WELCOME TO THE GENWORTH VIRGINIA 10 MILER

We are thrilled you’ve decided to race with us this year! The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler is an iconic event that exemplifies community spirit, and dovetails nicely with Genworth’s commitment to wellness and improving the health and quality of life of everyone in this community. Central Virginia is a special place with special people. We are proud to be part of this showcase event and support the passionate people who make it better every year. Thank you volunteers, organizers, sponsors, & charitable organizations – your support is truly inspirational. And finally, to all of the race participants, thank you for choosing to race in Lynchburg, for showing us the results of your hard work, and for giving us the opportunity to cheer you to the finish line. Have a fantastic race everyone!

On behalf of The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler organizing committee and the Lynchburg Road Runners, thank you for your participation in one of our country’s most historic and storied road races. You are following in the footsteps of thousands of participants and volunteers that have experienced the hospitality of one of America’s most friendly running communities; Lynchburg, Virginia. Our volunteers, partners, and sponsors have worked tirelessly to make your race day special. A special thank you to all that have donated countless hours to make our course safe, inviting, and most of all… fun! Tens of thousands have crossed the finish line you are seeking. For some, this journey began with supportive family and friends as they accepted the challenge of a 10-mile run, 4-mile run, or 4-mile walk. For others it has been a challenge of fitness, health and making a significant lifestyle change. Perhaps a corporate challenge or improving on last year’s performance is what got you out the door on those humid mornings this summer. Whatever your motivations, we celebrate this day of “community” and congratulate you on your accomplishment. Your enthusiasm and energy is what makes The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler the amazing day it is each year. Best of luck to each of you on race day. I look forward to seeing you at the finish line. Sincerely,

Jeff Fedorko Race Director

SPECIAL GUEST

MOLLY BARKER

FOUNDER, GIRLS ON THE RUN We are pleased to host Molly Barker, Founder of Girls on the Run, as our special guest for The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler events. A four-time Hawaiian Ironman Triathlete, Barker is a great role model, passionate about running, and is dedicated to encouraging the lives of adolescents. Girls on the Run is an organization that serves over 200,000 girls and women each year in over 220 cities. Molly’s inspiration for founding the program in 1996 was her own experience during adolescence. During middle school, Molly found herself challenged to conform to what she calls the Girl Box. Barker explains, “The Girl Box is a phrase we coined that describes that place many young girls go around middle school... where they begin to set aside their authentic selves and try to fit into cultural stereotypes.” She

felt she never fit into these societal expectations and lives to encourage young women who feel similarly. Molly chose to use running as the platform for reaching young women because of its power in her own life—her own personal escape. Barker reflects, “Running for me is that one safe space in the day where I feel connected... beautiful... whole.” When asked her favorite thing about races, Molly says she considers it a privilege to be part of events that can be defining moments in individuals’ lives. She remarks, “My favorite thing about race events is knowing that every single person on the race course, including the volunteers, has a story to tell.”

A WORD FROM MOLLY Molly coaches individuals to choose a word to focus on while striving to complete a difficult distance. Her encouragement for runners of The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler is: “Set an intention for the race by claiming one word and then seeing if you can hold onto it. Use the word to bring you back to the event. For example... say you choose the word joy. Hold onto that word and when you start to feel yourself get tired, be joyful.”

Thursday, 24th: Chamber of Commerce Luncheon Saturday, 26th: Awards stage, announcing, and more! Less than 3% of finishers in 1976 were women. Last year, in 2014, a total of 624 women accounted for 45% of all 10 mile finishers.

A MESSAGE FROM CHAP Greetings! On behalf of the Coalition for HIV Awareness and Prevention (CHAP), I would like to enthusiastically welcome all runners, walkers, volunteers and spectators to the 2015 Genworth Virginia 10 Miler. A portion of the proceeds from The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler benefit CHAP and its mission to provide free HIV testing and counseling throughout Central Virginia. CHAP is non-profit organization run by volunteers whose goal is to reduce the spread of HIV infection and ensure a compassionate response to all individuals both infected and affected by the HIV epidemic.

Similar to your training for the challenging running and walking events that are part of The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler, CHAP’s approach to HIV/AIDS is that of a long distance event and not a sprint. CHAP is looking forward to a bright future of advances in HIV/AIDS testing and treatment that will help our community prevent the spread of HIV. In partnership with the Lynchburg Road Runners Club and as a result of your support through The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler, we plan to continue helping local individuals and families impacted by HIV for many years to come. Please visit CHAP’s website (www.chapcva.org) or like us on Facebook to learn more about CHAP. Many thanks for your help and good luck to all!

Robert Owen Brennan, MD, FACP, FIDSA Medical Director Coalition of HIV Awareness and Prevention

CHAP is thrilled to celebrate our 15th Anniversary in 2015! For the past 15 years, CHAP has provided free HIV tests to thousands of local individuals, helped those infected with HIV find services and treatment, and educated the community about HIV and AIDS. It is because of people like you who support CHAP by participating in The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler that CHAP’s outreach efforts are a success. Thank you!

Since 1974, The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler has lived up to its reputation of being “Where Southern Hospitality Meets the Road.” The race has grown to be loved for its diverse course, friendly community and tremendous history. In fact, the history of road running in Lynchburg is interlaced with the history of the race itself. The Lynchburg Road Runners Club (LRRC) was formed in 1973 with one goal, a 10-mile footrace in Lynchburg. With that in mind, Rudy Straub, Bernie Smith and many others dreamed of all that the Virginia 10 Miler would become. In 1974, the first race ran with 188 participants. Less than 3% of finishers in 1976 were women. Last year, in 2014, a total of 624 women accounted for 45% of all 10-mile finishers.

One runner, Bill Draper, has faithfully run each race to this day. When asked his favorite thing about the race, Bill Draper remarked, “the congeniality and friendliness of people—everyone wants to help!” An inspiration at age 87, he lives by the idea that “if you can exceed what is demanded, do it!”

The highest number of Virginia 10 Miler finishers was 2,470 in 1983.

First Colony Life provided the financial backing for the first 25 years of the race as title sponsor, and that tradition resumed in 2008 when Genworth became title sponsor. Elite runners and Olympians have proudly graced our streets through the years, including Bill Rogers, Frank Shorter, Rod Dixon, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Dick Beardsley, and Grete Waitz. World-class running returned to Lynchburg beginning in 2007 and continues to be a testament to the heart and soul of the race’s founders. The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler has won various awards since its inauguration. In 1978, Runners World named it The Friendliest Road Race in America. In addition, it was named Road Race of the Year in 2014 by the Road Runner’s Club of America (RRCA). The beauty, history and

With the addition of The Virginia 4 Miler in 1999, the Amazement Square Amazing Mile Children’s Run in 2001 and the Virginia 4-Mile Walk in 2010, the weekend has become a festival of events celebrating community and attracting thousands, bringing the whole city of Lynchburg alive.

VOLUNTEERS A REPUTATION FOR HOSPITALITY One of the most important elements of every successful Genworth Virginia 10 Miler is the support of community volunteers. Last year, 1,576 volunteers made our weekend of events possible, exemplifying the friendliness and generosity that continue the tradition: “Where Southern Hospitality Meets the Road.” Every year, our volunteers execute the weekend with excellence, helping each and every element to culminate in total harmony. Equally, volunteers express how much they enjoy being a part of the weekend. Any volunteer would testify to the reward in participating, cheering on runners, offering solutions when problems arise, etc. Special thanks goes to each volunteer giving time and energy this year to make our

16 FUN FACT

events run smoothly. When asked to describe our race volunteers, Assistant Race Director Josh Yeoman answers, “hospitable, energetic, faithful,” all characteristics to which any race participant or sponsor can testify. Yeoman continues, “Anyone who has run the The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler can attest to the energy our volunteers put out on race day.“ Indeed, every participant of The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler events can agree. Susan Coalson (see page 18) reflects that her favorite part of the event is “spectators that come out and the volunteers; they are just huge to the entire event.” An even bigger thanks to the individuals, corporate sponsors, non-profits, churches and more that continue to volunteer year

after year. Yeoman gives recognition to these individuals, remarking, “We have many volunteers that have been with the race for 30-40 years, and several that have worked every year since 1974.” Credit for our reputation of hospitality can only be given to these that have invested in our history and growth.

TIPS FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED BY: LYNCHBURG AMATEUR RADIO CLUB

Come prepared with water, appropriate clothing, and perhaps a snack. Get into the spirit and cheer the runners on. Come with a good attitude and the wherewithal to endure long hours. Have fun!

fostering friendly competition among local organizations Each year, local companies sponsor their employees to participate in The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler, Virginia 4 Miler and Virginia 4-Mile Walk. This year, 15 corporations are taking part. The competitive spirit and unity that has developed as a result of corporate race competition are unparalleled and add a unique element to race weekend. Though the competition is all in fun, individuals become very involved in the enthusiasm, resulting in an added motivation for many race participants. Last year, for the first time, Liberty University’s team of 280 participants won all 3 corporate divisions. Jamie Swyers, a representative for Liberty University’s Live Healthy Liberty initiative, comments on the win saying, “It’s been exciting to see Liberty employees taking advantage of opportunities to challenge themselves and

stay active.” The competition has helped to fuel wellness and health initiatives in local organizations, motivating employees to be more active. Assistant Race Director Josh Yeoman explains, “The organizations that participate in the corporate competition are supporting employee participation, which has a very positive impact on our community as whole.” Employees recently inspired to focus on wellness are making big accomplishments by participating in this year’s events. Swyers offers encouragement to new participants, saying, “I would encourage all of the runners not to compare themselves with anyone else but be proud of the fact that they are out there doing their best.” Best of luck to each corporate team during this year’s events!

In 1999, 198 runners participated in the first Virginia 4 Miler.

420 MILES ON THE 42ND YEAR 3 RUNNERS’ MAGNIFICENT FEAT For many, The Genworth Virginia 10 Miler is a major feat of accomplishment in a lifetime. For others, like Susan and Keith Coalson and their friend Janet Vickers, it has become a frequent hobby that they enjoy as often as once each week. In fact, the group ran the 10-mile course 41 times in 2014 and are on schedule to have run it 42 times by the end of race-weekend this year, the number of years the event has been held since 1974. The idea originated in February 2014, as they decided to run the course 41 times that year, 410 total miles: 41 '14 410. Their inspiration came from Bill Draper, who would be running his 41st Virginia 10 Miler that year. About the challenge, Coalson exclaims, "It was a ridiculous amount of fun!" Though there was some anticipation that the course would become monotonous, she now swears it has yet to grow dull, even after what is soon to be 83 total runs in just 20 months. Coalson continues, "there is so much variety in the 10-mile course; I really have never gotten bored." How does the group accomplish the 10-mile course that many times in one year? They often run the course back-to-back, accomplishing 20

miles in one day, which Coalson explained gave them a whole new perspective on the course and helps them to enjoy it even more. The group is surrounded by an increasing number of supporters, friends who run along when possible, and occasional surprise treats along the course. Last year, the challenge culminated to their 40th run on the Saturday prior to race-weekend, in which they were joined by over 40 other runners in a celebratory run. Coalson finds reward in the support shown from the race community. She elaborates, "I love running, but I love running because of the social part and the really great people that get to be a part" and emphasizes that she has never once met a runner she dislikes. Best wishes to these three as they run the 10-mile course for the 42nd time this year!

The highest number of Virginia 10 Miler victories by an individual is 5. Both Jon Sinclair and Tara Wojciechowski hold this record.
