We must say, that was one long ass winter.
Measurable snow — even in Virginia Beach — along with wind, rain, and a relentless chill for the full duration of winter has us more than ready for warm weather, clear skies, a fresh season of craft beers, and festivals.
In this issue of Virginia Craft Beer Magazine, we have put together an informative collection of essential festivals across the Commonwealth.
You’ll notice we’ve sought-out festivals beyond craft beer specific events — those have become fewer, in part, because so many of our independent breweries are hosting their own events, and these seem quite popular with dedicated locals as well as day-trippers and weekenders seeking adventure and fun.
As you seek out a festival or event in a location three hours from home, we encourage you to make an overnight experience.
If you attend the Bayou Bon Vivant in Norfolk, for example, a three-day jambalaya celebrating the culture of The Big Easy through food, music, and art, be sure to make time and visit a couple nearby breweries like Benchtop, Afterglow, Smartmouth, or even the notable Birch Bar.
Heading to the two-day Crozet Spring Arts & Craft Festival? Starr Hill Brewery and Pro Re Nata are no-brainers to add to your craft experience. Virginia is a beautiful state with a lot going for it and the cornucopia of springtime festivals made memorable with music, local foods and beverages, and unique works of art are certainly a highlight that enhances our quality of life.

Norfolk micro brewery Rip Rap Brewing Company has been sold to the owners of Newport News headquartered Coastal Fermentory.
Coastal Fementory co-owner Seth Caddall confirmed the sale in early February when an ABC Publishing Notice was posted on the front door of Rip Rap.
“Our intent is to keep it as Rip Rap Brewing Company,” Caddall said. “We will continue to grow and invest in that brand that ‘Liam has done a great job of creating.
Rip Rap Brewing Company was opened in April 2016 by ‘Liam Bell, while still serving in the US Coast Guard at the time. The tiny brewing company has garnered several awards and has a loyal following in Norfolk’s Railroad District.
Rip Rap has maintained a constant rotation of small batch beers on draft including numerous fan favorites such as Breakwater Cream Ale, Bowsprit Kolsch, Bilgewater Coffee Stout, and Running Rust Red Ale.
“It’s kind of a Norfolk institution,” Caddall said of the brand, “so we don’t want to mess with a good thing.”
The plan is to have staff working back and forth between the Rip Rap location and Coastal Fermentory’s two locations in Newport News. Maintaining the brands as separate entities is essential.
“Fingers crossed the regulars that know Rip Rap won’t even realize that it has changed hands,” Caddall said. “Rarely do you have the chance to take stewardship of a brand with so much history.”
The appeal of purchasing Rip Rap also had to do with the work ethic and culture shared by the two breweries.
Caddall sees the two distinct brands serving different tastes as well as vastly different markets.
The bartenders and front-of-the-house staff working at Rip Rap have retained. The brew team of Coastal Fermentory will brew the Rip Rap recipes in Norfolk.
Greenbrier commercial corridor as completely separate and unique businesses with little to no cross pollination.
“It’s cool to have a different vibe at each,” Caddall said. “We always thought Rhett was doing something cool with that concept. We’re trying to lean into that same kind of idea.”
As a model of success to emulate locally, the owners of Coastal Fermentory observed how Rhett at Vibrant Shore Brewing Company (located in Virginia Beach’s trendy ViBe Creative District) manages to keep The Garage Brewery in Chesapeake’s congested
In related news, Coastal Fermentory opened in Uptown location by the Newport News airport in midJanuary. It features an on-site restaurant and 24 taps of beer, though no brews are produced on location. The brewery is, however, experimenting with long-term beer aging for Belgian-style sour ales at Uptown to meet the ABC requirements for a brewery operating a secondary or satellite location.
Ashburn-based Old Ox Brewing Company will close April 5 after 11 years in business. The family-owned and operated 30-barrel brewhouse produced such core beers as Hoppy Place IPA, Golden Ox (Belgian golden ale), and Black Ox (rye porter).
In short, founders Graham and Mary Ann Burns were ready for retirement. Children Chris and Kristin, who worked various jobs in the brewery, had discovered opportunities outside the craft beer industry.
The Burns family said in a social media post they’d found a buyer to continue the brewery, however, the property owner had just signed an all together different tenant for the space.
“It’s been an epic ride and we’re so thankful to all of you that have come along on this ride with us,” the family shared in a joint statement.
Now in its 19th year, Alewerks Brewing Company is bringing a subtle change to its core brands.
The Williamsburg-based craft brewery is one of the oldest operating in the Hampton Roads region.
In its nearly two decades, Alewerks has built a golden reputation by producing consistent high-quality traditional beverages such as its Tavern Brown Ale and Chesapeake Pale Ale.
The beer maker has also been keen to produce seasonals such as its very popular Pumpkin ale and in-demand limited-edition specialty brands like Bitter Valentine, Fun, Old-Fashioned Family Christmas Ale, and barrel-aged favorites Cafe Royale and the upcoming Jubilee XIX.
The current refresh is the brewery’s fourth.
“The craft beer industry has matured, meaning the decades of consistent growth have plateaued,” explained operations manager Michael Claar. “We’re seeing craft beer lose share to both alcoholic and non-alcoholic alternatives, but fortunately Alewerks has been able to outperform the market during this time. We asked ourselves how we could maintain this momentum? From our perspective, the rebrand has been about staying relevant — to prevent falling into a slumping sales pattern by reinvigorating a brand that is well known and respected.”
Regarding the subtle tweaks, Claar added: “By evolving the logo rather than a drastic change we’re delivering a promise that we’re still focused on what got us here — consistent, quality craft beer. The font and color scheme are intended to evoke a semi-retro feel but we intentionally tried to avoid being too sophisticated. We wanted the branding to feel sincere but still accessible; proud, not arrogant.”
The Fiddlin’ Pig, a British pub in historic Smithfield, recently received the Cask Marque designation, a rarity for an American establishment (only 14 in the USA, none in Virginia).
Virginia Craft Brewers Guild CEO Brett Vassey and St. George Brewing Company founder Bill Spence were on-hand for the accreditation ceremony.
“This is how English beers have been made for centuries, cask conditioned and served in pubs as a proper pint” says David Goodman, owner of The Fiddlin’ Pig. “Modern brewing equipment and processes have streamlined beer production, but every beer aficionado will tell you that there’s just something special about a cask ale.”
Cask, or real ale, is an unfiltered beer, typically an ale, that is transferred into casks after fermentation. It is naturally carbonated in the vessel and sealed, where it then undergoes a slight final fermentation in the cask.
One of Fiddlin’ Pig’s primary sources for cask ales has been The St. George Brewing Company in nearby Hampton.
“When David reached out to us about
whether or not we had cask beers available, I think he was just hoping that we might have some currently in stock,” says Spence. “We actually didn’t at the time, but it opened up the
conversation and we jumped at the chance to produce a few beer styles in casks because that’s what we do here: we make the best English-style ales this side of London.”

Nini Johnson knows what it’s like being around kids. Having the atmosphere at Chubby Squirrel Brewing Company evolve into a very family friendly space is something that clearly makes her happy.
“It is something I tried to forge, being from a preschool background,” she tells me, mentioning details like wall sections the kids can draw on and little toys she keeps on hand that kids can take home.
Saturdays have become kids days, but also there is the number of times Chubby Squirrel hosts mom groups, book
clubs, and more.
Nini mentions how great it is that the brewery has such a strong community of regulars from a wide range of backgrounds. Her affiliation with the brewery springs from a time when she ran a preschool housed in a church where Boyd Harrison, future owner of Chubby Squirrel, was a church administrator.
Boyd tells me, “I’ve always enjoyed craft beer —-I celebrated graduating from Virginia Tech with a huge bottle of Stone Double Bastard shared with friends.”
Chubby Squirrel Brewing Company uses a lot of animated images like this one to promote its brand on social media.
Those same friends bought him his first homebrew kit. Being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2010 did not stop his craft beer journey, but he adapted by learning to brew gluten reduced beers. Around 2015, while working towards his Masters at GWU, Boyd was aware of how Fairfax City was in a brewery-free doughnut hole and began drawing up a business plan.
“After I had already designed the business and run several plans, I wound up working with my neighbor Josh after inviting him over to homebrew with me. He was completely onboard with learning the trade.”
Josh’s educational background included chemistry, which certainly didn’t hurt. Add several Craft Brewers Conference visits and his confidence in brewing, recipe development, trends, and technology was enhanced.
A dozen locations were looked at before Boyd settled on the present location in the Courthouse Plaza shopping center in downtown Fairfax City, a short walk from the Old Town Square. The grand opening was July 2018 with the square-footage being increased substantially after a couple of years when a barbershop left an adjacent space. Chubby Squirrel took it over.
Brewing is done on a 3-BBL electric system from Stout Tanks & Kettles out of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Back when Boyd and Nini were running into each other in that church, Nini learned about the brewery plans and said it sounded like fun, and she would be happy to work weekends. After the preschool fell victim to COVID, she came on board full-time, essentially working as the operational manager.
More recently Josh decided to become a firefighter. For now, Boyd has returned to the task of head brewer with other employees helping out as needed.
As to the beer, Nini tells me she has found the clientele leans towards IPAs, hazy or West Coast. Recent offerings include a Festbier, Czech Pilsner, Coffee Stout, and English ESB.
Chubby Squirrel also sets itself a part by having a guest beer on tap, such as Jackie O’s Mystic Momma West Coast IPA. The food offerings have gone through some different changes, but the constants have included wings and their well-regarded burger. Three different grilled cheeses have joined the menu and are very popular. Other items include pierogis, Bavarian pretzels, crispy tots, poutine, and boom boom shrimp. Seasonal items like crab cakes and lobster rolls do find their way onto the menu at times. Just recently a new employee was brought on with the goal of doing some “gastropub” type things with the menu.
Visit Chubby Squirrel for tasty beer and food, a friendly casual atmosphere, and easy parking. Their 4.7 rating on Google speaks for itself. Oh, and the name? Rumor has it that Second Life Brewing was to be the name, but it had already been claimed. So, one day Boyd was drinking beer in his backyard with close friend Adam Smith when a super fat squirrel with its belly dragging the ground ran across the yard and then struggled to climb a fence. Boyd began riffing on how chubby the squirrel was, and a brewery name was born.

n 2020, Jay Smith was on the search for a vineyard to purchase in the Charlottesville area when he happened upon Glass House Winery. Instantly falling in love with the sprawling acreage, the unique greenhouse-style interior with colorful tropical plants, and a business model that included an in-house chocolatier, Smith knew that he’d found exactly what he was looking for. Not only did he buy the vineyard, but he also created a four to five-year plan to expand operations into brewing, and in March of 2025 those plans came to fruition with the grand opening of the brewery.
“Being a planner and an innovator, my plan before I bought the winery was to open a brewery,” Smith said. “I did a lot of research on demographics on beer, breweries, and craft beer. I wanted to do something different to make us attractive and unique.”
Smith has some experience with homebrewing but for the Glass House brewing operation, he has partnered with another established local brewer to craft the first three brews that have been released -- a Vienna Lager, Hazy IPA, and Pineapple Sour -- all of which will be available, initially, only onsite.
Each of the beers is made using his partner’s equipment but the recipes are Smith’s. And more varieties are on the way. “I’m always thinking ahead,” he said. “Stouts, potentially brown ales, maybe cider, and I’m considering a non-alcoholic beer.” Smith also noted that he has been looking into experimenting with overlap with the winery operation in the form of potentially aging the beer in
the vineyard’s wine barrels. Additionally, he hopes to eventually utilize some of the property’s fruits like persimmons, peaches, and apples in future fermentations.
Currently, the winery’s tasting room offers options for pairing its in-house-made chocolates with various varietals, an experience that highlights how specific wines can transform the chocolates that are available in flavors that range from salted caramel and cherry chili to rum & coconut and Earl Grey. Ultimately, Smith hopes to do the same type of pairing with the beers.
“We needed the beer to try the chocolates with it; absolutely we will match it with the beer, he said. “I think we’ll end up creating new chocolates that go with beer even better or different ones, like chocolate-covered nuts.”
As a music enthusiast, Smith invites Central Virginiabased musicians to perform regularly at the property, but he has his eye on expanding the event schedule as well, including collaborations with other area breweries. Glass House’s onsite 6,000 square-foot bed and breakfast is also getting some upgrades. He’s hired a new Innkeeper who is also a trained chef which has translated to both a new brunch and plated dinners.
Smith’s primary goal is to provide a venue where visitors feel welcome and can enjoy themselves whether it’s for a tasting, an overnight stay, or a wedding. “I love people, I love seeing people happy,” he said. “I want people to come to this vineyard and brewery to have fun, be safe, and enjoy life. When I see people having fun I’m having fun.”
