Thanks also to Krystle Munro who has been our Club Room Convenor for the past year and we welcome Sandy McMillan to this position. Thanks to Lex Westoby for his time on the Swap Meet Committee. The Swap Meet is a most important part of our Branch. It is with pleasure we announce that Colin Johnstone was appointed as a Life Member at ourAGM. Colin has worked tirelessly for the Swap Meet for 39 of his 42 years being a member of our Branch. He also works quietly in the background for any rally requirements in the Geraldine area.Awell deserved nomination. Congratulations Colin. Avery successful All British Day was held over Kings Birthday weekend. Thanks to Gavin, Michelle and their helpers. Anew store room has been added to the front veranda of the clubrooms. This has been a well overdue requirement. Thanks to Eion Miller for making this happen Eion has also put shelving up in one of our upstairs rooms. The end of season run was a very good run, organised by Gloria and Tony McGillen.Awell thought out decent length run with us ending back at the Clubrooms for our lunch. Thanks to you both. Les Rzepecky has completed his first year as Newsletter Editor. He is doing a brilliant job, and it would make his life so much easier if people would give him information to include in the publication. If you join in a rally, just flick him an email and give him your thoughts. He won’t bite. Look forward to seeing you at one of the many rallies in the future, at a Noggin, or even on Wednesday mornings at the Parts shed.

Cheers and happy motoring, Alistair

Parts Department Report for June 2023

Firstly I must acknowledge the passing of our long serving member Don (Stick ) Campbell. (His) chair in the morning tea room is now looked at twice before anyone sits in it, half expecting the accusing finger to be pointed their way!

The stock of Bedford truck parts has now been successfully moved to the tractor shed to allow space for in the influx of Japanese parts.

The tender process has been finalised so the two Hillman Hunters will be on the move soon.

Our large stock of Air and Fuel filters which are stored in the Tractor shed have had some interest shown in them but if anyone has a contact that would be more than just interested that would be great!

We stock more than filters, like a huge selection of bearings of all sizes, oil seals, spark plugs and much, much more.

Come on down on a Wednesday morning between 9am and 12 noon and have a look at what we have in store, at 19 Redruth St Timaru.

PARTS DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT

I am pleased to present my first annual report for 2022/'23.

The parts coming were quite steady from various donors, then sorted and shelved by our willing Wednesday team. These donors are a very important part for the parts Dept. and the Club as they contribute to the smooth running of the Branch.

Visitors have been constant and usually leave happy with the item they wanted.

The yard has been kept full with donors cars which have been stripped of parts as required then the remains disposed of.

The cars at present are two Hillman Hunters which we are awaiting the results of a Tender process.

As soon as these cars go there are Two Austin Westminster’s to come in. (these are at present hiding in the long grass somewhere on Coonoor Rd.)

The two Swap Meets that were held netted the Parts Department the sum of $759.00 for the Orari meet and $778.00 for the Raceway meet.

My Grateful thanks to John Campbell and Jim Geddis for the towing of the Trailers to and from these events.

Thanks also to Eric Robins and Wayne Young for the gardens and lawn mowing respectively. (Wayne stepped up to take over the mower to Jim's Relief.)

Finances this year, starting with a balance of $4,416.09 and ending with $7,162.51 gave us a surplus of $2,746.42.

Finally, my thanks to John Campbell and Clive Merry to their assistance to me over my first year as Parts Manager.

Also thanks to the Wednesday Team for all their help.( they are a good Bunch )

This year I would like to nominate Andy Tallett for the Parts Award for his diligence and willingness around the Parts Dept.

It has been our privilege to have Donald Campbell, always known as Stick, involved with our Vintage Car Club. Stick has been a member for 49 years and was due to receive his 50 year presentation this time next year. He didn’t always see eye to eye with a lot of things that happened at the Club, and would certainly let everyone know, but sometimes was forthcoming with an alternative and sometimes not. He called a spade a spade and didn’t suffer fools lightly. If you fell out with Stick over anything at all, sometimes it took a long time to overcome the disagreement, but then you were best of buddies once again. One amusing incident that occurred was a wee while ago when there was discussion as to whether the Club should have a defibrillator to go on each rally. Then the discussion was should it go in the first car or the end car or just in a car that was in the middle of the group. Stick’s idea and suggestion was to take a B….. Shovel and dig a hole and leave the person there. Needless to say we don’t have a defibrillator on our rallies or in the clubrooms, as whose responsibility would it be anyway. Stick and Ruth have completed many car rallies with the South Canterbury Branch. Stick was actively involved in the mid-week runs and also the Safari Weekends. He was always a willing and obliging member and got things done around the clubrooms, and had served time on the committee. He had his OWN perch at the Parts Department of the Vintage Car Club and if anyone was sitting in his chair when he went in for his cuppa, all he had to do was point to his seat, then point to an empty chair and whoever was in his seat, meekly got up and shifted. No words were needed. Another interesting snippet he used to say was that when he died he wanted a trap door put in his coffin so that he could flick his ash out during the Service. No sure you got the trap door though Stick.

Barry Smith’s association began in the early seventies, camping at the Fairlie Domain where Stick soon became known as Camp Commandant!, as he would challenge anyone who came into camp. Like the time an armed offenders unit came into camp in the middle of the night! Stick was right up there in their faces, Who are you, who’s in charge here, what are you doing!! When told, “Go back to your tent”, he stood his ground and said, we have small children here in this camp and you lot come storming in waving guns around! It’s not on. That was Stick!

Then in the early eighties, Summer Safari’s began, instigated by the late Gordon Stevenson. Stick has not missed one in the 40 years since that I know of. It was an event that I looked forward to each year that I could attend. In all those years we never failed being the last around the fire in the early hours having that last drink. I have no idea what we talked about,

Donald
”Stick”
Campbell -

but we put the world to rights, and that’s the way it was. At Safari’s, his campsite was the Hub. Everyone would gather for morning coffee or afternoon tea and the social hour before the evening meal. Stick was usually the centre of attention, telling a story, discussing the problem of a member’s vehicle, explaining how it should be fixed and how it has taken the said person too long to get around to doing it. Then he would say in not complimentary terms, that person had done it all wrong!!

During a typical day at camp if you riled Stick up in some form or another, whatever you had in your hand, a cup, a hammer, a tent peg or tent pole, you would be threatened with leaving the said item sticking out of where the sun doesn't shine!!

Usually someone else makes a blunder with perhaps putting up a tent or just the way they parked their vehicle. Stick would appear and tell them how to correct it, Stick Style.

At one Safari during social hour around the fire, he had left to study something behind a tree, ( insert your own thoughts here) on returning he snagged his leg on a guy rope and sat down suddenly, right into a bucket full of water!! One of many that are close by the fire. We all thought it was funny but Stick did not!

Not only did we have Summer Safari’s, we also had Winter Safari’s as well. While at Dry Creek Station ( up Clayton Road, Fairlie) we had trouble with the coal range in the cookhouse. The fire would simply not draw. Smoke was coming out of everywhere except up the chimney. Stick tells us all to get out as “ He Knew” all about coal ranges. We are standing outside waiting for the smoke to come magically out of the chimney, but it’s only coming out of the windows, from under the eves and most of it coming out the door. Then this shape appears in the doorway with, can you believe it … a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. We were splitting our sides with laughter but Stick just glared at us and

End of Season Run – by Shannon Stevenson

Our End of Season run, held on an almost polar like May Sunday morning, attracted 29 participants vehicles.

Of these, a fair number were pre-1940, the oldest – with its top down – being Barry and Carla Barnes soon to 100 years old Peugeot. With Netcon up in the wires nearby, there were no piping hot teas and coffees – unless one bought a Thermos with them.

After 10:30am we hit the side-roads of South Canterbury, Alistair Day making sure the older cars hit the roads first – the more faster ones soon following. For myself this was a navigation spot for Ian Mann, with his rubber-bumper MGB.

With the route covering a fair amount of the Timaru District, it was a trip into the back of Fairview and into Hadlow, before criss-crossing Kerrytown and Pleasant Point.

After a compulsory 'boiling hot coffee' stop for many, it was across the Opihi and over to Waitohi to view the paddock and monument where Richard Pearce first flew 120 years back. Travelling up Earl Road, we soon encountered a few on machines of the two-wheeled variety on their way to Geraldine. Reaching Geraldine, we were soon across the Waihi River and down towards Orari and dairy milk central – Clandeboye.

Crossing the traffic-light controlled bridge, we were soon at the east of Temuka, and back across the Opihi, heading into Timaru, with detours through Seadown and the Timaru Port to reach our club rooms for lunch. With the clubrooms akin to a darkened cavern, due to the power still off, it was a picnic al-fresco for most of us. Thanks to all that made the run happen.

Ashburton VCC & South Canterbury VCC Rally to Oamaru,

The SCVCC met up with the Ashburton VCC at Pleasant Point on Saturday morning to travel to Oamaru, The Rally route was via back roads and included a lunch stop in Waimate, an afternoon stop in Kurow finishing in Oamaru at the Ascot Motels where most of the participants stayed overnight, with some staying privately. Afternoon Tea at Oamaru VCC Club Rooms with Saturday evening meal at The Galleon Restaurant or privately. Sunday morning was a visit to Tempero’s car building establishment. This was a most interesting and informative time.

2023 Timaru All British Day – by Shannon Stevenson

With a King's Birthday Sunday of 'typical British winter weather', 79 vehicles – mostly - originating from 'The old country' had their cobwebs blown off, all materialising at Caroline Bay's northern carpark. There were a fair variety present, the oldest Alan Patrick's 1924 Crossley, the smallest a gaggle of Minis, and the fastest mostly likely a 2004 Bentley Continental – its black paint almost mirror-like. There was an interloper, in the form of an immaculate Soviet built 1989 Lada Riva station wagon.

With Nola Day, Michelle Munro and helpers handing out rally packs leftright and centre, and the coffee-cart making a roaring trade, it was soon time for the briefing.

After the briefing it was time to hit the road – this author's 1980 Ford Escort was one of the last away due to filming most of the cars heading onto Virtue Avenue. The run, organised and plotted by the Munro's, took in a variety of scenic South Canterbury roads, one of the first being the Scenic Reserve, followed by Claremont Road and the (sealed) Taiko Zigzag.

With the Cave region in the distance, it was soon up over the Clelands Road Hill and down into Totara Valley and Hazelburn, before crossing into the Mackenzie District and reaching Raincliff. With a trip along Gudex Road, we soon reached the scenic Cattle Valley, turning right at the top of the Farm Barn hill to reach Lake Opuha, where we soon encounted an endless amount of pre 1931 machinery, in the Fairlie area for the Canterbury Branch's annual Irishman's Rally. With Fairlie soon encountered, it was a trip up SH8 for a 'British invasion' into the small hamlet of Kimbell, our vehicles soon filling almost all available spaces of the grassed spaces adjacent to the Silverstream Hotel. While a fair number of us braved the elements and had outdoor picnics, a fair few ventured inside to the warmth of the hotel, warm roast meals, coffees and – cold – beers going down a treat, before heading outside for the raffle ticket draw.

Thanks to the Munro's, and supporters for organising a great All British Day.

Notes from the Library July 2023

There has been a small influx of items since my last report and I would like to thank Shannon for the donation of several books including some that used to belong to his late uncle Ian Hoskin. while others at one time were part of the Aoraki Polytech Library and subsequently withdrawn. These items include The Mini, Jaguar XJ6 Restoration Guide, Pictorial History of the Automobile, FordV8 and Mercury 1932 to 1948

Thanks too to Bruce Robertson who has donated “The Encyclopedia of Classic Cars” covering from 1890 to 2007, and Gaye Goodman who has donated 2 scrapbooks compiled by her late husband Brian a former Chairman of this Branch.

An unknown donor has left a parcel of Ford books, mostly Model A plus one entitled Ford in the Thirties which actively compared the various models with other makes in the market at the same time. From time to time books just seem to arrive and it is helpful if a note is left with them to show from whence they came so they can be recorded as such and the donor recognised.

While in Wellington recently, I again visited the Wellington Branch Clubrooms and had a quick look around their Library which is very well set up. I noted they use a similar simple book system to record out loan items as we do.

I shall be heading overseas for 2 months from 21 July, so have requested that someone from the Committee open the Library on Club Nights in August and September or on request on a Wednesday morning. If you take out something or return it please record that in the book You will have noted that I am still doing these notes so if you were not at the AGM can deduce that the anticipated competition for the Librarian’s job came to naught!

I was pleased that on the night of the AGM several members took advantage of the opportunity to inspect the Library/Resource Room for the first time or at least for some time. Please feel free to take a look on any Club night.

Don’t forget our duplicate magazines table, please help yourself, and there are also lots of good titles, manuals etc. available cheap within the Library.

MID WEEK RUN June 15th .By hillholder.

This run was to be held the previous week on the 8th. But was cancelled due to the Passing of one of our long time member's Don (Stick) Campbell

11 cars left the clubrooms and headed out West of Timaru on Fairview Rd. Barton, then back down Claremont turning into Gleniti Rd. Travelling West again until turning into Brockley Rd, looping back towards Roswill via Fraser Rd.

From Rosewill hall corner we made our way to the Pleasant Point Highway by Rolling Ridges, Doake and Levels Valley Rds. and back onto Rolling Ridges Rd.

Onto the Highway then right into Cartwright Rd. continuing towards Timaru up Kellands hill along Pages Rd. left into Gleniti Rd.

Turning right back down Claremont Rd. and turning into the Scenic Reserve and arriving at the parking area by the lake.

We enjoyed our cuppa out in the sun ( while it still had some warmth) No problems by any of our group and from this writer it was great to be back in the seat of the '59.

P.S. I'm sure 'Stick' would have enjoyed the run!

MID WEEK RUN – THURSDAY 13TH

Meet at the clubrooms for a 1.30 p.m. start, bring your afternoon tea and a chair.
