RESTAURANT & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
Anchorage’s sizzling culinary scene serves up a hearty helping of Alaska-grown ingredients – don’t miss the chance to savor fresh Alaska seafood, wild game, and crisp produce from local farms. Anchorage is among the top cities nationally for coffee per capita, making it a great place to sip. Local roasters have the perfect blend, whether your ideal drink is a mug of black coffee or a double-syrup, half-caff iced macchiato. If a different type of brew is on your mind, check out any of Anchorage's 18-plus breweries, distilleries, and cideries. With pristine glacier water as the main ingredient, beer and spirits here go well beyond ordinary – just like Anchorage itself.
Home to some of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in the United States, Anchorage is packed with mouthwatering cuisine from around the world. Filipino, German, Thai, Indian, Hawaiian, Mexican, and more – no matter what flavors you crave, chances are good you can find them in Anchorage. And whether you’re looking for a food truck or a fine dining establishment, Anchorage has no shortage of options.
SEAFOOD – Alaska has more coastline than any other state in the union, and the waters near Anchorage teem with savory salmon, flaky, fresh halibut, buttery crab, and juicy shrimp. Enjoy seafood chilled, grilled, in chowders, tacos, crisp salads, and more. There’s always something in season.
REINDEER SAUSAGE – In the summer, the spicy scents of succulent reindeer sausage fill the air over downtown Anchorage. Try one smothered in caramelized onions or studded with sauteed pineapple. In the winter, warm up with a hearty bowl of reindeer stew.
– Blueberry patches drape the hillsides, cranberries carpet mountain passes, and raspberries line sidewalks and alleys around Anchorage. Taste them in handmade ice creams and gelatos, sweet jams and jellies, fresh tarts, and a variety of other treats.
– While other yeasts were difficult to ship and store in Alaska’s gold rush days, sturdy sourdough passed the test, making it a statewide staple for years to come. These days, you can find it flavoring crusty loaves of bread and fluffy stacks of pancakes in restaurants and diners around Anchorage.
BIRCH – The slender birch trees feathering Southcentral Alaska produce more than just picture-perfect foliage: They're also tapped each spring to produce a supply of birch syrup, a sweet addition to everything from French toast to candies, marinades, and glazes. Only a few thousand gallons of the syrup are produced annually worldwide; a large portion of it flows from Alaska.

Craft beer meets craft food at 49th State Brewing. Perfected in the shadow of Denali at their location near the national park, 49th State brings favorite recipes to local brewpubs in downtown Anchorage, at the airport, and next to the Alaska Railroad.
The restaurant pours its soul into beer and the best of Alaska into the menu. House-made hefeweizen, inspired IPAs, and peerless pilsners flow from the taps. They’re not flowing very far, either; beer is brewed on-site. And it’s hard to go wrong when the first brewing ingredient is water from a glacier. Known for sourcing Alaska meats and produce, the menu is perfect for a filling meal, light lunch, or snack to balance what’s in the glass.

The names of explorers feature prominently in Anchorage. Captain James Cook’s name graces the body of water flanking the coast of the city and one of the city’s finest hotels. Even Cook’s cohorts gained a level of fame; Fletcher Christian may be best known for the mutiny on the Bounty, but in Anchorage his name is now synonymous with great food in a relaxed atmosphere. Fletcher’s restaurant offers smart appetizers, gourmet pizzas, and hearty dishes that would quell any uprising.
Unwind in the welcoming warmth of an English-style pub. A maritime influence extends to favorite dishes like the seasonal fresh fish piccata and the grilled prawn risotto. However, you’d be missing out if you skipped over the pizzas and sandwiches on the menu. Factor in wine by the glass, fresh microbrews, and cognac, and even famous adventurers will delay their next voyage for another taste.

Great libations and conversations are easy to find in Anchorage. Some say it’s Alaskans’ love of a good time, and some say there’s something in the water. In fact, the city's breweries and distilleries are all working with a superpowered ingredient: the clean, cold, glacier-fed waters of nearby Eklutna Lake. Local brewers say it’s the best water in the world, and it’s a key component of the Anchorage and Alaska beer scene.
Besides this liquid bounty, Anchorage breweries tap into locally sourced ingredients ranging from Alaska-grown grains to wild berries and spruce tips. Be sure to try the signature suds, but make sure you also ask what’s new: Alaskan brewers are innovative and adventurous, and there’s always something brewing behind the scenes.
Or find some spirit – literally. Anchorage’s distilleries bottle classic flavors and some more unusual ingredients, including blueberry, cranberry, fireweed, and ghost pepper, all distilled from local wheat and barley.
Craft brewing in Anchorage got going in the 90s, but really took off in the last decade, with master brewers, ambitious newcomers, and homebrew mad scientists all taking the leap to open new places. Each has their own distinct style and flavor, perfect for sharing with friends old and new.
From pilsners to porters, saisons to sours, no one style holds sway in Anchorage. You’ll find everything from hoppy IPAs to chocolatevelvety stouts. Crisp lagers and sweet ciders refresh under the midnight sun, and hearty ales and dark porters warm winter days.
For true hop heads and ale aficionados, the Alaska Craft Brew & Barley Wine Festival, held in Anchorage each January, features award-winning ales, barley wines, and seasonal brews. Check out other food- and drink-focused events on page 76.
Alaska breweries use local ingredients like berries, fireweed, and spruce tips.
Anchorage is home to 18 breweries and counting, putting Anchorage in the top tier nationally for breweries per capita. More than 40 breweries are spread across Alaska, and most beers can be found on tap in the city.
Seek out a sun-soaked deck, get an industrial vibe alongside fermenting tanks, sink into a comfy leather couch, or be barreled over by reclaimed wood benches and tables. The vibes are as varied as the tap lists. In Anchorage, there's a perfect pint for everyone.
Many breweries also honed the ideal food pairings for their particular brews, either by partnering with food trucks or growing beyond their tap room roots with their own kitchens.

Any mention of brewing must include another Anchorage staple: Coffee. It’s readily available everywhere, with a café or coffee stand on nearly every corner. Some even claim the drive-up coffee hut is a local innovation.
With more coffee shops per person than almost anywhere else in the U.S., Anchorage roasters and baristas take coffee seriously. Let a talented barista whip up a sweet treat or an eye-opening staple to satisfy your caffeine craving. Whether a sludge cup or steamer, latte or breve, you can get your fix any way you want it. From neighborhood hangout, where new friends meet over the cup of the day, to cozy corner café, where good books and warm mugs are the main features, the atmosphere of the place can vary as much as what’s in each cup. And don’t dismiss those drive-up huts, either: The colorful (and colorfully-named) corner stands serve up the best brews for taking out on an Alaska sized adventure.
From cold brew to espresso, the buzz is all about Anchorage.
From Old-World samovar, to loose leaf and chai, Chaga harvested from local birch trees, and even fireweed – Anchorage’s teas infuse ingenuity and the best ingredients. Sample the many eye-opening or relaxing blends in coffeehouses, specialty shops, and markets.
Anchorage knows how to unwind, from free summer shows in Town Square Park to lively midwinter festivals and popular year-round art walks. First Friday events – held on the first Friday of every month – bring the work of local artists to cafes, galleries, bars, and breweries around the city. Throughout the year, catch traveling performers, comedy shows, and live music at numerous nightclubs, pubs, and coffeehouses.
Local theaters host renowned national productions alongside made-in-Alaska plays, and from fall through spring, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts books the best of big name acts and homegrown talent. Entertainment venues feature locallyfamous groups as well as national headline acts, and area museums highlight Anchorage’s cultural heritage, past and present.
Music lovers can find regular live performances at a variety of Anchorage area establishments, and outdoor concerts get your toes tapping and fingers snapping. Celtic, blues, acoustic, R&B, and bluegrass, among others, resonate throughout the city where the scene is as diverse as the Alaska landscape.
Sports fans can catch the big game on flat screens at pubs around town; test your taste buds on five-alarm hot wings or local favorites like halibut cheeks. Leave the remote behind and pick up some tickets for exciting live sports action. Anchorage boasts three semi-pro baseball teams, club-style boxing, a junior hockey team, and the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.
A variety of Anchorage bars and restaurants offer live music and performances highlighting talented local artists. Check out places like 49th State Brewing, The Broken Blender, Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse, and Odd Man Rush Brewing.
In the summer, the spacious front lawn of the Anchorage Museum becomes an outdoor stage for local musicians performing for Lunch on the Lawn, a free midday event combining live music, hands-on family activities, and tasty local lunch menus courtesy of Anchorage food trucks.
Nestled on a tree-lined corner of Fourth Avenue, cozy Peratrovich Park is home to Fridays on 4th – a free seasonal weekly concert series featuring solo and group acts from around the state.
In the center of downtown Anchorage, Town Square Park is the perfect venue for Live After Five, a Thursday evening concert series featuring free performances, a beer and wine garden, and an assortment of tantalizing Alaska treats to fill your belly.
The Summer Concert Series moves around the city as different artists are featured in new venues each week. During June and July, the free concerts showcase local talent at area parks and trailheads.

Anchorage farmers markets have Alaska’s bounty from mid-May through September. Pick up fresh veggies, Alaska seafood straight from the docks, inventive local arts and crafts, and a bite from a food truck all in one stop.
Anchorage Market & Festival
The largest open-air market in the state is a showcase for artists and crafters along with seasonal produce. It also has an extensive array of food trucks and stands.
There’s a farmers market in nearly every Anchorage neighborhood throughout the summer. No matter when you visit, you’ll find local veggies, fresh seafood, handicrafts, food vendors, and maybe even a musical act or two.
A stop at the community garden in the Government Hill neighborhood gives visitors a look at an unusual microclimate orchard of colorful apple, pear, peach, and cherry trees. Don’t miss the Common Ground mural by Linda Infante Lyons, representing the resilience of the residents.
Sometimes the ambiance isn't about the decor, but what's beyond the window. Dining alfresco is the best way to soak in Anchorage's outdoor vibes along with the midnight sun. Share tables amid the city's vibrant murals and public artworks and celebrate Alaska's bounty under its sweeping mountain vistas. The rooftop decks and patios of Anchorage's restaurants provide a perfect place to marvel.

The meal may end, but there’s more to look forward to than an after-dinner mint. The flavors of Anchorage travel well. Here are five of the best ways to savor bites of Alaska, even at home.
FLYING FISH – Ever seen a salmon soar? Local markets and processors can ship Alaska seafood right to your door. Pack up your catch, or select from the catch of the day.
TREE TREATS – Maple may get the glory elsewhere, but Alaskans tap birch trees for syrup. This caramel-flavored concoction goes on more than pancakes.
MEAT ME IN ANCHORAGE – Hot dog carts are an Anchorage staple, and reindeer sausage packed to go is an easy item to take home. You’ll surprise a few friends with this flavor straight from Alaska.
LOCAL BUZZ – Coffee culture is alive and well, and the city's roasters offer up beans ready to help you impart the coffee shop vibe to your kitchen counter.
GROWLERS AND CANS – Canned beer packs light and travels well, so locals love to take it along on outdoor adventures. Those same characteristics make canned Anchorage brews easy to pack up no matter your destination. There’s even a spot inside security at the Anchorage airport that fills growlers to go.
With more than 16 food vendors at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, there’s a menu for every appetite! We invite you to arrive early for one last bite before you go.
