The new SureColor SC-T7200D and SC-T5200D models feature double paper rolls with auto paper loading and auto switching between rolls. Epson has further increased the versatility of the printers by integrating a 36 inch wide colour scanner with the new multi-function 44 inch and 36 inch SureColor SC-T7200MFP and SCT5200MFP models. These are the first Epson large format printers with a scanner that gives users the ability to digitise large format hard copies and scan to file, scan to email or scan to share with other SC-T printers. An A1 original can be scanned and printed in about 39 seconds. These multi-function printers are also available in either single or double-roll configurations. The SC-T range features very fast image processing, optional 320GB hard drive for significant print spooling functionality and secure networking. To ensure the printers fit seamlessly into design and print environments, PostScript

support with dual 1.6Ghz CPUs is available as an option on all the new SureColor SC-T printers which enables users to print multiple file formats, including large data-rich files directly from design and CAD programs. Epson’s four colour UltraChrome XD pigment ink with permanent PrecisionCore TFP printheads deliver precise, repeatable and long life performance in a choice of 110, 350 and 700 ml cartridges. The ink has been developed to deliver the deep blacks and dense lines needed for detailed technical graphics, and the vibrant colours necessary for prints and posters. Plus, the water resistant and smudge proof ink produces prints that are suitable for short-term outdoor use as well as any indoor application. Canon 7 imagePROGRAF models: wide format - iPF680/iPF685/iPF780/iPF785 MFP - iPF780 MFP/iPF785 MFPand the iPF8400SE 6-colour

Canon has launched its’ large format printer imagePROGRAF upgrade. Some include optional MFP capabilities. By following the launch of two 6-colour SE models in February, Canon intends to strengthen its line-up of 5 colour models that feature broad capabilities, by applications from high-end CAD and engineering drawings to full colour 3D renderings for AEC and in-house poster printing. The seven new models comprised of two 5-colour, 610mm (24”) devices - the imagePROGRAF iPF680/iPF685 – and two 5-colour, 914mm (36”) devices – the imagePROGRAF iPF780/ iPF785 - together with two new MFP solutions, the imagePROGRAF iPF780 MFP and iPF785 MFP. Building on the success of Canon’s 5-colour MFP solutions, the new iPF8400SE 6-colour pigment device is available as an MFP, offering longer-lasting, more durable output due to its pigment ink set. Developed for fast production of high quality technical documents in CAD (Computer-Aided Design), AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) and GIS (Geographical Information

Mimaki TX500-1800DS

System) environments, the imagePROGRAF iPF680/iPF685 and iPF780/iPF785 deliver higher productivity and lower running costs than their predecessors, thanks to a number of new features. All models have an increased speed, with the iPF680/685 able to print A1 in 25 seconds and the iPF780/785 able to print A0 in 41 seconds. The internal hard disk drive in the iPF685/iPF785 has been increased to 320GB, for more storage. Users can choose ink between the previous 130ml ink tank or a larger, high capacity 300ml ink tank. Speed is improved by reduced ink replacement and the ‘hot-swap’ (without stopping) ink tank replacement capability. Quality is improved due to the new magenta ink, expanding the colour gamut, producing clearer red text and lines. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) per millilitre is reduced, as the cost of ink is lower. Space saving is achieved due to front operations and printers set flush against a wall. Canon has upgraded its version 2.0 workflow software Direct Print & Share. This allows users to collaborate and print via the cloud, support a broad range of cloud providers and allow batch printing of multiple HPGL/2 files. A feature allows

users an auto print to pre-defined settings without opening files, by dragging files into a ‘Shortcut’. PosterArtist and PosterArtist Lite have been updated to v2.5, providing full integration with Direct Print & Share, enabling the user to save and share posters in the cloud. By doing so, the software provides even more benefits to users to create superb posters with easy-to-use steps and share with other collaborative team members. With improved print engines and scanning capability, Canon’s imagePROGRAF MFP solution has expanded. SmartWorks software v3.5, has enhanced technical capabilities. Scan length to suit digitised print has increased to 15m maximum. The optional ‘SmartWorks v3.5 Plus’ supports multi-page PDFs on the fly, PDF/A scanning, and RGB colour correction in ‘Preview’ mode, meeting large project requirements. From August this year an Apple App Store application will allow printing from an iPad on the new Canon imagePROGRAF 5-colour models. Canon’s new imagePROGRAF printers are available through authorised Canon partners from beginning of May 2014.

Mimaki plans the European debut of itsTX500-1800DS textile printer at Fespa Digital in May this year, saying the machine is targeted at the soft signage market as well as textiles, such as apparel and furnishings. Mimaki said the TX500-1800DS will print directly on cotton, digitally prepared polyester-based materials and other fabrics for long production runs. The 1800DS will print at 150 sqm/hr in high speed mode thanks to the use of fast drying dye sublimation ink (Sb300), reduction in imperfections (MAPS), Degassing Module (MDM-20) enabling use of bottled inks, Mist Removal Filter for print stability and Auto Media Feeder for continuous printing. The system accepts media rolls up to 300mm in diameter and a maximum weight of 60 kg plus, where the application permits, transfer paper is not needed. Applications range from textile point of sale, mesh and display banners, flags, light boxes, wall art, interior design, furnishings and garments.

EPSON plans to double range of “Sure” brand inkjet printers by 2016

Polytype America Introduces New NKM 21 UV Flatbed Printer Polytype America Corporation, a subsidiary of Polytype Group that sells and services Polytype UV digital printers and Swissqprint’s flatbed/rollto-roll UV printers throughout North America, has announced the launch of the Polytype NKM 21 Grand Format UV flatbed printer to the North American market after making its debut at the ISA Show in Orlando Florida on April 2014. The NKM 21, a 4’ x 8’ combination flatbed/rollto-roll UV printer giving users print flexibility, will be sold exclusively through the Polytype Dealer Network in North America and is targeted at the first time UV flatbed printer users in the sign, screen and associated markets. The NKM 21 has two rows of print heads with 6 colours available plus white, primer (for glass applications) and varnish.

Epson UK says the company plans to double its range of “Sure” brand inkjet printers by 2016 with the aim of launching over 10 new inkjet printers for a range of professional print applications over the next 18 months. Over the previous two years, Epson has introduced 10 professional print products under the ‘Sure’ brand including several ‘firsts’ which opened new markets. The original models include Epson’s first singlepass digital label press and UV technology (the SurePress L-6034V), its first mini dry photolabs (the SureLab range), its first signage/POS wideformat printers (the SureColor SC-S range), its first dye sublimation printers (the SureColor SCF), its first direct-to-garment textile printer (the SureColor SC-F2000) and a new-generation of aqueous display graphics printers (the SureColor SC-T range). Epson intends to continue new product launches and by 2016 Epson plans to offer over 33 professional production printers with dedicated Epson inks fo ruse by the label and packaging, sign and display, production photo and textile markets. Epson says its technology is driving product innovation across the world with a spend of £1.2m a day (approximately 6% of annual turnover) on R&D to drive ink and product development. At the core of Epson’s print technology is the Micro Peizo inkjet printhead. In 2003 Epson had revolutionised home photo-printing and by 2007 Epson Thin Film Piezo was (TFP) was launched for the commercial print industry. This permitted maximum control over drop size resulting in fine image quality required to create graphics with outstanding detail, colour expression, and increased productivity. www.visionmagazine.asia

When PrecisionCore Micro TFP was launched last year, Epson pushed forward again with its TFP print chip. This was the result of one of the largest R&D investments in the company’s history. It built on Epson’s materials science skills and MEMS manufacturing technology. Micro TFP doubles the piezo element’s power, allowing further miniaturisation and scalability opening up new possibilities for fluid handling and substrate compatibility. The modular PrecisionCore chips can be combined in different ways to build a variety of high-performance printheads, from lineheads for industrial presses to serial printheads for desktop printers.

“We are proud to offer a high quality equipment solution at an affordable price to new entrants in the digital printing sector,” said Peter Andrich, president, Polytype America. “Subsequently, as the business grows, we want to arm our clients and move them into larger equipment.” The NKM 21 will be available exclusively through the Polytype America-preferred dealer network in North America.

swissQprint Launches New UV Printer

The first products to use PrecisionCore are the SurePress L-6034V digital label press and the SureColor SC-F2000 direct-to-garment T-shirt printer and will be used extensively in future products. Similar to its printhead technology, Epson’s ink technology is a part of their professional print production. Epson says it is the only company today developing and manufacturing the full range of aqueous, solvent, resin, UV, dye sublimation and textile inks. In order to meet emerging commercial markets and industrial digital printing needs, Epson‘s strategy is to continue refining its compact, energy saving and high precision technologies by leveraging its core Micro Piezo and PrecisionCore printhead technologies. The vision and ultimate aim of Minoru Usui, President of Seiko Epson, is that everything will be printed by Epson with the aim of affordable, highquality print solutions for commercial, signage, décor, label, textile and photo print specialists.

Swissqprint, the Swiss headquartered manufacturer of high-end inkjet systems, announced the release of a new, highly economical UV flatbed printer at FESPA Digital 2014. Fourth in the company’s line-up, it will be the largest and most economical of the range because in addition to its super sized printing dimensions, the new flatbed system also lays claim to quality printing at output rates never seen before. Swissqprint said that while productivity is an important aspect, versatility is just as important.

GMG Colour leads Fogra’s proofing challenge

Colorgate, N-Art-M and Staedtler trio cut a deal and plan a one-stop consultancy shop German companies Colorgate, N-Art-M and Staedtler Mars have agreed to cooperate to service the industrial printing sector. The consortium are targeting machine builders and OEM’s that are looking for partners interested in developing specialised industrial printing systems, irrespective of whether they are requiring minor components for a digital printing system or looking for a complete solution. The main objective of the partners is to become the first stop for those searching for customised solutions. The trio plan to offer integrated services from consultancy and concept design, installation and after sales services. Bespoke solutions will be delivered through Colorgate’s colour management expertise within the digital space, N-Art-M’s work with print heads from leading manufacturers and Staedtler’s experience as an ink manufacturer in the industrial printing market.

GMG Color recently achieved top rankings in Fogra’s recent ‘Printing the expected – Textile!’ proofing challenge. The importance of colour management within the textile digital printing industry is growing in significance as this market develops. In this sector the tightest tolerances in colour accuracy and consistency from the design to the delivery of the final product are particularly important. As a result Fogra, along with the German Fashion Institute, decided to challenge proofing solution providers during the recent ‘Colour-Management-Symposium’ in Munich. As part of the ‘Printing the expected – Textile’ Challenge, companies had to prepare proofs for four fabric samples. The proofs had to deliver an optimal average simulation of the fabric samples under three different types of light: Artificial light (A), Daylight (D65) and Store light (TL84). Six companies took part in the challenge, delivering more than a dozen versions of proofs to Fogra for analysis. The anonymous evaluation of the proofs included a visual assessment by an independent panel and measurement of the CIELAB2000 color difference between the original samples and their simulations for each type of light. Both the measured colour correlation and visual assessment resulted in the selection of GMG proofs as the most accurate colour reproduction for all samples.

Digital printing may be a hot topic in Hong Kong, but it is still not as impactful in the industry. Print companies in Hong Kong still revolve their business largely around offset printing. The main reason for this is the accompanying costs of digital printing.

Standardised Printing to Go Green

Packaging Prototyping

Exploring 3D Printing

As businesses all over the world pledge to be more environmentally friendly, the same rings true for print companies in Hong Kong. This stance was apparent at the recently concluded Hong Kong International Printing and Packaging Fair 2014, which dedicated a significant amount of fairground to green solutions. The zone was a new inclusion to the fair, in response to survey results for previous shows revealing that amongst the suppliers, there is mounting interest in eco-friendly products.

Digital printing is already used in flexible packaging, package label design and the production of commodity labels such as branded liquor. A growing market segment for digital print is in packaging prototypes which is gaining popularity in Hong Kong and customers demand quick turnaround times.

The rise of 3D printing technology has sparked debate in the market. Some laud it as the next big thing, others deem it experimental at best. One thing is for certain – it’s popularity will not die down anytime soon.

Standardised printing has become popular in the last 2 years. According to Ming, the standardisation of skills, equipment and substrates is the key to maintaining high effectiveness of production while minimising pollution. Instead of focusing on just environmentally friendly products, printers should pay attention to the print production workflow as well. Standardisation enhances print production quality by reducing conflicts with different departments and minimising human error. “The most important thing is the management, you need to know the value for money. It’s very easy to define green substrates, there are labels and certifications that you can look out for. But genuine environmental protection is not simply about using eco materials, having a standardised print workflow is the ultimate goal,” Ming asserted.

“Prototyping used to be a lengthy process, especially when you take into account the validation work of going back and forth with the client. A lot of companies now often want to make a lot of changes to their designs. If you could produce the design prototypes very quickly on a digital printer, you can shorten this cycle, and that’s the whole idea,” said Philip Chan, assistant director, Canon Hongkong Co., Ltd. “The competitiveness is in the ability to have shorter time cycles. Recently we’ve been having very good success with our Oce Arizona,” Chan added. The Oce Arizona is a series of UV flatbed printers that allows printing on a variety of rigid and flexible media. “In the past, quality prototypes were made using offset machines. There are ways to do it digitally, but it’s a clumsy process. You have to use a special paper to print on, and then adhere it on the packaging material, because it cannot print on the original carton boxes. The printers allow direct printing on the right material, which is quite a revolution. It’s a new way of doing packaging prototype,” said Chan.

In a survey performed by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s autumn electronics fair, more than half of respondents described the market potential of 3D printers as promising in the near future while observing a rising demand of rapid-prototyping machines in various industries. “A typical use of 3D printers is to produce special parts that would otherwise be outsourced to another company, which end up being very costly and time consuming,” said Freddie Poon, product marketing manager, GrandTech Systems Limited. He noted that customers had shown high interest in their company’s 3D printers. For now, 3D printing appears most useful for packaging prototyping: “3D printing is definitely a trend in Hong Kong. Although it is not printing per se, it has extensive applications, especially for the print packaging industry. With a 3D printer, companies can get their packaging prototypes within a day, when it will normally take a costly process of 3 to 4 weeks.”

“Most mass production printing is located in China, not Hong Kong. How can Hong Kong remain competitive? Prototyping is the solution here. Most of the design work is done in Hong Kong, and most clients, product managers and decision makers are situated here as well,” Chan concluded. www.visionmagazine.asia

lose to 90% of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) decision-makers are changing their cloud buying behaviour as a direct result of Edward Snowden’s allegations of large scale clandestine cyber-surveillance, a study published by NTT Communications claimed. ‘NSA Aftershocks: How Snowden has Changed IT DecisionMakers’ Approach to the Cloud’ is based on a survey of 1,000 ICT decision-makers from France, Germany, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and the USA. The study highlights nine aftershocks from Snowden’s revelations, which are compelling companies to rethink how they use cloud computing.

“Our findings show that the NSA allegations have hardened ICT decision-makers’ attitudes towards cloud computing, whether it is modifying procurement policies, scrutinising potential suppliers or taking a heightened interest in where their data is stored,” said Len Padilla, vice president for product strategy, NTT Communications. “Despite the scandal and global security threat, business executives need to remember that cloud platforms do help firms become more agile, and do help foster technology innovation, even in the most risk-averse organisations. “ICT decision-makers are working hard to find ways to retain those benefits and protect the organisation against being compromised in any way. There is optimism that the industry can solve these issues through restricting data movement and encryption of data.” he said.

Fujifilm new UV inkjet inks

Uvijet OH The latest Uvijet ink development for the Onset, Uvijet OH has been formulated for use with Polyethylene and Polypropylene materials that are becoming more popular due to their ability to be recycled. Uvijet OL

Fujifilm introduced a number of new inks at FESPA Digital 2014, targeted at a variety of applications. This new offering allows print service providers to generate business in new application areas using existing wide-format hardware. Four new inks were launched, all of which will enable customers to achieve end results more quickly, and offer greater quality and versatility. These new inks, which have a range of potential end uses, provide the industry with more choice when combined with equipment purchases, and also give end users more options for filling their printers with work, ultimately giving a faster payback. In addition, Fujifilm is also offering new design and delivery systems for its inks, for instance pouches, which can maximise the environmental and economic benefits for printers. Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems (FSIS), based in Broadstairs UK, has been developing UV inkjet technology for 15 years. “15 years ago we were

the first company to patent a UV ink, and we now hold more patents for this technology than anyone else. Over this period we have worked hard with leading industry OEMs to ensure that UV is the ink of choice for wide-format machines in terms of quality and performance,” commented Tudor Morgan, systems marketing manager at FSIS. FSIS has been working closely with the company’s R&D department in Tokyo to develop next generation inks that focus on more creative applications, such as light industrial, as well as point-of-purchase where they are already well established. “With our history in UV technology we can demonstrate to the industry that we really do understand the requirements of each and every application. The chemistry that needs to go into each ink formulation is unique, and our team works hard to look for formulations that are futureproof, and also more cost effective than some of today’s solutions,” added Tudor.

Uvijet OL is a new low odour corrugated ink which satisfies the DiN EN 1230-1 standard aimed at display and secondary packaging, with the residual odour for OL mimicking that of water based flexo inks. Uvijet KV Fujifilm’s new thermoforming UV-cured inkjet ink, Uvijet KVis aimed at light industrial applications. This new formulation maintains the high quality, vivid colours and excellent performance expected from a Fujifilm ink, with no compromise to the print speed of the Acuity Advance Select printers it is used with. It has outstanding elongation properties of 300-400% when heat formed. Uvijet QN white Uvijet QN white is a new white ink which has also been developed to increase the scope of possible applications on the Uvistar. This ink will allow users to produce super-wide format posters which can be illuminated for either day or night usage.

That’s a Wrap!

As advertising and personalisation trends extend its reaches to automotive, vehicle wrapping is expected to increase

V

ehicle wrapping is a growing trend in outdoor advertising. A main reason is in its effectiveness in reaching out to a broad range of audiences. Unlike other advertising medium such as print ads, banners or billboards, audiences are least likely to ignore advertising on a vehicle.

A study done by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America revealed that 80% of participants could recall certain aspects of vehicle wrap advertisements seen once and 91% could recall significant parts when viewed several times a week through normal commuting. 90% felt that vehicle wraps were more effective than billboard ads. “Vehicle graphics are on a definite rise in outof-home advertising,” said Pravin Krishnan, segment marketing director for Asia Pacific, Avery Dennison. “Especially given the increasing number of vehicles in Asia Pacific, the nascent stage of fleet graphics in the region compared to Western markets, and the ‘eye balls’ that a moving vehicle will attract compared to a static billboard.” Krishnan observed that the growth is largely propelled by personalisation, especially in vehicle paint replacements. Termed the ‘paint replacement vehicle wraps’, this trend involved covering the factory colour on a car, truck, or boat with a different-coloured wrap vinyl. www.visionmagazine.asia

“Everyone wants to be different, be it an individual or an organization for how the vehicle looks like or how the interior environment where they work, live and play,” Krishnan added. “One of the main benefits of this is the ability to change the colour of a vehicle, without affecting the factory paint. It looks great, while preserving the resale value of the car. Paint replacement wraps provide all of the benefits of changing the vehicle’s colour, without the commitment. If the car owner decides to change the color a year or two later, the wrap can be removed easily, and rewrapped,” said Krishnan. Avery Dennison’s Supreme Wrapping Film recently topped benchmarking studies, when placed against seven other films from major manufacturers. The benchmark tests were conducted by three independent applicators at three different skill levels with the support of an independent wrap shop. Slideability, repositionability, air egress, conformability, application speed, removal speed and finish quality were evaluated. Unsurprisingly, the Supreme Wrapping Film is popular with customers in the Asian region.

According to Krishnan, time efficiency, easy application, superior performance and long-term removability are characteristics that vehicle wrap applicators and installers are looking for: “Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film ranked highest for slideability and conformability, and achieved the highest score for overall performance. Application times were also measured and Supreme Wrapping Film was rated the fastest to apply, at almost 20% faster than other products.” Some basic key points to take note of when handling vehicle wrapping projects include selecting the correct type of media to be used for the vehicle, for example, a full wrap would require using cast films. Proper curing of the inks prior to any overlaminating and application is also essential. “And last but not least, use properly trained and highly skilled applicators using the right methods and tools,” Krishnan emphasised.

Increasing Productivity to Grow Business

In today’s competitive digital printing landscape, both SMEs and enterprises should increase productivity to boost profitability

P

rint industries are investing in more solutions and technologies to enhance productivity, alongside providing other value-added services, according to Jarrod Chong, senior business development consultant, Fuji Xerox. The trend points to one thing - print businesses cannot just print anymore. “Businesses should focus on investing in various solutions to enhance productivity such as Print MIS, colour management solutions and other workflow automation software to drive more jobs efficiently through their operations with lesser wastes,“ Chong added. Fuji Xerox engages its customers through workshops, partnerships, seminars, training programmes and consultancy projects to help businesses grow. Most recently, the company held the 14th edition of Fuji Xerox DocuWorld Conference in Singapore to showcase the latest in print innovations and services. Some new tools Fuji Xerox has developed to increase productivity include the Object Oriented Halftoning, which allows different halftone screens to be applied to various graphic elements on the same page to optimise the print result.

Print Marketing – Still Thriving As technology continues to evolve, businesses naturally change the way they operate. Online marketing may be the talk of the town, but print will not be taking the backseat anytime soon. InfoTrends’ research reports in 2012 stipulated that promotional print took up the largest share of enterprise firms’ and SMEs’ marketing communication budgets. “Print is still a key communications channel in the enterprise space,” Chong agreed. “Consulting company, Caslon, foresees that variable information, full colour digital printing and direct mail market segments will continue to grow.” A 2014 study conducted by Woodwing Software revealed that 21.6% of marketers would be focusing on print marketing as a key channel in the upcoming year, above web and mobile strategies.

The company has also developed a second new full colour production continuous feed inkjet press (FX 1400 IJCCF) with a smaller footprint targeted at business colour applications that require higher productivity (>1000 pages per minute).

A majority of 59.2% of marketers, however, would be implementing a multichannel communications approach. Multi-channel communications strategy refers to a combination use of print, Web, mobile, tablet and social media tools to reach out to audiences.

Besides investing in productivity tools, having a qualified workforce is also an important factor for growth: “Attracting good talent to support their business transformation and continuous learning of best practices in this industry is the driving force to raise the bar of professionalism and growth in the graphic communications arena,” Chong concluded.

“Change is the only constant in today’s competitive environment,” Chong asserted. “Business owners should take a step back, give serious thought on which path they want their business to grow and make commitments to possibly invest in new business models like web-to-print and multi-channel communications.” www.visionmagazine.asia

Green Growth An increasing number of countries in Asia are transforming their economies toward a more sustainable model due to climate change and accelerated environmental damage

I

n a world where the progress of a nation is measured by a country’s GDP, the state of the environment often takes a toll. In favour of economic progress, many countries across the world do not take into account the consequences of environmental issues such as air and water pollution, energy use and natural resource depletion. Southeast Asia is estimated to be the most vulnerable to the climate changes, as a consequence of rapid carbon-intensive growth. An IEA research in 2009 estimated that Asia accounts for 27% of the world’s energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, and the share is highly likely to increase to 44% by 2030. In light of increased awareness and recent environmental calamities, more countries are making commitments to a green growth economy. The concept of green growth is the means by which the current economy can make the transition to a sustainable one while reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, minimising waste and inefficient use of natural resources. “Governments understand the effect urbanisation has on the environment. We see it almost everyday as well, in China, Hong Kong and Malaysia, where the pollution index is very high. There is a concerted effort now by the government, compared to say, 10 years ago,” said Nicholas Ng, regional manager for graphics solutions, HP Asia Pacific and Japan. At the forefront of green growth are the economies of Japan, the Republic of Korea and Singapore. Since 1970, these countries have successfully made the transition from being least developed to fast growing economies, suggesting that developmental efforts that facilitate environmentally-sustainable growth is possible. It appears that these countries are leading the way for emerging markets around the region. In March 2014, Japanese companies started pitching advanced environmental technologies in emerging Asia, where economic expansion and population growth are sharply boosting demand for all things green. At the same time, Vietnam had developed a National Green Growth Strategy to help improve people’s living standards and accelerate the process of economic restructuring in a sustainable manner. “Surprisingly in Manila, they even have one day called ‘Strawless Day’ where you can’t find straws on one day of the week. They also have this campaign in Makati, one of the bigger cities, where they are also going on a green drive to have lesser usage of plastic. I think it is getting there,” Ng continued.

Print Goes Green Fundamentally, printing is not an environmentally-friendly industry, from the amount of paper used, to the use of solvents and consumables. Since green growth meant that adopting sustainable practices can maintain economic development, eco-friendly printing is fortunately not only becoming a norm, but sought after. Big players in print, such as HP, Canon and Fuji Xerox, already have comprehensive environmental initiatives. Ng pointed out that there is a definite trend in corporate buyers and advertisers requesting specifically for printing that is not only VOC-free, but PVC-free as well. “One of the major retailers actually requested for PVC-free and VOC-free printing for recent campaigns. A main reason was for safety. In case of a fire, the printed material does not combust as easily as the ones printed with VOC or plastic. When those materials get burnt, the toxic fumes that are released are extremely harmful. Materials printed with PVC-free, or latex ink, do not release these harmful chemicals. So there’s actually also a business aspect to their choice,” Ng continued. Although green programmes exist, the adoption rate is still not as fast as it needs to be. Despite his optimistic observations, Ng agreed that there is still a lot of work to be done: “It’s a sad fact that eco-printing is still not as widely utilised.” The main reason? Costs. Ultimately, a substantial amount of investment is required to implement green technologies. Ng, however, implored printers, to take on a macro view on the overall costs of adopting print technologies. “The overall cost of using latex printing is actually on par, if not lower. Compared to a solvent printing, the turnaround time is lower and there is less manpower required to maintain it,” Ng said, using HP’s prolific waterbased latex ink technology as an example. It all boils down to communication and customer education instead: “Let’s put it another way. If the print buyer or advertiser is aware that with just a little bit more, they can get printed outputs that is green and not harmful for the environment, and can still reinforce their corporate image, do you think they would go for the green printing? Perhaps that’s the message that has yet to be brought up to the print buyer, and needs to be communicated enough.”

Stratasys 3D printing reduces prototyping time and costs by 96% The final Hemosep after iterative prototyping on the Stratasys Dimension 1200es 3D Printer Stratasys 3D printed wound probe - used prior to surgery to determine the depth of wounds from weapons such as knives or bullets

Hospital experience had shown that during any invasive surgical procedure or post operative complication, a patient may need many units of blood, even when donated blood was in short supply. Responding to this problem, BrightWake Ltd developed the Hemosep machine, designed to recycle a patient’s own blood during surgery. By using “autotransfusion,” blood cells are prepared for re-use and returned to the body. Although the Hemosep consists of multiple components, the parts were prototyped on a Stratasys Dimension 1200es 3D Printer allowing the

Brightwake team to make quick changes instead of waiting weeks for replacements. Made from ABS plastic using Stratasys Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printing technology, the parts were protoyped and tested before the final product was produced in metal. Prior to this, parts were outsourced, taking approximately 3 weeks per part. It was estimated that by printing 3D parts overnight, prototyping costs have been reduced by a factor of 96%, saving more than UKL £1,000 for each 3D model printed.

Stratasys 3D printing material simulates polypropylene Stratasys have introduced Endur, a simulated polypropylene material for use with all Objet EdenV, Objet Connex, Objet500 Connex3 and Objet 30Pro 3D Printers.

Stratasys 3D printed probe assist with critical surgery

The product offers high impact resistance and elongation at break with the company describing Endur as both durable and flexible and claims a heat-deflection temperature up to 129°F / 54°C (HDT @ 0.45MPa per ASTM D-648-06) with dimensional stability for its material class. Stratsys say the has been designed to suit a wide range of form, fit and assembly applications, including flexible living hinges, moving and assembled parts as well as snap-fit parts such as lids, packaging cases and containers. In bright white with a smooth look and feel, Endur is suited to prototyping household appliances, consumer goods, automotive parts and lab equipment.

Stratasys advisory board to help digital dentistry Stratasys has established a dental advisory board to help advance digital dentistry. The board’s objective is to add value, spur dental lab business growth and share best practices that enable 3D printing and materials for future innovation and it will do so through the support and promotion of R&D and education of dental digital technologies and materials. Board also aims to use research and industry trends to guide the direction and development of the Stratasys dental business.

Stratasys 3D printed Saline Probe, produced from ABS Plus material, used to pierce a saline bottle and prime the Hemosep bag prior to use By capturing, cleaning and returning lost blood during an operation the Hemosep proved to be ideal for a 50 year old Jehovah’s Witness heart patient who did not want to receive donated blood products. Hemosep clinical trials are continuing in the UK after successful clinical trials in Turkey, earning the CE mark. www.visionmagazine.asia
