Onacoldmiserablenight,wesawagreatturnouttoour48thAGM. BothJulieandIhavedecidedtoremainonthecommitteeforanother term,andwewouldliketothankyouforyoursupportoverthepast year.Welookforwardtoanotherexciting12monthsofclubeventsand activities.

OneoftheawardspresentedonthenightwastheClubCaptains’choice fortheLaurieJensonTrophy.ThisyearitwaspresentedtoVerdon Heath.Verdonwasunfortunatelyawayonthenighttoreceivethe trophy,anditwasacceptedonhisbehalfbyourpatron,TomHayes. OverthepastyearVerdonhasrepresentedtheHorowhenuaVCCin manyralliesupanddownthecountry,competinginbothMotorCycle andVehicleevents.Hehasgenerouslygivenhisowntimevisiting members’garagesofferingadvice,andcompletingover13VIC (VehicleIdentificationCard)applicationsthisyearalready,andisalso ontheNationalVICCommittee.Wecommendhisefforts,andhis overwhelmingsupporttotheclub,andthisiswhatmadeVerdona worthyrecipienttoreceivethismostprestigiousaward. OurlastgarageraidwasinOhau,whereweviewedaselectionofover 50carsownedbyJeffBryce.Jeffhasbeencollectingtheseformany years,andhasthemstoredintwoverylargeoldchickensheds,packed inlikesardines.Theroofsontheseshedshavebeguntodeteriorateand thereweresomeleaks.Jefforiginallyhad33Londontaxis,howeveris nowdownto25.Therewasone1962STypeJaguarthatmanyofus wereinterestedin,aselectionofMercedesBenzovervariousyears, Volvos,Renaults,thelargestselectionofNSURo80sIhaveseenanda Mark1Mini.Somecarswereforsale,butIunderstandmanymembers willhavetodiscussthisfirstwiththeirfinancemanagers/partners.

Manymemberscameawaywonderingwhattheownerwasgoingtodo withallthesecars,manydeterioratingunderathicklayerofbirdpoo, astheshedshavenodoorsandourlittlefeatheredfriendshaveeasy access.

OurMothers’Day,TrainExcursionWellingtontoWoodvilleandreturn wasagreatday,andverysuccessful.ManythankstoJulie’s organization,andmanyofuswouldliketorepeatitsometime.Julie’s reportislaterinthisissue.

OnSaturday14thMaywastheManawatuPostEraRally.Therewas onlyoneentryfromHorowhenuathistime.Verdonsaidthatitwasa greatrallywithtimedsectionfromManawatuclubroomsto Whanganui,andallhadagreattimewithplentyofgoodcountrysideto see.

WedidnothaveanyentriesintheWhanganuiAnnual71stRallythis year.Ipersonallymissedoutunfortunately,notrealizingthatentries hadclosedofftwoweeksbeforetheevent.Therallywasin2stages, morningandafternoon,bothtimedwithsomechecksin-between.The winnerwasonly18secondsout.

Thisyear,FordNewZealandhavecomeonboardwithNationalVCC andbothcontributingtowardsfundraising.AtourlastAGMthe membershipshowedtheiroverwhelmingsupportforDaffodilDay. WhoamI?IwasborninWoolwich,SouthLondonin1950,the sonofaverysuccessfulbuilder.Myunclewasafarmerand that’swhereIspentallmyschoolholidaysandpromptedmeto askmyuncleforanapprenticeshipinfarming.WellIwasalready drivingoldFordsontractorsfromtheageof10soitseemedlike anaturalprogression.Headvisedmethatitwasnotagoodidea becauseevenintheearly‘60sfarmingwaschanging,andnotfor thebetter,IwouldbebetteroffgoingintothemotortradeasI hadbeencarnutssinceatoddler,orsoIamtold. Ienteredmyapprenticeshipinthemid‘60swithmyfather’s blessingashewasthinkingofretiringandbuyingapub,and mumbeingatrainedchef,wantedtodosomethingapartfrom beingahousewife.

Afteronly6monthsinaRoverandJaguaragencyIhadto transfertoagaragenearapubintheKentcountryside,and foundmyselfinaBMCdealershipwithaRollsRoyceand Bentleyfranchiseaswell,andthat’swhereIspentmy apprenticeshipworkingonmodernbutalsooldermodelsas70% ofourclientshadprewarcars!Myloveofoldertransportwas confirmed.Dadbeingalsoaloverofoldertransport,especially steam-powered,meantwespentalotoftimeatsteamand transportshows.

WhilstanapprenticeIjoinedthelocalTA,aRoyalSignals parachutetrainedairbornediplomaticwirelessservice,spending timewithsomeeliteregimentsindifferentpartsoftheworld, whilststillworkingafulltimejob.Ihadalotofsupportfrommy employerwhowasaretiredBrigadierGeneral.

AftermytimewasupIwenttoworkforanagriculturalengineer andthenasawmill,ontractors,etctoforestryequipment,anda lotofexMODvehicleswhichwereemployedinthatindustry.I thenspenttimeasaheavygoodsdriverhaulingmostlyfruitto marketsallovertheUK.ThenIhadabrainwave,orbrainstorm: I’lljointhemerchantNavyasanengineer.IjoinedBP,andafter amonth’strainingIfoundmyselfonthebiggestdieselengined vesseltheyhadatthetime,a70,000-tonVLCC(verylargecrude

carrier).Theenginewasathree-storeyhigh9-cylindertwostroke, butafteronetripIdecidedthatitwasnotforme,having experiencedcrawlinginthroughtheinletmanifoldtogetunder the5ftdiapistonstochangesealsonthefixedrodattachedto thepiston,amongstotherthings.

Ireturnedhomeandwentbackonthelorrieswhilstservinginthe TA.Thisledmetoadeploymentthatwashighlyclassified,and stillis,whichmadeupmymindthatsoldieringwastobemy career.

ImadeatransfertotheRoyalElectricalandMechanical Engineers(REME).ThisiswhereIspenttheremainderofmy22 yearsservice,workingontanksanddrivingthem,runningrepair sectionswithinregimentsandultimatelybecamethemostsenior WarrantOfficerWO1inthecorpsasaGarrisonSgtMajandOC workshopsinBrunei.

UponretirementIsetmyselfuprepairinggardenmachineryfora shortwhileuntiltwothingshappened,thefirstbeingthatthelocal stores,similartoBunningsandMitre10,weresellingthings cheaperthanIcouldservicethem.Thesecondwasthatseveral peoplesawarestorationthatIhaddoneandrequestedmy services,somyrestorationandtransportcompanystarted, spanningnearly23years.

WecametoNZonaholiday(includingalmostdrivingintothe Christchurchearthquake)whichconvincedustogohomeand sellup,gettingourpermanentresidency,sponsoredbyour daughter.Thistooktwoyears,andwearrivedinMay2014, movingtoOtakiinJulyafterourcontainerarrivedfromtheUK. WehadjoinedtheVCCinJuneandwenttotheWellington branchbeforemovingupthecoast.Havingnoideawhere HorowhenuawaswekeptgoingtotheWellingtonbranchuntilwe wereinvitedtojoinfriendsfromtheretogoonourfirstTararua Trundle.WethentransferredtoHVCCandhereweare.

TheHorowhenuaBranch’sMayoutingon Sunday11thcoincidedwithMothers’Day. Forsomethingalittledifferenttheday’s travelwasaboardvintagerail,leavingour vintageautomobilesathome.

Thelevelofsupportfromourbranch memberswasmuchappreciated.Having bookedanentirecarriage,all55seatswere filled.Manythankstoeveryonewhotookpart.

MotherNaturewasonoursideprovidinga warm,clear,sunnymorning.Thiswasdoublyfortuitousasthetrainran approximatelyoneandahalfhoursbehindscheduleduetosignalling failureinWellington.Thisaddedtotheadventureand,nopunintended, spiritswouldhavebeendampenedhadtheweatherbeeninclement.

AswejourneyedtowardsourdestinationofWoodvilleitwas interestingtoviewmanyofthefamiliarralliedroadsfromyetanother angle.

AtPalmerstonNorththe KiwiRaildiesellocomotive wasdetachedanditwassteam allthewaytoWoodvilleand backtoPalmerstonNorth.

Thetriptookusunderthe bridgingatthesouthernendof thenewManawatu expressway,thenprovideda clearviewofthenowdefunctManawatuGorgeroad.Thecantilevering

oftheroadgaveatotallydifferentandunexpectedperspectivetowhen weusedtodrivetheroute.

OnceinWoodvilletherewasmuchinterestintheservicingofthesteam locomotive.Members ofthelocal communityputona sausagesizzle, togetherwithlight refreshmentsavailable forpurchaseinthe originalstation buildings.

Giventheaforementionedtimedelayonthenorthernlegofjourney,the southernreturnwasexecutedwithonlyabouta15minutedifferential. Animpressivepickupoflosttime.

Thedayitselfwasextremelyenjoyableandaddingtothefunwas havingourownbranchmemberBruceLawrieasCarSteward.As alwaysBrucewastheconsummatehostandprovidedhumouralongthe way.ThankyouBruce.

Ashout-outofthanksalsototwoother branchmemberswhowereaboardforthe trip.ThesewereWintonClealasCar Stewardonaneighbouringcarriageand BobSmythwhoprovidedcommentaryof sightsandplacesofinterestduringthetrip. Withoutvolunteerslikethesegentlemen givingtimeandefforttoorganisationssuch asSteamIncorporated,muchhistorywould belostandtheseexperienceswouldnotbe possible.

ThisissomethingIhaveneverlookedforwardtodoing. Feelingthisway,Iwilltryandcoverthesereasonsandstill giveanoverallreportastohowIseetheClubatthispointin time.

IhavemadeitclearthatIwillbestandingdownfromthe positionofChairman,theofficeIhaveheldforthepastthree years.WhenIwasfirstelectedtotheposition,Ididitwitha numberofreservationsandwithanumberofundisclosed ambitionsIwantedtoseecometofruition.Itiswithagreat dealofsatisfactionInowwalkawayhavingachieved,inmy mindanyway,whatIsetouttodo.

AsIseeittoday,theClubasawholeisinaverygoodstate withthemembershiphappywithwhereweare.Activities, nomatterhowbigorsmall,arebeingwellreceivedand attendedbyallthosewhowishtopartake,andthishasbeen ontheriseforsometimenow.Theattendanceatmeetingsis nowverysatisfyingwithnumbersandinterestbeingshown byallwhogetthere.Yes,therewillalwaysbethe‘quiet’or the‘paper’membersbutthatisforthemtodecide.Their choice.

Thecamaraderieexistingwithinthemembershipis somethingthatispleasingtoseeandbepartof.TheSwap Meetisprobablythebestexampleofwhatweallmeantothe ClubandwhatthemembershipoftheClubmeanstousall. Thenwecanlookattheindividualinterestsofmembersand whatparttheytakeintheworkingsandexistenceoftheClub, howtheyvolunteerandthencommittoatask,carryoutthe dutytothebestoftheirabilityandintheend,getthejob done.

DuringthecourseofmytenureintheChairIhaveseensome ofthememberstaketheextrasteptoachieveagoalandin somecasesthisstepcanonlybedescribedasamassiveleap. ThisIhavebeenabletorecognisewhenithashappened,but theonethingIfindextremelydifficulttosortoutanddecide on,isarecipientforeachofthetwotrophiesIhavehadto awardeachyear.Idonotliketosingleoutanyparticular personforsometaskortaskstheyhaveundertaken.Thisis madeeversomuchharderwhenIhaveanumberofmembers whointheirownwaydeservetherecognitionfortheirtime andcontributionsmadetothesuccessfulrunningofourclub. Inasense,Iknowinmyheartthepersonreceivingtheaward sharesitwithanumberofothers,notthathe/sheisawareof this.

Withallthisinmind,Itakethisopportunitytothankthe membersoftheHorowhenuaVintageCarClubforallowing methehonourofbeingyourChairmanforthelastthreeyears. IthanktheCommitteemembers,oneandall,fortheir enthusiasmanddedicationoverthisperiod.Ithasbeena timethatIhavethoroughlyenjoyedaswellasbeingvery proudtosaythatIwastheChairmanofthebestClubinthe Country.IfeelasthoughIcannowstepasidehappilyand leaveyouinthehandsofmysuccessor.

WewenttoseeacollectionofEuropeancars.Theownerhad boughtseveralLondontaxis,intendingtooperateataxi serviceinLevin.However,yearsofbureaucracyand regulationsagainstthisplanforcedhimtoabandontheidea.

EveryappliancemadeforAustraliahasacrewsurvival"halo" systemwhichcansprayacurtainofwateroverthecrewcaband thetyres,alongwithitsownairsupplyforthecrewinside,and theappliancealwayskeepsatleast20%ofitson-boardwaterin reservetosupplythehalosystem.

Notsurprisingly,anewfully-equippedfireenginecancostwell overamilliondollars,andwesaw36appliancesofvarioustypes intheassemblyshopsduringourvisit,abigproportiondestined forexporttoAustralia.Someincorporatedhigh-reachladder systemswhichcomefromaspecialistmanufacturerin Switzerland.Otherswere"heavypumpers",capableofpumping 4,000litres/minute,usingspecialisedpumpsmadeinAmerica poweredbyadedicatedDeutzenginefromGermany.

Apartfromthesespecialiseditemsfromoverseas,andthebare cab/chassissuppliedbyScania,Volvo,IvecoorIsuzu,Fraser manufacturesthousandsofotherpartsin-house,andourtour includedCNCmachining,laser-cutting,fabricationandwelding shops.

With110staffinLowerHuttandanother50inFraser'sfactoryin Australia,itwasgreattoseeaproperKiwiengineeringbusiness notonlymanufacturingverysophisticatedproductsintheHutt Valley,butthrivingintoday'sglobalmarketplace.

Afterwards,mostfolksthenspentacoupleofhoursnattering overlunchatBoulcottGolfClub.
