SALTY AND SERENE

WELCOME TO THE BELLARINE The city is home to a growing arts scene, supported by leading institutions and independent operators crafting a reputation through their work.

6

SCUBABO, PORT PHILLIP BAY

Saltwater is a mood in these parts. The smell of the ocean is in the air, everywhere. The spectacular coastline offers some of the world’s best surf beaches as well as a clear, calm bay – it’s a playground made for fun on, under or by the water.

Many of the best places to eat offer water views and the region’s coastal charm has enticed top chefs to put down roots. It’s no surprise restaurants here champion ‘locally-sourced’ in their menus, they embrace what’s on offer in their own backyard. Wine is top of the list there – 40 vineyards are dotted around The Bellarine creating one of the world’s premier grape-growing regions.

GREATER THAN SWIMMING IN A POOL. THE DUNES

The breweries and distilleries are friendly neighbours to the wineries, also attracting international attention. Stroll farmers’ markets or visit farm gates to sample delicious produce grown in this terrain, pick your own berries or take a cooking class to learn how to throw it all together. Portarlington mussels are hometown heroes. They’re celebrated at a festival each January and you can pluck your own year round. The events line-up spans music, literature, film, food and sport. There’s mini-golf and an impressive water theme park plus plenty of blissful ways to relax. Enjoy the sunshine and salty breezes while exploring this beautiful part of the world.

VISITGEELONGBELLARINE.COM.AU

Cyclists will love the 35km Bellarine Rail Trail and two of Australia’s Top 10 public golf courses are right here. The townships are quaint and laid-back, dotted with cafés, provedores and boutiques. You’ll find grand Victorian architecture in olde worlde Queenscliff and thrill at boats passing through the narrow heads at Point Lonsdale.

SCOTCHMANS HILL

GRAPES & GOOD TIMES

The Bellarine is one of the most prestigious wine regions not only in Australia, but the world. More than 40 wineries sit pretty in a tight parcel making it far too easy to hop from one to the next. The wines made here scoop a barrel full of medals every year and a bunch are five star rated by James Halliday. At down to earth, family run cellar doors you’re likely to stumble upon the owner or winemaker (sometimes the same person) who can explain the personalities of their best drops. A selection of the wineries have fine dining restaurants or more simple offerings such as wood-fired pizza. Precise rows of lush vines are impressive but set against the blue backdrop of Port Phillip Bay, they’re magnificent. Designate or book a driver such as Drive Me Bellarine, and wend your way through this wine wonderland.

LONSDALE LINKS

There’s no golf course like it in the world. May well be one of the most fun courses to play Australia-wide with water views throughout. It’s designed as a deliberate throwback to an earlier age – nostalgically challenging. > lonsdalelinks.com.au

PORTARLINGTON GOLF CLUB

It’s near the beach, but it’s not a links; it has beautiful trees, but it’s not a parklands course either. Great combination of challenge and fun for players at all levels. Restaurant on site. > portarlingtongolf.com.au

QUEENSCLIFF GOLF CLUB

Built in 1907 on Swan Island - Australian Defence Force land. The tranquility is only disturbed by the occasional train whistle from the Bellarine Railway. > queenscliffgolfclub.com.au

PUTT PUTT Mini-golf more your style? Children and adults will enjoy tackling the 18-hole courses at Bellarine Adventure Golf. Choose from The Mill course or The Mountain course, weaving in and around gardens, creeks and waterfalls. Keep an eye out for resident cockatoo Simon as well as possums, frogs and kookaburras. There’s a great playground and coffee. The mini-golf at The Range @ Curlewis is another fantastic option. Navigate water, rocks and tunnels as you try your luck on this two-tiered course – go for the glow in the dark balls after sunset. They also have state of the art X-Golf simulators and you can find coffee or all-day dining at Claribeaux restaurant on the grounds. > bellarineadventuregolf.com > curlewisgolf.com.au

OUTDOOR ESCAPADES

FREEDOM AND FRESH AIR

While action and nature abounds in these parts, The Bellarine has been a significant cultural site for the Wadawurrung people for more than 60,000 years. Originally it was called Bellawiyn, which means place of resting by the fire, and cultural sites of significance and shell middens exist along the coastline. Whether you like to experience the great outdoors gently with a walk, or with a shot of adrenaline… say, jumping out of a plane, The Bellarine’s water, land and air are perfect playgrounds for thrillseekers and chillseekers. The region’s many coastal tracks offer world-class bush and beach views – they’re perfect for walking and many are also suitable for bikes – if you’d like a little gusto, rent an electric bike from Bella E-bike Hire.

To get the heart pumping a little harder, Geelong Adventure Specialists can take you rock-climbing, abseiling, mountain biking or hiking. Turn up the dial and parachute through the clouds with Skydive Australia; joy ride with Geelong Helicopters or strap-in for a high G-force aerobatic flight with Adventure Flight Co – loop, spin, roll! Adventure Park is a huge water playground and theme park – arrive early to snag a banana lounge or book a cabana, it’s going to be a big day! The waterslides are brilliant, the adults will have just as much fun as the kids. The season runs from November to March with a winter wonderland of snow, lights, fire and ice held in the cooler months. Calm it down a notch and cruise on the Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway. The train departs from

Point Richards Station and travels through picturesque native parkland, overlooking Portarlington’s beaches. They have an adventure playground, barbecues and picnic tables. For a heritage train experience, jump aboard the Bellarine Railway and journey along serene Swan Bay. Adults can sit back and watch the world go by while kids are busy with the ‘spotto’ activity sheet. This volunteer organisation sometimes runs themed events such as ‘Day Out with Thomas’ and ‘The Polar ExpressTM’.

QUEENSCLIFF GALLERY

THE HIVE

THE ART OF IMAGINATION MUSIC, DESIGN & THE ARTS

QUEENSCLIFF Queenscliff exudes an olde worlde charm that is truly special. Victorian-era architecture has been preserved and meticulously cared for. It’s a place to step back in time as you stroll the foreshore and wide, welcoming streets. You can book in for a Queenscliff Heritage Walk at the Visitor Information Centre. The arts scene here is vibrant. A collection of galleries tastefully showcase works of creatives from the region and beyond. Queenscliff Gallery is cocooned inside an 1869 Wesleyan church which is a work of art in itself. Here you’ll find original prints and works on paper. Salt Contemporary Art is set in a beautiful old drapery store showing creations from painters, sculptors and ceramicists. It’s a light-filled space spread across two storeys with a vine-draped verandah. 30

Queenscliff is also a live music hub hosting the region’s premier music event: the Queenscliff Music Festival. Aussie legends and international bands travel here to headline huge stages, across the last weekend in November. Stop in at beer gardens and cafés to listen to the music of local and faraway stars - the familyfriendly event entwines itself throughout the entire township. Step aboard The Blues Train and you’ll never forget it, never regret it. The adventure starts in Queenscliff with dinner and drinks then all-aboard! You’ll hear four blues bands as you move from carriage-to-carriage while the heritage train journeys along the Bellarine Railway – stopping for more drinks along the way. > qgallery.com.au

OCEAN GROVE & BARWON HEADS At Ocean Grove The Hive showcases bronze sculptures, paintings, ceramics and handcrafted furniture from established and emerging artists – many of them from the region. Downstairs, the bronze works at Willie Wildlife Sculptures have become treasured pieces across the globe, featured in the Singapore Botanic Gardens and England’s Royal Horticultural Society Garden. Art exhibitions are regularly held at the Barwon Heads Arts & Community Hub. They also organise art, singing and floristry workshops and run an annual Bellarine Arts Trail showing off works from local artists at more than forty venues. > bhac.org.au

DRYSDALE Drysdale has its own enclave of talented artists who are keen to teach visitors about their love of all things creative.

Artisans of Australia run art classes and have wonderful exhibitions at their gallery. Hazy Tales offer fun workshops with a few drinks to get your creativity flowing. The welcoming Springdale Neighbourhood Centre is another great option for artistic workshops such as printmaking, sculpture, water colour and life drawing. Drysdale is also home to a special studio where the intricate Bellarine Peninsula Map is crafted. It’s a detailed, hand-drawn and coloured map of the region which took the illustrators years and mountains of persistence to create – the prints and jigsaws make special souvenirs. For live music and shows, check out the line-up at Potato Shed – they host film festivals, trivia and plays too. > artisansofaustralia.com
