Day 6 This day saw a few breakdowns, unfortunately, which were soon sorted out. We travelled along the canals to Lake Tekapo and Burkes Pass, stopping at Fairlie, where many of us decided to sample the famous pies.
After lunch, we wove our way through the beautiful South Canterbury countryside and the l-o-n-g mid- Canterbury straights, before reaching our final destination at Methven and our final fantastic dinner together.
Day 7 The group travelled on to Ohoka where they visited Kelvin Findlay’s fine collection of vintage and veteran vehicles and then on to McLeans Island to register for the Easter Rally, before finishing at Cutler Park. It is always good to be able to say that we travelled on roads that we’ve never travelled on before, and we certainly did this time!
Our thanks to Mark and Nicola for organising a fantastic Club Captain’s Tour. We thoroughly enjoyed it as did everyone else On Tour.

Day 2 saw us split from the bunch to travel to Teretonga for the George Begg Festival, which was absolutely fantastic. The sound of Denny Hulme’s Mc Laren driven down the main straight by Greg Murphy was indescribable as it screamed by. Meanwhile the main bunch travelled up to Te Anau via Wyndham, Hedgehope, Waianiwa and to Riverton for lunch. They then followed the very scenic route to Manapouri and Te Anau via Orepuki, Tuatapere and Blackmount. Dinner was at the local Town and Country Club. Day 3 was a lay day with many choosing to visit the Military Museum on the Te Anau –Mossburn road or the local Vintage Machinery Museum. It had been hoped for day trips to Mil-
ford Sound but, alas, the weather was against us.
Day 4 We visited Greg Elder at Riversdale. What a well-turned-out collection of vehicles- well worth a visit! Lunch was at the Mandeville Aviation Museum, then it was off to Alexandra via Waikaka, Heriot and Moa Flat. We then dropped down into the Teviot Valley and crossed the Clutha River at Millers Flat and back again at the Roxburgh Dam. The autumn colours up the Valley were superb, but not as spectacular as the trees going down into Conroy’s Gully, which were picture postcard material. Always a “must” at autumn time! Another fantastic meal was served at the Alexandra District Club. Day 5 Off to Clyde through Earnscleugh and onto Cromwell, with a quick walk-through Old Cromwell Town. Then it was off to Bannockburn and Highlands Motor Park, where we watched Mervyn take control of the Ford Mustang for some quick laps. From there it was a trip over the Lindis Pass to our night’s accommodation at Twizel.

The 2025 South Island Club Captain’s Tour
The SICC Tour had a great start with 30 cars lined up at Unity Park, looking out over Dunedin city and the harbour basin, where many photos were taken, before heading off south along the coast to Taieri Mouth. There was a choice of routes available for those who wanted to travel on gravel roads, continuing on the road through Akatore and Bull Creek, enjoying the coastal scenery, and those who did not, climbing over the hill to get great views of the Taieri Plain and lakes. We then travelled to lunch at Lawrence via Kaitangata, Balclutha and Tuapeka Mouth going up the north bank of the Clutha River.
After lunch, we continued down the south bank from Beaumont, which is a great cruising road with native bush lining the road. We turned off toward Waipahi, with miniature yellow flowers lining both sides of the road for most of the afternoon as we cruised around the rolling green hills of West Otago and into Southland. Our overnight stay was at Croydon Lodge in Gore and we were hosted by the local VCC branch who cooked up a delicious meal, complete with homemade fruit cake. (Thanks Mary!)

Aliastair Day with the Stirrers Spoon
Everything appears to be slowing down a little as the seasons change. It has been a good time for the South Island Club Captains Tour which finished in time for the South Island Easter rally. This month has seen me travelling up and down from Christchurch with my car. It is a pity when the local agents become impossible to deal with, but the Christchurch people have now repaired it and it is real good again.
Looking ahead are the our branch AGM and Election of committee. Please put your name forward to help fill the vacant positions that are arising if you can, new blood is good
The New Branch Constitution is on hold now until the National Constitution is accepted so a Special General Meeting will have to be called to pass our new Branch Constitution after that.
The Otago rally saw a number of members on patrol at strategic points along the route on the Sunday keeping the public out of danger.
The PV rally with the Otago Classic Car club was a very good outing and the visits were very interesting and the whole day out was very good thanks to Stuart Niell

Branch Constitution – as mentioned last month, the committee is working on updating the branch constitution so we can re-register under the new Incorporated Societies Act by the end of March 2026. Once finalised we will be calling for feedback before it is voted on by the branch members. More information will be sent out in due course.
Committee Meeting minutes – are you interested in what is discussed at the committee meeting? A copy of the previous months’ minutes will now be posted on the notice board in the hall after they have been ratified by the committee. 25/35 Year Membership Badges – please contact me by the end of May if you believe you are due (or overdue) your membership badge so I can arrange for this to be presented at the annual dinner and prizegiving in July.
Branch AGM – as per the notice of meeting in the Road runner, this is being held on the 15th June preceded by a pot luck lunch. It would be nice to see more members at the lunch as it a great way to catch up with others who may not be regular attendees at branch runs, noggins etc.
Branch Committee - there are some vacancies on the committee, namely the Club Captain position which has been vacant for a couple of years. This position may sound daunting however if a few of you formed a sub-committee you could share the load.
Guest Speaker – we have arranged for local identity and Mayor Jule Radich to be our guest speaker on Friday 25th July where he will be talking on Conveyance, convenience and cars – what is the future of flow in Dunedin. Having heard Jules speak at previous events, I’m sure it will be entertaining so I encourage you to come along and bring your mates. Supper will be provided after the talk.
Branch Facebook page - Did you know that along with the main club Facebook page, Otago branch also has its own page – search for Otago Vintage Car Club. I set it up a few years ago and have been doing my best to look after it however would love to add another administrator who can help with content etc. Please contact me if you are interested.
Branch Activities - We all know the success of the Wednesday morning noggin and natter plus the Monthly Thursday run however - what can we offer members that are not able to attend due to work or other commitments and that may also attract new members. Some suggestions are Fish & Chip nights, Breakfast at Emerson’s (or similar). Please let me know if these appeal to you so we can organise. Have you been visiting other branches lately? Remember to let me know so I can keep a note of this for when the committee look to allocate the trophies. VIC and Lighting Endorsement Forms - These are available via the website vcc.org.nz/vic-vehicle classification for you to download and complete before contacting one of the VIC Officers.
Donations of books, memorabilia etc – if you or someone you know is looking at donating items to the branch- can you please contact me in the first instance so I can make suitable arrangements for how these are to be donated.
days. Here they crossed the Railway tracks and headed into Barewood Station – a private road with a steep descent into Deep Stream. Along this track some needed to take extra care on the slippery, narrow and very muddy sections as they crossed the stream and ascended up the other side of the valley, with one Model T needing a tow out of a sticky situation. The back up crew were happy to release it back to its driver at the top of the hill.
Back onto more solid ground part of the group decided to take a more direct route into Outram via Lee Stream School and Clarks Junction while the more adventurous continued onto Lee Flat Road, across Lake Mahinerangi, through a stretch of forest onto Waipori Falls and down the narrow gravel Waipori Gorge through to Berwick and Mosgiel.
The group gathered at the Black Sheep Restaurant for Prizegiving Dinner that evening.
Nevin has a fetish for dobbing people in! Out came his bag of minties and so he proceeded to award people for their various ‘Mintie Moments’ – An Overland which had to be saved from its smoking brakes, a car which had mechanical issues not far from the start – was replaced so the owner could continue with the tour, the car that showered a photographer as it sped through a ‘Ford’- to name just a few. The Stirrer’s Paddle was presented to Alistair Day and the Hard Luck Trophy (fashioned from a Model T brake drum) was presented to Trevor Johnson. Greg North has produced a Video on You Tube - https//youtu.be/9KV 4Q0QBks?feature=shared and Sarah Miller and Phil Berry who have taken photos – come down from North Otago.
Robyn Willems did a sterling job taking photos for the Black Sheep Restaurant. If you are interested in seeing them, send her an email at roblovespigs@gmail.com.
Nevin is already planning his next Adventure for 2026.
Report by Marion McConachie Photos contributed by various people
2025 Back RoadAdventure Report
At our Branch AGM in June 24 Nevin Gough was nominated onto our branch committee and the first thing he hoped to be able to do was –arrange an event for Veteran and Vintage vehicles that would take them off the main roads and onto a bit of gravel over a two day period. The Back Road Adventure was born.
Nevin – advertised this event via social media, branch newsletters and word of mouth during any branch events that he attended. The overnight venue was announced and people had to arrange their own accommodation for the night. Entries started coming in and the numbers from across the country and Australia surprised Nevin.
On Saturday 22nd of March 26 cars and their crews arrived at the Black Sheep Café in Mosgiel for briefing and morning tea. A line up of Model T’s, Model A’s, Chevrolet’s, Buick, Nash, Overland, Dodges, Hudson, Chrysler, and Delage vehicles headed off to make their first ’ford’ crossing in Gladfield Road, Willems Chev narrowly missed showering the photographer with water. Taking the highway to Sutton they turned into view the Salt Lake before travelling the gravel road to the west of Middlemarch –Middlemarch was their lunch stop. After lunch they travelled over the Moonlight and narrow Nenthorne Roads to Macraes Gold Mine. The plan to visit the Golden Point Historic Reserve was cancelled due to the Macraes Mining Co staging an open day to celebrate 35 years of operation at the site. So, some roads were closed to the public. The crews turned back downhill towards Hyde and into Waipiata Road at Kokonga. Some stopping at the Hotel for an infamous pie and refreshments. Everyone managed to secure accommodation in Ranfurly where they had their evening meal at the Hotel. This was a good venue despite the challenges the caterers had with our numbers and the unexpected number of casual diners arriving.
Rain overnight and in the morning helped to dampen down the gravel roads to be travelled on Sunday. These took the cars out to Naseby and back towards Hyde and over narrow tracks that took them back to Middlemarch for lunch. With overcast skies they travelled east and just past Sutton they turned in towards Pukerangi, where the Taieri Gorge Train finishes these .
Vero Insurance -The VCC Vero scheme is solely for financial members and the discount we enjoy ceases when your membership is cancelled either through nonpayment of subs, resignation or death. National Office can arrange for it to be transferred to a joint member, so the simplest way to continue receiving the discount is to add your spouse to your membership. This means that in the unfortunate event of the main member passing, the surviving spouse has time to decide what to do without worrying about the insurance. Please contact me if you want more details.
Newsletters from other branches -remember to check the VCC website each month to read what is happening in other branches around the country. You can also find their event entry forms there as well. The website address is https:// vcc.org.nz/news-from-our-branches/

into Milton itself.
On SH1, south to Allison Road and family farm with the big grain silo’s. A great collection of Ford cars and assorted trucks, farm machinery, that have been used by them over the years. Back to just North of Milton to visit the butchery shop replica, complete with the knives, saws, scales, and sawdust on the floor. In an adjacent large shed was the ‘Mens’ Shed” of Milton where coffins were being made by various men who attend, either for themselves, or to order.
The afternoon concluded with the ‘spotters’ results and question results. Best going to Robert McAuliffe and Murray Randle.
Grateful thanks to Brent Willems and Stuart Neill for putting arrangements together. Happy Motoring – Merv Thompson
Vero IFHM 2026 is coming! 15 to 21 March 2026
Registrations are now open online www.historicmotoring.org.nz
We’re looking forward to seeing many of you in our lovely area, so check out the registration page if you haven’t already done so. Also, we have a number of overseas entries that would love to be able to come, but need a loan of a vehicle. Many would have liked to have brought their own vehicles over, particularly from both Queensland and Western Australia. Getting these into New Zealand was not an issue, however reentry costs and conditions (a recent Australian Government law change), prohibit this exercise for most.
This is an opportunity to make friends, help out others, and potential to do the same in another country.
I note below the resumes of entrants and would love you to pass on these requests to your members please, through emails, word of mouth and your club magazine. You will understand that the sooner they have this teed up the easier it is to make arrangements, e.g. flights, registration etc.
Thank you so much for your help with this. I have particularly targeted the South Island for ease of transport for some of these international guests and am very thankful for any assistance you might be able to give to enable them to attend.
Kind regards.

2025 Combined VCC and Otago Classic Motoring Club Run
On Sunday 30th March the combined club car run was held, leaving from the car park off Thomas Burns Street, behind the Dunedin Railway Station. The grey sky may have put some members off from venturing out but our Met. Service is getting pretty accurate these days. Over the hill North or South it is most of the time better than central Dunedin as we found no rain all afternoon as it turned out.
At 1pm there was a good number of cars and people to issue the rally sheet and hear a driver brief on what was to happen. We were warned of ‘spotters’ looking for driver infringements. Ther rally sheet also had a number of questions to answer spread over the route. We could then leave on the journey.
This procedure invariably works very well as the spacing sorts itself out with other traffic you slot into. It followed that there were several periods no members cars could be seen in front or behind.
Some years ago, there was an accepted rule for those planning rally routes not to have many questions, signs. Building items to look out for should be on the left only, and avoid traffic lights if at all possible. We began south via Corstorphine – Stevensons Road – Concord – Green Island. The small changes of the Concord Tavern and the new McDonalds at Green Island looked interesting to investigate further somtime. The question of the paua shell numbers between Brighton and Taieri Mouth was the catch question as this stretch of road is some 15 kms plus (Don’t hold your breath or blink). Once seen not forgotten in this context – Did you spot the number?
Kuri Bush along with Taieri Mouth soon came into view exposing the difficult sandbar crossing, testing many seamen over the years. The fishing boat wharf with a huge 10ft “Walt Disney” shark hanging for all to view. Do not launch your canoe here!
Over the hill to Waihola was a great piece of road with fresh road markings along with a very good road surface. Waihola to Milton, turning left around the back road of the “Corrections’ facility (The Milton Hilton) past the Golf Course, a new housing development, and
FROM THE EDITOR
Thank you to Colin and Merv for their reports this month. It has made my job easier and it is nice to be able to read someone else’s stories. This past month has been full of events happening across the country and it has been interesting to see the variations in numbers attending these. To me it looks like most of you members like to just go out and motor your vehicles, with out the need for competition and around town motoring. I have keep some reports for next month.
RALLY OTAGO – 4-6TH APRIL
Thank you to Bill Veitch, Andrew Roxburgh, Ross McTaggart, Graeme Duthie, Kevin Mason and John Dow and his two friends who volunteered for the Sunday afternoon to Marshall a Road block on the Kuri Bush section of the Rally. Your time and commitment to this event is much appreciated by all those involved with this event.

A resume of our 10 day nostalgic wanderings around Southland and Central by Tom Grant accompanied by Kelvin Henderson in the MGTD.
Thursday 27th and Friday 28th
Tarras, Alexandra and up the Manuaherikia to the Cambrians where my Great Grandfather John Beattie one of the family off the Plada, had the Welsh Harp Hotel when they were digging gold from the stream beside the pub, part of the Hotels original wall still sits at this site and is being protected by a roof from the elements. (More tears). Went onto Naseby, Danseys and over the pass to Duntroon. Kelvin drove this leg as I had been over it from the other side. We only passed 2 cars, one with a caravan, Kurow for fuel then Omarama for 2 nights in a flash hotel, where I arranged for Kelvin to have a hands on experience in a glider, I also had one myself. It was 27 years since the last one. I met a few people from the early days of gliding. I was asked to give a talk at the briefing on the beginnings of gliding and the area (more tears) when the area was undeveloped, just a dust bowel, you couldn’t see the tow plane on take off so you followed the rope.
We then visited Lake Ohau now a modern village at Lake Middleton, and Twizel to Tekapo for lunch through Burkes pass to Geraldine. No accommodation available here so moved on to Temuka.
Sunday 29th
Visited my friends Russell and Lynda Brodie on Rangatata Island where he has East Canterbury Aviation, instructing in Microlights and inspecting Aircraft. His son flew a large number of aircraft (I think 16) on the day he went solo. Russell has a large collection of all sorts of aircraft parts and motorbikes. Kelvin was in his element. Now homeward bound.
We shared the driving I did the morning and Kelvin the afternoon. The MG never missed a beat, delightful at 3,500 Revs 50MPH indicated. We covered 3000 miles by the counter.
This was an emotional, wonderful trip with Kelvin who was good company and navigated with the assistance of his cell phone. This vehicle attracts so much attention and it gives me huge pleasure to see other people enjoy it.
Where to next you might ask? God Willing I can find a compatible partner to join me on more adventures in this fun little car.
