Thank you for your support of LIFE Senior Services. In the United States, the number of individuals 65 and over increased 38% from 2010 to 2020. In Tulsa, the average lifespan is 76.9 years. These numbers add up to the conclusion that there is so much life to be lived after age 50. Staying connected, active and informed is vital. LIFE is committed to supporting those efforts.

LIFE takes to heart there is no stereotypical senior, so there can be no “onesize fits all” approach to aging. I am proud of the fact that LIFE Senior Services works to stay nimble and meet new challenges with new opportunities to serve.

In 2024, we opened the new Roma Berry Senior Campus. Housed in a former Tulsa Public Schools site, it brings together a PACE clinic, a beautiful Adult Day Health Center and a robust Active Senior Center. Recently I noted music wafting through the air, as our guitar class was strumming away. Tables were filled with folks enjoying games of cards and rummikub. The line dancers were in full swing, the pickleball courts were filled, and others sipped coffee or checked out the juke box. The people there were not a homogenous group, and yet everyone seemed to find something to do, some way to connect with other people. I think that is the true purpose of the center—the activities are merely a means to that end.

There is still lots of good work being done at our other locations. Our North location houses a PACE clinic and Adult Day Health program. Our Broken Arrow location houses an Adult Day Health program and our Central location houses our independent case managers, SeniorLine, caregiver support services, behavioral health services, and our Medicare and tax assistance programs. Our Vintage Magazine staff, volunteer program and Advantage Case Management all work at the Legacy building. So many people working to make sure that as we age, we have what we need to be fulfilled.

Your generous support makes LIFE’s work happen. You ensure that when the phone rings, someone is there to not only answer, but to provide answers. We are so grateful!

Best-

LIFE’S ROMA BERRY CENTER AND SENIOR CAMPUS IS NOW OPEN!

NANCY

ACTIVE SENIOR CENTER MEMBER

“When I used to bring students to the Eastside Senior Center as part of a community health rotation in TCC’s nursing program, we found it easy to discuss the richness of what we all saw and experienced in that little space, from sing-alongs, to dominoes, to yoga, tai-chi, functional movement classes, and line dancing.

However, all of the busy-ness is just sleight of hand that hid the real gold in the center. The common thread was community, which was obviously a lifeline for most of the people we met.

Upon retiring, I hesitated to admit that I could benefit from being a member. Once I did and began line dancing, I plugged into a community.

Now, when I turn the corner onto S. 72nd Ave, I love to see the beautiful garden and sparkly new building and I am grateful that all this community holds is mine to share...kinda like the National Parks! I hope to visit them as well.”

ACTIVE SENIOR CENTERS

Active Senior Center Members

6,217 Activities offered to active adults age 50+ thanks to a generous grant from United Healthcare

Serving as gathering sites for the area’s active 50 and better community, LIFE’s two Active Senior Centers creatively engage and empower local seniors. In 2023, the centers linked older adults who can operate independently to a rich variety of programs that support healthy aging. With a little something for everyone, seniors can find a combination of social, creative, educational, and fitness events which keep seniors active and connected. Participants enjoy activities such as line dancing, card games, pickleball, art, music, theater, and so much more.

In 2024, our Active Senior Centers merged together at the new, Roma Berry Center for Seniors. The new Roma Berry Center will facilitate expanding program content with better, more flexible spaces and the ability to operate on evenings and weekends.

After your work career ended, what drew you to LIFE’s Active Senior Center?

“I didn’t want to just sit at home and do nothing. The Senior Center makes me feel better. I enjoy the friends and activities. My husband died in 2014 and it was a pleasure to be here with people, it really helped. I met Jack here, he’s been a good friend. I go over to his house on the weekends and help him with things he needs. That makes me feel like I’m helping somebody. If it wasn’t for LIFE’s Senior Centers, I don’t know where I’d be.”

ADULT DAY HEALTH

3 Number of ADH Sites

257

Total participants, including adults with disabilities, served

We have designed LIFE’s Adult Day Health (ADH) program to provide the care needed for seniors to remain living at home, but who need somewhere safe to go during the day. Frequently their caregivers work, have other daytime responsibilities, or need respite, and it isn’t always prudent to leave their loved one at home. ADH also provides an option for seniors and adults with disabilities to experience a safe, friendly, and therapeutic setting.

29,170

Total days of care and services for all participants

Daily ADH activities are designed to maintain, enrich, and enhance physical and mental capabilities. The program also offers health and nursing services, physical and occupational therapy, medication management, and personal care. Because the ADH program, facilities, and staff meet rigorous CARF standards, our participants and their families rest assured they receive the highest quality care.

What do you enjoy most about your days in Adult Day Health?

“My days are something to look forward to. I hate to miss the social interaction. I like people. I have been coming here for a long time. I enjoy my old friends here and it’s also great to see new faces.”

How does ADH benefit you in your life?

“Living at home and coming to ADH I have the chance to do things for myself. If I don’t do for myself, I will lose the ability.”

LIFE helps de-mystify Medicare through the Medicare Assistance Program (MAP). As such, LIFE’s MAP stands as Oklahoma’s most comprehensive counseling service. Participants receive information and assistance relating to Medicare, Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage, long-term care and other related health coverage plans. The program serves Medicare beneficiaries, their representatives, or persons soon to be eligible for Medicare.

MAP at LIFE also provides unbiased information, education and personal assistance in comparing, selecting and enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan, as well as applying for financial assistance to help pay for prescription drug costs.

How did you feel at the end of the MAP process? Did you feel that you were counseled to make wise choices?

“The process, trying to work directly with Medicare and social security, was infuriating. While we are computer literate, we needed assistance. Melody at LIFE knew exactly what we needed and was able to direct us. We would not have been able to get it all together if not for her. It is very comforting to know there are educated people like Melody at LIFE Senior Services that will take the time to explain, walk people through the process, and assure you they will be there if you need help.”

What do you think people in the community should know about this program they may not already know?

“My experience with LIFE’s Tax Assistance Program was simply AMAZING. From the moment you walk in the door, every single person you come into contact with is friendly and personally helps you get to the next step of the process. I was completely blown away by the efficiency. It’s like a well-oiled machine, but also extremely personal. The warmth and kindness of everyone there makes you feel welcomed and valued.”

LIFE’s Independent Case Management and Elder Abuse Advocate

1,268 People supported by Independent Case Managers

Seniors at risk of pressures to their independence, or in need of other assistance, can receive help from one of LIFE’s Case Managers. LIFE’s staff can assess needs and assist in coordinating community resources and referrals to help participants remain safe and self-sustaining. Issues addressed can range from emergency financial applications, Section 8 paperwork, veterans’ issues, PACE screening, behavioral or mental health referrals, Vintage Housing and SNAP applications, and so much more.

Elder abuse can occur when a spouse, family member, or caregiver threatens or acts to physically abuse someone. Other instances transpire when someone takes advantage of financial or other resources through stealth or by force. LIFE’s professional staff advocates and guides seniors to safety from threatening situations and assists in navigating this major life adjustment. LIFE’s Independent Case Managers provide personalized care based on each individual’s needs.

“LIFE served a 78-year-old client who suffers with arthritis and back pain and gets around with the aid of a walker. Martha informed a LIFE Case Manager she had been sleeping on a small mattress on the floor, “I am in so much pain. I am having a hard time sleeping and also getting off the mattress in the morning.” She also mentioned a lack of kitchen items and a dresser. LIFE’s case manager used her contacts, like Catholic Charities, to make a few calls. Arrangements were made to deliver a bed, dresser, couch and kitchen items later that day. On hearing the good news, our client started to cry and said, “I am so happy. I will be able to sleep on a bed tonight. Thank you so much for helping me.”

Aging does not eliminate behavioral or mental health challenges, and LIFE helps ensure seniors have access to quality professional care. LIFE and its partnerships with Family and Children’s Services, and Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS) help address the specific needs of the senior population. Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) help provide needed insights and guidance.

Providing care to an aging loved one can produce novel reactions and frustrations for patient and caregiver alike. Caregivers frequently require new skills and coping mechanisms to meet the evolving landscape. Assistance from LIFE’s LPC specialists offers caregivers counseling, consultation, resources, and support. Action plans offer caregiving strategies and improve the quality of life as circumstances unfold. Support groups, with others confronting similar circumstances, provide additional resources to boost a caregiver’s capabilities. As a result, stronger caregivers emerge who can better care for themselves and provide a safe, nurturing environment for the people who rely on them.

“Thank you so much for meeting with me today. The timing of today’s visit was perfect since my mom opened the door herself this evening by inquiring about home health services. Thursday, I will start contacting the agencies that were suggested and will call the Wellness Program. I am eager to see where this takes us.

I feel like I am chasing my tail most days. I am usually one step behind or just barely ahead of what needs to happen next. Thank you so much for your program and giving folks like me direction. The information that you and your team shared with me is invaluable. This service is truly a blessing.”
