The beautiful landscape of Innherred tells a rich history. We see the landscape of today with fresh eyes thanks to glimpses of the past. Explore historic Innherred, including the battleground from 1030 at Stiklestad, rock carvings, burial mounds, World War II (WWII) relics, and interesting museums.

THE CRADLE OF NORWAY

Stiklestad in Verdal is considered the birthplace of the nation, where Olav Haraldsson (later St.Olav) was killed in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030. This transformed Norway and laid the groundwork for modern Norway, which is defined by Christianity, the judicial system, and values. Stiklestad National Cultural Centre conveys this history through exhibitions, storytelling, and events.

ROCK CARVINGS AND BURIAL MOUNDS

For thousands of years, the Trondheimfjord has served as both transportation route and larder. The 6000 year old rock carving “The Bøla Reindeer,” among other things, demon- strates the infancy of settlement in Innherred. The sea level was higher at the time, and people hunted. The concentra- tion of large burial mounds and graves in Innherred attests to active trading with foreign countries. The Viking Age is defined by strong chiefs pre-occupied with Norse gods and blood vengeance. Stiklestad National Cultural Centre and Egge Museum are two places where you can learn more about the Viking Age.

MONASTERY RUINS

At the end of the 11th century, there was a Cistercian monastery at Okkenhaug in Levanger. Today, we can only see the remains of the monastery church. However, a modern Maria Monastery founded by the same citeaux-order is nearby. Munkeby Herberge, with its farm shop, cafe, and lodging, is located between the two monasteries.

TRONDHEIMSFJORDEN AS A TRAVEL ROUTE

People in the Trondheimfjorden region have relied on the

sea for transportation since ancient times. Trade was one of the pillars upon which cities and commercial centers were built. The city of Levanger was well established by the 1500s. The shipping industry became vital for the retail trade in Innherred during the 17th and 18th centuries, transporting agricultural products, fish, and lumber. Ships were also an important mode of transportation. Here in Innherred, we have the world’s last sailing sloop, Jekta Pauline, now protected and a living museum. Her home port is Kjerknesvgen kai in Inderøy.

STEINKJER’S RECONSTRUCTED TOWN

During WWII, Steinkjer was bombed and almost the entire city was destroyed, but thankfully no lives were lost. Steinkjer was rebuilt both during and after the war, and it is now one of the most successful and well-preserved revival cities in Norway.

FALSTADSENTERET

In 1895, the Falstad Institution for the Upbringing of Troubled Boys was founded. The German Nazis seized the building in the fall of 1941 and established SS-Strafgefan- genenlager Falstad as a political prison camp.

During the war, over 4.200 people from at least 15 coun- tries were imprisoned here, and more than 200 prisoners were executed and buried in mass graves in the nearby forest. The Falstad Centre is now a museum, war memorial, and human rights center that tells the story of war. The historic prison camp can be experienced virtually thanks to cutting-edge digital technology.

SUMMER MOUNTAIN FARMS IN SNÅSA

Mountain farming was very important in snåsa during the 17th and 18th centuries. Snåsa may have had as many as 300 summer mountain farms at the time.

Nowadays, Snåsa has between 15-20 ac- tive mountain summer farms where you can experience the traditional food and farm life in the summer.

Blåfjella – Skjækerfjella/Låarte-Skæhkere nasjonalparks one of the largest national parks in Norway and is a fabulous area for those who are into hiking.

The landscape is characterised by low mountain areas with gentle terrains. The many mountain valleys, ancient settlements, and large contiguous woodlands that have remained relatively untouched by humans are what distinguishes this area.Large marshes, sparse forest, and bare mountain are also features of the vegetation. Midtiklumpen mountain at 1333 m.a.s.l. is the national park’s highest mountain.

The national park is more than just wilderness; it is a cultural landscape shaped by generations of South Sami reindeer husbandry.

In conjunction with the national park, “the four mountain farms” of Snåsa are frequently mentioned: Holden, Gressåmoen, Gaundalen, and Gjefsjøen. This is a popular route for those looking for multi-day hiking trips.

Directions to entrance points to the park:

Verdal: Road 757 towards Vera. Trails into the park from Skjækerfossen, Storlunet and Vera.

Steinkjer: Road 762 towards Ogndalen to Lustadvatnet and Norway’s Geographical Mid-point. Marked trail to the midpoint, you can also continue on to Lake Skjækervatnet. Also marked trail from Mokk Farm to Lake Skjækervatnet.

Snåsa: Road 763 towards Snåsa - by Breide it is signposted to the park and Grønningen where there are several trails.

Alternative: Road 763 to Snåsa city centre. Take exit to Agle and drive to Gressåmoen, where there are trails into the park. There are also trails from Storåsen and Roktdalen.

Innherred is located in the heart of the main area where the South Sami still practice traditional Sami reindeer husbandry. Snåsa/Snåase is a bilingual municipality and is central to the care of the South Sámi culture and language.

At Saemien Sijte – South Sami museum and cultural centre in Snåsa you can become better acquainted with the South Sami culture, the language, the people and see interesting exhibitions.

In Verdal, the traces of Sami activity are many. If you follow the cultural trail from Sul and up to Brenntjønna, along the DNT path to Meråker, you will be walking through a Sami landscape and an important settlement area for the Samis until 1976.

Helmesmyra on Lake Tomtvatnet in Levanger was a permanent Sami winter settlement until the 1960s, and Spjelmyra, not far away, had a reindeer slaughter place. The Sami sold reindeer meat and other goods to the villagers, and they were always present at the Levanger Christmas market and the Marsimartnan market fair. Sami touches are always present in the modern Marsimartnan market fair.

From 1865 to 1916, Finnheiem in Røra, Inderøy was an old Sami settlement. Here, the Sami farmed and kept reindeer. Ole Liljestrand, the last resident, moved to Fleskhus in 1916. The trail to Finnheimen is 1.8 km long and well marked. The route description can be found at www.ut.no.

Blåfjella – Skjækerfjella/Låarte-Skæhkere National Park is and has always been a central south Sami area. The Samis have lived in the area for hundreds of years, and those who know where to look can still find ancient settlements, gathering places, burial grounds, and sacred sites. There are two reindeer grazing districts within the national park: Skjækerfjella reindeer pasturing district and Luru reindeer pasturing district.

Only one hour from Trondheim, the Golden Road, Stiklestad, and the historic town of Levanger offer unique experiences and cuisine. Spend the night in an old Trønderlån, a glass igloo, or a completely unique hotel.

Surrounded by nature on all sides, the trip goes both over and along the beautiful Trondheimsfjord. If you take the time to experience and discover everything the trip has to offer, you need one or more overnight stays.

The Golden Road provides exceptional art, culture, hospitality, food, and lodging. Local food, modern art, and oneof-a-kind architecture coexist in the picturesque cultural landscape that is Inderøy. Take a break in the farm yard before continuing your journey!

Stiklestad should be your next stop on your journey. The place that helped form the foundation of the Kingdom of Norway as we know it today can be found just outside the center of Verdal. In 1030, the great battle between the peasant army and the royal army took place here, which resulted in the death of King Olav Haraldsson (St. Olav).

If you’re interested in history, a visit to the protected wooden town of Levanger is a must. Stroll through the streets, learn about the city’s history and architecture, and relax on the pier or at a café.

Kortmann’s Lysfabrikk in Vuddudalen is a must-see on the way back to Trondheim. In their distinctive and fun American-inspired Pickup Cafe, complete with pastel-coloured booths and a jukebox, you can enjoy juicy homemade burgers.

Levanger Municipality

Welcome to the city in the heart of Trøndelag, where you can enjoy shopping, fjord and mountain walks, tranquility, and historical experiences. A city with a protected city centre and a surrounding agricultural and nature area. The E6 and the Nordlandsbanen train line run through the municipal- ity, and Trondheim Airport Værnes is 45 minutes away. Tourist information is available in the reception area of the town hall.

HISTORIC MARKET PLACE

Levanger is a historic mar- ketplace with significant trade with our Swedish neighbors dating back to the Middle Ages. People from Jämtland came here to trade goods and horses with people from Norway’s coast. The innermost ice-free harbor in the Trondheim Fjord was Levanger. When the railway arrived around 1900, it took over the traffic between Jämtland and Trøndelag, diminishing Levanger’s role as a trading place.

To preserve the memory of this Jämtland trade, the Marsimartnan winter

market has been revived in modern times.

Today, the city centre is distinguished by local gal- leries as well as a variety of shops and cafés.

ALTI Magneten shopping center at Moan is within walking distance south of the city center.

11 HISTORIC WOODEN HOUSE TOWN

Levanger is one of Nor- way’s most fascinating wooden house towns, with significant national cultural heritage value.

The city centre of Levanger was rebuilt in the building traditions of the time after it burned down in 1897. The houses in the city centre are distinctive and unique in a national context, particularly those in Swiss and Art Nouveau style. The centre has a con- tinuous park feature that aims to keep fires from spreading. 157 properties in the city centre are designated as protected.

The City Museum in Levan- ger consists of six houses: Damskipsbrygga wharf, which houses historical exhibits, Emilie’s house,

an old workers’ residence, and Brusve Gård, one of the city’s large farms. An old workshop in Hvedings auto, a school museum in the old town school, and the workers’ residence Reinslyst are also on the list.

With over 500,000 nega- tives, the Levanger Foto Museum has one of the country’s largest photo collections. There is also the country’s oldest colour image lab and colour photograph in Norway.

MARSIMARTNAN

The annual Marsimartnan, a winter market rooted in a 1000-year trading tradi- tion. The Marsimartnan (1.- 3. March) will be arranged in safe and familiar forms, with market trade and life and bustle in the city centre.

The Christmas market emerged as an addition to the Marsimartnan in the 18th century. It takes place on the first week- end of Advent, with a Christmas-decorated town center, stalls in the park, and activities for both young and old.

OTHER EVENTS

The Culture Week is held in Levanger from the 2. - 11. June, with numerous cultural activities taking place.

The Backyard Festival and The Levangermart- nan Summer Market take place from August 2. to 5., with numerous concerts and activities taking place throughout the city.

More ecperiences in Levanger municipality:

Ytterøy, the pearl of the Trondheimsfjorden, is a 30-minute ferry ride from Levanger’s city center. We recommend taking your bike on the ferry and taking in the lush cultural landscape.

Make sure to take a meal break at Kafe Rampa.

Munkeby Mariakloster

was a cistercian monastery at Okkenhaug in Levanger – probably established by English monks in the latter half of the 12th century. Today, 800 years later, the new monastery is run by French monks of the same order. The monks make The Munkeby cheese, which is regarded as one of Norway’s best.

In a former Nazi prison camp, The Falstad Centre Museum is a human rights centre and war memorial. During the period 1942- 1943, the occupying forces executed over 200 prison- ers in the Falstad forest. There are also hotel and conference facilities at the centre.

In a troll forest not far from the Falstad Centre, you can get close to nature in the floating tente and tree top cabins at Treetop Ekne. They also provide a variety of activities such as kayaking, SUP, zip-lining, fishing, and rowing.

At Hammer Gård, close to Hammervatnet, you can spend the night in a unique barn apartment with a pan- oramic view of the sheep. They also have a barn shop with local food in the yard.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Perhaps you’d like to hike along the pilgrim route that runs through the mu- nicipality? You can enjoy food and drink and stay overnight along the way. Memories and experiences are created “en route.”

We can recommend visiting Frol Mountain and Upper

Forra Nature Reserve.

With Forramyrene, its bird- rich habitat, and Hårskallen mountain, which has a rare plant flora, it is probably Levanger’s most visited outdoor recreational area in both winter and summer.

Skallstuggu lodge is located at the foot of the Frol mountains, making it an ideal starting point for hik- ing and other activities in both summer and winter. On Sundays, the restaurant is open to the public and serves tasty and hearty local fare.

Levanger’s town centre, with its distinctive wooden houses, has four marked trails leading from the Stadium park, with routes ranging from 1.2 to 4.8 km.

Other hiking tips are the Kjærlighetsstien (the Love Path), BokkhugenStaupshaugen, and Stokkvola.

Torsbustaden ski resort or one of the many ski slopes are also good tips for those visiting Levanger in the winter.

Municipality centre: Straumen

Inderøy municipality

Inderøy stretches from the E6 motorway to Mosvik on the Fosen Peninsula, passing through the fertile peninsula in the Trondheimsfjord and the strait of Skarnsundet.

This region is rich in agriculture, forestry, and cultural traditions.

NORWAYS MOST ATTRACTIVE TOWN 2020

Straumen was chosen as Norway’s most attractive town in 2020, and thus won the attractive city award. Straumen, according to the jury, is a role model for other places because they use what they have, refine it, and create a strong and clear identity for the place.

Inderøy has one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in Norway, which, along with the sea and special light, has inspired artists and authors for hundreds of years.

Inderøy is conveniently located, only 1.5 hours

from both Trondheim and Namdalen. The lush peninsula also has a long shoreline, excellent outdoor recreational opportunities, and a rich history.

Inderøy is close to Trondheim Airport Værnes as well as the railway line.

Straumen, the municipal centre, takes its name from one of the country’s strongest tidal currents, which runs through the narrow neck of water between the Trondheimfjorden and the Borgenfjorden.

Galleries, cafes, and quaint niche shops can be found in the picturesque town centre.

The small red-painted house Klokkarstu (which houses the second-hand shop and cafe Kjerringa me ‘Straumen), Nils Aas Kunstverksted, Rødbrygga restaurant, Galleri Mitsel, Inderøy Landhandleri, Inderøy Slakteri, Marens Bakeri, and Jostu Lysstøperi are all located here.

On the other side of the Skarnsundet bridge, you can visit visit Selsethloftet farm shop in Framverran. Mosvik village includes Mosvik Brygge, Jekta Fjordstue, a hairdresser, and a grocery store. Mosvik Museum is housed in the old Grande School and features an exhibition of old village agricultural tools.

The fertile soil and clear skies above Inderøy produce excellent crops for small-scale food farmers. Inderøysodd, made in Straumen by Inderøy Slakteri, is a popular variation of the traditional Trønder dish.

SUSTAINABLE DESTINATION

Inderøy and The Golden Road have achieved status as a sustanable destination. This indicates a set of values where experiences and development take place with consideration for history, local people and the next generation.

16 DEN GYLDNE OMVEI

The stretch of road known as The Golden Road takes you through beautiful cultural landscape along county road Fv761/FV755 (with detours) in Inderøy municipality, and has a multitude of interesting sites with many family activities. Locally produced food, special places to stay and dine, local artists, exhibitions and attractions

are among the experiences along The Golden Route. There are 25 events planned throughout the year celebrating its 25th anniversary. www.dgo.no.

NILS AAS (1933 - 2004)

Nils Aas, who was born and raised in Straumen, was a leading artist of his generation and is widely regarded as one of Norway’s most important sculptors. This year marks what would have been his 90th birthday, which Nils Aas Kunstverksted is commemorating with a series of events throughout the year.

4 MUUSTRØPARKEN

The Muustrøparken is an idyllic place in the municipal centre of Straumen. As you walk along the path, you can use all of your senses. Nils Aas’s large and small sculptures, as well as a mill, are among the

MUUSTRØPARKEN THE VIEW FROM FLAGET LENA JOHNSEN

attractions. Ringstu, located in the middle of the park, is one of Inderøy’s oldest preserved buildings. At the mouth of the river ”Grana,” you can walk across the Muusbrua bridge, built in 1816, to the sound of Nils Aas’ sculpture ”Flounder.”

3 SKARNSUNDET BRIDGE

connects Mosvik at the Fosen-peninsula to the rest of Inderøy. This is one of the world’s longest cable-stayed bridges, with its distinctive red cables reaching into the sky like a massive harp.

Under the bridge, in the Skarnsundet Strait, is a popular diving and fishing spot. The orange sea plants give the impression that the water is more tropical. The National Antiquarian Society listed the bridge for protection in 2008. Skarnsundet Fjord Centre, located near the bridge, is popular with anglers.

HIKING TRAILS

Enjoy one of the many cultural- and hiking trails in Inderøy. Try the cultural

trail Straumen-Vangshylla, the Northugrunden, Letnes Cultural Trail or the trail up to Storknuken Mountain. Many also choose a biking holiday in Inderøy. On bike or by feet, explore ancient thoroughfares from fjord to fjord and through beautiful landscape interspersed with burial mounds and monoliths.

Between hiking and cycling you have plenty of time for gallery visits, shopping and enjoying good food.

If you are visiting in the winter, we recommend visiting Petter Northug ski stadium close to Straumen, Vårlonken in Mosvik or Solbergrunden ski trail in Framverran.

National Bike route 1

“The coastal route” follows the coast from Svinesund to Kirkenes and in Innherred the route passes through Meltingen and Inderøy to Steinkjer.

Steinkjer municipality

Steinkjer municipality stretches along the entire north side of the Beistadfjorden, from the high mountains in the east to the coast and Inner Fosen in the west.

The city of Steinkjer is located on the banks of the Beitstadfjorden, the innermost arm of the Trondheimsfjord.

The Steinkjer farm has been a common thread in Steinkjer’s history since the Saga times. When craftsmen and tradespeople settled in the area around Steinkjer farm, the city grew.

The traditional sloop “Jekt” and garrison environment at Sannan inspired new ideas and increased activity in Steinkjer, which was granted city status in 1857

The Empire-style wooden buildings were destroyed in the town fire of 1900, and were replaced by beautiful Art Nouveau towers and spires. In April 1940, Steinkjer was bombed. The reconstruction began in 1941 and was mostly finished by 1965.

THE RECONSTRUCTED TOWN

Professor Sverre Pedersen was in charge of the reconstruction of the town. The main street, Kongens gate, is a Baroque view axis with the fire station tower and Oftensen mountain as central motifs.

7 STEINKJER CHURCH

One of the most important artists in Norwegian modernism, Jakob Weidemann, was a forerunner of abstract art in Norway in the years following WWII. His masterpiece, Steinkjer Church (AKA Weidemann’s Cathedral), stands tall with its 38 m freestanding clock tower.

MINING - HISTORICAL CULTURAL HERITAGE

37 Fosdalen’s quarries in Malm were the deepest iron ore mine in Northern Europe until 1997. This laid the groundwork for prosperity, making Malm one of the wealthiest municipalities in the country.

HISTORICAL STEINKJER

Norway’s first recorded Stone Age settlement on

Våttbakken, as well as several Roman and Iron Age burial grounds on Egge, demonstrate that the area has been active for thousands of years. According to Snorre’s King sagas, there was a kaupang here during the Viking Age, and the Egge area has a long history as a chieftain’s seat. The great chieftains who fought against Olav Haraldsson in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030 came from here. The Battle of Mære in 1021 is less known, but it was the death of Olve from Egge in this battle that ironically becomes the first sting that turns the chieftain against the king and serves as the prelude to the Battle of Stiklestad.

29 At Egge Museum, history is conveyed right from the Stone Age to the present day - burial mounds, a complete 19th-century farm complex, and the County Commissioner’s Farm from 1919.

8 Many stone carvings from the Stone Age can be found at Bøla. The 6000-year-old “Bøla reindeer” and the “Bøla man” on skis are the most well-known of these. There are also bear and bird sculptures, a Stone Age settlement, and a nice nature trail with a beautiful view of Lake Snåsavatnet. bolarein.no

9 More than 400 Neolithic and Bronze Age rock carvings can be found in the Bardal field. Humans, animals, and boats are among the motifs. The figures are best viewed

when the sun is low in the sky. It is easily accessible and close to the farm Bardal.

THE EVENT CITY STEINKJER

The Cultural Scene “Vårt Hjem” is a pub with a unique atmosphere of homeliness, ambience and entertainment. They feature concerts with local, national and international artists year round.

There are numerous festivals and events held throughout the year, including the Hilmar Festival, the Steinkjer Festival, Slabberas, Winter Fest, and the Steinkjermartna Summer Market, to name a few. Cultural events are also held at Dampsaga Cultural Centre throughout the year.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

Snåsa municipality

Snåsa / Snåasen tjïelte is large in size, larger than the county of Vestfold and a paradise for those who love outdoor activities, hunting and fishing.

Snåsa town centre, with most functions within trade and service, is located at the end of Snåsavatnet in the northeast. The location of the centre was controlled by the railway. When it arrived in 1926, the “station town” was established.

28 Previously, while steamboats connected Snåsa to the outside world, the natural centre was the lovely inland port town Viosen. The settlement extends all the way down to the water’s edge and is distinguished by distinctive architecture and the venerable Vonheim - a protected assembly hall from 1901 that serves as a symbol of good traditions for cultural heritage and community life.

The town center is only 7 kilometers away from the E6. An alternative route from

Steinkjer (just 45 min by car) is road 763, which takes you through a diverse landscape and with fine viewpoints of Lake Snåsavatnet.

Along the way, you’ll see Jørstadelva and Tangen war memorials, as well as Bølareinen rock carvings

If you exit the road from Breide, you will get to the gateway of Blåfjella and Skjækerfjella National Park. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, but in recent years industrial jobs have increased.

SOUTH SAMI CULTURE

Snåsa is the epicenter of South Sami culture, with several Sami institutions, including a kindergarten, school, and dormitory for South Sami children. The municipality of Snåsa is involved in the administration of Sami language and culture. Several state jobs are linked to the Sami parliament’s activities.

36 At Saemien Sijte, a South Sami Museum and

Cultural Centre, you can learn more about the southSami culture and history. The muesum is open yearround and is well worth a visit.

Modern reindeer husbandry is part of the economic base and the cultural landscape is beautifully surrounded by farmland, powerful wilderness - a paradise for outdoor life, fishing and hunting.

SUMMER MOUNTAIN FARMS

Summer mountain farming has rich traditions in Snåsa, and these traditions are now kept alive by around 15 mountain farms open during the summer season. The cows graze on fresh herb-rich grass, which imparts special qualities to the milk and mountain farm products. You can find peace of mind and a magical atmosphere at the mountain farms, as well as a wide range of mountain farm products produced on the premises.

Summer farms can be found both along Lake Snåsavatnet and high in the mountains.

LOCAL FOOD

Locally produced food is available not only at the summer mountain farms. The municipality has a large number of local food producers, and the store Arv Lokalmat is in the center of town. It sells local food from Snåsa and Innherred in general, and it also serves as a tourist information centre.

FB/Arvlokalmat

GJERSTADHUSET MUSEUM

Joralf Gjerstad, the psychic “Snåsa Man,” grew up not far from Saemien Sijte and Snåsa Church. It has been restored to its former glory and appears exactly as it did during Gjerstad’s childhood. Visit the house to see the photos and honours bestowed upon Joralf and his wife Signe. There is a “Joralf museum” in the form of an exhibition about Joralf’s life and work at the Snåsa hotel. Among the items on display are a bust of the Snåsa man, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

PLACES OF WORSHIP

39 Snåsa Church is a cruciform church in neo-Gothic style. The oldest part, which today is the choir and sacristy, was built in the first half of the 13th century.

Megard church site is an open-air church situated at St. Olavskilden in Imsdalen. The water from the spring has throughout history had a reputation for having healing powers.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Almost half the municipality is protected through Blåfjella - Skjækerfjella National Park, one of Norway’s largest national parks and a great starting point for anyone who wants to go hiking both in summer and winter.

“Walking the mountain farms” is a real concept in Snåsa. It involves a multi-day hike through Snåsas stunning mountain areas with accommodation and refreshments at some of the 4 mountain farms. There are 4 mountain farms; Gjefsjøen, Holden, Gaundalen and Gressåmoen.

Snåsa Mountain Board is responsible for managing Crown lands in Snåsa, Norway’s second largest commons. They also rent out cabins that are excellent bases for hunting, fishing and outdoor activities. Additionally, the 2000 fishing waters in the municipality should tempt the fishing enthusiast.

Lake Snåsavatnet, the 6th largest lake in Norway, offers very good trout - and char fishing, in addition to being excellent for canoeing and kayaking. There are 5 marked paddle routes - where you

can paddle among islets and reefs, in small rivers and open water.

Along Lake Snåsavatnet there are several great accommodation venues where you can stay close to sights and places to eat. Such as Garveriet Kafe og Gjenbruksutsalg, Snåsakroa and Kafe Midtpunktet.

Snåsa municipality has several marked bike routes. One of which is the route Sentrumsrunden. While biking this route you can also visit Bergsåsen.

34 Bergsåsen Nature Reserve, located in the middle of Snåsa town centre, featuring many fine trails and view points. Both here and Finsåsmarka have rich occurrences of wild orchids between May and July. Snåsa has chosen the “lady’s slipper” orchid as its municipal flower and it also features on the municipal coat of arms. 17 different types of orchids have been registered in Snåsa
