NEW markets Infotrends - profiting through digital décor printing

InfoTrends have completed a study titled Profiting Through Digital Printing in the Décor Marketplace as part of a series of

2 4

research projects that over time will cover the main methods and application of digital technologies for industrial decorative printing. The study recognises that decorative printing has long been a way to provide businesses and consumers with a way to surround themselves with colour rich materials at work, at home, or anywhere that can benefit from innovative architectural and interior design. The need to customise working and living spaces is a powerful driver that spells a wide ranging need for decorative printing in several key applications including ceramic tile, glass, textile, sign and display, laminate, functional, flooring and wall covering. In the past, production methods for decorative elements achieved the desired look and feel using traditional, analogue print processes. Screen, gravure, and lithographic printing have created a wealth of designs, but by their nature they are meant for mass production and cannot efficiently create custom decoration or be cost effective in small batches. Today, after decades of ongoing development and improvements, digital printing is capturing evergrowing production volumes worldwide in a range of décor applications. In this particular study, a series of in-depth interviews and surveys will allow InfoTrends to assess the impact of digital solutions, examine the sentiment of the Architect & Interior design community (A&D), and quantify the opportunity for manufacturers and suppliers of printing equipment and inks, software providers, and service providers.

Project Objectives This study will identify the size of opportunities in digital décor printing, profile the key players and develop recommendations for those that want to build new business lines around these emerging products as well as: Gain detailed insights from the A&D community Awareness/perceptions of digital printing technology and services • Experience with digital & analogue printing for décor • Critical product and service requirements • How digital printing fits into their business Understanding décor producers’ digital requirements and business • Product capabilities • Economics • Analogue vs. digital • Market development support Identify opportunities for technology vendors • Market potential for digital printing (value, volume) • Critical product requirements and equipment and running costs • Critical materials and substrates • Strategies for go-to-market and market development Analysis & Project Deliverables

InfoTrends say that the study will be of benefit to three main interest groups.

InfoTrends will perform an extensive analysis of the research to develop an understanding of the opportunities and issues surrounding ceramic printing.

Equipment Manufacturers as an aid to help understand the market for digital solutions in the décor marketplace, including a range of applications that are growing as A&Ds shift to the use of digitally produced materials.

Subscribers will receive:

Producers of Décor Products to service A&D client needs that are changing faster than ever before and manage their evolving needs and make educated decisions on where and what solutions to invest in next. Architects & Interior Designers who need to address the possibilities for improved design richness, creativity, and environmental impact through the use of digital production technologies. A brochure is available here: http://www.infotrends.com/public/Content/Multiclients/Brochures/ DecorMarketplace.pdf

• An executive Summary addressing key issues, findings, and overall recommendations • A detailed written report with text, charts, and graphs addressing the objectives of the study • PowerPoint slides containing all charts • An overall assessment of addressable décor markets including • Overall market revenues • Estimated digital printing revenues • Market trends • Estimated digital print volume • Webinar presentation of research finding to your team (Optional) • On-site presentation (Optional) • Getting Started

trending now Pantone Fashion Colour Report Fall 2015 Pantone have revealed the Pantone Fashion Color Report Fall 2015, a comprehensive overview of designers’ use of colour in their upcoming collections. Released to coincide with New York Fashion Week, the Pantone Fashion Color Report features the top 10 colours for women’s and men’s fashion for Fall 2015, along with designer sketches and inspiration. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said “The Fall 2015 palette is rooted in multi-faceted, androgynous colours that can be worn to portray effortless sophistication across men’s and women’s fashion; it is the first time we are seeing a truly unisex colour palette.” This Fall, designers pay homage to progressive moments in American history – from the seductive ‘20s to the bohemian hippie and modernists of the ‘60s and ‘70s – while stringing together an affection for colours and styling that are innately easy to wear by both men and women. The importance of neutrals continues to evolve with Desert Sage, a cool and soothing greenish-grey that serves as the ideal neutral across the Fall 2015 palette. Oak Buff is a mellow, comforting and warming shade that brings good feelings. ombine Desert Sage, Stormy Weather and Oak Buff for a look inspired by the flora and fauna of Fall. A lush and elegant teal, Biscay Bay splashes up against more heated tones with its cool touch, combining the serene qualities of blue with the invigorating aspects of green.

The colours featured in the Pantone Fashion Color Report are culled from the Pantone Fashion, Home + Interiors Color System, the most widely used and recognised colour standards system for fashion, textile, home and interior design. Holograms in security printing to grow in 2015 Ian Lancaster, general secretary of IHMA, predicts that niche hologram security printing producers will grow across all markets but those countries with an emerging middle class will probably see the highest. This includes India, where there’s continued expansion of the security print industry with an expected 20% growth. Lancaster said the industry is meeting end-user needs and that holograms are likely to become an intrinsic part of flexible, multi-functional security solutions.

Holograms security printing will grow where there is an emerging middle class - India is expected to grow by 20% The International Holograms Manufacturers Association (IHMA) says the hologram industry is likely to see further growth as the pace at which anticounterfeiting technologies combine to provide multi-layered solutions continues to expand.

An item can be verified as authentic with a well-designed and properly deployed authentication solution, as per ISO’s 12931 standard. Even those that carry a “fake” authentication feature can be distinguished from the genuine item, if that item carries a carefully thought-out authentication solution. Holograms can become an effective counterfeiting weapon with other layered traceable and authentication technologies to battle the trillion dollar a year problem of fake items being produced - representing 5-7% of all global transactions each year. Security applications are likely to remain the most viable for the industry during 2015. However it is expected that holographic optical elements (HOEs) production in lighting displays and the growth of LEDs will stimulate the adoption of holograms due to the better control of emitted, diffused and smooth lighting displays, will also see substantial growth during 2015.

theme PANTONE Reveals Color of the Year for 2015: Pantone 18-1438 Marsala

2

Rich and charismatic, Marsala tastefully fulfills with complex sophistication

PANTONE® 18-1438 Marsala

8

Pantone have declared that Pantone 18-1438 Marsala, a naturally robust and earthy wine red, is their Color of the Year for 2015. “While Pantone 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, the captivating 2014 color of the year, encouraged creativity and innovation, Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

Marsala for Fashion

Marsala for Interiors

Marsala was a hit on the Spring 2015 runways with fashion designers featured in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2015; Daniel Silverstain, Hervé Léger by Max Azria and Dennis Basso incorporated the hue into their collections. The impactful, full-bodied qualities of Marsala make for an elegant statement colour when the colour is used on its own or as a compelling accent when paired with many other colours.

Complex and full-bodied without overpowering, Marsala provides a unifying element for interior spaces. Add elegance to any room by incorporating this rich and welcoming hue in accent pieces, accessories and paint. Marsala’s plush characteristics are enhanced when the colour is applied to textured surfaces, making it an ideal choice for rugs and upholstered living room furniture. Nurturing and fulfilling, Marsala is a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room – making it ideal for tabletop, small appliances and linens throughout the home. The hue will be especially prominent in striping and floral patterns found in printed placemats, dinnerware, bedding and throws.

With the ever-growing popularity of floral prints and striping, variations of this hue will undoubtedly carry into men’s and women’s clothing throughout next year. Marsala is also a popular choice for jewellery and fashion accessories, including handbags, hats, footwear and the burgeoning market of wearable technology. This highly varietal shade combines dramatically with neutrals, including warmer taupes and greys. Because of its burnished undertones, sultry Marsala is highly compatible with amber, umber and golden yellows, greens in both turquoise and teal, and blues in the more vibrant range. Marsala for Beauty An incredibly versatile colour for beauty, Marsala is an appealing and sophisticated shade that’s flattering against many skin tones. Marsala pairs exquisitely with monochromatic mixes of peachy pinks, and sparkles against antiqued gold metallics, offering an assortment of lipstick and blush options. Marsala illuminates a range of smoky-neutral colour combinations, making it a captivating eye shadow colour that can be worn from morning until night. Add an overlay of bronze for a dramatic look that suits any eye colour, or use Marsala as a go-to finishing touch on nails.

Marsala for Graphic Design A rich contrasting colour, Marsala is ideal for use in graphic design and packaging. Eye-catching, but not overwhelming or bright, consumers are immediately drawn to the hue, making it an alluring shade at point-of-purchase. As packaging becomes increasingly more artistic, Marsala will be a natural fit for both high- and low-tech materials, including on-shelf periodicals as well as printed assets, like calendars and stationery. Cross-Referencing to Other Pantone Libraries Pantone 18-1438 Marsala can also be crossreferenced to all other Pantone Libraries, including Pantone Plus for graphic design. Kornit DC Pro water based NeoPigment ink for DtG printing Kornit Digital have developed hardware, software and NeoPigment inks for garment decorators which has enabled the company to create this integrated digital discharge solution - the only industrial solution that combines the advantages of digital printing with a natural feel.

Kornit Digital has launched its new DC Pro water based NeoPigment ink discharge ink for the Kornit Avalanche DC Pro, direct-to-garment printing system. The discharge ink technology, targeted at the garment decorators for the fashion market, allows print onto dark garments without a white layer base, so digitally printed garments have a soft, natural feel when touched.

The new discharge ink is an improved, ready to use version that does not require special handling or mixing, and remains stable in the print-heads for up to a year. The Kornit Avalanche DC Pro has two additional print-heads by which the new discharge ink is applied to bleach the dye molecules of the dark garment, providing a base for CMYK printing, creating a natural feel for the finished product. In combination with the discharge ink, the system can apply flexible amounts of white ink for full opacity control. Support for the new ink will also be available as an upgrade kit for Kornit Avalanche systems with Spectra Nova heads.

Kornit says it’s Avalanche DC Pro is the only industrial solution that provides the user with an array of discharge and white options: it can print CMYK over discharge, CMYK over white, or CMYK over a discharge and white combination. Like all of Kornit’s direct-to-garment printing systems, the Avalanche DC Pro features high productivity, combined with low printing and operating costs and the largest print area in the market at 60 x 90 cm. The Kornit Avalanche DC Pro has been specifically designed for garment decorators looking to utilise digital printing within the high fashion market. Both the Avalanche DC Pro printer and the new DC Pro water based NeoPigment ink discharge ink are available through Kornit’s specialist resellers worldwide.

events Printed Interior Decoration first conference a success

…many successful printers switching to this segment have come forward, revealing that this sector could be as interesting and lucrative as the large format display and banner market today

2 16

T

he first Printed Interior Decoration (PID) conference, an ESMA (European Specialist Printing Manufacturer’s Association) organised event, took place Dusseldorf Germany on the 26th and 27th November 2014 Düsseldorf, with management saying that it is the first European conference to present a holistic view of printed decoration on different materials for walls, floors, textiles and furniture.

solutions. The presenters frequently advised on the right materials as well, and how to handle contractors on site.

This conference gave an overview of the current equipment, materials and printing solutions through the medium of 16 presentations and 4 keynote speakers who addressed the subjects of business models, trends and market information relating to interior design. The conference programme combined technical presentations from suppliers with inspirational presentations from designers who demonstrated their approach to using digital print for decoration.

Euroshop management said that with the increasing importance of e-commerce, it is now all about staging and emotionalising the point-of-sale - a printed interior decoration contributes to this.

Peter Buttiens, CEO of ESMA and event organiser, said: “Looking at the printing market today, many traditional segments are under pressure from competition and this results in lower margins and less work. With a little help and expertise, many of the large format printers can become important suppliers for Printed Interior Decoration solutions. They have the equipment but need to gain some further knowledge and also build a new group of customers and professional partners. Recently, many successful printers switching to this segment have come forward, revealing that this sector could be as interesting and lucrative as the large format display and banner market today”. The conference also showed that entering a different segment of the market, such as the creation of interiors, is not always an easy transition. The construction and the interior design world have their own standards and regulations. But printers quickly recognise that in certain areas they should be the full contractor. A printer providing decorative glass, should work together with a glass fitter to ensure the smooth installation of the decorative glass as doors, walls or windows. It is clear that the right partnerships should be made between printers and contractors for these special interior design

With over 150 participants, the event showcased the growing interest in the sector and its success was further supported by Euroshop, the world’s leading retail trade fair and the wallpaper association.

Fespa also took the opportunity to launch its new project: the Print Inspiration Rally - an American school bus that is fully decorated with print. The next PID show will take place in November 2016 where the conference concept will be developed to mirror the broader potential of the interior decoration market and feature designers, creative developers, printers and suppliers. Heimtextil 2015 final report

M

esse Frankfurt organisers have confirmed that trade fair Heimtextil 2015 has concluded and was one of the most successful in many years, attributable to the wide range of high quality home, contract textile products, designs and equipment showcased by national and international exhibitors. Heimtextil said this was the fifth consecutive increase to the number of exhibitors and permitted visitors an opportunity to scout trends – such as this year’s ethno designs and pale shades, discover innovations and technologies, make purchases and place orders. Visitors came from Britain, Italy and Spain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Japan, USA, Germany - especially Frankfurt. The new ‘Theme Park’ trend and technology lab areas proved popular and highlighted many ways that the wide range of innovative products on offer could be combined with online and offline retail sales.

NEW PRODUCTS Fuji Xerox Color 1000i press with gold and silver dry inks

Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific has launched the Color 1000i Press in Singapore saying it will be available throughout the AsiaPacific region including China. The 1000i, targeted at the high-end professional print market, is the company’s latest production colour press and the industry’s first xerographic production press to offer both metallic Gold and Silver Dry Inks. The new gold and silver dry Inks, developed though the application of the company’s Emulsion Aggregation (EA) technology, are ellipsoid-shaped inks with flat reflective pigments completely covered by toner particles. Orienting the reflective pigment particles in parallel to the print media allows the reflective pigments to reflect light after the image is fused onto the media, thereby achieving a metallic appearance. Furthermore, the reflective pigments do not allow light to pass through, thereby enabling metallic printing on various media.

2 24

With these new Dry Inks, what has been conventionally achieved using offset printing can now be delivered through a single production printer, which improves workflows for printing companies while also contributing to expansion of businesses through widening printing applications with the Gold and Silver Dry Inks. The Color 1000i Press expands print potential on products such as catalogues, direct mails, flyers, postcards and business cards that are usually created using CMYK colours, by creating the option of adding marketing effects to increase the perceived value of prints to give them a sophisticated look or seasonal relevance.

Other features • Inherits the professional functions of the Color 1000 Press, offering print productivity of 100 prints-perminute with media as thick as 350g/m2 • Offers the new capability of printing on dark coloured media • Provides wider offerings of specialty dry inks with the introduction of the newly-developed Gold and Silver Dry Inks —in addition to the Clear Dry Ink already available with the previous model • Comes ready equipped with Full Width Array which automates printing adjustments, such as colour calibration and front and back alignment - reducing operator workload and improving work efficiency in making printing adjustments. • Uses the FreeFlow Print Server and EX Print Server powered by Fiery. The EX Print Server Powered by Fiery enables digital data to be processed at higher speeds than the previous model thanks to the server’s redesigned hardware and software. This ensures faster processing of high-volume and variable data.

D bleached wooden paneling, bronzed iron sheets and cartoon character inspired designs are just some of the creative wallpaper capabilities Xeikon, an innovator in digital colour printing technology, showcased at Heimtextil, the largest international trade fair for home and contract textiles. Following a successful collaboration at several industry trade shows last year, Xeikon is again teaming up with innovative designer Hugo Diego to produce eye-catching tactile designs using the Xeikon Wall-Covering Suite, an allin-one digital solution that produces a finished product.

2

“We are very excited to be demonstrating the commercial and creative flexibility that our presses bring to the market and sharing how innovative designers can use them to develop offerings that stand out in a crowded market. Digital printing technologies from Xeikon allow designers to push boundaries and as such extend their portfolios with high impact and visually vibrant results – all without any compromise in quality,” comments Danny Mertens, Xeikon’s Director Marketing & Business Development Document Printing.

Outstanding quality for ultra-realistic new designs Diego launched his new 2015 Textures collection at Heimtextil, he explained: “What makes this collection very special is that we are introducing for the first time wood and rusted metal textures. We will also be introducing a new set of bricks to complement our very popular red brick texture, and bring back our four very popular stone textures. “All of our textures are in very high resolution with over a billion pixels. They are seamless and repeat every 12 feet (3.66m) which makes us unique compared to anything else available in the market. This enables us to cover large areas while still maintaining a very realistic effect.

26

The Hugo Diego 2015 Textures collection catalogue is available online on http://issuu.com/hugo_diego/docs/2015_textures_collection_-_final_is/1

“We are excited about our ongoing collaboration with Xeikon and the added flexibility it gives us and our customers compared to traditional production processes.” While design is critical, digital print has taken production an evolutionary stage forward by enabling the ordering of panels from 0.91m (3ft) to 3m (10ft) in small quantities, Diego adds: “Without this type of printing capability, this product would not exist at this price point with this flexibility. The Xeikon Wall-Covering Suite of tools open a world of possibilities for any designer. Printing is now a very fluid process in my workflow. I can design a collection of textures, murals or patterns for a client, get prototypes printed that will be exactly what the production model will look like, and go into full production, all in one continuous motion. There is no need to use different machines or different substrates. “Being able to use the same suite of tools for short runs or large productions is a real time and money saver when designing, creating, producing and distributing wall coverings of all types.”

PACKAGING Iggesund challenges designers to improve packaging

2 30

Swedish headquartered Iggesund Paperboard has commissioned the American crowdsourcing company Crowdspring to challenge the world’s designers to improve existing consumer packaging. “Every day we all see examples of packaging that could be improved by a better choice of materials or a better design,” explains Staffan Sjöberg, who is in charge of the project at Iggesund Paperboard.

“Now we’re giving designers all over the world the chance to contribute their ideas on how to replace packaging made of glass, plastic or metal with solutions that use paperboard.” Commercial rights will not be claimed for any of the ideas submitted. The project’s objective is for

designers as a worldwide collective group to steer packaging development in a more sustainable direction. Ideas will be published and may even be reproduced but not exploited commercially.

Color-Logic expands into flexible packaging The core foundation of Process Metallic Color System provides a colour communication system for printing 250 colours on reflective substrates that can be selected from a swatchbook.

Color-Logic’s Process Metallic Colour System, currently being used to produce metallic effects on offset packaging and flexographic printed labels, can now be used on flexible and conventional films, shrink wrap materials and other substrates - permitting the substrate to become a part of the design.

The company says the software, which allows the use of metallic silver inks with CMYK inks and other effects, are pre-built into the palettes and plugins at the design stage. This eliminates the necessity to create a white ink mask when using Adobe Creative Suite and Quark Xpress. Once complete, the design can visualised on-screen, using the Color-Logic FX-Viewer. Designs can be created using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and the Color-Logic system is compatible with offset, inkjet, flexography, digital presses, screen printing and gravure.

Enfocus PitStop 13 with enhanced preflighting each be checked in different ways, depending upon user requirements. The options for customising Preflight are now virtually endless. Users benefit from a much more targeted Preflight check, receiving fewer irrelevant warnings and errors. It also enables the ability to carry out complex quality control routines, thoroughly checking files in one processing pass. Automatic Bleed Generation Enfocus PitStop 13 has been re-engineered to increase its functionality to preflight and correct PDF files, with a major focus the common problem of ‘no or insufficient bleed’. V13 now includes a new option to generate bleed where none currently exists and the ability for users to customise the language and content of the error messaging within Preflight reports, including the use of languages for which the software has not yet been localised. Targeted Checks and Corrections

A major enhancement is the Add Bleed Action, which allows bleed to be generated even if none exists in the original file. The new version works by mirroring the individual objects that are close to or cross a PDF box to create bleed. These mirrored objects are also completely editable so the resulting bleed can also be adjusted manually if necessary. Bleed can be generated for single or multiple objects, as well as complete pages or documents. Customisable Preflight Messages

Preflight Restrictions represents the most significant change to the PitStop Preflight library since it was created 15 years ago. It allows the checks and fixes included in a preflight profile to be limited to certain aspects of a PDF. For example, a PDF page box, a certain page or pages, a particular area or specific elements of a PDF, even different layers within a PDF file can

Warning and error messages can be customised in the Preflight reports, to reflect non-technical language with suggested corrections can be translated into languages that are not currently supported by the PitStop application. Pro 13 with subscription licensing option will be available when PitStop 13 releases in April 2015.

Other enhancements include • PitStop Server CLI can now convert PDF files to images and outputs PNG and JPEG files – ideal for repurposing PDF files or for thumbnail images of PDF files. • The ability to create and edit Action Lists directly in PitStop Server rather than being edited and re-imported. • Customised warning and error messages. A new PitStop configurator – PDF2Image – is installed with PitStop Server, allowing PitStop Server customers with Enfocus Switch (Automation Solution) to create JPEG and PNG images from PDF files. Image output also works with the new ‘restrictions’ concept so only certain selected elements of the PDF can be converted to an image if required. • The Workgroup Manager application for PitStop Pro Floating Licenses gains several new options and now uses a ‘push’ mechanism to reduce the amount of network traffic and improve communication between PitStop Pro and the Workgroup Manager server. • The PitStop 13 release includes new Actions and Action Lists with new and enhanced functionality will also be added to this new version.

All Summa’s flatbed models can be upgraded by updating the software Axis Control to version 3.12 and the firmware to version 17.

With Nexio, a single job can be identified and tagged before being sent into a file workflow, delivering it to a specific printer with certain parameters, for example: quantity, resolution or media.

Mohawk Skytone

This avoids manual intervention and the need to create several hotfolders for each workflow type to save time and minimise errors. Nexio also enables bidirectional communication between the RIP and other software: an ERP, for example, or e-commerce facility, such as Caldera WebShop. This seamless transmission of job information allows managers to introduce new elements, such as validation, log-saving or job ticketing, to improve reporting, device control and communication within their businesses. These reports are central to production performance analysis, fuelling operational development to make wide-format businesses leaner, more environmentally aware and, ultimately, more profitable.

Installation of the roll-up must be through an authorised Summa technician.

Interview with Joshua Harker: “3D printing is not buzz, it is what’s happening”

Inventor

, sculptor, designer, imagination architect, artist and troublemaker Joshua Harker has his finger firmly placed on the pulse of the emerging 3D printing technology. “I’m a 21 century artist, using 3D printing and associated technologies as my medium”, says Joshua, but really, he’s just being modest. His Crania Anatomica Filigre project, a gorgeous ornate 3D printed skull, was Kickstarter’s top funded sculpture project of all time and has become an icon of the consumer 3D printing world. He’s basically the Spartacus of 3D printing revolution. Having been one of the first artists to use 3D printing to bring extraordinary sculptures to the world, Joshua Harker has the valuable insight and, more importantly, the intuition to predict the direction that 3D printing revolution is going to take.

Joshua worked as a commercial sculptor and designer in the toy, invention and design, special effects, and product development industries, but he identified himself as an artist since an early age and sharing his vision with a keen audience has become the primary goal in 2008 when he left his boutique design and development firm to return to art. “My art is about pushing the limits of form… an exploration into what can be made& how to accomplish it. A perfect storm of software, technology & materials engineering all came together that now allows me to create my work 3-dimensionally.” This is where 3D printing comes in and shakes up the world’s senses. “3D printing is not hype or buzz, it is what’s happening now”, insists the pioneer of 3D-printed art and sculpture. “The traditional way of communicating, exhibiting & selling art is profoundly changing & I intend to embrace it.”

JOSHUA HARKER

2

Although the field of 3D printing is becoming more and more populated, as hundreds of new start-ups, artists and business visionaries strive to claim a chunk of the growing market, the threat of competition to someone like Joshua is almost non-existent. Harker’s collection of the “unmakeable” technically complex tangles is the manifestation of the capabilities of this medium, however a risk that Harker sees in the mainstream adoption of 3D technology is the possibility of getting stuck with a copy of a copy of a copy. “Many of us are doing different things, but much of it is mediocre. I see a lot of the math based, parametric & algorithm generative stuff that tends to all look the same.” When asked about the future of 3D printing technology, he breaks into a here-it-goes-again grin: “It changes so fast that we can hardly predict what will happen in a couple of years. Besides the ground-breaking applications

in medicine, I believe it has the potential to make us more independent and to free us from this provider/consumer product grid. It will move more firmly into the manufacturing sector from the design realm that it’s in now. I expect further developments in weaponisation as well. It will be adopted by an increasing number of industries as well (fashion, construction, food, pharmaceuticals, etc). I see haute couture becoming increasingly accessible... personalised/custom fitted everything will become the norm. It’s up to us to make use of it in a productive & responsible way rather than building guns, drones and garbage... It’s all about vision.” With the advent of 3D printing technology, we are able to do things that have never crossed our minds before and that is fantastic, yet Harker thinks the medium is not necessarily for everyone, as “it’s just a tool”. Having broken into the industry through a crowdsourcing platform,

the artist believes in the power of community that 3D printing creates by allowing us to participate more directly in the way things are created and used. Thanks to the advancements in technology, his visions are now able to be realized sculpturally and shared through social media and such platforms as Kickstarter with a much wider range of people than if it was confined to a private gallery. Paradoxically, Harker confessed he doesn’t own a desktop 3D printer and doesn’t really need one... A bike mount was the only thing he’s ever tried to 3D print. Yet, given the amount of artsy project ideas cooking in his head, it is no wonder the artist spends more time reshaping and rethinking the reality than dealing with the not-soimportant daily stuff. “I easily have 10 plus years of content and I add new ideas to that every day” Joshua concluded.
