VISION HOPE INTERNATIONAL // FEBRUARY 2018. Dear all, In the past two months, we have been looking back on an exciting year. We achieved a lot in 2017, but there is still much more work to be done. Our most important mission remains: giving hope. We want to continue exactly where we left off last year. Through our work, we were able to change hundreds of thousands of lives. Be it cholera treatments in Yemen, birth assistance in Syria, help for coping with trauma in Jorden, or youth empowerment in Tunisia, every life that we touched was significantly changed for the better. The most vulnerable members of society – children, women, and refugees – were able to experience a spark of hope. We give hope in several ways. While we do help where the need is most urgent, our goal is not only to respond to emergencies. Wars put people into a continuous state of suffering and usually hit those who are already underprivileged the hardest. We want to give a voice to those people – not speak for them, but rather provide them with a place where they are heard. You will have the chance to hear one of those voices in this newsletter: the mother of Zainab, a four-year-old girl who was cured of cholera thanks to the work of Vision Hope. We could not have achieved this without the help of all our supporters – donors, employees, volunteers, and partners. We depend on your generosity, and everything you give us, we pay forward. Do you want to help us help others? Find us on social media or our website to learn about our current projects and how you can get involved. You have the chance to change lives. We are counting on you!

Best wishes,

Matthias Leibbrand, CEO

THIS MONTH // YEMEN. We are following the current conflict in Yemen with great concern. It is threatening the population’s livelihood through nature’s most vital resource: water. Due to the war, the diesel which is needed to operate water pumps has become scarce, rendering many wells useless. Women and girls especially are affected by this. They sometimes spend hours walking to carry water from valleys up to remote mountain villages. However, there is a viable alternative to ensure those villages’ access to water. Harvesting rainwater is easily possible, thanks to high precipitation rates during the monsoon season. In the past year, we have implemented projects to restore rainwater filter systems in 20 villages in Hajjah Governorate, the war’s most heavily affected region. Rainwater harvesting systems do not need diesel pumps for the extraction of water; therefore, the burden of obtaining water was successfully reduced. The construction measures have been completed, and after the next rainy season, the cisterns can be used in a sustainable way to make water available to the mountain villages. Along with the cisterns, we also provided the local residents with water filters and hygiene promotion sessions. They resulted in a significant decline in diarrheal diseases.

THIS MONTH // VOICES. “My baby is alive again.” Those are the moving words of Zainab’s mother. Zainab is four years old and was infected with cholera. She was suffering from strong stomachaches when she was admitted into a hospital under Vision Hope’s supervision. Her parents were hopeless; they knew that Zainab’s illness was life-threatening, and they had previously experienced the hospital as chaotic and unsanitary. What they did not know was that Vision Hope had trained the entire staff and sponsored new equipment. Zainab received the medical care she needed and is now recovering. Her family now knows how to protect themselves from cholera thanks to a cholera care package and instructions on proper hygiene.

THIS MONTH // GERMANY. Thanks to your support, we were able to bring some light into the suffering during the war in Yemen. In the last newsletter, we called for help for an orphanage for 80 boys in Hajjah that would not have been able to remain open without your support. Your generosity allowed us to meet our goal of €60,000, which is needed to sustain the orphanage for another year. We were particularly moved by a donation of €8,300 from the employees of the Friedhelm Loh Group. The company owner himself, Prof. Friedhelm Loh, more than matched the contribution of his employees, resulting in a total of €30,000. Our cholera project also benefitted greatly from our supporter’s generosity. €5,700 from the German-Yemeni Association allowed us to expand and improve cholera treatment facilities. We can now better serve a larger number of people. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

PLEASE HELP // CHOLERA AND DIPHTHERIA As much as we were able to achieve, there is still a lot left to do. The lack of water and armed conflict are not the only threats to civilians in Yemen. As a direct result of the war and the consequent collapse of the infrastructure in large parts of the country, diseases are quickly spreading. Infections, such as cholera and diphtheria, pose a great challenge for the war-torn country, one that could be alleviated by relatively simple means. Toothbrushes, soap, and detergents are not anything out of the ordinary. However, in areas affected by cholera and diphtheria, they are luxuries that can significantly reduce the infection risk. We created health kits, filled with basic necessities to protect against re-infection, for patients to take home after their treatments. For â‚Ź17, we can provide a diphtheria kit, and â‚Ź30 fills a cholera kit. Small donations can make all the difference for families that are otherwise at great risk to catch the diseases again.
