For much of my life, summertime meant two things — music and beer.
After I graduated from high school, I began playing guitar in a punk rock band. There was a thriving underground music scene in Norfolk during the 1980s. Getting a gig with two or three other groups in a steamy, under-air conditioned dive bar was my ticket to a blissful existence.
To keep cool on those humid nights and to get our courage up before storming the stage, there was pitcher after pitcher of cheap lager sucked down.
One bar had Löwenbräu and Tuborg Gold on tap. We scrawny, barley 18-year-olds thought we were drinkin’ some highly sophisticated European beers.
Luckily, I made it through my college years with a bachelor’s degree in business, a masters in drunken nights, and a doctorate in playing 3-minute originals in spicy little bars like The Corner, Cogan’s Instant Art, and King’s Head Inn.
I was never one to put on a suit and tie. I had one, mind you, in case of a funeral that hopefully wasn’t my own.
By the late 1980s, I evolved as a guitarist and songwriter, veering away from The Clash and Sex Pistols influence and into the more mystic musical direction of The Cure, Mission UK, and Cocteau Twins.
My appreciation for beer also changed; preferring the taste of Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout and Ayinger Celebrator, though finding a retailer who carried selective imports was a challenge back then.
These days, I rarely reach for my guitar, but I find I still attend as many concerts as possible. The loud ring of power chords, a driving bass line, and pounding drums capture my heart every time.
Interestingly, I’ve reverted back to drinking more lagers — but not those cheap brands.
Craft breweries in Virginia are thankfully producing excellent pilsners, lagers, and wheat brews.
Summer never tasted so good.
Enjoy a song and a saison!
Cheers,

2025 World Beer Cup Winners From Virginia
By Jeff Maisey
Five independent craft breweries from Virginia took home awards at the 2025 World Beer Cup competition in Indiana’s Indianapolis Convention Center.
The Brewers Association developed the World Beer Cup Competition in 1996 to celebrate the art and science of brewing. Often referred to as “The Olympics of Beer Competitions,” the World Beer Cup is the most prestigious beer competition in the world.
This year, 8,375 entries from 1,761 breweries competed for gold, silver and bronze in 112 categories. There were entries from 49 nations this year including winners from Belgium, Japan, Canada, Peru, Germany, China, The Netherlands, Lithuania, Sweden, Taiwan, Brazil, Argentina, Czech Republic, and Australia.
The most entered style category was Juicy/ Hazy IPA (290 entries).
And the Virginia winners are:
Pilsners are Lagers by Benchtop Brewing Company, International Light Lager category
Hey Girl, Hey by Starr Hill Richmond Beer Hall & Rooftop, Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer category
Yucatán Sunrise by Full Distance Brewing, American-Style Brown Ale category
BRONZE
Afterlife Elixir by Aslin Beer Company, Kellerbier or Zwickelbier category
Boxcar Brown by Caboose Brewing Company, American Brown Ale category
Big Beer Winners
Devils Backbone Brewing Company, in Roseland, won a pair of medals at the World Beer Cup: Dogwood Saison won gold in the Classic Saison category, while Belgian Wheat scored a silver as a Belgian-style Witbier.
Albemarle Cider Works Wins in Germany
Virginia’s Albemarle Cider Works entered a trio of ciders for the Cider World international competition in Frankfurt, and all three entrees won gold: Brut d’Albemarle Orchard Blush, Crab Medley, and Brut d’Albemarle Harrison.
“This is our fourth vintage of Orchard Blush,” said Associate Cidermaker David Timmerman. “We blended our Orchard Blush base with GoldRush and Arkansas Black cider to get the right balance of color and flavor. Then we went big — using traditional bottle fermentation to create a sparkling champagne-style rosé cider. This is one of my favorite ciders to make, and I’m proud of how well it was received at CiderWorld in Frankfurt.”
Sense of Place Lager
Caiseal Beer & Spirits Company’s newly unveiled Langley Lager is as local as it gets.
We love the artwork, localized theme and name of this beer acknowledging the importance of Langley Air Force Base, NASA Langley, and the race cars that zoom ‘round the circular track at Langley Speedway in Hampton. The 5.7% ABV provides some real vroom to a lager.
Virginia Craft Beer Cup Date
Announced
The Virginia Craft Brewers Guild announced August 11 as the date for its statewide Craft Beer Cup Gala event at the Farm Bureau Center in Doswell near the State Fair grounds.
Independent craft breweries from across the Commonwealth enter beers in a wide variety of categories in hopes of winning a gold, silver or bronze medal.
The overall “Best in Show” beer earns the Virginia Craft Beer Cup trophy to hoist like a Stanley Cup hockey champion — it’s nearly the same size.
Head of the Class
One of the greatest complaints about American craft beer is its lack of good head.
Visit Germany or Czech Republic, order a pilsner or lager, and the beer is presented with a meringuelike head that remains and laces the glass to the last drop.
Hoping to encourage similar results, Sojourn Fermentory in Suffolk is hosting “Foam Jam — A Lager Than Life Festival,” on June 21, focusing on lagers and traditional foam culture.
When It Rains It Pours — Beer
If you’ve recently visited Brothers Craft Brewers’ website or brewery you’ll notice something unusual.
No, it’s not a leftover April Fool’s Day prank.
The brewery has changed its name to Feel The Rain Brothers Brew Co.
An employee said the change resulted from a cease and desist order filed by a restaurant chain in the Midwest.
The brewery was originally known as Three Brothers, but changed it to Brothers Craft Brewing in 2015. Each name change has occurred in April.
In addition to the latest name switch, the brewery’s website teases of additional change:
“We’ve been at it for nearly twelve years and counting, and we’ve got some big and exciting changes on the horizon,” a statement reads. “Through the good and the bad, we try to keep looking forward and staying positive. We want to share that outlook as our family heads into a new chapter of growth and change: ‘Some people feel the rain, some people just get wet.’
“Introducing Feel the Rain Brothers Brew Co. We’ll see ya down the road...literally. Stay tuned for more details this Fall.”

The grand opening is expected in late July.

Almost Heaven: Chilly Hollow Brewing Company
By Michael T. Jarvis
John Denver never visited Chilly Hollow Brewing Company in Berryville but it sure feels like it’s almost heaven thanks to the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River.
“Come chill at Chilly Hollow” is not just the brewery’s motto but it’s also a plan. Built on a sprawling working cattle farm, the brewery is an instant decompression zone with exceptional beer, food and fun. Even the mascot on their logo, a bull drinking a bottle of beer, looks like he’s having a blast
Chilly Hollow is definitely rural and it’s growin’ like a breeze. It can get really packed with crowds on weekends, just like its neighbors from the eastern side of the Blue Ridge — Dirt Farm Brewery and Bear Chase Brewing Company and is a great place to people-watch with beer or wine.
But this 7,500-square-foot brewery feels more like a lodge or resort thanks to the high-end materials hand-picked by the owners, long-time builders in the area. The atmosphere and the agricultural setting make for a nice comfortable
respite for large groups and families. Cattle graze in the shade of oak trees beyond the big meadow with the Blue Ridge as a backdrop.
Opened in November 2024, it was built by Shannon Dulaney, and his wife, Stephanie, in partnership with her brother Wayne Warfield and his wife Dee Dee. After building for decades in the housing industry with Warfield Homes, a Berryville construction company founded by the Warfield’s parents in the 1980s, the couples decided to add another piece to their successful cattle and construction businesses.

CHRISTMAS
IN JULY Saturday, July 12
6 Annual Holiday with the Cops Fundraising Event & Holiday Market th Great Beer, Food, & Live Music
A cattle farm and a brewery may not sound like it would be a great match, but it actually works out quite well. The spent grain from the brewing process is fed to the cattle, which become many foods. The farm’s ground beef, t-bone steaks, porterhouses, ribs, sirloin steak, chuck roast and brisket are all sold in the gift shop. Stephanie even makes hand soaps from rendered beef tallow.
There is a lot of synergy at this laid-back venue which also has some wild animals that sometimes mosey around. On a recent afternoon, almost on cue, two tom turkeys in their full feathered glory came strutting’ their stuff right down the hill from the huge patio. Deer and bear and even bobcats make periodic cameos. “One of our calves got attacked a year ago by a bobcat,” says Wayne. “It literally tore the hide off it. She has a scar to prove it.”
The idea to add beer to the mix materialized like the fog that rolls up from Chilly Hollow. A larger-than-life man who puts the Shannon in the Shenandoah, Shannon is the type of guy that will say, “I’ll tell you one thing” and then proceeds to tell you 20 things. He worked decades as a manufacturing engineer, including at Rubber Maid in Winchester, before joining the family construction business. After buying an old dairy farm in 1996, they built and lived in homes near the farm.
In 2019, they started thinking about building a brewery. They learned the brewery business by trial and error. “We
Bear Chase Lane, Bluemont,
thought we had to grow all our hops,” says Shannon. “We went to a hops conference in North Carolina. We thought, “This sucks. We let it go. Then we talked to the guys at Old 690 Brewery and other breweries and we kind of got serious. At that point, we had our plans, we got the soil tested, and acquired our permitting. Things started falling into place.”
When it was just cattle in the hollow, it definitely did not seem like a likely place for a brewery, Shannon says.
“We’re in our mid-50s and thought maybe we’d take a pause. We are a strong, faithful family and I believe the Lord put us here. It meshed really good. We all said, ‘Let’s do it!’ We bought the brewing system assets from Rocket Frog, a 15-barrel system in August 2023 and filled the hay barn and other structures with it. They were selling their location, and the system was from 2018. So, it was pretty new. We asked if they would sell just the assets. We felt this was a better match than an industrial parkway. You need to have good beer and an enjoyable atmosphere. Then, we had to build the brewery. We went high-end and quality on everything. Stamped concrete patio, tongue and groove ceiling. We wanted it to be nice. All the posts are from giant white oak trees and were milled onsite.”
The business has not been all smooth sailing even with the huge crowds, says Shannon. “We’ve added a whole ‘nother building. We had no idea how the weather can affect this business. We’ve been iterating our way. The kitchen and food have been a huge challenge.” In addition to marketing director Madeline Dulaney, about 10 or more family members work the brewery.
The big draw — in addition to the giant patio — at Chilly Hollow is its primo beer. The water filtration system alone was a six-figure investment and is the same type used by the White House. Chris Jacques is a highly talented veteran
brewer, formerly with Lost Rhino and Quattro Goombas, who started in August and was on tap just in time for the November 2024 opening. Stouts, blondes, IPAs and even a great sour are available on a rotation. Jacques advises those with Celiac or a high gluten intolerance to stay away from the beer even though is gluten reduced.
Dulaney’s Irish Stout should make Guinness nervous. Blue Ridge Fog is fermented with the Hornidal Kveik yeast strain and is hopped with some of the “sexiest” hops around, including Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe. Cattle Driver Kolsch is worth the ride
This is a laidback “No bull” environment (despite the cattle, the logo, and of course The Winery at Bull Run wines) and offers a ginormous playground area for children and a massive patio perfect for vegging out. The food at Chilly Hollow is definitely a bright spot, compared to some breweries that run more beer-oriented operations. The farm-to-table burgers served only on Saturdays and Sundays, and after 4pm on Fridays are excellent. Another popular item is the Pretzel Charcuterie Board, a steeringwheel size salty pretzel loaded with charcuterie meats, olives, and cheeses.
It’s always open to the public and it’s easy to see why memberships at the brewery sold out in 2025. More memberships will be available in October.
