COVER on demand 3D printing The walking tank on the cover isn’t an illustration, it’s a 3D model that has been exported as an object and rendered into a 2D piece of art. 3D printers are small and inexpensive enough to be part of a printers suite of production machines - is there a new horizon for printers beyond brochures. Amazon thinks there’s a market and has started an online ordering service.

Canon’s entry level Océ VarioStream 7170 and 7110

Canon Océ 7110

Canon Océ 7170

Canon US has launched the flash-fusing, toner-based Océ VarioStream 7170 and 7110 specialty print systems following the European launch of the 7170 in Germany in October last year.

path allows the substrate to remain flat throughout the device, enabling users to process special media that cannot withstand paper path deflections or the heat and pressure of normal fusing.

The two new machines are entry-level, continuous feed solutions aimed at corporate and commercial environments with low to mid-range volumes of transaction, direct mail, product instruction collateral and applications requiring special media and suited to short-run printing and quick-change jobs.

The LED image generator will deliver up to 600dpi output with high optical density for professional grade text, graphics and barcodes and fulfills legibility standards for 2D and 3D bar code printing.

The 7170 and 7110 feature automatic paper loading and automatic resolution detection plus simplified set up time while economical first page printing eliminates substantial special media waste over the printer’s lifetime. In addition to standard paper, VarioStream 7170 non-contact flash-fusing technology allows for a wide range of special media applications including adhesive labels, thin paper or plastic ID cards, RFID tags and lightweight forms. The non-contact flash-fusing bonds the toner without heat transfer or exerting pressure with less strain on the paper for finishing. The short and straight paper

The Océ VarioStream 7170 engine is based on the Océ VarioStream family, and equipped with Scaleable Raster Architecture (SRA) controller technology. Designed to operate alongside all other Canon continuous feed printers it can be used as a proofing device and as a backup to other Océ VarioStream systems. The 7170 is available in the US now. A slower speed monochrome version, the Oce VarioStream 7110 system, running at 114 letter pages per minute two-up, has the versatility of the 7170 model with a lower monthly print volume and will be available from September.

Konica Minolta acquires Ergo Asia Konica Minolta has entered into an agreement with Ergo Asia Pty Limited (Ergo), a Sydney, Australia headquartered Asian marketing production management services provider, to acquire all shares. The acquisition is part of Konica Minolta’s business expansion in the production print sector. Ergo’s expertise is in the Marketing Print Management (MPM) services sector that improve

marketing business processes and assist planning and production of value-added products for promotion and marketing purposes. The company has been continuously developing its MPM business across Asia and Konica Minolta intends to add Ergo’s services management knowhow, network and application systems to its suite of products. As a result of the acquisition and along with the acquisition of UK based Charterhouse PM Limited in November 2012, Konica Minolta will be well

positioned to build a system to deliver MPM services for global corporations with offices in Oceania and Asia. Ergo’s customer base will continue to be supported and expanded through the continuing evolution of MPM business. Konica Minolta says the June 11 purchase agreement includes the acquisition of all shares of Ergo, a company that was established in 2004 and has approximately 176 employees.

Electroprint prints Moroccan architecture exhibit on Inca flatbed

Morocco based exhibit display company Electroprint recently showcased their capabilities at Dom&Event, the International Events Exhibition held in Casablanca, by printing a small medieval city with Moroccan architecture on their Inca Columbia Turbo digital inkjet flatbed. Electroprint wanted to introduce a new way of making a large scale, quality exhibit booth that could be produced quickly and installed easily. They used white Reboard, because it is a strong, stable, printable, and environmentally friendly substrate. In deciding what to build for the job, the company took inspiration from their own country, referring to pictures of an old Moroccan city in the southern area of the country known as the “Kasbah”. In architectural terms, a kasbah was a place for the

local leader to live, and a means of defence when a city was under attack. They produced a small, complete medieval fortified city with typical Moroccan architecture, including towers and fountains, fitting a booth space of 9m x 9m with 8m height for the corner towers. With a traditional Moroccan design and architectural look, it came complete with tower lamps, arched entrances, ornate inside walls, ‘wooden’ furniture, and customary artwork on the walls. The company also worked from three-dimensional utilitarian ExpoPrint displays, desks, and literature holders all from Reboard. The principal challenge was to demonstrate that it was possible to produce and install a large booth including furniture and lighting in a very short period of time with a minimum of on-site logistical

complications. For the job, they used an Inca Columbia Turbo digital inkjet flatbed four-colour printer. Electroprint used more than 1000 sqm of 16mm white Reboard printed in high quality mode in less than 2 days (including cutting and finishing). The high resolution of the printer gave Electroprint the ability to reproduce the characteristic textures and natural wall, wood and metal effects. The installation itself took less than one day to build, using only plastic screws to connect and mount the Reboard panels. Electroprint were awarded the prize for the most innovative booth as well as for the most environmental booth plus their efforts also paid off with an Inca IDEAs award in the category of Display Graphics. Judges commented: “Wow, truly impressive amount of print. Full marks for effort and ambition.”

Rollsroller signs agreement on flatbed applicator patent infringement An agreement has been reached between Sweden’s Rollsroller AB and French company GSF in which GSF admits they are infringing the patent belonging to Rollsroller and also compensates them for damages occurred from selling an infringing applicator. Rollsroller supplies and manufactures the proprietary and patented Rollsroller Flatbed Applicator to the sign and printing industry and has more than 3500 installations worldwide. The applicator allows the mounting of large format digital print and self adhesive film to substrates such as acrylic, rigid boards, www.visionmagazine.asia

corrugated plastic, metal plates, banners and glass. Legal counsel for Rollsroller said that the legal patent process had been ongoing for several years and the company will now start action against other competitors who are infringing Rollsroller’s patent. Rollsroller managing director Göran Johansson said that, having invented the technology and invested time and money in developing the product, the company will continue to defend it’s patents.

Stratsys prints 3D headphone and wins award The device also connects wirelessly to the Internet using 3/4G or WiFi, giving users the ability to plug into YouTube and enjoy music from around the world. In abid to receive funding, a 3D printed Audiowings prototype was entered into Sir Richard Branson’s ‘Pitch to Rich’ 2014 competition. It has received the ‘People’s Award’, which includes a prestigious mentoring program from some of the world’s leading business minds. Audiowings is currently finalising plans to enter the retail market.

3D print specilaist Stratasys says that British product design house, Ignitec, has designed and manufactured a new generation of wireless headphones for technology start-up and luxury goods company Audiowings, using its Stratasys Objet30 Pro 3D Printer. Named after the company, Audiowings is a luxury audio headphone that synchronizes directly with online music services, such as Spotify, for cordless listening to their favorite music on-the-go and features a built-in storage system.

Stratasys’ PolyJet-based 3D printing technology features 16 micron accuracy, producing parts that combine high definition with a smooth surface finish, crucial in the development of high quality prototypes. By printing the headphones in a durable rigid opaque grey material (VeroGrey), the look and feel was finalised allowing user comfort to be ergonomically tested. Ignitec’s move towards Stratasys’ PolyJet 3D printing technology aims to increase precision of prototype parts, reduce prototyping costs and development cycle times and is an example of how our PolyJet 3D printing technology allows designers to deliver detailed, accurate and precise prototypes. The company said that, compared to its previous process, finishing time has been slashed by more than half due to the reduction of support material removal required.

EFI Fiery DFEs for new Konica Minolta Bizhub C1085 and C1100 Both 308 and 310 DFEs offer standard and optional job and colour solutions. The DFEs are based on EFI’s Fiery FS100 Pro platform technology - the first and only production platform to achieve a 100% perfect pass rating from industry organization VIGC’s PDF RIP Audit and Industry VDP standards, such as PDF/VT, VPS and the latest PPML 3.0 specifications.

EFI and Konica Minolta Business Solutions USA have announced the launch of a pair of advanced digital front ends (DFEs) for the new Konica Minolta bizhub C1085 and C1100 family of digital presses. The updated EFI Fiery IC-308 DFE and new, high-end EFI Fiery IC-310 DFE are designed for performance, colour quality, end-to-end workflow automation and integration with EFI’s MIS and web-to-print products. EFI says the 310 DFE is designed for accelerated production to the bizhub print engines with Fiery HyperRIP technology that will process individual jobs up to 40% faster than other DFEs by splitting pages with simultaneous multiple processor cores, interpreters and rendering engines. The company says streamlined graphic intensive processing and variable data, hardware and feature set makes the IC-310 twice as fast as the IC-308.

JDF capabilities allow seamless integration with Kodak for PRINERGY and other third party prepress and workflow solutions. Users can reduce touch points and production processes by integrating their DFEs with EFI’s MIS and web-to-print products. The Fiery FS100 Pro platform is the first to achieve a JDF1.3 Integrated Digital Printing Interoperability Conformance Specifications certification from industry organization CIP4. The optional Fiery JobMaster has been designed for automated document preparation and production with intuitive visual tab insertion and design, bleededge and multi-bank tabs, late-stage page editing and numbering, pagelevel ticketing and chapterisation. It is accessed through Fiery Command WorkStation, the central job management interface for Fiery DFEs, along with imposition, colour management and pre and post-flight functions. The new Fiery DFEs are available July 9 from Konica Minolta and authorised Konica Minolta resellerts.

EFI wins troll case against Digitech Image Technologies EFI has announced another key victory in a patent troll case filed against the company. Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit confirmed that a device profile patent asserted by a subsidiary of the non-practicing entity Acacia Research Corporation against EFI and 31 other companies is invalid. Acacia subsidiary Digitech Image Technologies, LLC filed a patent infringement suit in a California federal court in August 2012 against EFI, certain EFI strategic partners and others. In August 2013, the district court invalidated the patent and entered judgment in favor of EFI and the other defendants. Digitech appealed and, on July 11, 2014, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the district court’s decision. The Federal Circuit recognized that the

device profiles claimed in Digitech’s patent were simply “a collection of intangible color and spatial information” and therefore not eligible for patenting. Although Digitech had previously extracted settlements from some companies before the district court’s decision, EFI opposed Digitech’s claims from the start. “The Federal Circuit’s decision confirms what we have maintained from the outset: that the patent is invalid and that EFI and its partners should not have been sued in the first place,” said EFI General Counsel Bryan Ko. “We will continue to fight these kinds of meritless lawsuits in as many courts as is necessary to protect ourselves, our partners and our customers. As we have said before, we will not be bullied into settling abusive lawsuits by patent trolls.” www.visionmagazine.asia

Agfa Graphics' Anapurna prints canvas artworks on Paris’ Panthéon building

Evolution Labels of Brookvale, Sydney has been revealed as the buyer of the first Rapid XL220 digital label press in Australia and, although the announcement was made in May, the customer name withheld at the time for commercial reasons. Evolution Manager Scott Fredman says: “We have been developing a new business concept for the label industry here in Australia and wanted to remain below-the-radar during this phase. We are now ready to roll and the XL220 is central to our vision for on-demand short run, full colour labels printed on-time, with minimum fuss and delivered to trade label printers anywhere. Our primarily trade-only model means that conventional label printers can accept orders for short run quality labels that are not economical to put onto a flexo or offset press, without the need to invest in new plant and digitally – skilled labour.” The Rapid XL220 is an inkjet digital label press with multiple finishing and converting options. It produces full colour labels on a variety of inkjet-receptive stocks, in vibrant colour and with resolution up to 1600 x 1600dpi using the Australian-developed Memjet printheads and inks. The web width is 220mm, traveling at up to 18 metres per minute. The unwind and rewind stations are built to Rapid’s established engineering standards and the base model XL220 has inline die-cutting, matrix stripping and lamination if required. Additional modules that can be added include flexo coating, cold foil embellishing, embossing, slitting and spot coating. An RFID converting station is under development.

EFI Fiery proServer V6 - FAST RIP processes PDFs 7 times faster

Durst have confirmed that its Rho Premium Rigid 30DM, Rho Roll 30DM and Omega 2 inks have been recertified to ensure compliance with the strict Greenguard guidelines on indoor air quality. To obtain Greenguard certification, products must meet chemical emission criteria for more than 360 volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In order to retain this certification, products are regularly retested and verified by the Greenguard Environmental Institute (GEI), which is a cross industry, independent certification organisation. All three of Durst’s inks are also Greenguard Gold certified, making them suitable for use in schools and health care facilities. This level of certification has even stricter, chemical emission criteria for indoor air quality. Anyone using Durst’s Rho printer inks is given the internationally recognised, Greenguard logo so that they are to display their commitment to a sustainable environment.

Lintec Graphic Films to showcase glazing film at London design show EFI has released Fiery Proserver version 6, the latest iteration of its wide and superwide format inkjet solution. Designed for EFI Vutek printers, Fiery Proserver Version 6 is an advanced digital front end system that drives wide to superwide format inkjet printers and features the Fiery Accelerated System Technology (FAST) RIP, which processes PDF files up to seven times faster than previous. EFI says the software is more than a RIP as the Proserver provides a high performance colour management workflow, supports Fogra PSD Print Check and is compatible with more than 540 printers from numerous major manufacturers. The company says it is the first time EFI’s FAST RIP technology has been available to the inkjet production market and the release marks a new age of high performance production front ends for the sign and display graphics market. UK headquartered Lintec Graphic Films plans to displays its latest range of glass film solutions at this year’s 100% Design show being held from 17-20 September 2014 in Earls Court, London. Directly pitched at the architecture and design, retail, Point-of-Sale (POS), leisure and hospitality sectors, Lintec will demonstrate the visual and functionary capabilities of its high quality non-PVC film range, including new heat-absorbent, repositionable and decorative films.

Although the latest version of Fiery Proserver made its debut at the Fespa Digital tradeshow earlier this year FAST RIP, an EFI developed acceleration technology, improves processing for the Adobe PDF Print Engine as well as the Adobe Post Script Interpreter (CPSI). A combination of file compression algorithms and efficient memory management redefines how complex images are analysed. The result is fast PDF processing times, a factor that makes a difference in an industry where a significant amount of signage work consists of single copy jobs.

In recognition of market trends to incorporate glass into architectural design, Lintec has introduced a series of new products to its portfolio saying that all its glazing film products possess green credentials and are easy-to-install and remove. This makes them one of the most flexible elements in a designers toolbox with the capability to install durable designs that can be refreshed quickly and easily.

Proserver 6 has many enhanced features including support for Fogra PSD Print Checks; a dynamic smoothing feature to ensure superior gradient output regardless of the file type or printer used; advanced spot and process colour optimisation to increase colour accuracy and make it easier to achieve precise and predictable prints. EFI has enhanced usability around tiling, making tile mounting faster, more accurate, and more efficient.

Lintec Graphic Films will showcase a range of vibrant and eye-catching applications for windows and glass walls including Vitrocolour: a film that can transform glass into advertising, design and corporate identity opportunities Vitroflip and Vitroshift: to create the illusion of a ‘moving’ image and Dot-on-dot to create different ambiences on the different sides of the glass, making it ideal for office partitions.

In addition, the software’s bidirectional job definition format (JDF) link provides information about the printer status, job status and consumables usage to EFI’s Pace management information system as well as to EFI Digital StoreFront and Online Print Solutions web-to-print software. This allows users to create endto-end, automated workflow that eliminates touch points while improving speed and accuracy.

One of the new products on show is HeatCut, a new, optically clear film that disperses up to 63% of the heat generated by the sun. Applied to windows that are most exposed to sunshine, the film regulates room temperature, assisting with both costs and environmental credentials.

Upgrade to Fiery proServer 6 is available at no charge to all existing proServer customers who have a valid Software Maintenance and Support agreement, or an Enhanced Software Program with Fiery XF coverage, in place. Others can acquire Fiery proServer 6 directly from EFI. www.visionmagazine.asia

IDC Malaysian Enterprise Application software market to accelerate for GST compliance

IDC’s enterprise software forecast for June 2014 showed GST implementation is one of the key drivers for growth in the Malaysian Enterprise Application (EA) market and IDC expects 2014 to be a much better year compared to 2013. This will be a boost to many EA vendors as this forces business to either upgrade or replace their legacy system with a system that is GST compliant. “With GST coming into effect in the early part of 2015, we predict there will be a scramble from the businesses to be fully GST ready in line with government regulations and the implementation will be one of the catalysts for growth in Malaysian EA market for 2014 and possibly in 2015 as well,” says Wong YihKhai, Market Analyst, Software, IDC Malaysia. The latest forecast published in IDC’s Asia/Pacific Semiannual Enterprise Applications Tracker for the second half of 2013 (2H2013) showed the purchasing pattern for Malaysian EA market generally peaks during the second half of the year and 2013 did not prove to be an exception with the market bouncing back from a slow first half due to the uncertainty that surrounded GE 13 in May. Although Malaysian EA market did grow slightly in the later part of 2013 (3.2% revenue growth compared to the first half of 2013), the total revenue for 2013 was slightly lower compared to the total revenue for 2012 (0.4% decline year on year). Total revenue in the second half of 2013 for Malaysian EA market was US$118.7 (RM382,725), representing 50.8% of the total revenue generated in the whole of 2013. This shows that there were some key deals that were closed towards the latter half of 2013, showing a positive sign for the Malaysian EA market. In terms of total revenue in the Malaysian EA market, manufacturing continues to be the biggest contributor followed by retail, communications and media. IDC also forecasts there will be a 6-8% of total revenue growth for Malaysian EA market in 2014 compared to the previous year.

GMG ProofControl 2.1 supports latest ISO standards

Axaio MadeToPrint version 2.6 with CC compatibility

GMG has released 2.1 of its ProofControl colour management software saying that this proof quality assurance tool has been updated to support the latest SWOP and GRACoL profiles, as well as the more defined D50 measurement standard

PDF solutions developer Axaio software has announced version 2.6 of MadeToPrint which introduces compatibility with Adobe’s latest Creative Cloud 2014.

ProofControl is an quality control application that ensures digital colour proofs meet a predefined standard and, when used as part of a colour-managed production workflow, the software is an integral component to help print service providers provide the most accurate simulation against a vast range of international output standards such as ISO, ECI, SWOP and 3DAP, or any user-defined quality standard. When paired with a third-party spectrophotometer (either an external device or the integrated spectrophotometer increasingly found in professional-grade print engines) GMG ProofControl measures the colour output, comparing the result to target values stored within its database. If the measurement readings are within a predefined tolerance, a small adhesive label is printed and fixed (typically) on the back of each calibrated proof, providing a quick visual assurance to all project stakeholders that it has been produced to within acceptance standards. ProofControl v2.1 now includes support for the more tightly-defined, D50based, ISO 13655:2009 standard. Using a measurement device that supports M0 (no UV cut), M1 (No UV cut, D50) and M2 (UV Cut) filter settings, such as the X-Rite EyeOne Pro2, users can select the appropriate measurement parameters when creating either profiles adhering to international standards such as ISO 13655, or to the user’s own unique print standard. The upgrade also includes presets for the new SWOP and GRACoL standards SWOP2013C3 (CRPC5), SWOP2013C5, GRACoL2013 coated (CRPC6) and GRACoL2013 uncoated (CRPC3). These new standards profiles are based on ISO/DIS 15339-2 with its specification of a limited number of Characterized Reference Printing Conditions (CRPC), which are deviceand-process-agnostic colour space references requiring M1 measurement conditions (ISO 13655:2009). GMG ProofControl is available worldwide through GMG’s network of authorised dealers.

The latest version of MadeToPrint Standard can now be run via InDesign keyboard shortcuts for faster handling and improved efficiency. MadeToPrint Auto and MadeToPrint Server feature an improved folder scanning algorithm that handles folders in multiple jobs more efficiently and is now better at resuming handling jobs if the target volume is temporarily not available. Instead of trying once, MadeToPrint will now try several times to write the output file; thus increasing output reliability. While processing books in MadeToPrint Auto and Server a new option allows the separate export of layers. Features, fixes and changes include MadeToPrint Standard is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign, Illustrator or InCopy and an XTension for QuarkXPress allowing manual, one-click, print and export from design documents to one or more output targets. MadeToPrint Auto makes all functionality from MadeToPrint Standard available in a fully automated way using integrated hot folder support. MadeToPrint Server is based on Adobe InDesign Server and can be configured remotely. It guarantees higher reliability, stability and performance of all output workflows in InDesign-based environments. The MadeToPrint Auto and Server versions include connectors for vjoon K4, WoodWing Enterprise, Van Gennep PlanSystem4 and Quark Publishing System and can be integrated with automation systems such as Enfocus Switch. Version 2.6 of MadeToPrint Standard, Auto and Server integrates with editorial systems from Quark, Van Gennep, vjoon and WoodWing and is available immedialtely.

SAi certified for HP Designjet printers

Color-Logic Design Suite now HTML5

SAi has announced the certification of its software solutions by HP for use with the recently launched HP Designjet Z6600 and Z6800 Printers.

Color-Logic, the US developer of the Process Metallic Color System, announced that in August it will convert its Color-Logic Design Suite to HTML5 architecture.

The certification follows extensive testing by HP and applies to SAi Flexi and PhotoPRINT Families Version 11 with Cloud, and Flexi subscription software. The drivers used in this software were tested by HP to its own criteria to assure print performance, printer calibration using on-board printer devices, printer status reporting and job management.

In announcing the conversion company technical representatives said that when the Design Suite was developed it was based on Adobe Flash but, with the move of Adobe Creative Suite to the cloud, it is converting to the latest HTML5 architecture with the conversion expected to be transparent to users.

The two printers are targeted towards large format print providers (one of SAi’s key audiences), graphic designers, professional photographers and fine artists. SAi’s RIPs are especially suited to indoor POP/POS signage and display applications, and trade show graphics. SAi drivers certified by HP support on-board continuous tone and halftone print modules of the printers enabling maximum control over output speed and quality. SAi’s drivers also include HP media profiles for 55 media for the HP Designjet Z6800 Printer and 20 for the HP Designjet Z6600 Printer. The certified drivers are available for users of SAi FlexiPRINT, FlexiSIGN Pro and PhotoPRINT Version 11 with Cloud, as well as to monthly subscribers to SAi Flexi

Developed for brand managers, product managers, corporations and advertising agencies, the Process Metallic Color System simplifies the design and print production process while implementing decorative effects into their branded products and associated collateral. The system is compatible with offset, inkjet, flexography, digital presses, screen printing, and gravure processes making it ideal for packaging, pouches, direct mail, POP/POS material, signage, post cards, literature, booklets, labels, shrink sleeves and calendars. Color-Logic develops colour communication systems and software tool sets for a variety of special effect printing applications and provide decorative effects by utilising the existing workflows of printers and designers, yielding results without the use of special equipment. www.visionmagazine.asia

Home to technology empire Samsung, South Korea has come a long way to evolve from a techcopycat culture, to coming up tops in the world innovation race. Astoundingly, Bloomberg ranked the nation 1st as the most innovative country in 2014, topping even the US. Bloomberg’s list takes into account seven factors: R&D intensity, productivity, high-tech density, researcher concentration, manufacturing capability, tertiary efficiency and patent activity.

South Korea may be the most innovative country of 2014, but offset still rules its print world. Thus far, digital print takes up just 10% of the market share, although rising market demands and trends are driving the digital adoption.

Bloomberg recently ranked the nation 13th on the ‘Best Countries for Business’. In 2013, World Bank ranked South Korea as 7th when it comes to having a favourable business environment. The ranking is the highest achieved by the country. For three consecutive years, the country has a spot in the top 10, a clear indication that South Korea is becoming a business epicentre in Asia. Factors that contribute to the ranking include the fewer days required to start businesses, lower costs to receive construction permits and higher recovery rate of loans defaulted.

“The South Korean print industry is similar to Japan. Although the two countries recognise that digital is important and valuable, they still mostly consist of offset because of the traditional view that offset is standard press,” said Woo Hyuk Jin, production marketing manager, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. Conventionally, South Korea’s print industry takes on a decentralised mode. The various print processes are separated, with different companies handling each stage: “In the US or Europe, most print facilities have been centralised. In Korea however, we will have one company only handling prepress, another prints, and a different organisation doing the finishing. There will even be an agency that only compiles the finished goods to be delivered to the end user. It’s changing a little bit, but generally, printing is still done this way in Korea,” added Woo.

The Beginnings of Digital – Pachinko Digital printing started in the beginning of 2000, but it was not until 2005 that the digital boom began. In 2005, digital printing recorded a staggering 240% increase. The main reason for the growth is attributed single-handedly to the legalisation of Pachinko. Pachinko is a recreational arcade game akin to pinball machines, which is often used as gambling device. The South Korean government decided to legalise Pachinko in 2005, and in order to do so, it needed to recognise the industry to be able to charge taxes. To do so, the government decided to issue coupons, or vouchers, that can be distributed as cash. These coupons have unique barcodes for tracing and to protect copy. This sparked the first movement into digital, when originally offset press companies began purchasing digital printers to be able to print variable data for the coupons. There are over 17,000 printing companies in South Korea, with a recorded annual output value of USD$75 billion in 2011. With 80% market share, the majority of print activity in Korea happens in its capital, Seoul. The print industry within Seoul is divided into 3 areas representative of the Korean print market: Chungmu, Sung Su and Paju. Korea’s movie industry lies in the heart of Chungmu City. Location-wise, this is the centre of Seoul. As the movie industry becomes bigger, the press industry grows along with it, because of newspapers, flyers and marketing collateral. There are 3,000 press companies located within the Chungmu area itself. The Sung Su area is dedicated to commercial and packaging printing only.

www.visionmagazine.asia

Since 2004, the Paju area, located just 30 kilometres from Seoul, has been specially developed for the publishing and press industry. Aptly termed ‘Bookcity’, the area is described as a well-organised, industrial city devoted to the planning, producing and distributing of books by publishing companies. South Korea may be moving forwards on the technological front, but the recent investments in the Paju area proved that print and publishing industries hold importance to the country. China Print also reported that the South Korean government had proposed a plan to invest USD$250 million to establish the Printing Promotion Agency of Korea in a bid to revive the print industry.

“Due to the endorsement of the coupon printing application by the government, many press companies felt ‘safe’ to purchase digital printers. In fact, we sold more than 60 of our Fuji Xerox monochrome printers, the DT6180 and DP180 in 2005 alone,” said Woo. In the same year that Pachinko was legalised, the government suddenly cut the cord to ban it once again. This meant that print companies, which have already purchased digital printers with the sole purpose of printing Pachinko coupons, now have digital machines but no applications. “Fuji Xerox Korea actually advised the customers to send the digital machines to their offset facilities, to print book covers and barcodes. We’re very strong in terms of variable printing, because of our design solution, VIPP (Variabledata Intelligent PostScript Printware),” said Woo.

Key Market Trends

The Rise of Digital Hyunsoomak

3D Printing in Korea

According to Woo, in terms of digital print applications, South Korea is still limited to books, cards, brochures and marketing collateral: “Marketing collaterals take up 40% of the digital print volume. Business card printing has already moved to digital press, and packaging would be next in line.”

A trend unique to South Korea is Hyunsoomak. Hyunsoomak is the Korean term referring to textile banners. The textile banners are often advertising mediums and short-term in nature. The application is incredibly popular in South Korea, as it is one of the most economical visual communication tool and also the most environmentally friendly. Hyunsoomak used to be made by hand and cutting plotters, and now with digital printers.

The South Korean government announced that it is drawing up a 10-year plan to promote and develop 3D printing into a new growth market, and transform the manufacturing sector. A 2012 WOHLERS’ report stipulated that the 3D printing market was worth $3.7 billion in 2011, and predicted the number to increase by 18% each year on average. In 2019, the market is expected to be worth $13.3 billion.

The card industry is massive in South Korea, especially in business and invitation cards. Cards require a wide variety of substrates, and in addressing this market need, Fuji Xerox launched its iGen presses in the last couple of years. “The iGen is easy to operate, and has many specs that are favourable to paper size, thickness and flexibility,” Woo continued. The demand for shorter runs, one-to-one jobs and smaller run lengths are increasing the need for digital printers. Woo observed that in the past, only designers are able to create print-ready files. Advanced online environments, however, has made print-ready capabilities accessible to the layman. “In Korea especially, there are online platforms available to create projects such as personal photobooks, so anyone at all can create print-ready files,” mused Woo. Culturally, most print companies are also family businesses, passed on from one generation to the next. Compared to digital printing, offset has a heavier environmental impact. Due to this, those next-in-line are not as keen to take up the family business. “Sadly enough, today’s generation are not as interested in the print industry, because they consider it a ‘dirty’ industry. To get the next generation interested, the older generations are beginning to invest in digital, which is cleaner technology compared to offset. This is a significant cultural trend that’s driving the digital movement in Korea,” said Woo.

“Digitally printed Hyunsoomak actually started in 1998, when Encad Novajet printers became available in South Korea. Since then Korea has been digitally printing textile banners, without dye sublimation,” said Yoong Lee, vice president and chief operating officer, Roland DG Korea Inc. For Hyunsoomak alone, more than 27,000 units of large format printers that are wider than 42” have sold in South Korea within the last 13 years. According to Yoong, about 12,000 units are Roland printers.

The country’s Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning as well as Ministry of Trade, Industry and energy have been tasked to gather feedback from industry players. In its statement, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning noted that the 3D market is currently dominated by a handful of global companies that own the core technologies. Current plans involve deploying 3D printers at 227 libraries and 5,885 schools in South Korea by 2017, and an ambitious target for 10 million of its citizens to use the printers by 2020.

“In fact, Korean signage is dominated by this application. Overall consumption of this textile media is over 1 billion square metres with 80 tons of inks per month. This is considered a massive consumption, given the size of the Korean market,” said Yoong. “Korea loves this application since it is light, easy to handle and environmentally friendly due to 100% polyester base, and water-based pigment ink is used for this media. Although water-based pigment inks are used, it is a weather-proof application,” Yoong continued.

DST Inkjet head storage fluid Digital Sign Technologies has addressed one of the Inkjet industry’s problems, the long-term storage of print heads. The problem results from a solventbased or water-based flushing solution tending to evaporate over time, leaving the print head nozzles to dry. Dryness obstructs a print head from printing well due to deflected or missing nozzles. This slowdrying fluid was designed to solve this problem. Print heads filled with the Storage Fluid can be stored and shipped without risking any degradation in their performance.

Ontario, Canada headquartered Digital Sign Technologies has released the new Print Head Storage and Intermediate Fluid. Designed to absorb moisture and a great variety of chemicals, this slowdrying fluid is a solution when flushing, storing and shipping Inkjet print heads. www.visionmagazine.asia

One of the properties of the new Storage Fluid is its ability to mix with many different chemicals and absorb them. When filled inside a print head, it removes moisture and any residual fluids from within. It can serve as an intermediate fluid when switching a print head from one chemical to another, for example, when converting a print head from solvent to water-based or UV curable ink. DST recommends using this fluid when changing the cleaning solutions in the Print Head Doctor recovery machines, to prevent unwanted chemical reactions between the solutions inside a machine or a print head.

Epson says that PrecisionCore printheads have ultra-precise core components that underpin its most powerful inkjet printer product and have individually controlled nozzles, each of which is capable of firing up to 50,000 precise ink droplets per second with a high degree of accuracy. This level of precision and performance makes highly sophisticated technology essential for their production. The technology has been developed as a collective designation for thin-film piezo print head technology by combining its core inkjet technology with advanced microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and microfabrication. Epson believes this is an evolving technology that is driving the transformation of inkjet printing. To achieve both high quality and high throughput, Epson employs fully automated production lines that capitalise on Epson’s own industrial robots, as well as a combination of inkjet technology refined over two decades and microfabrication processes that are accurate to one one-thousandth of a millimetre.

modes – Pulsed mode and High Flow mode. TF Technology in High Flow mode ensures continuous ink flow at a high rate directly past the back of the printhead nozzles during drop ejection. This carries away any air bubbles or unwanted particles in the fluid and radically improves production reliability. Alternatively, TF Technology in the new Pulsed mode recirculates ink during non-printing periods only. This ensures that the key reliability benefits of TF Technology can be delivered to customers with minimum cost and complexity. With TF Technology, value-added effects such as printing on transparent or coloured substrates with white ink or adding varnishes are made easy using the Xaar 501. For those not requiring TF Technology, the Xaar 501 operates with standard wide-format graphics ink supply systems. The accurate mounting features on the 501 enable multiple printheads to be rapidly mounted together with minimal adjustment. Industry standard permanent ink connections and simple ink priming ensures that integration to inks systems is clean and easy. The versatile Xaar 501 gives manufacturers considerable freedom to tailor their printer designs. A choice of ink supply options (vacuum controlled and Xaar TF Technology in new Pulsed or High Flow modes) allows OEMs to pick the best solution to fit their application. The Xaar 501 had its worldwide release at the Shanghai International Ad & Sign Technology & Equipment Exhibition held 3-6th July.
