Tip from Simon: A perfect café to visit in good weather, when you won't need to tackle Ijzerlaan the large threshold to get in. Apart from the threshold, the toilet is accessible but rather narrow. This makes it rather tricky to manoeuvre. A good alternative is the toilet at the Hilton, which is also on the Groenplaats.

1 CENTRAAL STATION Koningin Astridplein 27

Het Centraal Station wordt, zeker door de Antwerpenaar, gezien als één van de mooiste ter wereld. Het opende in 1905 en combineert de stalen perronoverkapping en het stenen stationsgebouw in een eclectische stijl. Alleen al de inkomsthal loont de moeite om te bezichtigen. Achteraan het station vind je ook het Comics Station, een indoor pretpark rond populaire Belgische stripfiguren.

Tip van Simon: Alle delen van het station zijn perfect toegankelijk. Wil je de trein nemen als rolstoelgebruiker? Dan moet je minstens drie uur op voorhand reserveren. Dat kan via mynmbs.be of op het nummer +32 2 528 28 28.

Je kan ook altijd om assistentie vragen aan één van de praatpalen in het station.

Vanuit het Centraal Station ga je via De Keyserlei naar de Meir. Daarvoor moet u de Leien oversteken.

CENTRAL STATION Central Station is considered as one of the most beautiful stations in the world, certainly by those living in the Antwerp. It opened in 1905 and the steelwork covering the platform and stone station building are combined in an eclectic style. The entrance hall alone is already well worth a look.

At the back of the station you will also find Comics Station, an indoor amusement park featuring popular Belgian comic heroes.

Tip from Simon: All parts of the station are perfectly accessible. Planning to take the train as a wheelchair user? Then be sure to reserve at least three hours ahead. You can do that on mysncb.be or by calling +32 2 528 28 28. You can also always ask for some assistance using one of the intercom poles found in the station.

Leave Central Station and take De Keyserlei towards the Meir. This involves crossing the Leien.

MEIR De grootste winkelstraat van Antwerpen. De naam Meir komt van het oude ‘meere’, wat meer betekent.

Vroeger was dit een houtmeer, waar hout voor meubels werd nat gehouden. Nu vind je er tal van winkels, toegankelijk voor rolstoelgebruikers.

Antwerp's largest shopping street. Its name Meir comes from the old Flemish world ‘meere’, meaning lake. It used to be a wood lake, where wood destined for use in furniture would be kept wet. These days there are countless shops, offering access to wheelchair users.

Tip from Simon: There are lots of shops on the Meir that are easily accessed by wheelchair users.

2 STADSFEESTZAAL Meir 78

De neoclassicistische Stadsfeestzaal werd in 1908 gebouwd door stadsbouwmeester Alexis Van Mechelen en werd gebruikt voor belangrijke feesten. Nu is het een winkelcomplex van 20.000 vierkante meter met een indrukwekkende centrale hal.

Tip van Simon: De Stadsfeestzaal is voor rolstoelgebruikers volledig toegankelijk. Ook als je niet door de winkelmicrobe bent gebeten, is de Stadsfeestzaal een plek voor jou. Een goede koffie of frisse smoothie zijn een goed excuus om je ogen uit te kijken op de prachtige architectuur.

Tip from Simon: The Stadsfeestzaal is entirely accessible to wheelchair users. Shopaholic or not, the Stadsfeestzaal is a really great place. A delicious cup of coffee or refreshing smoothie are an ideal excuse to take in the magnificent architecture.

Then continue along the Meir and turn left at the Wapper. This is where you can visit the Rubens House. There is also a toilet that is accessible to wheelchair users.

3 RUBENSHUIS Wapper 9-11

De naam geeft het al weg: in de zestiende eeuw was dit de woning van de schilder Peter Paul Rubens.

Maar dit gebouw heeft meer geschiedenis dan die van een schilderswoning. Ooit was het zelfs een gevangenis. In 1937 kocht de stad het huis op en richtte het in als museum. Zo werden twee originele delen van Rubens’ huist bewaard, de tuin en het portiek.

Tip van Simon: De ticketshop is toegankelijk voor rolstoelgebruikers en rolwagens, maar met een manuele rolstoel kan je enkel de benedenverdieping van het museum bezoeken.

De toiletten zijn voor iedereen bereikbaar, maar niet altijd even praktisch. Ook de tuin van het Rubenshuis is toegankelijk, maar let wel op de kasseien. Als de kasseien te moeilijk zijn, heb je gelukkig nog altijd het grindpad om de tuin te ontdekken.

Als je in het weekend in Antwerpen bent, kan je van het Rubenshuis verder naar het Theaterplein.

Daar gaan op zaterdag en zondag de Exotische markt en de Vogelenmarkt door.

Pas op voor de kasseien. Als je van de Wapper naar het Theaterplein gaat, is er wel een strook zonder kasseien voorzien. Gebruik deze voor je eigen comfort.

RUBENS HOUSE The name is a bit of a giveaway: this was the home of the painter Peter Paul Rubens in the sixteenth century. However, the building's history goes beyond simply being the home of a painter. It was also once a prison. The city bought the house in 1937 and turned it into a museum. In doing so, they maintained two original features of Rubens’ home, the garden and the porch.

Tip from Simon: The ticket shop is accessible to wheelchair users and wheelchairs, however, with a manual wheelchair you will only be able to visit the ground floor of the museum. The toilets are accessible to everyone but are not always the most practical. The Rubens House garden can also be accessed, but do watch out for the cobblestones. Fortunately, if you can't manage the cobblestones, there is also a gravel path allowing you to explore the garden.

If you are in Antwerp over the weekend, continue from the Rubens House until the Theaterplein. This is where the Exotic and Birds markets are held on Saturdays and Sundays.

Grote Markt > No Worries / Bar Paniek = 3,5 km

Watch out for the cobblestones. If you go from the Wapper to the Theaterplein a strip has been provided without any cobblestones. It's makes things much more comfortable!

Het tweede deel van de route begint op de Grote Markt.

8 ONZE-LIEVEVROUWEKATHEDRAAL

Vervolg je weg op de Meir en sla linksaf aan de Wapper. Daar kan je het Rubenshuis bezoeken.

Hier is ook een toilet dat voor rolstoelgebruikers toegankelijk is.

The neoclassical Stadsfeestzaal or city ceremonial hall was built in 1908 by the city's architect Alexis Van Mechelen and was used for important celebrations. Nowadays it is a shopping complex covering 20,000 square metres and features an impressive central hall.

Op zaterdag kan je op de Exotische markt lokale en… exotische specialiteiten proeven. Op zondag gaat dan weer de Vogelenmarkt door.

In de dertiende eeuw werden hier postduiven verhandeld, ondertussen vormen vogels, pluimvee en knaagdieren nog maar een klein deel van het grote aanbod dat je op de markt vindt.

Tip van Simon: Het Theaterplein is volledig toegankelijk voor rolstoelgebruikers en zeker de moeite waard om te bezoeken.

Ga via de Wapper terug richting Meir. Daar bots je op het Paleis op de Meir. Het binnenplein is echte eye-catcher.

EXOTIC MARKET & BIRDS MARKET On a Saturday, you can sample some local and more exotic specialities at the Exotic market. On a Sunday this makes way for the Birds market. What started in the thirteenth century as a place to trade homing pigeons is meanwhile a market for birds, poultry, small animals and much more besides.

De Boerentoren, bouwjaar 1931 en met een hoogte van 87,5 meter, was de eerste wolkenkrabber van Europa. Sinds 1981 is het gebouw ook erkend als beschermd monument.

Tip van Simon: De toren zelf kan niet bezocht worden, maar kijk zeker eens omhoog!

Aan de Boerentoren sla je rechtsaf naar de Eiermarkt.

Deze kan je volgen tot aan de Groenplaats, waar de sfeer altijd genieten is.

The Boerentoren (meaning farmers' tower) was built in 1931 and, measuring a total of 87.5 metres, was Europe's very first skyscraper. The building also became a protected monument in 1981.

Tip from Simon: Although the tower is closed to visitors, don't miss looking up!

At the Boerentoren turn right towards the Eiermarkt.

You can follow this as far as the Groenplaats, where there is always a pleasant ambiance.

Tip from Simon: The Theaterplein is entirely accessible to wheelchair users and is most certainly worth a visit.

De Kathedraal is de trots van de Antwerpenaar. Met haar zeven beuken en een hoogte van 123 meter is de Kathedraal het hoogste Gotische bouwwerk van de Nederlanden. Binnen stuit je op schitterende glasramen en meer werk van Rubens.

Tip van Simon: Niet alle delen van de Kathedraal zijn toegankelijk. De crypte, de toren en het orgel zijn voor rolstoelgebruikers onbereikbaar, maar het grootste deel van de Kathedraal gelukkig wel. Heb je dorst, dan kan je naast en rond de Kathedraal in tal van leuke bars terecht voor een verfrissing, van speciaalbieren tot cocktails.

Via de Maalderijstraat zet je je weg verder naar de Grote Markt.

Links van het Stadhuis vervolg je je weg op de Suikerrui, tot aan de Schelde. Het Steenplein en aangrenzende ponton zijn hier de eerste stop. Via een hellende brug kan je tot op het ponton.

Het ponton is dan wel toegankelijk, maar wees zeker voorzichtig bij het betreden. Houd hierbij ook rekening met de weersomstandigheden.

The second part of the route begins on the Grote Markt.

Take the Suikerrui along the left of the City Hall until you reach the river Scheldt. The Steenplein and adjoining pontoon are the first stop. You can go on to the pontoon using the sloping bridge.

The pontoon is accessible, but do take care when you are on it. You should also consider the weather conditions.

CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY Antwerp's locals are proud of their Cathedral.

Featuring seven naves and at 123 metres tall, the Cathedral is the highest Gothic construction in the Netherlands' area. Inside you will discover stunning stained glass windows and more of Rubens' work.

Tip from Simon: Not all parts of the Cathedral are accessible. Indeed, the crypt, tower and organ are inaccessible to wheelchair users, but fortunately most of the Cathedral can be visited. If you are thirsty, there are plenty of nice bars next to and around the Cathedral serving refreshments including some special beers and cocktails.

Je steekt makkelijk over, maar wees waakzaam voor de verkeerslichten die relatief snel terug op rood springen. Neem je tijd om het MAS te bezoeken. Hier kan je ook makkelijk naar het toilet.

Tip van Simon: Aangepaste toiletten vind je ook bij de Bosbar en No Worries, twee gezellig cafés. Hier kan je eventueel ook even stoppen en iets drinken.

Steenplein 21

De naam Schelde komt van het Latijnse ‘scaldis’.

Deze rivier is tot op vandaag heel belangrijk voor de stad. Het ponton aan het Steenplein is een ideale plek voor een picknick of om te genieten van de ondergaande zon.

Tip from Simon: You will also find suitable toilets at the two cosy cafés Bosbar and No Worries. You might also want to stop for a drink.

7 GROENPLAATS

5 PALEIS OP DE MEIR

De Grote Markt is het ideale punt om te beslissen of je de route verder zet of niet. Hier kan je je op een terras zetten, iets drinken, iets eten. Maar je kan evengoed je weg verderzetten en Antwerpen verder ontdekken.

Wat je ook kiest, je maakt sowieso de beste keuze!

Tip van Simon: Het ponton is toegankelijk voor rolstoelen van elk type. Bij goed weer is dit de ideale locatie om even te ontspannen. Bij regen is het ponton echter moeilijk bereikbaar en glad. Let ook op het tij. Laagtij betekend dat de brug behoorlijk stijl is, bij hoogtij ligt de brug veel vlakker. Via meteo.be kan je de getijden volgen.

The Grote Markt is the ideal point at which to decide whether to carry on or turn back. You can stop here and sit on a terrace to enjoy some food and a drink.

Or you can continue to explore Antwerp. Whatever you decide it's a good decision!

RIVER SCHELDT / PONTOON The river's name, Schelde in Dutch, comes from the Latin word ‘scaldis’. This river remains very important to the city. The pontoon at the Steenplein is a perfect place for a picnic or to enjoy the sunset.

9 GROTE MARKT

De Groenplaats is één van de bekendste pleinen van Antwerpen. In het midden van het plein staat het befaamde standbeeld van Rubens, gemaakt door Willem Geefs in 1840.

Het Paleis op de Meir werd in 1741 gebouwd en later opgekocht door Napoleon. Net zoals bij tal van koningen was het paleis ook populair bij de Belgische royalty: Leopold I gebruikte het zelfs als zijn woonplaats.

Tip van Simon: Bewonder de mooie architectuur en bezoek zeker even het middenplein.

Via de Meir ga je verder richting de Boerentoren, ook gekend als de KBC-toren.

Als rolstoelgebruiker is de oversteek naar de Boerentoren zeker mogelijk. Let echter wel goed op, dit is één van de drukste oversteekplaatsen in Antwerpen. Houd het makkelijk voor jezelf door rechts van de verkeerslichten te blijven.

Palace on the Meir The Palace on the Meir was built in 1741 and later bought by Napoleon. As well as being popular with many rulers, the palace was also a favourite among Belgian royalty: Leopold I even chose to live there.

Tip from Simon: Admire the amazing architecture and be sure to visit the central courtyard.

Follow the Meir towards the Boerentoren, also known as the KBC tower.

It is certainly possible to cross over to the Boerentoren in a wheelchair. But do watch out as it is one of the busiest crossing places in Antwerp. Make things easier for yourself by staying to the right of the traffic lights.

Tip van Simon: De Groenplaats is volledig toegankelijk. In het authentieke café De Kroeg (Groenplaats 7) kan je als rolstoelgebruiker makkelijk iets gaan drinken.

Steek via de Jan Blomstraat door naar de OnzeLieve-Vrouwekathedraal.

The Groenplaats is one of Antwerp's most famous squares. In the middle of the square stands the famous statue of Rubens, made by Willem Geefs in 1840.

Tip from Simon: The Groenplaats is entirely accessible. As a wheelchair user it's easy to get a drink in the authentic café De Kroeg (Groenplaats 7).

Go along the Jan Blomstraat to the Cathedral of Our Lady.

9 STADHUIS

Tip from Simon: The pontoon is accessible to all types of wheelchair. When the weather is fine it is the perfect spot to relax for a while. When it's raining the pontoon can, however, be tricky to access and become slippery. Also, watch the tide. The bridge becomes rather steep at low tide and is much flatter when the tide is high.

Het Stadhuis van Antwerpen, in de Italiaanse renaissancestijl, is het toonbeeld van de Antwerpse Gouden Eeuw. Op de Grote Markt staat ook het standbeeld waar de legende van Brabo wordt uitgebeeld.

CITY HALL Antwerp's City Hall, in Italian renaissance style, is the pinnacle of Antwerp's Golden Age. The Grote Markt is also home to the statue illustrating the legend of Brabo.

Tip from Simon: Have a drink in café Den Engel.

It is certainly accessible to wheelchair users, including the toilets. And meanwhile you can enjoy the view across the Grote Markt.

At number 13 on the Grote Markt, you will also find the help desk of Visit Antwerp, which will provide you with any tourist information you may require.

11 INFOPUNT HET STEEN Steenplein

In dit informatiepunt van Visit Antwerpen word je meegenomen op een interactieve reis doorheen de geschiedenis en de toekomst van Het Steen.

Je maakt er kennis met de plannen voor het vernieuwde Steen in 2020.

Tip van Simon: Er is een breed hellend vlak waardoor het informatiepunt makkelijk te betreden is.

Via het brede fiets- en wandelpad langs de Kaaien kan je verder naar het Noorden van Antwerpen gaan. Voorbij de lichten ga je het fietspad op en na enige tijd zie je het impressionante MAS, het Museum Aan de Stroom. Ter hoogte van de SintAldegoniskaai kan je oversteken.

Continue along Sint-Laureiskaai and Bataviastraat to the Rijnkaai. This is where you will find the extremely accessible and interesting Red Star Line Museum.

13 RED STAR LINE MUSEUM Montevideostraat 3

In het Red Star Line Museum ontdek je de verhalen van de miljoenen mensen die tussen 1873 en 1934 in Antwerpen de Red Star Line naar de Verenigde Staten namen. Op zoek naar een beter leven, het beloofde land.

Tip van Simon: Voor rolstoelgebruikers is dit museum volledig toegankelijk. Een echte aanrader, dus. Ook het panorama bereik je makkelijk, gewoon de lift naar boven nemen.

Zowel manuele als elektrische rolstoelen - met standaardafmetingen - passen in deze lift van 90 op 133 centimeter.

Continue along the Maalderijstraat to the Grote Markt.

Follow the Wapper back towards the Meir. You will end up at the Palace on the Meir. The inner courtyard is a real eye-catcher.

The panoramic views are a highlight at the MAS. So head up to the roof (on the ninth floor) and take in the stunning scenery. Take care: on a windy day you are best making sure that everything is wellattached to your wheelchair.

Continue along the wide cycle track and footpath along the Kaaien towards the North of Antwerp.

Once you are past the lights follow the cycle path and after a while you will see the impressive MAS, the Museum aan de Stroom (Museum by the River). Cross over at the Sint-Aldegoniskaai You can cross easily, but be aware that the traffic lights turn red again rather quickly. Take some time to visit the MAS. The toilets are easily accessible.

10 SCHELDE / PONTON

Tip from Simon: All exhibition areas are wheelchair friendly. The lift may only be used under the supervision of a member of the museum staff, but just ask at reception and they will be delighted to help you. Wheelchair users may also go right up to the ninth floor, without a reservation. Again, just ask at the reception.

Accessible toilets are found on the ground floor and first floor.

12 MAS | MUSEUM AAN DE STROOM Hanzestedenplaats 1

Het MAS ligt op Het Eilandje. Dit museum vertelt het verhaal van de haven en van Antwerpen als wereldstad. Bekijk ook zeker de wisselende tentoonstellingen. Daarnaast heeft het MAS ook een uitgebreide collectie, zodat je je hier nooit zal vervelen.

Tip van Simon: Alle tentoonstellingsruimtes zijn rolstoelvriendelijk. De lift kan je enkel nemen onder begeleiding van het museumpersoneel, maar als je de vraag stelt aan de balie, word je sowieso verdergeholpen. Als rolstoelgebruiker mag je ook, zonder reservatie, tot de negende verdieping. Ook hiervoor meld je je best even aan de balie. De toegankelijke toiletten bevinden zich op het gelijkvloers en de eerste verdieping.

Het hoogtepunt van het MAS - letterlijk - is het panoramisch uitzicht. Ga gewoon naar het dak (de negende verdieping) en geniet van een prachtig zicht. Let op: bij winderig weer maak je best alles goed vast aan je rolstoel.

Ga verder via Sint-Laureiskaai en de Bataviastraat naar de Rijnkaai. Hier vind je het uiterst toegankelijke en interessante Red Star Line Museum.

Na een bezoek aan het Red Star Line museum volg je de Kattendijkdok-Westkaai. Hier kan je genieten van de rust aan het water. Als je ondertussen iets wilt drinken, steek je de Londenbrug over, sla je links af naar de Kattendijkdok-Oostkaai en volg je de weg tot aan Bar Paniek. In deze zomerbar geniet van je van het water met een pintje of ander verfrissing. Geniet ervan!

Van oktober tot april is Bar Paniek gesloten.

Maar je kan altijd terecht in café No Worries.

Tip from Simon: This museum is entirely accessible to wheelchair users. So it's really recommended. You can also easily reach the panorama, just by taking the lift. Any standard-sized manual or electric wheelchair will fit in this lift that measures 90 by 133 centimetres.

After your visit to the Red Star Line museum follow the Kattendijkdok-Westkaai. Enjoy some peace and quiet by the water. If you have worked up a thirst in the meantime, cross the Londenbrug, turn left to the Kattendijkdok-Oostkaai and follow the road until you reach Bar Paniek. This summer bar is a lovely place by the water to enjoy a beer or other refreshment. Have fun!

Bar Paniek is closed between October and April. But then just go to café No Worries.
