Vintage Car Club of NZ Inc. – Central Otago Branch
The Sidchrome Imp made famous by Jim Richards

FEATURECAR

Another famous car on exhibit at Highlands. Truly the collection is amazing, and we need to support this venture. Central Otago is a neat place to live, and we have so much to be grateful for.

Editorial

The opinions expressed here are the editor’s only and are not endorsed by the club.

One of the things that fascinates about cars is how the manufacturers build in a familiarity factor; for example, my Range Rover still reminds me of my Grandfather’s 1960s Rover that we used to take him on Sunday drives in Both vehicles felt/feel solid, slightly ponderous, big leather seats that are comfortable for hours, but they can get going if you give them the jandal as Scott McLaughlin once said. If only the Range Rover had an analogue clock (the later ones do). There is 45 years difference in age but you still know they are from the same family

Similarly, I once owned at the same time two Fords - a XC Falcon workhorse and a XF Fairmont Ghia. The XC was pretty basic, a bench seat, three on the tree and no power steering, the XF was plusher with bucket seats and power steering and all the fruit. I can’t remember the number of times I hopped in one after driving the other one and got to the intersection and either not used enough steering (XC )or too much (XF). The XC had more turns lock to lock than the XF but they still felt the same until you turned the wheel.

Rose has had three BMWs (Bloody Money Wasters). She has had a 325, a 330 and currently a 528. Each one faster and more economical than the previous but all feel the same. Solid, good ride and superb handling and a constant threat to your license with German Autobahn performance. The 528 is speed-limited to 230kph so on NZ roads it always feels like you are dawdling. Ergonomically, they all feel the same. The controls fall to hand without you needing to think about it, so you know you are in a BMW. I think we will always own one despite a few frustrations.

This can’t be a coincidence. The designers must consider these aspects when designing a new car. But what happens when there is no history? Is that why some new makes of Chinese origin feel more like a play station and there is more discussion about connectivity to the internet or your phone rather than what performance the car delivers.

This month’s new Chinese brand for sale in NZ is a JAC. Apparently, a reference to the JAC Of All Trades. I think they forgot, or were not aware, that the full phrase was JAC Of All Trades, master of none. Is that an omen for the future?

How many brands do we need?

On my pet hobby horse at present Dr Goggle tells me there are 150 active automotive brands in China, of which two thirds are entirely domestic brands. Given that they are tariffed out of the USA, attention is going to be paid to developing export markets elsewhere in the world, including here. History is littered with failed automotive enterprises. Look how many of our car’s manufacturers still exist. It is a brave or naive man who thinks all these brands are going to survive and will be provided with aftersales service in 5 -10 years’ time. So, what is the risk profile of people buying these products now? I have never considered myself as being particularly conservative or risk averse, but I would think twice about buying one at the present time.

Don’t think I am anti-Chinese I am not. Manufacturers like Nissan and Mitsubishi are in real financial difficulties. VW are closing factories and outfits like JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) are shooting themselves in the foot by deciding they don’t like their present customers and are designing new models for customers they don’t have. How smart is that?

Well, this is my last issue, so I am signing out. As I stated before, I am a bit of a fraud at this current VCC business because although I am a confirmed petrol head my interests are wider than the VCC and I think it is a real shame the VCC has not adopted the 1960s to 1995 period very much at all. At best, the VCC interest in this period is lukewarm but to me it is a rich period of NZ motoring heritage and is being neglected by, and lost to, the VCC. History such as Shellsport, NZ Rallying, Production car racing, etc well fit into the 30-year VCC eligibility and if there was more interest I would happily step up and increase my involvement. I had anticipated that the VCC would be more interested

I would like to thank the people who have helped me in the last couple of years, particularly John Gray over the last 12 months when I have not been able to attend events and also our chairmen Noel and John, our secretary Graham and also Gerry Spencer, who is a real loss to our club.

Good luck to the new Editor and I will be available if you want any advice, not that I can provide much value.

Regards

Garry

I was disappointed that a few of the attending vehicles came with no WOF. If by some misfortune you had an accident, your insurance would be forfeited. My question. Why should you take the risk as it is quite expensive to restore a vehicle today. Plus, when you attend a rally, it states on the entry form that a current WOF and registration is a basic requirement needed to enter a rally in any Branch Club Matters

The clubrooms are at present going to have a makeover with new Carpet tiles going to be laid.

Christmas has come early for the Parts Department Blokes as they have now purchased some new and necessary tools to help with dismantling vehicle parts

An additional Fridge is being investigated.

Security lighting and parts shed lighting are also in the pipeline to be installed once quotes have been accepted.

John and Wendy Gray organised a great Quiz afternoon - evening that was attended by many with a few thought-provoking questions. Can’t wait until the next one.

It’s my turn to be the guest speaker at the next meeting on everything you need to know about wooden car body restoration and bending timber, so see you there.

Happy motoring

ClubCaptainsReport

June 2025

The trees have certainly turned to their Autumn hues and most leaves have fallen, the days are getting cooler, and morning frosts are more common. Three events from my portfolio this past month. The ‘May Club Night’ speaker was Janeen Wood, from the Southern Lakes Trails Trust, who presented a very good talk on the work of the Trust and an update of progress on the Kawarau Gorge Track. A full report can be found elsewhere in this issue.

I finally got to try a new event for the Branch, mid-month, a ‘Quiz Afternoon’, which replaced the ‘Sunday Run’. The Quiz was followed by a barbeque tea, with all food supplied by the club. The event received some very positive feedback, so I will organise another next year. A full report on this event can also be found elsewhere in this issue. We are also traveling to the Waipiata Hotel for the May ‘Thursday Muster’ and a report on this event should also be found elsewhere in this addition.

With regard to ‘Club Night’, over the next three months, the committee have decided to open the Clubrooms at 7.00pm as usual, but the “Meeting’ will

start at 7.30pm, instead of 8.00pm, due to winter driving conditions for those from out of town. These winter hours start for the June meeting.

My past month seems to have been consumed with continuing the drama of chemically stripping what seemed to be a “perfectly good paint finish”, on my 1967 E-Type Roadster, except it wasn’t. Well, the stripping job on the main car is now completed, and the car was delivered to Michael Stewart Restorations last Monday for them to continue the work of feathering the paintwork to the panel edges, so that the expensive process can start of repainting the car in its splendid ‘Signal Red’ paintwork.

My present task this week, is stripping all the ‘Red’ paint from the exterior surface of the bonnet. Same car, but a completely different process, this time the paint is being removed by a high-speed air powered gun, with strip and clean disks. As many of you will know, an E-Type has a very large bonnet. It’s approximately 1.8 m long x 1.7 m wide and has sides and curves under at the front. A measure up, has equated that the exterior surface is approximately 6.0m2, which is a big area to strip by a 3” dia handheld buffer. However, 12 hours of hard graft has seen the job nearly finished. Quite a relief, but it has saved a few K of financial pain.

Restoration is a big part of my enjoyment in my Classic Car hobby. I undertook 2 ½ years of “Auto Restoration Course” at Manakau Tech, back in the late 1970’s at 4 hrs per week of night classes, and while I still remember enough to get me through with the basics of what is needed, I now however, leave the ‘heavy lifting’ to the professionals.

The latest work on my two current restorations, has bought forth a few handy solutions to common problems when working on our cars, so I am considering starting a new column in Puff n Stuff, called “John’s Handy Hints” to pass on some of this information. Watch this space.

CLUBNIGHTREPORT

WEDNESDAY 14th May 2025

Janeen Wood – Southern Lakes Trail Trust

Kawarau Gorge Trail

Event Report: John Gray

Janeen started her presentation with a well-illustrated and very informative overview of her trusts work on the four main trails they are responsible for creating. The first was the Lake Dunstan Trail, which was established to cater for an estimated 7,000 users per year. However, the first year exceeded all expectations, with 85,000 users in the first year and over 250,000 in the first four years.

The trusts second priority was the Kawarau Gorge Trail, of which, more than half of the total track has already been formed. There were lots of legislative and practical hurdles to jump over with this trail, which delayed the start by around 3-4 years.

Janeen showed us a map of the trail, indicating the parts that have been completed, what structures have been built and where the new bridges will be built. There will be two bridges built across the Kawarau River, one approximately 1km below the Nevis River confluence, and another just below the Victoria road bridge. There will also be another couple of smaller

bridges to span gorges on the track itself. A few clip-ons, steel track support structures, around sheer cliffs, will complete the track, where alternative routes are not available.

Main Kawarau Gorge Trail route -Map Courtesy Southern Lakes Trail Trust

PriorityThree for theTrust, is the completion of the Lake RoxburghTrail. There is a 12km gap in the track, the path through which has been under negotiation with various Government Departments. The leasehold landowner and Trust are delighted that negotiation are now complete with the Government and are delighted that construction can be completed over the 2025-26 building season.

Priority Four, is completion of the Wanaka to Cromwell Trail. Sections of the track at both ends have been complete for some time, but some section, especially at the Wanaka end, require upgrading. Wanaka to Luggate Rock, is considerably formed, and Cromwell to Smiths Way is completed, however there are a few difficulties with land access on the South-West side of the Clutha above Lake Dunstan, so there will also be two quite long bridges required to provide access to a track on the East side of the river, from south of the Lindis confluence to south of the Luggate Rock area.

Our Club, thanks Janeen for her very informative talk. The committee agreed to a $200 donation toThe Southern Lakes TrailsTrust.ThisTrust are providing an amazing amenity for our area, and I encourage any of you who wish to support the fantastic work they are doing to consider making a personal

donation towards the Trails Trust fundraising, if you can do so. The Southern Lakes Trail Trust web site is www.southernlakestrails.nz, which is well worth a look.

The Trust bank account details are: SouthernLakes Trails. 060917-0704261-00 Please mention you are a VCC member, if you make a donation thanks. Also include your name and details, and Janeen will send back a receipt for a Tax Deduction.

SUNDAY 18th MAY 2025

Event Organiser and Report: John Gray

The inaugural, “Branch Quiz Afternoon” was held on Sunday 18th May, after being postponed in my first attempt to run this event; on a Saturday night last year; when I found that the proposed time, coincided with an All-Blacks Test. Fast forward to 2025, and the decision to run this event, in place of the May Sunday Run.

Prior indications of attendance were called for to enable teams to be formed, printing to be undertaken; and catering to be arranged. There was a great response, from 24 members, enabling the formation of six teams of four.

The ‘Quiz Master” selected the team members with no spouses or partners in the same teams!!!!! Rules were few, with ‘no electronic devices allowed’ and ‘The Quiz Masters answers are Always Correct’, ‘Accept Where he is Clearly Wrong’, which happened when I had missed changing a topical question from last year. Everyone scored maximum points on that one.

Teams, once formed, selected a ‘Name’ and once they had seen the Question Subject Categories, selected a ‘Joker Round’, where they would get double points. There were eight rounds, with ten questions in each round. Question topics included, NZ Geography, Arts and Culture, NZ General Knowledge, Classic Cars, Vegetables, Sport, Television and Film, and General Knowledge.

After four rounds, teams had a break and the Quiz master put the ‘correct’ answers for each of the first four rounds up on the big screen and ‘discussion’ took place with the assembled audience.

There were a couple of ‘Points’ that became obvious to the Quiz Master from the first four rounds. The first being that most of the attendees had gone to ‘Sunday School’, as almost all teams got the answer correct to the question, “in the Bible, what is the first book of the ’Old Testament’? The answer ‘Genesis’. The second, was that all teams were ‘Crap’ at what I thought would be their strongest ‘Round’ – ‘Classic Cars’. The best score was 5/10.

Following the second set of four rounds, the ‘correct’ answers were again put up on the screen. All answered had been marked at the end of each round, and easily tallied at the end, so the results were quickly to hand.

The winners were “four Clowns”, (54/80) Graham Taylor, Lynne Yeaman, Bernice Hassed and John Wilson. Second place, “Under the Table”, (43.5/80) BryanAnderson, Liz Webster, Alf O’Sullivan, Rosemary Smith. Third place, “A Team”, (42/80) Noel Hassed, Mel Wilson, Steve Bell, Jacque Potter. Prizes consisted of Chocolate treats for each winning team member.

Following the Quiz, the Barbeque was started, and the meat was cooked, steak pieces and chicken kebabs. This was served on bread buns, with various salads and sauces. Once the first course was consumed, desert consisted of Carrot cake and Lamingtons, complete with plain yoghurt.

Comments on the afternoon were very positive, and the consensus was that we should do this again next year.

I can’t get to every event, and I enjoy it when others help with contributions, We urgently need some help on this. John Gray has been doing a sterling job but we are a club not a one-man-band. This is not only 'Breaking News', but it's the best news ever.

BREAKING NEWS – LET’S RALLY TOGETHER FOR A CAUSE THAT COUNTS!

_2025 Daffodil Day Rally – now with the support of Ford New Zealand!_

Dear Branch Members/Car Club Friends,

We’re delighted to share a major milestone for this year’s Daffodil Day Rally for Cancer – Ford New Zealand (FNZ) is officially partnering with the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand to support our National Day Rally efforts in 2025!

This is more than a sponsorship – it’s a shared passion for motoring, community, and giving back. FNZ will be engaging their nationwide dealer network to work hand-in-hand with VCC branches across the country, helping us drive awareness, attendance, and donations like never before.

What does this mean for your branch?

* Local Ford dealerships will be promoting Daffodil Day through their in-store screens, email newsletters, and social media

* FNZ is providing co-branded promotional materials (approved by VCC and the Cancer Society) to help you spread the word and attract participants

* Ford staff and customers will be encouraged to attend and support your local rally efforts

This collaboration will bring fresh faces, community buzz, and broader visibility to our beloved event – all in support of the incredible work done by the Cancer Society.

Why this matters

Daffodil Day is more than a date on the calendar. It’s our opportunity to shine a light on cancer

support services, celebrate the spirit of our club, and showcase the pride and history of classic motoring in New Zealand.

Whether you’re behind the wheel or behind the scenes, your involvement helps fuel hope – one car, one rally, one donation at a time.

What’s next?

I’ll be in touch again within the next two weeks with a full action plan, outlining how the VCC, Cancer Society, FNZ, and Federation of Motoring Clubs will all work together to make this the most eclectic, inspiring rally we’ve ever hosted.

So for now:

* Mark your calendars

* Dust off the bonnet

* And get ready to roll with purpose

This year, we rally with the wind at our backs – and a powerful new partner by our side.

Warm regards,

Central Otago Vintage Car Club (Including Queenstown & Wanaka)
