Plus, our award-winning downtown is packed with shops, restaurants, and acres upon acres of greenspace. Nearby, the Village of West Greenville is a hip hub for creativity, coffee, and community—Greenville’s mini-Soho.
Fun Surrounding Towns to Explore

Located north of downtown, both Greer and Travelers Rest offer an idyllic, quaint downtown area perfect for dining alfresco. Head to Taylors, Greenville’s largest suburb, for arcade games and axe-throwing in a converted industrial setting at Taylors Mill. To the south, don’t miss out on Fountain Inn’s charming Main Street and some of the best BBQ you’ll find anywhere in the country at Bobby’s BBQ. Curious about the castle you drove by on I-385? Add to Your Map: Road Trip Stops
It’s time to pull out that map and chart your course around Greenville. We’ve compiled a starting list of places and spaces to make for a memorable visit. Mix and match these suggestions to begin building your itinerary!
Downtown Greenville
Head downtown for your first stop. Greenville’s Main Street features 1.5 miles of shops, restaurants, galleries, and more to explore. Go on the hunt for nine bronze Mice on Main hidden in various Main Street locations, pan for treasure at the Greenville Gemstone Mine, and stop into Mast General Store for the old-fashioned candy barrels! Plus, a visit to downtown isn’t complete without a stop at Falls Park on the Reedy. The park offers 32 acres of greenspace where you can stroll across the one-of-a-kind Liberty Bridge to get the best view of the upper Reedy River Falls
Pretty Place
Words don’t usually suffice to explain the natural beauty of what locals nicknamed “Pretty Place,” so we’ll just let the photos speak for themselves. Located on YMCA Camp Greenville property, you’ll be hardpressed to find a better seat for a sunrise than the east-facing Fred W. Symmes Chapel
Photo
Caesars Head Overlook
Caesars Head State Park offers a picture-perfect vista any time of day. One of the best parts about this view is that it doesn’t require a hike to earn it. Simply park and walk down a short sidewalk to the stunning overlook that’ll have you filling up your phone camera in no time. Ten minutes south, witness indescribable views of the surrounding mountains from Bald Rock Heritage Preserve, a natural scenic overlook atop a massive rock outcropping.
BMW Performance Center
For a more thrilling break from the drive, stop at the BMW Performance Center in nearby Greer and book the two-hour Performance Drive to test drive various BMWs and put them through their paces. More than a quick detour, this drive allows you to experience the latest models firsthand; it’s a ride you won’t soon forget. Afterward, stop by the BMW Zentrum or The Ultimate Driving Museum, or book a BMW Manufacturing Plant factory tour to see the intricate processes as hundreds of robots weld high-strength steel parts together for the BMW XM body.
A Snapshot of Greenville’s Weather
While summer months can get warm (ranging from 80–90 degrees), and winters are delightfully mild (with temps ranging from 40–60 degrees), it’s spring and fall with their temps in the 60s and 70s that bring out Greenville’s best. And if you’re looking for a snow day, Greenville almost always gets two (nonconsecutive) days of snow each winter—best spent building snowmen, sledding on cookie sheets (no point in buying a sled), and battling in epic snowball fights.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Bordering the Reedy River, the two-story redbrick structure known as the Wyche Pavilion is imprinted on the city’s history. It was built in 1904 as a paint shop for the adjacent Greenville Coach Factory and later became home to Duke’s Mayonnaise. Today, it’s one of the area’s favorite open-air wedding and event venues.

Step Back in Time
Travel Through Greenville’s Historic Neighborhoods
Take a tour of our seven official historic neighborhoods and feel like you are stepping foot into a journey through time. Learn about the history of our area while enjoying the beauty of our architecture.
Colonel Elias Earle
Named for prominent settler Colonel Elias Earle, whose former estate it now encompasses, the Earle District runs along the north side of Stone Avenue. Here, you’ll find two of Greenville’s oldest landmarks: c.1820 Earle Town House (107 James St.) and Whitehall (310 W. Earle St.), built in 1813 as the summer residence of Governor Henry Middleton.
East Park Avenue
Old oak trees shade this lovely neighborhood of Craftsman, Tudor, and Neoclassical homes developed during the first part of the 20th century. Set on the border of downtown, the East Park district is bordered on the south by McPherson Park, the city’s oldest public green space.
Hampton-Pinckney
Greenville’s first National Register District (designated in 1977) owes its existence to city father Vardry McBee, who purchased 11,000 acres just west of downtown in 1815. His son, Pinckney, built the first house on this land before the Civil War and today, gingerbreadtrimmed Queen Anne Victorians accentuate the neighborhood’s eclectic architecture.
Heritage
Fans of the Bungalow style of architecture will appreciate this district northwest of downtown. Within walking distance of Main Street, the Heritage neighborhood has served as the center of Greenville’s Greek community since 1931.
Overbrook
Marked by spacious lots and larger homes, Overbrook became one of Greenville’s first suburbs with the popularity of the “Toonerville Trolley.” The district is sandwiched between East North Street and I-385.
Pettigru
Just east of downtown, Pettigru is the city’s largest historic district. This area exhibits a variety of architectural styles dating from 1890 to 1930. One gem is the private Poinsett Club, built in 1904 for textile executive Lewis Parker.
West End
Across the Reedy River along South Main Street, chic galleries, chef-driven restaurants, tiny cocktail bars, and new condos testify to a neighborhood on the rise. The former location of Furman University (established 1852), the West End has returned to its early-20th-century roots as a vibrant commercial hub. Farther west on Pendleton Street, the Village of West Greenville shines as an up-and-coming arts district.

Visit GREENVILLE’S UNIVERSITY
One of the top liberal arts and sciences universities in the nation, Furman powers the Upstate with research, entrepreneurial collaboration, and students and faculty engaged in community service. We are known nationally for our innovation, ingenuity and impact. And Furman’s 940-acre campus just north of downtown Greenville is ranked as one of the most beautiful in the nation. Come and see it for yourself.

The Bridges of Greenville County
From the oldest bridge in South Carolina to the only remaining covered bridge in the state, discover our area’s bridges and why they are worth a visit.
Liberty Bridge
Downtown Greenville
Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind beauty—it’s been an iconic gem of Greenville since its completion in 2004. This impressive 345-foot suspension bridge elegantly spans Reedy River Falls, providing pedestrians with an unobstructed panoramic view of scenic Falls Park below.
Eugenia Duke Bridge
Downtown Greenville
Named for one of Greenville’s earliest female entrepreneurs (and the founder of Duke’s Mayonnaise), this green, wood-treaded footbridge crosses the Reedy River upstream from the falls, connecting Art Crossing at RiverPlace and the Peace Center complex.
Poinsett Bridge
Landrum
Constructed in 1820, the Poinsett Bridge is the oldest in the entire state. Spanning Gap Creek to connect Greenville with Asheville, NC, the Gothic arch stone bridge was named for Joel Poinsett, one of Greenville’s most famous historical residents. (And yes, the poinsettia flower was named after him, too!)
Campbell’s Covered Bridge
Landrum
Take a quick trip north, and you’ll find the last remaining covered bridge in South Carolina. Built in 1909, this quaint, timeless 38-foot wooden bridge spans Beaverdam Creek. Feel free to explore the park surrounding this red barnlike icon; you’ll see the remnants of an old grist mill and home site.
Making a Splash in Greenville
Explore Greenville from a new perspective: on and around the water. Spend the day boating on a lake and soaking up the sun, casting for trout in a river, braving rushing whitewater in a kayak, or feeling the mist of a mesmerizing waterfall.
Riding the Rivers
Activities on Upstate rivers can be relaxing or exhilarating—it just depends on your preference!
A Peaceful Float
Saluda Outdoor River Company in Greenville can set you up for a lazy day on the water. Float trips on big blue tubes typically last 2.5–3 hours and cover a section of the Saluda River that alternates between calm sections and small rapids. The whole family is welcome to float—even the dog. Need a little more exercise? Head to nearby Saluda Lake Landing to rent single-person kayaks and standup paddleboards for a more active pursuit on the 331-acre reservoir formed by a dam on the Saluda River.
Kayaking the Rapids
If whitewater floats your boat, the folks at Green River Adventures offer both guided and self-guided kayaking experiences. Try navigating Class I and II rapids on the Lower
Green River, stopping along the way for a swim in a deep, green pool or a picnic on the riverbank. For even more thrills, experienced kayakers can tackle the Class II–IV whitewater on the outfitter’s most challenging trip. One of the steepest commercially run sections of whitewater in the Southeast, the Upper Green River cuts through pristine wilderness flanked by protected forestland.
Fun on the French Broad
Fishing, paddling, tubing:
Headwaters Outfitters in Rosman, NC, can accommodate all kinds of watery fun. Paddle a canoe or kayak along the peaceful first 20 miles of the French Broad River, through fast-moving shoals and around sharp bends. Headwaters provides all the necessary gear for a smallmouth bass float trip or a day spent wading in the
river casting for trout. To cool off mountain-style with the family, book one of the popular two-hour tubing expeditions; the river’s average water temperature in summer is a refreshing 65–70 degrees.
Angling for a Good Time
Known for its expert guides and premier fly shop, Davidson River Outfitters is located on the banks of the Davidson River in Pisgah Forest, NC. They offer a variety of fishing trips for all skill levels, including the ever-popular trout fishing wade trips, smallmouth bass float trips, and expeditions to net the elusive musky—known as the “fish of 10,000 casts.” Avoid the crowds by reserving a spot on their private waters; DRO leases access to the last three miles of the Davidson River, accessible right outside their fly shop.

Lake Life
From fishing to paddleboarding, the Upstate’s three largest lakes offer a wide range of fun.
Lake Hartwell
One of the Southeast’s largest and most popular recreational lakes, Hartwell boasts 56,000 watery acres and 963 miles of shoreline, adding up to countless opportunities for fun. Boaters have access to two public boat ramps, and the lakeshore is punctuated with 109 paved sites for RV or tent camping at Lake Hartwell State Park
Anglers from across the state head to Hartwell—created in 1962 after the Savannah River was dammed to stem local flooding and provide hydroelectric power—to catch striped bass, largemouth, crappie, bream, and catfish. The lake is such a favored place to fish that the Bassmaster Classic fishing tournament has been held here several times.
Known as the “Super Bowl of Professional Bass Fishing,” the Bassmaster competition lures some of the best anglers in the world.
Lake Keowee
Endless adventures await in and on the pristine waters and winding channels of Lake Keowee, a Cherokee name that roughly translates as “the place of the mulberries.” A man-made reservoir created in Seneca by Duke Energy, Keowee claims 18,300 acres of crystal-clear blue-green water, more than 300 miles of shoreline, and gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Boaters can rent watercraft from pontoons, tritoons, and fishing boats to SUPs, canoes, and kayaks. For fun above the water, Upstate Zipline at nearby Keowee-Toxaway State Park lays out adventure along the 1.5 miles of ziplines that soar over treetops and above the lake, letting you appreciate the mountain and water views.
Lake Jocassee
Hailed by National Geographic magazine as one of “50 of the World’s Last Great Places— Destinations of a Lifetime,”
Lake Jocassee is a breathtaking reservoir nestled in the Jocassee Gorges, just north of Lake Keowee. The 7,500-acre lake forms part of Duke Energy’s mammoth Keowee-Toxaway Hydroelectric Project.
Its deep blue waters and stunning scenery furnish a recreational paradise for visitors, with opportunities for activities from swimming and jetskiing to canoeing, kayaking, and taking curated boat tours. There’s even a submerged town for scuba divers to explore. Set on the lake’s shore, Devils Fork State Park provides the only public access to Jocassee. The park is also where you’ll find the very rare and delicate Oconee Bells wildflower, which blooms in early spring.

Waterfall Wonders
Do go chasing waterfalls! South Carolina’s Upcountry contains a wealth of captivating cascades tucked into its forests and deep river gorges. Find these breathtaking waterfalls throughout the Greenville area, from the heart of downtown to tucked away in nature.
Raven Cliff Falls
Dropping 420 feet, Matthews Creek plunges down Raven Cliff Mountain in the Blue Ridge Escarpment in Caesars Head State Park. The waterfall, the state’s tallest and one of its most scenic, was named for the ravens that breed in the lofty cliffs that form the falls.
Wildcat Wayside
For those wanting to be in awe without the work, Lower Wildcat Falls, visible from the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, does not require any hiking. Enjoy the peaceful oasis and even cool off in the refreshing pool at the base. Climb the natural stone stairs to find Middle Wildcat Falls, the “top” of Lower Wildcat Falls. This section also serves as a reviving spot to splash and wade in the water. Nearby, discover the foundations of a 1930s shelter where only a fireplace and chimney remain. Continue your ascent a quarter of a mile further to the base of the 100-foot-high Upper Wildcat Falls. Soak up the peace and tranquility of the forest while watching nature show off.
Cedar Shoals
Tucked away in Fountain Inn, Cedar Falls Park offers a serene escape with its stunning natural and historical beauty. The Reedy River flows over a 20-foot-high masonry dam, once powering 19th-century mills, creating a striking 50-foot-wide waterfall. Nearby, the river drops 12 feet over rocks and boulders to make one of the most significant vistas on the river. For the best views, stroll along the park’s path and enjoy the peaceful charm of this hidden gem.
Reedy River Falls
No hike is required to enjoy this series of waterfalls, which flow down 32 feet, forming the centerpiece of Falls Park on the Reedy, just off Main Street in downtown Greenville. The best place to view the urban waterfall, which fueled the city’s early mills, is from atop the iconic Liberty Bridge, a 345-foot-long cantilevered span supported by a single suspension cable—and the only one of its design in the U.S. You can get a closer look at the falls by strolling through the park itself, landscaped with shaded pathways and lush gardens.

A Taste of the Eugenia Duke Mayo Trail
Follow Eugenia Duke’s Unofficial Mayo Guide to Greenville on a delectable quest, packed with 20 stops that’ll slather your taste buds with creamy Duke’s Mayo and treat you to a side of history.
How it All Began
After the U.S. entered WWI, Greenville housewife Eugenia Duke decided to help with the war effort by making classic Southern sandwiches to sell to soldiers training at nearby Camp Sevier. Demand for Duke’s sandwiches— spread with her tangy homemade mayonnaise—grew. Duke formed her own company and began bottling her mayonnaise in downtown Greenville at the Wyche Pavilion, a historical stop on this trail.
Today, Duke’s Mayonnaise—a favorite of Southern chefs—is still made in Greenville using Eugenia’s original recipe.

Outdoorsy vs. Outsidey
Are
you Outdoorsy or more Outsidey? Here’s how to tell:
If you love the idea of a physical challenge that pushes you to your limits for a reward at the end, like a view or a waterfall, then you’re Outdoorsy
If you love a breathtaking view or a stunning waterfall but prefer to take them in just steps from your car because— let’s face it—heat, bugs, and rugged terrain aren’t your thing, you’re definitely Outsidey
We’re all different and there’s no shame in being either, so we’ve got you covered no matter how you want to enjoy nature.
outdoorsy
With ten state parks, hundreds upon hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains all packed into the Upcountry of South Carolina, your to-do list is packed with adventure.
Hike-In Camping
You have two options when trailside camping at Keowee-Toxaway State Park: bring a tent or sleep under the stars in a hammock. Either option is perfect for a digital detox and an escape from the everyday busyness of modern life.
Advanced Trails
Test your mettle on trails like Brissy Ridge—the most technical hike offered at Paris Mountain State Park—or the Table Rock Trail at Table Rock State Park, a 7.2-mile trail considered one of the most challenging in the area.
Lake Mode
When you’ve exhausted yourself on land, take to the water for some relaxing canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Saluda Lake, Lake Cunningham, and Lake Robinson are all excellent options nearby for an afternoon on the water.
Gear Up
Rent a bike or a paddlesport boat, upgrade your tent, or pick up a spare carabiner for rock climbing at Sunrift Adventures in Travelers Rest. Let them hook you up with exactly what you need for your next adventure!
Pictured from top: Table Rock; Paris Mountain State Park; Sunrift Adventures
outsidey

Luxe Lodging
You don’t have to venture far to unwind in nature. Reserve a balcony room at the Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville and you’ll be treated to spectacular views of Falls Park on the Reedy. Steps from Sights
Modern-day living is all about convenience, and experiencing nature in Greenville is easy. Falls Park on the Reedy and Reedy River Falls are must-sees right off Main Street in Downtown Greenville. Enjoy sunset at Furman University Lake (commonly referred to as Swan Lake by locals), mere steps from parking, or pull off to the side of the road for Wildcat Wayside—a beautiful trio of waterfalls where you can admire the lower-most one from the comfort of your car. Better yet, grab a patio chair at Limoncello, BridgeWay Station, or City Scape Winery for sips and serene scenes.
Boat Bliss

The work of internationally acclaimed glass artist Dale Chihuly, this 12-foot-high sculpture in Falls Park on the Reedy honors the memory of Harriet Wyche, who was instrumental in establishing the park.
Octo 2
Towering over the corner of Falls Street and McBee Avenue, Octo 2 relies on wind to power its stainless-steel arms. When the breeze kicks up, the kinetic work, conceived by Washington-based artist Anthony Howe, opens and closes its arms like an octopus.
Dog, Cat & Bird
Boston artist Dale Rogers caught the attention of city leaders after his Big Dog Show placed first in the three-dimensional art category at the 2021 Artisphere festival. Find his whimsical corten-steel design, Dog, Cat & Bird, on ONE City Plaza on Main Street.
Tandem Lovers
Greenville’s Artisphere festival celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024 with the unveiling of this sculpture on Main Street next to Falls Tower. Created by Australian artist duo Gillie and Marc, the work depicts their signature characters, Dogman and Rabbitwoman, riding a tandem bicycle.

Greenville’s music scene is set to explode with the addition of two new venues. Slated to open in the West End in spring 2025, Trueline will contain a 1,700-seat main room and a 400-seat space called The Handlebar, after Greenville’s beloved music venue that closed in 2014. The multi-million dollar AMP project will repurpose the historic Coach Factory next to the Peace Center to create a multi-level, standing-room live music club downtown for hosting national and local acts. Additional plans call for an intimate, lounge-like listening room and a professional recording studio. Tune in to AMP in early 2025.
