Christmas market on Neuer Platz
When the fragrance of mulled wine, roasted almonds and incense begins to waft through the city centre of Klagenfurt, Advent has arrived at Neuer Platz. Clustered around the Lindwurm statue, the square turns into one of Carinthia’s most versatile Christmas markets. Against a historic backdrop, visitors can look forward to a market linking tradition with modern-day variety.

The „Hafenknistern” also offers crafting stations, small surprises and magical attractions for young visitors. At 15:00 on Saturdays and 15:00 and 17:00 on Sundays, the children’s Christmas cinema welcomes visitors at the Dock 04 Theater in the Hafenstadt quarter. From 18:00 - 20:00, the children’s disco in the Dock 04 Theater opens its doors.

The taste of Advent in Carinthia
The Family Advent in the open-air museum has many facets, also when it comes to culinary offerings: The Higher Federal College Pitzelstätten serves up traditional dishes, and for drinks, head to the Messnerhaus and the Feldharpfe. The Müller family sells hot roasted chestnuts, while various Maria Saal-based associations serve up mulled wine, non-alcoholic punch and snacks. “KirSin’s hand- und selbstgemacht“ in the Bodnerhaus serves cakes, cookies and coffee.
Traditional and atmospheric programme “Stubenmusik” folk music, choirs, readings and theatrical productions await in the Hanebauerhaus, the open grounds, the Salzerhaus and the Urchhaus and are guaranteed to
get you in a festive mood. Encounter customs that have stood the test of time, stories by classic authors like Rosegger and Unterlercher or insights into historic recipes, including book tips.
An Advent with a cultural angle
In the Wolschart chapel, you will find nativity scenes to admire. In the forge of the Urchhaus, impressive Krampus masks are on display, and the doll exhibition in the Bodnerhaus tells the story of “Christmas Eve in the winter forest”.

The Krampus tradition in the Alpine-Adriatic region
Shaggy furs, rattling chains, fiery folklore: 1,000 “Krampus” and “Perchten” impersonators from the Alpine-Adriatic region take part in the Krampus run through Klagenfurt. Don’t miss this haunting and archaic highlight of Carinthian heritage and witness the spectacle that unfolds between the seat of the provincial government and the Alter Platz.
Feast day of St. Barbara
A branch that symbolises hope
On the feast day of St. Barbara, small cherry tree branches are handed out at the Christmas market in Klagenfurt as harbingers of good luck and the Christmas message of hope. An absolute must at the start of Advent

At the Domkirche St. Peter and Paul, Advent is celebrated in a quiet and reflective manner. Highlights include the Rorate candlelight masses in the early morning on 06, 13 and 20 December, always at 06:00, followed by a communal breakfast.

Landhaushof
On 23 December at 18:00, the historic Landhaushof hosts the “Stiller Advent” – a musical opportunity to take stock and pause just before Christmas. Carinthian choirs such as “Die Stimmen aus Kärnten”, die “Sängerrunde Klagenfurt Emmersdorf” and a surprise choir give a concert together with the Alphorn group “Valcanale”. An invitation to listen, marvel and get into the Christmas spirit.
