Retiring—CHB Branch Club Captains Annual Report 2024—2025
The incoming committee for the 2024-2025 year saw two new members. Ella Domper became our new secretary and Paul Jensen came on to the committee
In July Rod and Scarlett McKenzie organised a partly competitive run to Porangahau. Eleven cars took part with Gavin and Viv finishing as the winners.
August was the Daffodil Rally. This year it was based at Russell Park where the public came to viewed the cars. There was a run to Onga to view the old village and museum, then an afternoon tea in the hall.
September we had a dinner and quiz night at the Dannevirke Citizens club. Harry Lord won the trophy on behalf of CHB but was from Manawatu.
Bruce put on the CHB vintage car rally, thirteen took part along with seven non vintage. Cars came from Manawatu and Horowhenua. Lunch was at the Wards property under the trees. Later we were able to wander around the stands of Daffodils and pick what we wanted.
October was Rod and Scarlett's tour of Taranaki starting in Sanson with morning tea. The first night was in Hawera. After 3 days touring the Naki with dinners at the Taranaki VCC clubrooms, an Irish bar and the New Plymouth Club. The steam pudding at the VCC rooms was to die for. A very enjoyable few days. Thank you Rod and Scarlett.
November was the CHB Veteran Rally but the weather was such that the old cars were left on their trailers or in their sheds.
The Christmas function at Oruawharo was well attended and enjoyed.
Later in December Seton and Judy's reliability run around Pukeora was held.
January was beach time again ,going again to Paul and Judy's property. Great weather.
The gymkhana in February at Elsthorpe Domain was put on by Iain and Eva. Some interesting challenges were assigned for participants to negotiate.
February there was a visit to a chainsaw museum in Woodville, and over 400 chainsaws, there was plenty to look at. Lunch was at the Woodville railway Station, there we could see the renovations taking place and also see how the railways operated in days gone by. We also visited the home of an ex train driver who has a train load of railway memorabilia. A very interesting day.
In March the dinner meeting was cancelled due to the amount of roadworks in the area.
The twilight run was organised by Neil and Pat Malcolm. We travelled out to the coast, then back to the Porangahau Golf Club for soup and buns. Then it was back to the Waipukurau Club for a BBQ dinner. This was a successful and interesting event.
In May an eager group went ten pin bowling in Hastings. A lot of fun, laughter, and also frustration.
Later in May, Henk and Ella organised a run to Norsewood. We started with morning tea in Onga Onga. Then the long road to Norsewood to the Galloways property where we had lunch. The intention was to watch competitive racing model aircraft, but the wind was too strong for them to fly, instead we watched how the models were constructed using computer technology. Also in May several branch members attended a Child cancer event at the Waipukurau Race Course.
In June, Kaye hosted a Ladies Drivers Day. Thirteen cars attended, with six male participants donning a variety of female attire. Some interesting places visited and a lot of laughs had by all. Thank you to all members who put on events and to those who attended the events during the year.
This is my last report, it has been both fun and challenge. I have enjoyed it and now hand over the reigns to an experienced campaigner Rod Mckenzie. The committee puts a lot of time and energy organising our monthly events. Please try to come along and support there work. Iain and Eva Gollan organise the Club Dinner, menus and venues they do a great job.
Laurie Malcolmson. Retiring Club Captain.

The idea to organise and host this Vintage Rally began with a Trophy donated to Hawkes Bay VCC Branch about 15 years ago. The trophy was presented to the winner of the Hawkes Bay Vintage only rally. However the Rally lapsed after a couple of years and the trophy remained on display in their trophy cabinet.
It has now been returned to Bruce Poole at the CHB VCC Branch and will be presented each year to the winner of the CHB Vintage Rally.
The rally will be open to all VCC members and VCC Vintage eligible vehicles, (1919 to 1931 )
The trophy will be presented to 1st place getter and there will be 2nd and 3rd place prizes also.
The rally will start from Russell Park in Waipukurau with assembly time from 10.45am.
Briefing will be at 11.00am and first car away soon after. This late start will allow out of town entrants plenty of time to get to start venue.
The first part of the run will take you to a lunch stop with shelter if the sun is not shining, and hopefully daffodils to pick if you wish. BYO lunch and folding chair. Daffodils will be there to pick for a small charge. The funds will be donated to The Plunket Society.
The competitive part of the rally will begin at 1.30pm and take you on a variety of scenic back country roads in CHB and finish at the Waipukurau Club in Waipukurau for a BBQ meal and prize giving.
It is anticipated that BBQ and prize giving will finish by 6.00pm
Entry form and information will be published in July and August Bleat.
