50 YEAR CELEBRATIONS Please read the article on page 19 regarding the arrangements needed for this important event in the club. Maureen Bull has already put in a mammoth amount of work to produce a written history. We now need to compliment this by celebrating the book and the achievement of the club making this milestone.

WELL DONE E MAILERS The committee are pleased to note that we are getting a very positive response to the request to change the method of delivery of your copies of Zenith from printed to e mail So far, since the call went out you have greatly reduced the number of printed copies. This will continue as we move forward. Initially this has not reduced the cost of printing significantly but, as the e mail take-up increases then it will make a difference. Good on you.

Coastal Run” Thank you to the people who have been in touch since yesterday’s run to thank us for organising it. It wasn’t difficult, just a basic route with somewhere as a base for our picnic lunch. It was that lunch stop that made it such a good day, with Jill & Bill Maunsell offering us the use of their home and then being such wonderful hosts. They are more deserving of your thanks than us. To everyone who came on the run, thanks too. We were overwhelmed by the numbers and support we had. Gaye & Francis.

Coastal Run – Sunday 14th January 2018 It was pleasing to see a huge turnout for this year’s Coastal Run. Organised by Francis and Gay Pointon, we met at Masterton Town Square on a very hot Sunday morning. There was a great selection of vehicles. Some convertibles making the most of the opportunity to drive with their hoods down. We were also joined by 4 vehicles from the Horowhenua VCC (they must have had an early start!) and a couple from Wellington VCC not to mention our old stalwart, Doug Curtis, from “over the hill”. After a briefing we set off out along Te Ore Ore Road heading east following directions to Castlepoint/Riversdale. We turned off in the direction of Riversdale and then took Langdale Road at the Whareama Church turning us back towards Castlepoint. An easy drive and the countryside looked wonderful. At the Whakitaki Pub we dutifully stopped for refreshments and a toilet break. We were informed that our destination only had tank water so best use the facilities at the Pub! It was certainly a needed break and the publican did a brisk trade of liquid refreshments. We set off again and took the Mataikona Road a short distance from the pub. This road is tarred but very narrow and winding for the first few kilometres. It is quite steep and follows a large bluff of land which sticks out into the sea. The cliffs above and below appear quite unstable and rocky but the view is spectacular. Once we rounded the bluff the road runs more or less following the coast and on our left was a collection of holiday homes nestled behind the dunes. Our lunch destination was one of these “baches” – Bill and Jill Maunsell’s home. Plenty of parking for our cars and lots of shady spots to partake of our picnic lunches and chat to other members while taking in the view and enjoying a cool sea breeze. Thank you, Jill and Bill for opening up your home for us to use. Also a big thank you to Francis and Gay Pointon for organising this years Coastal Run which nearly didn’t happen. Myrna Lane 6

An opportunity missed A young Scottish lad and lassie were sitting on a low stone wall, holding hands, and just gazing out over the loch. For several minutes they sat silently, then finally the girl looked at the boy and said," A penny for your thoughts, Angus.” "Well, uh, I was thinkin'. . .perhaps it's aboot time for a wee kiss.” The girl blushed, then leaned over and kissed him lightly on the cheek. Then he blushed. The two turned once again to gaze out over the loch. After a while the girl spoke again. "Another penny for your thoughts, Angus.” "Well, uh I was thinkin.... perhaps its noo aboot time for a wee cuddle.” The girl blushed, then leaned over and cuddled him for a few seconds. Then he blushed. Then the two turned once again to gaze out over the loch. After a while the girl spoke again. "Another penny for your thoughts, Angus.” "Well, uh I was thinkin...perhaps its aboot time you let me poot ma hand on your leg." The girl blushed, then took his hand and put it on her knee. Then he blushed. Then the two turned once again to gaze out over the loch. After a while the girl spoke again. "Another penny for your thoughts, Angus.” The young man knit his brow. "Well, now," he said, "My thoughts are a bit more serious this time.” "Really?" said the girl in a breathless whisper, filled with anticipation. "Aye," said the lad. The girl looked away in shyness, began to blush, and bit her lip in anticipation of the ultimate request. "Din'na ye think it's aboot time ye paid me the first three pennies

50 Year celebration planning Maureen Bull presented her work on her book to the last committee meeting. Maureen rightly brought up the question of how we as a club should mark the event. How do we celebrate? Is there to be a function? If so where? Do we want to invite the veteran owners of Triangular series i.e. Wellington and Horowhenua Is this a book launch only? Will there be an Anniversary Rally? (Not October if wet) Anniversary Plaques – design and colour? It would seem sensible to form an Anniversary subcommittee to deal with the function/rally and any other 50 year activities. If you think this is a good idea, please let the committee members know your suggestions for the make-up. The sub committee need not be made up of committee members but rather, or as well as, club members who are keen to help arrange the events. Let’s talk at the next club night ( Monday 5th Feb ) so we can get the ball rolling. The year is flying by and planning needs to begin.

19

This is important, please read As most members will be aware, Maureen Bull has been working very hard for some years now on the preparation of the 50 year history of our club . At this month’s committee meeting Maureen presented her work to date, which I can assure you, is not only comprehensive, but an outstanding piece of work, which will forever be a treasure for the club. Maureen’s passion for detail has required her to make an exhaustive search of the Wairarapa archives, as well as contacting members and digging through club records. Unfortunately some of the records she needs are missing. In particular she is very keen to find the Minute books for the years June 1997 to 16th June 2008. If you know of the whereabouts of these documents, please contact Maureen or any committee member.
