In Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a French couple has converted an old farm into a design-led summer sanctuary.

Follow along as Scottish photographer, Richard Gaston chronicles his travels to selected Vipp guesthouses.

From guesthouse to playhouse As the days stretch longer with midsummer upon us, life moves outdoors. Around tables, in courtyards, and across the city, spring and summer bring a renewed sense of openness - longer conversations, shared meals, games, drinks, and moments spent together.

This feeling became the starting point for our collaboration with Vipp during this year’s 3daysofdesign. We reimagined the Vipp guesthouse as a more open and social space inspired by the atmosphere of the Danish summer: informal, vibrant, and centred around gathering.

At mesura, we approach every project as an opportunity to explore new perspectives and ways of working. Our practice moves across architecture, design, editorial, and research, but regardless of scale or discipline, collaboration remains central to the process. We believe the strongest ideas often emerge through dialogue, experimentation, and curiosity.

Working with Vipp felt like a natural meeting point between our two practices. While coming from different contexts, we share an interest in materiality, atmosphere, and how spaces influence the way people interact. For the installation, we wanted to create an environment that encouraged visitors not only to experience the space, but to slow down, gather, and engage with it in a more informal way.

Throughout the installation, softness meets structure. Textile wraps steel. At the centre, a conversation pit creates a shared landscape for sitting, resting, stretching out, or settling into conversation. Familiar objects are reinterpreted in playful ways, while colour and material create a vibrant and immersive setting inspired by the simple atmosphere of a summer picnic.

The result is a guesthouse shaped less around retreat and more around togetherness - a place designed for gathering, conversation, and play.

Founded in Barcelona, mesura is a multidisciplinary studio working across architecture, interiors, and urban design. Guided by a material-driven approach, the studio explores how spaces are used and experienced in everyday life. Behind the classic blue shutters of a stone house in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a French couple has converted an old farm into a summer sanctuary filled with contemporary art and design.

At the foot of the Alpilles mountains in the heart of Provence lies the picturesque village of SaintRémy-de-Provence. Five years ago, Strasbourg natives, Monique and Régis made this town their second home when they bought a late 18th-century traditional ‘mas’, the French word for farmhouse.

To transform a 250 m² old farm into a destination for future family vacations, the couple hired V8 Designers and Frög Architecture who completed the renovation in 2014. Despite a major renovation of the building, its heritage as a farm is still visible as layers of history have been kept intact.

Home to Van Gogh during his time in a mental asylum, and to flourishing morning markets, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is quite the tourist magnet during the summer. Yet the town evokes a certain calm for the family who resides here three months a year. “Our days are spent biking to the local market, touring neighbouring cities such as Arles and Aix-en-Provence and visiting their many museums. And sometimes we start the vintage Citroën and head to the sea, to one of the hidden calanques of Marseille,” says Monique.

After a two-hour drive from Manhattan, we reach the forest of Lumberland in Pond Eddy, Upstate New York. At the end of a vast lake, a sculptural silhouette appears. At first glance, the building resembles a stone on the pond - seemingly solid but slowly revealing its volumetric form as we approach.

In this newly opened guesthouse, titled, Vipp Pavilion, the architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, founders of the LA-based architecture studio, Johnston Marklee, greet us in the kitchen, where the conversation unfolds around this singular piece of architecture.

About the architects Founded by Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, Johnston Marklee is one of the US’s leading architecture offices, recognized internationally for their award-winning work on residences, galleries, and cultural institutions from the Menil Drawing Institute on the campus of the Menil Collection in Houston and the renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago to the UCLA Graduate Art Studios campus in Los Angeles and the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program at the former studio of Roy Lichtenstein in New York.

In Los Angeles, the firm has played a significant role in the city’s cultural landscape, having designed the West Coast galleries of New Yorkers, Karma and Marian Goodman, plus the studios of Alex Israel, Sterling Ruby, and many more.

The fifteenth guesthouse in Vipp’s portfolio of one-of-a-kind, bookable spaces, the pavilion is a secluded retreat immersed in lush greenery. Four years in the making, the 111-square-metre structure sits on a pond, conceived as a sculptural object, at the edge of a sixteen-acre forest.

Johnston Marklee

Q. What is your favourite aspect of the project?

A. The architecture’s primitive qualities heighten one’s perception of space and atmosphere with subtle inversions of form and material that create unexpected encounters between the building and site.

Q. Which architectural elements are worth highlighting?

A. The relation of the building’s form to its materiality imparts an unexpected atmosphere that inverts one’s perception of inside and outside. The rough texture of the curved interior walls and the ribbed stucco of the façade, that casts a rhythm of vertical shadows on the abstract form, contrast and harmonize with the rustic landscape.

Q. Why concrete and glass as a material choice?

A. The primary materials are ribbed stucco, polished concrete, and wood and aluminium windows. This is an elemental palette of rough and polished, ribbed and smooth, and matte and shiny.

Daylight changes the perception of these finishes through the day, as well weathering over time.

Q. What benefits and challenges do the elliptical shapes possess?

A. The ellipse has multiple centres; as fragments of ellipses, the rooms in the pavilion borrow views from nature to complete their form and unite each space to specific features of the site.

Q. What was the biggest challenge in the construction?

A. The form of the house is not common in this region, but the techniques and elements are – concrete slab, stucco walls, standard framing, and wood windows. The first big challenge was getting the layout of the structure right according to the different radii of the ellipsis of the plan. This was followed by the finishes – the polish on the concrete floor, the trowel of the stucco, the curve of the flashing – without any trim or moulding, the intersection of walls and material finishes left little margin for error.

Q. How is sustainability integrated into this project?

A. Elemental strategies prioritizing nature take advantage of daylight, thermal mass, and passive ventilation to define the pavilion. Skylights and apertures allow natural light to illuminate the interiors; floor-to-ceiling glass doors and operable windows are positioned for fresh air to flow, while the structure’s thick walls, compact footprint, and green roof insulate the living areas and minimize energy demands year-round. Biophilic design guided the project with visual and physical connections to nature from every room; the native meadows and green roof were designed by landscape architect, Larry Weaner.

There’s a quiet confidence to the way Julia Khan Anselmo moves in a kitchen. No rush, no excess, just a steady rhythm shaped by instinct, memory and a sharp eye for detail. In Copenhagen, she steps into Vipp’s V4 kitchen, where stainless steel surfaces and integrated functions set a calm, precise stage. Drawers glide open without sound, the one-piece worktop keeps everything

within reach, and the space allows her to focus on what matters. Julia cooks as she hosts: intuitively, attentively, and always with others in mind. The dish she prepares is simple, but the intention behind it runs deeper - food as a way of gathering, of creating space, of bringing people into the moment.

“The one-piece stainless-steel worktop with integrated sink is such a clever feature. And I love that the drawers are so quiet,” Julia smiles, pulling out utensils. “It makes everything so practical and keeps the noise level in the kitchen down.”

How to make Julia's

GEMISTA A dish inspired by a trip to Greece, Gemista, meaning stuffed.

Ingredients

Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and eggplant filled with rice,

Tomatoes, bell peppers, small round zucchini (your choice of mix)

herbs, and citrus. Simple, generous, and endlessly adaptable.

200g short-grain rice Soft herbs dill, coriander, flat-leaf parsley, etc.

1 lemon zest and juice 1 large onion and 1 small onion 3 garlic cloves A pinch of allspice Olive oil Salt and pepper

Method: 1. Rinse rice well and soak before cooking to achieve the right texture. Boil for 5 minutes and season with allspice.

2. Core vegetables, keep the tops as nicely as possible.

Save the inner flesh (except pepper stems).

*Julia’s tip: Prepare everything the day before and leave it in the pot overnight for even more flavour.*

3. In a large bowl, mix the rice with chopped herbs, lemon zest, and half the large onion.

4. In a cast-iron pan, layer the other half of the onion plus the small onion (thickly sliced) with the reserved vegetable flesh.

Add garlic, and a good sprinkle of olive oil, salt, and pepper.

5. Stuff the vegetables with the rice mixture, cap with their tops, and arrange neatly in the pan.

6. Add water to cover the base (add more if needed).

Cook for 45 minutes over medium heat.

From their captivating office spaces north of Copenhagen, mother and daughter, Charlotte Lynggaard and Sofia Lynggaard Normann shape the artistic vision of Danish jewellery brand Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen.

What began in 1963 as a modest goldsmith workshop has since blossomed into a refined jewellery brand globally admired for its artistic heritage.

This singular creative spirit permeates more than just the jewellery – it is found in every corner of the company’s domicile in Hellerup, north of Copenhagen to such an extent that Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen manifests itself as a design house in every sense.

In a light-filled space atop the newest wing of the headquarters, Charlotte Lynggaard's office forms the company’s creative epicentre from where new ideas are sketched and sculpted. A kaleidoscope of gemstones, fresh flowers, Danish design classics, sketches, Charlotte’s office is a vivid colour scape where it is impossible not to be inspired. Seated at her desk, she draws up new

designs that begin as one-of-a-kind creations and may find their way to the permanent collection.

Charlotte joined the family company in 1987 as a goldsmith apprentice. A love for colourful gemstones has inspired her collections including The Lotus Collection, The Wild Rose Collection and The BoHo Collection.

"I spotted this Vipp chair during Copenhagen’s design festival. It was a bespoke piece upholstered in this wonderful pattern that felt like it had been dreamt up for me. I reached out to Vipp and ordered two more tailored chairs – one for my daughter’s office and one for the Ole Lynggaard Apartment."

In the neighbouring office, Charlotte’s daughter has an equally eye-catching space brimming of curiosities. Echoing the shared muse of three generations of designers, Sofia Lynggaard Normann's office is a treasure trove of natural wonders.

A tide of abundant collections of seashells, sketches of whimsical sea creatures, and swirling ocean waves covers Sofia’s walls and desk. In 2024, she introduced her debut collection Young Fish and Under the Sea interpreting the essence of what hides beneath the surface.

From a deep dive into the blue sea, Sofia’s source of inspiration now soars to the blue skies where birds are a newfound muse. A wall in the office is composed of her sketches of avian animals and a wax sculpture of a bird perched on the desk made together with her father confirm her shift toward ontology. Soon awaiting her first child, Sofia finds herself increasingly drawn to nesting species which will inform an upcoming collection that reflects a new phase of life and design.

The edgy elegance that characterises Sofia’s jewellery design extends seamlessly into her workspace. With an office full of curated detailing even the chair tells a personal story.

From a Danish workshop to the salon floor, the Vipp pedal bin returns to its point of origin.

In 1939, a bin was made for a salon. More than eight decades later, it returns to one. When metalsmith Holger Nielsen crafted the first Vipp pedal bin, it was not intended as a design object but as a practical solution for his wife Marie’s hairdressing salon. Built to meet the demands of daily use, it combined durability with ease of operation - qualities that quickly made it a staple in clinics, practices and salons across Denmark, long before it entered private homes. What began as a tool for professionals became a quiet constant in everyday environments.

Today, the pedal bin finds itself back in a familiar setting.

Developed in collaboration with Copenhagen-based salon Henri, this special edition revisits the bin’s origins while remaining grounded in its original purpose.

Finished in a muted teal tone drawn from the salon’s interior, the colour introduces a softer note to the bin’s industrial materiality. The form remains unchanged, refined over time, but not reinvented.

“If you go back to the beginning , Vipp started in a salon,” says Jette Egelund, daughter of Holger Nielsen. “For decades, the bins were used by professionals before entering private homes. Bringing it back into a salon context feels like closing a circle.”

That sense of continuity runs through the collaboration.

At Henri, tools are selected for longevity, and spaces are shaped by use. At Vipp, products are developed with the same mindset: defined by function, material integrity and a longterm perspective.

Second halt - the sandy dunes of Cold Hawaii, Denmark. Third touchdown – the coastline of Todos Santos in Mexico. Final stop – a traditional hütte in the Austrian Alps. Follow along as Richard chronicles his travel adventures and photographic diary.

FEBRUARY 2026

Todos Santos, Mexico Drawn to the stark beauty of Baja California Sur, I arrived in Todos Santos curious about a guesthouse set between desert and ocean. With its rammed-earth walls, open-plan living spaces, and sweeping Pacific views, the house offered a striking yet understated retreat - a place where architecture and landscape quietly meet.

The rich ambience of the textured interior walls and dappled light cascading through the shutters, paired harmoniously with graceful furniture created beautiful moments for me to capture.

Nature is a subject I photograph often and to work with architecture that has similar properties to the land made this a seamless and fulfilling experience to document.

For me, Todos Santos became a place defined by early mornings, warm light and the reassuring regularity of the sun. Surrounded by raw materials, natural patina and textured walls softened by dappled light, his stay unfolded seamlessly - a fulfilling meeting of nature, architecture and photography.

Lake Immeln, Sweden

SEPTEMBER 2025

Following a slow and calm drive through the peaceful Danish countryside, first arriving at Cold Hawaii was a climatic experience after a long build-up of anticipation. It had been months since this experience was arranged and the travel to get there amplified the experience.

On my arrival, I ecstatically noticed the pyramidal shape of the roof protruding through the lush dunes of the coast. I appreciated the nod to the traditional surrounding vernacular of the area, but with a contemporary approach.

The sense of an old fisherman’s cottage really comes through, but with the modern comforts and tasteful design makes this a dream project for me to document.

The first few days I wandered around the meandering grassy dunes to find an optimal viewpoint of the property that showcases just how well situated it is. The persistent breeze and ever evolving hazy light from the Atlantic sculptured some pristine conditions for photography. You can see how much consideration was taken to form the house into the landscape. Walk 100m in any direction and you would never know it was there. I found a little perch on a mound that I returned to many times in varying light.

The kitchen felt like the core of the house, situated at the centre providing a 360 perspective of inside and out and consequently became the centre stage of the interior imagery as well as centrepiece of the home. It’s where I began my mornings; making breakfast, drinking my coffee, planning my day, all my equipment ended up landing on the kitchen counter and became somewhat of a studio space until I’d clear the decks for dinner time.

After a couple of days of soft cloudy weather, on the third evening I first encountered a rich golden hour glow followed by a vibrantly coloured sunset which the living room window perfectly framed. They made for some of my favourite shots from the series.

Montafon, Austria

APRIL 2026

Each of Vipp’s guesthouses are architecturally unique but always offers richness in silence and respite. I believe Montafon Haus is the oldest building in Vipp’s portfolio and it’s one of the most diverse. Especially considering how many corners of the property there are to settle into.

This property is particularly peaceful; it’s incredibly quiet inside. The silence is only broken by the church bells or the occasional and welcomed farm noise.

My experience at Vipp Montafon Haus was the ideal balance between something authentically and traditionally Austrian but with contemporary comforts.

What intrigued me was the juxtaposition between the old and the new, especially between the modern stairs and the traditional charming doorways.

When photographing a property’s exterior, I tend to stay clear of midday sunshine, but those daytime vibrant colours are quintessential to the Alps: the blue skies, grey mountains, green grass meadows with yellow accents. I explored the circuit route around Lünersee. The path along the river is a beautiful way to spend a morning running, walking or cycling.
