GIFTS WITH A LOCAL FLAVOUR By Laura Schillemans

The most wonderful time of the year is coming up again. And finding the perfect gift for our loved ones isn’t always as easy as Disney movies make it out to be. Let’s be honest, inspiration does run dry sometimes… That’s why we’ve put together a list with gifts that are as useful as they are affectionate. They’re all made by locals or have an inevitable link to the city we all love (to visit). A nice extra: they transcend Christmas so you can keep the list and re-use it for Valentine’s Day, a birthday or any other random occasion to spread some love. And yes, you can keep them for yourself as well.

Naomi: “For the moment, it’s not enough to make ends meet. I guess that’s normal, since we only graduated last year. But things are gradually improving, as we are reeling in bigger assignments. So we decided to do a performance, dressed up, so that nobody would recognize us. In the end, I was glad we did it. We got some great feedback.” Naomi: “It was a completely different performance than anything else at the festival. Eighty per cent of the audience were students. So instead of talking about our portfolios, we chose to address the school situation. We showed them how sometimes it just takes some time to get there. At one point we were in the other camp! Sometimes, when you’re still in school, or when you’ve just graduated, things can be quite overwhelming. Your fellow students might be doing better than you. But it all worked out in the end for us. It just takes some time…”

11 Naomi: “I did send out some emails in the beginning, but that doesn’t really work. We, for ourselves, don’t get around to answering even half of our emails. I guess the same goes for potential clients. Promoting Studio Fluit through email simply isn’t going to work. Anyhow, most assignments we get, come from people who contact us themselves.” WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF ASSIGNMENT?

HOW IMPORTANT IS NETWORKING AND MAKING THINGS HAPPEN FOR YOURSELF?

Eva: “Most of our assignments just come to us. But we should definitely work on selling ourselves a bit more. We’re just not that good at it. Luckily we’ve had some pretty big assignments, that really stand out. Like the USE IT map or the Kunstbende. People see our work on the streets. And that’s how word gets out about your work, instead of us contacting prospects directly.”

Eva: “The ones for which we get total artistic freedom. Sometimes you just have to follow very strict directions and you can’t really put anything of yourself into a job. That can become a drag. It can make you feel bad, because you get the impression people don’t want your work. They just want you to do something because you have the skills. They could’ve asked anyone…” Naomi: “INTEGRATED certainly was a lot of fun. Eva even did the voices for the animation video. But, indeed, sometimes you get one of those assignments, where you just have to remake an existing image, and it feels horrible because you are copying someone else’s work.”

Naomi: “We thought it would be cool to do something different, rather than repeating clichés. I think the legend of Brabo is really interesting. For those who don’t know the story (see above), it’s a funny one. And, like most legends, it doesn’t really add up. Actually, one of my favourite things used to be to sit on the giant hand on the Meir.” WHAT THINGS COME TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT ANTWERP?

Eva: “The first thing, I guess, would be the cathedral(118). And, of course, the city skyline as seen from Linkeroever (left bank). I like how the city is not too big, but also not too small, it’s just right. I lived in Ghent for a while and I found it a bit too small and too concentrated.” Naomi: “Yeah, and I lived in Berlin, which to me was the opposite: a bit too big. I really like living in Antwerp: it’s a beautiful place and there’s a lot to do.” WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU DURING THE WINTERTIME?

Eva: “We’ll be in a cosy coffee bar, like this one, drinking hot coco.” Naomi: (laughs) “Yeah, me too! I also like my hot coco with whipped cream.” Eva: “I always like going to the movies at UGC (115). I have a year pass there and I try to go about three times a month. I also enjoy going to Cinema Zuid (114), but it’s been a while now. It really depends on the films they are showing.”

For this edition of This Is Antwerp I met up with Dorien Waterschoot (23). Dorien is an upcoming stylist who has lived in Antwerp for five years. It all started when she got a job at Forever 21 (45) as a stylist and discovered she was actually really good at it. She met photographer Frédéric Bastin who took her on a trip to Barcelona to work on a shoot and it wasn’t long before big clients like Hair by Van Loenhout (122) and REDKEN asked her to style their collections. She even styled a billboard campaign for

Marlboro Cigarettes with photographer Guillaume Kayancan. It’s hard to describe her style in one word: she loves to work with ethnic elements, prints and lots of colour. But what we like most about her work is that she often works with young designers and students from the Fashion Department: Felix Boehm, Lise Eerens, Minju Kim, Clara Jungman Malmquist, Virginia Burlina, Raffaela Graspointer and Yens Cuyvers are just a few of her favourites.

Antwerp has a rich pop-up culture: stores, restaurants and, of course, parties. In fact, there are probably more pop-up parties than there are clubs in Antwerp. But it’s not always easy to keep track of what’s happening. Reason enough then for This is Antwerp to lend a helping hand. We went out and talked to some interesting people about their party concepts. Time to get to know them, and – more importantly – to know who to follow.

MUSIC

GIGS Papaya Music WHAT? Papaya Music is a fairly new concert organization, with only one show under its belt so far. They set up shows featuring both international and local talent. Although they have a slight preference for alternative and indie music, they don’t want to pin themselves to a particular genre. FOR WHOM? Lovers of less-than-obvious music. WHEN AND WHERE? Based in Antwerp, Papaya works in close cooperation with TRIX (98). Keep an eye on their Facebook page to know when something is happening.

DREAM LINE-UP? “Have you heard of the ‘Le Guess Who?’ festival in Utrecht (the Netherlands)? Well, I guess that might come pretty close to being it…” A LITTLE ANECDOTE? “Finding a new name for an event is always tricky. We came up with names like ‘Kiwi‘, ‘KimJungUn‘ and ‘Ambras‘, but eventually we all thought ‘Papaya’ sounded the best.”

LOCAL PARTIES

ClitClap

NOORD

Kannibaal

WHAT? ClitClap is like a house party but one where they only play trap music. The vibe is positive and sweaty.

WHAT? A nomadic party in the underbelly of Antwerp, exclusively set in venues that have their own story to tell.

WHAT? Kannibaal parties have no rules; they are irregular and disordered. One party might be well organized and set in a certain theme, but the next one could just as easily be the result of a last-minute decision. The organizers used to be a fourman team, but have now downsized to two and a half men. FOR WHOM? Passers-by WHEN AND WHERE? On an irregular basis, at different locations, but always within biking distance of the Turnhoutsebaan, the centre of all things good and beautiful DREAM LINE-UP? “Support by Frank Ocean ft. Mykki

Salton Seizure

Blanco, an intermezzo by Silver Apples ft. Damo Suzuki, while Laurie Anderson is frozen into a block of ice, and the DJ spins records brought by the audience as the main act. Pierre Elitair would close the party with some Puerto Rican-dubbed love songs.”

WHAT? Salton Seizure is a young Antwerp-based

THEY DID WHAT? “We print all our flyers at the office

music organization, always on the lookout for promising local DJs and interesting bands, both national and international. A night typically includes a set by a local band, one international band and three DJs, although not necessarily in that order.

FOR WHOM? Everyone who loves music and is looking for new and exciting finds.

WHEN AND WHERE? Although the first edition took place at Kavka (89), the upcoming shows will held be at TRIX (98). Be sure to check out their Facebook page if you want to know what’s going on.

DREAM LINE-UP? “Well, if we got to pick from international bands, Future Islands, Wolf Parade, Death Grips, Ty Segall and Wolf Alice would be amazing. The ideal Belgian line-up would definitely include BRNS and MEAN.”

HOW DO WE KNOW IT’S A SALTON SEIZURE? “We always bring our shiny curtains. We hang them on the DJ booth and on the stage. We got the idea from Spaceland (now The Satellite) in LA, where the whole room is draped with silver and blue metallic curtains. It creates an inviting atmosphere and adds a bit of life to the otherwise bare and cold venues.” ON THE LINE: HTTP://WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/SALTONSEIZURE

because we have no money whatsoever.”

ON THE LINE: WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/KANNIBAAL.KNBL OR WWW.KNBL.BE

WHEN AND WHERE? About every two months they organize a party themselves, but sometimes they get invited to host at different parties. Although they’re constantly on the lookout for new locations, they always bring the typical ClitClap settings: two flags (with logo), plants (really!), a banner and a coloured tube light. DREAM LINE-UP? “Carnage, Hucci, Yellow Claw, Kid Kamillion, gLAdiator and GTA.” HOW DID THEY GET STARTED? “ClitClap started out as an out-of-control birthday party. We tried to organize a small party in the back room of café Multatuli, which has a capacity of about one hundred people. Before we knew it, our party went viral on Facebook and a whole bunch of party people showed up. Multatuli (82) was packed and sweaty. And there were about two hundred more people outside waiting to get in. The cops showed up four times and around 4 am the bar ran out of drinks. So we thought: Damn, people really like this music and we are really having a good time, so why not continue organizing these events?”

ON THE LINE: FIND THEM ON FACEBOOK UNDER THE NAME CLITCLAP OR ON TUMBLR: HTTP://CLITCLAP.TUMBLR.COM

WHEN AND WHERE? Fairly unpredictable, but mostly in venues in Borgerhout or the north of Antwerp. This year you can enjoy NOORD NYE MELTDOWN at Bar Venetië (79). Keep track by following NOORD on Facebook. MEMORIES? “We cherish the fondest memories of our first parties. They were set, about five years ago, at café Strange (Dambruggestraat), the oldest gay bar in town. Think of a cheesy, ‘80s atmosphere, some nudity, and badly drafted beers from Armand, the bar owner who is now somewhere in his seventies, and who loved the suddenly much younger crowd in his bar. He like! We like Armand!”

ON THE LINE: WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/BERTOLIUS OR AT HTTP://NOORDFEESJES.TUMBLR.COM

Hush Hush WHAT? A party at which the music exceeds the hype, where classics and cutting-edge songs are easily interwoven, where everybody is welcome, where the best DJs are on the bill and where the resident DJs are equally important as the headliners. FOR WHOM? Everyone, though strictly 18+. WHEN AND WHERE? Follow them on Facebook to know where to go. They’ve held editions at the Pekfabriek (92), DE Studio (85), Roxy (94) and Magiq Spiegeltent. DREAM LINE-UP? “As long as our residents Hush Hefner, The Whatevers or TLP bring their blend of old school funk, disco, classics, trap, pop, future bass and ‘90s r&b, it doesn’t matter who else is playing!” OFF THE RECORD? “There are no flyers, no posters, no spam. We keep it Hush Hush, on the down low and on the q.t.. And if you didn’t know, you know now.”

It creates an inviting atmosphere and adds a bit of life to the otherwise bare and cold venues.” ON THE LINE: HTTP://WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/SALTONSEIZURE

Meet the Locals LIVING AND WORKING IN ANTWERP, THEY LET YOU IN ON THE LIFE OF A TRUE LOCAL ‘THIS IS ANTWERP’ IS FOUNDED ON THE SUPPORT OF LOCALS. WE RELY ON A FEW VERY DEDICATED PEOPLE WHO PROVIDE US WITH ALL THE INFORMATION WE NEED TO KEEP THIS PROJECT GOING (YOU CAN LOOK THEM UP ON OUR WEBSITE). AND THESE ENTHUSIASTS ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO GIVE YOU THEIR TAKE ON WHAT THE CITY MEANS TO THEM.

FAMILIAR FACES Name: Cleo Klapholz (24) What do you love about Antwerp? I love how it feels like a small village, even though it really is a huge city! Every time you meet somebody new and connect with them on Facebook, you turn out to have a zillion friends in common. And when you stroll through the streets, you’re certain to bump into someone you know. It feels as if only five hundred people are living here while, in fact, there’s over half a million! Coffee? I’m not really into coffee. I think I’m still too much of a kid to appreciate the bitter taste. But I do love a Chai Latté at MademoiseIle Moustache6 (Paardenmarkt, Antwerp) from time to time. Restaurant? Just recently I asked my brother to scan the Internet for a new place to eat and he came up with the best place ever: Moderato+ 34, a pasta restaurant on the Theaterplein112.

Name: Helen Van den Poel (20) Why do you love Antwerp? Antwerp is a very young and energetic city. There’s always something to do and something new for you to discover. Some of my friends tell me they are in getting bored in Antwerp and they have already seen everything. My advice to them is: go to an area you normally wouldn’t go to and find a new café, coffee bar, club, etc. You’ll be surprised how much more Antwerp has to offer. Museus? Those would be the fashion museum (MoMu 104) and the photo museum (FoMu 99) Tips for wintertime? The Conscienceplein108 is a marvellous place when it snows. And when you’re almost frozen you can go to Comme Soupe16 to warm up (closes in January!). Name: Lucia Adamickovà (27) I love Antwerp because… it’s a small city area-wise, but huge in atmosphere and possibilities.

25 Relax? I relax while staring at the ‘birdy’ wallpaper made by local talent Jasmien Van Hoecke at Palanca9. Dinner? I dig the tasty dishes, but especially the funny names (like ‘Hottest chick in town’) on the menu at Lollapolooza33 (Pelgrimstraat 28). Name: Lara Richir (18) Why do you love Antwerp? Born and raised here, my grandfather loved Antwerp, and I think he passed that love onto me. The city is just big enough if you like being alone for a day, but small enough to run into people on the streets. Eating out? Baked11 for breakfast. They make the most amazeball cake you’ll ever have. For lunch, I like going to Ko’uzi21. They serve great sushi with quinoa. And for dinner, I prefer De broers van Julienne29, because they have the most tasty vegetarian food in Antwerp. Shopping? At The Public Image53 you’ll find affordable and original clothes, right in the heart of Antwerp. It also has an incredible interior, designed by Nick Bal. Name: Tine Van den Poel (20) Gifts? At the Kloosterstraat110 you can find something for everyone’s taste. Especially the new store The Recollection62 is a good tip, so is the Markt van Morgen. Inspiring Antwerp? I have admired the artist Ephameron ever since I was about twelve years old. She creates her own artistic opportunities and also offers a platform to other artists in Antwerp. She has a unique, sensitive style and her eye for the aesthetic is also apparent in her work as a curator. Restaurant? I adore Kaiseki30, the all-you-can-

eat sushi restaurant at the UGC115 cinemas. For a quick snack, the Umi Sushi Bar38 at Groenplaats is certainly good value for money. Name: Laura Schillemans (27) Why do you love Antwerp? To me, the city feels like home and living here lets you experience a multitude of cultures at the same time. Drinks? ViaVia Joker Reiscafe40, because it lets me dream of far and distant travels. Restaurant? A Tavola25 for their ‘vongole’, Ploy Pochana35 for their ‘hoi kratiem’, and Aahaar26 for every bite of Indian food they serve.

EVEN MORE TIPS… Name: Pieter Coolen (35) How long have you been living here? About three and a half years. What do you like about Antwerp? Everything is close by, and it has a rich cultural life and lots of cool places to hang out. Hangouts? For records: FatKat and Tune Up. For drinks: Café Stanny, Venue 21974, Café RoodWit, the Joker73, Café Zeezicht, Korsakov and Cargo Zomerbar in Park Spoor Noord111. Name: Brecht Vandenbroucke (27) Occupation: Illustrator Lived in Antwerp since? Two years. What do you love about Antwerp? My friends and the diversity that the city has to offer. Culture? Go to the MoMu, Cinema Klappei113 (Grind Night) or visit The Bries Space 106. Other hangouts? Bar Leon and Mekanik Strip61, they have a huge collection of books and comics. Name: Liesbet Goedemé (24) Occupation: Owner of Café Cabron66. Why do you love Antwerp? Because of the people that live here. And because it still feels like a village even though it’s a pretty big town. And, of course, because of the stunning architecture. People ought to look up a bit more when they go shopping on the Meir and see the city’s beauty. Restaurant? Jam for breakfast and Fabiola18 for a grilled sandwich Drinks? Bar Leon, Kassa470 and De Pallieter. Tips for wintertime? Come and enjoy the concerts at Cabron! We have a jam session every Thursday, stand-up comedy every first of the month, and fresh soup and darts every day!

Name: Sjoerd Bruil (32) Occupation: Musician How long have you been living here? About ten years, but a friend of mine insists it’s been twelve. What do you like about the city? Though it’s pretty small, there are a lot of record stores and everything is just a bike ride away. There are plenty of bars that are open until the early hours, or just don’t close at all. And I have a lot of colleague-musicians I can jam with. Hangouts? Most of the time I’ll buy my records at FatKat60, have a glass of wine at Café Stanny or drink a beer at café Zeezicht67. If you want to see a good concert, be sure to stop by Stadslimiet95. Tips for wintertime? Drink a hot chocolate at Witzli Poetzli or look for a bar where you can smoke inside (Borgerhout has a few) Name: Lisa (22) Occupation: Student (Architecture) How long have you been here? I grew up in Berchem, but have been living in the city centre for two years now. Hangouts? I love Café Stanny and Eethuis

Royal. Tips for wintertime? Go and take a swim at the Veldstraat125 swimming pool. Name: Julian Tim Kappert (26) Occupation: Co-owner of Bar Nadar65 How long have you been living in Antwerp? Twelve years What do you like about the city? Antwerp has great architecture, good restaurants and a great bar scene. It’s a small city, but just the right size. And it’s close to my

LIFE

hometown Essen, in Germany. Hangouts? Of course Bar Nadar, the quays, Mechelseplein, Café Cabron and Cinema Zuid. Name: Maxim Hectors (27) Occupation: Student in Visual Arts at Luca Arts in Brussels, freelance filmmaker and bartender at Café Stanny. Hangouts? Scheld’apen was like a piece of heaven to me. Now that they are moving and changing their name, I’m really looking forward to the grand opening! I love Witzli Poetzli, to talk and have a drink. Café Stanny is great for dinner and I try to keep tabs on when Otark is cooking. If they organize an event I always try to pass by. Toneelhuis80 and Cinema Zuid for theatre and films, Demian59 for books, Tune Up 63 for records and Atelier Solarshop43 for creative designs. Tips for wintertime? Come on over to Stockholm S.96 at Christmas and dance the night away at Kerstlandschap! Name: Yorgos Tsakiridis (27) Occupation: Musician and professional babysitter. What do you like about Antwerp? There are a lot of wig stores but only few bald people. Hangouts? Cash Converters, Het Echt Antwaarps Theater88, the 1 Euro shop and the basketball field at the SintAnna tunnel. Tips for wintertime? Let’s all come together as one people on NYE and party the night away at the River Scheldt quays.

TIPS TIPS TIPS GOOD TO KNOW

•  Most stores are closed on a Sunday, expect for the ones in Hoogstraat and Kloosterstraat. •  Most stores are closed on holidays like Christmas and NYE (both on Wednesdays) •  You often have to pay a fee to use the toilet •  A beer or as we say ‘pintje’ will set you back approximately €2 (so don’t get ripped off) •  Most museums are closed on Monday •  Most markets take place on Friday, Saturday or Sunday (Vrijdagmarkt, Exotic Market, Bird Market,…) •  We only have 3 cinemas (maybe 4 again soon) in our city center: UGC (approximately 20 screens), Cinema Zuid (quality programming, re-runs) and Cinema Klappei (a small local theater, re-runs) •  Don’t overpay for fries: there are a lot of great frit shops (‘frituur’). Keep it around €2.5 for a big one (without sauce) •  We have a pop up culture so check our (free and offline) app to see where the party is at •  If you get into trouble (which you won’t) and you need help from the police, medical emergency team or the fire brigade, call ‘112’

HOW TO GET AROUND By Taxi

By Bike

Sometimes it’s easier to use a taxi to get from point A to point B but here are some ground rules: 1) You can’t just waive your arm around and expect a taxi to stop. You have to call one (or use the app) or go to one of the taxi stands. 2) you can fit 4 people in a normal taxi and up to 8 in a van. It’s a lot cheaper to share a cab! 3) You have to pay extra to take a cab at night. Starting rate is €5,45 from 10pm till 6am.
