Chairman’s Report Hi again, time for another report and hope everyone is into this summer weather. The Annual Rally is behind us for another year and this was a good day out enjoyed by all those attending. Thanks David & Marion, report further on. On Sunday 12th February, 18 cars turned up at Radius Millstream home to take 30 people out for a short drive around town. This was to go through the Domain but someone from the Domain forgot to unlock the gates. From there it was out to Braebrook, then to the new Industrial Estate with a look in Rural Transports yard, followed by a visit to Coniston Waters then back to the Home. We had a BBQ lunch put on by the Home and everyone enjoyed a great day out . I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to do this for the olds. Thanks, Trev B. On the 11 th February 4 cars from here went to Waimate for the Wallaby Run. We had a good look around and some awards came this way. Club night on 16th February was talking about getting younger members into the Branch and discussion about a bit of a name change. There was a lot of talking, so we will see what comes out of it all in the end. What a great turn out for the night with about 46 People attending. The Veteran Car Club had a good weekend on the 17th -19th February with a great turn out. It was nice to see these old cars out and about. They used the Club rooms etc. Club night for March is on 16th March at RXP Tinwald, see page 11. It is Swap Meet time again with Winchester being held on the 1st April, then Ashburton on 6th May, so be ready to help if asked. That’s about it from me for now. Trevor Begg.

New Member We extend a very warm welcome to you and hope we will see you at future events

Club Captain’s Report The Annual Rally was well attended by present day standards with 48 entries. It should however, be remembered that 30 years ago that number would have been considered a disaster as we usually received close to double that number at that time. If you have any suggestions about how we can turn those figures round please tell me about it. Anyway, those who entered did have an enjoyable day, with the weather being kind to us and the excursion up Mount Alford was well received by those who made it to the top. Valiant efforts on the ascent were made by John Rickard with Minty the Austin 7, and one other vehicle which began perspiring heavily, but both drivers decided discretion was the better part of valour and retired early. For those who completed the climb to the top the view was spectacular. The meeting to consider the options facing the club for the future was very well attended, with a better attendance than that of most of our AGMs. The committee has since been considering the various suggestions put forward at that meeting and has decided to begin by holding an open day, possibly at a venue on West Street, in April and inviting all motoring enthusiasts along to what will effectively be a “show and tell” afternoon. Further details later. We also have the Club Captain’s Night Trial on the 2nd April; this will cater for those who prefer a daylight run with perhaps some activities along the way, and an alternative night run with a more challenging format, following a BBQ at the grounds. Again, more information in the next “Blowout” David JIM’S TUCKER RUN WEDNESDAY 1ST MARCH 2017 The Tucker Run will be to The Stables If you would like to join us for lunch, then please make your way to The Stables by 12.15pm Please phone Jim on 307 6614 with numbers, as the restaurant requires these prior to the day. OBITUARY (Courtesy of The Guardian Motoring Team) Irwin Keith Hands - affectionately known as Ike - who passed away recently shared his interest in cars with us and our readers back in February 2006. In retirement Ike was looking for projects so encouraged by his friend and neighbour, the late Arthur Wolfreys, he decided to restore a car. A skilled person Ike found another talent and ultimately he restored four cars. When he spoke with us, Ike had just finished restoring a rather special Vauxhall. The car was significant because in earlier days his uncle the late Bill Broker, had owned a similar car in which Ike and his late wife Muriel made many journeys, including two special trips to Christchurch to get their engagement and wedding rings. The Vauxhall which Ike restored has since been sold to the grandson of the original owner. When family and friends gathered to celebrate Ike’s life, he was remembered as a devoted family man who always found time to do many things in our community, living by the mantra of asking others what he could do for them, rather than asking what they could do for him. The Guardian Motoring Team have always appreciated Ike’s ongoing interest in what we have been doing and we offer his daughter Lynley and his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Lynne and their families our condolences.

Grandparents They can take their teeth and gums out. Grandparents don't have to be smart. They have to answer questions like 'Why isn't God married?' and 'How come dogs chase cats?' When they read to us, they don't skip. They don't mind if we ask for the same story over again. Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you don't have television because they are the only grownups who like to spend time with us. They know we should have a snack time before bed time, and they say prayers with us and kiss us even when we've acted bad. 12

2017 ANNUAL RALLY

28 January 2017 After a cuppa and concours judging, President Trevor Begg welcomed participants from as far afield as Culverden and Waimate to the Ashburton Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand, 48th Annual Rally. As a mark of respect, a minute’s silence was held for Judy Barker who had recently passed away. David Oakley, Club Captain and Rally Convener gave a briefing and sent 48 vehicles off on either the short or touring route. We travelled through Ruapuna, Montalto, Mayfield and Mt Somers areas with the Mid Canterbury countryside looking its best. Pivot irrigators, various crops, silage bales, cows, sheep and deer added to the scenery before we arrived at Mt Somers Station for the field trials (the quiz questions caused a bit of head scratching), followed by lunch. After lunch David Acland (owner with Kate) spoke about the history of the area and the workings of the station which includes dairy, cattle, deer and sheep as well as the nearby Staveley Store. This store – café, general store and home of the Station Farm Shop is the newest Acland enterprise, marketing lamb, venison, veal, honey and small goods as well as olives and premium wine from their Marlborough vineyard. In appreciation of the visit, a gift basket was presented to David. The rally continued to Staveley where the Museum was open, then the road forked so to speak, with the majority of vehicles returning to Ashburton and a few hardy souls opting for the side trip to Dan Symons farm “Glenarn” at Alford Forest. After a tour of the homestead – some parts dating back to 1876, we motored on tracks around the farm and the 9 hectare QE2 covenant land that Dan has established. A real test of machine and driver began as we headed up Mt Alford on what could be described as a steep, rutty, single lane track. At about 850 metres we parked up on a flat area which afforded us a fantastic 180 degree view out over Mid Canterbury. Dan spoke again and pointed out landmarks and changes to the environment that have occurred in his life time. After a very slow descent everyone headed back to Ashburton and the Allenton Rugby Club for fellowship, prize giving and a meal. A great day was held by all, even if some vehicles had a “sweat up”. Overall winner was Mike Hillyer in his 1930 Model A. Thanks to David and his team for planning and running the rally, and to David Acland and Dan Symons for allowing access to their properties and for speaking to us. Noel Batty 15
