KREWE OF EVE | KREWE OF PRIMA DONNAS | MARDI PAWS PARADE

From the Editor

As the echoes of Mardi Gras 2025 fade, we reflect on a season that once again showcased the vibrant spirit and resilience of our Northshore community. From the dazzling floats of the Krewe of Eve to the high-energy performances of the Prima Donnas, our local parades brought creativity, joy, and a sense of unity to the streets. And, of course, Mardi Paws had our four-legged friends leading the way in their annual celebration of fun and philanthropy.

Beyond the beads and boas, this issue also shines a light on our Bankers and Beads feature, highlighting the local financial institutions that support Northshore businesses, families, and economic growth. These industry leaders are not just safeguarding assets—they’re investing in the future of our community.

At Social Northshore, our mission extends beyond covering events. We are committed to being a resource—a platform that elevates local businesses, spotlights community leaders, and highlights nonprofit organizations making a difference. MADISON BROOKS

TURNING TRAGEDY INTO IMPACT

Out of unimaginable loss, the Madison Brooks Foundation was born—a nonprofit dedicated to creating lasting change in honor of Madison Brooks, an SSA alum, LSU sophomore, and Alpha Phi sorority member. After Madison’s tragic passing, her family channeled their grief into a powerful mission: to provide financial resources to those in need, advocate for young adult safety, and raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.

Since its formation in January 2023, the foundation has been unwavering in its commitment to making a difference. Through scholarships, education, and community partnerships, it strives to ensure Madison’s legacy is one of protection, opportunity, and hope. In May 2024, a major milestone was reached when the foundation successfully funded The Madison Brooks Scholarship at LSU, ensuring that future students will benefit from the generosity inspired by her memory.

In addition to scholarships, the foundation hosts community education events focusing on safety awareness, bystander intervention, and sexual assault prevention. By partnering with LOPA (Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency), it also promotes the life-changing impact of organ donation. These initiatives have already touched many lives, but the foundation’s goals reach even further.

Like any new nonprofit, funding and financial sustainability remain a challenge. Balancing fundraising efforts with providing resources is a constant effort, but the support from donors and volunteers has been instrumental. The foundation has relied on private donations to operate, but now, for the first time, it will hold a public fundraiser—Paint the City Pink at Desi Vega’s on March 30th. This event will mark an important step toward expanding the foundation’s outreach and impact.

Community involvement is key to the foundation’s success. Whether through donations, volunteering, fundraising, or simply spreading awareness, every effort makes a difference. Social media engagement, word-of-mouth advocacy, and participation in foundation events all contribute to expanding Madison’s legacy of safety, education, and giving.

The foundation has already formed powerful partnerships with organizations

like Invisawear, Girls Rides at LSU, LOPA, Lafasa, and other nonprofits with similar missions. A particularly meaningful collaboration is developing with Baylie’s Wish Foundation, working together to provide safety education and resources for college students. The ultimate vision? To ensure that no other family has to endure such a heartbreaking loss. The foundation is working toward expanding resources to universities across the country, providing safe transportation options for students late at night and on weekends.

Through strength, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to advocacy and change, the Madison Brooks Foundation is determined to turn tragedy into impact. Madison’s light continues to shine through every life touched by this mission, ensuring that her legacy will not only be remembered but will also protect and empower generations to come.

Why Print Marketing Still Matters

In today’s hyper-digital world, the benefits of print marketing are undeniable:

Tangibility: Print offers something digital cannot—a physical connection. People can touch, hold, and save it.

Trust and Credibility: A printed piece conveys permanence and trust, cutting through the noise of fleeting digital ads.

Emotional Connection: Print engages the senses and evokes nostalgia, creating a more profound brand bond.

P OWER O F P RINT

Longevity: Unlike digital ads that disappear in seconds, print materials stick around and often get passed along to others.

Less Competition: With inboxes overflowing, print offers a rare opportunity to stand out.

Multi-Sensory Impact: The texture of a highquality brochure or the scent of an innovative direct mail piece makes print memorable.

Personalization: Advances in technology allow for hyper-targeted and customized print campaigns.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career?

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of active listening—truly understanding what others need or ask for makes all the difference in providing meaningful responses. It's not just about delivering information but about connecting and adapting to the person you’re engaging with. Treating people the way they want to be treated fosters trust and respect, creating more positive and effective interactions.

What’s a common misconception about banking?

A common misconception about banking is that it’s all about making profits at the expense of customers. While banks are businesses that need to remain financially stable, the truth is that they play a crucial role in supporting individuals, families, and communities by offering products and services designed to help people manage their finances, invest, and build wealth. Banking is not just about transactions—it’s about creating long-term relationships and contributing to the overall economic health of society.

How does your bank support local businesses and economic growth?

Our bank is the #1 SBA lender in the state of Louisiana, and we are deeply committed to supporting local businesses and economic growth. By providing crucial financing options, we help entrepreneurs access the capital they need to start and expand their businesses, which in turn creates jobs and strengthens the local economy. Supporting local communities and businesses is a core part of our mission, as we believe that fostering economic growth at the grassroots level leads to stronger, more vibrant communities.

What’s your most memorable Mardi Gras experience?

I’m originally from Mississippi, where Mardi Gras is celebrated, but it’s not quite as big as it is in Louisiana. I moved to Louisiana last year, so this past Mardi Gras was my first true experience. A week later, I’m still recovering—I had a huge time! I love any reason to celebrate, and I’m already looking forward to many more Mardi Gras celebrations in Louisiana.

Habaneros Mandeville has been serving bold Mexican flavors since December, in a space thoughtfully designed to create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re looking for a lively dining experience or a more intimate setting, we’ve got you covered.

For those seeking a private and exclusive experience, our private room is perfect for business meetings, birthday celebrations, and special events.

THE BALANCING ACT OF A SUPER MOM

For Melissa LeBlanc, being a mother isn't just a title—it’s a lifelong commitment to love, sacrifice, and hard work. As an SBA Lender at American Bank, a community institution that has been serving clients for over 60 years, Melissa has built a career dedicated to helping businesses grow. But beyond the professional world, her most cherished role is being a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Melissa’s story is one of dedication and balance. Married to her high school sweetheart, she and her husband have built a beautiful family that includes two sons, two daughters, and two grandchildren. Managing a full-time career while raising a family has had its challenges, but for Melissa, it’s about learning how to juggle responsibilities while still making time for life’s most precious moments.

“Being a working mom is all about balance,” she shares. “It’s about getting your job done while also making time for the fun things in life.”

Melissa LeBlanc

For Melissa, working outside the home has not only shaped her career but has also instilled valuable life lessons in her children. They have grown up understanding the importance of teamwork, as everyone in the family pitches in to make things work. “It has taught them commitment,” she says. “They see that we all contribute, and it strengthens our bond.”

At 51, Melissa looks back at her journey with immense pride. “I can achieve whatever I put my mind to,” she says, a lesson that has guided her through her professional and personal life. But the accomplishment she holds dearest is the life she and her husband have built together—a life filled with love, resilience, and the fruits of hard work. “Providing for our family has made me a better mother and a better businesswoman. I strive to be the best lender I can be because I want to set an example for my children.”

Through all the hustle, Melissa remains intentional about creating special moments with her family. Their traditions— family vacations, outdoor movie nights, and their beloved “Best Memories of the Year” jar, which they read together every New Year’s Eve—are what keep them close. More than anything, she wants her children to remember that she was always there when they needed her. “At the end of the day, their happiness is all that really matters to me.”

Her children, in turn, have taught her one of life’s most valuable lessons: the importance of time. “Each day with them is a gift,” she reflects. “Their childhood goes by in the blink of an eye.”

Melissa LeBlanc embodies what it means to be a Super Mom—a woman who balances work, family, and love with grace and determination. Her story is a testament to the power of commitment, the strength of family, and the legacy of hard work.

At Dr. Todd S. Brasuell Pediatric Dentistry, our mission is to treat each child as if they are our own, to deliver the highest quality dental care, to introduce dentistry to children in a fun and entertaining environment, and to emphasize pediatric dentistry at a young age that will last a lifetime!

We created our Dental Savings Plan because we believe that everyone should have access to this quality care. Consistent dental visits not only provide your child optimal oral care but are the best way to keep dental treatment costs down. It is also a great alternative for children that do not have dental insurance or that have recently lost their dental coverage.

Our Dental Savings Plan is designed to provide greater access to affordable and quality dental care at reduced rates.

ABITA SPRINGS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

3RD GRADE TEACHER

MATH/SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES

TEACHERfeature

Who in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

I became a teacher after being a stay-at-home mom for years, my daughters had amazing teachers who made learning exciting, but also showed genuine care for each student, and each students’ success. The way that they inspired confidence, and curiosity made me realize how powerful education can be. I aspire to be like those women who are selfless and dedicated every day.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?

As a teacher, my biggest challenge is balancing the diverse needs of my students while maintaining a high standard of learning. Every student comes with their own unique strengths and challenges and ensuring that I can give each one the attention that they need, while ensuring that the whole class is engaged.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching?

The most rewarding aspect of teaching is seeing a student understand something that they initially struggled with or witnessing their growth and development over time. It is deeply fulfilling to watch a student gain confidence in their abilities, whether it is solving a problem, taking on new challenges or mastering a skill.

How do you make learning engaging and fun for your students?

Making learning fun and engaging often involves incorporating hands on activities that allow students to be active participants in their own learning. I try to use a variety of activities such as group discussions, games, technology and real-world activities. Encouraging curiosity through open ended questions and fostering success through small wins can make learning fun and exciting.

If you could leave your students with one lasting message, what would it be?

Never stop being curious. Mistakes are part of the process, so don’t be afraid to fail. I have a sign right before you leave my room that says “Before you leave this class, always remember, I love you. You matter. You can do anything. I believe in you.”

“Many years ago I had the great good fortune to be referred to a holistic Vet in Mandeville, La. named Dr. G. Cayenne and I made the 6-hour (minimum) round trip many times for acupuncture and other holistic care at VetNaturally. The care my boy received there was stellar, and he got better. Dr. G is just a brilliant holistic vet.

It’s been at least 6 years since Cayenne was a patient of Dr. G’s at VetNaturally, and still they kept up with Cay’s health issues. They sent a beautiful sympathy card when he crossed the bridge, with every member of the staff signing it... even those I had never met. And today, this came in the mail.

I’m not crying, you’re crying. Thank you VetNaturally.”

Hey everyone! I'm a southern Louisiana native, part time surgical tech, and part time artist. I’ve always had a passion for painting and Jesus ever since I was a little girl. It is my hope through my artwork and passion that I can spread the same love and joy that the Lord has shown me. I hope you enjoy my pieces as much as I have enjoyed creating them.

Direct FROM THE GROWERto You

The idea for Garden Spot of Mandeville began decades ago when Judy King started growing ferns in greenhouses on her property, in Bush, Louisiana. Ferns take a while to grow to a size in which they are sellable and so Tommy, King’s husband, started growing vegetables to sell since they are faster and smaller. It was at this time he realized the potential of growing annuals and perennials and selling them to friends.

Word began to spread and people from all over started coming to the greenhouses in search of beautiful plants. They eventually had the idea to open The Garden Spot of Franklinton, an outdoor store created to sell locally grown, quality plants. The store became very popular, enticing people from all over and so the King’s decided to open a store in Mandeville to reach a larger audience.

Thus Garden Spot of Mandeville was born and today both locations are run by Tommy and Judy’s daughter, Sandy, and her husband Tony. Just as they started, annuals and perennials are still grown at the local greenhouses and both locations continue to serve their communities well with high quality, locally grown plant materials and expert customer service.

Garden Spot of Mandeville is a family-owned retail garden center, offering customers a wide selection of high-quality products. Our annuals and perennials are grown at our nursery located in Bush, Louisiana, and our shrubs and trees are sourced from local nurseries so you can rest assured that your plants are coming directly from the grower to you.

STHS names local healthcare veteran Jack Khashou new chief operating officer

[COVINGTON, LA] – Jack Khashou, a Northshore healthcare leader with more than 30 years of experience, has been named chief operating officer of St. Tammany Health System.

He succeeds Sharon Toups, who will retire after serving in the role for 23 years.

“Those who know Sharon know she leaves big shoes to fill,” Khashou said. “But as part of her legacy she also leaves a thriving health system built upon patient experience, operational excellence, colleague collaboration and quality care. Those characteristics will remain central to everything we do at every level of the health system, and I am honored to build on the strong foundation Sharon forged to continue to meet and exceed the needs of our community.

“I also look forward to continuing to work with the St. Tammany Health System Board of Commissioners, leadership and with physicians throughout our community to maintain the health system’s status as the premiere destination for healthcare on the Northshore.

In his new role, Khashou will be responsible for daily operations of the health system, including oversight of ancillary and support departments.

Khashou began his healthcare career in April 1993 and has held leadership positions –including a previous stint as COO – at for-profit and non-profit health systems throughout South Louisiana. He has been a part of St. Tammany Health System for the past 11 years.

Most recently, he has served as administrator of St. Tammany Cancer Center – A Campus of Ochsner Medical Center, a joint venture of St. Tammany Health System and Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center; and as vice president in charge of St. Tammany Health System’s St. Tammany Quality Network, a clinically integrated medical alliance of more than 300 Northshore physicians dedicated to delivering quality care at affordable costs.

To uphold and elevate this status, we will increase our focus on providing whole-person care, leveraging the investments in innovation made over the past several years.”

In welcoming him to his new post, STHS President and CEO Joan Coffman said Mr. Khashou will play a vital part as the health system continues to grow responsibly to meet the needs of the Northshore community.

“While saying goodbye to Sharon is difficult, after

having worked with Jack for the past seven years, I can say with confidence we are blessed to have him continue his career with us,” Coffman said. “St. Tammany Health System is currently enjoying an extended period of unprecedented growth, and with Jack guiding operations, we are well positioned to continue serving our community with the compassion and quality upon which the STHS name has been built.”

Khashou’s appointment as COO was the culmination of a national search for Toups’ successor. He will assume his duties immediately upon her retirement.
