History of the Tulsa Fire Department 18 The The Tulsa Fire Department has been around almost as long as the city itself. Just a few weeks

before Tulsa was incorporated on January 8, 1898, Tulsa’s downtown business district was almost destroyed by a fire on December 5, 1897, which prompted a group of men to take action.

LIFE’s Vintage Newsmagazine is published monthly by LIFE Senior Services (a Tulsa Area United Way nonprofit) and helps fulfill LIFE Senior Services’ mission to promote and preserve independence for seniors.

Seniors are more likely to be targeted by scammers. According to the FBI’s website, that’s because seniors are more likely to have a “nest egg,” own their home and/or have excellent credit, making them extremely attractive to criminals.

Welcome home!

LIFE’s Vintage Housing, an affiliate nonprofit of LIFE Senior Services, offers comfortable, carefree and affordable housing for low-income seniors age 62 and older. With 17 properties (and more on the way), LIFE’s Vintage Housing communities are designed specifically for older adults, encouraging social and functional active aging. Each two or three story community has up to 48 apartments, plus multiple common areas for gathering and socialization.

LIFE’s first Vintage Housing community – Pioneer Village in Jenks – was built in 1996. During 2017 and 2018, the community underwent a massive renovation project, including an exterior facelift, energy-efficient window upgrades, new HVAC units and hot water tanks. The interior of the community was modernized with new flooring, paint, cabinetry and fixtures in every apartment and common area.

As each property reaches the 20 year milestone, renovations will be planned to keep the communities updated and modern. This year, an exterior rehab began on Carriage Crossing in Coweta, which opened its doors in 1997.

While rehabilitating older communities is a priority, building new communities to serve other low-income seniors is also on the top of LIFE’s Vintage Housing’s to-do list. LIFE’s Vintage Housing is currently securing funding for a new apartment complex – Whittier Heights – in the Kendall Whittier neighborhood of Tulsa. There are big plans for this new complex!

This property will have 52 apartments – the most in any property built yet.

Whittier Heights will also offer more two-bedroom units. Like LIFE’s Vintage Housing’s other communities, each apartment will have a full kitchen with full-sized appliances, a living room with an area for a dining table, a bathroom, ample storage and closet space. The complex is expected to break ground in February 2020 with an opening date of February 2021. Approximately three months prior to the grand opening, LIFE’s Vintage Housing will begin accepting applications. Contact LIFE’s Vintage Housing at (918) 664-9000 in July 2020 about the application process if you’re interested in living in this community.

In addition, LIFE’s Vintage Housing is working with Tulsa Habitat for Humanity in the Kendall Whittier neighborhood. Habitat for Humanity is building townhomes near the apartments, and six of the townhomes will be owned by LIFE’s Vintage Housing and exclusively rented to seniors.

Thanks to You The loss of a spouse can be devastating as you try to navigate a once-familiar life without your constant partner and support system. For Ivalee, losing his wife brought on profound sadness and, eventually, depression and isolation.

Seeing her father struggle, Ivalee’s daughter encouraged him to do two things: move in with her and start attending LIFE’s Adult Day Health.

There, Ivalee made friends, participated in activities and had something to look forward to each day.

While LIFE’s Adult Day Health undoubtedly offered the wellness support Ivalee needed, they provided something else … something just as important: the comfort of home.

As Ivalee’s dementia progressed, attending Adult Day became more of a daily necessity as he could no longer be safe alone. LIFE’s staff was able to provide hands-on care with medications, activities of daily living and personal care during the day so Ivalee’s daughter could work, knowing that he was well cared for and, most importantly, safe.

While it didn’t immediately make sense as to why Ivalee had such a powerful emotional connection to the dolls, Ivalee’s daughter quickly realized why they brought him comfort and peace.

Ivalee and his late wife had three children of their own and were affectionately known as the neighborhood parents, taking care of more than just their own children. And it was something that both of them enjoyed immensely and took great pride in doing.

“I see a light in my dad’s eyes and believe that the dolls connect him to some of the happiest times of his life – to his younger days spent with my mom and having people to care for. I’m grateful to LIFE’s Adult Day Health for helping my dad find a purpose and a connection.”

This Month in History December 11, 1978: December 4, 1991:

Hostage Terry Anderson freed Islamic militants in Lebanon released kidnapped American journalist Terry Anderson after 2,454 days in captivity. As chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press, Anderson covered the long-running civil war in Lebanon (1975-1990). On March 16, 1985, he was kidnapped on a west Beirut street while leaving a tennis court. His captors took him to the southern suburbs of the city, where he was held prisoner in an underground dungeon for the next six-and-a-half years.

December 7, 1941:

Pearl Harbor bombed

At 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, a Japanese dive bomber bearing the red symbol of the Rising Sun of Japan on its wings appeared out of the clouds above the island of Oahu. A swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes followed, descending on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in a ferocious assault. The surprise attack struck a critical blow against the U.S. Pacific fleet and drew the United States irrevocably into World War II.

Millions stolen from JFK Airport

Half a dozen masked robbers raided the Lufthansa Airlines cargo building at JFK Airport in New York, making off with more than $5 million in cash ($21 million in today's dollars) and almost $1 million in jewelry. The plan was dreamed up by Peter Gruenewald, a Lufthansa cargo worker at JFK Airport. To this day, the Lufthansa heist, as it is known, is considered one of the greatest in U.S. history.

December 16, 1773:

The Boston Tea Party

In Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded three British tea ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor. The midnight raid, popularly known as the “Boston Tea Party,” was in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773, a bill designed to save the faltering East India Company by greatly lowering its tea tax and granting it a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade.

December 21, 1968:

Apollo 8 departed for moon’s orbit

Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon, was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, with astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, Jr., and William Anders aboard. On Christmas Eve, the astronauts entered into orbit around the moon, the first manned spacecraft ever to do so. On Christmas morning, Apollo 8 left its lunar orbit and began its journey back to Earth, landing safely in the Pacific Ocean on December 27.

December 28, 1895:

First commercial movie screened

The world’s first commercial movie screening took place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film was made by Louis and Auguste Lumiere, two French brothers who developed a cameraprojector called the Cinematographe. The Lumiere brothers unveiled their invention to the public in March 1895 with a brief film showing workers leaving the Lumiere factory.

PREPARING FOR A CAREGIVER EMERGENCY Emergency preparedness usually means prepping for a natural disaster such as a tornado or flood. You stock pile food, have an emergency stash of medication and a to-go bag ready with clothes and maybe even a little money. Caregivers should also be acutely aware of the additional preparation needed for their care recipient.

While you likely have thought about a natural disaster or even an emergency with your care recipient (like a fall, stroke or heart attack), have you considered what your care recipient would do if something happened to you? It is estimated that

This includes a thorough medical history and an advance directive of healthcare naming someone, ideally not your care recipient, as the healthcare proxy. This person should be included in your emergency communication plan. In addition to the advance directive, consider adding a power of attorney for more indepth financial and medical needs on your behalf and a HIPAA release for those you trust with your healthcare information and to advocate on your behalf.

Financials It is helpful to have a small stash of cash, an “emergency only” credit card or other means available for emergency caregiving. The financial obligations associated with the care of your loved one should be considered when discussing the responsibility with others in the family or friend group. Sometimes families have “alternate” caregivers named in the legal documents of the person who needs help and contingency plans are prepared well in advance. If it is not possible to financially prepare, discuss the need to save receipts associated with caregiving with the care team for potential reimbursement.

I nformation about your loved one. This should include medical conditions, medication, special diets, safety concerns, schedules, etc.

Caregivers’ focus on the care and comfort of their loved one is a powerful, necessary tool in the current medical system. The contribution of family caregivers is astronomically high, and the risk for family caregivers is real. While planning for an adverse event is valuable, so is planning for daily self-care and rest. Find time to honor the work done for your family, friends and neighbors.

If the person you help has dementia, you should consider an alert system bracelet.

These alert systems register you and your loved one with a third party that can assist with the emergency plan and give pertinent information to emergency responders, medical personnel and back-up caregivers.

Benefits Update for 2020 The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have set the Medicare premiums, deductibles and coinsurance amounts to be paid by Medicare beneficiaries in 2020.

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital, skilled nursing facility and some home healthcare services.

Most Medicare beneficiaries do not have a Part A premium since they have at least 40 quarters of Medicare-covered employment (or are the spouse or widow(er) of such a person).

• Part A Monthly Premium Enrollees age 65 and older who have fewer than 40 quarters of coverage and certain persons with disabilities pay a monthly premium in order to receive coverage under Part A. Individuals who had at least 30 quarters of coverage or were married to someone with at least 30 quarters of coverage may buy into Part A at a reduced monthly premium rate, which will be $252 in 2020 – a $12 increase from 2019. Other individuals who have less than 30 quarters of coverage will pay the full premium, which will be $458 a month in 2020 – a $21 increase from 2019.

• Part A Deductible and Coinsurance The Medicare Part A inpatient hospital deductible that beneficiaries will pay when admitted to the hospital will be $1,408 in 2020 – an increase of $44 from $1,364 in 2019. The Part A deductible covers beneficiaries’ share of costs for the first 60 days of Medicare-covered inpatient hospital care in a benefit period. In 2020, beneficiaries must pay a coinsurance amount of $352 per day for the 61st through 90th day of a hospitalization in a benefit period and $704 per day for lifetime reserve days. For beneficiaries in skilled nursing facilities, the daily coinsurance for days 21 through 100 of extended care services in a benefit period will be $176 in 2020.

A benefit period starts the day a patient is admitted and ends when the patient has been out of the hospital for 60 days in a row.

Medicare Part B (Medicare Insurance) Medicare Part B covers physician services, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services, durable medical equipment and certain other medical and health services.

• Part B Monthly Premium The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B enrollees will be $144.60 for 2020 – an increase of $9.10 from $135.50 in 2019.

• Part B Income Related Adjustments Since 2007, beneficiaries with higher incomes have paid higher Part B monthly premiums.

Specifically, if a beneficiary’s modified adjusted gross income as reported on their IRS tax return from two years ago is more than $87,000 ($174,000 filing jointly), the beneficiary is responsible for a larger portion of the cost of their coverage. The premiums' adjustments range from $57.80 to $347 more per month for Medicare Part B. • Part B Deductible and Coinsurance Costs for Part B services depend on whether you have Original Medicare or are in a Medicare health plan. For some services, there is no cost, but you may have to pay for the doctor’s visit. If the Part B deductible applies, you must pay all costs until you meet the yearly Part B deductible before Medicare begins to pay its share.

In 2020, the Part B deductible will be $198 in 2020 – an increase of $13 from the annual deductible of $185 in 2019. After your deductible is met, you typically pay 20% of the Medicareapproved amount of the service.

If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO) or have other insurance (like a Medigap policy or employer or union coverage), your cost may be different.

Medicare PART D OPEN ENROLLMENT Period The annual enrollment period for Medicare beneficiaries is drawing to a close, and for most enrollees, December 7 is the deadline to make any changes for coverage in 2020.

If you are satisfied with your current coverage and your plan will still be available in 2020, you don’t need to do anything. Your current coverage will continue for the next year. If you have Original Medicare with a separate prescription drug plan, you can review your options using the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare’s website or you can contact the Medicare Assistance Program at LIFE Senior Services.

The History of the Tulsa Police Department From the 1880s to early 1900s, the presence of liquor, gambling and prostitution in Tulsa – combined with the lack of law enforcement – created a rough, rowdy, western cow town. The tribal laws in Indian Territory pertained only to Native Americans, and only the most notorious criminals were arrested by the army of federal marshals who toured the area for two to three months at a time.

The Early Years The terrorizing activities of the unruly drunken cowboys prompted the federal court to appoint Lon Lewis and Byrl Cox as Tulsa’s first deputy U.S. marshals in 1885. In 1889, a United States court was established in Muskogee and with the addition of other courts, lawlessness began to subside.

In 1893, the Dawes Commission was established and abolished the Indian Tribal Governments and Indian Courts, bringing all inhabitants of the territory under one judicial system. U.S. marshals and appointed city marshals enforced the law.

In 1901, Dr. Fred S. Clinton and Dr. J.C. Bland struck oil on the Sue Bland Number One, touching off an era of incredible expansion and growth in Tulsa. The rough and tumble cow town quickly transitioned to an oil town. By 1905, Tulsa had grown to 7,200 from 1,390 just five years prior, but the major crimes stayed the same. Liquor joints, gambling halls, bawdy houses and even narcotics prevailed.

The Tulsa Police Department grew from just five officers in 1905 to 16 officers in 1908.

By 1918, the police department boasted 50 officers with a starting salary of $106 per month. Tulsa’s population was 42,000.

The Evolving Role of Tulsa’s Women Police Officers While women in the field of law enforcement were virtually non-existent in the early 1900s, the department created the Office of Police Matron in 1909. The first matron was Mrs. Florence Schoonover. She was not a sworn or commissioned officer, but her duties included checking immoral, destitute and improper homes for children, securing homes and employment for girls and children, and caring for female prisoners.

Beulah Johnson was the first woman to become a sworn officer in the Tulsa Police Department on April 16, 1936 and spent her 23-year career in the juvenile division. Mary Horn was Tulsa’s first black female police officer. She joined the department in 1939 and worked in the raiding squad arresting those breaking liquor and gambling laws.

In 1955, five women were hired as police officers and were the first women to wear the police uniform. They directed traffic during rush hour and issued parking tickets downtown.

The turning point for female officers came in 1973 when Lynn Jones and Monte Peterson filed a sex discrimination suit against the Tulsa Police Department. They had been transferred from the juvenile division to clerical duties based on their sex and not on their investigative abilities. The Equal Employment Opportunities Commission supported the officers who were reinstated to their former positions with full seniority and back pay.

From Citizen to Officer At the turn of the century, city marshals could neither read nor write. The first required training for police officers came in 1931. They attended police school on Sunday mornings for six weeks to learn basic police functions and duties. In 1947, the first police academy class was held in the basement of the police station.

The academy used classrooms at the University of Tulsa Law School from 1951 until the police academy building was constructed in 1966.

Twenty-two years later, the current police academy completed construction with classrooms, a new pistol range and bomb disposal facility, as well as a gym, weight room, swimming pool and more. Today, the department strives to hold three classes of 30 cadets each year. A class of 29 stands to graduate in December.

Civil rights legislation in 1964 began to solve some of the inadequacies for black police officers.

Officer Archie Carroll broke the barrier for black officers when he was assigned to a car accident investigation south of 11th Street in 1966.

The last 50-plus years have seen some improvements for black officers, but there is still a definite lag with respect to the proportion of black officers to the total police force. As recently as August 2019, the department received flak over its lack of minority representation after the Tulsa Police Academy failed to graduate a single black member.

Identifying and securing minority candidates is challenging for the department because of significant competition from law enforcement agencies across Oklahoma and elsewhere. AfricanAmerican women applicants are even harder to recruit locally because of high interest from the federal and state level. But the department remains optimistic that diversity numbers will improve.

The History of the Tulsa Fire Department The Tulsa Fire Department has been around almost as long as the city itself. Just a few weeks before Tulsa was incorporated on January 8, 1898, Tulsa’s downtown business district was almost destroyed by a fire on December 5, 1897. The fire broke out at the rear of Price and Gillette's Hardware and went undiscovered until the store was a complete mass of flames.

eople rushed to the scene with buckets and blankets in an attempt to put out the blaze, but the fire spread to the bank building to the north and Egan's Store to the south. Minutes later a row of wood frame buildings to the south of Egan’s were also engulfed in flames. The whole east side of Main Street lay in ashes.

The fire prompted a group of young men to gather at Bynum's General Store to discuss the dangers from fires and how to prevent similar occurrences. Over the next few years, enthusiastic citizens attempted – often unsuccessfully – to fight fires using a hose hooked up to a large water well located at 1st and Main.

The group met again at Bynum’s store on June 6, 1900 to organize a volunteer fire department.

At this meeting, R.C. Alder was elected fire chief.

Alder had come to Tulsa from Missouri in 1899 to open a saddle shop. He had been a member of a volunteer fire department in Missouri for nine years and firefighting was in his blood. The "Grand Old Man,” as he would come to be called, served as fire chief until retiring in 1922.

Department Established The year 1905 proved to be a critical year as Tulsa's volunteer fire department migrated to the full-time professional department that we know today. That year, a waterworks system was installed that included "fire plugs,” along with fire alarm boxes on downtown streets. In early 1905, the city council approved a paid fire department comprised of four men with a team of horses and a wagon, which Chief Alder attained from Kansas City.

their first appropriations. The first pension was paid out of the fund in 1929. In 1971, a Collective Bargaining and Arbitration Law for Firefighters of Oklahoma was enacted. Tulsa was the first city in Oklahoma to sign a contract due to this new law.

RACE MASsACRE In May 1921, mobs of white Tulsans attacked black Tulsans and businesses in the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. In the early morning hours of June 1, white rioters threw lighted oil rags into several buildings along Archer Street at the southern edge of the Greenwood district. Numerous eyewitness

The Fireman's Relief and Pension Law was first established in 1909 by legislative enactment. The fund did not, however, become operative until 1911. In 1913, the cities participating received

accounts, such as testimony from the survivors during Commission hearings and a manuscript by eyewitness and attorney Buck Colbert Franklin discovered in 2015, said that on the morning of June 1, at least "a dozen or more" planes circled the neighborhood and dropped "burning turpentine balls" on multiple buildings.

According to “Riot and Remembrance: The Tulsa Race War and its Legacy,” by James S. Hirsch, as crews from the Tulsa Fire Department arrived to put out fires, they were turned away at gunpoint. The 2001 “Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921” report states that the firemen “were fired upon by the white mob.” By 4 a.m., an estimated two dozen blackowned businesses had been set ablaze.

Training Advancements Tulsa’s earliest firefighters were trained on the job and at the fire stations. In 1919, recognizing the need for a place to train, the fire department built a steel drill tower in what is now Owen Park.

In 1930, the tower was moved to fire station #2

and was the focal point of training until the mid 1950s when a new center opened on Newblock Park Drive.

In 1934, the Department moved into the brand new, fireproof, isolated Fire Alarm Building, located at 8th and Madison. Not only is the Tulsa Fire Alarm Building one of the city’s great Art Deco buildings, it incorporated the best alarm system available at the time. From its original inhabitation in 1934 to its vacancy in 1984, the building acted as the alarm reporting center for the city of Tulsa. In 1981, the Fire Alarm Building moved to the newer Police & Municipal Courts Building at the Civic Center. It was repurposed in the mid-1990s as the home of the The American Lung Association. Efforts are currently underway to turn the building into the Tulsa Fire Museum.

In July 2015, the fire department opened its current state-of-the-art Tulsa Fire Safety Training Center. The facility was the first of its kind in the state of Oklahoma and was built for live-fire and hands-on training with a focus on safety and environmental friendliness.

Manpower AND Holidays In the early days of the department, Tulsa’s firefighters were given one day off every eight days.

In 1907, there were eight men besides Chief Alder when a holiday shift was introduced that gave one of them a day off each day. In 1919, the department boasted a personnel force of 84 men who worked an 84-hour week. In 1935, the department had grown to 151 men working a 72 hour week. Women joined the department in 1991 as Debra Kuffel, 26, and Norita Brown, 22, became the first two women to graduate from the Tulsa Fire Academy.

Today, the Tulsa Fire Department boasts 676 men and women working 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off. In 1907, the department responded to 39 fire alarms. Today, Tulsa’s firefighters respond to more than 57,000 incidents annually.

The response area has grown to 201 square miles and approximately 400,000 citizens from 1,390 in 1900. And from that first fire station in Antle’s Livery, Tulsa now has 30 fire stations and five designated districts.

For far too many older adults in our country, the golden years are tarnished by ongoing elder abuse and/or neglect. Unfortunately, older adults can make easy targets because they often have health conditions or physical limitations, are socially isolated or can have mental/cognitive impairment affecting their perceptions of reality.

Because of the high number of unreported situations, the incidence of elder abuse and neglect is estimated at 2 million older adults in the United States. Abuse can occur in the home or in a long-term care setting. In 60% of the cases where the perpetrator is known, it is a family member, usually the older adult’s spouse or adult child.

Why isn’t elder abuse reported more often?

The situation is complicated if the abuser is a family member since there are often strong emotions and feelings of love, frustration, denial and guilt from everyone involved. If the abuse is coming from a spouse, it can be a continuation of a lifetime of domestic violence.

Other times, the victim may have dementia and not be fully cognizant of what is happening.

Symptoms of Abuse It can be hard to recognize elder abuse because some people can be private and unwilling to share personal information. There are symptoms you can look for:

Bruises, pressure marks, abrasions, broken bones and burns can indicate physical abuse. Interactions between caregiver and recipient may seem strained, tentative or the older adult may appear frightened of the caregiver.

Bedsores, poor hygiene, unsanitary living conditions, unattended medical needs or withdrawal and lack of contact with friends or family can be signs of neglect or emotional abuse. ailure to take medications, unexplained weight loss or even F incidents of forgetfulness, such as leaving the stove on and unattended, can be signs of self-neglect. It can be difficult to distinguish between emotional abuse or neglect and selfneglect. arge cash withdrawals, sudden changes in will or L disappearance of jewelry or valuable items from the home can indicate financial exploitation. exual abuse is less common, but signs include bruises or S blood on undergarments.

Forms of Abuse

Abuse and neglect doesn’t always mean physical harm.

There are varying types of abuse and neglect and each of them is detrimental to the health and well-being of the older adult.

Physical – inflicting physical pain or injury by hitting, slapping or pushing.

Sexual – touching, fondling or any sexual contact done without the older adult’s consent or understanding. Sexual abuse is about power.

Emotional – includes verbal assaults and insults, as well as intimidation or isolation.

Confinement – restraining or isolating the older adult without medical cause.

Passive neglect – ignoring requests for assistance or failing to provide for life’s basic needs in a timely manner.

Willful deprivation – deliberately withholding medications, food, personal assistance and/or exposing the older adult to personal risks.

Financial exploitation – misuse or withholding of funds.

Unfortunately, older adults are often the targets of scammers or people who seek to befriend them for exploitative purposes.

Abandonment – leaving a senior alone without making arrangements to address their needs.

Uncovering Elder Abuse or Neglect

Find out who is providing care and make sure any facilities or caregivers are properly certified and subject to background checks when appropriate. People concerned about an older adult need to stay in touch and be alert to changes in demeanor or physical condition.

Often a direct question like “Are you being abused?” will lead to a denial, but other approaches may encourage the older adult to share what’s going on. Consider asking questions like: • How do you feel around this person?

• Who scares you?

• How are you treated?

• What medications are you taking and when?

• How long do you have to wait for help after asking for it (i.e. requesting a snack or water, medications or assistance with dressing)?

Preventing Elder Abuse and Neglect It’s important for all parties involved to recognize when a caregiving situation has gone as far as it safely can. In most cases, there comes a point when more care is needed than a single person can provide and the family has to look at placement in some type of long-term care community. This is no time for friends and family to disengage.

Instead, remain involved and observant to keep the older adult involved and engaged. Advocate on the older person’s behalf if needs aren’t being met.

An older adult who remains engaged with friends and family and receives regular visits is less likely to be subject to elder abuse and neglect. Even if someone else is writing checks for the older adult, the risks of financial exploitation go down if they stay engaged in their financial situation. A medical alert system can be a lifesaver for any older adults left alone for periods of time. Older adults wanting to protect a nest egg or estate can set up a revocable trust with a corporate trustee. These protect financial assets since they are highly regulated to minimize possible abuse. Share information about current scams with your older adult friends and loved ones so they can be alert and cautious.

Resources

All it takes is a suspicion that abuse may be taking place to call Adult Protective Services. However, when dealing with an older adult who has some form of dementia – or when the possible abuser is a family member – individuals may seek options where police aren’t automatically involved. Some of these area agencies and programs can provide guidance and suggestions and will not involve the police without the victim’s consent.

Law Enforcement Works to Protect Seniors Crime cuts across all demographics, but seniors can be particularly vulnerable to certain types of crimes or misconduct. Changes in lifestyle and the mental and physical challenges often associated with aging can make this group an easy target for abuse, ranging from financial to physical.

A

s the use of technology increases, cell phones, email and the internet continue to create new and more sophisticated ways for unscrupulous people to defraud their victims. In Tulsa, law enforcement recognizes the importance of protecting our senior community. Through specialized programs, training and personnel, the Tulsa County Sheriff ’s Office (TCSO) and the Tulsa Police Department (TPD) work to help address the needs of our older population.

The TSCO is an active participant in community policing. While neighborhood watch and crime prevention programs fall under this category and help the public in general, the TSCO is also involved in TRIAD, a collaborative effort between the TSCO, the TPD and the senior community with a goal to work together to reduce and prevent crimes against seniors and disabled adults. TRIAD includes an educational component where officers visit senior groups to talk about elder abuse and scams, offer seniors advice on how to protect themselves from becoming a victim of fraud and other crimes.

Within the TPD, the Senior Services Unit, established in 2006, focuses on catching criminals who prey on seniors. The unit investigates crimes against older people and disabled adults who are

often targeted with home-repair fraud, identity theft and caretaker abuse.

Steve Whittington is a retired police officer who worked in the unit from its inception until his retirement in 2016. Whittington has remained on the job in a volunteer capacity since that time.

“They wanted detectives working specifically on senior cases,” he says of the special unit. “We work on elder abuse, financial abuse and physical abuse, and we work closely with Adult Protective Services (APS). They refer cases to us, and we process them, take a look at them.”

The Senior Services Unit also works closely with Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS) and the Department of Human Services (DHS).

“There is a lot of overlap,” explains Sergeant Debbie Hodges, who works with Whittington.

“We couldn't do it by ourselves. Nobody could.

It overlaps so much. Some issues are crimes, some are more of a social services thing, so we just feed each other back and forth.”

According to Hodges, the investigative process often begins when the unit receives a report from APS. “I enter a police report because it might be elder abuse, someone – a caregiver or family member – taking their money when they shouldn’t, then we do what we call a ‘check on well-being,’” Hodges says. “We go out in a two-man unit wearing Tulsa Police vests and just knock on the door to basically see what is going on. Just a visit.

We check on well-being to see if somebody’s not eating or to see if somebody’s being abused, financially or otherwise.”

Although Whittington didn't have specific statistics on how many of these well-being checks the unit does every year in connection with reports they receive from APS, it is a significant part of their work.

“We’ll talk to the individual, and we’ll talk to the caregiver,” Hodges says. “We’ll spend the time to find out what is going on. We’ll sit down and hang out and talk to people to find out what the problem is and figure out how to solve the issue.”

Often the officers discover no crime is being committed, but there is still a need for some kind of support. In these cases, they contact APS or the appropriate social service program to get the individual into the system and find a solution to the problem.

Whittington and Hodges find their work in the Senior Crimes Unit very rewarding.

“I had two grandmothers, and I was very close to them,” Hodges recalls. “Officers like us who have elderly people in our lives, it just ticks us off a little more than your average officer. Every time I see one of these people, I think of my grandmother.”

Whittington agrees. “A lot of elderly people are more vulnerable than just the average citizen. It’s rewarding to help them out and get some measure of justice for them,” he says. “They can’t defend themselves or fight back like the average citizen.”

to watch for language like “scientifically proven” or “may help,” any reference to animal testing or products claiming to help with other conditions in addition to Alzheimer’s. These products simply carry no guarantee and are a waste of your money.

Grandparent Scams

Seniors are more likely to be targeted by scammers. According to the FBI’s website, that’s because seniors are more likely to have a “nest egg,” own their home and/or have excellent credit, making them extremely attractive to criminals.

And generally speaking, people who grew up in the 30s, 40s and 50s were raised to be polite and trusting, giving these con artists a foot in the door – figuratively and literally sometimes. Some seniors are also suffering from cognitive decline, which affects their ability to detect deceit.

This is why seniors need to be vigilant against frauds and scams and stay up-to-date on the latest tricks and tactics. The following is not an exhaustive list of senior scams, so continue to do your homework. Above all, remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is and to always verify any claims with authorities or family members before acting.

Scammers target the worry of developing Alzheimer’s with the same elixir-type strategies street hawkers used to pass off their “miracle cures.” The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers to beware of illegally sold products claiming to prevent, treat or cure Alzheimer's disease. These products, which are often sold on websites and social media platforms, have not been reviewed by the FDA and are not proven safe and effective to treat the diseases and health conditions they claim to treat.

This scam has been around for a while and for good reason – it works quite often. The caller will impersonate your grandchild with an urgent plea for help, like “I’m stuck in jail, in the hospital or out of the state/country.” What convinces you this is your grandchild’s voice? These scammers are pros. They rapid fire emergency situations and instructions to make you panic and rush. This scam usually ends with a plea to keep it secret from mom and dad and directions to call and pay “the authority,” like a doctor, police officer or court personnel.

If you get a call like this, slow down. Ask questions only a family member would know and verify information with other family members.

Call your grandchild, too. This one quick step could resolve the whole issue. These scammers prey on emotion and a sense of urgency. Give yourself time to think.

Medicare Scams

Medicare scams present one of the most insidious attacks of all. Since they don’t necessarily hit the pocket book, these scammers can fly under the radar. Yet the fallout from their actions is far reaching.

Ask questions.

Legitimate businesses and organizations will answer them.

Don’t provide personal information.

Sometimes, they tell you they need“to confirm.”

Don’t pay shipping charges requested over the phone.

Channing Rutherford, Medicare Assistance Program supervisor for LIFE Senior Services, has seen a number of Medicare scams. She describes one of the most recent ones: DNA screening offers. Via phone, email or in person, companies tout a 100% covered DNA screening test through your preventive care Medicare benefit.

While it sounds nice, it’s really a $2.1 billion Medicare fraud scam.

According to an AARP article on the subject, “The fraud occurs when Medicare is billed for a test or screening that is not medically necessary or not ordered by a beneficiary's treating physician.” The approving physician receives kickbacks for the tests they ordered. Oftentimes, beneficiaries never receive the results of the test and sometimes they’re charged for them even though they were told they would be free.

Rutherford describes another scam she sees frequently – one that can have a more direct effect on you – durable medical equipment scams.

Recent years have seen a rash of back brace scams, for example. The caller informs you that it’s available at no charge to you, collects your Medicare information, orders a back brace through a doctor’s approval, which then arrives on your doorstep. You might just stick it in the closet and think nothing of it. Down the line, though, this could creep out of the closet to haunt you. “If you are only allotted one every five years, for example, you can be denied when you actually need it because there’s already one paid for and issued to you,” Rutherford warns.

The approaches get more creative all the time, but scammers still haven’t laid off the old faithful tactics. Phone and email campaigns target seniors as well. It’s important to never give out your Medicare number – either on the phone or via email.

Rutherford also wants everyone to know how important it is to report Medicare frauds or scams – whether you were actually scammed or not. “Seniors can call us if they suspect any Medicare fraud, waste or abuse or they can call Oklahoma’s Senior Medicare Patrol Hotline at (800) 763-2828.”

These tricksters know their tactics, and they aren’t afraid to use them.

Guard your privacy, your money and your well-being. Rutherford, describing one DNA screening scammer, perhaps puts it best, and gives one more reason to slow down, think and then act.

“For every argument, he had a counter – and he was very convincing!

That’s what scammers do. It’s not just scare tactics, but making you second guess what you know.”

Legal Assistance for Seniors The thought of reaching out for legal help can be daunting. Who do you call and – bigger yet – how much will it cost? Hefty legal fees can prevent some people from seeking the counsel of an attorney, even when it’s desperately needed.

However, an organization called Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma, Inc. provides free legal services to senior adults living in the state of Oklahoma.

Legal Aid’s mission is to be a partner in the community making equal justice for all a reality.

R

ichard J. Vreeland, deputy director and attorney for Legal Aid, says the nonprofit organization provides free legal and civil services – ranging from giving advice on documents to full representation in cases. “Our services are free. Anyone can receive advice,” Vreeland says.

A substantial number of Legal Aid’s cases include assisting and representing senior adults in Oklahoma. A common form of legal assistance for seniors is helping them set up or complete end-oflife documents, such as a will or durable power of attorney.

The Legal Aid website offers a wealth of information for seniors, including documents for developing wills and probates, Medicare information and more. It’s helpful when seniors take the time to peruse the website and do their homework before calling Legal Aid for assistance, Vreeland says. Any work a senior does ahead of time will help expedite the process for the client as well.

However, there comes a time when you need a professional attorney.

Many laws are complex, and various interpretations and frequent law changes can cause the average person a great deal of confusion. According to the Oklahoma Bar Association, lawyers are trained to explain and interpret the law for you, to provide legal assistance and to be aware of all court procedures, filing requirements, deadlines and other details which a nonlawyer could easily overlook.

Legal Aid offers free legal advice to any senior age 60+, regardless of income or net worth. However, for cases that involve actual representation, Legal Aid is limited to seniors with lower incomes.

“We have limited resources. We’re really looking at those who have the least means,” Vreeland says. “Our priorities are health, safety and housing.”

Legal Aid commonly offers assistance to seniors with benefits issues. They often help seniors obtain Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, as well as help with Medicaid issues.

Vreeland says seniors regularly need help when it comes to understanding Oklahoma's ADvantage program and how Medicaid covers nursing home costs.

Help in Action In one case, Legal Aid helped a client with hospital debts prevent garnishment of his Social Security retirement and his wife’s Oklahoma teacher’s retirement.

Legal Aid attorney David Edge advised the client that federal regulations require financial institutions to calculate the amount in his account. Additionally, if the account contains less than twice the amount of his federal benefit, it is protected from garnishment – even if it contains other funds, such as his wife’s teacher’s retirement.

The client was confused because a credit union officer told him that his wife’s retirement could possibly be garnished if it was in the same account as his Social Security funds. Edge emailed the client specific federal regulation disallowing garnishment of other funds in the account and instructed him to provide it to the credit union officer.

“I explained that in the event that his wife’s retirement was released by the bank, she could file the claim for exemption in court and have it refunded,” Edge says.

As a result of this assistance from Legal Aid, there has been no further recording of a garnishment in the court records from this client or his wife, Edge says.

Additionally, seniors can seek Legal Aid’s assistance on housing issues.

For example, sometimes Legal Aid steps in when seniors on fixed incomes are in sub-standard rental properties where the landlord is refusing to make needed changes.

“You can request repairs from the landlord, but a lot of times the landlord ends up terminating the lease. It affects their health and safety if conditions aren’t inhabitable.”

In these types of scenarios, Legal Aid is able to represent low-income seniors to ensure they secure safe and reliable housing.

Legal Aid also helps seniors who need assistance with guardianship defense. “Unfortunately, some caregivers try to utilize that [guardianship defense] to gain control over the senior’s property and assets,” Vreeland says.

Lawyers with Legal Aid also see a fair share of scam cases, and they try to provide education to guard seniors against such scams. “We go to a lot of senior centers across the state to warn people about scams.”

One of the most common senior scam cases Legal Aid has witnessed lately is the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) scam, when someone calls pretending to be the IRS and requests personal information. “The IRS would never call you,” Vreeland says. “We saw a lot of people, including seniors, responding to that.”

Legal Aid also hears about plenty of scam attempts after disasters like last spring's tornadoes and flooding in Oklahoma.

“Anytime there’s a disaster, we see scammers going door to door, offering repair services,” Vreeland says. “They present themselves as very trustworthy.

People will pay up front, and then they never see them again.”

Legal Aid recommends that seniors do their research on a company or individual before entering any kind of contract or making a payment. “You can contact us whenever you have questions about a contract.”

OK-SPLASH Legal Aid and local Area Agencies on Aging have partnered to create the Oklahoma Sixty Plus Legal Aid Services Helpline (OKSPLASH). Legal Aid encourages seniors with legal questions to call the helpline at (855) 488-6814. The helpline is answered Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ove may be sweeter the second (or third) time around, but there are things to consider before tying the knot as an older couple. Are there children from prior relationships? How should two homes and two groups of assets be handled? Health and income issues may impact the relationship too.

As with all things concerning any two people, these and other factors determine how you live your lives. To help keep the love alive and smooth the transition to coupledom, it is best to put all the cards on the table now rather than after your vows.

Prenuptial Agreement

Money

Will marriage cause the loss of retirement, Social Security or health benefits for either party? Who pays for what? Most conflicts between couples relate to finances. So after housing is decided, income and payment activities ought to be included in a pre-nup. Some couples choose to keep their finances separate, with specific allocations for household expenses.

Others pool the available funds and spend them as needed. Everyone looks at spending differently, so if one is a penny-pincher and the other a spendthrift, now is the time to figure that out.

Though most often thought of as only for the rich, having a written agreement between parties is always a good idea.

These conversations should occur soon after the relationship has gelled and include an estate planning professional to help the individuals stay focused on what’s best for the couple.

Income may be impacted by marrying. Social Security and Veterans Administrations benefits have specific rules for disbursement. Pensions or other retirement monies, alimony or other legal financial payouts may also impact available funds.

Material Possessions

Whether grown or minors, children and grandchildren should be considered. Once the decision is made to become an official couple, family dynamics change. Regardless of the relationship each partner has with their own family, presenting the new member will have an impact.

How will the assets you’ve acquired over the years be combined or separated now and after one or both parties in the relationship pass? What do you do with two homes and all they contain?

For financial reasons, one or both homes could be sold or used for income with the couple living elsewhere. The couple may also choose to keep both residences. Consider where your lifetime of possessions inside the house are going to go too.

Again, having something in writing may ease any concerns about what happens to property, inheritances or surviving partner living situations.

Estate planning, including wills and powers of attorney documents, will be beneficial as each state has its own rules for handling these situations. One expert suggests that a Qualified Terminable Interest Property Trust (QTIP) may be a method to alleviate some issues when one partner passes, especially in the case of potential family conflict.

Cohabitation Agreement

While marriage offers benefits, such as tax breaks and legal protections, many older couples choose not to tie the knot. However, living together without marriage can could create some issues, therefore a written agreement is a good option.

This agreement would spell out the way the couple shares assets and costs incurred in the relationship. For instance, if one partner is not on a deed, lease or other legal or financial document, what are their rights and obligations should the other partner die or become incapacitated? Will the remaining party be allowed to receive income? How will heirship be handled?

If the arrangement fails, what claims could be made? While cohabitation agreements are unconventional, it is an option that older couples should seriously consider.

Another option to consider is living apart together (LAT) – both parties are committed to each other, but live separately. This type of relationship is becoming more popular with older adults.

In a 2016 study on LAT relationships, 25 adults between 60 to 88 years old found several motivations for this choice. Top of the list was the desire for intimate companionship while maintaining their own familiar home, social circles, customary activities and finances. Some who had been divorced or had unhappy prior marriages believed distance was preferable to day-today togetherness.

A possible downside of a LAT relationship is the divisions of responsibilities to the other partner, especially when it comes to healthcare and caregiving. It’s best to discuss how healthcare decisions will be made and who will be making them long before the situation occurs, especially since this type of relationship doesn’t have socially prescribed norms that would dictate this behavior.

The holidays are a time for joy. By thinking ahead, you can have a distraction-free and safe holiday season.

rowing up, my holiday tradition started on Thanksgiving night when my entire family would load up in the station wagon and head to Utica Square to watch the twinkling lights go on at dusk.

We’d drink cider, visit the Santa house and walk around in a sea of shoppers and families. That event was the start of the holidays in our minds, and we would soon turn on our own lights and put up decorations at home. The entire neighborhood did the same, and we would leave our doors open in the evening for visitors who dropped by with warm tidings and season’s greetings. The tree would stay watered, the porch light was always on and usually there was someone home. If not, the neighbors would watch out for one another. Internet shopping wasn’t a thing, so there were rarely package deliveries.

Times have changed. Family dynamics have changed. Products aren’t made as well as they were even 20 years ago. The world has sped up and now, for the most

part, we must be more alert at every turn, especially during the holidays.

Decorating and Entertaining Safety Holiday decorations have vastly improved over the years – from LED lights to those large, moving inflatables and light projectors.

However, all holiday decorations come with a list of safety dos and don’ts that will never change, regardless of how much technology does.

Home and Personal Safety The internet makes shopping online and having your purchases delivered right to your doorstep quite easy. A term we have been forced to learn, either through media or first-hand, is “porch pirate.” A porch pirate is a person who steals delivered packages from porches. This happens all year around, but especially during the holiday season. It’s becoming more of a threat with each passing day, but there are ways to protect yourself from porch pirates and other potential dangers.

To avoid having your packages stolen, have your online purchases delivered to an alternative location – Amazon lockers, FedEx offices, a work address or to a friend or family member you know will be home and have quick access to receive the package.

Consider using a security system or service and/or purchasing outdoor security cameras, even one that is attached to the doorbell. If a thief sees that you are taking precautions, it could thwart their plans. In addition, a doorbell camera records instances where you can easily share the videos with neighbors and online neighborhood groups like NextDoor.com. Your home security options don’t have to be fancy or expensive to get the job done. If you have an AARP membership, check to see if it offers home security discounts.

While leaving your car in the driveway can help let criminals know you’re home, it also leaves your car open to thieves. Keep your doors locked and never leave any valuables in your vehicle.

Unless you are absolutely physically capable, never use a ladder. If you do, make sure it’s the proper ladder for the job. Ladders also have safety certification marks.

Throughout the year (not just during the holidays) check the batteries in your smoke alarms. Same goes for your carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. Every floor of your home should be equipped with both, and they should be placed close to sleeping areas.

To help prevent CO hazards, have a certified heating contractor perform yearly maintenance on your furnace and venting systems. Cleaning and replacing filters are very important during the heating season.

Easy Holiday Crafts

The holidays are filled with food, fun and lots of family get-togethers. Plan to pull the grandkids away from their digital devices – at least for a little while – with these simple holiday crafts.

Classic Painted Dough Ornaments

From Learning and Exploring Through Play Supplies • 1 cup salt • 2 cups plain flour • ¾ cup boiling water • Paint brushes • Straw • String • Acrylic paint • Seal

Instructions • Add salt and flour to a bowl, gradually adding hot water.

• Mix together until dough forms (make sure it isn’t sticky).

• Roll out dough and cut out shapes.

Use the straw to punch a hole at the top if you plan to use the piece as an ornament.

• Air dry overnight before putting your dough ornament in the oven.

• Bake for 3 hours at 120 degrees in the oven.

• Allow to air dry another day if possible.

• Decorate with paints and seal with varnish. String it up to use as an ornament.

No-Sew Sock Snowman From Easy Peasy and Fun

Supplies • Three small jars with lids • 2 bottles of clear Elmer’s glue • 1 bottle of white Elmer’s glue • One bottle of white, silver and blue glitter • Small foil snowflakes • Bowl • Spatula • Liquid starch

Supplies • 1 white sock • 1 color sock for the hat • Rice • Rubber bands • Colorful buttons • Ribbons • Glue gun • Markers or paint • Orange pom poms

Instructions • Pour all the glue into a bowl.

Instructions • Fill the white sock with rice. You will need a hefty amount.

• Add glitter and stir.

• To start, add ¼ cup of liquid starch.

• Knead and add a little more starch if it’s too slimy.

• Add the snowflakes and knead.

• Place slime in the jars and decorate if desired.

• Once you’re happy with the amount and size of your sock snowman, tie the top with the rubber band.

• Take another rubber band and place in the middle (more to the top) to make the snowman's head.

• Glue the buttons on the bottom portion using a glue gun.

• Draw the eyes and mouth with a black marker or paint. Add pink cheeks if you want.

• Stack two tiny pom poms to form the carrot nose.

• Use a ribbon to make a scarf.

• Cut the color sock (cut out the foot part without the heel). Roll it a bit and place it on the head of your snowman.

Slow Cooker Pork Chops and Gravy

Hearty Holiday Meal for Two This meal would be delicious anytime of the year, but it is especially comforting on a chilly December night. While pork chops and gravy is a humble main dish, they really can’t be beat! They are tender, flavorful and the gravy is so yummy over mashed potatoes. Consider making some crusty bread (or buying some at the store) to go along with the meal.

Ingredients • 2-3 boneless pork chops • 1 10.5 oz. can of cream of chicken soup • 1 soup can full of milk • ½ package dry onion soup mix (Lipton brand or similar) • ½ onion, diced • Olive oil

Directions • Brown pork chops in a small amount of olive oil in a skillet on the stove.

Remove chops once browned.

• Sauté onion in the same skillet. Once tender and translucent, remove.

• Add browned pork chops and onions to a sprayed or lined slow cooker.

• Combine soup, milk and soup mix together and pour over the pork chops.

• Cook for 8 hours on low.

Slow Cooker Liners

These are basically plastic bags you put into your slow cooker before adding the food. The biggest benefit is there is no clean up after. You simply pull up the liner and toss it. These are great for people who struggle with cleaning a heavy slow cooker due to limited mobility or strength.

Creamy Mashed Potatoes Ingredients • 1 ½ lbs. Yukon Gold potatoes • ½ cup whole milk or heavy cream, plus more as needed • 1 tbsp. unsalted butter, plus more as needed • 1 ounce cream cheese or sour cream, at room temperature (optional) • Salt and pepper

Directions • Fill medium saucepan with water and season generously with salt. Bring to a boil over high heat.

• Peel and chop the potatoes. Add the potatoes to the boiling water and simmer until they are falling-apart tender, 15 to 20 minutes.

• While the potatoes boil, warm the milk or cream in the microwave. Let any cream cheese or sour cream come to room temperature.

• When the potatoes are soft, drain and return to the pan over medium heat. Add the butter and cook for a few minutes over medium heat, stirring the potatoes rapidly and vigorously to help any residual water evaporate. You also want to break the potatoes up and smash them with the spoon or fork.

Roasted Vegetables This will be more than two servings, but the leftovers can be stored and reheated easily the next day or thrown into a soup or stew later in the week.

Ingredients • 1 head of broccoli, chopped into florets • 1 large zucchini, chopped into half moons • 1 large yellow squash, chopped into half moons • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in halves • 3 carrots, chopped • 10 oz. Portobello mushrooms, sliced • ¼ cup olive oil • 2-3 tsp. salt • 2 tsp. black pepper

Directions • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

• In a large bowl, toss vegetables together with olive oil, salt and pepper.

• Divide the veggies among two jelly roll pans.

• Roast for 35-40 minutes, removing the vegetables from the oven every 15 minutes to stir.

• When the potatoes are smashed up and smooth, add the warm milk or cream, as well as any other dairy you'd like.

Pour the milk in slowly, stirring constantly. Keep stirring and cooking until the potatoes are quite hot, creamy and smooth.

Turn off the heat, season to taste with pepper and salt.

Lemon Bites

Makes 3-4 dozen. Freeze one or two dozen to eat later.

Ingredients • 1 package lemon-flavored cake mix • 1 egg • 4 oz. frozen non-dairy whipped topping, thawed • ½ cup sifted powdered sugar

Directions • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

• In a large bowl, combine cake mix, egg and topping.

• Drop teaspoon of dough into powdered sugar and roll into 1-inch balls.

• Place balls of dough 2 inches apart on greased baking sheet.

• Bake 10-12 minutes until light brown on the bottom.

Cascia Christmas Walk Adds Trees

SPOTLIGHT SERIES AT THE BROKEN ARROW PAC

For more than a decade, the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center (PAC) has been offering Oklahoma favorites and Broadway hits to area audiences. The 2019-2020 season offers something for everyone on your holiday shopping list.

In the bonus show, Broken Arrow native Kristin Chenoweth comes back to her hometown for an evening of Christmas carols and classics. Chenoweth is not only a cherished home-grown star, but her work has been recognized with the presentation of an Emmy and a Tony Award. She will be joined onstage by fellow Oklahoman and multi-Grammy and Dove Award winner Sandi Patty. The holiday concert takes place December 20.

“The Color Purple” takes the Broken Arrow stage on January 21, 2020. The stage musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Price-winning bestseller features a score with elements of jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues.

The a capella group Voctave will perform on February 1, 2020. The 11-member group originated in central Florida and many of its members have their roots in Disney theme park performances. But, the group’s highly diverse concerts feature music ranging from gospel to musical theater, contemporary Christian to pop.

The season is rounded out by three highly anticipated shows: • Oklahoma native and Tony Award winner Kelli O’Hara makes her Broken Arrow PAC debut on February 15, 2020.

• The Choir of Man brings its 90-minute musical performance that is part concert and part pub scene to Broken Arrow on March 11, 2020.

• “Finding Neverland,” the magical Broadway sensation, closes out the season on March 20, 2020.

The Spotlight Series is presented by ARTSOK – The Regional Arts Alliance of Broken Arrow – and AVB Bank.

All shows take place in the Broken Arrow PAC at 701 S. Main St. in Broken Arrow. Tickets range from $20 to $40 each depending on seat choice. Blue Man Group Joins Celebrity Attractions Upcoming Season

Celebrity Attractions recently announced the addition of the Blue Man Group’s “Speechless” tour to the 2019-2020 Broadway season. The threeperformance engagement will take place January 20 through 22, 2020. Performances will be at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, 101 E. 3rd St., Tulsa.

“Speechless” features new and original compositions, invented instruments and unexpected situations in iconic Blue Man Group style based on joy, art, music, comedy, social commentary and profound absurdity. The trio – composed of three bald, mute and decidedly blue men – has been delighting audiences for 27+ years.
