Ammons Comment My comments of a couple of months back, upon reading F.O.M.O.C’s stating electric vehicles over their life where more damaging than our current fossil fuelled vehicles. My reaction was how uninformed are these people in Governments Productivity Commission. Obviously I was wrong the commission report confirms that the manufacture of lithium batteries can generate much more CO2 than building and using fossil fuelled vehicles but as all the batteries are made overseas there is no reason for New Zealand to be concerned as the CO2 emissions created to power our electric vehicles will be added to the emission totals of other countries. I have only a limited education but though the idea was to reduce global emissions of CO2. To me this sounds like we can console ourselves other countries ruined the planet no us! Strategies suggested to rid the country of fossil fuelled vehicles by 2050 include “Freebate” a scheme where petrol and diesel owners subsidise people buying electric vehicles. Other efforts to stem the use of fossil fuelled vehicles include pushing up the price of fuel by increasing the carbon price, up to twelve times higher and basing vehicle registration costs on their potential emissions. Yes I was wrong the commission did have information to base their decisions on but I’m not convinced they made the right decisions Don Ammon
