Chairman’s Report I am pleased to be able to say that the carpark extension is completed and looks great. The front fences have been painted and the Ariki Lodge and SVCC Southland signs are being renovated. Some tidying up outside remains to be done, and a working bee to clean the interior of the Clubrooms will ensure that everything is in top order for the South Island Easter Rally. The Veteran Rally was held on a day that threatened rain and thunder but this held off until all the vehicles and entrants were safely under cover, with the exception of barman Tony's motorbike. I don't know if he rode it home or not! Along with several Southland members we attended the Gore Festival Rally recently. An enjoyable run with the lunch stop at the Mandeville Airfield Fly In, along with traction engines and the first running of the restored Rogers steam locomotive. The run finished with the prize-giving and a meal at the Gore Clubrooms. [The bar ran dry] On a different note I see that a speed camera has begun operating in Otatara Road. I'm not suggesting for a moment that any members would be speeding to get to the Clubrooms, but take care.

Gerry

2018 South Island Easter Rally We are delighted to have in excess of 125 entries and thank you all for your support. If any of you have yet to provide us with the name and date of birth of your navigator, please do so as soon as possible. We are having a Navigators Award and hope to have a Senior and Junior category. In addition to the usual Inter-Branch Penzoil Team competition, we are having a Seniors versus Juniors competition with the four most senior drivers entered (from any branch) pitted against the four most junior drivers (again from any branch) in the field tests on the Sunday, hence the request for the driver’s dates of birth. The opportunity has also arisen to showcase vintage motoring as a family affair. Two Branches each have four family members entered so there will be an informal inter-branch family challenge also competed for over the Sunday Field Tests. Southland will be represented by the Jenkins Family motoring Veteran, Vintage, Post Vintage and Post 60 vehicles. The Parts Shed, Library and Pop-Up Vintage Clothing Shop will all be open from 9.00am on the Monday morning with morning tea provided. This is an ideal opportunity for you those of you who need period costume to be able to try and buy.

Wednesday Run 7th March A bitterly cold wind was blowing when 56 people and 26 cars met for the monthly run. We left the racecourse gates then turned down Herbert Street continuing on to Dee Street then out to Lorneville and on to Thornbury. From there it was through Rivertown and on towards Tuatapere. Turning down Longwood Road and on to the gravel we then drove through the bush at the Longwood Conservation Area which was very nice. Eventually we reached Fairfax so it was over the bridge and on to Drummond where we had lunch. Thanks Bob for another lovely run.

Bill Skeggs with his 1923 Willys Knight Roadster at the February Branch Meeting. This project started when Bill found the 4 cylinder sleeve valve motor while looking for parts for his Falcon Knight. From there he had to collect up enough parts to build up the car. Bill had carried out almost all the work on the car himself.

Classic Speedfest 2018- Vintage Racing Cars Firstly, a big thank you Ferg McDowell (VCC clerk of the course) and Tony Haycock (speed steward). These two gentlemen volunteer and go out of their way to make the weekend run smoothly. Also, on behalf of all the drivers in the VCC class I would like to extend my appreciation to all the organisers/volunteers from the Southland Sports Car Club for a fantastic weekend of motorsport. This year I retired the 1937 Austin 10 (Flying Wardrobe) and purchased the Mallock U2 Mk8. This has allowed me to be mid field and battle with other cars. Thank you to all the VCC members around the country that helped with the history of the Mallock. Without your knowledge I wouldn’t have been able to get the Mallock VCC documentation completed. To all VCC members, if you get the opportunity to race at Teretonga Classic Speedfest you will not be disappointed, the class has a full range of cars and driver abilities. As a newbie to racing I have found my follow competitors very welcoming and helpful. I look forward to seeing you all next year. The weekend started out very positively with thirteen entrants in the VCC class, the usual top drivers were on course. Many travelling from all over New Zealand as well as local drivers. Locals drivers; David Clearwater in his Furore II, Louise Clearwater Furore sports, Sam Smith Citroen Spyder and myself in the Mallock U2 Mk8. The nature of motorsport we had a few retirements over the weekend (including myself). Jim Bennett had issues during qualifying on Saturday morning and couldn’t continue (Furi Impulse). Roger Greaney in Saturday race had issues putting him out for the weekend (Formula Junior Tasman). Sunday had two more casualties; myself with broken rear axle (Mallock U2 Mk8) and Paul Coory with gearbox issues (Chev CAE Sprint Car). I got to be a spectator for the last race of the weekend, a fantastic threeway battle between Graeme Hamilton, Russ Haines and Paul Coghill. The race really heated up with Russ been very brave and going around the outside of Graeme on the sweeper at the end of the main straight. Russ held the lead until Graeme would came around Russ threequarters the way down the main straight each lap, but Russ continued to pass Graeme on the outside of the sweeper. Veteran Rally 2018 On a cloudy but warm day with the forecast for showers, thunder and hail, 16 veteran cars and bikes assembled in Esk Street at 9am for the annual Veteran Rally to Riverton. After briefing, the vehicles left Esk Street heading to Moores Road where the time section started. 15 miles later the time section ended and the entrants continued their journey to Riverton enjoying the countryside in their own time. Upon arriving we parked up at the RSA Clubrooms for lunch, field tests and a gossip. Many thanks to the RSA for providing their facilities to us. After the field tests entrants departed for the return journey back to the Clubrooms for prize giving. Overall the rally went well the only hiccups were Angus Petrie in his 1918 Ford, Graham Boyd on the 1911 Indian and then there were a couple of motorcyclists having to take evasion action as cattle grazing on the roadside behind strip wire got spooked by a couple of cars/bikes and escaped onto the road – a good test for their brakes maybe. It was great to see visitors attending even coming from as far as Australia – there were the Pearce Family consisting of Grandparents, Children, Grandchildren and In Laws, Brent McKenzie from Perth Australia, Paul Herron from Gore and Ross McCulloch from Wanaka. Many thanks must go to Bruce Marshall, Barry Keen & Stevie Randell for organizing the route, Trevor and Norma WIlkey for looking after the Time Section and Regan Lyons for providing back up, having these people helping make for a more enjoyable event.

Russell’s Ramblings 1937 SS100 Brough Superior Probably the best Brough of the six at the Motorcycle Mecca is the SS100. Juliana Baxter from the museum gave me the following details. First launched in 1924, it was based on the machine that Bert le Vack had ridden to take the world’s speed record at 119mph. Each bike was supplied to its new owner with a signed guarantee from Brough himself that it had been timed at over 100mph over a ¼ mile. This bike had a full restoration in 1990 by UK specialist J. W. Tennant-Eyles and sent to USA. It remained with one San Diego family until acquired for the NZ Classic Motorcycle collection via auction. With its chromed mudguards, nickel plated fuel tank and leather faced tool boxes, this SS100 is every inch a superior example of the marque that became known as “the Rolls Royce of motorcycles”. Juliana told me upstairs above the Mecca’s restaurant in Tay Street, an area nearly as big as the existing floor is being earthquake strengthened to show later & sports bikes etc. A small social area with light food and drinks will be incorporated. This is expected to be up and running in October or November. Morrie Coutts is in Clair House in Durham Street and is welcoming visitors. The Easter rally has 128 vehicles entered with nearly a dozen veterans. Last minute work is being done on the McKenzie Clement-Bayard with re -constructed wheels and new paint. Also, fine weather has been ordered.
