INSPIRING ANTWERP: STUDIO FLUIT We met up with the girls from Studio Fluit at Me & My Monkey(7), a cozy coffee shop over at Oever 18. Naomi and Eva took the time to tell us all about their work, their inspiration behind this issue’s cover design and – of course – their love of Antwerp. WHO IS STUDIO FLUIT AND HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

Eva: “We all met when we were in school. Naomi and me quickly discovered how well we work together. While still in school, we decided to form the collective Studio Fluit. After a while,

we were joined by Vincent, who had already been freelancing for us on several layouts. We quickly decided that we wanted him to be a part of our team.” Naomi: “We started out with a small booklet, a zine called ‘Oceaan’. We invited a whole bunch of illustrators to send in their work, which we then bundled and sold. The profit we made, went to Sea Shepherd, a charity.” WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME ILLUSTRATORS?

Eva: “I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. So, it came fairly natural to me. It took me quite some time to realize that it is an actual job. For a while I considered studying graphic design, but then I found out you could

Naomi: “For the moment, it’s not enough to make ends meet. I guess that’s normal, since we only graduated last year. But things are gradually improving, as we are reeling in bigger assignments. At the same time we are still learning new things each day. Being a freelancer can be tough, since you have to figure out everything by yourself. All in all, I think we’re doing pretty good and we can’t complain.”

Eva: “Afreux (who designed this very magazine) are very good. We worked with them on ‘Oceaan’. They have a ‘dream’ company. I really envy them…” Naomi: “I love Ward Zwart and Ephameron, who is really important in the Antwerp illustrator scene. She’s a friend of ours.” Eva: “She also organizes Zine Fest, where we can really do our thing.”

utes were a showcase of our work and ourselves, just dancing.” Eva: “When we were asked to talk at INTEGRATED, I got very nervous. I couldn’t handle the idea of talking in front of a thousand people. So we decided to do a performance, dressed up, so that nobody would recognize us. In the end, I was glad we did it. We got some great feedback.” Naomi: “It was a completely different performance than anything else at the festival. Eighty per cent of the audience were students. So instead of talking about our portfolios, we chose to address the school situation. We showed them how sometimes it just takes some time to get there. At one point we were in the other camp! Sometimes, when you’re still in school, or when you’ve just graduated, things can be quite overwhelming. Your fellow students might be doing better than you. But it all worked out in the end for us. It just takes some time…”

11 Naomi: “I did send out some emails in the beginning, but that doesn’t really work. We, for ourselves, don’t get around to answering even half of our emails. I guess the same goes for potential clients. Promoting Studio Fluit through email simply isn’t going to work. Anyhow, most assignments we get, come from people who contact us themselves.” WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF ASSIGNMENT?

HOW IMPORTANT IS NETWORKING AND MAKING THINGS HAPPEN FOR YOURSELF?

Eva: “Most of our assignments just come to us. But we should definitely work on selling ourselves a bit more. We’re just not that good at it. Luckily we’ve had some pretty big assignments, that really stand out. Like the USE IT map or the Kunstbende. People see our work on the streets. And that’s how word gets out about your work, instead of us contacting prospects directly.”

Eva: “The ones for which we get total artistic freedom. Sometimes you just have to follow very strict directions and you can’t really put anything of yourself into a job. That can become a drag. It can make you feel bad, because you get the impression people don’t want your work. They just want you to do something because you have the skills. They could’ve asked anyone…” Naomi: “INTEGRATED certainly was a lot of fun. Eva even did the voices for the animation video. But, indeed, sometimes you get one of those assignments, where you just have to remake an existing image, and it feels horrible because you are copying someone else’s work.”

TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE COVER YOU MADE FOR THIS MAGAZINE.

Naomi: “We thought it would be cool to do something different, rather than repeating clichés. I think the legend of Brabo is really interesting. For those who don’t know the story (see above), it’s a funny one. And, like most legends, it doesn’t really add up. Actually, one of my favourite things used to be to sit on the giant hand on the Meir.” WHAT THINGS COME TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT ANTWERP?

Eva: “The first thing, I guess, would be the cathedral(118). And, of course, the city skyline as seen from Linkeroever (left bank). I like how the city is not too big, but also not too small, it’s just right. I lived in Ghent for a while and I found it a bit too small and too concentrated.” Naomi: “Yeah, and I lived in Berlin, which to me was the opposite: a bit too big. I really like living in Antwerp: it’s a beautiful place and there’s a lot to do.” WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU DURING THE WINTERTIME?

Eva: “We’ll be in a cosy coffee bar, like this one, drinking hot coco.” Naomi: (laughs) “Yeah, me too! I also like my hot coco with whipped cream.” Eva: “I always like going to the movies at UGC (115). I have a year pass there and I try to go about three times a month. I also enjoy going to Cinema Zuid (114), but it’s been a while now. It really depends on the films they are showing.”

For this edition of This Is Antwerp I met up with Dorien Waterschoot (23). Dorien is an upcoming stylist who has lived in Antwerp for five years. It all started when she got a job at Forever 21 (45) as a stylist and discovered she was actually really good at it. She met photographer Frédéric Bastin who took her on a trip to Barcelona to work on a shoot and it wasn’t long before big clients like Hair by Van Loenhout (122) and REDKEN asked her to style their collections. She even styled a billboard campaign for

Marlboro Cigarettes with photographer Guillaume Kayancan. It’s hard to describe her style in one word: she loves to work with ethnic elements, prints and lots of colour. But what we like most about her work is that she often works with young designers and students from the Fashion Department: Felix Boehm, Lise Eerens, Minju Kim, Clara Jungman Malmquist, Virginia Burlina, Raffaela Graspointer and Yens Cuyvers are just a few of her favourites.

GIGS Papaya Music WHAT? Papaya Music is a fairly new concert organization, with only one show under its belt so far. They set up shows featuring both international and local talent. Although they have a slight preference for alternative and indie music, they don’t want to pin themselves to a particular genre. FOR WHOM? Lovers of less-than-obvious music. WHEN AND WHERE? We got the idea from Spaceland (now The Satellite) in LA, where the whole room is draped with silver and blue metallic curtains. WHEN AND WHERE? About every two months they organize a party themselves, but sometimes they get invited to host at different parties. Although they’re constantly on the lookout for new locations, they always bring the typical ClitClap settings: two flags (with logo), plants (really!), a banner and a coloured tube light. DREAM LINE-UP? “Carnage, Hucci, Yellow Claw, Kid Kamillion, gLAdiator and GTA.” HOW DID THEY GET STARTED? “ClitClap started out as an out-of-control birthday party. We tried to organize a small party in the back room of café Multatuli, which has a capacity of about one hundred people. Before we knew it, our party went viral on Facebook and a whole bunch of party people showed up. Multatuli (82) was packed and sweaty. And there were about two hundred more people outside waiting to get in. The cops showed up four times and around 4 am the bar ran out of drinks. So we thought: Damn, people really like this music and we are really having a good time, so why not continue organizing these events?”

• Most stores are closed on a Sunday, expect for the ones in Hoogstraat and Kloosterstraat. • Most stores are closed on holidays like Christmas and NYE (both on Wednesdays) • You often have to pay a fee to use the toilet • A beer or as we say ‘pintje’ will set you back approximately €2 (so don’t get ripped off) • Most museums are closed on Monday • Most markets take place on Friday, Saturday or Sunday (Vrijdagmarkt, Exotic Market, Bird Market,…) • We only have 3 cinemas (maybe 4 again soon) in our city center: UGC (approximately 20 screens), Cinema Zuid (quality programming, re-runs) and Cinema Klappei (a small local theater, re-runs) • Don’t overpay for fries: there are a lot of great frit shops (‘frituur’). Keep it around €2.5 for a big one (without sauce) • We have a pop up culture so check our (free and offline) app to see where the party is at • If you get into trouble (which you won’t) and you need help from the police, medical emergency team or the fire brigade, call ‘112’

HOW TO GET AROUND By Taxi

By Bike

Sometimes it’s easier to use a taxi to get from point A to point B but here are some ground rules: 1) You can’t just waive your arm around and expect a taxi to stop. You have to call one (or use the app) or go to one of the taxi stands. 2) you can fit 4 people in a normal taxi and up to 8 in a van. It’s a lot cheaper to share a cab! 3) You have to pay extra to take a cab at night. Starting rate is €5,45 from 10pm till 6am.

By Public Transportation Antwerp has an extensive network of public transportation (bus and tram). You can buy a single ticket for €2 on the bus or buy one in advance at the machines on the platform. If you are partying the night away on Friday and Saturday you can always take the night buses. They leave at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (at 00:41 am, 1:58am and 3:43am), the Groenplaats (at 00:45am, 2:02am and 3:47am) and from the Rooseveltplaats (1am, 2:15am and 4am).

Biking is always a nice way to explore a city. You can rent a red bike (you see them all over town) with your creditcard in 3 different ways. 1) Go online to www.velo-antwerpen.be and buy a day or week pass. 2) You can call the information desk (+32 (0)3/206 50 30) or 3) You can visit the info desk at Kievitplein 7, 2000 Antwerp (closed on the weekends).
