzzing with the sounds of vintage aircraft, military war birds, and jets as the annual Owensboro Air Show takes to the skies. Enjoy static displays of aircraft and a glimpse of some amazing aerial demonstrations on Friday night at the Owensboro Regional Airport. Head downtown on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the incredible talents of some of the best pilots in the world, including the famous Blue Angels, as they push the limits and showcase the best in aviation technology and history.

The Smell of BBQ in Owensboro Whether it’s at the International BBQ Festival, attending a church picnic or driving by one of Owensboro’s signature Bar-B-Que restaurants, the sweet smell of Bar-B-Que fills the air.

Owensboro is known for a unique style of Bar-B-Que where mutton (sheep) is slowly smoked over a pit of hickory wood. The BBQ Festival offers people the opportunity to try multiple styles of Bar-B-Que including mutton, pork and chicken. Of course Owensboro also is known for burgoo. Think of it as the best vegetable soup you’ve ever had with a kick of a perfect blend of spices.
