13TH BEACH

The world-class food and wine scene of Geelong and The Bellarine is framed by a spectacular coastline and sweeping valleys providing endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Geelong’s north-facing waterfront sparkles against palm trees and yachts, and the heritage bones of the city provide a unique backdrop for shopping, culture and the arts. Drift east, around the peninsula, and you’ll slip into coastal feels, discovering chilled-out towns and breathtaking beaches. For great surf, drop your towel at Barwon Heads or Ocean Grove while St Leonards Pier is a superb spot to snorkel. Tuck into fresh mussels in Portarlington; discover the grandeur and waterways of Queenscliff; and thrill at boats passing through the narrow Heads at Point Lonsdale. Cyclists will love the 35km Bellarine Rail Trail from South Geelong to Queenscliff, and two of Australia’s Top 10 public golf courses are right here. But if you’re just looking for a sheltered spot to relax with a book or wander art galleries and shops, there are many wonderful options. And how about a sea view to pair with your winery lunch? This terroir is made for cool climate drops and about 60 wineries scatter The Bellarine and inland to the Moorabool Valley. The region’s breweries and distilleries are making their mark on the Australian beer and spirit scene too. The You Yangs precinct and Brisbane Ranges National Park are a natural adventure playground where wildlife and endless kilometres of hiking and mountain-biking trails await. Once you start exploring, you won’t want to stop.

DESIGN, CULTURE & THE ARTS

CLEVER & CREATIVE

Geelong is Australia’s only UNESCO City of Design – global recognition of the area’s industrial past and design-driven future. The city’s cultural heart beats in and around Little Malop Street and creativity flows right throughout the broader region culminating in original art, evocative music and grand architecture.

GEELONG ARTS CENTRE

EVENTS

11

GEELONG GALLERY

Brand new and sparkling, the city has recently unveiled the jewel in its crown – the Geelong Arts Centre. This architectural masterpiece is a wonderful place to catch a show, musical or play; or enjoy a comedy act or orchestra performance. Make sure you leave time to walk around and admire all corners of this state-ofthe-art building – the interior of each room is more thought-provoking than the last. Tutti is the centre’s café with Michelin-trained executive chef Nathan Darlington at the helm. Neighbouring Geelong Library and Heritage Centre is also a work of art – a futuristic dome, clad in hexagonal tiles with soaring glass-shard windows. The view from the level five balcony over neighbouring Johnstone Park and Corio Bay is spectacular. Next door, Geelong Gallery is housed within a stately Neoclassical-style 12

building. Established in 1896, it’s one of the country’s oldest regional galleries, with a vast collection of nationally significant works both contemporary and historical. Prized are Frederick McCubbin’s 1890 painting A Bush Burial, and Eugene von Guérard’s 1856 work View of Geelong. Platform Arts run exhibitions, performances and live music at the Old Courthouse building. Down towards the waterfront precinct is the National Wool Museum – a must-see for history lovers. Set inside a charming 1872 bluestone wool store, the museum tells the Australian story of wool, fibre and textiles and hosts art exhibitions. At the top of Geelong you’ll find the Museum of Play and Art (MOPA) where children aged up to seven can let their imaginations run free.

Packed with bright colours, shapes and textures, MOPA allows kids to get hands-on and creative. You'll find it at Geelong’s 160-year-old Wintergarden building on McKillop Street and there's a café on-site. Outside Geelong’s CBD the arts landscape continues, with top galleries dotted across the region. For Indigenous artwork, fare and gifts, Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre is the place to visit. Narana means to ‘deeply listen and understand’ and this award-winning venue is a place to learn about the oldest living culture in the world. Set in native gardens, you can feed Australian animals, explore the playground and enjoy a meal or coffee at the café. At Fyansford Paper Mill you’ll find a community of artists, as you wander in-and-out of studios tucked away on the cliff-edge beside the Barwon River. The site was a paper mill until 1923 but now, the scattering of bluestone and brick buildings house The Papermill Gallery and Provenance Wines as well as shops selling furniture, homewares and handmade jewellery. There’s also a yoga studio and café. While away

an hour or an entire afternoon - a collection of creativity in a surprise location. Tours are run by Fyansford Paper Mills Historic Tours. In Newtown’s buzzing Pakington Street precinct (aka Pako), Boom Gallery exhibits original contemporary art within an old woollen mill. At The Hive in Ocean Grove you'll find art, ceramics and handcrafted furniture from established and emerging artists – many from the region. Downstairs, the bronze sculptures at Willie Wildlife Sculptures have become treasured pieces across the globe, featured in the Singapore Botanic Gardens and England’s Royal Horticultural Society Garden. Queenscliff’s Salt Contemporary Art exhibits Australian painters, sculptors and ceramicists. It’s a beautiful space set across two levels of an old drapery store on historical Hesse Street. If you want a peek into Geelong’s dark past, the old Geelong Gaol offers ghost tours, day and night, and fascinating exhibitions. It housed criminals until as recently as 1991.

BOLLARD TRAIL More than 100 bollards are dotted along Geelong’s waterfront. Artist Jan Mitchell transformed old pier timbers into bright works of art representing characters from Geelong’s history. Stroll past the Botanic Gardens, Royal Geelong Yacht Club, Steampacket Gardens and Cunningham Pier, walking time is approximately 2 hours one way.

WATER & MARITIME

BAY, POOL OR OCEAN

Whether soaking up the feel good vibes that come from being near it, or jumping right in to play, we’re drawn to water, and there are plenty of ways to embrace it.

Let’s start with that coastline. The Bellarine enjoys the best of both worlds, hugging the sheltered sparkling waters of Port Phillip Bay and facing Bass Strait’s surf beaches and salty breezes. It’s sprinkled with little towns that are laid-back in the summer months, perfect for lazy days barefoot with a beach towel over your shoulder or gazing at the water with a bundle of fish and chips in your lap. Swimming beaches can be found at Portarlington, Indented Head, St Leonards, Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. At Barwon Heads the wide, sheltered estuary flanked by sand flats sees the Barwon River flow out to sea forming a playground just made for stand-up paddle boarding, rockpool rambling or building sandcastles. 16

Turn up the dial and follow the roar of the surf to Ocean Grove with its 10km of beach (Main Beach is patrolled in summer). With beautiful clean water protected by a headland, this is one of the best places to learn to surf in Australia. Instructors at Go Ride a Wave, SeaEarth Adventures or Great Ocean Road Surf Tours can get beginners standing up in no time. If your skills are already sound, the swell is at its strongest at Point Lonsdale back beach and Thirteenth Beach, an exposed break near Barwon Heads. Queenscliff has a fascinating maritime history steeped with gripping tales of shipwrecks, rescues and lighthouse emergencies. About 30 ships have met their fate at ‘The Rip’ - the treacherous entrance into Port Phillip Bay from Bass Strait which vessels must pass through

enroute to Melbourne. It’s considered among the most dangerous waters in the world. At Point Lonsdale, the lighthouse is still used for navigation and tours are available. At Queenscliff, the High Light is one of only three black lighthouses in the world. If you linger a while at either beacon, you’ll see ships negotiate The Rip. Fort Queenscliff is a 19th century coastal artillery fort originally built around the lighthouse to protect Melbourne and settlements from invasion. It remains an active defence department site but you can book a guided tour. You can also find interesting relics and displays at the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum.

FESTIVAL OF SAILS Every January, more than 100,000 people drop anchor at the Geelong Waterfront for the Festival of Sails – a worldclass sailing event first held in 1844. Royal Geelong Yacht Club hosts this five-day celebration encompassing racing, live music and the Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race, the oldest sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere.

If you're an eagle-eye for catching fish, the piers at Queenscliff, Portarlington and Point Lonsdale are great for dangling a line in search of whiting, salmon, snapper, flathead or squid. To launch into deeper waters, rent a tinny from Clifton Springs Boat Hire or head out with the likes of Gone Fishing Charters or Queenscliff Fishing Charters and Scenic Tours. In Bass Strait you might even hook a mako shark. Rivers more your style? Enjoy the tree-lined curves of the Barwon River on a kayak or paddle board. Outside Adventures run kayaking lessons and tours. At Geelong Waterfront you can catch views from atop the Giant Sky Wheel, step out on the over-water Wangim Walk or relish in the feel of yesteryear at The Carousel. Eastern Beach is a great place to drift for a few hours, its focal point is a curving Art Deco boardwalk enclosing sea baths with floating pontoons, diving boards and lap swimming area.

CAFÉS, BARS & RESTAURANTS

GET OUT & GET EATING

Geelong and The Bellarine is peppered with fine dining restaurants, hit-the-spot cafés and moody bars. With new places springing up all the time, it’s hard to know where to begin but we’ve listed a few to whet your appetite. Geelong’s options are richly diverse and Little Malop Street is a great place to start. This precinct is jam-packed with bars and restaurants serving up Italian, Greek, Southern American, Asian, Middle Eastern and classic pub fare to tempt your tastebuds. Tables and crowds spill onto pavements, where the street is closed to cars, and a splash of street art spices up the alleyways. This is one spot with a whole lot of energy.

18

THE 18TH AMENDMENT BAR

At The Arborist branches from a large Ash tree frame the building. The rooftop bar is a perfect spot to relax over a cocktail and Middle Eastern share plate. Even meat-lovers will be impressed with the considered veggie dishes and the gluten-free offering is also top shelf. Slink your way up a set of darkened stairs and you’ll enter a portal to 1920s Chicago prohibition days. With the vibe of a speakeasy, The 18th Amendment Bar is the go-to for knock-your-socks-off cocktails and a whole lot of raucous fun. At Sumi you’ll find Asian influenced meals cooked on a bincho-tan barbecue which is part of the dining theatrics. There’s a huge range of Japanese beers and sake on offer too. Located down a lane off Little Malop, Felix has an exceptionally eye-catching interior and a flare for French cuisine – duo of duck anyone? Tucked-away off Geelong’s waterfront is another French offering La Cachette, which means ‘hiding place’. This modern fare moves with the seasons in an intimate bistrot setting. French is also the flavour at Claribeaux – the restaurant at Curlewis Golf Club. It will delight with classics such as steak tartare and chicken cordon bleu. On the waterfront Tempo Kitchen & Bar is the new restaurant at Novotel dishing up succulent local seafood. Wah Wah Gee offers Asian cuisine or if you’re seeking a porterhouse or parmi, hit up Wharf Shed. Maestro is one of the newest restaurants in town run by celebrity chef Adrian Richardson – the master of meat. It's located at the new Holiday Inn & Suites Geelong. 1915 Restaurant is a great reason to visit the Federal Mills precinct in North Geelong, a stone’s throw from where the Spirit of Tasmania docks. The former woollen mill is a cluster of heritage red brick buildings which have been impeccably restored. 1915 serves up modern Australian food with a Mediterranean influence. There’s a stunning mezzanine and rooftop deck, and Anther Distillery is right next door. TEMPO KITCHEN & BAR

THE Q TRAIN

Barwon Edge Restaurant offers Middle Eastern contemporary dining on the Barwon River. Enjoy a meal then take a waterside walk. Not to be outdone, Pakington Street shines – it’s vibrant and multicultural, bustling with impressive restaurants, shops and cafés. Baah Lah! Dining focuses on Singaporean flavours and techniques, a nod to the chef’s heritage. Nearby a top pick is Tulip Restaurant serving up creative seasonal combinations such as kangaroo with oyster mushroom, raisin and coffee. For something a little quirky, Australia’s first cheese train Splatters Cheese Bar run ‘cheese and pilates’ sessions and, if you’re game, ‘all you can eat’ cheese. For your morning caffeine hit head to King of the Castle or if you find yourself on the other side of the CBD snag yourself a seat in the courtyard at Café Go in Bellerine Street. We’re surrounded by water so seafood is big here. If you’re seeking a view try At The Heads – a go-to seafood restaurant which sits over the water at Barwon Heads. In Queenscliff, 360Q overlooks the Queenscliff Harbour or try The Dunes - which is beachside in Ocean Grove. 20

PORTARLINGTON MUSSEL TOURS

Portarlington is the place for mussels. Jump aboard a restored Huon pine boat and pluck your own ‘fresh as fresh’ mussels with Portarlington Mussel Tours, or just sit back and watch the action. You’ll be joined by a mussel farmer, a cook and a deckhand who’ve mastered the art of cultivating and dishing up some of the finest mussels in Australia. The delicacy is also beautifully served at licensed waterfront café Pier Street, which is run by the team behind Melbourne’s popular Noir restaurant. The Portarlington Mussel Festival is held on January 13, 2024. While you’re in town, call in at Portarlington Grand Hotel’s Front Bar. The hotel was built in 1888 and has recently been restored to its former glory. The bar is a luxurious space to soak in its beauty and history and the restaurant offers classic pub fare with a few twists such as beetroot falafel tacos. For something completely different, hop aboard The Q Train and enjoy fine dining with a side of picturesque coastal countryside. The train departs from Drysdale and takes in views of Queenscliff, Swan Bay, grazing horses and olive groves.

KET BAKER

Loosen the belt and take a gastronomic tour guaranteed to excite the heart and appetite. The Bellarine and the Moorabool Valley has an abundance of makers and growers who have lovingly planted, picked and perfected the best things to eat. This food is cultivated in cool climate coastal landscapes, inland hills and volcanic soils journeying from paddock to farm gates, picnic baskets and restaurants. Fresh bread with butter is one of life’s simple pleasures and it would be hard to find a more tasty combo than Ket Baker and Lard Ass Butter, five minutes apart, near Ocean Grove. With top quality fresh produce on hand, it’s no surprise restaurants here champion ‘locally-sourced’ in their menus. White Fisheries is The Bellarine’s hub of seafood, selling catch pulled from the sea that day. If you like fish done differently, visit Bellarine Smokehouse where only salt and smoke are used to preserve their cured and smoked salmon, barramundi, trout, eel and Murray Cod.

SHOPPING

ON TREND

Go roaming and you’ll discover bustling city streets and alleyways, breezy coastal strips, and stylish precincts hidden in historical buildings.

Pakington Street has clusters of eyecatching shops dotted amongst cafés and restaurants at both the Newtown end and the Geelong West end. Jade and May has stunning bedding as well as art and gifts - many made by local creatives. In central Geelong top spots for homewares are Townhouse Living and Empire & Laurel. Treasure hunters can head to The Amazing Mill Markets to trawl its cavernous space for vintage clothing, furniture, books, records and collectables. There are more goodies

to be found at the enormous Geelong Vintage Market, located within the Federal Mills precinct (see p. 19). Seaside towns offer an entirely different scene. In Ocean Grove, The Terrace is the place to go shopping, while in Barwon Heads it’s Hitchcock Avenue. Here surf shops slot between fashion, homewares and jewellery stores such as Kiitos Living by Design. On Queenscliff’s Hesse Street, heritage facades and wide verandahs give Victorian charm to bookshops, galleries, boutiques and cafés. For fashion and home décor in Portarlington visit Mishka + Mikki.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

REFRESH & REWILD

BUCKLEY FALLS

Wooded forests, granite hills and kilometres of winding coastline and rivers set the scene for endless adventures in the great outdoors. For a playground that will keep everyone happy, it’s hard to go past the You Yangs Regional Park, a mass of granite slabs and boulders bubbling up from the Western Plains. Hike its 20km of walking trails (the views from the top of Flinders Peak stretch all the way to Melbourne and Geelong), hang out on rock-climbing routes, or mountain bike 50km of graded, purpose-built tracks. Geelong Adventure Specialists can have you clambering up rock faces - and flying down - among many other heart racing activities. BYO horse for the Western Plantation Area trails. Nine picnic areas are scattered around if you want to make a day of it, and dogs on leads are welcome too. 30

It's important to note that while action and nature abounds in these parts, the You Yangs region 'Wurdi Youang' has been a significant cultural site for the local Wadawurrung people for more than 60,000 years. From the highest peaks, the 360-degree views look over expanses of Wadawurrung Country. The state’s richest wildflower habitat can be found in the hills and gullies of the Brisbane Ranges National Park where plenty more walking trails, from a few hours to three days, await. For a full immersive experience, set up a tent, caravan or camper-trailer amongst the trees at ‘Fridays’ or ‘Boar Gully’ campgrounds. Both are well situated to explore the Brisbane Ranges and neighbouring Steiglitz Historic Park. Cyclists are spoilt for choice. Ride the 20km of paths shadowing Geelong’s picturesque Barwon River (the cascading Buckley Falls are a highlight), hit the Bellarine Rail Trail which runs a scenic 35km from South Geelong to Queenscliff or try out mountain biking at the You Yangs. Cycling Vine Tours will personalise a Bellarine foodie adventure on two wheels for you.

PORTARLINGTON FORESHORE

There’s no doubt water lovers have endless options, from surfing the breaks at Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, to swimming, kayaking, scuba diving and stand-up paddleboarding. See the ‘Water and Maritime’ section for more ideas (p. 16). Children will love the hedge maze and gardens at Barrabool Maze Estate which also has a restaurant on the grounds and resident peacocks. Fairy Park is another fun choice – a medieval theme park set in the countryside at Anakie. Or let them run wild at Victoria’s biggest water theme park, Adventure Park Geelong – the waterslides are brilliant and in the cooler months they host a winter wonderland of snow, lights, fire and ice. If you’re wanting to get a bird’s eye view, Geelong Helicopters offer scenic flights which take-off from the waterfront. Adventure Flight Co. operates from Barwon Heads and offers aerobatic flights and aerial tours. Geelong Ballooning and Liberty Balloon Flights will take you up, up and away.

WONDERFUL WILDLIFE NARANA ABORIGINAL CULTURAL CENTRE

Geelong and The Bellarine is nature’s paradise; its forests, wetlands, sanctuaries and seas are home to an abundance of wildlife. In the woodlands of the You Yangs live kangaroos and birds such as the tawny frogmouth, wedge-tailed eagles, rosellas and honeyeaters. More than 150 koalas live here too. The hiking trails of the Brisbane Ranges also offer a chance to spot koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, gliders and more than 170 species of birds. Swan Bay, Lake Connewarre and Reedy Lake are listed as Ramsar ‘Wetlands of International Importance’, providing habitat for more than 200 birds including the endangered orange-bellied parrot. Head to the viewing platform at Begola Wetlands to spot herons, black swans, wood ducks, swamphens and Latham’s snipe (they fly 8,000km from Japan to get here). Begola means ‘place of many frogs’ in Wadawurrung – you’ll hear banjo, tree and marsh frogs. The 4km sand spit reaching into Swan Bay at Edwards Point Wildlife Reserve is another good place for a walk with the binoculars. 32

13TH BEACH GOLF LINKS

Serendip Sanctuary is a haven for wildlife in the Western Volcanic Plains. Wander 250 hectares of grassy woodlands and wetlands to discover free roaming animals such as kangaroos, wallabies and emus or sit quietly in the bird hide to spot some of the 150 species that visit this critical habitat. At Werribee Open Range Zoo go ‘on safari’, riding in an open bus across the plains (spread over 225 acres) to spot giraffes, elands, ostriches, bisons, white rhinos, hippos and zebras. Enclosures are home to elephants (coming in 2024), lions, cheetahs, gorillas, monkeys and meerkats as well as a few Aussies such as mountain pygmy-possums, koalas and brolgas. A dive into the blue opens-up a whole new world of critters and creatures. More than 80 per cent of the marine life in Port Phillip Bay is not found anywhere else on the planet. St Leonards Pier is

a great place to jump in with a mask and snorkel, its pylons offer shelter for marine life including colourful sponges, fish, nudibranchs, seahorses, and weedy and leafy sea dragons. The wreck of the 1925 paddlesteamer Ozone at Indented Head is another top spot. If you want to go deeper Scubabo run guided dives from Queenscliff Harbour or Bay City Scuba offer pier, shore and boat snorkelling and diving. Sea All Dolphin Swims can get you up-close-and-personal with seals and dolphins in Queenscliff. Tours visit the protected waters of Popes Eye, teeming with marine life, and Chinaman’s Hat where up to 100 Australian fur seals await. Popes Eye is also home to the Australasian gannet, Australia’s largest diving sea bird. Barwon Bluff is one of the best places in the region to see passing whales, June to October.

TIME TO TEE OFF Geelong and The Bellarine is well above par when it comes to golf. Of the dozen courses here, two are rated in Golf Australia's Top 10 public courses and another two make the Top 30. Sandy links with invigorating sea views dominate. You’ll be playing the course of champions when you hit a round at 13th Beach Golf Links at Barwon Heads and it’s home to the Vic Open, one of Australia’s leading golf events, held in February. If you’re looking for a driving range to work on your skills, visit The Range @ Curlewis Golf Club where balls are automatically teed-up after each shot.

SHORT GAME FUN Mini-golf more your style? Children and adults will enjoy Bellarine Adventure Golf. Choose from The Mill course or The Mountain course, both 18 holes and offering exciting games that weave in and around gardens, creeks and waterfalls. A few tricky water hazards and sand traps will keep players on their toes and a little bit of luck will complement whatever skills you’ve got. The mini-golf at The Range @ Curlewis is another fantastic option.

PORTARLINGTON GRAND HOTEL

For a stay that’s right on the waterfront, it’s hard to beat the location of Novotel Geelong. For spacious rooms with bay and city views, consider R Hotel in Bellerine Street or Quest Geelong; while the newly opened Holiday Inn & Suites Geelong in Ryrie Street and the new Quest Geelong Central are both within walking distance of all the main attractions. Timber Door Luxury Accommodation offers high-end stays in the CBD. If you’re in town to catch the mighty Cats in a game of AFL or AFLW at GMHBA Stadium, Rydges is a 15-minute walk and Admiralty Inn is a 10-minute walk. There’s no end of activities to keep kids occupied at holiday parks like the BIG4 Ingenia Holidays Queenscliff Beacon, BIG4 Bellarine Holiday Park and Ocean Grove Holiday Park. For absolute beach frontage, camp at Barwon Heads Caravan Park or Bellarine Bayside - they also have special pods which sleep 2 right at the water's edge. Located in Belmont, Barwon River Holiday Park and Tasman Holiday Parks Geelong are two riverside spots for the whole family to enjoy. If you’re in the market for a caravan pay Prestige Jayco a visit. 36 ACCOMMODATION

Those seeking a romantic getaway should look no further than the stylish cabins at The Woods Ocean Grove, offering a tranquil escape complete with outdoor bath, pizza oven and firepit amongst the gum trees. At The Nest in Point Lonsdale you can laze on the deck, relax in the spa and enjoy the expansive views from the luxury ecocabins. In Werribee book a room at the opulent Mansion Hotel & Spa. When serious pampering is in order, take time-out at Lon Retreat & Spa. It’s tucked away on 200 acres in Point Lonsdale with water and lighthouse views. The signature spa treatment is a soaking tub filled with mineral water sourced from springs running beneath the family-owned farm. Sagres in Queenscliff is a luxury beachside retreat which sleeps up to ten people across three levels. Seaview House in Queenscliff caters for big groups as does Barwon Heads Resort at 13th Beach.

GREATER THAN MAKING THE BED.

SAGRES

Ocean Edge Holiday Rentals have a portfolio of airbnb properties - select from Aussie beach shacks, rooms with ocean views, and pet-friendly accommodation. There’s heritage charm at the Portarlington Grand Hotel, an icon that’s just had an extensive makeover. Of the same vintage is Queenscliff beauty Vue Grand Hotel, built in 1881. At Curlewis Golf Club new, refined and accessible accommodation abounds by the fairways. And why simply visit a winery when you can stay there? The luxury eco villas overlooking the vines at McGlashan's Wallington Estate offer abundant light and space. Mt Duneed Estate offers new accommodation pods, some with outdoor baths overlooking the vineyard. For something a little different, camp among the vines at Bellarine Estate Winery with Coastal Glamp or book Miles Away Shack – a restored beach house original.
