From The Editor’s Desk

Greetings members

Another month rolls by as your Editor clocks up another year on the planet. Not a great time for me of late as firstly I attended the funeral of a good friend of mine, Lofty Browne, an old rugby and drinking mate, who finally succumbed to his debilitating illness. A big strong guy who played rep rugby for Wanganui for many years. However I had nowhere his ability on the rugby field. He left me a parting shot though, or at least his mourners did, COVID. Never had it before, although Frances has. The vaccines I regularly take did not prevent a good dose! Apparently I passed it on to Craig and Wendy Ryland at a recent VCC meet, before I had noticeable symptoms. Sorry about that. Hope no one else has been infected. I felt like a sick dog on a chain for a few days, but over it now. How come us men always seem to get these infections far worse than the ladies do?

However on a brighter note, there are plenty of great things on the horizon for the branch over the next couple of months or so. Namely Restoration of the Year ( I’ve entered this on a handful of occasions but never hit the jackpot. Perhaps that I shouldn't keep on modifying some of my vehicles?) Speaking of which I hope to have my (modified) ‘37 Plymouth in attendance on the night as an Item of Interest. Might upset a few ‘traditional’ members, but it is not compulsory to even look at it. Could be rather amusing though. At least I will not enter it as a restoration, although arguably it is precisely that. I just like vehicles to be enhanced to enable them to drive like modern ones, without going ‘over the top’ like so many hot rods are. Still, different strokes for different folks. I appreciate most types of vehicles from veterans to moderns, hot rods to classics. Remember my foray into incorporating the word ‘Classic’ into our name? I still support this, but I must confess that I have grown rather tired of pushing the barrow any further than proudly proclaiming on the front cover of the Rivet ‘We welcome all Vintage and Classic Vehicles’ The Plymouth 300 build has taken longer than I thought as so many unforeseen ‘snags’ surfaced. Tim Patterson of Engine Rebuilders here in Wanganui, undertook the entire project and organised the necessary sub contractors. Thanks Tim for doing such a great job.

Other equally exciting branch events coming up include the Christmas parade, the Taihape Gumboot Rally ( I just love this event), the Club Picnic and of course the big one, Vintage weekend incorporating the Burma Rally. Plus other events as listed in the Calendar in this issue. I hope that we have a good attendance of members at the Taihape Gumboot. Robert Baines is a great guy, who year in and year out fronts this event. I believe that this coming Taihape Rally will be the 40th one that he has organised with assistance from members. Please do not forget that Taihape is very much part of our branch, so how about it people? Take a trip north to support YOUR branch and Robert and the crew. A really sociable event with Taihape hospitality in bucket loads! See you there. There is another New Years day event held every year by a neighbouring branch as you will be aware. I personally could not support this, with our own branch having our own event in Taihape. Quite different if it was on another day, but it is not. Of course everyone has to make up their own minds and equally I reserve the right to express my personal opinion in this column.

And thanks to Stephen and Sue Voss for organising the recent Night Trial. Winners as pictured on the front page of this edition were Wayne and Philip Gedye. Congratulations.

That’s all from me, yours in cruising, Editor Ian

Chairman's Report — November 2024

Greetings members

I want to thank all of our members that took part in the City’s Centenary celebrations. Although we turned up to join in, the newest component on our vehicle failed, and we had to return home after a push start. The starter solenoid (made in Mexico) has now been replaced by a genuine part.

For those who have a passion for draft constitutions, the rewritten one for the VCC is available. I have read it and discussed parts of it with your committee. In my opinion it is a very well written document and well worth supporting. The majority of the document is identical with the original but the changes reflect how now with changing technology and procedures we need to manage our club.

I have spent several hours recently assisting a friend attempting to get his Vintage car mobile. He had replaced two sets of spark plugs and nearly a whole can of ( start you B-----D) to no avail. I asked him if the fuel was fresh and he assured me it was. After a while I decided to check by draining some from the fuel tank. It was foul so we drained it all. Upon fitting a third set of plugs, new fuel and flushing the system the car burst into a smooth running machine. The foul fuel renders spark plugs useless so if you suspect your fuel has gone foul then replace it as topping up the tank does not work.

Finally I am sad to announce the passing of the last surviving founding member of our branch, Ian Drummond. The end of an era. Deepest condolences to his family.

Club Captain’s Report— November 2024

Greetings members

October has been another busy month for the Club, Mark Allingham from the WDC spoke to us at the October meeting. He didn’t talk on the subject I’d asked him to but was very entertaining and interesting. His talk could’ve been titled “A Blast From The Past”. I’m sure everyone who attended the meeting enjoyed his talk.

Bill and Heather James organized a lovely relaxing Sunday Run for us, the weather played it’s part in the afternoon which made the run all the more enjoyable. One of the highlights for me was the steam train sitting opposite Kai-iwi school belching smoke and steam looking like it was ready to get moving. Well done and thank you Bill and Heather.

Labour weekend was a busy weekend for our club. We joined eight other club members on the North Island Club Captains Camp out at Rangiwahia. Glyn and Cathy Clements organized the weekend. They’re looking at running a camp next year, it would be well worth considering attending. Another group of members went along to the Centennial Parade on the Saturday, thank you to everyone who made the effort to get their cars out and go along. Sietze and Pierre organized a group of cars for a display at the Springvale Stadium.

We have a Working Bee at the clubrooms on the 23rd of November, please come along, bring whatever gear you think may be appropriate for the work you feel like doing, Frank will be project manager on the day. We’ll have a morning tea fit for hardworking people, then after a bit more work we’ll head home by lunchtime.

The November Sunday Run has been changed to Sunday the 24th

Meet at the clubrooms around 1.00pm, cars away at 1.30pm. Please bring your afternoon tea and a drink, maybe a seat or blanket to sit on as well. I’m sure this will be an interesting afternoon for everyone.

December the 4th club night is Restoration of the Year. This is always a special night because we get to see what people have been doing and it marks the end of the year. Come along for an enjoyable evening.

Captain Rob

Savages’ Citroens

This month I have very much pleasure in introducing our hard working Rally Secretary, Christine Savage, to these pages. She really does perform an exemplary job in her Rally Secretary’s role . An accountant by profession, Christine is invaluable on committee with her well reasoned and accurate assessment of subject matters which surface. Husband Ray is also a hard working club member and former committee man. A dab hand with the paint brush, Ray’s handiwork is evident with the recent refurbishment of the clubrooms. Plus, of course, as the former proprietor of Savages Bakery, his expertise in preparing finger food for various club functions is first rate. I recently visited their property up the Longacre Road for a photo shoot and to view their impeccable Citroens. As a mainly Mopar fan, I can fully appreciate how motoring enthusiasts become besotted with one particular brand of vehicle. In Ray and Christine’s case this is with the French Citroen.‘Vive la France.’ They really are likeable and valued members of our branch. Here is their story narrated by Christine. Editor Ian.

Marrying into a Citroen Family

Ray’s Dad (Les) bought his first Citroen in 1957 from Max Mackay, the main Citroen man in NZ at the time. Les had twenty three different Citroens over 35 years until his death. His favorite being the 1955 6H. This was a prototype vehicle with only 76 right hand drives manufactured to test the hydraulic system that was to come out on the later Citroen's. This vehicle remains in the family with 54 years ownership to date.

The 6H has been used for a number of special occasions including both of Ray’s sisters weddings, our wedding car and when our niece married, I drove it for her wedding car.

Ray has had a series of Citroens (what a surprise) starting with a 1953 Light 15, moving onto a ’54 Big 15, a 1962 French assembled ID, a 1966 ID, and a 1971 DS 21 Semi-automatic. All purchased from Max.

When Ray and I met the 71 DS21 Semi was his vehicle, with a Morris 100 Van being his business delivery vehicle.

My first vehicle was a 1957 Austin A35, purchased from my Mum. This was changed to a 1975 Austin Mini 1000. Like all Minis it covered the ground reasonably fast. I sold the Mini and the ‘71 DS21 became my daily driver for a number of years.

For a few years there was a Mk5 Cortina Ghia and then Courier Extra Cab Flat deck. Finally we got back into the Citroen fold with the purchase of a 1991 BX Turbo Diesel Citroen. This vehicle had some get up and go. Our daughters knew when Mum changed down a gear when coming up to a passing lane that I was going make use of it!

I then had an Xantia, and when that was written off, I bought a 2002 C5 V6 Exclusive, the top of the range then. I still own the C5, a luxury car very good for travelling. I’m waiting for it to become VCC eligible. A V6 is not really required for my commute to work so my daily driver is now a 2015 Toyota Corolla.

A friend of Ray’s sister said she had a 2CV in storage and was going to sell it. Ray’s sister said her brother maybe interested, so $$$ changed hands. This sat in the shed for 14 years awaiting restoration until Ray said to me “restore or sell.” I had waited all that time I couldn’t let it go. The restoration was undertaken by Dave Taylor. Dave also has a number of Citroens in his ownership.

The 1989 2CV6 Dolly is now my ‘baby.’ it brings a smile to my face with both the paint job and the number plate “PARIS I” that I found on trade-me, and adds to the quirkiness of the car. Ray and I joined the VCC a number of years ago but rarely attended meetings or events as we are involved with the Citroen Car Club – Taranaki West Coast Branch for which we have both been presidents of at different times.

Savages’ Citroens

We started attending more VCC meetings, Bruce Ardell encouraged Ray to go on the committee. Then it was my turn, I got the call from Bruce, would I be the Rally Secretary? Not having a clue as to what this entailed I said yes. My 4th year as president for the TWCCCC was coming to an end and I would have more time. I still have never competed in a Rally.

Left: This is Christine’s ‘baby’ A 1989 Citroen 2CV. Love the Rego plate ‘PARIS 1’ and the French flag colours. Intrigued with the camber of the front wheels. A real ‘ladies’ car. So quirky. Brilliant.

Right: Car in the background is another Citroen, a 2002 C5 V6. Waiting to become VCC eligible.

Right: This beauty is a 1955 Citroen 6H. Beautiful car with lots of family history. Ray’s car-a real blokes car. Sorry Christine, but this would have to be my pick. Editor Ian

Thank you Ray and Christine for making your VCC story available for readers. I really did enjoy the connection and presenting this article. Editor Ian

King Country – Journey through Time.

The annual October rally had 5 vehicles from Wanganui - Austin A35, Vanguard 6 Estate, Packard Saloon, Mk1 Ford Zephyr convertible and a Model A.

Start was the parking area opposite the old Post Office in Marimarua Street, arriving by 9am for briefing at 9.30. The rally started by the Mayor (who a also a VCC member. Great day, sunshine, no rain and DUST. It could have been called the Spring Blossom Rally as all over the route there were great displays of natives and other trees in full bloom. At one point the entrance to a farmer’s property had two tall trees with clematis in full bloom covering both trees. I cannot recall ever seeing such a great display of clematis with large white flowers. In other places there were lovely displays of trees in bloom – large lilac droops like jacaranda’s plus many other native species and of course rhododendrons, often where there had been a house previously.

We started and drove down the main street westwards, turned off by the BP fuel station and into the country. By back routes to Ongarue, out onto the main road with a stop to look at the signage about a Railway disaster caused by a slip. We had questions to answer. All told there were 38 questions during the morning run, including 7 silent checks almost at the end. Up and down along windy roads often with grass growing in the centre – and signs saying no heavy trucks or large vehicles. No problem in the Vanguard. Out onto SH4, proceed towards Te Kuiti and then turn off to the left – again on back roads eventually ending up at Ohura. Left again and finally we arrived back in Taumarunui, only to pass again through town and under the railway bridge, but this time past the golf course to end up at a country school for an excellent lunch provided by the ladies from the school committee. By this stage we had covered 138km, or for me 88 miles, as I had to do a bit of extra navigating.

After Lunch it was turn right back to SH4 then left to Owhango. Just past the village turn right over the railway and into back roads again, finally coming out at the southern part of Taumarunui, crossing over the Victory Bridge into town. The afternoon run only had another 30 questions and we covered 70km. Afternoon tea was at the club rooms. The model railway group had a very large display - about 20 metres by 4 metres with a number of model trains in action. There were also other vintage vehicles and railway carriages. The Taumarunui Council steam roller and a large traction engine also on display.

A pleasant meal at the RSA in the evening . Lots of prizes awarded including Jim and Mary-Ann in the Zephyr. A great rally and an opportunity to see around the back country into areas that most of us had never been through. Twenty eight vehicles participated in the Rally.

Thank you Neil. Sounds like you enjoyed yourself. Editor Ian

Inter-Branch Campout-Ragiwahia

With terrible weather forecast for the weekend, it was pleasantly sunny on Saturday when five vehicles from Wanganui branch converged at the Cheltenham Pub for our 12-30pm meet up with the other intrepid explorers from Manawatu and Horowhenua branches.

Rob and Linda in the Chev truck, Colin and Tracey in the WW2 Dodge, Philip and Gillian in the ’48 Land Rover, Dave and Mihi in their Model A, and Tony and Alice in ‘Dads ‘39 Chev sedan’

After a casual lunch and ½ pint, eleven vehicles headed off up-country on an interesting back-road gravelly trek set out by our organiser and North Island Club Captain, Glyn Clements. Our place of destination – Base Camp Rangi - nestled in the foot hills of the ranges out the back of Rangiwahia. What a lovely, lovely place to stay! Modern, clean cabins with comfortable beds and a massive dining room with clean modern kitchen, as well as a huge ‘lounge’ to sit back and relax with a ‘GnT’ or cuppa, after a couple hours driving. Highly recommended for large groups to stay. Everything was BYO for the weekend, so Saturday dinner was for most a BBQ under the massive covered deck area, with ‘happy hour’ socializing and getting to know everyone.

Rain overnight but Sunday dawned fine for the Rob O’Keefe organised Gymkhana. Five different events were set up, which all had to be done twice. The one that had us all out of our comfort zone, was the Nerf gun shoot-out, where the navigator had to shoot plastic Nerf bullets into three containers about ten metres away. We all did terribly but it was great fun! You’ll be pleased to know that Wanganui branch smashed all others, with Colin and Tracey in 3rd place, Dave and Mihi in 2nd, and Philip and Gillian 1st place!!. So Mr Glyn Clements – you better bring your ‘A’ game if you want to mess with the Wanganui branch mate

After lunch we were led on a guided tour through the forest next door Apiti Forest. A private forest owned by ‘Hautapu Timber’ in Taihape. This was very interesting in that they are trying to grow fence posts – not huge timber. So, no pruning and no thinning with blocks harvested on a twelve year rotation. Some of the tracks were somewhat challenging in places, and I think our guide was a bit optimistic with were he thought pristine classic cars could go! Some cars having to turn around and back track, but we all meet up again and headed back to ‘home base’. A quick group photo shoot in the last of the sun before the heavens opened up with a torrential downpour for ten minutes, then drizzle settled in so we headed off for ‘happy hour and dinner’. Monday morning saw overcast skies and 7degree with a biting wind – real Rangiwahia weather! We all packed up and headed towards home our own separate ways. Good memories shared with good people. Thank you for submitting such a riveting article. Editor Ian

Whanganui Heritage Weekend

Park-up at Jubilee Stadium

The weather forecast for Labour weekend didn't look too promising, however it did improve overnight which enabled those resilient VCC souls to assemble at the Jubilee Stadium for the vehicle display as part of Heritage weekend.

In all we had a cross section of eighteen vehicles present ranging in year from 1914 to 1978, including a 1968 ex MOT Triumph Trophy ( TR6P) 650cc motorcycle.

Once more our display was warmly received by both the public and the busy stall operators in the stadium. For those members who wanted or needed to, they could indulge in some retail therapy, and by all accounts some worthwhile purchases were made.

We thank all the members who gave up their precious time to provide their vehicles for the display.

Thank you for your support. Pierre and Sietse.

Rob has covered the Victoria Ave parade in his report. I didn't get too involved and kept my distance in my Jeep. Masked up and like a sick dog on a chain thanks to covid Editor Ian

Dear Editor

Letters to the Editor

What the JP appointment means – Hinemoa RB

So what it means on the ground is that I act like a “helpful neighbour” with legal-related tasks, a volunteer who has been appointed by government because I’m understood to be a ‘trusted’ person. There’s no pay or special treatment afforded me, a JP role is a humble service to the community that I’ll carry for the rest of my life.

So I can help you with witnessing signatures, certifying copies of your documents, and help with affidavits. There are over 120 of us in Whanganui. If you need my help, I’m available in the afternoons during the working week down at H&A Print in Purnell Street.

And our VCC committee of 2 years ago wrote a reference to recommend me as a JP, so I want to say thank you so much for your support in helping make this happen – thank you!!
