SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

From the Editor
June on the Eastern Shore brings sunshine, fresh energy, and meaningful moments—and this issue reflects just that. From Stars, Stripes & Style at Fairhope Yacht Club benefitting local Veterans to Shuck Cancer at Oak Hollow Farm and Celebrate Life at The Apiary—focused on community health—we’re celebrating connection and purpose.
We’re grateful to three outstanding local schools for allowing us to celebrate their graduates. Congratulations to the kindergarten class of St. James Episcopal on moving up to first grade, Christ the King’s 8th grade class as they head to high school, and Bayside Academy’s seniors—we can’t wait to see all you’ll achieve!
In this issue, don’t miss SuperMom Suntrease Williams-Maynard, a shining example of purpose and determination. We’re also spotlighting Breighanna Vigor in Community Leader—founder of Stopping Traffick, a nonprofit empowering survivors and raising awareness about human trafficking and online exploitation. We’re certain you’ll enjoy their stories and those of the other inspiring individuals and organizations we’ve featured.
As we step into summer, may this issue inspire you to stay engaged, celebrate often, and continue sharing the spirit of the Eastern Shore.

COMMUNITY leader
Vigor Breighanna

At just 22 years old, Breighanna Vigor is a survivor, a student, an advocate—and the Executive Director of Stopping Traffick, a nonprofit she founded to confront the realities of human trafficking and online exploitation. The seed for the organization was planted in 2020, shortly after her high school graduation and in the midst of a global pandemic. Rooted in her own personal trauma, Stopping Traffick was born from her desire to walk alongside survivors and be the light she once needed.
As Executive Director, Breighanna wears many hats: overseeing the board, organizing fundraisers, conducting interviews, and providing training to organizations and schools on trafficking prevention. She also juggles a full-time job and a master’s program—making time management a crucial skill. “Being vulnerable and sharing my story isn’t easy,” she says. “But every time I speak out, someone reaches out to say, ‘me too.’ That’s when I know this work matters.”

One of her proudest moments came when Stopping Traffick awarded its first Survivor Scholarship to a high school graduate determined to attend college. “I later learned we were walking the same halls at the same university,” she recalls. “It reminded me why I do this work—to support survivors in reclaiming their futures.”
Breighanna is quick to address common misconceptions about trafficking, particularly in suburban and rural areas. “Trafficking isn’t just a big-city issue,” she explains. “The U.S. is the top consumer and producer of child pornography.” She highlights the alarming prevalence of familial trafficking, where the abuser is a known and trusted family member. “It’s far more common than most people realize,” she says. “It involves exploiting the trust inherent in the family unit to manipulate and control the victim.”
Having worked with both local law enforcement and federal agencies, Breighanna hopes to see more interagency collaboration, which she believes is key to stronger investigations and more effective survivor support. Looking ahead, her dream is to open a safe home for survivors in Baldwin County—one of the fastest-growing areas in the U.S. but still lacking critical aftercare resources.
Breighanna’s faith is her foundation. “It gives me the strength to keep going,” she says. “Even when I hear the hardest stories, my faith reminds me that there’s always hope.” She finds peace and renewal in running, using the quiet rhythm of her feet to reflect on the life God has given her.
Through education, advocacy, and survivor support, Breighanna Vigor is bringing light to some of the darkest corners of our world—proving that with faith, courage, and community, healing and change are possible.

JOHN TATER HARRIS Candidate
I’m a business owner, community volunteer, and proud Baldwin County resident. I’ve called this place home for the past 14 years, and I’m running for County Commission because I care deeply about our future. I started Gulf Coast Rental Co. from the ground up, and I understand the hard work it takes to build something lasting. I want to bring that same work ethic and real-world experience to serve the people of District 4.
Why are you running for County Commission?
Baldwin County is growing quickly, and I want to make sure that growth benefits the people who already live here. We need leadership that listens and acts in the best interest of the entire community—not just a few.
What makes you the right person for the job?
I bring practical experience. I’ve run a successful business, managed large construction projects, and worked within tight budgets. I know how to solve problems and get things done without wasting time—or taxpayer dollars.
for Baldwin County Commission, District 4
What issues matter most to you?
Improving roads and infrastructure, protecting property rights, and supporting our first responders and county employees are top priorities. I’m committed to keeping Baldwin County’s growth smart and sustainable— reducing high-density development and preserving the character of our communities, eliminating unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, and making sure local voices guide our future. I’ll also stand strong to keep decisionmaking where it belongs—with the people of Baldwin County.
How do you stay involved in the community?
I serve as Chairman of the Orange Beach Public Safety Committee and sit on the board of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber. My wife and I also support the American Heart Association and co-chaired their 2025 Art for Heart Gala.
What does Baldwin County mean to you?
It’s more than where I live—it’s home. I’m raising my family here, and I’m committed to protecting what makes this county such a special place. taterharris.com

ANDREA FAUST
BOOTH
Candidate for Fairhope City Council, Place 5
What inspired you to run for City Council?
I’m running for City Council because I truly care about Fairhope—it’s not just where I live, it’s where I was born and raised, and where my family has been rooted for five generations. I’ve raised my children here and have cultivated lifelong friendships in our community. I would be honored to continue giving back to the town that’s given so much to me. Fairhope has shaped me, and I feel called to serve and help shape its future.
What experiences have prepared you for this role?
Running a small business in Fairhope has given me a front-row seat to the daily lives, concerns, and hopes of the people in our community. I’ve listened, learned, and built relationships with neighbors from all walks of life. I’ve been able to connect on a deeper level with residents through honest conversation and by being present when it matters most.
What are some of your favorite things about life in Fairhope?
Fairhope is more than a place—it’s a community. It’s sunsets on the bluff, early morning runs by the bay, the charm of our downtown, and the friendly faces you see day to day. It’s about entertaining and cooking for friends in our home, the care we show for our neighbors, and the deep roots that connect generations of families. It’s the people, the places, and the spirit of Fairhope I love so much.
How do you hope to make a difference on the Council?
I believe serving starts with listening. I know how important it is to stay connected to the people you serve. I know how much this town means to the people who live here, and the people of Fairhope are what matter most to me.
Fun Fact: In 2009, I co-produced the documentary The Utopian Fairhope, which highlighted our town’s rich artistic heritage and won the Alabama Showcase Award at the Alabama International Film Festival.

Helping you find your home sweet home anywhere from the Bay to the Beach.
What inspired you to open Butler & Co., and what sets it apart?
Brooke: I wanted to create a space where agents feel valued and clients feel cared for. Our boutique style allows us to focus on relationships over volume, with personalized service at every step.
What values guide your leadership?
Integrity, compassion, and a servant’s heart. Coming from a large family, caring for others is second nature to me. I want both our team and our clients to feel like family.
Tell us about your team.
They’re driven, knowledgeable, and community-minded. Each brings something unique, but we’re united by a shared passion for serving our clients and loving where we live.
How do you stay connected to the community?
Volunteering, sponsoring, and serving on boards and committees—like Junior Auxiliary, National Charity League, and The Haven—is part of who we are. We love supporting local causes and our schools. Giving back is part of our culture—it’s how we stay rooted.

Born and raised in Fairhope, I’m a fourthgeneration resident with deep roots in this community. After years in real estate and building meaningful relationships, opening my own brokerage felt like the natural next step. I founded Butler & Co. to reflect the values I hold dear—faith, family, service, and excellence—and to create a team culture built on genuine support and shared purpose.

A New Era of Compassion Daphne's New State-of-the-Art Animal Shelter
After years of planning and dedication, the City of Daphne celebrated the grand opening of its brand-new animal shelter with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last November. This modern, thoughtfully designed facility replaces the aging shelter on Johnson Road and marks a major milestone for animal welfare in Baldwin County.
Visitors are greeted by a warm, welcoming lobby named in honor of Dr. Albert Corte, Daphne’s first and, for many years, only veterinarian. From 1969 to 1989, Dr. Corte and his team at Highland Animal Hospital cared for the city’s sick, injured, and stray animals—often volunteering his services for over four decades. In 2009, the city formally recognized his unwavering commitment to the community’s most vulnerable creatures.
“This is a public facility designed to invite people in,” said Betsy Schneider, who helped oversee the shelter’s development. “We want people to visit, walk, and play with the animals. I think it’s a game-changer.”
The new shelter includes 24 dog kennels, over 22 cat enclosures, isolation rooms, and dedicated medical spaces, offering more than ten times the space of the previous building. Equipped with six separate ventilation systems, the facility was designed to minimize stress on animals, which improves their chances of adoption.
“They’ve thought of everything—from the tile animals walk on to the air filtration system—all with the goal of making them more adoptable,” said Mayor Robin LeJeune. “It’s not just a shelter—it’s a community center.” The facility even features a classroom space for events, school visits, birthday parties, and educational programs.
Each year, the Daphne Animal Shelter takes in hundreds of animals, many of whom are lost, abandoned, or surrendered. The shelter’s mission is to provide compassionate care, manage the animal population responsibly, and educate the public on responsible pet ownership—all while working to place every animal in a loving home.
The shelter relies heavily on donations and community involvement. Contributions of pet food, cleaning supplies, or monetary donations go directly toward the care of the animals—especially covering rising medical expenses. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter or mailed to P.O. Box 400, Daphne, AL 36526. For credit card donations, call 251-620-2800 or visit the shelter's website at daphneal.com/animalshelter.
1
Shelter Area Naming Opportunities
Permanently name a space in the new Daphne Animal Shelter to honor a pet, loved one, or organization. Your tax-deductible gift leaves a lasting legacy and helps expand vital animal welfare services. Donors will be recognized with a permanent plaque and public acknowledgment through the City's website, social media, and more.

Volunteer & Outreach
Volunteers aged 14 and up (with adult supervision if under 18) are welcomed to help with animal care, socialization, and events. The shelter also collaborates with local rescue groups including The Haven and BARC.

2
Donor Tree Naming Opportunities
Sponsor a leaf on the Donor Tree for $125 to honor a loved one—human or pet—and support the new state-of-the-art facility. Leaves can be purchased on the shelter's website.

4 5 3
Spay & Neuter Programs
The shelter promotes spaying and neutering to prevent overpopulation and improve animal health. Low-income families can apply for BARC vouchers to offset the cost. For more information, call 251-928-4585.

Suntrease WilliamsMaynard Supermom

"My grandmother often reminded me of the biblical principle: To whom much is given, much is required."
— Suntrease Williams-Maynard
Leading with Faith, Family, and Fearless Purpose

Suntrease WilliamsMaynard has worn— and continues to wear—many hats: Deputy City Attorney, servicemember, nonprofit founder, wife, mother, and mentor. But for her, it all begins with purpose.
“Balancing it all comes from a deep sense of purpose and clearly defined priorities,” she says.
“My faith grounds me, and my strong support system—my husband and two children—make sure they play their part. There are no bench warmers on Team Maynard.”
That purpose shines through in The Maynard 4 Foundation, born intentionally on Juneteenth— a powerful and intentional choice that reflects a commitment to opportunity, access, and legacy.
“I’ve wanted to start a national nonprofit since I was young,” she says. “The timing finally aligned when I entered private practice and had the backing of a supportive law firm.”
The foundation uplifts underserved communities and develops future leaders through a range of bold, holistic programs.
Suntrease’s passion for service was shaped by her upbringing in Farmville, Virginia, where the impact of Brown v. Board of Education was deeply felt. “Education is a powerful equalizer,” she says. “That understanding taught me to lead with intention, honor history, and center the needs of the community.”
Her latest initiative, the Miss Juneteenth America Scholarship Pageantry Program®, holds special meaning. “As a teen in pageants, I didn’t feel celebrated for how God created me—even when I was crowned Senior Miss America in 2001,” she recalls. “This program is about creating a space where young women can unapologetically be themselves and walk boldly in their purpose.”

At the core of her leadership is wisdom passed down from her grandmother, Pattie Ann Jackson. “She taught me every opportunity is a gift from God, best honored through hard work, gratitude, and excellence,” says Suntrease. That belief continues to guide her both personally and professionally.
Though she has led youth camps, boot camps, and more, the Miss Juneteenth America Scholarship Pageantry Program®holds a special place in her heart. “It’s transformative,” she says. “It blends leadership development with cultural pride, confidence, and selfworth.”
At home, the Maynards operate as a close-knit team. “After God, family always comes first,” she says. “We rely on each other through every challenge and triumph.”
Being a working mom has deeply enriched her children’s lives. By witnessing her career firsthand—they’ve learned the value of hard work, professionalism, and how to move through the world with confidence.
“I hope my children remember that I did my absolute best to give them the opportunities I never had, while holding tightly to the values that shaped me. They are my greatest inspiration—and the reason I strive to lead with purpose, strength, and love.”

CAM JACKSON Championing Chamber Growth and Community

Since joining the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce as its Membership Director in December 2021, Cam Jackson has made a lasting impact on the Eastern Shore’s business landscape. In 2024, his dedication and relationship-driven approach earned him national recognition: the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) awarded Jackson the Sales Contest Award for achieving an extraordinary 199 new member sales—the highest in the nation for chambers with under $500,000 in annual dues income.
“It’s hard to gauge what success looks like in my role,” Jackson reflects. “So receiving this award was extremely validating. It reinforces that the work I’m doing matters and is making a real impact.”
Behind the impressive numbers is a simple but powerful approach: curiosity, connection, and authenticity. “I stay curious and ask questions to understand each business’s goals and expectations,” he says. “To me, everyone I talk to is an expert, and I always learn something new. Then I make a genuine effort to connect them—with the people they’re looking for, and even the ones they didn’t know they needed.

While the 199-member milestone is remarkable, Jackson recalls one moment that stood out: “Kicking off the year with 33 new members in January—that’s a crazy number for any chamber of any size.”
Jackson credits much of his success to the Chamber team, the Ambassadors, and the welcoming energy of the Eastern Shore business community. “It was a team effort,” he says. “And our members make it easy for new businesses to feel like they belong in a rapidly growing community.”
When tailoring his outreach, Jackson focuses on timing and relevance. “It all starts with listening,” he explains. “Then, I help them make sense of the value the Chamber naturally provides.”
The Chamber’s mission also plays a major role. “We’re here to ensure the Eastern Shore is the best place to live, work, and grow business,” he says. “As the saying goes, all ships rise with the tide.”
Beyond the office, Jackson is an advocate for all things local. “You can find me on Instagram creating content about the 251, attending local events, festivals, and enjoying the nightlife in Downtown Mobile.”
Looking ahead to remaining months of 2025, his focus will be on re-engaging former and less-active members, making sure every business owner feels seen, heard, and connected.
